In two dimensions, intrinsic second-order topological insulators (SOTIs) are characterized by topological corner states that emerge at the intersections of distinct edges with reversed mass signs, enforced by spatial symmetries. Here, we present a comprehensive investigation within the class BDI to clarify the symmetry conditions ensuring the presence of intrinsic SOTIs in two dimensions. We reveal that the (anti-)commutation relationship between spatial symmetries and chiral symmetry is a reliable indicator of intrinsic corner states. Through first-principles calculations, we identify several ideal candidates within carbon-based polymorphic graphyne structures for realizing intrinsic SOTIs under sublattice approximation. Furthermore, we show that the corner states in these materials persist even in the absence of sublattice approximation. Our findings not only deepen the understanding of higher-order topological phases but also open new pathways for realizing topological corner states that are readily observable.

The optical conductivity of the new Dirac semimetal candidate Ir$_2$In$_8$Se is measured in a frequency range from 40 to 30000 cm$^{-1}$ at temperatures from 300 K down to 10 K. The measurement reveals that the compound is a low carrier density metal. We find that the real part of the conductivity $\sigma_1(\omega)$ is linear in frequency over a broad range from 500 to 4000 cm$^{-1}$ at 300 K and varies slightly with cooling. This linearity strongly suggests the presence of three-dimensional linear electronic bands with band crossings near the Fermi level. Band structure calculations indicate the presence of type-II Dirac points. By comparing our data with the optical conductivity computed from the band structure, we conclude that the observed linear dependence mainly originates from the Dirac cones and the transition between the Dirac cones and the next lower bands. In addition, a weak energy gap feature is resolved below the charge density wave phase transition temperature in reflectivity spectra. An enhanced structure arising from the imperfect Fermi surface nesting is identified in the electronic susceptibility function, suggesting a Fermi surface nesting driven instability.

Looking for new materials with Dirac points has been a fascinating subject of research. Here we report the growth, crystal structure, and band structure of HfGe0.92Te single crystals, featuring three different types of Dirac points. HfGe0.92Te crystalizes in a nonsymmorphic tetragonal space group P4/nmm (No. 129), having square Ge-atom plane with vacancies about 8%. Despite the vacancies on Ge site, the Dirac nodal line composed of conventional Dirac points vulnerable to spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is observed using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, accompanied with the robust Dirac line protected by the nonsymmorphic symmetry against both SOC and vacancies. Specially, spin-orbit Dirac points (SDPs) originated from the surface formed under SOC are hinted to exist according to our experiments and calculations. Quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) characters are observed and further confirmed by angular-resolved magnetoresistance. HfGe0.92Te is a good candidate to explore exotic topological phases or topological properties with three different types of Dirac points and a promising candidate to realize 2D SDPs., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

We have investigated the quasiparticle dynamics and collective excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional material ZrTe$_5$ using ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Our time-domain results reveal two coherent oscillations having extremely low energies of $\hbar\omega_1\sim$0.33 meV (0.08 THz) and $\hbar\omega_2\sim$1.9 meV (0.45 THz), which are softened as the temperature approaches two different critical temperatures ($\sim$54 K and $\sim$135 K). We attribute these two collective excitations to the amplitude mode of charge density wave instabilities in ZrTe$_5$ with tremendously small nesting wave vectors. Furthermore, scattering with the $\hbar\omega_2$ mode may result in a peculiar quasiparticle decay process with a timescale of $\sim$1-2 ps below the transition temperature $T^*$ ($\sim$135 K). Our findings provide pivotal information for studying the fluctuating order parameters and their associated quasiparticle dynamics in various low-dimensional topological systems and other materials.

The interplay between various symmetries and electronic bands topology is one of the core issues for topological quantum materials. Spontaneous magnetism, which leads to the breaking of time-reversal symmetry, has been proven to be a powerful approach to trigger various exotic topological phases. In this work, utilizing the combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy and first-principles calculations, we present the direct evidence on the realization of the long-sought spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking induced topological phase transition in soft ferromagnetic EuB$_6$. We successfully disentangle the bulk band structure from complicated surface states, and reveal the hallmark band inversion occurring between two opposite-parity bulk bands below the phase transition temperature. Besides, our magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy result confirms the simultaneous formation of magnetic domains in EuB$_6$, implying the intimate link between the topological phase transition and broken time-reversal symmetry therein. While condensed matter systems host both Fermionic and Bosonic quasi-particles, reliably predicting and empirically verifying topological states is only mature for Fermionic electronic structures, leaving topological Bosonic excitations sporadically explored. This is unfortunate, as Bosonic systems such a phonons offer the opportunity to assess spinless band structures where nodal lines can be realized without invoking special additional symetries to protect against spin-orbit coupling. Here we combine first-principles calculations and meV-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering to demonstrate the first realization of parity-time reversal ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry protected helical nodal lines in the phonon spectrum of MoB$_{2}$. This structure is unique to phononic systems as the spin-orbit coupling present in electronic systems tends to lift the degeneracy away from high-symmetry locations. Our study establishes a protocol to accurately identify topological Bosonic excitations, opening a new route to explore exotic topological states in crystalline materials.

