The morphology-dependent antibacterial activity of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles with three different morphologies, nanowall (NW), nanosphere (NS), and, nanorod (NR) was rigorously investigated to elucidate the influence of shape and size on their performance. Their morphological, surface, and structural characteristics were meticulously analyzed using SEM, BET, and XRD techniques. The antibacterial activity of synthesized ZnO samples was initially investigated and validated through in silico docking studies against nine bacterial strains, specifically targeting 1GCI, 2DCJ, 6KMM and 3T07, 6KVQ, 1MWT from gram-positive Bacillus sp. and Staphylococcus sp. respectively, 6N38, 6CRT, 6GRH from gram-negative E. coli. The docking simulations were performed using Autodock 4.2 software, yielding promising results characterized by negative binding energies, indicative of favorable interactions. The invitro studies were assessed against three same bacteria mentioned above using the disk diffusion method. The results demonstrated a pronounced dependency of antibacterial activity on the surface area, average crystallite size, and surface roughness of ZnO samples. ZnO (NW) exhibited markedly superior antibacterial properties. This enhanced efficacy is attributed to their higher surface area to volume ratio, smaller average crystallite size and increased surface roughness facilitating more efficient interactions with bacterial cell membranes. To address rising global food demand, the development of sustainable technologies to increase productivity is urgently needed. This study revealed that foliar application of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs; 30 to 80 nm, 0.67 mg/d per plant, 6 d) to rice leaves under heatwave (HW) stress increased the grain yield and nutritional quality. Compared with the HW control, the HWs+ZnO group presented increases in the grain yield, grain protein content, and amino acid content of 22.1%, 11.8%, and 77.5%, respectively. Nanoscale ZnO aggregated on the leaf surface and interacted with leaf surface molecules. Compared with that at ambient temperature, HW treatment increased the dissolution of ZnO NPs on the leaf surface by 25.9% and facilitated their translocation to mesophyll cells. The Zn in the leaves existed as both ionic Zn and particulate ZnO. Compared with the HW control, foliar application of ZnO NPs under HW conditions increased leaf nutrient levels (Zn, Mn, Cu, Fe, and Mg) by 15.8 to 416.9%, the chlorophyll content by 22.2 to 24.8%, Rubisco enzyme activity by 21.2%, and antioxidant activity by 26.7 to 31.2%. Transcriptomic analyses revealed that ZnO NPs reversed HW-induced transcriptomic dysregulation, thereby enhancing leaf photosynthesis by 74.4%. Additionally, ZnO NPs increased the diversity, stability, and enrichment of beneficial microbial taxa and protected the phyllosphere microbial community from HW damage. In this research, we fabricated a functional conductive nanocomposite with valuable properties through a chitin (CH) and cellulose (CE) polymerization process, incorporating ZnO/(0.1, 0.2, 0.3 mol.%) CuO bioactive nanoparticles. These bioactive nanoparticles, synthesized through sol-gel and polymerization interactions, greatly enhanced the structural, dielectric, and antimicrobial characteristics of CH-CE@ZnO/CuO conductive nanocomposites. The morphological analysis revealed that these nanoparticles, with diameters ranging from 11-25 nm, formed covalent bonds with the membrane matrix, bolstering the conductive nanocomposites ' structural integrity and dielectric performance. The dielectric properties of the conductive nanocomposites were significantly enhanced by the even distribution of ZnO/CuO nanoparticles within the CH-CE composite. The alarming global rise in antibiotic resistance, driven by the widespread overuse of traditional antibiotics, has created an urgent demand for new antimicrobial solutions. This study presents zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods as a potential nano-antibiotic agent. ZnO nanorods, with a 2:3 aspect ratio, were synthesized using an efficient one-step hydrothermal method at a low temperature of 100°C, reducing the synthesis time to just 5 hours. The synthesized ZnO nanorods' morphology, structure, and composition were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The potent antimicrobial activity of these nanorods against common bacterial strains such as Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus was examined through optical density at 600 nm (OD600) measurements and inhibition zone analysis, demonstrating substantial inhibition of bacterial growth. In particular, at a concentration of 5 mg/mL, ZnO nanorods achieved a 96% reduction of B. subtilis bacteria in OD600 and an impressive 99.87% reduction in culturing assays within one day, showcasing bactericidal efficiency on par with tetracycline at 0.003 mg/mL. Furthermore, a predictive model of bacterial growth was developed and validated, providing insights into the time-dependent bactericidal efficiency of the synthesized nanorods. Synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles-polymer nanocomposites is an emerging strategy in nanotechnology to improve targeted delivery and reduce the toxicity of nanoparticles. In this study, we report biological effects of previously described hybrid nanocomposites containing dextran-graft-polyacrylamide/zinc oxide nanoparticles (D-PAA/ZnO NPs) prepared from zinc sulfate (D-PAA/ZnONPs(SO 4 2- )) and zinc acetate (D-PAA/ZnONPs(-OAc)) focusing primarily on their antimicrobial activity. D-PAA/ZnONPs(SO 4 2- ) and D-PAA/ZnONPs(-OAc) nanosystems were tested in a complex way to assess their antioxidant activity (DPPH assay), antidiabetic potential (α-amylase inhibition), DNA cleavage activity, antimicrobial, and antibiofilm activity. In addition, the toxicity of D-PAA/ZnONPs(SO 4 2- ) and D-PAA/ZnONPs(-OAc) nanosystems against primary murine splenocytes was tested using MTT assay. The studied nanosystems inhibited E.coli growth. For all the investigated strains, minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of D-PAA/ZnONPs(SO 4 2- ) and D-PAA/ZnONPs(-OAc) were in the range of 8 mg/L-128 mg/L and 16 mg/L-128 mg/L, respectively. The nanocomposites demonstrated effective antibiofilm properties as 94.27% and 86.43%. The compounds showed good antioxidant, anti-α-amylase, and DNA cleavage activities. D-PAA/ZnONPs(SO 4 2- ) and D-PAA/ZnONPs(-OAc) nanosystems reduced cell viability and promoted cell death of primary murine spleen cells at concentrations higher than those that proved to be antibacterial indicating the presence of therapeutic window. D-PAA/ZnONPs(SO 4 2- ) and D-PAA/ZnONPs(-OAc) nanosystems show antioxidant, antidiabetic, DNA cleavage, antimicrobial, and antibiofilm activity against the background of good biocompatibility suggesting the presence of therapeutic potential, which should be further investigated in vivo., (© 2024. Objective: This study looked at how different concentrations of curcumin (Curc), zinc chloride (ZnCl 2 ), zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) and Curc loaded on ZnO-NPs (Curc-co-ZnO-NPs) in cryopreservation dilution affected the quality of ram sperm after thawing., Methods: ZnO-NPs were synthesised using Berberis vulgaris leaf aqueous extract. Then, Curc was loaded on the ZnO-NPs that had been synthesised. We used analytical methods to look at the composition, morphology and size of green synthesised ZnO-NPs and Curc-co-ZnO-NPs, including UV-Vis, zeta potential, EDX, DLS, FE-SEM and FT-IR. Using a Tris-base extender containing various concentrations of Curc, ZnCl 2 , ZnO-NPs and Curc-co-ZnO-NPs (0, 1, 10 and 100 µg/mL), semen samples from four rams were combined. Sperm motility, viability, DNA and plasma membrane integrity, total abnormalities and malondialdehyde (MDA) generation were all evaluated in treatment groups after thawing., Results: The results showed that adding 1 µg/mL of ZnO-NPs and Curc-co-ZnO-NPs significantly reduced the level of MDA and total abnormalities (p < 0.05). Additionally, following the freeze-thawing procedure, the presence of 1 µg/mL of Curc-co-ZnO-NPs in the diluent of ram sperm significantly increased the percentage of sperm viability and motility in comparison to the control and other treatment groups (p < 0.05). Oral diseases are often associated with bacterial and fungal pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, Enterococcus faecalis, and Candida albicans. This research explored a novel approach to addressing these pathogens by synthesizing zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) coated with rutin (RT), a plant-derived compound. The synthesized ZnO-RT NPs were comprehensively characterized using UV-Vis spectrophotometer, SEM, and EDAX techniques to confirm their structural composition. The antioxidant potential was assessed through free radical scavenging assays. Additionally, the antimicrobial activity of ZnO-RT NPs was evaluated using a zone of inhibition assay against oral pathogens. Molecular docking studies with the Autodock tool were performed to elucidate the interactions between RT and the receptors of oral pathogens. The findings demonstrated that ZnO-RT NPs exhibited