Extract-then-Abstract is a naturally coherent paradigm to conduct abstractive summarization with the help of salient information identified by the extractive model. Previous works that adopt this paradigm train the extractor and abstractor separately and introduce extra parameters to highlight the extracted salients to the abstractor, which results in error accumulation and additional training costs. In this paper, we first introduce a parameter-free highlight method into the encoder-decoder framework: replacing the encoder attention mask with a saliency mask in the cross-attention module to force the decoder to focus only on salient parts of the input. A preliminary analysis compares different highlight methods, demonstrating the effectiveness of our saliency mask. We further propose the novel extract-and-abstract paradigm, ExtAbs, which jointly and seamlessly performs Extractive and Abstractive summarization tasks within single encoder-decoder model to reduce error accumulation. In ExtAbs, the vanilla encoder is augmented to extract salients, and the vanilla decoder is modified with the proposed saliency mask to generate summaries. Built upon BART and PEGASUS, experiments on three datasets show that ExtAbs can achieve superior performance than baselines on the extractive task and performs comparable, or even better than the vanilla models on the abstractive task.

Although attention mechanisms have achieved considerable progress in Transformer-based architectures across various Artificial Intelligence (AI) domains, their inner workings remain to be explored. Existing explainable methods have different emphases but are rather one-sided. They primarily analyse the attention mechanisms or gradient-based attribution while neglecting the magnitudes of input feature values or the skip-connection module. Moreover, they inevitably bring spurious noisy pixel attributions unrelated to the model's decision, hindering humans' trust in the spotted visualization result. Hence, we propose an easy-to-implement but effective way to remedy this flaw: Smooth Noise Norm Attention (SNNA). We weigh the attention by the norm of the transformed value vector and guide the label-specific signal with the attention gradient, then randomly sample the input perturbations and average the corresponding gradients to produce noise-free attribution. Instead of evaluating the explanation method on the binary or multi-class classification tasks like in previous works, we explore the more complex multi-label classification scenario in this work, i.e., the driving action prediction task, and trained a model for it specifically. Strip and pixels sensors, fabricated on high resistivity silicon substrate, normally of p-type, are used in detectors for High Energy Physics (HEP) typically in a hybrid detector assembly. Furthermore, and owing to their inherent advantages over hybrid sensors, Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) fabricated in CMOS technology have been increasingly implemented in HEP experiments. In all cases, their use in higher radiation areas (HL-LHC and beyond) will require options to improve their radiation hardness and time resolution. These aspects demand a deep understanding of their radiation damage and reliable models to predict their behaviours at high fluences. As a first step, we fabricated several Schottky and n-on-p diodes, to allow a comparison of results and provide a backup solution for test devices, on 6 or 4-inch p-type silicon wafers with 50 {\mu}m epitaxial thickness and of doping concentration as they are normally used in HEP detectors and CMOS MAPS devices. In this paper, details of the design and fabrication process, along with test results of the fabricated devices before irradiation, will be provided. Additional test results on irradiated devices will be provided in subsequent publications.

