We examined how a group of Chinese undergraduate students understood paraphrasing and source use conventions for research paper writing in English. Prior scholarship has generated valuable insights about novice second language (L2) writers' unconventional source use practices, but little is known about how these writers interpret and understand source use expectations for English academic writing. We followed a group of nine Chinese undergraduate students for an academic term as they learned to paraphrase and write with sources for their research paper assignments. Drafts of students' papers were collected and rounds of text-based interviews were conducted where students were asked to explain their source use decisions. Findings showed that the students actively and constantly referenced their source use knowledge of Chinese essay writing to help make sense of source use expectations for English academic writing, although their understanding of English academic source use as well as their rendition of culture may likely be viewed by expert academic writers as 'insufficient' or 'inadequate'. We conclude by highlighting the importance of foregrounding learner voice and acknowledging the legitimacy of the interpretations of novice L2 writers as intercultural informants in the teaching of English academic source use.

In recent years, with the economic development of various countries, education has also made great leaps, and piano teaching has been popularized and promoted in various universities. Pianos are also put into use in universities through normal channels. According to the survey, there are certain drawbacks in the teaching process of piano, which hinder the teaching effect to a great extent. In order to better adapt to the interactive teaching mode, this paper takes the flipped classroom in piano teaching as an example to conduct a systematic study based on the method of artificial intelligence. This paper introduces three typical artificial intelligence technologies and analyzes the three evaluative indicators corresponding to the effect of piano interactive teaching. The analysis results show that the prediction effect based on fuzzy neural inference system is the best. In addition, the three-dimensional display of the prediction data shows that the prediction effect obtained by artificial intelligence shows a strong consistency with the actual evaluation effect.

Abstract Currently, the relationship between axial rotation of the vertebrae and bone mineral density (BMD) measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and quantitative computed tomography (QCT) remains controversial. The aim of this study is to quantitatively assess the effect of vertebral rotation on volumetric bone mineral density (v-BMD) and areal bone mineral density (a-BMD), further to propose the corrected strategies. To achieve this, a phantom, which was rotated from 0° to 25° in 5° increments, was utilized. Bone mineral content (BMC), a-BMD, v-BMD, and projected area (p-AREA) were measured. The Kruskal–Wallis non-parametric test or one-way ANOVA was used to examine the differences in variables between the different groups. The Pearson and Spearman correlation was used to test the relationships between quantitative parameters and rotated angles. Abstract Currently, surgical resection remains the primary approach for treating oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), with limited options for effective drug therapy. Cardamonin, a principal compound derived from Myristica fragrans of the Zingiberaceae family, has garnered attention for its potential to suppress the onset and progression of various malignancies encompassing breast cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, and ovarian cancers. Nevertheless, the involvement of cardamonin in the treatment of OSCC and its underlying mechanisms are yet to be elucidated. This research explored the possible target of cardamonin in treating OSCC via network pharmacological analysis. Subsequently, this research investigated the impact of cardamonin on OSCC cells via in vitro experiments, revealing its capacity to impede the migration, proliferation, and invasion of OSCC cells. Additionally, western blotting analysis demonstrated that cardamonin facilitates apoptosis by regulating the PI3K/AKT pathway. The findings suggest that MMP9 and the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway may serve as the target and pathway of cardamonin in treating OSCC. To summarize, the research findings suggest that cardamonin may facilitate apoptosis in OSCC cells by inhibition of PI3K/AKT pathway activation. These outcomes offer a theoretical basis for the utilization of cardamonin as a natural drug for treating OSCC.

Background: Emerging evidence suggests that cell deaths are involved in tumorigenesis and progression, which may be treated as a novel direction of cancers. Recently, a novel type of programmed cell death, disulfidptosis, was discovered. However, the detailed biological and clinical impact of disulfidptosis and related regulators remains largely unknown. Methods: In this work, we first enrolled pancancer datasets and performed multi-omics analysis, including gene expression, DNA methylation, copy number variation and single nucleic variation profiles. Then we deciphered the biological implication of disulfidptosis in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) by machine learning. Finally, a novel agent targeting at disulfidptosis in ccRCC was identified and verified. Results: We found that disulfidptosis regulators were dysregulated among cancers, which could be explained by aberrant DNA methylation and genomic mutation events. Disulfidptosis scores were depressed among cancers and negatively correlated with epithelial mesenchymal transition. Disulfidptosis regulators could satisfactorily stratify risk subgroups in ccRCC, and a novel subtype, DCS3, owning with disulfidptosis depression, insensitivity to immune therapy and aberrant genome instability were identified and verified. Moreover, treating DCS3 with NU1025 could significantly inhibit ccRCC malignancy. Conclusion: This work provided a better understanding of disulfidptosis in cancers and new insights into individual management based on disulfidptosis.

Low temperature, rainfall/snowfall and freezing is a complex climate event. Although extreme low temperature, rainfall/snowfall and freezing events occur infrequently, they often cause serious impacts. Researching evolutionary characteristics of low temperature, rainfall/ snowfall and freezing events is of great significance for effective defense and mitigation of disaster impacts. By using daily meteorological observation data from 1981 to 2024 in Hubei and selecting indicators from three aspects: low temperature, rainfall/snowfall and freezing, a comprehensive evaluation model for large-scale sustained low temperature, rainfall/snowfall and freezing events was established. According to the types of disaster-causing factors and the disaster characteristics of the affected bodies, these events were classified and ranked. Combined with the historical disaster data, the disaster characteristics of large-scale sustained low temperature, rainfall/snowfall and freezing events in Hubei since 1981 were then analyzed. The results are as follows. (1) There have been a total of 64 large-scale sustained low temperature, rainfall/snowfall and freezing events in Hubei in the past 44 years, with an average of 1.5 occurrences per year. January has the highest frequency of occurrence, accounting for about 42%, followed by February, accounting for about 34%. (2) The large-scale sustained low temperature, rainfall/snowfall and freezing events in Hubei are classified into six types, with rain and snow type accounting for 40%, low temperature, rainfall/snowfall and freezing type accounting for 31%, and low temperature, rain, and snow type accounting for 16%, other types accounting for a total of 13%. The strongest 10 events all belong to low temperature, rainfall/snowfall and freezing type. (3) The direct economic losses caused by low temperature, rainfall/snowfall and freezing disasters in Hubei have shown an overall increasing trend, but the proportion of direct economic losses to GDP has shown a certain decreasing trend, with a relatively small proportion since 2012. (4) The correlation between the comprehensive intensity index and direct economic losses of large-scale sustained low temperature, rainfall/snowfall and freezing events in Hubei follows a power curve distribution. When the comprehensive intensity index of the event exceeds 1.85, the direct economic losses increase rapidly.

