Abstract

During the early design stages of product-service systems (PSS), particular attention must be given to sustainability considerations to ensure the achievement of a sustainable PSS. However, there is a lack of decision-making support within existing design methods to help designers generating PSS solutions with reduced sustainability impact from the early design stages. To fill this gap, this paper elaborates on a decision support method coupling multi-criteria analysis and sustainability assessment, and considering PSS peculiarities. The aim of the method is to select PSS scenarios with the highest sustainability potential. Sustainability is assessed from multiple perspectives involving both the PSS actors’ points of view and sustainability pillars. The selection of the PSS design scenarios is supported by a multi-criteria analysis enabled by the ELECTRE I method. Furthermore, the paper elaborates on a case study around a PSS-oriented water-saving sanitary equipment intended for healthcare facilities. This provided some evidences of the applicability and relevance of the proposed method, which contributes ultimately to fostering sustainability integration within PSS design.

Abstract

Part 7: Safety and Collaboration Management; International audience; Organizations are increasingly working on business processes improvement to meet stakeholders’ requirement. Process engineering and improvement projects are challenged by identifying proper metrics to guide improvement effortsand mitigate process complexity. This latter is intuitively related to factors such as usability, modularity, reliability and maintainability. A process that is too complex is more likely to fail and produce costly quality problems. In a context of collaborative decision-making, complexity management must consider the expectations of several stakeholders, and the definition/use of suitable metricsis the starting point. The current paper identifiesandusesa set ofmetrics to enable the evaluation of process models. The proposed metric system is used within a case study highlighting the key role of modularity inmitigating processcomplexity.More generally, the results show how using the metric system can support complexity mitigation and therefore performance improvementin (re)engineered processes.

Abstract

Recent economic transformations have forced companies to redefine their value propositions, increasing traditional product offerings with supplementary services—the so-called Product-Service System (PSS). Among them, the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies is very common. However, the directions that companies are undertaking to offer new value to their customers in the Industry 4.0 have not yet been investigated in detail. Based on a focus group, this paper contributes to this understanding by identifying the main trajectories that would shape a future scenario in which PSS and Industry 4.0 would merge. In addition, future research directions addressing (a) the transformation of the PSS value chain into a PSS ecosystem, (b) the transformation inside a single company towards becoming a PSS provider, and (c) the digital transformation of the traditional PSS business model are identified.

Providing a comprehensive overview, it discusses the latest breakthroughs in operational, tactical, and strategic decision-making for PSS, leveraging data-driven processes, methodologies, and tools. Abstract

International audience; Digital technologies are encouraging manufacturing companies in their servitization process by accelerating the offer of integrated product and service to create new value and grow relationships with customers in the Industry 4.0 era. In parallel, digitalization and servitization research streams are merging and paving the way for the Smart Product-Service System (Smart PSS). By analyzing the concept of Smart PSS, this paper questions the convergence between digital and service orientations and considers how digital technologies are used to enable decisions along the PSS lifecycle and/or at different planning levels. Applying topic modeling, a semi-systematic literature review on the combination of digital technologies with PSS has highlighted five main research streams: PSS design, digital servitization, assessing tool for PSS decisions, knowledge management along the lifecycle, sustainability business models. The development over time of these research streams has been tracked leading to the definition of a new research agenda on Smart PSS.

Abstract

This work addresses the problem of developing control algorithms for the control of the aerodynamic lift of wind turbine blades using air injection, taking into account disturbances caused by turbulent perturbations. For this, a test bench is used where the lift of a 2D blade section in a wind tunnel can be controlled by a set of micro-jets close to the trailing edge. Through a continuous, local identification of the lift variations a model-free control that does not need any prior knowledge of the system is proposed. It allows the control of the flow of the micro-jets and stabilizes the lift around a tracking reference. The ability of the proposed control algorithm to track the lift reference when subjected to external perturbations, i.e., gusts, is discussed. In particular, this work demonstrates that the lift can be set to particular values using the proposed control strategy, and can be re-stabilized to pre-gust lift conditions. Experimental results illustrate globally the feasibility of such a control.