Wireless federated learning (WFL) enables devices to collaboratively train a global model via local model training, uploading and aggregating. However, WFL faces the data scarcity/heterogeneity problem (i.e., data are limited and unevenly distributed among devices) that degrades the learning performance. In this regard, artificial intelligence generated content (AIGC) can synthesize various types of data to compensate for the insufficient local data. Nevertheless, downloading synthetic data or uploading local models iteratively takes a lot of time, especially for a large amount of devices. To address this issue, we propose to leverage non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) to achieve efficient synthetic data and local model transmission. This paper is the first to combine AIGC and NOMA with WFL to maximally enhance the learning performance. For the proposed NOMA+AIGC-enhanced WFL, the problem of jointly optimizing the synthetic data distribution, two-way communication and computation resource allocation to minimize the global learning error is investigated. The problem belongs to NP-hard mixed integer nonlinear programming, whose optimal solution is intractable to find. We first employ the block coordinate descent method to decouple the complicated-coupled variables, and then resort to our analytical method to derive an efficient low-complexity local optimal solution with partial closed-form results. Rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) provides a flexible transmission framework that can be applied in mobile edge computing (MEC) systems. However, the research work on RSMA-assisted MEC systems is still at the infancy and many design issues remain unsolved, such as the MEC server and channel allocation problem in general multi-server and multi-channel scenarios as well as the user fairness issues. In this regard, we study an RSMA-assisted MEC system with multiple MEC servers, channels and devices, and consider the fairness among devices. A max-min fairness computation offloading problem to maximize the minimum computation offloading rate is investigated. Since the problem is difficult to solve optimally, we develop an efficient algorithm to obtain a suboptimal solution. Particularly, the time allocation and the computing frequency allocation are derived as closed-form functions of the transmit power allocation and the successive interference cancellation (SIC) decoding order, while the transmit power allocation and the SIC decoding order are jointly optimized via the alternating optimization method, the bisection search method and the successive convex approximation method. For the channel and MEC server allocation problem, we transform it into a hypergraph matching problem and solve it by matching theory. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed RSMA-assisted MEC system outperforms current MEC systems under various system setups.

Most existing works on dual-function radar-communication (DFRC) systems mainly focus on active sensing, but ignore passive sensing. To leverage multi-static sensing capability, we explore integrated active and passive sensing (IAPS) in DFRC systems to remedy sensing performance. The multi-antenna base station (BS) is responsible for communication and active sensing by transmitting signals to user equipments while detecting a target according to echo signals. In contrast, passive sensing is performed at the receive access points (RAPs). We consider both the cases where the capacity of the backhaul links between the RAPs and BS is unlimited or limited and adopt different fusion strategies. Specifically, when the backhaul capacity is unlimited, the BS and RAPs transfer sensing signals they have received to the central controller (CC) for signal fusion. The CC processes the signals and leverages the generalized likelihood ratio test detector to determine the present of a target. However, when the backhaul capacity is limited, each RAP, as well as the BS, makes decisions independently and sends its binary inference results to the CC for result fusion via voting aggregation. Then, aiming at maximize the target detection probability under communication quality of service constraints, two power optimization algorithms are proposed. Finally, numerical simulations demonstrate that the sensing performance in case of unlimited backhaul capacity is much better than that in case of limited backhaul capacity. Moreover, it implied that the proposed IAPS scheme outperforms only-passive and only-active sensing schemes, especially in unlimited capacity case.

In this work, we instantiate a novel perturbation-based multi-class explanation framework, LIPEx (Locally Interpretable Probabilistic Explanation). We demonstrate that LIPEx not only locally replicates the probability distributions output by the widely used complex classification models but also provides insight into how every feature deemed to be important affects the prediction probability for each of the possible classes. We achieve this by defining the explanation as a matrix obtained via regression with respect to the Hellinger distance in the space of probability distributions. Ablation tests on text and image data, show that LIPEx-guided removal of important features from the data causes more change in predictions for the underlying model than similar tests based on other saliency-based or feature importance-based Explainable AI (XAI) methods. It is also shown that compared to LIME, LIPEx is more data efficient in terms of using a lesser number of perturbations of the data to obtain a reliable explanation. This data-efficiency is seen to manifest as LIPEx being able to compute its explanation matrix around 53% faster than all-class LIME, for classification experiments with text data., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

Federated learning (FL) enables distributed clients to collaboratively train a machine learning model without sharing raw data with each other. However, it suffers the leakage of private information from uploading models. In addition, as the model size grows, the training latency increases due to limited transmission bandwidth and the model performance degrades while using differential privacy (DP) protection. In this paper, we propose a gradient sparsification empowered FL framework over wireless channels, in order to improve training efficiency without sacrificing convergence performance. Specifically, we first design a random sparsification algorithm to retain a fraction of the gradient elements in each client's local training, thereby mitigating the performance degradation induced by DP and and reducing the number of transmission parameters over wireless channels. Then, we analyze the convergence bound of the proposed algorithm, by modeling a non-convex FL problem. Next, we formulate a time-sequential stochastic optimization problem for minimizing the developed convergence bound, under the constraints of transmit power, the average transmitting delay, as well as the client's DP requirement. Utilizing the Lyapunov drift-plus-penalty framework, we develop an analytical solution to the optimization problem. Extensive experiments have been implemented on three real life datasets to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm. We show that our proposed algorithms can fully exploit the interworking between communication and computation to outperform the baselines, i.e., random scheduling, round robin and delay-minimization algorithms.

