The article presents 80 relevés of bryophyte communities on living trees and dead wood sampled within Holosiivskyi National Nature Park (Kyiv, Ukraine). They are referred to 16 associations of 5 classes (Frullanio dilatatae-Leucodontetea sciuroidis, Cladonio digitatae-Lepidozietea reptantis, Neckeretea complanatae, Hylocomietea splendentis, Platyhypnidio-Fontinalietea antipyreticae). Most frequent are communities dominated by Hypnum cupressiforme and H. pallescens of the class Frullanio dilatatae-Leucodontetea sciuroidis (on bark of living trees) and Brachythecium rutabulum of the class Cladonio digitatae-Lepidozietea reptantis (on dead wood). In mesic forests, trees are usually not inhabited by bryophyte communities. Much more often, they occur in wet forests, near water, and in mesic forests in ravines. Four associations are reported in Ukraine for the first time: Callicladietum haldaniani LeBlanc 1963, Brachythecio rutabuli-Plagiomnietum cuspidati (Felföldy 1941) Plamada 1982, Brachythecio rivularis-Hygrohypnetum luridi Philippi 1965, and Leptodictyo riparii-Hygroamblystegietum varii Hugonnot et Celle 2013.

Es descriu la composició de l'estrat muscinal dels alzinars, de les rouredes i de les pinedes de diverses localitats del Baix Solsonès. S'han observat els següents ambients: el sotabosc, les roques, les aigües corrents, les clarianes i la vegetació epífita. A més incluim la llista de les espècies recol·lectades. Bryophytes vegetation (saxicolous, terricolours, epiphyte and aquatic communities) from several location in Baix Solsonès (NE of Spain) are described. A catalogue of species is included.

The dispersal ecology of tropical non-vascular epiphytes has rarely been experimentally investigated. We studied epiphyte colonisation on 1 × 1 m polyethene nets placed for four years at seven sites at different elevations in montane forests in the Taita Hills, Kenya. During the first year the nets were also used to measure fog deposition. We predicted that differences in growth conditions would affect colonisation and subsequent growth of non-vascular epiphytes and result in clear differences in epiphyte cover and biomass, and community composition among sites. After four years the nets were taken down for determination of epiphyte cover and biomass. The diversity of established liverworts and macrolichens was also examined. Many liverwort and macrolichen species established diverse communities on the nets placed in the moist upper-montane zone. This was in contrast with the situation in the drier lower-montane zone where only green algae and crustose lichens were able to colonise most nets. Light intensity was an important determinant of epiphyte community composition, with liverworts dominating on nets under closed forest canopies and lichens dominating at more open sites. Atmospheric moisture was also important, with lichens benefiting from abundant fog deposition at open and windy sites. The dry weight of epiphytes (per unit area) on lichen-dominated nets was greater than on liverwort-dominated nets, while the highest cover was generally observed on liverwort-dominated nets. Our results demonstrate that polyethylene nets can be effectively used to study colonisation of non-vascular epiphytes as well as the abiotic and biotic factors controlling epiphyte colonisation and community composition in tropical forests. The liverworts Acanthocoleus chrysophyllus and Diplasiolejeunea kraussiana were new additions to the Kenyan bryophyte flora.

Questions: Despite the increasing scientific interest in distance decay of compositional similarity in ecology, the scale-dependence of geographical vs environmental control on distance decay of biological communities has not been properly addressed so far. The present work highlights the relative importance of niche-based processes vs dispersal limitations on distance decay patterns of epilithic bryophyte assemblages at different spatial scales. Location: Serra de Sintra, central Portugal. Methods: We adopted a nested sampling design with 32 selected sampling sites in each of which two clusters, each with five rocks, were surveyed. Each cluster was characterized by a set of 15 macro-scale variables, which were divided into environmental and anthropogenic. For each rock eight micro-scale variables were recorded. Partial Mantel tests were used to assess the relative importance of geographical and environmental distance on community dissimilarity for each grain size (site, cluster, rock). Quantile regressions were used to describe the decay patterns of community similarity with respect to geographical and environmental distances. Ordination analyses and variation partitioning techniques were applied to assess the pure and shared effects of measured variables on bryophyte community composition. Results: Environmental distance based upon macro-scale predictors was significantly correlated to community similarity, while no significant correlation was found for ecological distance calculated for micro-scale predictors, except at the largest grain size. The decrease of community similarity with geographical and environmental distance was thus consistently strengthened with increasing sample grain. Compositional variation was best explained by anthropogenic variables. Conclusions: The relative importance of environmental vs geographical distance on compositional similarity in epilithic bryophyte communities varies with the spatial scale of the predictors and with the sample grain. The decrease of similarity with increasing distance is related to changes in habitat features, especially those driven by human disturbance, while is weakly affected by variations in substrate features.

