The TGF-β signaling pathway is closely associated with human health and disease, and the systematic identification of factors involved in the TGF-β signaling pathway significantly contributes to the understanding and treatment of various diseases. Through kinome-wide CRISPR screen, we identified 13 candidate regulatory targets. Notably, the well-known hallmark genes TGFBR1 and TGFBR2 emerged as the top two candidate targets. OXSR1 and EXOSC10 were ranked third and fourth as positive candidate targets, respectively, with EXOSC10 being a novel discovery. Importantly, our findings revealed the down-regulation of OXSR1 and EXOSC10 using CRISPR knockout and RNAi technology effectively suppressed the TGF-β signaling pathway in HeLa and HaCaT cells, providing new insights of TGF-β signaling.

Abstract The wearable contact lens that continuously monitors intraocular pressure (IOP) facilitates prompt and early-state medical treatments of oculopathies such as glaucoma, postoperative myopia, etc. However, either taking drugs for pre-treatment or delaying the treatment process in the absence of a neural feedback component cannot realize accurate diagnosis or effective treatment. Herein, a neuroprosthetic contact lens enabled sensorimotor system is reported, which consists of a smart contact lens with Ti3C2T x Wheatstone bridge structured IOP strain sensor, a Ti3C2T x temperature sensor and an IOP point-of-care monitoring/display system. The point-of-care IOP monitoring and warning can be realized due to the high sensitivity of 12.52 mV mmHg−1 of the neuroprosthetic contact lens. In vivo experiments on rabbit eyes demonstrate the excellent wearability and biocompatibility of the neuroprosthetic contact lens. Further experiments on a living rate in vitro successfully mimic the biological sensorimotor loop. The leg twitching (larger or smaller angles) of the living rat was demonstrated under the command of motor cortex controlled by somatosensory cortex when the IOP is away from the normal range (higher or lower).

In order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, it is necessary to actively promote a coordinated and balanced relationship between carbon dioxide emissions (CO2e), material footprints (MF) and human development, based on the economic and social development stages of different countries and their material resource endowments. However, the existing research results lack cross-country comparisons and overly focus on the single conclusion of quantifying decoupling while ignoring the impact of coupling coordination nexus. Thus, this study comprehensively evaluated the nexus between CO2e, MF, and human development index (HDI) in 151 countries from 1990 to 2019 based on the modified coupling coordination degree model and the improved decoupling index model. The results show that, both the global MF per capita and HDI have maintained an increasing trend, and the MF per capita has been increasing significantly faster than the HDI. The trend of CO2e per capita is slowly dropping, with very high HDI countries being the main contributors. Besides, global regional differences in CO2e per capita and MF per capita are still expanding. Worldwide differences in per unit of CO2e and per unit of MF for HDI variation are narrowing. Furtherly, there is a more general but short-lived trend of absolute decoupling for very high HDI and low HDI countries, while medium HDI countries show a significant trend of coupling. By combining the endowment characteristics of some typical countries, it can be observed that the net fossil energy importing countries with higher HDI have high degree of coupling coordination, but gradually evolve towards the state of relative decoupling. There is still a significant trend of recoupling between the MF and HDI in the net fossil energy exporting countries with higher HDI, but CO2e is gradually evolving towards decoupling. The coupling coordination state is deepening in some low HDI countries. Due to the huge differences in national endowment characteristics and development stages, targeted energy conservation and emission reduction strategies are important for achieving coordinated development between CO2e, MF and HDI.