Connate topological superconductor (TSC) combines topological surface states with nodeless superconductivity in a single material, achieving effective $p$-wave pairing without interface complication. By combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and $in$-$situ$ molecular beam epitaxy, we studied the momentum-resolved superconductivity in $\beta$-$\rm{Bi_2Pd}$ film. We found that the superconducting gap of topological surface state ($\Delta_{TSS} \sim$ 3.8 meV) is anomalously enhanced from its bulk value ($\Delta_b \sim$ 0.8 meV). The ratio of $2\Delta_{TSS}/k_BT_c \sim14.2$, is substantially larger than the BCS value. By measuring $\beta$-$\rm{Bi_2Pd}$ bulk single crystal as a comparison, we clearly observed the upward-shift of chemical potential in the film. In addition, a concomitant increasing of surface weight on the topological surface state was revealed by our first principle calculation, suggesting that the Dirac-fermion-mediated parity mixing may cause this anomalous superconducting enhancement. Our results establish $\beta$-$\rm{Bi_2Pd}$ film as a unique case of connate TSCs with a highly enhanced topological superconducting gap, which may stabilize Majorana zero modes at a higher temperature., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

We report magnetic, transport, neutron diffraction, and muon spin rotation data showing that Pb$_2$CoOsO$_6$, a newly synthesized metallic double-perovskite with a centrosymmetric space group at room temperature, exhibits a continuous second-order phase transition at 45 K to a magnetically ordered state with a non-centrosymmetric space group. The absence of inversion symmetry is very uncommon in metals, particularly metallic oxides. In contrast to the recently reported ferroelectric-like structural transition in LiOsO$_3$, the phase transition in Pb$_2$CoOsO$_6$ is driven by a long-range collinear antiferromagnetic order, with propagation vector $\textbf{k} = (\frac{1}{2},0,\frac{1}{2})$, which relieves the frustration associated with the symmetry of themagnetic exchanges. In condensed matter systems, chiral topological nodes are robust band crossing points in momentum space that carry nonzero Chern numbers. The chirality is manifested by the presence of surface Fermi arcs connecting the projections of nodes with opposite Chern numbers. In addition to the well-known Weyl nodes, theorists have proposed several other types of chiral topological nodes in condensed matter systems, but the direct experimental evidence of their existence is still lacking. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we reveal two types of new chiral nodes, namely the spin-1 nodes and charge-2 Dirac nodes, at the band crossing points near the Fermi level in CoSi, the projections of which on the (001) surface are connected by topologically protected surface Fermi arcs. As these chiral nodes in CoSi are enforced at the Brillouin zone (BZ) center and corner by the crystalline symmetries, the surface Fermi arcs connecting their projections form a non-contractible path traversing the entire (001) surface BZ, in sharp contrast to pairs of Weyl nodes with small separation. As a fascinating topological phase of matter, Weyl semimetals host chiral fermions with distinct chiralities and spin textures. Optical excitations involving those chiral fermions can induce exotic carrier responses, and in turn lead to novel optical phenomena. Here, we discover strong coherent chiral terahertz emission from the Weyl semimetal TaAs and demonstrate unprecedented manipulation over its polarization on a femtosecond timescale. Such polarization control is achieved via the colossal ultrafast photocurrents in TaAs arising from the circular or linear photogalvanic effect. We unravel that the chiral ultrafast photocurrents are attributed to the large band velocity changes when the Weyl fermions are excited from the Weyl bands to the high-lying bands. The photocurrent generation is maximized at near-IR frequency range close to 1.5 eV. Our findings provide an entirely new design concept for creating chiral photon sources using quantum materials and open up new opportunities for developing ultrafast opto-electronics using Weyl physics.