robust free radical scavenging activity. Furthermore, they showed significant antimicrobial activity with a minimal inhibitory concentration of 40 μg/mL against oral pathogens. ZnO-RT NPs also displayed dose-dependent anticancer effects on human oral cancer cells at concentrations of 10, 20, 40, and 80 μg/mL. Mechanistic insights into the anticancer activity on KB cells revealed the upregulation of apoptotic genes. This study underscores the promising potential of ZnO-RT NPs for dental applications due to their strong antioxidant, anticancer, and antimicrobial properties. Today, many infections in plants are related to biofilm-developing bacteria. These infections can result in severe agricultural losses. Thus, this study aims to investigate the synergistic antibiofilm activity of Thymus vulgaris extract on the inherent antibacterial properties of ZnO nanoparticles against Erwinia amylovora and Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae. Additionally, to gain insight into the molecular mechanisms of phytocompounds' antibacterial activity, the molecular interactions of T. vulgaris phytochemicals with the TolC protein and TonB-dependent siderophore receptor were investigated through in-silico studies. Green-synthesized ZnO NPs (ZnO@GS) and chemically synthesized ZnO (ZnO@CHS) were evaluated using XRD and SEM techniques, showing a crystalline structure for both powders with average sizes of 50, and 40 nm, respectively. According to FT-IR and EDS spectroscopy, ZnO@GS was covered with thyme extract. Based on the in vitro results, all samples of ZnO NPs exhibited considerable antibacterial activity against both bacteria. At the same time, thyme aqueous extract alone proved considerably less effective at all tested concentrations. Compared to ZnO@CHS and thyme extract, the antibacterial efficacy of ZnO@GS against E. amylovora (MIC = 512 μg/mL) and P. syringae pv. syringae (MIC = 256 μg/mL) was significantly improved upon surface covering with thyme phytocompounds. Moreover, their antibiofilm properties were enhanced by almost 20 % compared to ZnO@CHS. In addition, molecular docking investigations showed that most of the phytocompounds could form stable interactions with the TonB-dependent siderophore receptor (P. syringae) plug domain and the TolC (E. amylovora) external channel. Nanotechnology has various applications in all branches of science, including engineering, medicine, pharmacy, and other related fields. Conventional techniques, such as the chemical reduction approach, which produces nanoparticles (NPs) using various hazardous chemicals, offer several health risks due to their toxicity and raise serious environmental concerns. In contrast, other techniques are expensive and need a lot of energy. More than 70 % of pathogenic bacterial strains have developed resistance to at least one class of antibiotics, leading to an increase in life-threatening bacterial infections that pose a significant health risk. However, the creation of NPs by biogenic synthesis is risk-free for the environment and clean enough for biological use. This study was aimed at synthesis of novel Moringa oleifera mediated starch capped silver-zinc NPs and green synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles from Aloe vera, papaya, and Lactobacillus plantarum. Antimicrobial activity of both NPs was tested against Gram-negative antibiotic-resistant bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538), and two foodborne pathogens Listeria monocytogenes and Campylobacter jejuni. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, and Scanning Electron Microscopy were used for characterization. Majority of the research studies stress the flexibility, repeatability, and desirable features of the metals, polymers, and plant components employed in the production of biomedical nanoparticles. Such an intuitive approach provides several advantages, particularly a reasonable total expense, compliance with healthcare and pharmaceutical implementations, and the ability to produce massive volumes for industrial use. The novelty of the presented work lies in the unusual combination of silver, starch, and zinc oxide nanoparticles using Moringa oleifera, which is an eco-friendly alternative to chemical-based methods. ZnO nanoparticles and Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) tend to agglomerate when used individually, and high Ag + concentrations can cause cytotoxicity. To address these issues, we synthesized carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based antimicrobial mimetic peptides (AMPMs) by introducing amphiphilic cations on the surface of CMC using a chemical grafting method. Bis-formaldehyde-formylated AMPMs were prepared through the directional oxidation of AMPMs with periodate and used as the reducing agent to synthesize AgNPs on the surface of pectin in situ for the preparation of a pectin/AgNPs/ZnO composite film. The physical and chemical properties of the films were characterized and analyzed by SEM (EDS), TEM, XRD, and UV spectroscopy. The results showed that the film's surface was smooth and flat, with small, well-stabilized AgNPs and uniformly dispersed ZnO. The film retained the original crystalline form of pectin, but exhibited altered crystallinity, indicating that the method employed was very mild. A systematic evaluation of the film's antimicrobial performance using the dynamic growth curve, inhibition zone, and colony counting methods showed that AgNPs and ZnO imparted excellent, long-lasting antimicrobial activity to the film (98 %). Additionally, the films exhibited good flexibility, excellent ultraviolet protection (99.9 %), biocompatibility, and biodegradability. Notably, the film was sensitive to humidity, as demonstrated by its humidity-responsive bionic application. An edible composite film was developed and applied for ready-to-eat sea cucumber storage to improve the product quality. The PAC film base is first prepared by mixing 0.5 % glycerin (GL) with 4 % polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and 1 % arginine-modified chitosan (Arg-CTS) in the same volume. After the addition of nano-ZnO (ZnO) and thymol (Thy) to the PAC film base, the mechanical properties and functions were tested. Compared to the PAC film, the PAC-ZnO-ThyH composite film showed a 1.34-fold increase in the DPPH scavenging rate and a 2.19-fold increase in the ABTS scavenging rate. Contrary to the PAC film, the inhibition zone diameter of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus significantly increased by 2.35 and 4.08 folds in the PAC-Zno-ThyH film, respectively. After applying the PAC-ZnO-ThyH film to store ready-to-eat sea cucumber for 10 days, there was a significant reduction in weight loss, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), and lipid oxidation levels to 1.47 and 1.26 folds to the Ctrl group. After preservation, the hardness and chewiness of ready-to-eat sea cucumber were maintained at 1079.62 ± 138.86 N and 913.73 ± 175.79 N, respectively. Allium mongolicum Regel is prone to rapid senescence and quality deterioration during postharvest storage. Herein, polyvinyl alcohol/pullulan/ZnO nanoparticles (PVA/PUL/ZnO-Nps) composite films were prepared via solution casting and studied to analyze the effects of ZnO-Nps on the PVA/PUL film matrix. Results revealed that the incorporation of suitable ZnO-Nps effectively reduced the light transmittance, improved water contact angle, water vapor permeability, and mechanical properties of the composite films, as well as enhanced their antimicrobial activity. The composite films were used for the postharvest preservation of A. mongolicum Regel. Results revealed that the PVA/PUL/ZnO-Nps film effectively reduced malondialdehyde accumulation content, superoxide radical generation rate, hydrogen peroxide content, improve the activity of related enzymes, and extend the storage time compared with that of polyethylene films. Wound infection resulting in delayed wound healing and wound deterioration remains a clinical challenge. Recently, multifunctional hydrogel dressing was a promising strategy which has attracted wide attention in preventing wound infection and promoting wound healing. In this study, a hybrid hydrogel made of gelatin (GL), tannic acid (TA), oxidized sodium alginate (OSA), and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) was prepared mainly by double network cross-linking approach, named tannic acid-gelatin/oxidized sodium alginate/zinc oxide (TA-GL/OSA/ZnO). The composite hydrogels exhibited improved mechanical properties, which provided by TA modified the structure of GL network, Schiff base reaction between GL and OSA, and the strengthening effect of ZnO NPs. Meanwhile, the composite hydrogel showed high antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) (97.8 % ± 0.9 %) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) (96.6 % ± 1.2 %), attributed to the synergistic effect of TA and ZnO NPs. Electrospun nanofibrous membranes, with their unique structural features, can potentially enhance wound healing through controlled delivery of active agents. Here, an innovative porous nanofibrous membrane was developed as a dressing patch with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory functionalities for cutaneous wound healing. