Efficient and eco-friendly technologies are required to reduce the environmental effects of the beneficiation plants. Recently, there has been an interest in environmentally friendly alternative depressants. This study explored the effects of various depressants (AERO633, AERO7260, DP3124, DP3125, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), Cyquest4000, and sodium silicate) on chalcopyrite flotation. The experimental results indicated that AERO7260 has the best effect on chalcopyrite flotation, and the dosage is 50 g/t, it can improve the chalcopyrite recovery up to 93.35% as well as chalcopyrite grade up to 36.97%. Meanwhile, AERO7260 had an obvious depression effect on pyrite, reducing pyrite grade to 61.10% and pyrite recovery to 3.35%. Given its low reagent dosage and high selectivity, AERO7260 is a promising depressant that can be used for chalcopyrite flotation. The use of organic depressants will significantly aid the transition to ecologically friendly and sustainable processes. This study shows that organic depressants in chalcopyrite flotation can replace the existing inorganic depressants used in the depression of gangue minerals and that metals can be recovered at high performance by processing appropriately. Sexual harassment is pervasive globally within hospitality organizations. This conceptual study identifies organizational climate characteristics that make the restaurant work environment unique as compared to other industries. The work environment is based upon keeping the customer happy, includes gender gaps in power structures, emphasis on appearances, entrepreneurial in nature, the physical work environment, and alcohol is served. A framework for sexual harassment training must consider organizational factors, pre/post training, design, and evaluation. When attempting to land on a ship deck tossed by the sea, helicopter pilots must make sure that the helicopter can develop sufficient lift to be able to safely touchdown. This reminder of affordance theory led us to model and study the affordance of deck-landing-ability, which defines whether it is possible to land safely on a ship deck depending on the helicopter's available lift and the ship's deck heave movements. Two groups of participants with no piloting experience using a laptop helicopter simulator attempted to land either a low-lifter or a heavy-lifter helicopter on a virtual ship deck by either triggering a pre-programmed lift serving as the descent law if it was deemed possible to land, or aborting the deck-landing maneuver. The deck-landing-ability was manipulated by varying the helicopter's initial altitude and the ship's heave phase between trials. We designed a visual augmentation making visible the deck-landing-ability, and thus enabling participants to maximize the safety of their deck-landing attempts and reduce the number of unsafe deck-landing. The visual augmentation presented here was perceived by participants as a means of facilitating this decision-making process. The benefits were found to have originated from the clear-cut distinction it helped them to make between safe and unsafe deck-landing windows and the display of the optimal time for initiating the landing. Enriched tungsten disulfide (186WS2) was evaluated at increasing proton beam currents (20–50 μA) and times (up to 4 h) on a GE PETtrace cyclotron for production of high specific activity (HSA) 186Re. The HSA 186Re was separated from the irradiated target as [186Re][ReO4]– by a liquid–liquid extraction method and radiolabeled with a new N2S2 ligand (222-MAMA-N-ethylpropionate). The enriched 186W was recovered from the extraction process, analyzed for purity and enrichment, and converted back to the disulfide (186WS2). The results demonstrate that the 186WS2 is an easily pressed target material that can withstand relatively high currents and can be readily recovered and recycled. The 186Re produced was isolated in high specific activity and readily formed the radiotracers [186Re][ReO(222-MAMA-N-ethylpropionate)] and [186Re][Re(CO)3(OH2)3] +. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a comparative study on several issues of the microscopic stress definitions. Firstly, we derived an Irving-Kirkwood formulation for Cauchy stress evaluation in Eulerian coordinates. We showed that quantities, such as density and momentum, should to be defined properly on microscopic level in order to guarantee the conservation relations on macroscopic level. Secondly, the relation between Cauchy and first Piola-Kirchhoff stress was investigated both theoretically and numerically. At zero temperature, classical pointwise relation between these two stress is satisfied both in Virial and Hardy formulation. While at finite temperature, temporal averaging is required to guarantee this relation for Virial formulation. For Hardy formulation, an additional term need to be included in the classical relation between the Cauchy stress and the first Piola-Kirchhoff stress. Meanwhle, the linear relation between the Cauchy stress and the first Piola-Kirchhoff stress with respect to the temperature are obtained in both Virial and Hardy formulations. The thermal expansion coefficients are also studied by