Near-death experiences (NDEs) are reported by 5 to 10 percent of the general population and are now being recognized as a unique mental state that can offer insights into consciousness. Researchers are studying the neurobiology of NDEs and have found a surge of gamma activity in the brain during these experiences. A recent study found that 40 percent of patients in crisis showed neurological activity consistent with conscious brains during CPR, but it was unclear if they had any memory of the event. The study also explored out-of-body experiences, with one person correctly naming fruits, although this could have been by chance. Some scientists disagree with the study's findings, arguing that NDEs are a survival tactic rather than evidence of consciousness outside the brain. Another study is underway to collect more data on NDEs and evaluate claims about out-of-body experiences. Studies comparing NDEs with the effects of psychedelic drugs have found similarities, which may expand our understanding of consciousness and existence. [Extracted from the article]