Abstract Climate change affects the geographical distribution of species. Predicting the future potential areas suitable for certain species is of great significance for understanding their distribution characteristics and exerting their value. Based on the data of 276 effective distribution points of Polygonum capitatum and 20 ecological factors, the maximum entropy (MaxEnt) model and the ArcGIS software were employed to predict the areas suitable for P. capitatum growth, and the main environmental factors affecting the geographical distribution of this species were explored. Under the current climatic conditions, the areas highly suitable for P. capitatum are mainly distributed in southwestern China, with a small number of sites in coastal areas and most sites in Guizhou Province. Under different climate scenarios, the suitable areas were reduced to varying degrees. The dominant environmental variables affecting the distribution of P. capitatum were precipitation in the driest month, annual precipitation, and elevation, with a cumulative contribution rate of 84.1%. Against the background of a changing climate, the areas suitable for P. capitatum in China will be widely distributed in the southwestern region, with Guizhou Province and Yunnan Province as the main distribution areas; some sites will also be distributed throughout the southwest of Tibet Autonomous Region, the south of Sichuan Province, the north of Guangxi Autonomous Region, and the coastal area of Fujian Province. Optimal conditions for P. capitatum include a dry month precipitation range of 13.4 to 207.3 mm, elevations from 460.3 to 7214.3 m, and annual precipitation between 810 and 1575 mm. Given these insights, we recommend enhanced conservation efforts in current prime habitats and exploring potential cultivation in newly identified suitable regions to ensure the species’ preservation and sustainable use.

Abstract Objective Explore the efficacy and safety of involved-field irradiation (IFI) combined with S-1 as definitive concurrent chemoradiotherapy (dCRT) for locally advanced elderly esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), under the premise of intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). Methods We designed a prospective single-arm phase II study. The study enrolled 91 patients aged 75 to 92 years. Eligible participants had histologically confirmed squamous cell carcinoma, stage II to IV disease based on the 8th edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC). All elderly patients (EPs) received dCRT with S-1. which was administered orally twice daily for 28 days. The radiotherapy dose was 61.2 Gy delivered in 34 fractions or 50.4 Gy delivered in 28 fractions. The primary endpoint was 2-year overall survival (OS), and the secondary endpoints were progression-free survival (PFS), local control rate (LCR), and safety. Results From July 2017 to July 2021, we enrolled EPs with ESCC who were treated at the Jiangsu Cancer hospital. As of August 1, 2023, the median follow-up of surviving EPs was 31.4 months (IQR: 25.2 to 72.6 months). 83 patients (91.2%) completed the whole course of treatment. The 2-year OS rate was 59.2%, and the PFS rate was 43.7%. The most common grade 1 to 2 adverse effects (AEs) were radiation esophagitis (79.1%), and then were radiation pneumonia (46.2%). Anemia (41.8%) was the most common of grade 1 to 2 hematologic toxicity. The incidence of grade 3 or above AEs was 24.2%, and the incidence of leukopenia was the highest (11.0%). There was not one death due to treatment-related toxicity. In a subgroup analysis of radiotherapy doses, we found no statistically significant differences in PFS (P = 0.465) and OS (P = 0.345) in EPs with ESCC who received 50.4 Gy and 61.2 Gy, and that patients in the 50.4 Gy group had lower dermatitis (P = 0.045) and anemia (P = 0.004). Conclusions IF-IMRT combined with S-1 is a promising regimen for elderly ESCC. And the radiotherapy dose of 50.4 Gy remains the standard dose for EPs with ESCC undergoing CCRT.

Abstract Objective To investigate the value of magnetic resonance examination technique for prenatal genetic diagnosis and clinical intrauterine treatment of fetal congenital cystic adenoma (CCAM) of the lung. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on 108 pregnant women admitted to a certain hospital from January 2016 to January 2022 for pre natal examination and consultation on eugenics. The selected pregnant women were aged 20–40 and had a gestational age of 17–36 weeks. Ultrasound and MRI examinations were performed on 108 pregnant women who met the inclusion criteria. Follow-up and investigation were conducted on the fetus after being diagnosed with CCAM. To analyze the results of prenatal genetic diagnosis, chromosome microarray analysis (CMA) was used to analyze samples with pathogenic Copy Number Variants (CNV) and identify pathogenic genes. Finally, the imaging diagnosis results obtained through statistical software were analyzed, and the correlation between pathogenic genes and CCAM, as well as the clinical application value of MRI in fetal intrauterine treatment was explored. Results Among all cases, 68 fetuses were diagnosed with CCAM through ultrasound examination; 71 fetuses were diagnosed with CCAM through MRI examination. A total of 74 samples were confirmed as CCAM by autopsy and neonatal CT. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of MRI in diagnosing fetal congenital CCAM were higher than those of ultrasound examination. The expression of CCAM was positively correlated with DUSP22, PRSS1, and SHOX, with all R values greater than 0.8. The clinical decision curve showed that when the probability of fetal CCAM was less than 0.03, the prenatal genetic diagnostic model of MRI was not applicable; But when the probability of fetal CCAM was higher than 0.05, the auxiliary intrauterine treatment effect that MRI diagnostic methods achieved was significantly better than conventional diagnosis. Conclusion MRI is significantly better than ultrasound in the diagnosis of CCAM, which can effectively improve the sensitivity of diagnosis and provide accurate information for the eugenics of pregnant women, and has high clinical application value.

Sarcodon mushrooms are esteemed as a rare and highly valuable resource for both culinary and medicinal purposes. Ancient medical classics have documented their beneficial effects on conditions such as indigestion, loss of appetite, and neurological disorders. Modern phytochemical research into their secondary metabolites has led to the discovery of numerous bioactive compounds with significant biological activities. Despite notable achievements in the study of the chemical composition and bioactivity of Sarcodon mushrooms, a comprehensive understanding of these findings has been lacking. This review provides an exhaustive summary of the advancements in the phytochemistry of Sarcodon mushrooms, as well as the biological and pharmacological activities of the isolated compounds and crude extracts derived from Sarcodon over the past nine decades. A total of 100 secondary metabolites isolated from these mushrooms have been classified into five major categories based on their chemical structures, which exhibit bioactivities such as anti-tumour, neurotrophic, and neuroprotective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and hypoglycaemic properties. The aim of this study is to establish a scientific foundation for future research in drug discovery, biotechnological development, and the exploration of functional foods involving Sarcodon mushrooms.

Abstract Background Cobalt (Co) is a metal which is widely used in the industrial production. The previous studies found the toxic effects of environmental Co exposure on multiple organs. However, the correlation of blood Co concentration with lung function was inconsistent in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods All 771 stable COPD patients were recruited. Peripheral blood and clinical information were collected. The levels of blood Co and serum CC16 were measured. Results Cross-sectional study suggested that the level of blood Co was inversely and dose-dependently related to lung function parameters. Each 1 ppm elevation of blood Co was related to 0.598 L decline in FVC, 0.465 L decline in FEV1, 6.540% decline in FEV1/FVC%, and 14.013% decline in FEV1%, respectively. Moreover, higher age, enrolled in winter, current-smoking, higher smoking amount, and inhaled corticosteroids prominently exacerbated the negative correlation between blood Co and lung function. Besides, serum CC16 content was gradually reduced with blood Co elevation in COPD patients. Besides, serum CC16 was positively correlated with lung function, and inversely related to blood Co. Additionally, decreased CC16 substantially mediated 11.45% and 6.37% Co-triggered downregulations in FEV1 and FEV1%, respectively. Conclusion Blood Co elevation is closely related to the reductions of pulmonary function and serum CC16. CC16 exerts a significantly mediating role of Co-related to pulmonary function decrease among COPD patients.