Amyloid proteins are associated with a broad spectrum of neurodegenerative diseases. However, it remains a grand challenge to extract molecular structure information from intracellular amyloid proteins in their native cellular environment. To address this challenge, we developed a computational chemical microscope integrating 3D mid-infrared photothermal imaging with fluorescence imaging, termed Fluorescence-guided Bond-Selective Intensity Diffraction Tomography (FBS-IDT). Based on a low-cost and simple optical design, FBS-IDT enables chemical-specific volumetric imaging and 3D site-specific mid-IR fingerprint spectroscopic analysis of tau fibrils, an important type of amyloid protein aggregates, in their intracellular environment. Label-free volumetric chemical imaging of human cells with/without seeded tau fibrils is demonstrated to show the potential correlation between lipid accumulation and tau aggregate formation. Depth-resolved mid-infrared fingerprint spectroscopy is performed to reveal the protein secondary structure of the intracellular tau fibrils. 3D visualization of the \b{eta}-sheet for tau fibril structure is achieved.

Semantic communication in the 6G era has been deemed a promising communication paradigm to break through the bottleneck of traditional communications. However, its applications for the multi-user scenario, especially the broadcasting case, remain under-explored. To effectively exploit the benefits enabled by semantic communication, in this paper, we propose a one-to-many semantic communication system. Specifically, we propose a deep neural network (DNN) enabled semantic communication system called MR\_DeepSC. By leveraging semantic features for different users, a semantic recognizer based on the pre-trained model, i.e., DistilBERT, is built to distinguish different users. Furthermore, the transfer learning is adopted to speed up the training of new receiver networks. The wake of wavy cylinder has been shown to exhibit bistability. Depending on the initial condition, the final state of the wake can either develop into a steady flow (state I), or periodic shedding (state II). In this paper, we perform direct numerical simulations to reveal the Reynolds number effects on these two wake states. With increasing Reynolds number, the steady vortical structures in state I wake sways back and forth in the spanwise direction, resulting in low-frequency fluctuations in drag forces, but not in lift. For state II, the increase in Reynolds number is associated with the emergence of another spectral peak in the lift coefficient. The secondary frequency is associated with highly three-dimensional vortical structures in the wake. For both states, the wakes transition to turblent flows at higher Reynolds numbers, with the development of small-scale vortices. We further study the streamwise gust flows over the wavy cylinder. The time-varying inflow velocity results in a wide range of instantaneous Reynolds number spanning from the absolutely unstable flow regime to the bistable regime. Depending on the period of the inflow velocity variation, the wake perturbations grown at the absolutely unstable flow regime can be damped out in state I wake, or grow large enough to trigger the transition state II, resulting in loss of flow control efficacy. The above analyses reveal novel flow physics of the bistable states at unexplored Reynolds numbers, and showcase the complex transition behavior between the two states in unsteady flows. The insights gained from this study improve the understanding of the wake dynamics of the wavy cylinder.

This paper studies the problem of constructing polytopic representations of planar regions from depth camera readings. This problem is of great importance for terrain mapping in complicated environment and has great potentials in legged locomotion applications. To address the polytopic planar region characterization problem, we propose a two-stage solution scheme. At the first stage, the planar regions embedded within a sequence of depth images are extracted individually first and then merged to establish a terrain map containing only planar regions in a selected frame. To simplify the representations of the planar regions that are applicable to foothold planning for legged robots, we further approximate the extracted planar regions via low-dimensional polytopes at the second stage. With the polytopic representation, the proposed approach achieves a great balance between accuracy and simplicity. Experimental validations with RGB-D cameras are conducted to demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme. The proposed scheme successfully characterizes the planar regions via polytopes with acceptable accuracy. More importantly, the run time of the overall perception scheme is less than 10ms (i.e., > 100Hz) throughout the tests, which strongly illustrates the advantages of our approach developed in this paper.

