Abstract The relationship between possible sarcopenia and mortality remains ambiguous within Asian populations. To clarify this, we investigated the association in older adults residing in Chinese communities. Utilizing data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, this population-based cohort study included individuals aged ≥ 60 years, followed from 2011 to 2012 through 2020. Possible sarcopenia was defined in accordance with the Asian Working Group on Sarcopenia 2019 criteria, and Cox proportional hazards regression was used to analyze its impact on mortality, while exploratory analyses were conducted to investigate the associations of possible sarcopenia with chronic diseases, functional independence, and hospitalization frequency. The study encompassed 5,160 participants (median age: 66 years), nearly half of whom (48.8%) were identified with possible sarcopenia. Over a 9-year follow-up period, there were 1216 recorded deaths. Abstract Two-dimensional nanofluidics based on naturally abundant clay are good candidates for harvesting osmotic energy between the sea and river from the perspective of commercialization and environmental sustainability. However, clay-based nanofluidics outputting long-term considerable osmotic power remains extremely challenging to achieve due to the lack of surface charge and mechanical strength. Here, a two-dimensional all-natural nanofluidic (2D-NNF) is developed as a robust and highly efficient osmotic energy generator based on an interlocking configuration of stacked montmorillonite nanosheets (from natural clay) and their intercalated cellulose nanofibers (from natural wood). The generated nano-confined interlamellar channels with abundant surface and space negative charges facilitate selective and fast hopping transport of cations in the 2D-NNF. This contributes to an osmotic power output of ~8.61 W m−2 by mixing artificial seawater and river water, higher than other reported state-of-the-art 2D nanofluidics. According to detailed life cycle assessments (LCA), the 2D-NNF demonstrates great advantages in resource consumption (1/14), greenhouse gas emissions (1/9), and production costs (1/13) compared with the mainstream 2D nanofluidics, promising good sustainability for large-scale and highly-efficient osmotic power generation.

Abstract Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are a group of chemicals widely used in various applications to prevent or slow down the spread of fire. However, they have adverse effects on human health. There is a relative scarcity of population-based studies regarding BFRs, particularly their impact on the respiratory system. This study aimed to investigate the influence of BFRs on pulmonary function using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The study found that elevated serum concentrations of certain BFRs were associated with pulmonary ventilatory dysfunction. Adjusted analyses revealed positive correlations between PBDE47, PBDE183, and PBDE209 concentrations and ventilatory dysfunction. The analysis of mixed BFRs showed a positive relationship with pulmonary ventilation dysfunction, with PBDE47 making the most significant contribution. Our study demonstrates that both individual and combined BFRs exposure can lead to impaired pulmonary ventilation function. These findings provide evidence of the adverse effects of BFRs on lung function, emphasizing the importance of further investigating the potential health consequences of these compounds. Further large-scale longitudinal studies are needed to investigate this relationship in the future.

Abstract Background The mortality rate of sepsis-associated liver injury (SALI) is relatively high, but there is currently no authoritative prognostic criterion for the outcome of SALI. Meanwhile, lactate-to-albumin ratio (LAR) has been confirmed to be associated with mortality rates in conditions such as sepsis, heart failure, and respiratory failure. However, there is a scarcity of research reporting on the association between LAR and SALI. This study aimed to elucidate the association between LAR and the 28-day mortality rate of SALI. Methods In this retrospective cohort study, data were obtained from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV (v2.2). Adult patients with SALI were admitted to the intensive care unit in this study. The LAR level at admission was included, and the primary aim was to assess the relationship between the LAR and 28-day all-cause mortality. Results A total of 341 patients with SALI (SALI) were screened. They were divided into a survival group (241) and a non-survival group (100), and the 28-day mortality rate was 29.3%. Multivariable Cox regression analysis revealed that for every 1-unit increase in LAR, the 28-day mortality risk for SALI patients increased by 21%, with an HR of 1.21 (95% CI 1.11 ~ 1.31, p