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and Salvia abrotanoides essential oil (SAEO) were incorporated into sodium alginate, which served as the shell. Poly(ε-caprolactone) was used as the core of coaxial electrospun wound dressing nanofibers (PCL/SA@ZnO/SAEO). With the addition of ZnO NPs and SAEO, the average diameter of nanofibers was 187 ± 51 nm, with improved tensile strength (4.7 ± 0.4 MPa), elongation at break (32.9 ± 2.1), and elastic modulus (21.4 ± 2.0). Concurrent application of ZnO NPs and SAEO increased antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli and promoted the proliferation, attachment, and viability (>90 %) of L929 cells. The PCL/SA@ZnO/SAEO scaffold accelerated the healing time with total wound healing over 14 days in mouse models carrying full-thickness wounds compared to the nanofibrous scaffold without additives. Histopathological examinations demonstrated better tissue regeneration, i.e., enhanced collagen deposition, improved re-epithelialization, and neovascularization, and increased quantity of hair follicles. Moreover, the chicken chorioallantoic membrane assay confirmed the synergistic angiogenic effects of SAEO and ZnO NPs. Industrial and academic chemical pollutants such as Eriochrome Black-T (EBT) and murexide dyes are widely used in academic institution as well as industries, when eluted into rivers, delineate the ill effect on human and aquatic life. Herein, green and ecofriendly synthesis of silver doped-Zinc oxide nanoparticles (Ag/ZnO NPs) and chitosan coated Ag/ZnO nanoparticles (CS/Ag/ZnO NPs) using Bergera koenigii extract to solve environmental issues have been reported for the first time. Spherical and agglomerated particles with crystalline flakes like morphology of Ag/ZnO NPs and CS/Ag/ZnO NPs respectively have been ascertained by Scanning electron morphology (SEM) analyses and XRD. XRD analysis revealed the average crystallite size of 42.16 nm and 48.45 nm for Ag/ZnO NPs with 5 % and 10 % Ag concentration respectively, lesser than crystallite size of 47.394 nm and 52.38 nm for CS-5 % Ag/ZnO NC and CS-10 % Ag/ZnO NC respectively. All the synthesized NPs and NC demonstrated remarkable antibacterial potential against both gram +ve and gram -ve bacteria. Additionally, all the materials showed very high time-dependent photocatalytic degradation activity (>98 %) of EBT and murexide in 12 min. Remarkably, all active nano-catalysts exhibit high durability, and displayed recyclability for >8 cycles. Biodegradable polymer microspheres in bone tissue engineering have become appealing as their non-invasive advantages in irregular damage bone repair. However, current microspheres used in BTE still lack sufficient osteogenic capacity to induce effective bone regeneration. In this study, we developed osteogenic composite microspheres concurrently loaded with magnesium oxide (MgO) and zinc oxide (ZnO), both of which are osteogenic active substances, using a facile and scalable emulsification method. The osteogenic composite microspheres exhibited a sequential yet complementary release profile characterized by a rapid release of Mg 2+ and a gradual release of Zn 2+ in a physiological environment, thereby maintaining the concentration of bioactive ions at a sustained high level. As a result, the combination of Mg 2+ and Zn 2+ in the composite microspheres led to a synergistic enhancement in biomimetic mineralization and the upregulation in the expression of osteogenic-related genes and proteins at the cellular level. Through a critical-sized calvarial rate defect model, the osteogenic composite microspheres were demonstrated to have strong osteogenic ability to promote new bone formation via ultrasonic imaging, histological and immunohistochemical evaluations. The adsorption of Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) using nanoparticles is gaining significant attention due to the rapid removal or treatment rates. In this study, Silicon Dioxide-Zinc Oxide nanoparticles (SiO 2 -ZnO NPs) were synthesized to adsorb pyrene. Physicochemical characterization of SiO 2 -ZnO NPs showed plasmon resonance at 323 nm, agglomeration, irregular dispersion, and diameters of 90-100 nm. FT-IR analysis identified major functional groups on SiO 2 -ZnO NPs, including alkyne, amine, and isothiocyanate. SiO 2 -ZnO NPs demonstrated significant pyrene adsorption at pH 5, with 10 μg/mL of SiO 2 -ZnO NPs and 2 μg/mL of PAHs, performing better under UV irradiation. Two isotherm models, adsorption isotherm and kinetics adsorption, were used to analyze the PAHs adsorption by SiO 2 -ZnO NPs. Additionally, SiO 2 -ZnO NPs were tested for antibacterial and antibiofilm activities against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. At a concentration of 150 μg/mL, SiO 2 -ZnO NPs produced inhibition zones of 21.57 mm, 20.30 mm, 19.30 mm, and 11.30 mm against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Klebsiella pneumoniae, respectively. They also inhibited and disrupted biofilms of Micrococcus luteus and Acinetobacter baumannii. Furthermore, SiO 2 -ZnO NPs exhibited photocatalytic degradation of lead, achieving 68.24% degradation within 5 h of treatment. The current study was conducted to investigate the effect of Melia azedarach seed-mediated ZnO nanoparticles on growth performance, protein utilisation efficiency, haematology and nutritional status in pigs. A total of 48 pigs were allocated to the following six treatments replicated 8 times: Negative Control (NC, No antibiotic), Treatment 2: Positive control (PC) given a conventional antibiotic (Oxytetracycline, 40 mg/kg feed); Treatment 3: Nano-ZnO 300 mg/L (N300ZnO), Treatment 4: Group given 150 mg/L Melia azedarach seed mediated nano-ZnO (N150MA), Treatment 5: Group given 300 mg/L Melia azedarach seed mediated nano-ZnO (N300MA), Treatment 6: Group given 450 mg/L Melia azedarach seed mediated nano-ZnO (N450MA). The experiment was conducted over 7 weeks. Melia azedarach seed-mediated ZnO nanoparticles had no significant effect on growth performance apart from average daily feed intake (ADFI) with treatment 3 having the highest value. It significantly affected protein consumption and growth efficiency but not protein efficiency ratio and specific growth rate. Nanosized zinc oxide (nZnO) metal particles are used in skin creams and sunscreens to enhance their texture and optical properties as UV filters. Despite their common use, little is known about the molecular mechanisms of nZnO exposure on damaged skin. We studied the effects of topically applied nZnO particles on allergic skin inflammation in an oxazolone (OXA)-induced contact hypersensitivity (CHS) mouse model. We investigated whether exposure to nZnO during the sensitization or challenge phase would induce immunological changes and modulate transcriptional responses. We followed skin thickness, cellular infiltration, and changes in the local transcriptome up to 28 days after the challenge. The responses peaked at 24 h and were fully resolved by 28 days. Co-exposure to nZnO and hapten did not interfere with the formation of the sensitization process. Conversely, during the hapten challenge, the application of nZnO fully suppressed the development of the CHS response by the inhibition of pro-inflammatory pathways, secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and proliferation of immune cells. In differentiated and stimulated THP-1 cells and the CHS mouse model, we found that nZnO particles and Zn ions contributed to anti-inflammatory responses. The immunosuppressive properties of nZnO in inflamed skin are mediated by impaired IL-1R-, CXCR2-, and LTB4-mediated pathways. nZnO-induced dermal immunosuppression may be beneficial for individuals with contact allergies who use nZnO-containing cosmetic products. Our findings also provide a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of nZnO, which could be considered when developing nanoparticle-containing skin products.

Micro/nanorobots (MNRs) hold great promise for various applications due to their capability to execute complex tasks in hard-to-reach micro/nano cavities. However, the developed magnetic MNRs, as marionettes of external magnetic fields, lack built-in intelligence for self-targeting, while chemotactic MNRs suffer from limited self-targeting range. Here, we demonstrate magnetic-chemotactic ZnO/Fe-Ag Janus microrobots (JMRs) capable of rapid, remote self-targeting for bacterial elimination. The JMRs utilize the magnetic Fe engine for coarse navigation from a distance, allowing for external control to swiftly guide them to the vicinity of a hidden/uncharted target that establishes a local chemical gradient ([CO 2 ] or [H + ] gradient). Once in proximity, the inherent chemotaxis of the JMRs takes over, the chemotactic engine enables them to autonomously accumulate at the target site along the chemical gradient in high precision. Upon reaching the target, the ZnO/Fe-Ag JMRs can release Zn 2+ and Ag + to eliminate bacteria residing there. The proposed strategy of integrating on-board chemotaxis with external magnetic field-driven propulsion paves the way for efficient precise therapies using MNRs, especially in targeted drug/energy delivery involving remote hidden or uncharted targets.