Abstract

International audience; Companies are seeking more and more to offer customized goods and services to customers to be able to satisfy their needs. Several methods emerged to fulfill the needs of customization without affecting the performance of the company. Modularity has been considered as an effective method to address the challenges regarding variety management in the product and service domain. It has been addressed in the product domain but rarely in the service domain. This paper aims to provide a method to modularize a service-oriented system that consists of products and services. The method uses a set of modularization criteria and clustering techniques to form service-oriented system modules (product and/or service modules). The output of the clustering process is evaluated using indicators to provide decision-makers with insights into potentially preferred clustering alternatives. A test case is presented in order to show the applicability of the method.

Abstract

International audience; The design of innovative offers involves deep collaboration between the provider and the customer to create higher value than in traditional offers. Product-Service Systems (PSS) are bundles of products and services and constitute innovative offers designed to fit complex customer needs. The academic literature on PSS development has a strong focus on the provider perspective, and only a few works address customer involvement in the process of value co-creation. This paper proposes a methodological framework composed of a customer view and a provider view, highlighting the interface between them, in which value co-creation takes place. The proposed framework aims at supporting the collaboration process between the customer and the provider during the entire PSS development. The framework has been built within a R&D project in a French company called Vibratec.

Abstract

International audience; Reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS) emerged in literature during the last two decades with the aim to respond to the rapid increase in product demand and variations. The implementation of such solutions in the industry is very recent and remains difficult. In this article, an analysis of the industrial requirements and challenges involving four key aspects of RDSS (reconfigurability, digitalization, servitization and sustainability) is based on semi-structured interviews conducted with representatives from the industry. Further, the identified requirements and challenges are compared to those extracted from an extensive literature review. The findings of the comparison are divided into technology and organization oriented issues and show a strong interconnection of the four key aspects: Digitalization offers possibilities for the implementation of sustainable systems, servitization creates the possibility for companies to achieve more flexibility through reconfigurable systems and the further development of RMS offers more possibilities for digitalization and thus a better adaptation to current requirements.

Abstract

This position paper introduces a Smart Innovation Environment for experimentation related to digital transformation projects, for the consolidation of a proposed "Digital Engineer" skill profile (with a business-oriented facet labelled as "Digital Innovator"). In the Internet of Things era, this profile implies the ability to perform both digital design and engineering activities, to semantically bridge multiple layers of abstraction and specificity - from business analysis down to cyber-physical engineering. In the paper's proposal, this integration is enabled by conceptual modelling methods and interoperable modelling tools, tailored to support the creation of Digital Twins for innovative digital business models. The architecture of the proposed environment is guided by a Design Research perspective - i.e., it is a treatment to an education "design problem" regarding the Digital Engineer skill profile in the IoT era. The proposed environment encompasses workspaces and toolkits are currently evaluated in "innovation corners" deployed across the OMiLAB ecosystem.

Abstract

PurposeThe paper proposes an innovative systemic method helping decision-makers to control servitization transition process, through decision process risk diagnosis.Design/methodology/approachThe proposed method is based on the modeling of decision processes and risk identification and analysis. This method was based on an action-research approach, in close relationship with two companies (SMEs). The paper develops the feasibility experiment at Automelec company.FindingsThe method was successfully implemented and delivered concrete diagnosis results.Research limitations/implicationsThe generalization of the applicability of the method needs to be tested on several different cases.Practical implicationsThe first practical implication is related to the efficiency of the method to help decision-makers in a servitization context to limit uncertainty and get a global view of the weaknesses of their decision-making process, it raises their awareness about servitization transition for their companies. Furthermore, the method also helps to explain the strategy of a servitization transition. It enhances the level of maturity of the decision process of the company, and can be used as a training/learning tool for managers.Social implicationsThe results brought by the research contribute to give the decision-making boards for organization living a servitization transition and especially SMEs a better control over the servitization decision process and related risks, which will increase the economic stability of the company and its vision over long, medium and short horizons. This will bring positive impact on the overall economic and social environment and networks of the servitized SME, and enhance the confidence of coworkers, subcontractors and clients.Originality/valueThe first originality of the paper is related to the new way of considering risk, not only as an analysis criterion but as the central driver in steering a strategic transition for the company, such as servitization. The second originality of the study is about assessing risk occurrence over a decision-making process through decision reliability and decision confidence.