Охарактеризовано стан та перспективи вивчення антоцеротових та печіночних мохів Лісостепу України. У хронологічному порядку проаналізовано літературні джерела, які містять відомості про ці групи бріофітів, переглянуто гербарні матеріали низки гербаріїв України та опрацьовано оригінальні дані.Відділ Аntocerotophyta налічує чотири види, які належать до одного порядку, однієї родини, двох родів. Відділ Мarchantiophyta представлений 49 видами з 27 родів, 21 родини, 6 порядків, 2 класів.Виявлена роль печіночників у формуванні бріоугруповань, наведено результати класифікації бріоценозів за еколого-флористичною класифікацією. У результаті оригінальних досліджень встановлено, що в складі обстежених бріоценозів Лісостепу України є 11 видів печіночників, які належать до 10 родів, 9 родин, 6 порядків, двох класів. Мархантіофіти наявні в усіх субстратних типах бріоугруповань: епігейних, епіфітних, епіксильних, епілітних.Ценотична роль печіночників у формуванні бріоугруповань Лісостепу України неоднозначна. Вони є складовими компонентами 29 асоціацій, однієї субасоціації та 15 безрангових угруповань, 16 союзів, 12 порядків, 8 класів мохової рослинності Лісостепу України, де виступають діагностичними видами синтаксонів чи їх малозначимими компонентами.Таким чином, флора антоцеротових та печіночників у лісостеповій зоні України є досить бідною. Досліджуються вони не окремо, а разом із мохами. Перспективними напрямками у їхньому вивченні є: дослідження на території природно-заповідних об’єктів; вивчення гепатікофлори урбоекосистем; встановлення ролі антоцеротових мохів та печіночників у формуванні бріоценозів, описи відповідних синтаксонів та складання синтаксономічних схем мохової рослинності за їхньою участю., The state and prospects of study of hornworts and liverworts of Forest-Steppe of Ukraine are characterized. The literature sources, that contain information on these groups of bryophytes, chronologically analyzed, the herbarium materials of a number of Ukraine’s herbarium viewed and the original data processed.Antocerotophyta has four species that belong to one order, one family, two genera.Marchantiophyta represented by 49 species from 27 genera, 21 families, 6 orders, 2 classes.It was established the role of liverworts in the formation of bryophyte communities, the results of bryocoenoses’ classification by eco-floristic classification. As a result of original research it was found that in the surveyed bryocoenoses of Forest-Steppe of Ukraine there are 11 species of liverworts belonging to 10 genera, 9 families, 6 orders, two classes. Liverworts are available in all substrate types of bryophyte communities: epigeous, epiphytic, epixylous, epilithic.The coenotic role of hornworts and liverworts in forming of bryocoenoses in Forest-Steppe of Ukraine is ambiguous. They are integral components of the 29 associations, one subassociation and 15 without rank communities, 16 unions, 12 orders, 8 classes of mossy vegetation of Forest-Steppe of Ukraine, which are the diagnostic species of syntaxa or their insignificant components.Thus, the hornwort and liverwort flora in a forest-steppe zone of Ukraine is poor enough. They investigated not individually, but together with the mosses. Perspective directions in their study are: research within natural protected objects; studying the hepatic flora of urban ecosystems; clarification of the role of hornworts and liverworts in forming of bryocoenoses, description and compilation of relevant syntaxa syntaxonomical schemes of mossy vegetation with their participation.