Protein is an important component of beer, and its type, content and molecular weight directly affect the quality of beer, especially the foam quality of beer. Different brands of wheat beer and barley beer available in the market were used for this analysis. The differences in protein composition and foam performance between multi-sample barley and wheat beer were analyzed using sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and high-pressure size exclusion chromatography. Protein significantly influences beer quality, particularly its foam properties. Wheat beer (WB) has 9.52–84.10% more total protein content than barley beer (BB). The primary proteins in both beers are 6.9–20.1 kDa, with WB having 1.04 g/L more of this protein, 60.11% higher than that of BB. It is one of the main different proteins between WB and BB. WB also contains 66.67% more 20.1–32.4 kDa protein compared to BB. This is one of the main differences between WB and BB proteins. Both 6.9–20.1 kDa and 20.1–32.4 kDa proteins enhance beer viscosity and foam properties. Additionally, WB’s > 32.4 kDa protein content is 246.67% higher than BB’s, significantly improving beer hydrophobicity and foam performance. These protein differences are key factors in the superior foam quality of WB.

Abstract Background A prospective study of multiple small samples found that idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is often accompanied by a deficiency in Vitamin D levels. However, the causal relationship between the two remains to be determined. Therefore, our study aims to investigate the causal effect of serum 1,25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) on the risk of IPF through a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Methods Through data analysis from two European ancestry-based genome-wide association studies (GWAS), including 401,460 individuals for 25(OH)D levels and 1028 individuals for IPF, we primarily employed inverse-variance weighted (IVW) to assess the causal effect of 25(OH)D levels on IPF risk. MR-Egger regression test was used to determine pleiotropy, and Cochran’s Q test was conducted for heterogeneity testing. Leave-one-out analysis was conducted to examine the robustness of the results. Results 158 SNPs related to serum 25(OH)D were used as instrumental variables (IVs). The MR analyses revealed no evidence supporting a causal association between the level of circulating 25(OH)D and the risk of IPF. The IVW method [OR 0.891, 95%CI (0.523–1.518), P = 0.670]; There was no significant level of heterogeneity, pleiotropy and bias in IVs. Cochran’s Q test for heterogeneity (MR Egger P = 0.081; IVW P = 0.089); MR-Egger regression for pleiotropy (P = 0.774). Conclusions This MR Study suggests that genetically predicted circulating vitamin D concentrations in the general population are not causally related to IPF.

Abstract The crack fault is one of the most common faults in the rotor system, and researchers have paid close attention to its fault diagnosis. However, most studies focus on discussing the dynamic response characteristics caused by the crack rather than estimating the crack depth and position based on the obtained vibration signals. In this paper, a novel crack fault diagnosis and location method for a dual-disk hollow shaft rotor system based on the Radial basis function (RBF) network and Pattern recognition neural network (PRNN) is presented. Firstly, a rotor system model with a breathing crack suitable for a short-thick hollow shaft rotor is established based on the finite element method, where the crack’s periodic opening and closing pattern and different degrees of crack depth are considered. Then, the dynamic response is obtained by the harmonic balance method. By adjusting the crack parameters, the dynamic characteristics related to the crack depth and position are analyzed through the amplitude-frequency responses and waterfall plots. The analysis results show that the first critical speed, first subcritical speed, first critical speed amplitude, and super-harmonic resonance peak at the first subcritical speed can be utilized for the crack fault diagnosis. Based on this, the RBF network and PRNN are adopted to determine the depth and approximate location of the crack respectively by taking the above dynamic characteristics as input. Test results show that the proposed method has high fault diagnosis accuracy. This research proposes a crack detection method adequate for the hollow shaft rotor system, where the crack depth and position are both unknown.

Decabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-209), a persistent organic pollutant, is linked to a great number of health problems, the most severe of which impact the liver due to its role in the elimination and degradation of exogenous harmful substances. Though the hepatotoxicity of BDE-209 has been observed, its underlying mechanism is yet unknown. The purpose of this study is to thoroughly investigate the hepatotoxicity of BDE-209 and its molecular processes in broilers by subjecting 120 male broilers to varied concentrations of BDE-209 for 42 days. We observed that the bioaccumulation of BDE-209 in the liver in a dose-dependent manner, and that BDE-209 exposure can raise the concentrations of ALT, AST, and GGT, accompanied by hepatocyte fatty degeneration and inflammatory foci. In the hepatic homogenates, oxidative stress was evidenced by elevated levels of MDA and ROS and decreased activies of SOD and CAT. Additionally, pro-inflammatory cytokines including IL-1, IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-8 levels were increased, whereas anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-4 level was declined. Furthermore, RNA sequencing revealed that genes involved in inflammation were considerably dysregulated, and real-time PCR verified the expressed alterations of numerous genes related to the MAPK and WNT signaling pathways. The protein concentrations of NF-κB, β-catenin, and WNT5A, and the phosphorylation levels of JNK and ERK were all dramatically enhanced. The current study indicates that BDE-209 exposure can cause hepatotoxicity in broilers via bioaccumulation and oxidative stress, which then activates the MAPK and WNT signaling pathways, subsequently generating inflammation and hepatic injury.