International audience; Despite lots of advances on PSS design methods over the past ten years, this paper states that their larger use in industrial context remains confronted to a lack of integration among the diversity of methods and tools available and among the variety of concepts covered by PSS design. The paper aims at presenting a modelling approach and tool dedicated to PSS design which intends to contribute to a higher integration, starting with a first level of conceptual integration. The P3SM tool is presented and its utilization is illustrated by a real industrial case study in the context of industrial robotics. A discussion on the added-value of the modelling approach and on further perspectives is developed.

Abstract

International audience; Although the literature is full of research on the transition of industry towards Product-Service Systems (PSS), the question of how to effectively support PSS engineering is poorly addressed. The compelling need for decision support throughout the various stages of the engineering process is particularly challenging due to the inherent complexity of PSS. In this sense, visualisation and modelling at large have been put forth as promising means for supporting PSS engineering. This paper proposes a method for specifying a modelling language for PSS engineering, putting together PSS domain-specific knowledge and modelling concepts inherited from conceptual modelling and model-based engineering. It relies on a recursive transformation process of the underlying PSS meta-model using knowledge from case studies and the literature. The method has proven to be a practical means for gradual enrichment of the modelling language leading to successful experimentations in the industrial context.

Abstract

International audience; PSS offerings are characterized by the presence of uncertainties due to the lack of information, in the design stage of the offer, about future events that the decision makers will face. These uncertainties must be anticipated to validate the profitability of PSS projects. In this paper, an approach to assess uncertainty is presented, then applied to a study case. This approach is an integration of the classical uncertainty management framework together with the quantitative uncertainty assessment framework. In the first part of this article, a literature review on uncertainty identification and assessment in the PSS context is presented. Then, an uncertainty assessment approach is proposed, with the methods and tools to implement it. Finally, the authors describe the results of the application to an industrial case study.

Abstract

Part 15: Collaborative Decision-Making in Value Creation Networks; International audience; This paper presents a framework for addressing the challenge of economic value sharing among actors of Product-Service value networks. More specifically the framework is dedicated to the assessment of alternative collaborative value networks and their associated economic models, at the time of designing a product-service system (PSS). The framework includes three main components: modelling, simulation and uncertainty assessment. The framework is briefly presented as parts of its components were discussed in previous research. The paper provides an illustration with a design project of a PSS solution in the agro-alimentary industry, requiring a balanced configuration of collaborative value network.

Abstract

International audience; Product-Service Systems are increasingly emerging in response to market volatility and more demanding customer requirements. Their development process, however, is not as straightforward as for traditional physical goods. For instance, the configuration of a Product-Service System entails taking several factors into account, such as the points of view of the different actors in the value network. This paper proposes a methodological framework supported by modelling and simulation to evaluate the performance of different configurations of the value network, referred to as scenarios, and the impact of different input parameters within these scenarios. The proposed approach is illustrated by a case study which highlights the main drivers of a new innovative sector for sludge treatment.

Abstract

International audience; Companies are increasingly selling functionalities of integrated solutions of products and services instead of selling mere products. This integration of products and service solutions is known as Product Service Systems (PSS), which allows to maximize customer value and overcome increasing competition in the manufacturing sector. In this sense, PSS designers require adapted tools to support the design of sustainable solutions. This article aims to address this question by proposing a methodological framework for integrating sustainability considerations into the PSS design process. To this end a review of the peculiarities of the PSS design process was performed and which aims to explore potential ways of integrating sustainability considerations within PSS design. Several requirements have been drawn from PSS design and sustainability literature which contributed towards the formalization of a methodological framework supporting the design of sustainable PSS.

International audience; Due to the increased diversity in customer requirements, many manufacturers are in the process of evolving from mass production to mass customization (MC) whereby products and services are tailored to specific customer needs. Even though MC strategy was described decades ago, its implementation within industry is hindered by the partial understanding of its underlying philosophy and operational drivers. A central question to be dealt with for a successful MC implementation is how to balance between products and services variety and their induced complexity. Modularity is one of the commonly used means for dealing with such as question. While this concept has been widely discussed in product design and operations management literature at large, its applicability to service or product-service systems is only poorly addressed. This paper addresses the question of how to deal with the service modularity and how this can be exploited jointly with product modularity to modularize an offering, in a way to increase offering variety and improve internal company performance.