The digital image correlation (DIC) technology was used to investigate the evolution law of the coal surface strain field under different loading rates and to analyze the influence of loading rate on the evolution of the deformation field, deformation localization, and surface deformation energy density. The experimental results indicate that the higher the loading rate is, the more complete the final failure mode of the coal body, and the failure mode of the coal body also transitions from shear failure to tensile failure; the loading rates of different magnitudes also affect the localization time of coal deformation. The higher the loading rate is, the greater the proportion of the initiation time of coal deformation localization to the overall failure time. The higher the loading rate is, the more obvious the growth trend of deformation energy density before deformation localization, and the more energy accumulates in the surface deformation localization area; the qreater the stress at the start time of deformation localization.

Abstract Background The effects of a diverse spectrum of malaria interventions were evaluated through a deterministic Plasmodium vivax transmission model. This approach aimed to provide theoretical evidence of the performance of these interventions once implemented for achieving malaria elimination. Methods An integrated intervention portfolio, including mass drug administration, insecticide treatment, and untreated bed nets, was analyzed through modeling. Additionally, data-driven calibration was implemented to infer coverages that effectively reproduced historical malaria patterns in China from 1971 to 1983. Results MDA utilizing primaquine emerged as the most effective single intervention, achieving a 70% reduction in malaria incidence when implemented at full coverage. Furthermore, a strategic combination of MDA with primaquine, chloroquine, untreated bed nets, and seasonal insecticide treatments effectively eradicated malaria, attaining elimination at a coverage level of 70%. It was conclusively demonstrated that an integrated approach combining MDA and vector control measures is essential for the successful elimination of malaria. Conclusion High coverage of mass drug administration with primaquine and chloroquine before transmission was the key driver of the malaria decline in China from 1971 to 1983. The best-fit intervention coverage combinations derived from calibration are provided as a reference for malaria control in other countries.

Abstract Objective In this study, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of 1 μg/kg dexmedetomidine as an adjuvant treatment to ropivacaine in children undergoing upper limb surgeries under ultrasound-guided axillary brachial plexus blocks and general anesthesia. Methods We enrolled 90 children (aged 1–8 years; ASA I-II) undergoing closed reduction and internal fixation for upper extremity fractures at the Xiamen Children's Hospital and randomly assigned them to one of two groups: L (injection with 0.25% ropivacaine) or D (injection with 0.25% ropivacaine containing 1 μg/kg dexmedetomidine) using the random number table method. The main outcome indicators recorded were the facial expression, leg activity, position, crying, and Face, Legs, Activity, Cry, and Consolability (FLACC) scale scores of children after surgery and the duration of block and analgesia maintenance. The secondary outcome indicators were vital sign data at the time of ultrasound probe placement (T1), at the time of block completion (T2), prior to the beginning of surgery (T3), 5 min after the beginning of surgery (T4), and at the end of surgery (T5), as well as the time of postoperative recovery, the number of cases of remedial analgesia, and complications. Results There was no statistical difference between the two groups in terms of general data, block completion time, postoperative recovery time, and complications (P > 0.05). Compared to the L group, the D group had significantly lower FLACC scores at 6 h after surgery, as well as significantly lower systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate values at T4 and T5, and significantly longer duration of postoperative analgesia maintenance (all P

Abstract Background Sirolimus is increasingly utilized in treating diseases associated with mTOR pathway overactivation. Despite its potential, the lack of evidence regarding its long-term safety across all age groups, particularly in pediatric patients, has limited its further application. This study aims to assess the long-term safety of sirolimus, with a specific focus on its impact on growth patterns in pediatric patients. Methods This pooled analysis inlcudes two prospective cohort studies spanning 10 years, including 1,738 participants (aged 5 days to 69 years) diagnosed with tuberous sclerosis and/or lymphangioleiomyomatosis. All participants were mTOR inhibitor-naive and received 1 mg/m²/day of sirolimus, with dose adjustments during a two-week titration period to maintain trough blood concentrations between 5 and 10 ng/ml (maximum dose 2 mg). Indicators of physical growth, hematopoietic, liver, renal function, and blood lipid levels were all primary outcomes and were analyzed. The adverse events and related management were also recorded. Results Sirolimus administration did not lead to deviations from normal growth ranges, but higher doses exhibited a positive association with Z-scores exceeding 2 SD in height, weight, and BMI. Transient elevations in red blood cell and white blood cell counts, along with hyperlipidemia, were primarily observed within the first year of treatment. Other measured parameters remained largely unchanged, displaying only weak correlations with drug use. Stomatitis is the most common adverse event (920/1738, 52.9%). In adult females, menstrual disorders were observed in 48.5% (112/217). Conclusions Sirolimus’s long-term administration is not associated with adverse effects on children’s physical growth pattern, nor significant alterations in hematopoietic, liver, renal function, or lipid levels. Abstract Background Adherence to healthy lifestyle habits has become a mainstream approach for lessening the burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) during initial prevention efforts. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of four healthy lifestyle habits, the associated factors, and their impact on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality among residents of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Methods From 2015 to 2019, individuals between the ages of 35 and 75 from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region were recruited through the ChinaHeart Million Person Project. Our study examined four healthy lifestyle habits: not smoking, no or moderate amounts of alcohol, sufficient leisure time physical activity (LTPA) and a balanced diet. Results Out of the 19,969 individuals involved, the majority, 77.3% did not smoke, while 96.7% had limited alcohol intake, 24.5% engaged in sufficient LTPA, 5.5% followed a balanced diet, and merely 1.7% adhered to all four healthy lifestyle habits. Abstract Objectives The objective of this study was to examine the imaging features of hepatic inflammatory pseudotumors (IPTs) associated with IgG4-related and IgG4-unrelated conditions and to enhance the approach toward distinguishing between these two types of IPTs. Methods A retrospective study was conducted, involving 20 patients diagnosed with hepatic IPTs. Imaging procedures were conducted within a timeframe of 4 weeks prior to hepatectomy or biopsy. The imaging features were then analyzed and compared using chi-squared analysis. Results Seventeen (81.0%) IPTs were located in the hepatic subcapsular area; six (66.7%) IgG4-related IPTs were distributed around the hepatic hilum; and eleven (91.7%) IgG4-unrelated and three (33.3%) IgG4-related IPTs had unclear boundaries. All lesions exhibited similar characteristics in CT scans, T1-weighted imaging (T1WI), T2-weighted imaging (T2WI), and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), with the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values slightly higher than the surrounding liver tissue. Delayed hypoenhancement, observed in five cases (55.6%), was exclusively present in IgG4-related IPTs. The remaining IPT lesions displayed progressive enhancement, septal and marginal enhancement, and persistent enhancement. Central enhancement was absent in three IgG4-related IPTs (33.3%) and ten IgG4-unrelated IPTs (83.3%). The duct-penetrating sign was identified in two IgG4-unrelated IPTs (16.7%) and seven IgG4-related IPTs (77.8%). Furthermore, seven patients with IgG4-related IPTs had additional lesions outside the liver. Conclusions IgG4-related lesions are frequently found in the vicinity of the hepatic hilum; they display the duct-penetrating sign and affect other organs as well. Both groups exhibited progressive or persistent contrast enhancement in typical IPT lesions, but delayed hypoenhancement was only observed in the IgG4-related IPT group. IgG4-unrelated IPT lesions often exhibited indistinct boundaries lacking central enhancement. Critical relevance statement Differences in imaging features differentiate IgG4-related and -unrelated inflammatory pseudotumors (IPT). IgG4-related lesions are frequently near the hepatic hilum, display duct-penetrating sign, and affect other organs. Only the IgG4-related group demonstrated delayed hypoenhancement. IgG4-unrelated IPT lesions often exhibited indistinct boundaries lacking central enhancement. Key Points Compared with IgG 4-unrelated IPTs, IgG4-related IPTs show delayed hypoenhancement and affect other organs. IgG4-unrelated IPTs have unclear boundaries and lack central enhancement. Abstract Background Pancreatic fibrosis is an early diagnostic feature of the common inherited disorder cystic fibrosis (CF). Many people with CF (pwCF) are pancreatic insufficient from birth and the replacement of acinar tissue with cystic lesions and fibrosis is a progressive phenotype that may later lead to diabetes. Little is known about the initiating events in the fibrotic process though it may be a sequela of inflammation in the pancreatic ducts resulting from loss of CFTR impairing normal fluid secretion. Here we use a sheep model of CF (CFTR −/− ) to examine the evolution of pancreatic disease through gestation. Methods Fetal pancreas was collected at six time points from 50-days of gestation through to term, which is equivalent to ~ 13 weeks to term in human. RNA was extracted from tissue for bulk RNA-seq and single cells were prepared from 80-day, 120-day and term samples for scRNA-seq. Data were validated by immunochemistry. Results Transcriptomic evidence from bulk RNA-seq showed alterations in the CFTR −/− pancreas by 65-days of gestation, which are accompanied by marked pathological changes by 80-days of gestation. These include a fibrotic response, confirmed by immunostaining for COL1A1, αSMA and SPARC, together with acinar loss. Moreover, using scRNA-seq we identify a unique cell population that is significantly overrepresented in the CFTR −/− animals at 80- and 120-days gestation, as are stellate cells at term. Conclusion The transcriptomic changes and cellular imbalance that we observe likely have pivotal roles in the evolution of CF pancreatic disease and may provide therapeutic opportunities to delay or prevent pancreatic destruction in CF.