using quasi-harmonic approximation. Thirdly, different from that in the Lagrangian coordinates case, where the time averaging procedure can be performed in a post-processing manner when the kernel function is separable, the stress evaluation in Eulerian system must be evaluated spatially and temporally at the same time, even in separable kernel case. Objective: This study aims at investigating helicopter pilots' strategies to achieve ship deck landing. Background: Helicopter maritime operations are challenging, especially when it comes to landing on the moving decks of small ships, such as frigates, which can lead to dramatic accidents. Method: Expert pilots were requested to fly the full ship landing maneuver from approach to touchdown in an immersive simulator. Two sea states (3 and 4 on the Douglas Sea scale) and their resulting deck movements were used. Changes in helicopter altitude were correlated with deck heave movements throughout the maneuvers in order to scrutinize the helicopter-deck coupling. The energy at impact was measured. Results: The dynamics of helicopter-deck coupling evolved through two phases during the maneuver: Initially, no coupling then, coupling in phase between the helicopter vertical displacements and deck heave displacements. Moreover, the coupling reached higher values within the last 15 m to landing, corresponding to a hover phase and touchdown, and the correlation increased with sea level. This coupling might help in improving pilots' safety since the greater the coupling at touchdown, the lesser the kinetic energy at impact. Conclusion: Coupling the helicopter vertical displacements with ship heave movements seems to be an efficient strategy to minimize energy at impact. Coal preparation plants are increasingly turning to alternative sources of water to reduce their consumption of fresh water. These alternative sources can vary significantly in ionic content. This review discusses the effect of dissolved inorganic electrolytes on coal flotation. It is argued that increasing process monitoring will enable a better understanding of the effects of salts on the flotation process. A pragmatic approach in monitoring is essential to differentiate significant factors from insignificant ones controlling the performance of coal flotation units in salt water. This review describes the development of single‐photon emission tomography (SPECT) in the Copenhagen area under the leadership of the internationally renown scientist, Niels A. Lassen, and the history leading up to construction of the tomograph. Measurements of global cerebral blood flow (CBF) in the 1940s and 1950s were performed by Kety & Schmidt and Lassen & Munck. Determination of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) by intra‐arterial injection of 133Xe and measurement with a 254‐multicrystal scintillation detector and a computer system was a major step forward in the study of physiology and pathophysiology of cortical cerebral blood flow. Tomography with radioisotope ligands, including non‐invasive administration, was advanced in different centres during the 1970s. An emission tomograph, the Tomomatic 64, was developed as a result of a multidisciplinary Danish and international collaboration. It was the first emission tomograph to provide dynamic data that could produce cross‐sectional rCBF images. The present description of the construction and function of the Tomomatic 64 includes comparison with other contemporary and later brain‐dedicated SPECT systems. Basic and clinical application of the Tomomatic 64 in Copenhagen resulted in several hundred important scientific publications and improved diagnostics for patients with a variety of neurological disorders. It is concluded that the development of the Tomomatic 64 was a major step forward in the study and examination of rCBF and brain function related to several brain disorders, in addition to vascular diseases. Geometrical approach to continuum mechanics allowing an atomistic treatment is developed. It suggests a body as a surface immersed into ambient space. Four kinds of surfaces inherent to basic deformations determine classical dynamics of the atoms alongside their spatial coordinates. For uniaxial stretch, this surface is isomorphic to the cylinder. For a simple shear, it is the twisted cylinder, for a bending — a cone, and for a torsion — a helicoid. Scalar parameters of the metric of these surfaces that are stretch ratios, shear, cone, and torsion angles used instead of the strain tensor constitute extra coordinates of the particles in hypersurface. Correspondingly, vector-valued tensions are used instead of stress. In the case of pure deformation, the normal and extra coordinates of atoms obey the classical equation of motion admitting periodic boundary conditions. It is shown how the employing of artificial orders of freedom leads to a minimum of elastic energy. In boundary problems, the system of governing equations unambiguously reproduce the stress–strain–displacement relations with the help of using the tension boundary theorem instead of the Cauchy traction principle. The derived direct method of elastostatic makes the system of governing equations closed and the compatibility