Background: An excessive amount of reactive oxygen species triggers oxidative stress, leading to an imbalance in cellular homeostasis. Antioxidant therapy is an effective tool for lowering the oxidative stress and associated ailments. Recently, green nano-based drug formulations have demonstrated promising antioxidant activity and neutralizing oxidative stress. In this study, a tannin molecule Hamamelitannin (HAM), was utilized to synthesize zinc oxide nanoparticles HAM-ZnO NPs, to mitigate oxidative stress and associated ailments ., Methodology: The HAM-ZnO NPs were synthesized and characterized by XRD, SEM, and FTIR. The antioxidant potentials of HAM-ZnO NPs were analyzed by in vitro antioxidant assays. Zebrafish embryos and larvae were used as in-vivo models to assess the toxicity and antioxidant protective mechanism. Hydrogen peroxide (1mM) was employed to induce oxidative stress and treated with HAM-ZnO NPs to study the cognitive impairment and antioxidant enzyme levels. Levels of reactive oxygen species and cell death due to oxidative stress induction were studied by 2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate and Acridine orange staining methods. Additionally, expression of Antioxidant genes such as SOD, CAT, GPx, and GSR were studied. ., Results: HAM-ZnO NPs exhibited a spherical morphology and size ranges between 48 and 53 nm. In vitro antioxidant studies revealed the antioxidant properties of HAM-ZnO NPs. Furthermore, in vivo studies indicated that HAM-ZnO NPs don't possess any cytotoxic effects in zebrafish larvae at concentrations between (5-25 µg/ml), The study also observed that HAM-ZnO NPs significantly reduced Hydrogen Peroxide-induced stress and increased antioxidant activity in zebrafish larvae. Also, the antioxidant gene expression was upregulated in the HAM-ZnO NPs zebrafish larvae., Conclusion: Findings in this study showed that HAM-ZnO NPs might be a potential intervention for diseases linked to oxidative stress., (© 2024. The threat of antibiotic resistance is escalating, diminishing the effectiveness of numerous antibiotics due to the rapid development of resistant bacteria. In response, the use of green-synthesized nanoparticle, alone or combined with antimicrobial agents, appears promising. This study explores the effectiveness of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) synthesized using Loranthus cordifolius leaf extracts and subsequently coated with anethole. The fabrication of these nanoparticles was confirmed via UV-Vis, FTIR and TEM analyses, ensuring the nanoparticles were produced as intended. Utilizing a nanoprecipitation process that excludes evaporation and drying, a high drug loading capacity of 16.59% was accomplished. The encapsulation efficiency for anethole was recorded at 88.23 ± 4.98%. Antibacterial efficacy was assessed by com paring the green-synthesized ZnONPs (average size: 14.47 nm), anethole-loaded ZnONPs (average size: 14,75 nm), and commercially sourced ZnONPs. The ZnONPs with anethole demonstrated superior inhibition against all tested bacterial strains, including Gram-negative species like Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli, and Gram-positive species like Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus, outperforming the commercially available ZnONPs. Additionally, anethole-coated ZnONPs showed the greatest inhibition of Gyr-B activity (IC50 = 0.78 ± 0.2 M), better than both green-synthesized and commercially available ZnONPs. Microbial combating is one of the hot research topics, and finding an alternative strategy is considerably required nowadays. Here, we report on a developed combined chemo- and photodynamic delivery system with a core of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), porphyrin photosensitizer (POR) connected to alginate polymer (ALG), and berberine (alkaloid natural agent, BER) with favorable antimicrobial effects. According to the achieved main designs, the results demonstrated that the loading capacity and entrapment efficiency reached 22.2 wt % and 95.2%, respectively, for ZnO@ALG-POR/BER nanoformulation (second design) compared to 5.88 wt % and 45.1% for ZnOBER@ALG-POR design (first design). Importantly, when the intended nanoformulations were combined with laser irradiation for 10 min, they showed effective antifungal and antibacterial action against Candida albicans , Escherichia coli , and Staphylococcus aureus . Comparing these treatments to ZnO NPs and free BER, a complete (100%) suppression of bacterial and fungal growth was observed by ZnO@ALG-POR/BER nanoformulation treated E. coli , and by ZnOBER treated C. albicans . Also, after laser treatments, most data showed that E. coli was more sensitive to treatments using nanoformulations than S. aureus . The nanoformulations like ZnOBER@ALG-POR were highly comparable to traditional antibiotics against C. albicans and E. coli before laser application. The results of the cytotoxicity assessment demonstrated that the nanoformulations exhibited moderate biocompatibility on normal human immortalized retinal epithelial (RPE1) cells. Notably, the most biocompatible nanoformulation was ZnOBER@ALG-POR, which possessed ∼9% inhibition of RPE1 cells compared to others. High binding affinities were found between all three microbial strains' receptor proteins and ligands in the molecular docking interaction between the receptor proteins and the ligand molecules (mostly BER and POR). In conclusion, our findings point to the possible use of hybrid nanoplatform delivery systems that combine natural agents and photodynamic therapy into a single therapeutic agent, effectively combating microbial infections. Therapeutic efficiency correlates with nanoformulation design and microorganisms, demonstrating possible optimization for further development.

Duckweeds (Spirodela polyrrhiza) are free-floating macrophytes that grow profusely in nutrient-rich waters. Under ideal conditions, they exhibit a rapid growth rate and can absorb a substantial amount of nutrients, macromolecules, and pollutants from bodies of water. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) synthesized from plant extracts, particularly under stress conditions, have opened new research avenues in the field of nanotechnology. Under salinity stress, the accumulation of flavonoids in duckweeds can affect the structure of ZnO NPs, helping researchers ascertain their antimicrobial role. In our study, we exposed mid-log phase duckweed monocultures to 75 mM NaCl in a full-strength Murashige and Skoog medium for 7 days, followed by a 15-day recovery period. We observed significant overexpression of superoxide and hydrogen peroxide as reactive oxygen species. As a result, chlorophyll and certain metabolites were produced in lesser amounts, while flavonoid and phenol content increased by 12% and 8%, respectively. This overproduction persisted up to 10 days into the recovery treatment period but dropped by 8% and 5%, respectively, by the 15th day. The flavonoid coating transformed the NPs into rosette clusters, which exhibited reduced antimicrobial activity against Aeromonas hydrophila, a Gram-negative, fish-pathogenic bacterium. Herein, we discuss potential mechanisms for the conformational transformation of ZnO NPs into finer dimensions in response to NaCl-induced oxidative stress in duckweed. In this study, the azo dye degradation capacity of salinity-treated plants increased as the flavonoid profile became enriched. Cotton seeds have poorer germination than other crops because of their high sensitivity towards insect pests and other biotic and abiotic stresses during the germination process. In the present study, inorganic bulk and nano nutrients of zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium oxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles were synthesized using the chemical reduction method and invigourated with cotton seeds. The characterization of nanoparticles was done by FESEM, HRTEM, UV/Vis analysis and FTIR. The delinted and fuzzy seeds of two American cotton varieties (H 1300 and H 1098-i) were nano-primed for 10 h with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) @ 400 ppm and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 NPs) @ 100 ppm. After nanoparticle invigouration, the seeds were analyzed for various parameters at different intervals (0 months, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months and 12 months) such as germination percentage, seedling length, seedling dry weight, electrical conductivity, dehydrogenase activity, antioxidant enzyme activity. The results indicated that that different storage periods and nanopriming treatments had significant effects on all seed quality parameters except the effect of nanopriming treatments on germination percentage (excluding delinted seeds of H 1098-i). It is also revealed that the interaction effect of nanopriming treatment and storage period was non-significant on all parameters except EC. Maximum reduction in seed quality parameters was observed in control treatment and minimum was found when seeds were nanoprimed with ZnONPs @ 400 ppm. The differences in the response for both NPs can be attributed to their surface charge, and concentration used. Overall, ZnONPs and TiO 2 NPs could hold seed quality and vigour during the storage of cotton seeds of American varieties (H 1300 and H 1098-i)., (© 2024. The Author(s).)