Objective Spent ginger is a byproduct of juice extraction from the rhizome of ginger (Zingiber officinale). Despite its nutritional value, it is difficult to preserve or further process and thus is often wasted. This study uses spent ginger as a substrate for fermentation and cultivates spent ginger yeast cultures (SGYCs) that are then added to the feed of laying hens. The effects of SGYCs on production performance, egg quality, serum composition, and intestinal microbiota of laying hens were investigated. Methods Eighty 60-week-old Hy-Line Brown hens were separated into 5 experimental groups with 4 replicates per group (4 hens per cage, 4 cages per replicate). The control group was fed a basal diet while experimental groups were also given SGYCs at the levels of 5, 10, 20, and 40 g/kg for 6 weeks. This study investigated the hydrolysis effect of the endopeptidase from wheat malt on the soybean meal proteins. The results indicated that the endopeptidase broke the peptide bonds of soybean meal proteins and converted the alcohol- and alkali-soluble proteins into water-soluble and salt-soluble proteins. In addition, wheat malt endopeptidase did not break the disulfide bonds between proteins but affected the conformation of disulfide bonds between substrate protein molecules, which were changed from the gauche-gauche-trans (g-g-t) vibrational mode to the trans-gauche-trans (t-g-t) vibrational mode. Wheat malt endopeptidase exhibited the highest enzymatic activity at 2 h of enzymatic digestion, demonstrating the fastest hydrolytic rate of soybean meal proteins. Compared with the samples before enzymatic hydrolysis, the total alcohol- and alkali-soluble proteins were decreased by 11.89% but the water- and salt-soluble proteins were increased by 11.99%, indicating the hydrolytic effect of endopeptidase. The corresponding water-soluble proteins had molecular weights of 66.4–97.2, 29–44.3, and 20.1 kDa, while the salt-soluble proteins had molecular weights of 44.3–66.4, 29–44.3, and 20.1 kDa, respectively. The degree of enzymatic hydrolysis of soybean meal reached the maximum at 8 h. ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to retrospectively explore the relationship between serum sodium and in-hospital mortality and related factors in critically ill patients with spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).MethodsData were collected from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV database. Restricted cubic splines were used to explore the relationship between serum sodium and in-hospital mortality. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to calculate the optimal cutoff value of sodium fluctuation, and decision curve analysis was plotted to show the net benefit of different models containing serum sodium.ResultsA total of 295 patients with spontaneous SAH were included in the retrospective analysis. The level of sodium on ICU admission and minimum sodium in the ICU had a statistically significant non-linear relationship with in-hospital mortality (non-linear P-value < 0.05, total P-value < 0.001). Serum sodium on ICU admission, minimum serum sodium during ICU, and sodium fluctuation were independently associated with in-hospital mortality with odds ratios being 1.23 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.04–1.45, P = 0.013), 1.35 (95% CI: 1.18-1.55, P < 0.001), and 1.07 (95% CI: 1.00–1.14, P = 0.047), respectively. The optimal cutoff point was 8.5 mmol/L to identify in-hospital death of patients with spontaneous SAH with sodium fluctuation, with an AUC of 0.659 (95% CI 0.573-0.744).ConclusionAmong patients with spontaneous SAH, we found a J-shaped association between serum sodium on ICU admission and minimum sodium values during ICU with in-hospital mortality. Sodium fluctuation above 8.5 mmol/L was independently associated with in-hospital mortality. These results require being tested in prospective trials.

