Lunar And Planetary Science And Exploration - Abstract
Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover observations of the 2018/Mars year 34 global/planet-encircling dust storm represent the first in situ measurements of a global dust storm with dedicated meteorological sensors since the Viking Landers. The Mars Science Laboratory team planned and executed a science campaign lasting approximately 100 Martian sols to study the storm involving an enhanced cadence of environmental monitoring using the rover's meteorological sensors, cameras, and spectrometers. Mast Camera 880-nanometer optical depth reached 8.5, and Rover Environmental Monitoring Station measurements indicated a 97 percent reduction in incident total ultraviolet solar radiation at the surface, 30 degrees Kelvin reduction in diurnal range of air temperature, and an increase in the semidiurnal pressure tide amplitude to 40 pascals. No active dust-lifting sites were detected within Gale Crater, and global and local atmospheric dynamics were drastically altered during the storm. This work presents an overview of the mission's storm observations and initial results.

Instrumentation And Photography - Abstract
The ISS-RAD instrument has been fabricated by Southwest Research Institute and delivered to NASA for flight to the ISS in late 2015 or early 2016. ISS-RAD is essentially two instruments that share a common interface to ISS. The two instruments are the Charged Particle Detector (CPD), which is very similar to the MSL-RAD detector on Mars, and the Fast Neutron Detector (FND), which is a boron-loaded plastic scintillator with readout optimized for the 0.5 to 10 MeV energy range. As the FND is completely new, it has been necessary to develop methodology to allow it to be used to measure the neutron dose and dose equivalent. This talk will focus on the methods developed and their implementation using calibration data obtained in quasi-monoenergetic (QMN) neutron fields at the PTB facility in Braunschweig, Germany. The QMN data allow us to determine an approximate response function, from which we estimate dose and dose equivalent contributions per detected neutron as a function of the pulse height. We refer to these as the "pSv per count" curves for dose equivalent and the "pGy per count" curves for dose. The FND is required to provide a dose equivalent measurement with an accuracy of 10% of the known value in a calibrated AmBe field. Four variants of the analysis method were developed, corresponding to two different approximations of the pSv per count curve, and two different implementations, one for real-time analysis onboard ISS and one for ground analysis. We will show that the preferred method, when applied in either real-time or ground analysis, yields good accuracy for the AmBe field. We find that the real-time algorithm is more susceptible to chance-coincidence background than is the algorithm used in ground analysis, so that the best estimates will come from the latter.

coronal mass ejections, forbush decreases - Abstract
Forbush decreases (FDs), short-term drops in the flux of galactic cosmic rays (GCR), can be caused by the shielding from strong and/or turbulent magnetic structures in the solar wind, i.e. interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) and their associated shocks as well as corotating interaction regions (CIRs). FDs are often used as a proxy for detecting the arrival of ICMEs or CIRs at locations where sufficient in situ solar wind measurements are not or not always available, such as at Mars. The Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) onboard the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission's Curiosity rover has been continuously measuring the GCR environment on the surface of Mars for more than 7 years since its landing in August 2012 and is thus an excellent source for measurements of FDs at Mars (see e.g. Guo et al. 2018, A&A). Based on the large catalog of FDs at Mars compiled by Papaioannou et al. (2019, Solar Physics) as well as results from our previous work (Freiherr von Forstner et al., 2019, Space Weather), we study the parameters of FDs at Mars and their relations, focusing on events produced by ICMEs. We then compare these data with catalogs of terrestrial FDs, investigating whether and to what extent the differences of certain FD characteristics between the two planets, at two different heliospheric distances, are related to the evolution of ICMEs between Earth and Mars. Our results show that there is a linear correlation between the FD amplitude (drop percentage) and the maximum hourly GCR decrease during the FD, which was already found at Earth by previous authors (Belov et al., 2008, Abunin et al., 2012). However, this correlation has a different proprtionality factor at Mars than at Earth, especially for ICME-induced events. As we do not find a clear dependence of this relationship on the observed GCR energy range, we suggest that this difference is probably caused by the expansion of the ICME sheath region as it propagates outward from 1 AU to ∼1.5 AU. The expansion factor derived from our analysis is in line with expansion factors of ICME sheaths within the inner heliosphere observed by

Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) ,Strahlenbiologie ,MSL Radiation ,Astrophysics::Earth and Planetary Astrophysics - Abstract
The Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity, operating on the surface of Mars, is exposed to radiation fluxes from above and below. Galactic Cosmic Rays travel through the Martian atmosphere, producing a modified spectrum consisting of both primary and secondary particles at ground level. These particles produce an upward directed secondary particle spectrum as they interact with the Martian soil. Here we develop a method to distinguish the upward and downward directed particle fluxes in the Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) instrument, verify it using data taken during the cruise to Mars, and apply it to data taken on the Martian surface. We use a combination of Geant4 and Planetocosmics modeling to find discrimination criteria for the flux directions. After developing models of the cruise phase and surface shielding conditions, we compare model-predicted values for the ratio of upward to downward flux with those found in RAD observation data. Given the quality of available information on Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft and rover composition, we find generally reasonable agreement between our models and RAD observation data. This demonstrates the feasibility of the method developed and tested here. We additionally note that the method can also be used to extend the measurement range and capabilities of the RAD instrument to higher energies.

coronal mass ejections, solar energetic particles, space weather - Abstract
On 2017 September 10th, the active region (AR) 2673 produced solar energetic particles (SEPs) which resulted in the first ground level enhancement (GLE) observed at the surface of two different planets: Earth and Mars. This was the biggest GLE on the surface of Mars, ̃ 160 ◦ longitudinally east of Earth, as observed by the Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) since the landing of the Curiosity rover in August 2012. Both Earth and Mars saw a significant enhancement of the accelerated protons with energies larger than hundreds of MeV whereas STEREO-A, despite being at the back-side of the event, detected gradually increasing fluxes of particles transported there across the heliospheric magnetic fields. Such high energetic particles were mainly accelerated by the flare and shock clearly identified on the solar west limb in SDO/AIA and GOES/SUVI images. Based on STEREO-A and SOHO chronograph images and the Graduated Cylindrical Shell (GCS) model, we identify the initial 3D kinematics of an extremely fast (>2500 km/s) Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) and its shock front, as well as another two CMEs launched hours earlier with moderate speeds. The three CMEs interacted as they propagated outwards into the heliosphere and merged into a complex interplanetary CME (ICME). The arrival of the shock and ICME at Mars caused the biggest Forbush Decrease (FD) ever seen by RAD and the arrival time is only a few hours later than that at Earth, which was about 0.5 AU closer to the Sun. We investigate the interplanetary propagation of the three CMEs and the merged ICME together with the shock, using the Drag Based Model(DBM) and the WSA-ENLIL plus cone model constrained by the in-situ observations. The synergistic study of the ICME and SEP arrivals at Earth, Mars and STEREO-A suggests that to better predict potentially hazardous space weather impacts at Earth and other heliospheric locations for human exploration missions, it is essential to analyze 1) the CME kinematics, especially during their interactions, 2) the spatially and temporally varying heliospheric conditions, such as the evolution and propagation of the stream interaction regions and finally 3) the influence of such heliospheric structures on the transport and properties of SEPs in the interplanetary space.