condition unnecessary. Ischemic heart disease remains a significant public health concern, accentuating the importance of basic research and therapeutic studies of small animals in which myocardial changes can be reproducibly detected and quantified. Few or no studies have investigated the performance of microSPECT in quantifying myocardial lesions. We utilized three versions of a multi-compartment phantom containing two left ventricular myocardial compartments (one uniform and one with a transmural 'cold' defect), a ventricular blood pool, and a background compartment, where each version had a different myocardial wall thickness (0.75, 1.0 and 1.25 mm). Each compartment was imaged separately while acquiring list-mode data. The separate compartment data were manipulated into a single data set with a known defect contrast, blood-pool and background activity. Data were processed with background-free defect-contrast values of 0 (no defect), −0.25, −0.5, −0.75, and −1.0 (all defect), three ratios of blood-pool to myocardial activity, 0 (no blood pool activity), 0.1, and 0.2 (20% of the activity in the healthy myocardial compartment), and three ratios of uniform background 0 (no background activity), 0.1 and 0.2, relative to the healthy myocardial compartment. For each wall thickness, defect contrast, blood-pool, and background activity combination, 25 list-mode noise realizations were generated and reconstructed. Volumes of interest were drawn and used to determine mean contrast recovery coefficients (CRCs) over the noise ensembles. We developed a slope-analysis procedure to estimate a single CRC over all contrast levels, with resulting CRC values (for no blood-pool and no background) of 0.848, 0.946, and 0.834 for the 0.75, 1.0, and 1.25 mm wall thicknesses, respectively. We also determined and validated a reprocessing method to calculate an ideal CRC. This work demonstrates the quantitative abilities of microSPECT for myocardial-defect imaging utilizing CRC and establishes a framework for evaluating defect-imaging capabilities in other systems. Brain perfusion SPECT can be used in the diagnosis of various neurologic or psychiatric disorders, e.g. stroke, epilepsy, dementia and posttraumatic stress disorder. As traditional SPECT provides limited resolution and sensitivity, we recently proposed a high resolution focusing multi-pinhole clinical SPECT scanner dubbed G-SPECT-I (Beekman et al 2015, Eur. J. Nucl. Med. Mol. Imaging 42 S209). G-SPECT-I achieves data completeness in the scan region of interest (ROI) by making small translations of the patient bed while using projections from all bed positions together for image reconstruction. A strategy to restrict the number of bed translations is desired to minimize overhead time. Previously we presented optimized bed translation paths for focused partial brain imaging, while here we focus on whole brain imaging which is the common procedure in perfusion studies. Thus, a series of noise-free scans using a reduced number of bed positions were simulated and compared to an oversampled reference scan acquired with 128 bed positions. Noisy simulations were included to validate the utility of the optimized sequences in more realistic situations. Brain uptake ratios (BURs) and left–right Asymmetry Indices (AIs) in 51 selected regions of interest (ROIs) were calculated for assessment. Results show that images were barely affected by decreasing the number of bed positions from 128 down to 18 (mean deviation from the reference of only 2.2% and 1.5% for the BUR and AI, respectively) while slightly larger deviations (2.9% and 2.7%, respectively) were obtained when using 12 positions. For both 18- and 12-position sequences these deviations due to sampling were much smaller than those induced by noise (mean deviation of 6.5% and 8.6%, respectively). Given an associated total overhead for bed movement of half a minute (18 positions) or 20 s (12 positions), G-SPECT-I can be a clinical platform that brings new protocols for fast (dynamic) whole brain SPECT and motion correction into reach. In this prospective study, we postulate that there is a difference between clearance of [99mTc]Tc- ethyl cysteinate dimer (ECD) in the seizure onset zone (SOZ) and other brain areas and thus SOZ localization by clearance patterns might become a potential novel method for SOZ localization in epilepsy. The parametric images of brain ECD clearance were generated by linear regression model analysis from serial brain SPECT scans from 30 to 240 min after ECD injection (7-times point) in 7 patients with drug-resistant epilepsy and 3 normal volunteers. Clearance patterns of the SOZ confirmed by good surgical outcome or consensus with other investigations were analyzed quantitatively and semi-quantitatively by visual grading (slower or faster washout than contralateral brain regions). The average [ 99m Tc]Tc-ECD clearance rates of SOZs were + 1.08% ± 2.57%/hr (wash in), -7.02% ± 2.56%/hr (washout), and -5.37% ± 1.71%/hr (washout) in ictal, aura and interictal states, respectively. Paired t-tests between the SOZ and contralateral regions showed statistically significant difference (p = 0.039 in interictal state). Clearance patterns