Sleep disturbances are strongly associated with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD and mTBI have been linked to alterations in white matter (WM) microstructure, but whether poor sleep quality has a compounding effect on WM remains largely unknown. We evaluated sleep and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) data from 180 male post-9/11 veterans diagnosed with (1) PTSD (n = 38), (2) mTBI (n = 25), (3) comorbid PTSD+mTBI (n = 94), and (4) a control group with neither PTSD nor mTBI (n = 23). We compared sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, PSQI) between groups using ANCOVAs and calculated regression and mediation models to assess associations between PTSD, mTBI, sleep quality, and WM. Veterans with PTSD and comorbid PTSD+mTBI reported poorer sleep quality than those with mTBI or no history of PTSD or mTBI (p = 0.012 to <0.001). Poor sleep quality was associated with abnormal WM microstructure in veterans with comorbid PTSD+mTBI (p < 0.001). Most importantly, poor sleep quality fully mediated the association between greater PTSD symptom severity and impaired WM microstructure (p < 0.001). Our findings highlight the significant impact of sleep disturbances on brain health in veterans with PTSD+mTBI, calling for sleep-targeted interventions.

Landscape fragmentation and defaunation have major impacts on plant dispersal and dynamics. However, whether the impact of such perturbations on seed dispersal and recruitment change in sign and strength across habitats and spatial scales, and whether they amplify or buffer each other, remains largely unknown. To evaluate, for the first time, the joint impact of fragmentation and defaunation on seed dispersal effectiveness (SDE) across spatial scales (e.g., short- and long-distance seed dispersal), we utilized the long-term field data of a mammal-dispersed tree (Pyrus bourgaeana) in a spatially explicit individual-based model. By means of simulation experiments, we evaluated the effects of different levels of landscape fragmentation and defaunation on SDE and tree recruitment. Our simulation results revealed that the direction and magnitude of the fragmentation effect on SDE depended on its strength (mild, severe) and the spatial scale considered. Severe fragmentation decreased SDE for short- and intermediate-distance seed dispersal. Interestingly, mild and severe fragmentation increased SDE of long-distance seed dispersal, suggesting a positive effect of such perturbations (i.e., an increase in the proportion of successful long-distance dispersal events). Though defaunation had a consistently negative effect on overall SDE, its magnitude was highly species- and spatial–scale-dependent. The impact of defaunation on seed dispersal distance was also species-specific: the proportion of long-distance dispersal increased under total badger (Meles meles) defaunation but decreased under total fox (Vulpes vulpes) defaunation. A pervasive integration of seed dispersal distance into the SDE framework is essential to most comprehensively understand the scale-dependent nature of human activity impacts on plant dynamics. Although it is well recognized that the strength of plant–herbivore interactions can vary with the plant sex, the distance, and the density of conspecific neighbors, no study has yet assessed their combined influence. Here, we filled this knowledge gap by focusing on the dioecious palm Chamaerops humilis L., and its two main herbivores, the invasive moth Paysandisia archon Burmeister and the feral goat Capra hircus L. We evaluated levels and spatial patterns of herbivory, as well as those of plant size and number of inflorescences in two palm populations in Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). Our spatial point pattern analyses revealed that palms not affected by moth herbivory or goat florivory were spatially aggregated, goats fed more strongly upon inflorescences in palms with more neighbors, but they consumed more leaves in isolated palms. Interestingly, we could reveal for the first time that plant sex is a key plant trait modulating neighborhood effects. For instance, whereas aggregated female palms experienced lower intensity of goat florivory than isolated ones, male palms showed the opposite pattern. Palm size and number of inflorescences also showed sex-related differences, suggesting that sexual dimorphism is a key driver of the observed neighborhood effects on herbivory. Our study highlights the importance of considering relevant plant traits such as sex when investigating plant neighborhood effects, calling for further research to fully understand the dynamics governing plant–herbivore interactions in dioecious systems.

Interspecific ecological interactions are inherently context-dependent. They may vary in both magnitude and sign depending on the biotic and abiotic conditions, depicting a mutualism–antagonism continuum. However, how population abundances and the activity of interacting species modulate these interactions remains underexplored. Here, we chose the interaction between the Mediterranean palm Chamaerops humilis and the feral goat Capra hircus in Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). We selected three study plots with low, intermediate and high intensities of goat activity where we characterized palm distribution, seed rain, seed predation and early palm recruitment during two consecutive years. Since goats can cause both costs (e.g. florivory) and benefits (e.g. seed dispersal) to C. humilis performance, we investigated the following three questions: 1) does the spatial distribution of adult palms vary depending on the intensity of goat activity? 2) Does the intensity of goat activity influence seed rain and its potential spatial association with adult palms? 3) To what extent does the intensity of goat activity determine post-dispersal events such as seed predation and seedling emergence? We found that adult palms showed a more clumped and complex distribution (double-cluster process) in plots with low and intermediate goat activity compared to that with high goat activity (simple-cluster process). In the low goat activity plot, dispersed seeds were spatially aggregated around adult palms, showing twice as much insect-seed predation and nearly three times lower seed germination success than those in the intermediate goat activity plot. Palm seed dispersal and recruitment were almost nil in the high goat activity plot due to heavy consumption of palm inflorescences and developing fruits by goats. Developers proposing new machine learning for health (ML4H) tools often pledge to match or even surpass the performance of existing tools, yet the reality is usually more complicated. Reliable deployment of ML4H to the real world is challenging as examples from diabetic retinopathy or Covid-19 screening show. We envision an integrated framework of algorithm auditing and quality control that provides a path towards the effective and reliable application of ML systems in healthcare. In this editorial, we give a summary of ongoing work towards that vision and announce a call for participation to the special issue Machine Learning for Health: Algorithm Auditing & Quality Control in this journal to advance the practice of ML4H auditing.