Abstract Background Polypharmacy would increase the risk of adverse drug events and the burden of renal drug excretion among older people. Nevertheless, the association between the number of medication and the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains controversial. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the association between the number of medication and the incidence of CKD in older people. Methods This study investigates the association between the number of medications and CKD in 2672 elderly people (≥ 65 years older) of the community health service center in southern China between 2019 and 2022. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between polypharmacy and CKD. Results At baseline, the average age of the study subjects was 71.86 ± 4.60, 61.2% were females, and 53 (2.0%) suffer from polypharmacy. During an average follow-up of 3 years, new-onset CKD developed in 413 (15.5%) participants. Logistic regression analysis revealed that taking a higher number of medications was associated with increase of CKD. Compared with people who didn’t take medication, a higher risk of CKD was observed in the older people who taken more than five medications (OR 3.731, 95% CI 1.988, 7.003), followed by those who take four (OR 1.621, 95% CI 1.041, 2.525), three (OR 1.696, 95% CI 1.178, 2.441), two drugs (OR 1.585, 95% CI 1.167, 2.153), or one drug (OR 1.503, 95% CI 1.097, 2.053). Couplings between electricity, heat, and natural gas system are deepening due to the requirement of a new energy paradigm and the development and commercialization of emerging energy conversion technologies such as heat pump (HP) and power-to-gas (P2G). In this context, this paper proposed a coordinated scheduling model for a heat–gas–electricity integrated system with compound emerging energy conversion technologies. First, new emerging/growing energy conversion technologies are reviewed and their models are discussed. Secondly, a coordinated scheduling model of the heat–gas–electricity integrated system is proposed with respect to their characteristics and interactions. Finally, an integrated electricity–gas–heat distributed energy system is employed to validate the proposed model. The utilization efficiency and installation suggestion are discussed as well.

Alpine wetlands are critical ecosystems for global carbon (C) cycling and climate change mitigation. Ecological restoration projects for alpine grazing wetlands are urgently needed, especially due to their critical role as carbon (C) sinks. However, the fate of the C pool in alpine wetlands after restoration from grazing remains unclear. In this study, soil samples from both grazed and restored wetlands in Zoige (near Hongyuan County, Sichuan Province, China) were collected to analyze soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), soil properties, and plant biomass. Moreover, the Tea Bag Index (TBI) was applied to assess the initial decomposition rate (k) and stabilization factor (S), providing a novel perspective on SOC dynamics. The results of this research revealed that the mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) was 1.40 times higher in restored sites compared to grazed sites, although no significant difference in particulate organic carbon (POC) was detected between the two site types. Furthermore, the increased MAOC after restoration exhibited a significant positive correlation with various parameters including S, C and N content, aboveground biomass, WSOC, AMF diversity, and NH4+. This indicates that restoration significantly increases plant primary production, litter turnover, soil characteristics, and AMF diversity, thereby enhancing the C stabilization capacity of alpine wetland soils.

Alpine wetlands, critical ecosystems in high-altitude mountain areas, play essential roles in water conservation, biodiversity protection, and carbon (C) sequestration. These ecosystems are particularly sensitive to climate change, with temperature and precipitation variations significantly impacting their structure and functional processes, such as litter decomposition, a key mechanism for C stabilization. This study focused on the Zoige wetland, a representative alpine wetland located on the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau. An incubation experiment was conducted with soil samples under simulated wet and dry moisture conditions to evaluate the environmental impacts on litter decomposition within this ecosystem. In this study, we employed the Tea Bag Index method, utilizing standardized litter, alongside native litter bags to compare the decomposition processes. This comparison between the uniform composition of standardized litter and the chemically diverse native plant litter aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of litter decomposition dynamics in alpine wetland ecosystems. Our finding showed that both standardized and native litter decomposition significantly decreased under dry conditions, in contrast to wetter condition. The components of both standardized and native litter exhibited a decrease over time, with the easily decomposable fractions breaking down swiftly, in contrast to the slower decomposition of the more resistant components. Furthermore, soil exo-enzyme activities varied significantly with environmental conditions. Wet conditions were observed to enhance soil microbial activity, whereas dry conditions resulted in shifts in microbial biomass C and nitrogen, indicative of drought resilience. The correlation analysis revealed that the composition of native litter is the primary factor influencing its decomposition. In contrast, the decomposition of standardized litter was influenced by both its composition and soil microbial activity. Thus, the distinction between the influences on native and standardized litter decomposition highlights the necessity of considering both litter quality and microbial interaction in ecological studies. This approach offers critical insight into the advantages and limitations of each decomposition methodology within alpine wetland ecosystems.