that can define the SOZs were 1) wash in and slow washout on ictal slope, 2) fast washout on aura slope and interictal slope with 100% (6/6), 100% (2/2) and 75% (6/8) localization using ictal, aura, and interictal slope maps, respectively. Our study provided the evidence that clearance pattern methods are potential additive diagnostic tools for SOZ localization when routine one-time point SPECT are unable to define the SOZ., (© 2022. Deriving accurate attenuation maps for PET/MRI remains a challenging problem because MRI voxel intensities are not related to properties of photon attenuation and bone/air interfaces have similarly low signal. This work presents a learning-based method to derive patient-specific computed tomography (CT) maps from routine T1-weighted MRI in their native space for attenuation correction of brain PET. We developed a machine-learning-based method using a sequence of alternating random forests under the framework of an iterative refinement model. Anatomical feature selection is included in both training and predication stages to achieve optimal performance. To evaluate its accuracy, we retrospectively investigated 17 patients, each of which has been scanned by PET/CT and MR for brain. The PET images were corrected for attenuation on CT images as ground truth, as well as on pseudo CT (PCT) images generated from MR images. The PCT images showed mean average error of 66.1 ± 8.5 HU, average correlation coefficient of 0.974 ± 0.018 and average Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) larger than 0.85 for air, bone and soft tissue. The side-by-side image comparisons and joint histograms demonstrated very good agreement of PET images after correction by PCT and CT. The mean differences of voxel values in selected VOIs were less than 4%, the mean absolute difference of all active area is around 2.5%, and the mean linear correlation coefficient is 0.989 ± 0.017 between PET images corrected by CT and PCT. This work demonstrates a novel learning-based approach to automatically generate CT images from routine T1-weighted MR images based on a random forest regression with patch-based anatomical signatures to effectively capture the relationship between the CT and MR images. Minerals, though needed in small quantities, are essential to metabolic processes, and deficiencies can seriously threaten health, reproduction and survival. Despite this, few studies have measured mineral composition of wild primate foods and fewer have quantified mineral intake. Here we measured the concentration of nine minerals in 75 foods of diademed sifakas ( Propithecus diadema; five groups) in habitats with varying levels of disturbance at Tsinjoarivo and estimated daily intakes using focal-animal feeding data and intake rates over one year. For six minerals (Ca, P, Na, Fe, Zn, and Cu), mean concentrations in foods fell short of the National Research Council's (NRC) recommendations for captive primates. Concentrations were highest in lianas, herbs, and epiphytes, and hemiparasites had exceptionally high Na. Leaves tended to have higher concentrations than fruits or flowers, but overlap was extensive. Mineral concentrations in daily diets varied little seasonally, but absolute intakes (g/day) were higher in the abundant season, due to the increase in food ingested. Disturbed habitat groups' diets had higher mineral concentrations for five minerals, but this translated into increased intakes only for Cu, as these groups ate less food overall. Overall, comparisons with percentage-based NRC recommendations suggests deficiencies, but this is contradicted by: (1) the fact that mass-specific intakes exceeded human recommendations, and (2) the lack of observed signs of deficiency. Ongoing efforts to quantify mineral consumption across wild primate populations and better understanding requirements on both a percentage and absolute basis will help in understanding effects on food selection, managing primate habitats and formulating captive diets. Habitat disturbance from development, resource extraction, off-road vehicle use, and energy development ranks highly among threats to desert systems worldwide. In the Mojave Desert, United States, these disturbances have promoted the establishment of nonnative plants, so that native grasses and forbs are now intermixed with, or have been replaced by invasive, nonnative Mediterranean grasses. This shift in plant composition has altered food availability for Mojave Desert tortoises (Gopherus agassizii), a federally listed species. We hypothesized that this change in forage would negatively influence the physiological ecology, immune competence, and health of neonatal and yearling tortoises. To test this, we monitored the effects of diet on growth, body condition, immunological responses (measured by gene transcription), and survival for 100 captive Mojave tortoises. Tortoises were assigned to one of five diets: native forbs, native grass, invasive grass, and native forbs combined with either the native or invasive grass. Tortoises eating native forbs had better body condition and immune functions, grew more, and had higher survival rates (>95%) than tortoises consuming any other diet. At the end of the