3. Efficient machine-learning model for fast assessment of elastic properties of high-entropy alloys

Abstract

We combined descriptor-based analytical models for stiffness-matrix and elastic-moduli with mean-field methods to accelerate assessment of technologically useful properties of high-entropy alloys, such as strength and ductility. Model training for elastic properties uses Sure-Independence Screening (SIS) and Sparsifying Operator (SO) method yielding an optimal analytical model, constructed with meaningful atomic features to predict target properties. Computationally inexpensive analytical descriptors were trained using a database of the elastic properties determined from density functional theory for binary and ternary subsets of Nb-Mo-Ta-W-V refractory alloys. The optimal Elastic-SISSO models, extracted from an exponentially large feature space, give an extremely accurate prediction of target properties, similar to or better than other models, with some verified from existing experiments. We also show that electronegativity variance and elastic-moduli can directly predict trends in ductility and yield strength of refractory HEAs, and reveals promising alloy concentration regions., Comment: 17 Pages; 10 Figures; 3 Tables

5. Landslide Susceptibility Modeling by Interpretable Neural Network

Abstract

Landslides are notoriously difficult to predict because numerous spatially and temporally varying factors contribute to slope stability. Artificial neural networks (ANN) have been shown to improve prediction accuracy but are largely uninterpretable. Here we introduce an additive ANN optimization framework to assess landslide susceptibility, as well as dataset division and outcome interpretation techniques. We refer to our approach, which features full interpretability, high accuracy, high generalizability and low model complexity, as superposable neural network (SNN) optimization. We validate our approach by training models on landslide inventory from three different easternmost Himalaya regions. Our SNN outperformed physically-based and statistical models and achieved similar performance to state-of-the-art deep neural networks. The SNN models found the product of slope and precipitation and hillslope aspect to be important primary contributors to high landslide susceptibility, which highlights the importance of strong slope-climate couplings, along with microclimates, on landslide occurrences., Comment: 79 pages (including SI section); 8 main figures; 12 supplementary figures; 9 supplementary tables

Abstract

Digital Photo images are everywhere around us in journals, on walls, and over the Internet. However we have to be conscious that seeing does not always imply reality. Photo images become a rich subject of manipulations due to the advanced digital cameras as well as photo editing software. Accordingly, image forgery is becoming much easier using the existing tools in terms of time and accuracy, and thus the forensics of detecting an image forgery case is becoming difficult and needs more and more time and techniques to prove the image originality especially as crime evidences and court related cases. In this paper, a framework with associated algorithms and methodologies is proposed to ensure the authenticity of the image and the integrity of the content in addition to protecting the photo image against forgery suspects. The framework depends on developing new generation of certified digital cameras that could produce authenticated and forgery-proof photos. The proposed methodology generates an irreversible hash integrity code from the image content based on color matrix calculations and steganography algorithms. Abstract

With the increasing widely spread digital media become using in most fields such as medical care, Oceanography, Exploration processing, security purpose, military fields and astronomy, evidence in criminals and more vital fields and then digital Images become have different appreciation values according to what is important of carried information by digital images. Due to the easy manipulation property of digital images (by proper computer software) makes us doubtful when are juries using digital images as forensic evidence in courts, especially, if the digital images are main evidence to demonstrate the relationship between suspects and the criminals. Obviously, here demonstrate importance of data Originality Protection methods to detect unauthorized process like modification or duplication and then enhancement protection of evidence to guarantee rights of incriminatory. In this paper, we shall introduce a novel digital forensic security framework for digital image authentication and originality identification techniques and related methodologies, algorithms and protocols that are applied on camera captured images. The approach depends on implanting secret code into RGB images that should indicate any unauthorized modification on the image under investigation. The secret code generation depends mainly on two main parameter types, namely the image characteristics and capturing device identifier. In this paper, the architecture framework will be analyzed, explained and discussed together with the associated protocols, algorithms and methodologies. Abstract

The aim of integrity protection process is not only to secure the send message, but also ensures that the original message is not modified during sending the message. In this paper, a novel proposed model is proposed to verify that the sent message was not modified. The proposed model starting with encrypting the original message and applying one of the hash functions on the message. The ciphered message, private key, and the output of hash function was reshaped to apply Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), Zig-zag ordering, and Huffman coding to obtain a compressed text, this compressed text is then hidden in an image. The same steps with a reverse order are applied on the receiver to obtain the decrypted message and then apply the same hash function to verify that the message was not changed. Abstract