Recovering molecular information remains a grand challenge in the widely used holographic and computational imaging technologies. To address this challenge, we developed a computational mid-infrared photothermal microscope, termed Bond-selective Intensity Diffraction Tomography (BS-IDT). Based on a low-cost brightfield microscope with an add-on pulsed light source, BS-IDT recovers both infrared spectra and bond-selective 3D refractive index maps from intensity-only measurements. High-fidelity infrared fingerprint spectra extraction is validated. Volumetric chemical imaging of biological cells is demonstrated at a speed of ~20 seconds per volume, with a lateral and axial resolution of ~350 nm and ~1.1 micron, respectively. BS-IDT's application potential is investigated by chemically quantifying lipids stored in cancer cells and volumetric chemical imaging on Caenorhabditis elegans with a large field of view (~100 micron X 100 micron).

Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) has recently emerged as a promising technology in the 5G era. It is deemed an effective paradigm to support computation-intensive and delay critical applications even at energy-constrained and computation-limited Internet of Things (IoT) devices. To effectively exploit the performance benefits enabled by MEC, it is imperative to jointly allocate radio and computational resources by considering non-stationary computation demands, user mobility, and wireless fading channels. This paper aims to study the tradeoff between energy efficiency (EE) and service delay for multi-user multi-server MEC-enabled IoT systems when provisioning offloading services in a user mobility scenario. Particularly, we formulate a stochastic optimization problem with the objective of minimizing the long-term average network EE with the constraints of the task queue stability, peak transmit power, maximum CPU-cycle frequency, and maximum user number. To tackle the problem, we propose an online offloading and resource allocation algorithm by transforming the original problem into several individual subproblems in each time slot based on Lyapunov optimization theory, which are then solved by convex decomposition and submodular methods. Theoretical analysis proves that the proposed algorithm can achieve a $[O(1/V), O(V)]$ tradeoff between EE and service delay. Simulation results verify the theoretical analysis and demonstrate our proposed algorithm can offer much better EE-delay performance in task offloading challenges, compared to several baselines.

Direct numerical simulations (DNSs) of turbulent pipe flow subjected to streamwise-varying wall rotation are performed. This control method is able to achieve drag reduction and even relaminarize the flow under certain control parameters at low Reynolds number. Two control parameters, which are velocity amplitude and wavelength, are considered. An annular boundary layer, called Spatial Stokes Layer (SSL), is formed by the wall rotation. Based on the thickness of SSL, two types of drag reduction scenarios are identified. When the thickness is low, the SSL acts as a spacer layer, obstructing the impact of fluids against the wall and hence reducing the shear stress. The flow structures in the outer layer are less affected and are stretched in streamwise direction due to the increased velocity gradient. Within the SSL, the turbulence intensity diminishes dramatically. When the thickness is large, a streamwise wavy pattern of near-wall low-speed streaks is formed. The orientation of streaks is found to lag behind the direction of local mean velocity in phase and conform to the direction of local resultant shear stress. The streamwise scale of near-wall flow structures is significantly reduced, resulting in the disruption of downstream development of flow structures and hence leading to the drag reduction. Besides, it is found that it requires both large enough thickness of SSL and velocity amplitude to relaminarize the turbulence. The relaminarization mechanism is that the annular SSL can continuously absorb energy from wall-normal stress due to the rotation effect, thereby the turbulence self-sustaining process could not be maintained. For the relaminarization cases, the laminar state is stable to even extremely large perturbations, which possibly makes laminar state the only fixed point for the whole system.