Abstract Background Childhood maltreatment (CM) is linked to long-term adverse health outcomes, including accelerated biological aging and cognitive decline. This study investigates the relationship between CM and various aging biomarkers: telomere length, facial aging, intrinsic epigenetic age acceleration (IEAA), GrimAge, HannumAge, PhenoAge, frailty index, and cognitive performance. Methods We conducted a Mendelian randomization (MR) study using published GWAS summary statistics. Aging biomarkers included telomere length (qPCR), facial aging (subjective evaluation), and epigenetic age markers (HannumAge, IEAA, GrimAge, PhenoAge). The frailty index was calculated from clinical assessments, and cognitive performance was evaluated with standardized tests. Analyses included Inverse-Variance Weighted (IVW), MR Egger, and Weighted Median (WM) methods, adjusted for multiple comparisons. Results CM was significantly associated with shorter telomere length (IVW: β = − 0.1, 95% CI − 0.18 to − 0.02, pFDR = 0.032) and increased HannumAge (IVW: β = 1.33, 95% CI 0.36 to 2.3, pFDR = 0.028), GrimAge (IVW: β = 1.19, 95% CI 0.19 to 2.2, pFDR = 0.040), and PhenoAge (IVW: β = 1.4, 95% CI 0.12 to 2.68, pFDR = 0.053). A significant association was also found with the frailty index (IVW: β = 0.31, 95% CI 0.13 to 0.49, pFDR = 0.006). No significant associations were found with facial aging, IEAA, or cognitive performance. Conclusions CM is linked to accelerated biological aging, shown by shorter telomere length and increased epigenetic aging markers. CM was also associated with increased frailty, highlighting the need for early interventions to mitigate long-term effects. Further research should explore mechanisms and prevention strategies.

Abstract Objective The aim of this study is to evaluate the findings of existing systematic reviews (SRs) and provide scientific evidence on the efficacy and safety of whole-body vibration (WBV) in improving bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women, to provide recommendations and guidance for future high-quality clinical research and SRs. Methods We conducted searches in six databases (SinoMed, CNKI, Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, Web of Science) from the inception of the databases until July 31, 2023. The language was limited to Chinese or English. The methodological quality, risk of bias, and evidence grade of outcomes were evaluated using AMSTAR-2, ROBIS, and GRADE, respectively. Additionally, the degree of overlap in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) among the SRs was calculated using corrected covered area (CCA). Furthermore, we performed quantitative synthesis or descriptive analysis of the relevant data. All relevant operations were independently conducted by two individuals. Results A total of 15 SRs were included in the analysis, out of which three were qualitative descriptions and 12 were meta-analyses. According to AMSTAR-2, only two SRs were rated as low or moderate, while the remaining 13 SRs were rated as critically low quality. The ROBIS assessment indicated that seven SRs had a low risk of bias, while 8 SRs had a high risk of bias. The overall findings suggest that WBV does not have a significant advantage in improving BMD in postmenopausal women. Furthermore, the CCA results revealed a high overlap in RCTs across five outcomes among the 15 SRs. Only five SRs reported specific adverse reactions/events experienced by participants after WBV interventions, and none of the SRs reported any severe adverse events. Conclusion The existing evidence cannot establish definitive advantages of WBV in improving BMD in postmenopausal women. Therefore, we do not recommend the use of WBV for improving BMD in postmenopausal women. However, WBV may have potential value in maintaining BMD in postmenopausal women, further research is needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract Background Oxylipins including lipoxin A4 (LXA4) facilitate the resolution of inflammation and possess analgesic properties by inhibiting macrophage infiltration and transient receptor potential (TRP) protein expression. Yu-Xue-Bi Tablet (YXB) is a traditional Chinese patent medicine used to relieve inflammatory pain. Our previous research has shown that the analgesic effect of YXB is related to inhibiting peripheral inflammation and regulating macrophage infiltration, but the mechanism is not yet clear. The purpose of this study is to explore the mechanisms of YXB on mice models with Complete Freund’s Adjuvant (CFA)-induced inflammatory pain from the perspective at the resolution of inflammation. Methods Mechanical allodynia thresholds and heat hypersensitivity were measured using the Von Frey test and the hot plate test respectively. The open field test and the tail suspension test were employed to measure anxiety and depressive behaviors respectively. The expression of CD68+ and the proportion of F4/80+CD11b+ cells were measured by immunofluorescence staining and flow cytometry. The expression of transient receptor potential ankyrin 1(TRPA1) was measured by immunofluorescence staining and western blotting. Oxylipins omics analysis provided quantitative data on oxylipins in the paws, and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to measure the levels of LXA4 there. Immunofluorescence staining was used to perform the expression of Leukotriene A4 hydroxylase (LTA4H) in the paws of mice. The impact of injecting the formyl peptide receptor 2(FPR2) antagonist WRW4 and the TRPA1 agonist AITC into the left paws was observed, focusing on the expression of mechanical allodynia thresholds, the expression of CD68+, TRPA1 in the paws, and Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in the L5 spinal dorsal horn. Results YXB elevated mechanical allodynia thresholds, alleviated heat hypersensitivity and anxiety and depressive behaviors in CFA mice. It significantly reduced the number of CD68+ and proportion of F4/80+CD11b+ within the paws, thereby decreasing macrophage infiltration. Additionally, it diminished the expression of TRPA1 in the paws and TRPV1 in the DRG, leading to an inhibition of peripheral sensitization. Through quantitative analysis, it was found that YXB could modulate DHA-derived oxylipins and LXA4. ELISA results indicated that YXB elevated the levels of LXA4 and inhibited the expression of LAT4H in the paws. Furthermore, the pro-resolution and analgesic effects of YXB were hindered after administration of the FPR2 antagonist. Compared with the AITC group, YXB showed no significant improvement in anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. Conclusions YXB can regulate the oxylipins of paws in CFA mice to promote the resolution of inflammation. The LXA4-FPR2-TRPA1 pathway is a key mechanism for the resolution of inflammation and analgesic effects.

