The local atomic structure and lattice dynamics of two isostructural layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), 1T-TiSe$_2$ and 1T-VSe$_2$, were studied using temperature-dependent X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Ti, V, and Se K-edges. Analysis of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra, employing reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) simulations, enabled tracking the temperature evolution of the local environment in the range of 10-300 K. The atomic coordinates derived from the final atomic configurations were used to calculate the partial radial distribution functions (RDFs) and the mean-square relative displacement (MSRD) factors for the first ten coordination shells around the absorbing atoms. Characteristic Einstein frequencies and effective force constants were determined for Ti-Se, Ti-Ti, V-Se, V-V, and Se-Se atom pairs from the temperature dependencies of MSRDs. The obtained results reveal differences in the temperature evolution of lattice dynamics and the strengths of intralayer and interlayer interactions in TiSe$_2$ and VSe$_2$.

Understanding interlayer and intralayer coupling in two-dimensional layered materials (2DLMs) has fundamental and technological importance for their large-scale production, engineering heterostructures, and development of flexible and transparent electronics. At the same time, the quantification of weak interlayer interactions in 2DMLs is a challenging task, especially, from the experimental point of view. Herein, we demonstrate that the use of X-ray absorption spectroscopy in combination with reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations can provide useful information on both interlayer and intralayer coupling in 2DLM 2H$_c$-MoS$_2$. The analysis of the low-temperature (10-300 K) Mo K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) using RMC simulations allows for obtaining information on the means-squared relative displacements $\sigma^2$ for nearest and distant Mo-S and Mo-Mo atom pairs. This information allowed us further to determine the strength of the interlayer and intralayer interactions in terms of the characteristic Einstein frequencies $\omega_E$ and the effective force constants $\kappa$ for the nearest ten coordination shells around molybdenum. The studied temperature range was extended up to 1200 K employing AIMD simulations which were validated at 300 K using the EXAFS data. Both RMC and AIMD results provide evidence of the reduction of correlation in thermal motion between distant atoms and suggest strong anisotropy of atom thermal vibrations within the plane of the layers and in the orthogonal direction.

New monoclinic ($P2$/$c$) tungstates - a medium-entropy tungstate, (Mn,Ni,Cu,Zn)WO$_4$, and a high-entropy tungstate, (Mn,Co,Ni,Cu,Zn)WO$_4$ - were synthesized and characterized. Their phase purity and solid solution nature were confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. X-ray absorption spectroscopy was used to probe the local structure around metal cations. The atomic structures based on the ideal solid solution model were optimized by a simultaneous analysis of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectra at multiple metal absorption edges - five for (Mn,Ni,Cu,Zn)WO$_4$ and six for (Mn,Co,Ni,Cu,Zn)WO$_4$ - by means of reverse Monte Carlo simulations. In both compounds, Ni$^{2+}$ ions have the strongest tendency to organize their local environment and form slightly distorted [NiO$_6$] octahedra, whereas Mn$^{2+}$, Co$^{2+}$, and Zn$^{2+}$ ions have a strongly distorted octahedral coordination. The most intriguing result is that the shape of [CuO$_6$] octahedra in (Mn,Ni,Cu,Zn)WO$_4$ and (Mn,Co,Ni,Cu,Zn)WO$_4$ differs from that found in pure CuWO$_4$, where a strong Jahn-Teller distortion is present: [CuO$_6$] octahedra become more regular with increasing degree of dilution.

Environmentally benign (1-x)Ba(Ti$_{0.8}$Zr$_{0.2}$)O$_3$-x(Ba$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$)TiO$_3$ (BZT-BCT) ceramics are promising materials due to their remarkable high piezoresponse [Liu and Ren, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{103}, 257602 (2009)]. In this Letter, by focusing on local and average structure in combination with macroscopic electromechanical and dielectric measurements we demonstrate the structure property relationship in the tetragonal BZT-BCT ceramic. During high-temperature cubic to tetragonal phase transformation, polar nanoregions are manifested through the spontaneous volume ferroelectrostriction at temperatures below $\sim$ 477 K. Temperature-dependent local structural investigations across the Zr K edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy reveal an anomalous collaboration between the ZrO$_{6}$ and TiO$_6$ octahedra. These octahedra compromise their individuality during polarization development. The presence of domains of submicron size embedded inside the macroscopic ferroelectric regions below T$_{m}$, as well as their hierarchical arrangement, is observed by piezo-response force microscopy. Effects of the existence of the structural/polar heterogeneities below T$_{m}$ are observed also when polarizibilities of the poled and the unpoled samples are compared; the poled sample is found to be more susceptible to the electric field. In addition, by using electric field dependent x-ray diffraction studies we also show that this ceramic under field exhibits reduction of tetragonal distortion, which is consistent with earlier reports., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

The influence of zinc ions on the thermochromic properties of polycrystalline Cu$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$MoO$_4$ ($x$=0.10, 0.50, 0.90) solid solutions was studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Cu, Zn and Mo K-edges. Detailed structural information on the local environment of metal ions was obtained from the simultaneous analysis of EXAFS spectra measured at three metal absorption edges using the reverse Monte Carlo method. Thermochromic phase transition with the hysteretic behaviour between $\alpha$ and $\gamma$ phases was observed in Cu$_{0.90}$Zn$_{0.10}$MoO$_4$ solid solution. It was found that the local environment of molybdenum ions is most susceptible to the substitution of copper for zinc and, upon cooling, transforms from tetrahedral MoO$_4$ to distorted octahedral MoO$_6$.

The structure of Ge$_{20}$Sb$_{10}$S$_{70}$, Ge$_{23}$Sb$_{12}$S$_{65}$ and Ge$_{26}$Sb$_{13}$S$_{61}$ glasses was investigated by neutron diffraction (ND), X-ray diffraction (XRD), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements at the Ge and Sb K-edges as well as Raman scattering. For each composition, large scale structural models were obtained by fitting simultaneously diffraction and EXAFS data sets in the framework of the reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) simulation technique. Ge and S atoms have 4 and 2 nearest neighbors, respectively. The structure of these glasses can be described by the chemically ordered network model: Ge-S and Sb-S bonds are always preferred. These two bond types adequately describe the structure of the stoichiometric glass while S-S bonds can also be found in the S-rich composition. Raman scattering data show the presence of Ge-Ge, Ge-Sb and Sb-Sb bonds in the S-deficient glass but only Ge-Sb bonds are needed to fit diffraction and EXAFS datasets. A significant part of the Sb-S pairs has 0.3-0.4 {\AA} longer bond distance than the usually accepted covalent bond length (~2.45 {\AA}). Temperature dependent synchrotron x-ray diffraction and extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) studies were performed to understand the role of structural characteristics in driving the magnetoelectric mul- tiferoic properties of GdCrO3. The results suggest that the distortion in the structure appears to be associated with the off-center displacement of Gd-atoms together with octahedral rotations via displacement of the oxygen ions in GdCrO3. In addition, the magnetic coupling below magnetic transition temperature leads to additional distortion in the system via magnetostriction effect, playing a complementary role in the enhancement of ferro- electric polarization. Further, a comparative EXAFS study of GdCrO3 with a similar system YCrO3 suggests that oxygen environment of Gd in GdCrO3 is different from Y in YCrO3, which resulting in an orthorhombic P na21 structure in GdCrO3 in contrast to the monoclinic P 21 structure in YCrO3 .
