This article introduces the 'Environmental Scan' as answer to the question of hidden biases in digital heritage collections. Its substantive focus is digitized nineteenth-century British provincial newspapers, and in particular the JISC corpus, a popular, publicly-funded resource for scholars. While multiple papers have meticulously investigated the genesis of such newspaper collections, in the process highlighting the often unacknowledged politics of collection, preservation and dissemination via microfilm and now digitization, our aim is to explore questions of representativeness and bias in new ways by enriching computational analysis of digital corpora with the historical insights that can be derived from a contemporaneous reference source: namely, the Victorian newspaper press directories. We present a new dataset for the task of toponym resolution in digitized historical newspapers in English. It consists of 343 annotated articles from newspapers based in four different locations in England (Manchester, Ashton-under-Lyne, Poole and Dorchester), published between 1780 and 1870. The articles have been manually annotated with mentions of places, which are linked—whenever possible—to their corresponding entry on Wikipedia. The dataset consists of 3,364 annotated toponyms, of which 2,784 have been provided with a link to Wikipedia. The dataset is published in the British Library shared research repository, and is especially of interest to researchers working on improving semantic access to historical newspaper content. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to profile the physiological characteristics of amateur boxers using a battery of tests designed to assess the physiological and physical demands required for performance. Fifteen junior amateur (age 14.9 ± 2.0 years; stature 164 ± 12 cm; body mass 50.9 ± 11.3 kg) and sixteen senior amateur boxers (n = 16; age 20.5 ± 4.0 years; stature 174 ± 9 cm; body mass 65.2 ± 10.7 kg) provided informed consent to participate in the study. Body composition, squat jump (SJ), countermovement jump (CMJ), 5- and 10 m sprint (5SP/10SP), press up (PU), right and left medicine-ball single-arm throws (MBR, MBL), repeated sprint test (RST) and Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test level 1 (YY) were performed. The likelihood (% chance) of between-group differences were assessed using a magnitude based approach, standardised-difference score (Cohen's d) and 90% confidence intervals [CI]. Linear regression (r) was used to examine the association between variables. Results: Senior boxers outperformed (79 to 99% chance) junior counterparts in PU, YY, CMJ, SJ, 10SP, MBL and MBR tests (d ≥ 0.50 [-0.34 to 1.61]). There were very large (r 0.70) correlations between fat free mass, upper-and lower body lean mass and medicine ball throw distance. There were large correlations (r 0.50 to 0.69) between medicine ball throw distance and CMJ, SJ, PU, 5SP and 10SP. Conclusions: A simple and time-effective test battery was able to differentiate performance between junior and amateur boxers. Demand response programs help stabilize the electricity grid by providing monetary stimulus to consumers if they regulate their power consumption following market requirements. Regulation service, a market that requires participants to regulate power by following a signal updated every few seconds, is particularly beneficial to HPC data centers since data centers are capable of increasing/decreasing power consumption owing to the flexibility in running workloads and the availability of power control mechanisms. While prior works have explored how data centers can provide regulation service reserves, Quality-of-Service (QoS) provisioning for the jobs running at the data centers has not been considered. In this work, we propose an Adaptive policy with QoS Assurance that enables data centers to participate in regulation service programs with assurance on job QoS. Our policy regulates data center power through job scheduling and server power capping. QoS assurance is achieved by applying a queueing-theoretic result to our job scheduling strategy. We evaluate our policy by experiments on a real cluster. Our results demonstrate that the proposed policy reduces electricity costs by 25-56% while providing QoS assurance. On the other hand, the baseline policies cannot meet QoS constraints in 9 of the 14 workload traces tested.