Abstract Background Assessment of the effective use of international travel measures during the COVID-19 pandemic has focused on public health goals, namely limiting virus introduction and onward transmission. However, risk-based approaches includes the weighing of public health goals against potential social, economic and other secondary impacts. Advancing risk-based approaches thus requires fuller understanding of available evidence on such impacts. Methods We conducted a scoping review of existing studies of the social impacts of international travel measures during the COVID-19 pandemic. Applying a standardized typology of travel measures, and five categories of social impact, we searched 9 databases across multiple disciplines spanning public health and the social sciences. We identified 26 studies for inclusion and reviewed their scope, methods, type of travel measure, and social impacts analysed. Results The studies cover a diverse range of national settings with a strong focus on high-income countries. A broad range of populations are studied, hindered in their outbound or inbound travel. Most studies focus on 2020 when travel restrictions were widely introduced, but limited attention is given to the broader effects of their prolonged use. Studies primarily used qualitative or mixed methods, with adaptations to comply with public health measures. Most studies focused on travel restrictions, as one type of travel measure, often combined with domestic public health measures, making it difficult to determine their specific social impacts. All five categories of social impacts were observed although there was a strong emphasis on negative social impacts including family separation, decreased work opportunities, reduced quality of life, and inability to meet cultural needs. A small number of countries identified positive social impacts such as restored work-life balance and an increase in perceptions of safety and security. Conclusions While international travel measures were among the most controversial interventions applied during the COVID-19 pandemic, given their prolonged use and widespread impacts on individuals and populations, there remains limited study of their secondary impacts. If risk-based approaches are to be advanced, involving informed choices between public health and other policy goals, there is a need to better understand such impacts, including their differential impacts across diverse populations and settings.

Rice starch-fatty acid complexes were prepared by compounding rice starch with different chain lengths of lauric acid (C12), myristic acid (C14), and palmitic acid (C16). By measuring the composite index, gelatinization properties, rheological properties, and in vitro digestion properties of the complex, the influence of fatty acid chain length on the properties of rice starch-fatty acid complex was explored. The results showed that compared with rice starch, the solubility, swelling, viscosity value, attenuation value, retrogradation value, viscoelasticity, and digestion properties of rice starch-fatty acid complex were all reduced. Abstract Aims Recent years, several studies have suggested that abnormal baseline left ventricular (LV) function and structure are associated with left ventricular thrombus (LVT) formation. Despite this, most studies have given less attention to the potential role of left ventricular reverse remodelling (LVRR), that is, the improvement of LV function and structure, in resolving LVT. In this study, we aim to investigate the clinical characteristics, prognosis, and LVT resolution in patients with LVRR. Methods and results This is a retrospective study conducted at The First Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University. Our cohort consists of patients diagnosed with LVT between 1 November 2015 and 31 May 2020. Enrolled patients were categorized into two groups: LVRR and Failure of LVRR. The primary endpoints included LVT resolution and embolic events. A total of 84 patients were included in the study, with 59 patients in the LVRR group and 25 patients in the Failure of LVRR group. In our study, patients in the LVRR group experienced higher incidence of LVT resolution and a lower risk of embolic events. Multivariate logistic analysis revealed that Failure of LVRR was the only independent negative predictor for LVT resolution and positive predictor for embolic events. Conclusions Patients with LVRR experience higher incidence of LVT resolution and have lower risk of embolic events, highlighting the significance of identifying and mitigating risk factors that contribute to abnormal LV function and structure in management of patients with LVT.

Abstract Peritoneal metastasis (PM), the regional progression of intra-abdominal malignancies, is a common sequelae of colorectal cancer (CRC). Immunotherapy is slated to be effective in generating long-lasting anti-tumour response as it utilizes the specificity and memory of the immune system. In the tumour microenvironment, tumour associated macrophages (TAMs) are posited to create an anti-inflammatory pro-tumorigenic environment. In this paper, we aimed to identify immunomodulatory factors associated with colorectal PM (CPM). A publicly available colorectal single cell database (GSE183916) was analysed to identify possible immunological markers that are associated with the activation of macrophages in cancers. Immunohistochemical analysis for V-set and immunoglobin containing domain 4 (VSIG4) expression was performed on tumour microarrays (TMAs) of tumours of colorectal origin (n = 211). Expression of VSIG4 in cell-free ascites obtained from CPM patients (n = 39) was determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). CD163-positive TAMs cluster expression was extracted from a publicly available single cell database and evaluated for the top 100 genes. From these macrophage-expressed genes, VSIG4, a membrane protein produced by the M2 macrophages, mediates the up-regulation of anti-inflammatory and down-regulation of pro-inflammatory macrophages, contributing to an overall anti-inflammatory state. CRC TMA IHC staining showed that low expression of VSIG4 in stromal tissues of primary CRC are associated with poor prognosis (p = 0.0226). CPM ascites also contained varying concentrations of VSIG4, which points to a possible role of VSIG4 in the ascites. The contribution of VSIG4 to CPM development can be further evaluated for its potential as an immunotherapeutic agent.

Abstract Echovirus 30 (E30), a member of the species B Enterovirus family, is a primary pathogen responsible for aseptic meningitis and encephalitis. E30 is associated with severe nervous system diseases and is a primary cause of child illness, disability, and even mortality. However, the mechanisms underlying E30-induced brain injury remain poorly understood. In this study, we used a neonatal mouse model of E30 to investigate the possible mechanisms of brain injury. E30 infection triggered the activation of microglia in the mouse brain and efficiently replicated within HMC3 cells. Subsequent transcriptomic analysis revealed inflammatory activation of microglia in response to E30 infection. We also detected a significant upregulation of polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1) and found that its inhibition could limit E30 infection in a sucking mouse model. Collectively, E30 infection led to brain injury in a neonatal mouse model, which may be related to excessive inflammatory responses. Our findings highlight the intricate interplay between E30 infection and neurological damage, providing crucial insights that could guide the development of interventions and strategies to address the severe clinical manifestations associated with this pathogen.