Part 8: Knowledge Based Engineering; International audience; Product-Service Systems (PSS) are one of the business innovation drivers in terms of increasing the value for the customer and for the actors involved in PSS provision. This paper reports on a framework for assessing the economic value out of PSS provision considering a multi-actor perspective. The originality of the proposed framework is twofold: enabling an attribution of the costs (and revenues) to the actors involved in the value network, and considering the peculiarities of the use phase in cost and revenue calculation, i.e. impact of PSS contract duration and of the intensification of the product use through take-back systems.

Abstract

International audience; Increasing customer demands for individualized solutions has a major impact on the manufacturing sector. Companies are confronted to producing high volumes in order to meet market demand while customizing their offering to meet specific customers’ requirements. One of the subsequent major challenges of this situation is to cope with the high offering variety while ensuring higher performance within the production system and supply chain of the solution provider. This paper deals with the impact of integrating products and services on the variety-induced complexity. Based on a consistent literature review, a model is proposed to conceptualize the main drivers of variety management of product and service offering. The ultimate objective of the model is to support decision-makers in the identification of balances between customer satisfaction and supply chain performance.

Abstract

International audience; Over the recent years, the growing research interest in Product-Service Systems (PSS) design and development methods has generated a large background of theoretical knowledge, conceptual methods and application case studies. After analysing the research gaps emerging for these advances, this paper propose a new integrated PSS design method, which intends to associate to 3 key contributions: an increased degree of integration among all components of the method; a higher applicability in industrial companies; specific added-value in balancing economic models of the stakeholders of the PSS delivery network. The proposition is based on extending the Functional Analysis (FA) approach (NF X 50-100), which is commonly used in product engineering, in order to cover the requirements for PSS design and development. The paper intends to provide a conceptual justification, then an industrial verification, of the pertinence and applicability of the method proposed. The industrial experimentation is developed on an industrial PSS case study dealing with the design of an industrial cleaning solution.

Abstract

International audience; Customers’ individual preferences are calling for more variety of the firms offerings. Faced with this situation, firms endeavor to meet customer requirements while reducing their costs and impact on environment in order to remain competitive. Further on, achieving such a goal entails various issues that need to be tackled such as the multiple performance drivers and criteria relating to sustainability and variety. Accordingly, tradeoffs need to be defined and balanced between such heterogeneous criteria in order to facilitate the decision making process on variety levels with regards to sustainability impact. These tradeoffs should involve decision makers so as to reflect firm priorities and takes into account its realm. This paper proposes an approach supporting the decision making process on variety delivered to the market while taking into account sustainability criteria. More specifically, the approach uses performance indicators which are calculated by LCA based tools, then applies weightings, and finally computes the expected variety levels for a given demand data. The paper highlights the impact of variety steering on environmental and economic sustainability indicators.

Abstract

International audience; This paper addresses the needs of generic and shared PSS conceptual modelling approaches. The development of conceptual models for PSS is considered in this research as the basis to develop an integrated approach for PSS design. The objective of the paper is to present a generic PSS-dedicated meta-model, resulting from a procedure of integration of various conceptual models developed in the scientific literature of PSS design methods. The procedure of knowledge extraction and integration is explained and the generic PSS meta-model is presented, together with an associated modelling procedure. These results constitute a path forward towards more generic PSS design methods.

Abstract

International audience; This paper reports a research work piece developed in collaboration with the semiconductor wafer production company: STMicroelectronics. This collaborative research programme aimed at implementing statistical methods, so as to improve business decisions focusing on capacity planning for information technology. The current paper presents the specification, and experimentation of a method dedicated to managing the need to integrate rigorously complex contextualisation factors, when developing statistical-based Decision Support Systems (DSS). The key challenge is to increase the end-user acceptance and success rate for DSS developments. To ensure the successful integration of DSS within the user environment, the paper formalises a so-called ‘Contextualisation process’, integrated within a larger decision-aid development framework. This Contextualisation process is specified with three methodological components, respectively ‘Qualitative Contextualisation’, ‘Statistical Modelling and Formalisation’ and ‘User Integration’. This approach is applied by STMicroelectronics, to a case study focusing on a project of change management for the infrastructure of the Information System. Based on the demonstration of the case study results, the added-value of the Contextualisation process are discussed and further perspectives for applied research in DSS are drawn.