Grazing exclusion (GE) is considered an effective strategy for restoring the degradation of overgrazed grasslands on the global scale. Soil microbial diversity plays a crucial role in supporting multiple ecosystem functions (multifunctionality) in grassland ecosystems. However, the impact of grazing exclusion on soil microbial diversity remains uncertain. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis using a dataset comprising 246 paired observations from 46 peer-reviewed papers to estimate how GE affects microbial diversity and how these effects vary with climatic regions, grassland types, and GE duration ranging from 1 to 64 years. Meanwhile, we explored the relationship between microbial diversity and its functionality under grazing exclusion. Overall, grazing exclusion significantly increased microbial Shannon (1.9%) and microbial richness (4.9%) compared to grazing group. For microbial groups, GE significantly increased fungal richness (8.6%) and bacterial richness (5.3%), but decreased specific microbial richness (-11.9%). The responses of microbial Shannon to GE varied among climatic regions, grassland types, and GE duration. Specifically, GE increased microbial diversity in in arid, semi-arid, and dry sub-humid regions, but decreased it in humid regions. Moreover, GE significantly increased microbial Shannon in semidesert grasslands (5.9%) and alpine grasslands (3.0%), but not in temperate grasslands. Abstract Gametophyte development in angiosperms occurs within diploid sporophytic structures and requires coordinated development; e.g., development of the male gametophyte pollen depends on the surrounding sporophytic tissue, the tapetum. The mechanisms underlying this interaction remain poorly characterized. The peptide CLAVATA3/EMBRYO SURROUNDING REGION-RELATED 19 (CLE19) plays a “braking” role in preventing the harmful overexpression of tapetum transcriptional regulators to ensure normal pollen development in Arabidopsis. However, the CLE19 receptor is unknown. Here, we show that CLE19 interacts directly with the PXY-LIKE1 (PXL1) ectodomain and induces PXL1 phosphorylation. PXL1 is also required for the function of CLE19 in maintaining the tapetal transcriptional regulation of pollen exine genes. Additionally, CLE19 induces the interactions of PXL1 with SOMATIC EMBRYOGENESIS RECEPTOR-LIKE KINASE (SERK) coreceptors required for pollen development. We propose that PXL1 and SERKs act as receptor and coreceptor, respectively, of the extracellular CLE19 signal, thereby regulating tapetum gene expression and pollen development.

Wire icing events pose a significant threat to the southern power grid’s transmission lines in China. Fifteen such events were identified from 2018 to 2020 on the Guilin-Haiyang Mountain transmission line. Hourly measurements of ice thickness and concurrent meteorological data were analyzed using the Makkonen model’s freezing rate formula to categorize the events into distinct growth patterns: dry and wet. The relationship between wire icing and meteorological factors across different micro-topography (windward slope, leeward slope, and pass) was further explored. Several key conclusions can be drawn. First, the altitude is positively correlated to the icing thickness, but relatively independent of the icing rate; however, such independence between the icing rate and altitude cannot be interpreted by the negative correlation of altitude with temperature and the positive relationship between wind speed and liquid water content. Second, a pronounced connection of the icing rate with meteorological factors is not shown until the wet and dry patterns are separated. Notably, the correlations differ between these two patterns, with icing rate being negatively correlated with temperature for the wet growth process, but positively correlated with wind speed and liquid water content for the dry growth process. Third, both wet and dry growth processes exist across the icing events. A shift from wet to dry growth was evident with increasing altitude. At the mountain’s base, wet growth predominates, with the icing rate determined by the temperature close to the freezing point, whereas the higher temperature and lower liquid water flux account for the shorter wire icing duration, lower icing rate, and thus the thinner icing thickness at the leeward slope compared to the windward slope at a similar altitude. This study sheds light on the variations in icing rates under different micro-topographies and the underlying physical mechanisms governing icing growth patterns and provides a much-needed understanding of these distinct growth processes on the development of a more sophisticated predictive model for conductor icing.