In the 1850s when the timber floating began in Sweden many streams were channelized, which meant that the streams were straightened out, side channels were closed, and stones, trees and boulders were moved out to the banks of the streams. These measures altered the morphology of the streams, causing impediments to water moving in from the stream to the riparian zone, and reduced flooding frequency. When the era of timber floating was over humans began to restore the channelized streams to restore the damaged systems, mainly to improve fish habitats. Channelization and restoration involve major disruptions to the stream ecosystem, and the purpose of this study was to investigate how the bryophyte communities in the riparian zone differed in diversity, species richness and areal coverage, depending on the form of disturbance they were exposed to and the time passed since the disturbance occurred. This study was conducted along tributaries to the Vindel River in northern Sweden. There were three types of tributaries: partly channelized streams, best-practice restored streams and demonstration restored streams. At all tributaries included in the study, bryophyte samples were collected at two heights from the water surface, 0 and 40 cm. These samples were then identified to family or species level and their areal coverage was estimated. The results show that the demonstration restored streams had the lowest species richness and, there were no significant differences in diversity and species richness between the channelized streams and the best-practice restored streams. Regarding areal coverage, there was no significant difference between the stream types. The results also show that the time plays an important role for recovery of the bryophyte communities since diversity and species richness increased with the time since the disturbance occurred. Under 1850-talet då flottning av timmer påbörjades i Sverige startade kanaliseringen av många vattendrag, vilket innebar att vattendragen rätades ut, sidokanaler stängdes, och stenar, träd och stenblock flyttades ut till vattendragens kanter. Dessa åtgärder förändrade vattendragens morfologi, orsakade fördämningar mellan vatten och strandzon och minskade översvämningsfrekvensen. När timmerflottningens era var slut började människan restaurera de kanaliserade vattendragen, främst för att det visat sig att fisket försämrats. Kanalisering och restaurering innebär stora störningar för ekosystemet de utförs i och denna studie syftar till att titta hur mossamhällen i strandzonen skiljer sig åt i diversitet, artrikedom och täckning beroende på vilken form av störning de utsatts för och tiden sedan de utsattes för störningen. Studien är gjord längs biflöden till Vindelälven i norra Sverige. Biflödena är dels kanaliserade vattendrag, bästa-praxis restaurerade vattendrag och demonstrationsåtgärdade vattendrag. Vid samtliga sträckor som ingår i studien har mossprover samlats in på två höjder från vattenytan, 0 och 40 centimeter. Dessa prover har sedan identifierats till lägsta möjliga taxonomiska nivå (art eller familj), och deras täckningsgrad har uppskattats. Resultaten visade att de demonstrationsåtgärdade vattendragen hade lägst artrikedom och diversitet och mellan kanaliserade vattendrag och bästa-praxis vattendrag kunde ingen signifikant skillnad i diversitet eller artrikedom påvisas. Gällande täckningsgraden fanns ingen signifikant skillnad mellan vattendragstyperna. Resultatet visade också att tiden spelar en viktig roll för återhämtningen hos mossamhällena då artrikedom och diversitet ökar med tiden sedan inträffad störning.

Vegetation classification consistent with the Braun-Blanquet approach is widely used in Europe for applied vegetation science, conservation planning and land management. During the long history of syntaxonomy, many concepts and names of vegetation units have been proposed, but there has been no single classification system integrating these units. Here we (1) present a comprehensive, hierarchical, syntaxonomic system of alliances, orders and classes of Braun-Blanquet syntaxonomy for vascular plant, bryophyte and lichen, and algal communities of Europe; (2) briefly characterize in ecological and geographic terms accepted syntaxonomic concepts; (3) link available synonyms to these accepted concepts; and (4) provide a list of diagnostic species for all classes. Location: European mainland, Greenland, Arctic archipelagos (including Iceland, Svalbard, Novaya Zemlya), Canary Islands, Madeira, Azores, Caucasus, Cyprus. Methods: We evaluated approximately 10 000 bibliographic sources to create a comprehensive list of previously proposed syntaxonomic units. These units were evaluated by experts for their floristic and ecological distinctness, clarity of geographic distribution and compliance with the nomenclature code. Accepted units were compiled into three systems of classes, orders and alliances (EuroVegChecklist, EVC) for communities dominated by vascular plants (EVC1), bryophytes and lichens (EVC2) and algae (EVC3). Results: EVC1 includes 109 classes, 300 orders and 1108 alliances; EVC2 includes 27 classes, 53 orders and 137 alliances, and EVC3 includes 13 classes, 24 orders and 53 alliances. In total 13 448 taxa were assigned as indicator species to classes of EVC1, 2087 to classes of EVC2 and 368 to classes of EVC3. Accepted syntaxonomic concepts are summarized in a series of appendices, and detailed information on each is accessible through the software tool EuroVegBrowser. Conclusions: This paper features the first comprehensive and critical account of European syntaxa and synthesizes more than 100 yr of classification effort by European phytosociologists. It aims to document and stabilize the concepts and nomenclature of syntaxa for practical uses, such as calibration of habitat classification used by the European Union, standardization of terminology for environmental assessment, management and conservation of nature areas, landscape planning and education.