The analysis of the spatial phylogenetic and phenotypic structure of plant communities can provide insight into the underlying processes and interactions governing their assembly, and how these may change during plant ontogeny. We used point pattern analysis to find out if saplings and adult plants are surrounded by phylogenetically and phenotypically more similar or more dissimilar neighbours than expected by chance, and whether these associations change from the sapling to the adult stage. To this end, we combined information on the phylogenetic structure and eight phenotypic traits of 15 woody plant species in two Mediterranean mixed forests of southeastern Spain. At the community level, we found that the sapling bank at both sites did not show phylogenetic or phenotypic spatial patterns, but adults showed phylogenetic clustering (i.e. heterospecific neighbours were more similar than expected). At the species level, we found frequently repulsive patterns in the sapling bank of less abundant species (i.e. heterospecific sapling or adult neighbours were more dissimilar than expected) in both, phylogenetic and phenotypic analyses. For the adult stage, we found phylogenetic attraction (i.e. more similar neighbours) in just one species and phenotypic clustering in four species. The processes driving the assembly of the communities of saplings and adults leave detectable signals in the spatial phylogenetic and phenotypic structure of our two forest communities. Our findings reinforce the existence of ontogenetic shifts in the mechanisms involved in plant community assembly. Facilitation between phylogenetically distant and phenotypically divergent species favours the recruitment of less abundant species. However, processes acting later in the ontogeny ameliorate the competition between close relatives and determine the spatial structure of adult plants. Contemporary defaunation has profound ecological consequences ranging from local or even global co-extinctions of interacting species to the loss of ecosystem functions and services critical for humanity. Other components of global change (climate change, introduced pests, land use changes) are also harming ecosystem functioning by augmenting tree mortality worldwide. Defaunation and increased tree mortality often coincide in many human-altered ecosystems but whether they interact, leading to non-additive effects on ecosystem functioning, remains largely unknown. However, under some ecological circumstances, the decline or extirpation of one species due to defaunation can be neutralized by increases in the abundance of some functionally similar species (i.e. ‘density compensation’). We combined long-term field data with individual-based modelling to investigate the potential interactive effects of seed disperser loss, increased tree mortality and density compensation on seed dispersal in a heterogeneous landscape. Our simulation experiments showed that both stressors markedly limit not only the quantity of seed dispersal but also its quality since the impact on seed dispersal strongly varied among habitat types that differ strikingly in suitability for tree establishment. Density compensation had a marked positive effect on seed dispersal which, however, was largely limited under increased tree mortality. The combined negative effects of defaunation and increased tree mortality on seed dispersal were lower than the expected additive effect. This highlights the need to account for the joint operation of multiple stressors to accurately predict the impacts of global change on the link between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning

Stochasticity is a core component of ecology, as it underlies key processes that structure and create variability in nature. Despite its fundamental importance in ecological systems, the concept is often treated as synonymous with unpredictability in community ecology, and studies tend to focus on single forms of stochasticity rather than taking a more holistic view. This has led to multiple narratives for how stochasticity mediates community dynamics. Here, we present a framework that describes how different forms of stochasticity (notably demographic and environmental stochasticity) combine to provide underlying and predictable structure in diverse communities. This framework builds on the deep ecological understanding of stochastic processes acting at individual and population levels and in modules of a few interacting species. We support our framework with a mathematical model that we use to synthesize key literature, demonstrating that stochasticity is more than simple uncertainty. Rather, stochasticity has profound and predictable effects on community dynamics that are critical for understanding how diversity is maintained. We propose next steps that ecologists might use to explore the role of stochasticity for structuring communities in theoretical and empirical systems, and thereby enhance our understanding of community dynamics.