This study was designed to assess the role of nano-zinc oxide in mitigating the deleterious effects of heat stress in African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) by evaluating parameters such as aggressive behavior (biting frequency and chasing duration), hematological indicators, and stress-related biochemical markers. A total of 96 catfish were divided into four distinct groups (24 fish/group): The first group (CON) served as the control group, receiving a diet free of nano-zinc oxide. The second group (HS) was exposed to heat stress at 35 °C ± 1 °C. The third group (ZN) was fed a diet containing nano-zinc oxide at 30 mg/kg of the diet, and the fourth group (ZHN) was exposed to heat stress (35 °C ± 1 °C) and fed a diet containing nano-zinc oxide at 30 mg/kg of the diet. The results clarified that the aggressive behavior and cortisol levels were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the HS group compared to the CON and ZHN groups. Additionally, the level of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was significantly lower (P < 0.05) in the HS group compared to the CON and ZHN groups. Meanwhile, a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in red blood cells, hemoglobin, packed cell volume, white blood cells, alkaline phosphatase, and lymphocytes, was observed in fish belonging to the HS group, while the levels of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, neutrophils, and monocytes showed a significant increase (P < 0.05). Supplementation with nano-zinc oxide significantly recovered most hematological and biochemical parameters. In conclusion, nano-zinc oxide contributed significantly to the regulation of the negative impacts of heat stress on fish by reducing aggressive behavior and cortisol levels. Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii denotes a significant menace to public health, and it mandates an urgent development of new effective medications. Here, we aimed to estimate the efficiency of the zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NP) biosynthesized from Arthrospira maxima (Spirulina) both in vitro and in vivo. Carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii isolates were collected, identified, tested for their antibiotic susceptibility, and then subjected to PCR to detect carbapenemase-producing genes. The most predominant carbapenemase resistance gene was bla KPC . The biosynthesized ZnO NP were characterized using UV, FTIR, XRD, SEM, and TEM. The prepared ZnO NP was then tested against A. baumannii isolates to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), which ranged from 250 to 1000 μg/ml. Burn wound was persuaded in twenty rats and inoculated with carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii isolate. Rats were allocated into four groups: a negative control group, a positive control group treated with topical 0.9% saline, a test treatment group that received topical ZnO NP, and a standard treatment group. All groups received treatment for 15 consecutive days and then euthanized. Skin samples were harvested and then subjected to histopathological and immunochemical investigations. ZnO NP revealed a comparable antibacterial activity to colistin as it revealed a lower level of fibrosis, mature surface epithelization with keratinization, and restoration of the normal skin architecture. In addition, it significantly decreased the immunoreactivity of the studied inflammatory markers. Thus, ZnO NP synthesized by A. maxima could be considered a promising, safe, and biocompatible alternative to traditional antibiotics in the therapy of carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii infections., (© 2024. Nanoparticles impose multidimensional effects on living cells that significantly vary among different studies. Machine learning (ML) methods are recommended to elucidate more consistence and predictable relations among the affected parameters. In this study, nine ML algorithms [Support-Vector Regression (SVR), Linear, Bagging, Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD), Gaussian Process, Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC), Partial Least Squares (PLS), Kernel Ridge, and Random Forest] were applied to evaluate their efficiency in predicting the effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs: 0.5, 1, 5, 25, and 125 µM) and microparticles (ZnO MPs: 1, 5, 25, and 125 µM) on Carum copticum. The plant root/shoot biomass; number of leaves, branches, umbellates, and flowers; protein content; reducing sugars; phenolic compounds; chlorophylls (a, b, Total); carotenoids; anthocyanins; H 2 O 2 ; proline; malondialdehyde (MDA); tissue zinc content; superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity; and media ΔpH were measured and considered input variables. All levels of ZnO MPs treatments increased growth parameters compared to the control (ZnSO 4 ). The highest shoot/root fresh and dry mass were recorded at 5 µM ZnO MPs compared with the control. The root fresh/dry mass under ZnO NPs treatments was more sensitive than shoot parameters. The number of flowers increased by 134 and 79% in MPs and NPs treatments compared to the control, respectively. ZnO NPs reduced protein content by up to 81% in 125 µM NPs compared to ZnSO 4 . Reducing sugar content increased to 25, 40 and 36% in 5, 25, 125 µM MPs and 67, 68, 26, 26 and 21% in 0.5, 1, 5, 25 and 125 µM NPs treatments, respectively. The pH alteration was more significant under NPs and affected zinc uptake. All levels of ZnO NPs treatments increased growth parameters compared to the control. All ML algorithms showed varied efficiencies in predicting the nonlinear relationships among parameters, with higher efficiency in predicting the behavior of root and shoot dry mass, root fresh weight and number of flowers according to R 2 index. Background: Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B streptococcus, GBS) induces a serious infection that can harm not only aquatic life but also humans and other animals. In a fish farm in southern Egypt, Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) has developed an epidemic with clinical symptoms resembling piscine streptococcosis., Results: Initial microscopic inspection of the affected fish brain and kidney indicated the presence of Gram-positive cocci. S. agalactiae was effectively isolated and identified using nucleotide homology of the 16S rRNA and species-specific PCR. The partial 16S rRNA sequence was deposited in the GenBank database at the NCBI and given the accession number MW599202. Genotyping using RAPD analysis indicated that the isolates in the present study belonged to the same genotypes and had the same origin. The challenge test, via immersion (9.2 × 10 7 , 9.2 × 10 6 , and 9.2 × 10 5 CFU/ml for 1 h) or intraperitoneal injection (4.6 × 10 7 , 4.6 × 10 6 , and 4.6 × 10 5 CFU/fish), elicited clinical symptoms resembling those of naturally infected fish with a mortality rate as high as 80%. The ability to create a biofilm as one of the pathogen virulence factors was verified. Zinc oxide nanoparticles and the ethanolic leaf extracts of nine medicinal plants demonstrated considerable antibacterial activities against the tested S. agalactiae strain with low minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) and minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC). The ethanolic leaf extracts from Lantana camara and Aberia caffra showed potent antibacterial activity with MBC values of 0.24 and 0.485 mg/ml, and MIC values of 0.12 & 0.24 mg/ml, respectively., Conclusion: This study isolated S. agalactiae from O. niloticus mortalities in a fish farm in Assiut, Egypt. The pathogen persists in fish environments and can escape through biofilm formation, suggesting it cannot be easily eliminated. Background: The world society is still suffering greatly from waterborne infections, with developing countries bearing most of the morbidity and death burden, especially concerning young children. Moreover, microbial resistance is one of the most prevalent global problems that extends the need for self-medication and the healing period, or it may be linked to treatment failure that results in further hospitalization, higher healthcare expenses, and higher mortality rates. Thus, innovative synthesis of new antimicrobial materials is required to preserve the environment and enhance human health., Results: The present study highlighted a simple and cost-effective approach to biosynthesize a chitosan/graphene oxide/zinc oxide nanocomposite (CS/GO/ZnO) alone and immobilized in a macroporous cryogel as a new antimicrobial agent. Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633 was used as a safe and efficient bio-nano-factory during biosynthesis. The formation of CS/GO/ZnO was confirmed and characterized using different analyses including ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), selective area diffraction pattern (SADP), Zeta analyses, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). GO combined with ZnO NPs successfully and displayed an adsorption peak at 358 nm. The XRD results showed the crystalline composition of the loaded ZnO NPs on GO sheets. FTIR spectrum confirmed the presence of proteins during the synthesis which act as stabilizing and capping agents. The nanocomposite has a high negative surface charge (-32.8 ± 5.7 mV) which increases its stability. SEM and TEM showing the size of biosynthesized ZnO-NPs was in the range of 40-50 nm. The CS/GO/ZnO alone or immobilized in cryogel revealed good antimicrobial activities against B. cereus ATCC 14,579, Escherichia coli ATCC 25,922, and Candida albicans ATCC 10,231 in a dose-dependent manner. The CS/GO/ZnO cryogel revealed higher antimicrobial activity than GO/ZnO nanocomposite and standard antibiotics (amoxicillin and miconazole) with inhibition zones averages of 24.33 ± 0.12, 15.67 ± 0.03, and 17.5 ± 0.49 mm, respectively. The MIC values of the prepared nanocomposite against B. cereus, E. coli, and C. albicans were 80, 80, and 90 µg/ml compared to standard drugs (90, 120 and 150 µg/ml, respectively). According to the TEM ultrastructure studies of nanocomposite-treated microbes, treated cells had severe deformities and morphological alterations compared to the untreated cells including cell wall distortion, the separation between the cell wall and plasma membrane, vacuoles formation moreover complete cell lyses were also noted. In the cytotoxicity test of CS/GO/ZnO alone and its cryogel, there was a significant reduction (p˂0.05) in cell viability of WI-38 normal lung cell line after the concentration of 209 and 164 µg/ml, respectively. It showed the low toxic effect of the nanocomposite and its cryogel on the WI-38 line which implies its safety. In addition, water treatment with the CS/GO/ZnO cryogel decreased turbidity (0.58 NTU), total coliform (2 CFU/100 ml), fecal coliform (1 CFU/100 ml), fecal Streptococcus (2 CFU/100 ml), and heterotrophic plate counts (53 CFU/1 ml) not only in comparison with the chlorine-treated samples (1.69 NTU, 4 CFU/100 ml, 6 CFU/100 ml, 57 CFU/100 ml, and 140 CFU/1 ml, respectively) but also with the raw water samples (6.9 NTU, 10800 CFU/100 ml, 660 CFU/100 ml, 800 CFU/100 ml, and 4400 CFU/1 ml, respectively). Moreover, cryogel significantly decreased the concentration of different heavy metals, especially cobalt compared to chlorine (0.004 ppm, 0.002 ppm, and 0.001 ppm for raw water, chlorine-treated, and cryogel-treated groups, respectively) which helped in the reduction of their toxic effects., Conclusion: This study provides an effective, promising, safe, and alternative nanocomposite to treat different human and animal pathogenic microbes that might be used in different environmental, industrial, and medical applications., (© 2024. Wound infections resulting from pathogen infiltration pose a significant challenge in healthcare settings and everyday life. When the skin barrier is compromised due to injuries, surgeries, or chronic conditions, pathogens such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses can enter the body, leading to infections. These infections can range from mild to severe, causing discomfort, delayed healing, and, in some cases, life-threatening complications. Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) have been widely recognized for their antimicrobial and wound healing properties, while cinnamic acid is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Based on these properties, the combination of ZnO NPs with cinnamic acid (CA) was hypothesized to have enhanced efficacy in addressing wound infections and promoting healing. This study aimed to synthesize and evaluate the potential of ZnO-CN NPs as a multifunctional agent for wound treatment. ZnO-CN NPs were synthesized and characterized using key techniques to confirm their structure and composition. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential of ZnO-CN NPs was evaluated through standard in vitro assays, demonstrating strong free radical scavenging and inhibition of protein denaturation. The antimicrobial activity of the nanoparticles was tested against common wound pathogens, revealing effective inhibition at a minimal concentration. A zebrafish wound healing model was employed to assess both the safety and therapeutic efficacy of the nanoparticles, showing no toxicity at tested concentrations and facilitating faster wound closure. Additionally, pro-inflammatory cytokine gene expression was analyzed to understand the role of ZnO-CN NPs in wound healing mechanisms. In conclusion, ZnO-CN NPs demonstrate potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, making them promising candidates for wound treatment. Nanotechnology is a fast-growing field with large number of applications. Therefore, the current study, was designed to prepare Zinc Oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) from A. modesta leaves extract through a cost-effective method. The prepared NPs were characterized through UV-Vis Spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The XRD and DLS analysis revealed the hexagonal nanocrystalline nature of ZnO NPs. The FTIR results displayed multiple fictional groups and UV results confirmed its optical properties. The average size of the NPs was 68.3 nm with a band gap of 2.71 eV. The SEM images divulge a clover leaf shape of ZnO NPs. The EDX spectrum revealed the presence of zinc and oxygen. The prepared NPs showed excellent biomedical application. The highest antileishmanial activity was 68%, anti-inflammatory activity was 78%, total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was 79.1%, antibacterial potential (ZOI) 22.1 mm, and highest growth inhibition of 85 ± 2.1% against A. rabiei. The adsorption efficiency of 85.3% within 120 min was obtained. Conclusively ZnO NPs have shown potential biomedical and environmental applications and ought to be the more investigated to enhance their practical use.

