Feuchtgebiete kommen auf der ganzen Welt vor. In den Tropengebieten sind sie, je nach H��he und Regelm����igkeit der ��berschwemmung und Bodenart, als dichte W��lder, offene Savannen oder als S��mpfe und extensive Moore ausgepr��gt. Die Dauer der Feuchtigkeitsphase ist von entscheidender Bedeutung f��r die Bodenbildung und f��r die vorherrschende Vegetation. Tropische Feuchtgebiete bilden h��ufig gro��e, zusammenh��ngende Fl��chen und tragen wesentlich zum globalen Wasserhaushalt bei. Sie stehen miteinander in Verbindung, ��ber Seen und Fl��sse oder auch indirekt ��ber das Grundwasser. Die dem Schutz der Feuchtgebiete gewidmete Ramsar-Konvention weist darauf hin, dass intakte Feuchtgebiete der Garant f��r die Abflussbildung in B��chen und Fl��ssen (und damit auch f��r unser Trinkwasser) sind. Aufgrund der stetig hohen tropischen Temperaturen kommt Feuchtgebieten eine Sonderrolle im globalen Klima zu. Da die biochemischen Prozesse dort schneller ablaufen als in h��heren Breiten, wird organische Substanz zumeist rasch umgesetzt, was zu einer geringen Bodenbildung f��hrt. Dies ist v.a. beim Phasenwechsel zwischen feuchten und trockenen Bedingungen der Fall, der sehr rasch erfolgen und durch menschliche Aktivit��ten stark beeinflu��t werden kann. W��hrend l��ngerer ��berschwemmungsphasen hingegen entstehen anoxische Bedingungen in den Sedimenten, welche die Mineralisierung von organischer Substanz stark verringern, aber auch die Methanbildung f��rdern. Daher k��nnen tropische Feuchtgebiete in der Summe abwechselnd Kohlenstoffsenken und -quellen sein. F��r saisonale neotropische Feuchtgebiete wurde die ��berschwemmungsdauer von etwa 250 Tagen pro Jahr als ��Schalter�� identifiziert. In l��ngeren Feuchteperioden speichert das System Kohlenstoff, in k��rzeren Perioden setzt es Kohlenstoff frei. Tropical wetlands and their climatic significance using the example of the Pantanal: Wetlands occur all over the world. In the tropical regions, depending on the level and regularity of the flooding and the type of soil, they are pronounced as dense forests, open savannas or as swamps and extensive moors. The duration of the moisture phase is of decisive importance for soil formation and for the prevailing vegetation. Tropical wetlands often form large, contiguous areas and contribute significantly to the global water balance. They are connected to one another, via lakes and rivers or indirectly, via the groundwater. The Ramsar Convention, which is dedicated to the protection of wetlands, points out that intact wetlands are the guarantee for the formation of runoff in streams and rivers (and thus also for our top water). Due to the constantly high temperatures, tropical wetlands play a special role in the global climate. Since the biochemical processes take place there faster than at higher latitudes, organic matter is usually converted quickly, which leads to less soil formation. This is especially the case with the phase change between wet and dry conditions, which can take place very quickly and can be strongly influenced by human activities. During longer periods of flooding, however, anoxic conditions arise in the sediments, which greatly reduce the mineralization of organic matter, but also promote methane formation. Therefore, tropical wetlands can alternately be net carbon sinks oder carbon sources. For seasonal neotropical wetlands, the flood duration of around 250 days per year has been identified as a ��switch��. In longer periods of humidity the system stores carbon, in shorter periods it releases carbon. Los humedales tropicales y su importancia clim��tica utilizando el ejemplo del Pantanal: Los humedales se encuentran en todas las regiones del mundo. En las regiones tropicales, seg��n el nivel y la regularidad de las inundaciones y el tipo de suelo, se manifiestan como bosques densos, sabanas abiertas o como pantanos y p��ramos extensos. La duraci��n de la fase de humedad es de importancia decisiva para la formaci��n del suelo y para la vegetaci��n predominante. Los humedales tropicales a menudo forman ��reas grandes y contiguas y contribuyen significativamente al balance h��drico global. Est��n conectados entre s��, a trav��s de lagos y r��os o indirectamente, a trav��s de las aguas subterr��neas. La Convenci��n de Ramsar, dedicada a la protecci��n de los humedales, se��ala reiteradamente que los humedales intactos son garant��a para la formaci��n de escorrent��as en arroyos y r��os (y por lo tanto tambi��n para nuestra agua potable). Debido a las constantemente elevadas temperaturas tropicales, los humedales juegan un papel especial en el clima global. Dado que los procesos bioqu��micos tienen lugar all�� m��s r��pido que en latitudes m��s altas, la materia org��nica generalmente se convierte r��pidamente, lo que conduce a una menor formaci��n de suelo. Este es especialmente el caso del cambio de fase entre condiciones h��medas y secas, que puede tener lugar muy r��pidamente y puede verse fuertemente influenciado por las actividades humanas. Durante per��odos m��s largos de inundaciones, por otro lado, surgen condiciones an��xicas en los sedimentos, que reducen en gran medida la mineralizaci��n de la materia org��nica, pero tambi��n promueven la formaci��n de metano. As��, en conjunto, los humedales tropicales pueden alternar entre sumideros y fuentes de carbono. Para los humedales neotropicales estacionales, la duraci��n de la inundaci��n de alrededor de 250 d��as por a��o se ha identificado como un ��limite��. En per��odos m��s largos de humedad, el sistema almacena carbono, en per��odos m��s cortos libera carbono.