[Background and Aims] Nursery pollination is a highly specialized interaction in which pollinators breed inside plant reproductive structures. Pollinator occupancy of host plants often depends on plant location, flowering synchrony and sex. The nursery pollination system between the dioecious dwarf palm Chamaerops humilis (Arecaceae) and the host-specific palm flower weevil Derelomus chamaeropsis was investigated. For the first time, sex, flowering synchrony and spatial distribution of plants was related to the occupancy probability and the abundance of D. chamaeropsis larvae, important traits influencing both pollinator and plant fitness., [Methods] During the flowering season, all inflorescences in anthesis were counted every 12 d and a flowering synchrony index was calculated taking into account all possible correlations with generalized linear mixed models. To analyse the spatial structure of plants, larva occupancy and abundance, different techniques of spatial point pattern analysis were used., [Key results] In total, 5986 larvae in 1063 C. humilis inflorescences were recorded over three consecutive seasons. Male inflorescences showed a higher presence and abundance of weevil larvae than females, but interestingly approx. 30 % of the females held larvae. Also, larvae occurred mainly in highly synchronous plants with a low number of inflorescences, perhaps because those plants did not lead to a resource dilution effect. There was no evidence of spatial patterns in larva occupancy or abundance at any spatial scale, suggesting high dispersal ability of adult weevil., [Conclusions] The results in a nursery-pollinated dioecious palm demonstrate that plant sex, flowering display and flowering synchrony act as additive forces influencing the presence and abundance of the specialized pollinator larvae. Contradicting previous results, clear evidence that female dwarf palms also provide rewarding oviposition sites was found, and thus the plant 'pays' for the pollination services. The findings highlight that plant local aggregation is not always the main determinant of pollinator attraction, whereas flower traits and phenology could be critical in specialized plant-pollinator interactions.

Increasing land abandonment in many areas of the world presents an opportunity for ecosystem recovery, which is often driven by seed dispersal by vertebrate frugivores. However, we are far from understanding the most effective way of using common management actions (i.e. planting fruiting trees) to stimulate animal seed dispersal and thus the restoration of human-altered abandoned habitats. To investigate how to stimulate animal seed dispersal, we combined long-term field data with individual-based, spatially explicit simulation models. We used our approach to assess the effectiveness of contrasting Iberian pear Pyrus bourgaeana planting strategies in enhancing restoration of abandoned lands through seed dispersal by red foxes Vulpes vulpes and Eurasian badgers Meles meles in the Doñana World Biosphere Reserve (South West Spain). Our simulation results indicate that planting trees in an aggregated fashion is less efficient in terms of seed arrival than planting them regularly or randomly. For aggregated planted trees, the increase in the area of the oldfield that received seeds was only 7%–9% compared to the baseline scenario of no intervention, whereas for regularly distributed planted trees the increment was up to 40%. Doubling the number of planted P. bourgaeana trees appeared cost-effective for regular and random tree distributions, but not for the aggregated one. For example, while doubling the number of trees planted regularly leads up to 12% increase in the number of seeds arriving into the oldfield, no increment on the number of arrived seeds was detected when trees were planted aggregately. Synthesis and applications. Choosing the spatial distribution and density of planted trees in abandoned lands depends on a number of ecological and socio-economical factors. The oxidative addition reaction of ditellurides R₂Te₂ [R = ⁿBu, Ph, Th (2-thienyl, C4H3S)] to [Pt(η²-nb)(dppn)] (nb = norbornene, dppn = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphano)naphthalene) was found to afford [Pt(TeR)₂(dppn)] [R = ⁿBu (1), Ph (2), Th (3)] and [Pt(TeR)(R)(dppn)] [R = Ph (4), Th (5)] as a result of the cleavage of the Te-Te or C-Te bond, respectively. The reactions and the product distributions were monitored by 31P{1H} NMR spectroscopy. The spectral interpretation was assisted by the high-yield preparation of [Pt(TePh)₂(dppn)] (2) and [Pt(TeTh)₂(dppn)] (3) by ligand exchange reactions from [PtCl₂(dppn)], and by the crystal structure determinations and spectral characterizations of 2 and 3. Two series of reactions were carried out both at room temperature and at −80 °C. One involved the addition of the toluene solution of R₂Te₂ to that of [Pt(η²-nb)(dppn)], and the other the addition of [Pt(η²-nb)(dppn)] solution to the R₂Te₂ solution. The oxidative addition of ⁿBu₂Te₂ to [Pt(η²-nb)(dppn)] yielded solely [Pt(TenBu)₂(dppn)]. In case of Ph₂Te₂ and Th₂Te₂, the reaction of equimolar amounts of ditelluride and [Pt(η²-nb)(dppn)] afforded only [Pt(TeR)(R)(dppn)] (R = Ph, Th), but when an excess of R₂Te₂ was used, the addition of [Pt(η²-nb)(dppn)] to the ditelluride resulted in the formation of a mixture of [Pt(TeR)₂(dppn)] and [Pt(TeR)(R)(dppn)] with the latter the main component. An excess of R₂Te₂ and the lowering of the temperature favoured the formation of [Pt(TeR)₂(dppn)]. The reaction energetics in toluene was calculated at revPBE/def2-TZVP(-f) level of theory. The increase of the electron withdrawing nature of the organic substituent rendered [Pt(TeR)(R)(dppn)] increasingly stable with respect to [Pt(TeR)₂(dppn)]. The computation of the energy profiles of the likely pathways of the oxidative addition indicated that concurrent formation of [Pt(TeR)₂(dppn)] and [Pt(TeR)(R)(dppn)] (R = Ph, Th) may be more likely than the formation of the latter due to the de