Abstract Lithium (Li) metal is a promising anode for high-performance secondary lithium batteries with high energy density due to its highest theoretical specific capacity and lowest electrochemical potential among anode materials. However, the dendritic growth and detrimental reactions with electrolyte during Li plating raise safety concerns and lead to premature failure. Herein, we report that a homogeneous nanocomposite protective layer, prepared by uniformly dispersing AlPO4 nanoparticles into the vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene matrix, can effectively prevent dendrite growth and lead to superior cycling performance due to synergistic influence of homogeneous Li plating and electronic insulation of polymeric layer. The results reveal that the protected Li anode is able to sustain repeated Li plating/stripping for > 750 cycles under a high current density of 3 mA cm−2 and a renders a practical specific capacity of 2 mAh cm−2. Moreover, full-cell Li-ion battery is constructed by using LiFePO4 and protected Li as a cathode and anode, respectively, rendering a stable capacity after 400 charge/discharge cycles. The current work presents a promising approach to stabilize Li metal anodes for next-generation Li secondary batteries.

Abstract Catalytically active metals atomically dispersed on supports presents the ultimate atom utilization efficiency and cost‐effective pathway for electrocatalyst design. Optimizing the coordination nature of metal atoms represents the advanced strategy for enhancing the catalytic activity and the selectivity of single‐atom catalysts (SACs). Here, we designed a transition‐metal based sulfide‐Ni3S2 with abundant exposed Ni vacancies created by the interaction between chloride ions and the functional groups on the surface of Ni3S2 for the anchoring of atomically dispersed Pt (PtSA‐Ni3S2). The theoretical calculation reveals that unique Pt‐Ni3S2 support interaction increases the d orbital electron occupation at the Fermi level and leads to a shift‐down of the d ‐band center, which energetically enhances H2O adsorption and provides the optimum H binding sites. Introducing Pt into Ni position in Ni3S2 system can efficiently enhance electronic field distribution and construct a metallic‐state feature on the Pt sites by the orbital hybridization between S‐3p and Pt‐5d for improved reaction kinetics. Finally, the fabricated PtSA‐Ni3S2 SAC is supported by Ag nanowires network to construct a seamless conductive three‐dimensional (3D) nanostructure (PtSA‐Ni3S2@Ag NWs), and the developed catalyst shows an extremely great mass activity of 7.6 A mg−1 with 27‐time higher than the commercial Pt/C HER catalyst.

Abstract Background Increasing studies indicated that circRNAs play critical roles in tumor progression. However, the roles and underlying mechanisms of circRNAs in gastric cancer (GC) remain largely unclear. Methods Microarray assay was used to screen the abnormally expressed circRNAs in GC. Cell viability assay, transwell assay and in vivo assay were performed to assess the effects of hsa_circ_0081143 on GC cells. Next, interaction between hsa_circ_0081143 and miR-646 was detected by luciferase reporter assay and RNA pull-down assay. Results High throughput microarray assay showed that hsa_circ_0081143 was upregulated in GC tissues, which was further confirmed by qRT-PCR. Correlation analysis showed that high hsa_circ_0081143 expression was associated with the advanced TNM stage, lymphnode metastases, and poor overall survival of GC patients. Hsa_circ_0081143 inhibition decreased GC cells viability, invasion ability and induced the sensitivity of GC cells to cisplatin (DDP) in vitro. Mechanistically, we showed that hsa_circ_0081143 could act as an endogenous sponge by directly binding to miR-646 and downregulation of miR-646 efficiently reversed the inhibition of CDK6 induced by hsa_circ_008114 knockdown. Additionally, hsa_circ_0081143 silencing suppressed the tumorigenesis and remarkably enhance DDP inhibitory effects of GC cells in vivo. Conclusions Our study indicated a novel regulatory loop that hsa_circ_0081143/miR-646/CDK6 axis in GC progression. These data suggested that hsa_circ_0081143 might act as a potential novel therapeutic strategy for GC treatment.