Abstract Background Crop diversification is considered as an imperative approach for synchronizing the plant nutrient demands and soil nutrient availability. Taking two or more crops from the same field in one year is considered as multiple cropping. It improves the diversity and abundance of soil microbes, thereby improving the growth and yield of crops. Therefore, the present study was conducted to explore the effects of different multiple winter cropping on soil microbial communities in paddy fields. In this study, eight rice cropping patterns from two multiple cropping systems with three different winter crops, including Chinese milk vetch (CMV), rape, and wheat were selected. The effects of different multiple winter cropping on soil microbial abundance, community structure, and diversity in paddy fields were studied by 16 S rRNA high-throughput sequencing and real-time fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results The results showed that different multiple winter cropping increased the operational taxonomic units (OTUs), species richness, and community richness index of the bacterial community in 0 ~ 20 cm soil layer. Moreover, soil physical and chemical properties of different multiple cropping patterns also affected the diversity and abundance of microbial bacterial communities. The multiple cropping increased soil potassium and nitrogen content, which significantly affected the diversity and abundance of bacterial communities, and it also increased the overall paddy yield. Moreover, different winter cropping changed the population distribution of microorganisms, and Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Nitrospira, and Chloroflexi were identified as the most dominant groups. Multiple winter cropping, especially rape-early rice-late rice (TR) andChinese milk vetch- early rice-late rice (TC) enhanced the abundance of Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Actinobacteria and decreased the relative abundance of Verrucomicrobia and Euryarchaeota. Conclusion In conclusion, winter cropping of Chinese milk vetch and rape were beneficial to improve the soil fertility, bacteria diversity, abundance and rice yield.

Abstract Background The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has accentuated the need for effective clinical skills training in infectious diseases. This study aimed to explore the influencing factors of infectious disease clinical skills training based on scenario simulation teaching for medical staff in China. Methods This hospital-based, cross-sectional study was conducted at the Third People’s Hospital of Shenzhen between March and December 2022. Scenario simulation teaching was applied, and factors such as gender, educational level, professional background, and previous experience were examined to determine their impact on qualification outcomes. Results The study included participants primarily between the ages of 20–40 years, with a higher proportion of women holding university degrees. Nurses and physicians were more likely to qualify, indicating the significance of professional backgrounds. Women showed a higher likelihood of qualifying than men and higher educational attainment correlated with better qualification rates. Prior experience with protective clothing in isolation wards was a significant determinant of successful qualification. Multivariate analysis underscored the influence of sex, education, and previous experience on training effectiveness. Conclusion Scenario simulation is an effective strategy for training clinical skills in treating infectious diseases. This study highlights the importance of considering sex, education, professional background, and prior experience when designing training programs to enhance the efficacy and relevance of infectious disease training.

Abstract Background Chromatin regulators (CRs) are capable of causing epigenetic alterations, which are significant features of cancer. However, the function of CRs in controlling Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma (ccRCC) is not well understood. This research aims to discover a CRs prognostic signature in ccRCC and to elucidate the roles of CRs-related genes in tumor microenvironment (TME). Methods Expression profiles and relevant clinical annotations were retrieved from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and UCSC Xena platform for progression-free survival (PFS) data. The R package "limma" was used to identify differentially expressed CRs. A predictive model based on five CRs was developed using LASSO-Cox analysis. The model's predictive power and applicability were validated using K-M curves, ROC curves, nomograms, comparisons with other models, stratified survival analyses, and validation with the ICGC cohort. GO and GSEA analyses were performed to investigate mechanisms differentiating low and high riskScore groups. Immunogenicity was assessed using Tumor Mutational Burden (TMB), immune cell infiltrations were inferred, and immunotherapy was evaluated using immunophenogram analysis and the expression patterns of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) and checkpoint genes. Polyploidy is a major factor in the evolution of plants, yet we know little about the origin and evolution of polyploidy in intertidal species. This study aimed to identify the evolutionary transitions in three true-mangrove species of the genus Acanthus distributed in the Indo–West Pacific region. For this purpose, we took an integrative approach that combined data on morphology, cytology, climatic niche, phylogeny, and biogeography of 493 samples from 42 geographic sites. Our results show that the Acanthus ilicifolius lineage distributed east of the Thai–Malay Peninsula possesses a tetraploid karyotype, which is morphologically distinct from that of the lineage on the west side. The haplotype networks and phylogenetic trees for the chloroplast genome and eight nuclear genes reveal that the tetraploid species has two sub-genomes, one each from A. ilicifolius and A. ebracteatus, the paternal and maternal parents, respectively. Population structure analysis also supports the hybrid speciation history of the new tetraploid species. The two sub-genomes of the tetraploid species diverged from their diploid progenitors during the Pleistocene. Environmental niche models revealed that the tetraploid species not only occupied the near-entire niche space of the diploids, but also expanded into novel environments. Our findings suggest that A. ilicifolius species distributed on the east side of the Thai–Malay Peninsula should be regarded as a new species, A. tetraploideus, which originated from hybridization between A. ilicifolius and A. ebracteatus, followed by chromosome doubling. This is the first report of a true-mangrove allopolyploid species that can reproduce sexually and clonally reproduction, which explains the long-term adaptive potential of the species.

Abstract High-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) is an aggressive disease known to develop resistance to chemotherapy. We investigated the prognostic significance of tumor cell states and potential mechanisms underlying chemotherapy resistance in HGSOC. Transcriptome deconvolution was performed to address cellular heterogeneity. Kaplan–Meier survival curves were plotted to illustrate the outcomes of patients with varying cellular abundances. The association between gene expression and chemotherapy response was tested. After adjusting for surgery status and grading, several cell states exhibited a significant correlation with patient survival. Cell states can organize into carcinoma ecotypes (CE). CE9 and CE10 were proinflammatory, characterized by higher immunoreactivity, and were associated with favorable survival outcomes. Ratios of cell states and ecotypes had better prognostic abilities than a single cell state or ecotype. A total of 1265 differentially expressed genes were identified between samples with high and low levels of C9 or CE10. These genes were partitioned into three co-expressed modules, which were associated with tumor cells and immune cells. Pogz was identified to be linked with immune cell genes and the chemotherapy response of paclitaxel. Collectively, the survival of HGSOC patients is correlated with specific cell states and ecotypes.

