9. Effects of a Video-Based Intervention on Emotion Recognition for Children with Autism Who Have Limited Speech in China

Abstract

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have difficulties with emotion recognition and a number of interventions have been designed to address this problem. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of video-based intervention (The Transporters) on emotion recognition in four children (aged 4-8 years old) with ASD who have limited speech in China. This study employed a multiple baseline across participants. The results indicated that the video-based intervention effectively improved emotion recognition in all children with limited speech. However, there was a limited effect in the generalization phase after 7 and 15 days completing the intervention phase. Results of this study have important implications for early intervention educators working with children with ASD.

Abstract

Abstract Purpose To characterize the phenotype and genotype of a Chinese family with autosomal‐dominant retinitis pigmentosa (RP) accompanied by iris coloboma. Methods The proband, a 34‐year‐old male, was examined with his family by using fundus photography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), autofluorescence, and full‐field electroretinography (ffERG). Genetic analyses were conducted through whole‐exome sequencing (WES) to screen for variations. Results Three members of this Chinese family were shown to be bilateral iris coloboma. The male proband and his mother exhibited typical RP feature. The proband's late grandfather had been documented manifestation of iris coloboma. The mode of inheritance was confirmed to be autosomal dominance. Through linkage analysis and WES, a heterozygous variation in the miR‐204 gene (n.37C>T), a noncoding RNA gene, was identified in these three members. Conclusions In this third independent and the first Asian family, the existence of a miR‐204 variant associated with RP accompanied by iris coloboma was confirmed. Our findings reinforce the significance of miR‐204 as an important factor influencing visual function in the retina. When phenotypes like RP accompanied by iris coloboma in an autosomal‐dominant pattern, including in Chinese patients, miR‐204 aberrations should be considered.

Abstract

This study examined the effects of attentional resources (ARs) and emotional reactivity (ER) on emotional memory enhancement (EME) in adolescents and adults. Experiment 1 examined the effects of AR judgment tasks on EME in adolescents and adults by using the allocation-attention and learning-recognition paradigms. Experiment 2 examined the effects of ER on EME in individuals at different ages by using the learning-recognition paradigm. Age and AR interactions affected EME. EME was higher in the adult group than it was in the adolescent group, and it was higher in the sufficient than it was in the insufficient AR task. Negative emotion was significantly higher than positive and neutral emotions were, and positive emotion was significantly higher than neutral emotion was. ER and age had interaction effects on EME. Both the adolescent and adult groups with high ER showed significantly higher negative emotion than they did positive and neutral emotions. Abstract

In this paper, we did a systematic comparative study on the accuracy of two computational methods of elastic constants combined with the density functional theory (DFT), the stress-strain method and the energy-strain method. We took metal Ru as a prototype to compare its high-pressure elastic constants calculated by our present stress-strain method with the previous energy-strain results by others. Although the two methods yielded almost the same accuracy of high-pressure elastic constants for Ru, our stress-strain method directly based on the Hooke's law of elasticity theory is much straightforward and simple to implement. However, the energy-strain method needs complicated pressure corrections because of the pressure effects on the total energy. Various crystal systems have various pressure correction methods. Hence, the stress-strain method is preferred to calculate the high-pressure elastic constants of materials. Abstract

Tellurium can form nanowires of helical atomic chains. Given their unique one-dimensional van der Waals structure, these nanowires are expected to show remarkably different physical and electronic properties than bulk tellurium. Here we show that few-chain and single-chain van der Waals tellurium nanowires can be isolated using carbon nanotube and boron nitride nanotube encapsulation. With the approach, the number of atomic chains can be controlled by the inner diameter of the nanotube. The Raman response of the structures suggests that the interaction between a single-atomic tellurium chain and a carbon nanotube is weak, and that the inter-chain interaction becomes stronger as the number of chains increases. Compared with bare tellurium nanowires on SiO2, nanowires encapsulated in boron nitride nanotubes exhibit a dramatically enhanced current-carrying capacity, with a current density of 1.5*10^8 A cm-2, which exceeds that of most semiconducting nanowires. Abstract

Raman spectroscopy can characterize the rich molecular vibration information of soybean milk powder samples, but difficulties arise in its direct use for sample classification and identification. Therefore, it is urgent to develop an intelligent identification technology based on Raman spectroscopy. For brand identification of soybean milk powder, this work investigates and discusses a variety of spectral processing technologies including wavelet denoising, normalization, principal component analysis, and the results show that appropriate spectral processing can improve the recognition accuracy of the random forest algorithm. Under the optimal conditions (db2 wavelet, normalization, principal component analysis, 30 decision trees), the best recognition effect of soybean milk brand identification can be achieved. The Raman spectral signal acquisition time of each sample is 40 s, and the spectra pretreatment and identification operation time only takes a few minutes.