Infections originating from pathogenic microorganisms can significantly impede the natural wound-healing process. To address this obstacle, innovative bio-active nanomaterials have been developed to enhance antibacterial capabilities. This study focuses on the preparation of nanocomposites from thermally reduced graphene oxide and zinc oxide (TRGO/ZnO). The hydrothermal method was employed to synthesize these nanocomposites, and their physicochemical properties were comprehensively characterized using X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) techniques. Subsequently, the potential of TRGO/ZnO nanocomposites as bio-active materials against wound infection-causing bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli, was evaluated. Furthermore, the investigated samples show disrupted bacterial biofilm formation. A reactive oxygen species (ROS) assay was conducted to investigate the mechanism of nanocomposite inhibition against bacteria and for further in-vivo determination of antimicrobial activity. The MTT assay was performed to ensure the safety and biocompatibility of nanocomposite. The repair of critical bone defects caused by various clinical conditions needs to be addressed urgently, and the regeneration of large bone defects depends on early vascularization. Therefore, enhanced vascularization of artificial bone grafts may be a promising strategy for the regeneration of critical-sized bone defects. Taking into account the importance of rapid angiogenesis during bone repair and the potential of piezoelectric stimulation in promoting bone regeneration, novel coaxial electrospun mats coupled with piezoelectric materials and angiogenic drugs were fabricated in this study using coaxial electrospinning technology, with a shell layer loaded with atorvastatin (AVT) and a core layer loaded with zinc oxide (ZnO). AVT was used as an angiogenesis inducer, and piezoelectric stimulation generated by the zinc oxide was used as an osteogenesis enhancer. The multifunctional mats were characterized in terms of morphology, core-shell structure, piezoelectric properties, drug release, and mechanical properties, and their osteogenic and angiogenic capabilities were validated in vivo and ex vivo . The results revealed that the coaxial electrospun mats exhibit a porous surface morphology and nanofibers with a core-shell structure, and the piezoelectricity of the mats improved with increasing ZnO content. Excellent biocompatibility, hydrophilicity and cell adhesion were observed in the multifunctional mats. Early and rapid release of AVT in the fibrous shell layer of the mat promoted angiogenesis in human umbilical vascular endothelial cells (HUVECs), whereas ZnO in the fibrous core layer harvested bioenergy and converted it into electrical energy to enhance osteogenic differentiation of rat bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), and both modalities synergistically promoted osteogenesis and angiogenesis. Furthermore, optimal bone regeneration was achieved in a model of critical bone defects in the rat mandible. This osteogenesis-promoting effect was induced by electrical stimulation via activation of the calcium signaling pathway. This multifunctional mat coupling piezoelectric stimulation and atorvastatin promotes angiogenesis and bone regeneration, and shows great potential in the treatment of large bone defects.

Sunscreens are mainly characterized by their sun-protection factor (SPF), which is measured according to the in vivo gold standard ISO 24444. Although the SPF concept is simple, SPF values are difficult to measure, due to the rather high variability caused by the complex interaction of light and skin. For half a century, there have been attempts to correlate the costly and ethically controversial in vivo procedure with a non-invasive (in vitro) method. After decades of development, alternative non-invasive SPF methods are expected to become available as ISO standards in early 2025. In particular, sunscreen manufacturers who use zinc oxide (ZnO) in higher concentrations (conc.) (10-25%) in their formulations, are concerned that these new in vitro methods would not confirm the SPF-values on their labels that have been determined in vivo, according to ISO 24444. This brief review reveals that sunscreen formulations with high conc. of ZnO often yield SPF in vitro values that are lower than the SPF in vivo values. This can be explained by the fact that in vitro methods have been developed for conventional emulsions products with organic UV filters, but not for highly concentrated ZnO-alone sunscreens. Fortunately, there seems to be a fix for this problem. There is a difference in density between ordinary emulsions with organic filters (density of the residual oil phase ~ 1.0 g/ml) and highly concentrated ZnO-alone formulations (~ 1.3-1.7 g/ml). As the application of current standards is weight-based, this makes the film on the PMMA plate much thinner, which is likely to lead to lower SPF in vitro values. Preliminary experiments show that using the same volume on the PMMA plates instead of the same weight as organic UV filters gives a much better correlation between in vitro and in vivo SPF results. A recent evaluation of three samples of highly concentrated ZnO sunscreens by the Dutch NVWA seems to confirm these findings. The focus of current advances in nanotechnology has shifted significantly towards environmentally conscious methods that use harmless ingredients and moderated reaction circumstances to promote equitable development. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (NPs) currently grabbed attention of multiple medical fields owing to their unique ability to safeguard against cellular damage and alleviate serious human diseases via processes related to metabolism. This work focused on the generation of ZnO NPs using the peel of Cucumis melo fruit. The NPs were then analyzed and characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy. The results indicated that at a wavelength of 352 nm, it was proven that the biosynthesis of ZnO NPs had occurred. The XRD pattern indicated the presence of dense crystal structures. The field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) picture confirmed the existence of polygonal-shaped ZnO NPs. The findings indicate that the produced ZnO NPs possess tough antibacterial properties against Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms. When the ZnO NPs were exposed to direct sunshine for 80 min, they showed an 89% dye breakdown efficiency. This research specifically focused on the decomposition of reactivity dyes, with methylene blue dye being used as the target dye. Nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as a promising solution for many biomedical applications. Although not all particles have antimicrobial or regenerative properties, certain NPs show promise in enhancing wound healing by promoting tissue regeneration, reducing inflammation, and preventing infection. Integrating various NPs can further enhance these effects. Herein, the zinc oxide (ZnO)-MXene-Ag nanocomposite was prepared, and the conjugation of its three components was confirmed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) mapping analysis. In vitro analysis using the agar well diffusion technique demonstrated that ZnO-MXene-Ag nanocomposite exhibited high antimicrobial efficacy, significantly inhibiting Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and Candida albicans, and showing enhanced potency when combined with tetracycline, resulting in a 2.6-fold increase against Staphylococcus and a 2.4-fold increase against Pseudomonas. The efficacy of nanocomposite-loaded carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) gel on wound healing was investigated using varying concentrations (0, 1, 5, and 10 mg/mL). Wound healing was monitored over 21 days, with results indicating that wounds treated with 1 mg/mL ZnO-MXene-Ag gel exhibited superior healing compared to the control group (0 mg/mL), with significant improvements noted from Day 3 onward. Conversely, higher concentrations (10 mg/mL) resulted in reduced healing efficiency, particularly notable on Day 15. In conclusion, the ZnO-MXene-Ag nanocomposite-loaded CMC gel is a promising agent for enhanced wound healing and antimicrobial applications. Background: Tumor development and progression is a long and complex process influenced by a combination of intrinsic (eg, gene mutation) and extrinsic (eg, environmental pollution) factors. As a detoxification organ, the liver plays an important role in human exposure and response to various environmental pollutants including nanomaterials (NMs). Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignant tumors and remains a serious threat to human health. Whether NMs promote liver cancer progression remains elusive and assessing long-term exposure to subtoxic doses of nanoparticles (NPs) remains a challenge. In this study, we focused on the promotional effects of nano zinc oxide (nZnO) on the malignant progression of human HCC cells HepG2, especially aged nZnO that has undergone physicochemical transformation., Methods: In in vitro experiments, we performed colony forming efficiency, soft agar colony formation, and cell migration/invasion assays on HepG2 cells that had been exposed to a low dose of nZnO (1.5 μg/mL) for 3 or 4 months. In in vivo experiments, we subcutaneously inoculated HepG2 cells that had undergone long-term exposure to nZnO for 4 months into BALB/c athymic nude mice and observed tumor formation. ZnCl 2 was administered to determine the role of zinc ions., Results: Chronic low-dose exposure to nZnO significantly intensified the malignant progression of HCC cells, whereas aged nZnO may exacerbate the severity of malignant progression. Furthermore, through transcriptome sequencing analysis and in vitro cellular rescue experiments, we demonstrated that the mechanism of nZnO-induced malignant progression of HCC could be linked to the activation of Claudin-2 (CLDN2), one of the components of cellular tight junctions, and the dysregulation of its downstream signaling pathways., Conclusion: Long-term exposure of fresh and aged nZnO promotes hepatocellular carcinoma malignancy by up-regulating CLDN2. It is thought to be risk-free, environmentally benign, and safe for biological processes to produce zinc oxide nanoparticles from renewable resources. This study examined Cassia javanica's ability to create ZnONPs. The generated ZnONPs were analyzed using a variety of techniques, such as TEM, FTIR spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and XRD analysis. The antibacterial potential of ZnONPs has been investigated using both Agar well diffusion and microtitreplate (MTP) methods. One method used to evaluate ZnONPs' capacity to scavenge free radicals at different concentrations was the DPPH method. The permanent zinc oxide (ZnO) shape and the naturally occurring crystal structure of ZnONPs were validated by the XRD data. ZnONPs showed antibacterial activity with MICs of 31.7 μg/mL toward Bacillus subtilis, 62.5 μg/mL for Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli while Clostridium sporogenes and Bacillus pumilus was 125μg/mL. Furthermore, ZnONPs demonstrated a range of antibiofilm activities toward Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). ZnONPs showed an intriguing antioxidant capacity, achieving IC50 of 109.3 μg/ml μg/mL. Additionally, ZnONPs demonstrated low toxic effect on Vero cell with IC50 154.01 μg/mL as well as possible anticancer action when applied to the carcinoma cell lines HepG2 with IC50 of 47.48 μg/mL. Nitrogen deficiency in low organic matter soils significantly reduces crop yield and plant health. The effects of foliar applications of indole acetic acid (IAA), trehalose (TA), and nanoparticles-coated urea (NPCU) on the growth and physiological attributes of tomatoes in nitrogen-deficient soil are not well documented in the literature. This study aims to explore the influence of IAA, TA, and NPCU on tomato plants in nitrogen-deficient soil. Treatments included control, 2mM IAA, 0.1% TA, and 2mM IAA + 0.1% TA, applied with and without NPCU. Results showed that 2mM IAA + 0.1% TA with NPCU significantly improved shoot length (~ 30%), root length (~ 63%), plant fresh (~ 48%) and dry weight (~ 48%), number of leaves (~ 38%), and leaf area (~ 58%) compared to control (NPCU only). Additionally, significant improvements in chlorophyll content, total protein, and total soluble sugar, along with a decrease in antioxidant activity (POD, SOD, CAT, and APX), validated the effectiveness of 2mM IAA + 0.1% TA with NPCU. The combined application of 2mM IAA + 0.1% TA with NPCU can be recommended as an effective strategy to enhance tomato growth and yield in nitrogen-deficient soils. This approach can be integrated into current agricultural practices to improve crop resilience and productivity, especially in regions with poor soil fertility. Balanced bacterial metabolism is essential for cell homeostasis and growth and can be impacted by various stress factors. In particular, bacteria exposed to metals, including the nanoparticle form, can significantly alter their metabolic processes. It is known that the extensive and intensive use of food and feed supplements, including zinc, in human and animal nutrition alters the intestinal microbiota and this may negatively impact the health of the host. This study examines the effects of zinc (zinc oxide and zinc oxide nanoparticles) on key metabolic pathways of Escherichia coli. Transcriptomic and proteomic analyses along with quantification of intermediates of tricarboxylic acid (TCA) were employed to monitor and study the bacterial responses. Multi-omics analysis revealed that extended zinc exposure induced mainly oxidative stress and elevated expression/production of enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism, especially enzymes for synthesis of trehalose. After the zinc withdrawal, E. coli metabolism returned to a baseline state. These findings shed light on the alteration of TCA and on importance of trehalose synthesis in metal-induced stress and its broader implications for bacterial metabolism and defense and consequently for the balance and health of the human and animal microbiome., (© 2024. In this research, a novel active food packaging material was developed by blending starch, chitosan, and plant-based mucilage with zinc oxide nanoparticles. The polymeric nanocomposite film, created by incorporating zinc oxide nanoparticles into the mixture using a straightforward approach, was analyzed for its structural and functional attributes using FTIR, XRD, SEM, and TGA/DSC. These analyses revealed a robust interaction between the polymers' functional groups and the nanoparticles, forming a stable film. The film's mechanical properties, including tensile strength and Young's modulus, were high. It also showed reduced wettability and water solubility, enhancing water resistance. The biodegradability rate was 100 %. Antibacterial tests against Bacillus sp. and Pseudomonas sp. showed significant inhibition zones of 26 mm and 30 mm, respectively, demonstrating strong antibacterial effectiveness. The film's non-target toxicity was assessed through phytotoxicity experiments on Vigna angularis and soil nutrient evaluations, with no negative impact on plant growth or soil health observed. Aquaculture industry suffers significant limitations such as low resistance to diseases and expensive feed. This study investigated the antibacterial and immunostimulatory activities of ZnO-Ulva lactuca nanocomposite (ZnO-Ul NC) in the Procambarus clarkii. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and ZnO-Ul NC were synthetized and characterized by electron microscopies as well as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. ZnO NPs and ZnO-Ul NC inhibited the growth of the isolated species Citrobacter freundii and Enterobacter hormaechei. For immunostimulatory evaluation, six crayfish groups (control, U. lactuca, ZnO L, ZnO H, ZnO-Ul L, and ZnO-Ul H) were fed on commercial diet, Ulva lactuca powder, and low or high dose of ZnO NPs or ZnO-Ul NCs, respectively for 90 days. The highest levels of total hemocyte count, granular cells%, phenoloxidase (PO) activity in hemolymph, and NO, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and GSH in hepatopancreas were all reported in the ZnO-Ul groups. The expression of proPO, SOD, and lysozyme exhibited the highest upregulation in the ZnO-Ul H group. Taken together, dietary ZnO-Ul NC significantly improved the non-specific immunity and antioxidant milieu of the crayfish at the genomic and proteomic levels. This study employed a precipitation method to synthesize zinc oxide@quaternised chitosan nanoparticles (ZnO@QAC NPs) containing different concentrations of zinc oxide, namely ZnO@QAC-2, ZnO@QAC-4, and ZnO@QAC-6. Subsequently, these nanoparticles were incorporated into matrices consisting of gelatine (Gn) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) separately, which were prepared by casting to form a biodegradable film. We assessed the physicochemical properties of ZnO@QAC NPs and physicochemical characteristics, antioxidant properties, antimicrobial activity and grape preservation efficacy of the film. Compared to the control group, the films showed a reduction in water vapor permeability by >9.38 %, an increase in tensile strength by over 51.95 %, over 70 % scavenging of ABTS free radicals, and good biocompatibility. Additionally, the antimicrobial activity of the films containing ZnO@QAC-6 increased by 37.6 %. In the grape preservation experiment, the weight loss of grapes wrapped in ZnO@QAC-2 film was reduced by 40.13 % on day 15 compared to unwrapped grapes. This study synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) using a novel green approach, with Sida acuta leaf extract as a capping and reducing agent to initiate nucleation and structure formation. The innovation of this study lies in demonstrating the originality of utilizing zinc oxide nanoparticles for antibacterial action, antioxidant potential, and catalytic degradation of Congo red dye. This unique approach harnesses