Abstract Purpose Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) might markedly increase the survival of selected patients with refractory cardiac arrest. But the application situation and indications remained unclear. Materials and methods We respectively reviwed all adult patients who underwent ECPR from January 2017 to March 2021. Patient characteristics, initiation and management of ECMO, complications, and outcomes were collected and compared between the survivors and nonsurvivors. LASSO regression was used to screen risk factors. Multivariate logistic regression was performed with several parameters screened by LASSO regression. Results Data were reported from 42 ECMO centers covering 19 provinces of China. A total of 648 patients were included in the study, including 491 (75.8%) males. There were 11 ECPR centers in 2017, and the number increased to 42 in 2020. The number of patients received ECPR increased from 33 in 2017 to 274 in 2020, and the survival rate increased from 24.2% to 33.6%. Neurological complications, renal replacement therapy, epinephrine dosage after ECMO, recovery of spontaneous circulation before ECMO, lactate clearance and shockable rhythm were risk factors independently associated with outcomes of whole process. Sex, recovery of spontaneous circulation before ECMO, lactate, shockable rhythm and causes of arrest were pre-ECMO risk factors independently affecting outcomes. Conclusions From January 2017 to March 2021, the numbers of ECPR centers and cases in mainland China increased gradually over time, as well as the survival rate. Pre-ECMO risk factors, especially recovery of spontaneous circulation before ECMO, shockable rhythm and lactate, are as important as post-ECMO management,. Abstract Background In recent years, with benefits from the continuous improvement of clinical technology and the advantage of fertility preservation, the application of embryo cryopreservation has been growing rapidly worldwide. However, amidst this growth, concerns about its safety persist. Numerous studies have highlighted the elevated risk of perinatal complications linked to frozen embryo transfer (FET), such as large for gestational age (LGA) and hypertensive disorders during pregnancy. Thus, it is imperative to explore the potential risk of embryo cryopreservation and its related mechanisms. Methods Given the strict ethical constraints on clinical samples, we employed mouse models in this study. Three experimental groups were established: the naturally conceived (NC) group, the fresh embryo transfer (Fresh-ET) group, and the FET group. Blastocyst formation rates and implantation rates were calculated post-embryo cryopreservation. The impact of FET on fetal growth was evaluated upon fetal and placental weight. Placental RNA-seq was conducted, encompassing comprehensive analyses of various comparisons (Fresh-ET vs. NC, FET vs. NC, and FET vs. Fresh-ET). Results Reduced rates of blastocyst formation and implantation were observed post-embryo cryopreservation. Fresh-ET resulted in a significant decrease in fetal weight compared to NC group, whereas FET reversed this decline. RNA-seq analysis indicated that the majority of the expression changes in FET were inherited from Fresh-ET, and alterations solely attributed to embryo cryopreservation were moderate. Unexpectedly, certain genes that showed alterations in Fresh-ET tended to be restored in FET. Further analysis suggested that this regression may underlie the improvement of fetal growth restriction in FET. The expression of imprinted genes was disrupted in both FET and Fresh-ET groups. Conclusion Based on our experimental data on mouse models, the impact of embryo cryopreservation is less pronounced than other in vitro manipulations in Fresh-ET. However, the impairment of the embryonic developmental potential and the gene alterations in placenta still suggested it to be a risky operation.

Abstract Background Wheat landraces are considered a valuable source of genetic diversity for breeding programs. It is useful to evaluate the genetic diversity in breeding studies such as marker-assisted selection (MAS), genome-wide association studies (GWAS), and genomic selection. In addition, constructing a core germplasm set that represents the genetic diversity of the entire variety set is of great significance for the efficient conservation and utilization of wheat landrace germplasms. Results To understand the genetic diversity in wheat landrace, 2,023 accessions in the Jiangsu Provincial Crop Germplasm Resource Bank were used to explore the molecular diversity and population structure using the Illumina 15 K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chip. These accessions were divided into five subpopulations based on population structure, principal coordinate and kinship analysis. A significant variation was found within and among the subpopulations based on the molecular variance analysis (AMOVA). Subpopulation 3 showed more genetic variability based on the different allelic patterns (Na, Ne and I). The M strategy as implemented in MStratv 4.1 software was used to construct the representative core collection. A core collection with a total of 311 accessions (15.37%) was selected from the entire landrace germplasm based on genotype and 12 different phenotypic traits. Compared to the initial landrace collections, the core collection displayed higher gene diversity (0.31) and polymorphism information content (PIC) (0.25), and represented almost all phenotypic variation. Conclusions A core collection comprising 311 accessions containing 100% of the genetic variation in the initial population was developed. This collection provides a germplasm base for effective management, conservation, and utilization of the variation in the original set.

Abstract Background Fish reproduction, development and growth are directly affected by temperature, investigating the regulatory mechanisms behind high temperature stress is helpful to construct a finer molecular network. In this study, we systematically analyzed the transcriptome and miRNA information of American shad (Alosa sapidissima) liver tissues at different cultivation temperatures of 24 ℃ (Low), 27 ℃ (Mid) and 30 ℃ (High) based on a high-throughput sequencing platform. Results The results showed that there were 1594 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 660 differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs) in the LowLi vs. MidLi comparison group, 473 DEGs and 84 DEMs in the MidLi vs. HighLi group, 914 DEGs and 442 DEMs in the LowLi vs. HighLi group. These included some important genes and miRNAs such as calr, hsp90b1, hsp70, ssa-miR-125a-3p, ssa-miR-92b-5p, dre-miR-15a-3p and novel-m1018-5p. The DEGs were mainly enriched in the protein folding, processing and export pathways of the endoplasmic reticulum; the target genes of the DEMs were mainly enriched in the focal adhesion pathway. Furthermore, the association analysis revealed that the key genes were mainly enriched in the metabolic pathway. Interestingly, we found a significant increase in the number of genes and miRNAs involved in the regulation of heat stress during the temperature change from 24 °C to 27 °C. In addition, we examined the tissue expression characteristics of some key genes and miRNAs by qPCR, and found that calr, hsp90b1 and dre-miR-125b-2-3p were significantly highly expressed in the liver at 27 ℃, while novel-m0481-5p, ssa-miR-125a-3p, ssa-miR-92b-5p, dre-miR-15a-3p and novel-m1018-5p had the highest expression in the heart at 30℃. Finally, the quantitative expression trends of 10 randomly selected DEGs and 10 DEMs were consistent with the sequencing data, indicating the reliability of the results. Conclusions In summary, this study provides some fundamental data for subsequent in-depth research into the molecular regulatory mechanisms of A. sapidissima response to heat stress, and for the selective breeding of high temperature tolerant varieties.

Abstract Clematis nannophylla is a perennial shrub of Clematis with ecological, ornamental, and medicinal value, distributed in the arid and semi-arid areas of northwest China. This study successfully determined the chloroplast (cp) genome of C. nannophylla, reconstructing a phylogenetic tree of Clematis. This cp genome is 159,801 bp in length and has a typical tetrad structure, including a large single-copy, a small single-copy, and a pair of reverse repeats (IRa and IRb). It contains 133 unique genes, including 89 protein-coding, 36 tRNA, and 8 rRNA genes. Additionally, 66 simple repeat sequences, 50 dispersed repeats, and 24 tandem repeats were found; many of the dispersed and tandem repeats were between 20–30 bp and 10–20 bp, respectively, and the abundant repeats were located in the large single copy region. The cp genome was relatively conserved, especially in the IR region, where no inversion or rearrangement was observed, further revealing that the coding regions were more conserved than the noncoding regions. Phylogenetic analysis showed that C. nannophylla is more closely related to C. fruticosa and C. songorica. Our analysis provides reference data for molecular marker development, phylogenetic analysis, population studies, and cp genome processes to better utilise C. nannophylla.