In September 2020, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) released Order 2222, which opens wholesale markets to small-capacity distributed energy resources (DERs), recognizing their potential in improving operational efficiency by providing bulk grid services. Therefore, a co-simulation capability that can connect transmission and distribution (T&D) simulations and evaluate the impacts of DER provision of bulk grid services is needed. In this paper, we present a new integrated T&D co-simulation platform that incorporates T&D system simulators, DER aggregator/group strategies, and a co-simulation coordinator. Industry-standard communication protocols are employed to mimic real-world conditions. Secondary frequency regulation is selected as the representative bulk grid service, and we simulate the responses of DERs to the frequency regulation signals. The simulation results for a solar-rich distribution feeder in Colorado, USA, demonstrate how the T&D co-simulation setup is used to evaluate the contributions of DERs to minimize the bulk grid frequency deviation.

ABSTRACT Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) can colonize the gastrointestinal tract and cause bloody diarrhea in children. Previous studies showed that its pathogenesis could be mediated by metabolites from both the host and microbiota. L-Glutamine (Gln) was found to be depleted in intestinal tissues as the main energy source according to previous studies. Hence, we aimed to determine the effects of Gln on EHEC infection and its underlying mode of action. In this study, a Gln-limited signal was found to activate the type 3 secretion system (T3SS), which is crucial for EHEC infection via perturbation of central metabolism. By shifting the phosphorylation of NtrC, a key regulator in bacterial nitrogen metabolism, Gln stimulates ler transcripts in a σS-PchA-dependent manner. Our in vivo experiments further demonstrated that Gln supplementation can reduce EHEC colonization in the gastrointestinal tract by repressing T3SS. Moreover, Gln could further attenuate bacterial infection by boosting host defense, which might be dependent on multiple pathways. Besides, our experiments demonstrated that Gln did not induce Shiga-like toxin (Stx) production or cause impairment of gut flora. In conclusion, our study presented evidence that Gln could act against EHEC infection by reducing bacterial virulence and strengthening host defense. Therefore, Gln serves as a promising therapeutic agent for EHEC infection. IMPORTANCE The type 3 secretion system (T3SS) was obtained in many Gram-negative bacterial pathogens, and it is crucial for their pathogenesis. Environmental signals were found to be involved in the expression regulation of T3SS, which was vital for successful bacterial infection in the host. Here, we discovered that L-glutamine (Gln), the most abundant amino acid in the human body, could repress enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) T3SS expression via nitrogen metabolism and therefore had potential as an antivirulence agent. Our in vitro and in vivo evidence demonstrated that Gln could decline EHEC infection by attenuating bacterial virulence and enhancing host defense simultaneously. We repurpose Gln as a potential treatment for EHEC infection accordingly.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases in the world. To reduce the incidence of AD, it’s essential to quantify the AD conversion risk of mild cognitive impaired (MCI) individuals. Here, we propose an AD conversion risk estimation system (CRES), which contains an automated MRI feature extractor, brain age estimation (BAE) module, and AD conversion risk estimation module. The CRES is trained on 634 normal controls (NC) from the public IXI and OASIS cohorts, then it is evaluated on 462 subjects (106 NC, 102 stable MCI (sMCI), 124 progressive MCI (pMCI) and 130 AD) from the ADNI dataset. Experimental results show that the MRI derived age gap (AG, chronological age subtracted from the estimated brain age) significantly distinguish NC, sMCI, pMCI and AD groups with ${p}$ -value $=0.000017$ . Considering AG as the primary factor, incorporating gender and Minimum Mental State Examination (MMSE) for more robust Cox multi-variate hazard analysis, we concluded that each additional year in AG is associated with 4.57% greater AD conversion risk for the MCI group. Furthermore, a nomogram was drawn to describe MCI conversion risk at the individual level in the next 1 year, 3 years, 5 years and even 8 years from baseline. This work demonstrates that CRES can estimate AG based on MRI data, evaluate AD conversion risk of the MCI subjects, and identify the individuals with high AD conversion risk, which is valuable for effective intervention and diagnosis within an early period.