eco-friendly methods to initiate nucleation and structure formation. The synthesized nanoparticles' structure and conformation were characterized using UV-vis (λ max  = 280 nm), X-ray, atomic force microscopy, SEM, HR-TEM and FTIR. The antibacterial activity of the Nps was tested against Pseudomonas sp, Klebsiella sp, Staphylococcus aureus, and E. coli, demonstrating efficacy. The nanoparticles exhibited unique properties, with a crystallite size of 20 nm (XRD), a surface roughness of 2.5 nm (AFM), and a specific surface area of 60 m 2 /g (SEM). A Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) was effectively employed to accurately classify and analyze microscopic images of green-synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles. This research revealed their exceptional antioxidant potential, with an average DPPH scavenging rate of 80% at a concentration of 0.05 mg/mL. Additionally, zeta potential measurements indicated a stable net negative surface charge of approximately -12.2 mV. These quantitative findings highlight the promising applications of green-synthesized ZnO NPs in healthcare, materials science, and environmental remediation. The ZnO nanoparticles exhibited catalytic capabilities for dye degradation, and the degradation rate was determined using UV spectroscopy. Key findings of the study encompass the green synthesis of versatile zinc oxide nanoparticles, demonstrating potent antibacterial action, antioxidant capabilities, and catalytic dye degradation potential. With the emergence of drug-resistance, there is a need for novel anti-bacterials or to enhance the efficacy of existing drugs. In this study, Patuletin (PA), a flavanoid was loaded onto Gallic acid modified Zinc oxide nanoparticles (PA-GA-ZnO), and evaluated for antibacterial properties against Gram-positive (Bacillus cereus and Streptococcus pneumoniae) and Gram-negative (Samonella enterica and Escherichia coli) bacteria. Characterization of PA, GA-ZnO and PA-GA-ZnO' nanoparticles was accomplished utilizing fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, efficiency of drug entrapment, polydispersity index, zeta potential, size, and surface morphology analysis through atomic force microscopy. Using bactericidal assays, the results revealed that ZnO conjugation displayed remarkable effects and enhanced Patuletin's effects against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, with the minimum inhibitory concentration observed at micromolar concentrations. Cytopathogenicity assays exhibited that the drug-nanoconjugates reduced bacterial-mediated human cell death with minimal side effects to human cells. When tested alone, drug-nanoconjugates tested in this study showed limited toxic effects against human cells in vitro. These are promising findings, but future work is needed to understand the molecular mechanisms of effects of drug-nanoconjugates against bacterial pathogens, in addition to in vivo testing to determine their translational value. This study suggests that Patuletin-loaded nano-formulation (PA-GA-ZnO) may be implicated in a multi-target mechanism that affects both Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogen cell structures, however this needs to be ascertained in future work., (© 2024. In the study, Poly Vinyl Alcohol (PVA) films engineered with the nanoparticles and essential oils have been developed as efficient alternative to the currently used food packaging materials. For this, impact of cinnamon essential oil (CEO), on the metabolomic profile of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Aspergillus flavus was analysed. Subsequently, PVA based nanocomposite films CEO, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs), and nanocellulose (NC) were synthesised and characterized by FT-IR analysis. By the GC-MS analysis. The presence of ZnONPs enhanced the release of cinnamaldehyde from 31.16 to 44.23 and further enhancement to 71.82 was seen the presence of nanocellulose. The incorporation of NPs was found to enhance the hydrodynamic and mechanical properties of the prepared films. The final developed films, PZNCCEO, showed the least values for WHC and MC which were 56.31 ± 2.12 % and 13.30 ± 0 % respectively. Antimicrobial efficacy could also be demonstrated through the observation on changes in the morphological features of treated S. aureus and E. coli by the FE-SEM. The study aimed to assess the impact of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) on rats' neurobehavior compared to bulk zinc oxide (BZnO). Thirty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to five groups. The control group received Tween 80 (10%), while the ZnONP groups were given ZnONPs at 5 and 10 mg/kg body weight dosages, and the bulk zinc oxide (BZnO) groups received BZnO at the same dosages. Behavioral observations, neurobehavioral examinations, and assessments of brain tissue oxidative markers, neurotransmitter levels, and histopathological changes were performed. The results indicated that ZnONP at a dosage of 5 mg/kg improved general behavior, locomotor activity, memory, and recognition and reduced fearfulness in rats. Conversely, the higher dosage of 10 mg/kg and the bulk form had adverse effects on general behavior, locomotor activity, and learning ability, with the bulk form demonstrating the most severe impact-znONP-5 treatment increased antioxidant enzyme levels and decreased inflammatory markers. BZnO-5 exhibited lower oxidative stress markers, although still higher than BZnO-10. Furthermore, ZnONP-5 and BZnO-5 increased neurotransmitter levels compared to higher dosages. ZnONP-5 upregulated the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) mRNA, while BZnO-5 showed increased BDNF mRNA expression and decreased expression of genes related to apoptosis and inflammation. In summary, ZnONPs at 5 mg/kg demonstrated positive effects on rat brain function and behavior, while higher dosages and the bulk form had detrimental effects. Background: P. aeruginosa, a biofilm-forming bacteria, is the main cause of pulmonary infection in CF patients. We applied ZnO-np as a therapeutic agent for eradicating multi-drug resistance and biofilm-forming P. aeruginosa isolated from young CF patients., Methods: A total of 73 throat and sputum samples taken from young CF patients were inquired. ZnO-np was synthesized and characterized in terms of size, shape, and structure for anti-bacterial activity. The antibiotic susceptibility of isolates before and after the addition of 16 μg/ml of ZnO was evaluated using disc diffusion and microtiter methods, respectively. The gene expression level of QS genes was assessed after treatment with 16 μg/ml ZnO-np., Results: The optimum concentration of ZnO-np with a higher inhibitory zone was 16 μg/ml (MIC) and 32 μg/ml (MBC). All isolates were resistant to applied antibiotics, and about 45 % of isolates were strong biofilm-forming bacteria. After treatment with 16 μg/ml ZnO-np, all strains became susceptible to the applied antibiotic except for amikacin, which confers an intermediate pattern. About 63 % and 20 % of isolates were, respectively, non-biofilm and weak biofilm-forming bacteria following the addition of ZnO-np. Relative gene expression of gacA, lasR, and rhlR genes were downregulated significantly (P < 0.001). Although the retS did not have a significant reduction (P = 0.2) CONCLUSION: ZnO-np at a concentration of 16 μg/ml could significantly reduce the P. aeruginosa infection by altering the antibiotic susceptibility pattern and inhibiting biofilm formation. Due to their photocatalytic properties and their ability to penetrate the extracellular polysaccharide layer, ZnO nanoparticles can produce ROS, which increases their susceptibility to antibiotics. The fruit Pyrus communis, owing to its presence of phenolics and flavonoids, was chosen for its nanoparticle's reducing and stabilizing properties. Furthermore, the zinc metal may be nano-absorbed by the human body. As a result, the study involves synthesizing zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) from P. communis fruit extract using the green method. The synthesized nanoparticle was examined with a UV-visible spectrophotometer, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS). When absorption studies were performed with a UV-visible spectrophotometer, the nanoparticle exhibited a blue shift. The FTIR spectrum revealed the molecular groups present in both the fruit extract and metal. In the SEM analysis, the ZnO NPs appeared as spherical particles, agglomerated together, and of nano-size. The larger size of the ZnO NPs in DLS can be attributed to their ability to absorb water. After characterization, nanoparticles were tested for anti-diabetic (α-amylase and yeast glucose uptake activity) and anti-microbial properties. The α-amylase inhibition percentage was 46.46 ± 0.15% for 100 μg/mL, which was comparable to the acarbose inhibition percentage of 50.58 ± 0.67% at the same concentration. The yeast glucose uptake activity was 64.24 ± 0.80% at 20 mM glucose concentration, which was comparable to the standard of 78.03 ± 0.80.