We present an open-source untethered quadrupedal soft robot platform for dynamic locomotion (e.g., high-speed running and backflipping). The robot is mostly soft (80 vol.%) while driven by four geared servo motors. The robot's soft body and soft legs were 3D printed with gyroid infill using a flexible material, enabling it to conform to the environment and passively stabilize during locomotion on multi-terrain environments. In addition, we simulated the robot in a real-time soft body simulation. With tuned gaits in simulation, the real robot can locomote at a speed of 0.9 m/s (2.5 body length/second), substantially faster than most untethered legged soft robots published to date. For the Phase-II Upgrade of the ATLAS Detector, its Inner Detector, consisting of silicon pixel, silicon strip and transition radiation sub-detectors, will be replaced with an all new 100 % silicon tracker, composed of a pixel tracker at inner radii and a strip tracker at outer radii. The future ATLAS strip tracker will include 11,000 silicon sensor modules in the central region (barrel) and 7,000 modules in the forward region (end-caps), which are foreseen to be constructed over a period of 3.5 years. The construction of each module consists of a series of assembly and quality control steps, which were engineered to be identical for all production sites. In order to develop the tooling and procedures for assembly and testing of these modules, two series of major prototyping programs were conducted: an early program using readout chips designed using a 250 nm fabrication process (ABCN-25) and a subsequent program using a follow-up chip set made using 130 nm processing (ABC130 and HCC130 chips). This second generation of readout chips was used for an extensive prototyping program that produced around 100 barrel-type modules and contributed significantly to the development of the final module layout. By exploiting the computing power and local data of distributed clients, federated learning (FL) features ubiquitous properties such as reduction of communication overhead and preserving data privacy. In each communication round of FL, the clients update local models based on their own data and upload their local updates via wireless channels. However, latency caused by hundreds to thousands of communication rounds remains a bottleneck in FL. To minimize the training latency, this work provides a multi-armed bandit-based framework for online client scheduling (CS) in FL without knowing wireless channel state information and statistical characteristics of clients. Firstly, we propose a CS algorithm based on the upper confidence bound policy (CS-UCB) for ideal scenarios where local datasets of clients are independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) and balanced. An upper bound of the expected performance regret of the proposed CS-UCB algorithm is provided, which indicates that the regret grows logarithmically over communication rounds. Then, to address non-ideal scenarios with non-i.i.d. and unbalanced properties of local datasets and varying availability of clients, we further propose a CS algorithm based on the UCB policy and virtual queue technique (CS-UCB-Q). An upper bound is also derived, which shows that the expected performance regret of the proposed CS-UCB-Q algorithm can have a sub-linear growth over communication rounds under certain conditions. Besides, the convergence performance of FL training is also analyzed. Finally, simulation results validate the efficiency of the proposed algorithms.

Spectral imaging paves way for various fields and particular in biomedical research. However, spectral imaging mainly depending on spatial or temporal scanning, cannot achieve high temporal, spatial and spectral resolution simultaneously. In this study, we demonstrated a silicon real-time ultra-spectral imaging chip based on reconfigurable metasurfaces, comprising of 155,216 (356$\times$436) image-adaptive micro-spectrometers with ultra-high center-wavelength accuracy of 0.04 nm and spectral resolution of 0.8 nm. It is employed for imaging brain hemodynamics, and the dynamic spectral absorption properties of deoxyhemoglobin and oxyhemoglobin in a rat barrel cortex were obtained, which enlighten the spectroscopy in vivo studies and other real-time applications.

Beamforming is evidently a core technology in recent generations of mobile communication networks. Nevertheless, an iterative process is typically required to optimize the parameters, making it ill-placed for real-time implementation due to high complexity and computational delay. Heuristic solutions such as zero-forcing (ZF) are simpler but at the expense of performance loss. Alternatively, deep learning (DL) is well understood to be a generalizing technique that can deliver promising results for a wide range of applications at much lower complexity if it is sufficiently trained. As a consequence, DL may present itself as an attractive solution to beamforming. To exploit DL, this article introduces general data- and model-driven beamforming neural networks (BNNs), presents various possible learning strategies, and also discusses complexity reduction for the DL-based BNNs. We also offer enhancement methods such as training-set augmentation and transfer learning in order to improve the generality of BNNs, accompanied by computer simulation results and testbed results showing the performance of such BNN solutions.