Urban growth models that consider spatial control and factor flows are important for the integrated management of urban agglomerations, and to date, no simulation method has been available to consider both thoroughly. We proposed a new cellular automaton (CAGBDT) model based on gradient boosting decision trees (GBDT) to simulate urban growth in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) area of China. In this model, GBDT was used to retrieve land transition rules by integrating multiple weak learners and a feature expansion approach was employed to remove high correlations among urban growth drivers and then expand the factor features. We applied the final urban pattern as the dependent variable and selected nine drivers as the independent variables of urban growth in YRD. The simulation results show that the overall accuracies exceeded 89% and the figure-of-merits (FOMs) exceeded 27%, about 10% higher than other similar simulations in YRD, indicating the strong ability of CAGBDT to simulate urban growth in YRD. Although the inclusion of inter-city material and information element flows in the model improves the accuracy by only 1%, it reveals the different development patterns in Hangzhou Bay in the south of YRD and the Taihu Lake basin in the center of YRD. By considering urban scenarios under different strategies of spatial control, it shows that the simulated FOMs declined by 5% with the stronger enforcement of spatial regulations, reflecting that the actual urban growth in fully non-developable areas and 20% partly developable areas of YRD has already violated the regulations. The results can help urban planners and local authorities to develop solutions for the development of a high-quality YRD urban agglomeration. The proposed model is applicable to diagnose urban land-use change elsewhere, especially in rapidly developing cities that need balancing urban growth and ecological protection.

Rain gardens are one of the best measures for rainfall runoff and pollutant abatement in sponge city construction. The rain garden system was designed and developed for the problem of severely impeded urban water circulation. The rain gardens monitored the rainfall runoff abatement and pollutant removal capacity for 46 sessions from January 2018 to December 2019. Based on these data, the impact of rain gardens on runoff abatement rate and pollutant removal rate was studied. The results obtained indicated that the rain garden on the runoff abatement rate reached 82.5%, except with extreme rainfall, all fields of rainfall can be effectively abated. The removal rate of suspended solid particles was the highest, followed by total nitrogen and total phosphorus, the total removal rate in 66.35% above. The rain garden is still in the “youth stage”, and all aspects of the operation effect are good.

Linkages between microbial communities and multiple ecosystem functions are context-dependent. However, the impacts of different restoration measures on microbial communities and ecosystem functioning remain unclear. Here, a 14-year long-term experiment was conducted using three restoration modes: planting mixed grasses (MG), planting shrub with Salix cupularis alone (SA), and planting shrub with Salix cupularis plus planting mixed grasses (SG), with an extremely degraded grassland serving as the control (CK). Our objective was to investigate how ecosystem multifunctionality and microbial communities (diversity, composition, and co-occurrence networks) respond to different restoration modes. Our results indicated that most of individual functions (i.e., soil nutrient contents, enzyme activities, and microbial biomass) in the SG treatment were significantly higher than in the CK treatment, and even higher than MG and SA treatments. Compared with the CK treatment, treatments MG, SA, and SG significantly increased the multifunctionality index on average by 0.57, 0.23 and 0.76, respectively. Random forest modeling showed that the alpha-diversity and composition of bacterial communities, rather than fungal communities, drove the ecosystem multifunctionality. Moreover, we found that both the MG and SG treatments significantly improved bacterial network stability, which exhabited stronger correlations with ecosystem multifunctionality compared to fungal network stability. In summary, this study demonstrates that planting shrub and grasses altogether is a promising restoration mode that can enhance ecosystem multifunctionality and improve microbial diversity and stability in the alpine degraded grassland.