experiment, 32% of individuals fed only native grass and 37% fed only invasive grass were found dead or removed from the experiment due to poor body conditions. In contrast, all tortoises fed either the native forb or combined native forb and native grass diets survived and were in good condition. Health and body condition quickly declined for tortoises fed only the native grass (Festuca octoflora) or invasive grass (Bromus rubens) with notable loss of fat and muscle mass and increased muscular atrophy. Bromus rubens seeds were found embedded in the oral mucosa and tongue in most individuals eating that diet, which led to mucosal inflammation. Genes indicative of physiological, immune, and metabolic functions were transcribed at lower levels for individuals fed B. rubens, indicating potential greater susceptibility to disease or other health-related problems. This study highlights the negative indirect effects of invasive grasses, such as red brome, in desert ecosystems, and provides definitive evidence of a larger negative consequence to health, survival, and ultimately population recruitment for Mojave Desert tortoises than previously understood. The effect of carbenes as Lewis donor groups on the homoaromaticity of mono- and bicyclic organic molecules is surveyed. The search for viable carbene-stabilised homoaromatics resulted in a large amount of rejected candidates as well as nine promising candidates that are further analysed for their homoaromaticity by using a number of metrics. Of these, five appeared to show modest homoaromaticity, whereas another compound showed a level of homoaromaticity comparable with the homotropylium cation benchmark compound. Isoelectronic analogues and constitutional isomers of the lead compound were investigated, however, none of these showed comparable homoaromaticity. ABSTRACT Wildfires burned 24,254 ha of critical habitat designated for the recovery of the threatened Mojave desert tortoise ( Gopherus agassizii) in southern Nevada during 2005. The proliferation of non-native annual grasses has increased wildfire frequency and extent in recent decades and continues to accelerate the conversion of tortoise habitat across the Mojave Desert. Immediate changes to vegetation are expected to reduce quality of critical habitat, yet whether tortoises will use burned and recovering habitat differently from intact unburned habitat is unknown. We compared movement patterns, home-range size, behavior, microhabitat use, reproduction, and survival for adult desert tortoises located in, and adjacent to, burned habitat to understand how tortoises respond to recovering burned habitat. Approximately 45% of home ranges in the post-fire environment contained burned habitat, and numerous observations ( n = 12,223) corroborated tortoise use of both habitat types (52% unburned, 48% burned). Tortoises moved progressively deeper into burned habitat during the first 5 years following the fire, frequently foraging in burned habitats that had abundant annual plants, and returning to adjacent unburned habitat for cover provided by intact perennial vegetation. However, by years 6 and 7, the live cover of the short-lived herbaceous perennial desert globemallow ( Sphaeralcea ambigua) that typically re-colonizes burned areas declined, resulting in a contraction of tortoise movements from the burned areas. Health and egg production were similar between burned and unburned areas indicating that tortoises were able to acquire necessary resources using both areas. This study documents that adult Mojave desert tortoises continue to use habitat burned once by wildfire. Thus, continued management of this burned habitat may contribute toward the recovery of the species in the face of many sources of habitat loss. Published 2015. Recurrent event data is frequently encountered in biomedical research. Estimators describing the time to the next event occurrence could be useful information in healthcare settings to deliver targeted, preemptive, patient-specific care. Distribution estimation of recurrence times is varied based on both the underlying assumptions of the estimator (e.g., dependence vs. independence of recurrence times within individual) and estimator construct. In an example among Veterans with spinal cord injury, distributional changes in recurrence times of health complications subsequent lower extremity (LE) fracture are explored. Veterans with LE fracture (cases) were matched to Veterans without LE fracture (controls) on demographic (age, race), level of injury (paraplegia vs. tetraplegia), extent of injury, Veterans Affairs connected service status, and comorbidities using Mahalanobis metric matching. Stratified distributional estimates of recurrence times between successive morbidity outcomes are compared between Veterans with/without LE fracture using three estimators: independent identically distributed product limit estimator, Wang-Chang product limit estimator, and a gamma frailty maximum likelihood estimator. It can be seen that the estimator selection can provide a very different showcasing of a recurrence time distribution. There is a change in the time-to-recurrence of recurrent urinary tract infections and pressure ulcers