Condensed matter systems have now become a fertile ground to discover emerging topological quasi-particles with symmetry protected modes. While many studies have focused on Fermionic excitations, the same conceptual framework can also be applied to bosons yielding new types of topological states. Motivated by the recent theoretical prediction of double-Weyl phonons in transition metal monosilicides [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 016401 (2018)], we directly measured the phonon dispersion in parity-breaking FeSi using inelastic x-ray scattering. By comparing the experimental data with theoretical calculations, we make the first observation of double-Weyl points in FeSi, which will be an ideal material to explore emerging Bosonic excitations and its topologically non-trivial properties., Comment: 5 pages and 4 figures

While recent advances in band theory and sample growth have expanded the series of extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) semimetals in transition metal dipnictides $TmPn_2$ ($Tm$ = Ta, Nb; $Pn$ = P, As, Sb), the experimental study on their electronic structure and the origin of XMR is still absent. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with first-principles calculations and magnetotransport measurements, we performed a comprehensive investigation on MoAs$_2$, which is isostructural to the $TmPn_2$ family and also exhibits quadratic XMR. We resolve a clear band structure well agreeing with the predictions. Intriguingly, the unambiguously observed Fermi surfaces (FSs) are dominated by an open-orbit topology extending along both the [100] and [001] directions in the three-dimensional Brillouin zone. We further reveal the trivial topological nature of MoAs$_2$ by bulk parity analysis. Based on these results, we examine the proposed XMR mechanisms in other semimetals, and conclusively ascribe the origin of quadratic XMR in MoAs$_2$ to the carriers motion on the FSs with dominant open-orbit topology, innovating in the understanding of quadratic XMR in semimetals., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Topological Dirac and Weyl semimetals not only host quasiparticles analogous to the elementary fermionic particles in high-energy physics, but also have nontrivial band topology manifested by exotic Fermi arcs on the surface. Recent advances suggest new types of topological semimetals, in which spatial symmetries protect gapless electronic excitations without high-energy analogy. Here we observe triply-degenerate nodal points (TPs) near the Fermi level of WC, in which the low-energy quasiparticles are described as three-component fermions distinct from Dirac and Weyl fermions. We further observe the surface states whose constant energy contours are pairs of Fermi arcs connecting the surface projection of the TPs, proving the nontrivial topology of the newly identified semimetal state., Comment: 4 figures

We report a polarized Raman scattering study of non-symmorphic topological insulator KHgSb with hourglass-like electronic dispersion. Supported by theoretical calculations, we show that the lattice of the previously assigned space group $P6_3/mmc$ (No. 194) is unstable in KHgSb. While we observe one of two calculated Raman active E$_{2g}$ phonons of space group $P6_3/mmc$ at room temperature, an additional A$_{1g}$ peak appears at 99.5 ~cm$^{-1}$ upon cooling below $T^*$ = 150 K, which suggests a lattice distortion. Several weak peaks associated with two-phonon excitations emerge with this lattice instability. We also show that the sample is very sensitive to high temperature and high laser power, conditions under which it quickly decomposes, leading to the formation of Sb. Our first-principles calculations indicate that space group $P6_3mc$ (No. 186), corresponding to a vertical displacement of the Sb atoms with respect to the Hg atoms that breaks the inversion symmetry, is lower in energy than the presumed $P6_3/mmc$ structure and preserves the glide plane symmetry necessary to the formation of hourglass fermions., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. By employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with first-principles calculations, we performed a systematic investigation on the electronic structure of LaBi, which exhibits extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR), and is theoretically predicted to possess band anticrossing with nontrivial topological properties. Here, the observations of the Fermi-surface topology and band dispersions are similar to previous studies on LaSb [Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 127204 (2016)], a topologically trivial XMR semimetal, except the existence of a band inversion along the $\Gamma$-$X$ direction, with one massless and one gapped Dirac-like surface state at the $X$ and $\Gamma$ points, respectively. The odd number of massless Dirac cones suggests that LaBi is analogous to the time-reversal $Z_2$ nontrivial topological insulator. A$_2$BB$^\prime$X$_6$ halide double perovskites based on bismuth and silver have recently been proposed as potential environmentally-friendly alternatives to lead-based hybrid halide perovskites. In particular, Cs$_2$BiAgX$_6$ (X = Cl, Br) have been synthesized and found to exhibit band gaps in the visible range. However, the band gaps of these compounds are indirect, which is not ideal for applications in thin film photovoltaics. Here, we propose a new class of halide double perovskites, where the B$^{3+}$ and B$^{+}$ cations are In$^{3+}$ and Ag$^{+}$, respectively. Our first-principles calculations indicate that the hypothetical compounds Cs$_2$InAgX$_6$ (X = Cl, Br, I) should exhibit direct band gaps between the visible (I) and the ultraviolet (Cl). Based on these predictions, we attempt to synthesize Cs$_2$InAgCl$_6$ and Cs$_2$InAgBr$_6$, and we succeed to form the hitherto unknown double perovskite Cs$_2$InAgCl$_6$. X-ray diffraction yields a double perovskite structure with space group $Fm\overline{3}m$. The measured band gap is 3.3 eV, and the compound is found to be photosensitive and turns reversibly from white to orange under ultraviolet illumination. We also perform an empirical analysis of the stability of Cs$_2$InAgX$_6$ and their mixed halides based on Goldschmidt's rules, and we find that it should also be possible to form Cs$_2$InAg(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_{x}$)$_6$ for $x<1$. The synthesis of mixed halides will open the way to the development of lead-free double perovskites with direct and tunable band gaps.