Abstract With the development of individual wearable electronics, the requirements of self‐energy harvest devices from human skin or motion have increased. A thermal harvest device that receives thermal energy naturally existed in human skin is more attractive than a mechanical energy harvester that needs human motion or walking. Herein, a thermal‐chargeable supercapacitor (TCSC) is proposed, which can convert thermal energy into electrical energy and then store the energy only by occurring the temperature difference between the two ends of the TCSC. The all‐solid‐state g‐C3N4‐modified hydrogel electrolyte in the TCSC provides more free protons and energy for proton migration by the electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bond interaction between g‐C3N4 and the acid group. The 2D MOF@Ti3C2Tx MXene heterojunction electrodes with the advantages of large pore size, adjustable and abundant REDOX sites of MOFs, and high conductivity of Ti3C2Tx MXene also ensure the high performance of the TCSC. As a result, the assembled TCSC exhibits excellent ionic thermal‐voltage (55.68 mV), Seebeck coefficient (18.56 mV K−1), and energy exchange efficiency (3.4%) upon a temperature difference of 3 K, and successfully drives the pressure sensor work.

Waste mushroom residues are often returned to fields as organic amendments. Here, we estimated the effects of the continuous applications of different spent mushroom substrates for 2 years on crop yields, soil nutrients, and heavy metals in paddy fields. The study comprised seven treatments: no fertilization (CK) and mineral NPK fertilizer (CF), as well as NPK fertilizer combined with Enoki mushroom residue (EMR50), Oyster mushroom residue (OMR50), Auricularia polytricha mushroom residue (APR50), Shiitake mushroom residue (SMR50), and Agaricus bisporus residue (ABR50). The grain yield was highest under the APR50 treatment. The short-term application of waste mushroom residue significantly increased SOC, TN, TP, and TK content relative to the CK treatment. The SOC, TP, and TK were highest under ABR50. Both total Cr and Cd contents were highest under CF treatment. The highest cumulative ecological risk was observed under OMR50 treatment. In addition, crop yield was positively correlated with SOC, TN, TP, and TP. Our results highlight that further research and innovation are needed to optimize the benefits and overcome the challenges of mushroom residue application.

Micro/nano-plastics (MNPs) are considered a heterogeneous class of environmental contaminants that cause multiple toxic effects on biological species. As the commonly used mammalian models to study the effects of MNPs with regard to their toxic effects, the mouse and rat models are making a great contribution to the disciplines of environmental toxicology and medical health. However, the toxic effects of MNPs have not been systematically summarized. Therefore, a systematic review and a meta-analysis of the toxic effects of MNPs on mouse/rat models were conducted. A total of seven main categories were established in this systematic review, and 24 subcategories were further divided according to the specific physiological significance of the endpoint or the classification of the physiological system, which covered all the selected pieces of literature. A total of 1,762 biological endpoints were found, and 52.78% of them were significantly affected. This fact indicates that there are relative factors, including the size, polymer type, concentration, and exposure time of MNPs and different sexes of mouse/rat models that could significantly affect the biological endpoints. These biological endpoints can be classified into various factors, such as the dose–response relationships between MNP concentration and physiological categories of the nervous system, growth, reproduction, digestive tract histopathology, and inflammatory cytokine level, among others. MNPs negatively affected the blood glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism, and reproductive function in mice. The reproductive function in male mice is more sensitive to the toxic effects of MNPs. These findings also provide insights into and directions for exploring the evidence and mechanisms of the toxic effects of MNPs on human health. It is clear that more research is required on the pathological mechanisms at the molecular level and the long-term effects of tissue accumulation.