for fracture cases directly following LE fracture, however testing if this difference is statistically significant remains unclear. Due to their short-range (2–500 nm), Auger electrons (Auger e−) have the potential to induce nano-scale physiochemical damage to biomolecules. Although DNA is the primary target of Auger e−, it remains challenging to maximize the interaction between Auger e− and DNA. To assess the DNA-damaging effect of Auger e− released as close as possible to DNA without chemical damage, we radio-synthesized no-carrier-added (n.c.a.) [189, 191Pt]cisplatin and evaluated both its in vitro properties and DNA-damaging effect. Cellular uptake, intracellular distribution, and DNA binding were investigated, and DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) were evaluated by immunofluorescence staining of γH2AX and gel electrophoresis of plasmid DNA. Approximately 20% of intracellular radio-Pt was in a nucleus, and about 2% of intra-nucleus radio-Pt bound to DNA, although uptake of n.c.a. radio-cisplatin was low (0.6% incubated dose after 25-h incubation), resulting in the frequency of cells with γH2AX foci was low (1%). Nevertheless, some cells treated with radio-cisplatin had γH2AX aggregates unlike non-radioactive cisplatin. These findings suggest n.c.a. radio-cisplatin binding to DNA causes severe DSBs by the release of Auger e− very close to DNA without chemical damage by carriers. Insulins, relaxins, and other insulin-like peptides present a longstanding synthetic challenge due to their unique cysteine-rich heterodimeric structure. While their three disulfide signature is conserved within the insulin superfamily, sequences of the constituent chains exhibit considerable diversity. As a result, methods which rely on sequence-specific strategies fail to provide universal access to these important molecules. Biomimetic methods utilizing native and chemical linkers to tether the A-chain N-terminus to the B-chain C-terminus, entail complicated installation, and require a unique proteolytic site, or a two-step chemical release. Here we present a strategy employing a linkage of the A- and B-chains N-termini offering unrestricted access to these targets. The approach utilizes a symmetrical linker which is released in a single chemical step. The simplicity, efficiency, and scope of the method are demonstrated in the synthesis of insulin, relaxin, a 4-disulfide insulin analog, two penicillamine-substituted insulins, and a prandial insulin lispro. Insulin and related heterodimeric peptides are challenging synthetic targets, and are commonly made using biomimetic N-to-C chemical linkers which can take two steps to remove. A procedure to estimate the activity in target tissues in patients during the therapeutic administration of 131I radiopharmaceutical treatment for thyroid conditions (hyperthyroidism and differentiated thyroid cancer) using a gamma camera (GC) with a high energy (HE) collimator, is proposed. Planar images are acquired for lesions of different sizes r, and at different distances d, in two HE GC systems. Defining a region of interest (ROI) on the image of size r, total counts ng are measured. Sensitivity S (cps MBq−1) in each acquisition is estimated as the product of the geometric G and the intrinsic efficiency η0. The mean fluence of 364 keV photons arriving at the ROI per disintegration G, is calculated with the MCNPX code, simulating the entire GC and the HE collimator. Intrinsic efficiency η0 is estimated from a calibration measurement of a plane reference source of 131I in air. Values of G and S for two GC systems—Philips Skylight and Siemens e-cam—are calculated. The total range of possible sensitivity values in thyroidal imaging in the e-cam and skylight GC measure from 7 cps MBq−1 to 35 cps MBq−1, and from 6 cps MBq−1 to 29 cps MBq−1, respectively. These sensitivity values have been verified with the SIMIND code, with good agreement between them. The results have been validated with experimental measurements in air, and in a medium with scatter and attenuation. The counts in the ROI can be produced by direct, scatter and penetration photons. The fluence value for direct photons is constant for any r and d values, but scatter and penetration photons show different values related to specific r and d values, resulting in the large sensitivity differences found. The sensitivity in thyroidal GC planar imaging is strongly dependent on uptake size, and distance from the GC. An individual value for the acquisition sensitivity of each lesion can significantly alleviate the level of uncertainty in the measurement of thyroid uptake activity for each patient. Cyclotron-produced 99mTc (CPTc) has been recognized as an attractive and practical substitution of reactor/generator based 99mTc. However, the small amount of 92-98Mo in the irradiation of enriched 100Mo could lead to the production of other radioactive technetium isotopes (Tc-impurities) which cannot be chemically separated. Thus, these impurities could contribute to patient dose and affect image quality. The potential radiation dose caused by these Tc-impurities produced using different targets, irradiation conditions, and corresponding to different injection