Condensed matter systems can host quasiparticle excitations that are analogues to elementary particles such as Majorana, Weyl, and Dirac fermions. Recent advances in band theory have expanded the classification of fermions in crystals, and revealed crystal symmetry-protected electron excitations that have no high-energy counterparts. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we demonstrate the existence of a triply degenerate point in the electronic structure of MoP crystal, where the quasiparticle excitations are beyond the Majorana-Weyl-Dirac classification. Furthermore, we observe pairs of Weyl points in the bulk electronic structure coexisting with the 'new fermions', thus introducing a platform for studying the interplay between different types of fermions., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

We discover a pair of spin-polarized surface bands on the (111) face of grey arsenic by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). In the occupied side, the pair resembles typical nearly-free-electron Shockley states observed on noble-metal surfaces. However, pump-probe ARPES reveals that the spin-polarized pair traverses the bulk band gap and that the crossing of the pair at $\bar\Gamma$ is topologically unavoidable. First-principles calculations well reproduce the bands and their non-trivial topology; the calculations also support that the surface states are of Shockley type because they arise from a band inversion caused by crystal field. Topological insulators (TIs) host novel states of quantum matter, distinguished from trivial insulators by the presence of nontrivial conducting boundary states connecting the valence and conduction bulk bands. Up to date, all the TIs discovered experimentally rely on the presence of either time reversal or symmorphic mirror symmetry to protect massless Dirac-like boundary states. Very recently, it has been theoretically proposed that several materials are a new type of TIs protected by nonsymmorphic symmetry, where glide-mirror can protect novel exotic surface fermions with hourglass-shaped dispersion. However, an experimental confirmation of such new nonsymmorphic TI (NSTI) is still missing. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we reveal that such hourglass topology exists on the (010) surface of crystalline KHgSb while the (001) surface has no boundary state, which is fully consistent with first-principles calculations. We thus experimentally demonstrate that KHgSb is a NSTI hosting hourglass fermions. By combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and quantum oscillation measurements, we performed a comprehensive investigation on the electronic structure of LaSb, which exhibits near-quadratic extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) without any sign of saturation at magnetic fields as high as 40 T. We clearly resolve one spherical and one intersecting-ellipsoidal hole Fermi surfaces (FSs) at the Brillouin zone (BZ) center $\Gamma$ and one ellipsoidal electron FS at the BZ boundary $X$. The hole and electron carriers calculated from the enclosed FS volumes are perfectly compensated, and the carrier compensation is unaffected by temperature. We further reveal that LaSb is topologically trivial but share many similarities with the Weyl semimetal TaAs family in the bulk electronic structure. Recently, ZrTe5 and HfTe5 are theoretically studied to be the most promising layered topological insulators since they are both interlayer weakly bonded materials and also with a large bulk gap in the single layer. It paves a new way for the study of novel topological quantum phenomenon tuned via external parameters. Here, we report the discovery of superconductivity and properties evolution in HfTe5 single crystal induced via pressures. Our experiments indicated that anomaly resistance peak moves to low temperature first before reverses to high temperature followed by disappearance which is opposite to the low pressure effect on ZrTe5. HfTe5 became superconductive above ~5.5 GPa up to at least 35 GPa in the measured range. The highest superconducting transition temperature (Tc) around 5 K was achieved at 20 GPa. High pressure Raman revealed that new modes appeared around pressure where superconductivity occurs. Crystal structure studies shown that the superconductivity is related to the phase transition from Cmcm structure to monoclinic C2/m structure. The second phase transition from C2/m to P-1 structure occurs at 12 GPa. By using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with first-principles calculations, we reveal that the topmost unit cell of ZrSnTe crystal hosts two-dimensional (2D) electronic bands of topological insulator (TI) state, though such a TI state is defined with a curved Fermi level instead of a global band gap. Furthermore, we find that by modifying the dangling bonds on the surface through hydrogenation, this 2D band structure can be manipulated so that the expected global energy gap is most likely to be realized. This facilitates the practical applications of 2D TI in heterostructural devices and those with surface decoration and coverage. Since ZrSnTe belongs to a large family of compounds having the similar crystal and band structures, our findings shed light on identifying more 2D TI candidates and superconductor-TI heterojunctions supporting topological superconductors., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Two-dimensional (2D) topological insulators (TIs) with a large bulk band-gap are promising for experimental studies of the quantum spin Hall effect and for spintronic device applications. Despite considerable theoretical efforts in predicting large-gap 2D TI candidates, only few of them have been experimentally verified. Here, by combining scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we reveal that the top monolayer of ZrTe5 crystals hosts a large band gap of ~100 meV on the surface and a finite constant density-of-states within the gap at the step edge. Our first-principles calculations confirm the topologically nontrivial nature of the edge states. There is a long-standing confusion concerning the physical origin of the anomalous resistivity peak in transition metal pentatelluride HfTe5. Several mechanisms, like the formation of charge density wave or polaron, have been proposed, but so far no conclusive evidence has been presented. In this work, we investigate the unusual temperature dependence of magneto-transport properties in HfTe5. We find that a three dimensional topological Dirac semimetal state emerges only at around Tp (at which the resistivity shows a pronounced peak), as manifested by a large negative magnetoresistance. This accidental Dirac semimetal state mediates the topological quantum phase transition between the two distinct weak and strong topological insulator phases in HfTe5. Our work not only provides the first evidence of a temperature-induced critical topological phase transition in HfTe5, but also gives a reasonable explanation on the long-lasting question., Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures

We have investigated the spin texture of surface Fermi arcs in the recently discovered Weyl semimetal TaAs using spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The experimental results demonstrate that the Fermi arcs are spin-polarized. The measured spin texture fulfills the requirement of mirror and time reversal symmetries and is well reproduced by our first-principles calculations, which gives strong evidence for the topologically nontrivial Weyl semimetal state in TaAs. A Weyl semimetal possesses spin-polarized band-crossings, called Weyl nodes, connected by topological surface arcs. The low-energy excitations near the crossing points behave the same as massless Weyl fermions, leading to exotic properties like chiral anomaly. To have the transport properties dominated by Weyl fermions, Weyl nodes need to locate nearly at the chemical potential and enclosed by pairs of individual Fermi surfaces with nonzero Fermi Chern numbers. Combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculation, here we show that TaP is a Weyl semimetal with only single type of Weyl fermions, topologically distinguished from TaAs where two types of Weyl fermions contribute to the low-energy physical properties. The simple Weyl fermions in TaP are not only of fundamental interests but also of great potential for future applications. In 1929, H. Weyl proposed that the massless solution of Dirac equation represents a pair of new type particles, the so-called Weyl fermions [1]. However the existence of them in particle physics remains elusive for more than eight decades. Recently, significant advances in both topological insulators and topological semimetals have provided an alternative way to realize Weyl fermions in condensed matter as an emergent phenomenon: when two non-degenerate bands in the three-dimensional momentum space cross in the vicinity of Fermi energy (called as Weyl nodes), the low energy excitation behaves exactly the same as Weyl fermions. Here, by performing soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements which mainly probe bulk band structure, we directly observe the long-sought-after Weyl nodes for the first time in TaAs, whose projected locations on the (001) surface match well to the Fermi arcs, providing undisputable experimental evidence of existence of Weyl fermion quasiparticles in TaAs., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, see also related papers on TaAs arXiv:1501.00060, arXiv:1502.04684

Weyl semimetals are a class of materials that can be regarded as three-dimensional analogs of graphene breaking time reversal or inversion symmetry. Electrons in a Weyl semimetal behave as Weyl fermions, which have many exotic properties, such as chiral anomaly and magnetic monopoles in the crystal momentum space. The surface state of a Weyl semimetal displays pairs of entangled Fermi arcs at two opposite surfaces. However, the existence of Weyl semimetals has not yet been proved experimentally. Here we report the experimental realization of a Weyl semimetal in TaAs by observing Fermi arcs formed by its surface states using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.