Abstract Background Addison’s disease and X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) (Addison’s-only) are two diseases that need to be identified. Addison’s disease is easy to diagnose clinically when only skin and mucosal pigmentation symptoms are present. However, X-ALD (Addison’s-only) caused by ABCD1 gene variation is ignored, thus losing the opportunity for early treatment. This study described two patients with initial clinical diagnosis of Addison’s disease. However, they rapidly developed neurological symptoms triggered by infection. After further genetic testing, the two patients were diagnosed with X-ALD. Methods We retrospectively analyzed X-ALD patients admitted to our hospital. Clinical features, laboratory test results, and imaging data were collected. Whole-exome sequencing was used in molecular genetics. Results Two patients were included in this study. Both of them had significantly increased adrenocorticotropic hormone level and skin and mucosal pigmentation. They were initially clinically diagnosed with Addison’s disease and received hydrocortisone treatment. However, both patients developed progressive neurological symptoms following infectious disease. Further brain magnetic resonance imaging was completed, and the results suggested demyelinating lesions. Molecular genetics suggested variations in the ABCD1 gene, which were c.109_110insGCCA (p.C39Pfs*156), c.1394–2 A > C (NM_000033), respectively. Therefore, the two patients were finally diagnosed with X-ALD, whose classification had progressed from X-ALD (Addison’s-only) to childhood cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy (CCALD). Moreover, the infection exacerbates the demyelinating lesions and accelerates the onset of neurological symptoms. Neither the two variation sites in this study had been previously reported, which extends the ABCD1 variation spectrum. Conclusions Patients with only symptoms of adrenal insufficiency cannot be simply clinically diagnosed with Addison’s disease. Being alert to the possibility of ABCD1 variation is necessary, and complete genetic testing is needed as soon as possible to identify X-ALD (Addison’s-only) early to achieve regular monitoring of the disease and receive treatment early. In addition, infection, as a hit factor, may aggravate demyelinating lesions of CCALD. Thus, patients should be protected from external environmental factors to delay the progression of cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy.

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the altered pathways and genes associated with freezing damage in human sperm during cryopreservation by multiomics analysis. Materials and Methods: Fifteen fresh human semen samples were collected for transcriptomic analysis, and another 5 fresh human semen samples were obtained for metabolomic analysis. For each semen sample, 1 mL was cryopreserved, and another 1 mL was left untreated for paired design. The results were then combined with previously published proteomic results to identify key genes/pathways. Results: Cryopreservation significantly reduced sperm motility and mitochondrial structure. Transcriptomic analysis revealed altered mitochondrial function, including changes in tRNA-methyltransferase activity and adenosine tri-phosphate/adenosine di-phosphate transmembrane transporter activity. Metabolomic analysis showed that the citrate cycle in mitochondria was significantly altered. Combining transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic analyses revealed 346 genes that were altered in at least two omics analyses. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis showed that metabolic pathways were significantly altered and strongly associated with mitochondria. Five genes were altered in all three omics analyses: COL11A1, COL18A1, LPCAT3, NME1, and NNT. Conclusions: Five genes were identified by multiomics analysis in human cryopreserved sperm. These genes might have specific functions in cryopreservation. Explorations of the functions of these genes will be helpful for sperm cryopreservation and sperm motility improvement or even for reproduction in the future.

Purpose: Numerous studies have produced conflicting findings regarding the efficacy of statins in prostate cancer treatment. Our objective was to examine the correlation between statin usage and clinical outcomes in Taiwanese men with de novo metastatic prostate cancer. Materials and Methods: We identified patients diagnosed with de novo metastatic prostate cancer from the Chang Gung Research Database spanning the years 2007 to 2020. To minimize confounding bias, we employed the inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) method. Clinical outcomes were assessed using IPTW-adjusted Kaplan-Meier curves. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was utilized to evaluate the association between mortality and clinical factors. Results: The study cohort comprised 1,716 statin users and 276 non-users. In order to compare the microstructures and tribological properties of films, pure Mo2N, pure MoS2, 3-layer and 13-layer MoS2/Mo2N gradient films were deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering. The crystalline structure, surface and cross-section morphologies, 3D surface topography, binding energy, hardness and tribological properties of films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), atom force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), nanoindenter, and wear tester, respectively. The results indicate that the preferred orientation of MoS2 in gradient films has changed. The surface and cross-section structures of gradient films become denser with increasing the number of gradient layers. Average surface roughness (Ra) of pure MoS2 film is the highest, and Ra of 13-layer film is the lowest. The binding energy of MoS2 in the composite layer of gradient film has changed. The hardness of gradient film is higher than that of MoS2 and lower than that of Mo2N. The wear resistance of gradient films is much better than that of pure MoS2, and this phenomenon is more obvious under high load conditions. The improvement in the wear resistance of gradient films is attributed to the increase of dense, hardness, H/E and H3/E2. In the initial stage of friction, the 3-layer gradient film can maintain low friction coefficient (≤0.15), which is attributed to the thick MoS2 surface layer. The wear resistance of 13-layer is much better than that of 3-layer gradient film, because it has higher hardness, higher H/E and H3/E2 than 3-layer gradient film.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the impact of preoperative chronic kidney disease (CKD) on the oncological outcomes of patients with upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) who underwent standard radical nephroureterectomy (RNU). Methods: A total of 1172 UTUC patients who received RNU at a single center in Taiwan between February 2005 and August 2019 were included. The patients were categorized into two groups based on their preoperative CKD stage: CKD stage ≤3 (811 patients) and CKD stage >3 (361 patients). The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated using the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) formula. The study investigated the oncological outcomes, including intravesical recurrence, non-urothelial recurrence, and cancer-specific mortality, stratified by preoperative CKD status. Results: The main findings indicated that UTUC patients with CKD stage >3 in Taiwan exhibited a higher proportion of females (p 3 and CKD stage ≤3 groups. The study also demonstrated that patients with concurrent bladder cancer and variant histology had higher rates of intravesical recurrence, non-urothelial recurrence, and cancer-specific mortality. The CKD stage >3 group exhibited lower rates of intravesical recurrence (p = 0.0014), higher rates of non-urothelial recurrence (p 3 exhibit distinct characteristics compared to the general population with urothelial carcinoma. They are associated with a non-smoking status, a higher proportion of females, and less aggressive pathological features. Additionally, CKD stage >3 can serve as a clinical indicator for intravesical and non-urothelial recurrence. Further investigation into molecular aspects and treatment modifications for these patients is warranted.

In this work, we demonstrate the feasibility of applying electric pulses to heal surface cracks on nickel-based alloy GH4169 under compressive load. There exists an incubation time for the onset of the healing of a crack, which is associated with local temperature at the crack tip. The crack size decreases with increasing the pulsing time at a constant healing rate prior to complete healing of the crack. Increasing compressive load accelerates the healing process. The electric pulsing leads to the formation of an influential zone surrounding the crack with the finest grain sizes in the healed crack and the coarsest grain sizes away from the influential zone. The indentation hardness increases with the increase the distance to the crack tip of the healed crack. A model of viscous flow in the crack channel is proposed for the crack healing. The resultant force on the crack faces due to the crack healing increases with the increase of the healing time and the decrease of the crack width.