In the present investigation, aluminum metal matrix composites (AMMs) reinforced with aluminum nitride (AlN) nanoparticulates at different volumetric ratios of (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 vol.%) were manufactured via a microwave-assisted powder metallurgy technique. The morphological, physical, mechanical, and electrochemical properties of the produced billets were examined to reflect the impact of the successive addition of AlN into the aluminum (Al) matrix. The morphological analysis revealed the high crystalline patterns of the formation of the Al-AlN composites. The microstructural analysis confirmed the presence of the elemental constituents of Al and AlN particles in the fabricated composites, showing an enhanced degree of agglomeration in conjunction with the additional amount of AlN. Positive behavior exhibited by the micro- and nanohardness was noticeable in the Al-AlN composites, especially at the ultimate concentration of AlN in the Al matrix of a 2 vol.%, where it reached 669.4 ± 28.1 MPa and 659.1 ± 11 MPa compared to the pure Al metal at 441.2 ± 20 MPa and 437.5 ± 11 MPa, respectively. A declining trend in the compressive strength was recorded in the reinforced Al samples. The corrosion resistance of the AlN-reinforced Al metal matrix was estimated at 3.5 wt.% NaCl using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization. The results reveal that the inclusion of 2.0 vol.%AlN led to the lowest corrosion rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study investigates the simultaneous decoration of vertically aligned molybdenum disulfide nanostructure (VA-MoS2) with Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and nitrogen functionalization. Nitrogen functionalization was achieved through physical vapor deposition (PVD) DC-magnetron sputtering using nitrogen as a reactive gas, aiming to induce p-type behavior in MoS2. The utilization of reactive sputtering resulted in the growth of three-dimensional silver structures on the surface of MoS2, promoting the formation of silver nanoparticles. A comprehensive characterization was conducted to assess surface modifications and analyze chemical and structural changes. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed the presence of silver on the MoS2 surface. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed successful decoration with silver nanoparticles, showing that deposition time affects the size and distribution of the silver on the MoS2 surface. Abstract

Thermoelectric materials have long been proven to be effective in converting heat energy into electricity and vice versa. Since semiconductors have been used in the thermoelectric field, much work has been done to improve their efficiency. The interrelation between their thermoelectric physical parameters (Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity) required special tailoring in order to get the maximum improvement in their performance. Various approaches have been reported in the research for developing thermoelectric performance, including doping and alloying, nanostructuring, and nanocompositing. Among different types of thermoelectric materials, layered chalcogenide materials are unique materials with distinctive properties. They have low self-thermal conductivity, and their layered structure allows them to be modified easily to improve their thermoelectric performance. In this review, basic knowledge of thermoelectric concepts and challenges for enhancing the figure of merit is provided. It discusses briefly different groups of layered chalcogenide thermoelectric materials with their structure and thermoelectric properties. It also reports different approaches in the literature for improving their performance and the recent progress done in this field. It highlights graphene as a promising nano additive to layered chalcogenide materials’ matrix and shows its effect on enhancing their figure of merit.

Abstract

This paper provides a critical review on the current status of graphene-reinforced metal matrix composites (GRMMCs) in an effort to guide future work on this topic. Metal matrix composites are preferred over other types of composites for their ability to meet engineering and structural demands. Graphene is considered an ideal reinforcement material for composites due to its unique structure and extraordinary physical, thermal, and electrical properties. Incorporating graphene as a reinforcement in metals is a way of harnessing its extraordinary properties, resulting in an enhanced metallic behavior for a wide variety of applications. Combining graphene with bulk metal matrices is a recent endeavor that has proven to have merit. A systematic study is needed to critically examine the efforts applied in this field, the successes achieved, and the challenges faced. This review highlights the three main pillars of GRMMCs: synthesis, structure, and properties. First, it discusses the synthesis techniques utilized for the fabrication of GRMMCs. Then, it highlights the resulting microstructures of the composites, including graphene dispersion and interfacial interactions. Finally, it summarizes the enhancements in the mechanical, electrical, thermal, and tribological properties of GRMMCs, while highlighting the effects of graphene type and content on those enhancements.