"Crowded pedestrian detection" is a hot topic in the field of pedestrian detection. To address the issue of missed targets and small pedestrians in crowded scenes, an improved DETR object detection algorithm called DETR-crowd is proposed. The attention model DETR is used as the baseline model to complete object detection in the absence of partial features in crowded pedestrian scenes. The deformable attention encoder is introduced to effectively utilize multi-scale feature maps containing a large amount of small target information to improve the detection accuracy of small pedestrians. To enhance the efficiency of important feature extraction and refinement, the improved EfficientNet backbone network fused with a channel spatial attention module is used for feature extraction. To address the issue of low training efficiency of models that use attention detection modules, Smooth-L1 and GIOU are combined as the loss function during training, allowing the model to converge to higher precision. Experimental results on the Wider-Person crowded pedestrian detection dataset show that the proposed algorithm leads YOLO-X by 0.039 in AP50 accuracy and YOLO-V5 by 0.015 in AP50 accuracy. The proposed algorithm can be effectively applied to crowded pedestrian detection tasks.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) mineralization is affected by ecological restoration and plays an important role in the soil C cycle. However, the mechanism of ecological restoration on SOC mineralization remains unclear. Here, we collected soils from the degraded grassland that have undergone 14 years of ecological restoration by planting shrubs with Salix cupularis alone (SA) and, planting shrubs with Salix cupularis plus planting mixed grasses (SG), with the extremely degraded grassland underwent natural restoration as control (CK). We aimed to investigate the effect of ecological restoration on SOC mineralization at different soil depths, and to address the relative importance of biotic and abiotic drivers of SOC mineralization. Our results documented the statistically significant impacts of restoration mode and its interaction with soil depth on SOC mineralization. Compared with CK, the SA and SG increased the cumulative SOC mineralization but decreased C mineralization efficiency at the 0–20 and 20–40 cm soil depths. Random Forest analyses showed that soil depth, microbial biomass C (MBC), hot-water extractable organic C (HWEOC), and bacterial community composition were important indicators that predicted SOC mineralization. Structural equal modeling indicated that MBC, SOC, and C-cycling enzymes had positive effects on SOC mineralization. Bacterial community composition regulated SOC mineralization via controlling microbial biomass production and C-cycling enzyme activities. Overall, our study provides insights into soil biotic and abiotic factors in association with SOC mineralization, and contributes to understanding the effect and mechanism of ecological restoration on SOC mineralization in a degraded grassland in an alpine region.

The use of deep detection networks can help to enhance the management, reduce workload, and improve the efficiency and quality of dynamic defect detection in distribution network engineering. This involves classifying defects, researching and analyzing advanced deep detection networks and their applications in dynamic defect detection, reviewing existing research, and identifying key issues and their solutions. The paper also explores future research directions to provide useful references for future studies. Overall, the aim is to address potential safety and quality issues and mitigate hazards in the operation of distribution networks.

Soil microbial characteristics are considered to be an index for soil quality evaluation. It is generally believed that organic amendments replacing chemical fertilizers have positive effects on changing microbial activity and community structure. However, their effects on different agro-ecosystems on a global scale and their differences in different environmental conditions and experimental durations are unclear. This study performed a meta-analysis based on 94 studies with 204 observations to evaluate the overall effects and their differences in different experimental conditions and duration. The results indicated that compared to chemical fertilizer, organic amendments significantly increased total microbial biomass, bacterial biomass, fungal biomass, Gram-positive bacterial biomass and Gram-negative bacterial biomass, and had no effect on the ratio of fungi to bacteria and ratio of Gram-positive bacteria to Gram-negative bacteria. Meanwhile, land use type, mean annual precipitation and soil initial pH are essential factors affecting microbial activity response. Organic-amendment-induced shifts in microbial biomass can be predominantly explained by soil C and nutrient availability changes. Additionally, we observed positive relationships between microbial functionality and microbial biomass, suggesting that organic-amendment-induced changes in microbial activities improved soil microbial functionality.

Application of organic fertilizers or their combination with chemical fertilizers is a feasible practice for improving soil fertility and reducing soil degradation in agroecosystems, and these regulations are mainly mediated though soil microbial communities. Despite bacteria ranking among the most abundant and diverse groups of soil microorganisms, the effects of long-term organic fertilization (OF) and chemical–organic fertilization (COF) on soil bacterial diversity and community composition remain unclear. In this study, we conducted a meta-analysis and demonstrated that OF had no significant effect on bacterial alpha diversity. Application of chemical fertilizer and crop residue significantly decreased bacterial Richness index. Both OF and COF significantly altered bacterial community structure, with these changes being predominately attributed to shifts in soil pH. For bacterial phyla, both OF and COF significantly increased the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes, suggesting that OF and COF may cause the enrichment of copiotrophic taxa. In addition, COF significantly increased the relative abundance of Gammaproteobacteria but decreased the relative abundance of Acidobacteria. Overall, our results suggest that organic and chemical–organic fertilization can effectively maintain bacterial diversity and enhance soil fertility in agroecosystems, and the alteration of soil bacterial community structure is closely intertwined with soil pH.