The Giant Freshwater Pearl Mussel (Margaritifera auricularia) is one of the rarest invertebrate species worldwide. This two-volume book aims to bring together all the so far available information on the species. Both volumes are independent books, although they can be seen as complimentary, giving scientific and technical information. They result from work by the authors in the context of the LIFE+ project 13BIO/FR/001162 „Conservation of the Giant Freshwater Pearl Mussel (Margaritifera auricularia) in Europe“ and include additional work by the contributors from other conservation and research projects.Volume 2 is a manual that focuses on the practical aspects. It delivers hands-on information on how to find then animals in the field, how to identify them, how to study their habitats, how to prepare and run a laboratory for artificial reproduction and rearing, informs about release techniques, as well as descriptions of methods how to reinforce populations by infesting and releasing alternative host fish, or how to preserve mussel habitats. Rivers are hotspots for biological diversity and sources of ecosystem services. After centuries of degradations, river restoration has been recognized as essential to reestablish their socio-ecological quality. This research aims (1) to identify the different restoration practices and drivers, and examine the particularities of urban river restorations, and (2) to assess the potential conflicts inside the socio-ecological system. It concludes, that the better consideration of the socio-ecological system should allow the maximum benefit for both humans and the environment. Die Flussrenaturierung wurde zur Wiederherstellung der sozio-ökologischen Qualität der Flüsse erkannt. Diese Studie hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt unterschiedliche Renaturierungspraktiken und deren Triebkräfte zu identifizieren, die Besonderheiten städtischer Flussrenaturierungen zu untersuchen und die potenziellen Interessenskonflikte im sozio-ökologischen System zu bewerten. Eine wichtige Schlussfolgerung ist, dass eine verbesserte Einbeziehung des sozio-ökologischen Systems, zu besseren Ergebnisse führen könnte, und dadurch der Nutzen für Mensch und Ökologie maximiert wird.

En el capítulo I se analiza la estructura de los ensambles bentónicos de cuatro ambientes del río Paraná Medio. Los ensambles situados en el interior de la llanura se caracterizaron principalmente por un tamaño pequeño, forma hidrodinámica y diapausa. Los ambientes más cercanos al cauce principal se caracterizaron por tamaños mayores y adaptaciones a la alta velocidad de corriente. El resultado de este análisis sugiere una variación de rasgos r-K a lo largo de la dimensión lateral del río Paraná, siendo seleccionados los caracteres r en los ambientes de la llanura y los caracteres K en aquellos cercanos al cauce principal. El capítulo II se propone una clasificación de invertebrados bentónicos en grupos funcionales basada en un análisis de contenido intestinal y solapamiento de nicho. En el capítulo III se analiza la importancia relativa de las fuentes de carbono en los ambientes estudiados durante las fases de aguas bajas y altas. Los resultados mostraron que en una laguna más pequeña, de conexión temporal y amplia zona inundable, la importancia de las diferentes fuentes de carbono varió a lo largo del régimen hidrológico. En el capítulo IV se aborda la dimensión vertical de la trama haciendo énfasis en los parámetros: nivel trófico medio, omnivoría y longitud de cadena. El nivel trófico medio fue de 2,63 mientras que la longitud de cadena fue de 3,66. Por otra parte la omnivoría estimada en la trama fue de 0,35 lo que indica que en promedio las especies consumen presas de un mismo nivel trófico. In the chapter I, the structure of benthic assemblages and the variation of their biological traits in four water bodies of the Middle Paraná River is analyzed. The assemblages inside the floodplain were characterized by small size, hydrodynamic shape and diapauses. On the other hand those assemblages found near the main channel (but not in the thalweg) were characterized by bigger sizes and adaptations to high flow speed. This result suggests a variation of r-K traits along the lateral dimension of the Paraná River. In chapter II, I propose a functional classification of benthic invertebrates on the basis of gut content and niche overlap analyses. In chapter III, I analyze the relative importance of carbon sources in studied environments during both low and high water seasons by means of stable isotopes analysis. The results showed that in a small, temporarily connected and wide flooding zone lake, the relative importance of sources varied largely along the hydrological cycle. In the other lake, in contrast, such variations were much less evident In chapter IV, I approach on the vertical structure of food web stressing the parameters: Mean trophic level, omnivory and food chain length. The mean trophic level was 2.63 while the food chain length was 3.66. The omnivory of the food web was 0.35, indicating that species in general consume preys of the same trophic level.