The flame retardant decabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-209) is a widely used chemical in a variety of products and exists extensively in the environment. BDE-209 has been reported to induce kidney injury and dysfunction. However, the causes and mechanisms of its nephrotoxicity are still under investigation. In this study, 150 male broilers were exposed to BDE-209 concentrations of 0, 0.004, 0.04, 0.4, 4.0 g/kg for 42 days. The relative kidney weight, histopathology, markers of renal injury, oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis and the expression of MAPK signaling pathways-related proteins were assessed. The results showed that the concentrations of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine (CRE) and the neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), significantly increased after exposure to BDE-209 with the doses more than 0.04 g/kg. Similarly, severe damage of renal morphology was observed, including atrophy and necrosis of glomeruli, and swelling and granular degeneration of the renal tubular epithelium. In the renal homogenates, the oxidative stress was evidenced by the elevated concentrations of MDA and NO, and decreased levels of GSH-Px, GSH and SOD. Due to the inflammatory response, the level of NF-κB and the pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-18 were remarkably upregulated, while the content of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 decreased. Additionally, the apoptotic analysis showed notable upregulations of Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, the relative expression of p-ERK1/2 and p-JNK1/2, and the expression of Bax, cytochrome c and caspase 3. The present study indicates that BDE-209 exposure can cause nephrotoxicity in broilers through oxidative stress and inflammation, which activate the phosphorylation of key proteins of the MAPK signaling pathways, and subsequently induce mitochondria-mediated kidney apoptosis.

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have been considered as one of the most promising electrode materials for electrochemical capacitors due to their large specific surface area and abundant pore structure. Herein, we report a Co-MOF electrode with a vertical-standing 2D parallelogram-like nanoarray structure on a Ni foam substrate via a one-step solvothermal method. The as-prepared Co-MOF on a Ni foam electrode delivered a high area-specific capacitance of 582.0 mC cm−2 at a current density of 2 mA cm−2 and a good performance rate of 350.0 mC cm−2 at 50 mA cm−2. Moreover, an asymmetric electrochemical capacitor (AEC) device (Co-MOF on Ni foam//AC) was assembled by using the as-prepared Co-MOF on a Ni foam as the cathode and a active carbon-coated Ni foam as the anode to achieve a maximum energy density of 0.082 mW cm−2 at a power density of 0.8 mW cm−2, which still maintained 0.065 mW cm−2 at a high power density of 11.94 mW cm−2. Meanwhile, our assembled device exhibited an excellent cycling stability with a capacitance retention of nearly 100% after 1000 cycles. Therefore, this work provides a simple method to prepare MOF-based material for the application of energy storage and conversion.

In this study, an endo-1,4-β-xylanase was purified from wheat malt following the procedures of ammonium sulfate precipitation, cation-exchange chromatography, and two-step anion-exchange chromatography. The purified endo-1,4-β-xylanase had a specific activity of 3.94 u/mg, demonstrating a weight average molecular weight (Mw) of approximately 58,000 Da. After LC–MS/MS (Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry) identification, the purified enzyme had the highest matching degree with a GH10 (Glycoside Hydrolase 10) domain-containing protein from wheat, there were 23 match peptides with a score above the threshold and the prot-cover was 45.5%. The resulting purified enzyme was used to investigate its degradation ability on high viscosity wheat-derived water-extractable arabinoxylan (WEAX). Degradation experiments confirmed that the purified enzyme was a true endo-acting enzyme, which could degrade large WEAX into smaller WEAX. The average degree of polymerization (avDP) and the viscosity of WEAX decreased with the increasing reaction time. The enzyme could degrade a small amount of WEAX into arabinoxylan-oligosaccharides (AXOS) with a degree of polymerization of 2–6, but no monosaccharide was produced. The degradation occurred rapidly in the first 3.5 h and decreased with the further prolongation of reaction time.

Li-rich cathode material Li[Li0.1Ni0.35Mn0.55]O2 was synthesized by a sol-gel method. The morphology and a-NaFeO2 type structure of the material at ambient conditions were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The high-pressure behavior of the material was studied at pressure up to 19.7 GPa by using angle dispersive synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (ADXD). The studies affirmed that the a-NaFeO2 type structure existed up to at least 19.7 GPa. Rietveld refinement analysis indicated that the c/a lattice parameter ratio decreased and the Li-O bond length shrunk with the increasing pressure, however, the Li+/Ni2+ ions exchange increased under elevated pressure. The pressure-volume data of the material were fitted to the third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state and bulk modulus obtained upon compression from the fitting was 117 (1) GPa.