times have been investigated, leading us to create dose-based limits of these parameters for producing clinically acceptable CPTc. However, image quality has been not considered. The aim of the present work is to provide a comprehensive and quantitative analysis of image quality for CPTc. The impact of Tc-impurities in CPTc on image resolution, background noise, and contrast is investigated by performing both Monte-Carlo simulations and phantom experiments. Various targets, irradiation, and acquisition conditions are employed for investigating the image-based limits of CPTc production parameters. Additionally, the relationship between patient dose and image quality of CPTc samples is studied. Dual-isotope simultaneous-acquisition (DISA) rest-stress myocardial perfusion SPECT (MPS) protocols offer a number of advantages over separate acquisition. However, crosstalk contamination due to scatter in the patient and interactions in the collimator degrade image quality. Compensation can reduce the effects of crosstalk, but does not entirely eliminate image degradations. Optimizing acquisition parameters could further reduce the impact of crosstalk. In this paper we investigate the optimization of the rest Tl-201 energy window width and relative injected activities using the ideal observer (IO), a realistic digital phantom population and Monte Carlo (MC) simulated Tc-99m and Tl-201 projections as a means to improve image quality. We compared performance on a perfusion defect detection task for Tl-201 acquisition energy window widths varying from 4 to 40 keV centered at 72 keV for a camera with a 9% energy resolution. We also investigated 7 different relative injected activities, defined as the ratio of Tc-99m and Tl-201 activities, while keeping the total effective dose constant at 13.5 mSv. For each energy window and relative injected activity, we computed the IO test statistics using a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method for an ensemble of 1,620 triplets of fixed and reversible defect-present, and defect-absent noisy images modeling realistic background variations. The volume under the 3-class receiver operating characteristic (ROC) surface (VUS) was estimated and served as the figure of merit. For simultaneous acquisition, the IO suggested that relative Tc-to-Tl injected activity ratios of 2.6–5 and acquisition energy window widths of 16–22% were optimal. For separate acquisition, we observed a broad range of optimal relative injected activities from 2.6 to 12.1 and acquisition energy window of widths 16–22%. A negative correlation between Tl-201 injected activity and the width of the Tl-201 energy window was observed in these ranges. The results also suggested that DISA methods could potentially provide image quality as good as that obtained with separate acquisition protocols. We compared observer performance for the optimized protocols and the current clinical protocol using separate acquisition. The current clinical protocols provided better performance at a cost of injecting the patient with approximately double the injected activity of Tc-99m and Tl-201, resulting in substantially increased radiation dose. An advantage of semiconductor-based dedicated cardiac single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) cameras when compared to conventional Anger cameras is superior energy resolution. This provides the potential for improved separation of the photopeaks in dual radionuclide imaging, such as combined use of 99mTc and 123I . There is, however, the added complexity of tailing effects in the detectors that must be accounted for. In this paper we present a model-based correction algorithm which extracts the useful primary counts of 99mTc and 123I from projection data. Equations describing the in-patient scatter and tailing effects in the detectors are iteratively solved for both radionuclides simultaneously using a maximum a posteriori probability algorithm with one-step-late evaluation. Energy window-dependent parameters for the equations describing in-patient scatter are estimated using Monte Carlo simulations. Parameters for the equations describing tailing effects are estimated using virtually scatter-free experimental measurements on a dedicated cardiac SPECT camera with CdZnTe-detectors. When applied to a phantom study with both 99mTc and 123I, results show that the estimated spatial distribution of events from 99mTc in the 99mTc photopeak energy window is very similar to that measured in a single 99mTc phantom study. The theory of task-based assessment of image quality is reviewed in the context of imaging with ionizing radiation, and objective figures of merit (FOMs) for image quality are summarized. The variation of the FOMs with the task, the observer and especially with the mean number of photons recorded in the image is discussed. Then various standard methods for specifying radiation dose are reviewed and related to the mean number of photons in the image and hence to image quality. Current knowledge of the relation between local radiation dose and the risk of various adverse effects is summarized, and some graphical depictions of the tradeoffs between image quality and risk are introduced.