Abstract Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors (SCs) are considered as promising energy storage owing to their high energy density compared to traditional SCs. How to realize the miniaturization, patterning, and flexibility of the Zn-ion SCs without affecting the electrochemical performances has special meanings for expanding their applications in wearable integrated electronics. Ti3C2T x cathode with outstanding conductivity, unique lamellar structure and good mechanical flexibility has been demonstrated tremendous potential in the design of Zn-ion SCs, but achieving long cycling stability and high rate stability is still big challenges. Here, we proposed a facile laser writing approach to fabricate patterned Ti3C2T x -based Zn-ion micro-supercapacitors (MSCs), followed by the in-situ anneal treatment of the assembled MSCs to improve the long-term stability, which exhibits 80% of the capacitance retention even after 50,000 charge/discharge cycles and superior rate stability. The influence of the cathode thickness on the electrochemical performance of the MSCs is also studied. When the thickness reaches 0.851 µm the maximum areal capacitance of 72.02 mF cm−2 at scan rate of 10 mV s−1, which is 1.77 times higher than that with a thickness of 0.329 µm (35.6 mF cm−2). Moreover, the fabricated Ti3C2T x based Zn-ion MSCs have excellent flexibility, a digital timer can be driven by the single device even under bending state, a flexible LED displayer of “TiC” logo also can be easily lighted by the MSC arrays under twisting, crimping, and winding conditions, demonstrating the scalable fabrication and application of the fabricated MSCs in portable electronics.

The rapid growth of distributed generator (DG) capacities has introduced additional controllable assets to improve the performance of distribution systems in terms of service restoration. Renewable DGs are of particular interest to utility companies, but the stochastic nature of intermittent renewable DGs could have a negative impact on the electric grid if they are not properly handled. In this study, we investigate distribution system service restoration using DGs as the primary power source, and we develop an effective approach to handle the uncertainty of renewable DGs under extreme conditions. The distribution system service restoration problem can be described as a mixed-integer second-order cone programming model by modifying the radial topology constraints and power flow equations. The uncertainty of renewable DGs will be modeled using a chance-constrained approach. Furthermore, the forecast errors and noises in real-time operation are solved using a novel model-free control algorithm that can automatically track the trajectory of real-time DG output. The proposed service restoration strategy and model-free control algorithm are validated using an IEEE 123-bus test system.

Abstract The flexible charging and discharging behaviours of electric vehicles (EVs) can provide a promising profit opportunity for EV owners or aggregators in deregulated market. However, a major barrier to overcome is the uncertain market prices. In this context, this study aims to establish a novel and robust model for EV aggregators to optimally participate in multiple types of electricity markets while considering the uncertainty of the prices in various markets. First, the electricity market framework and the obligation of an EV aggregator are introduced, and each EVaggregator is entitled to participate in day‐ahead, real‐time, and regulation service markets. To cope with forecasting errors of market prices and other uncertainties, a robust optimisation model is developed to schedule the charging/discharging of EVs in different markets. A stepwise bidding strategy is then proposed to formulate robust market bids, offering more flexibility in handling volatile market prices in actual electricity markets. After the clearing of multiple types of electricity markets, a real‐time dispatch model for EV aggregators is proposed for allocating the settlements and regulation orders to each EV. Finally, scenario‐based simulation is employed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed bidding strategy using actual market data and regulation signals.

ObjectivesTo investigate the role of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF)/c-Met signaling in oral malignant transformation.MethodsWe used immunohistochemistry to investigate HGF and c-Met expression in 53 oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) specimens and 21 adjacent nontumor specimens and evaluated the associations between HGF and c-Met expression and clinicopathological parameters. Additionally, HGF-overexpression transgenic (HGF-Tg) and wild-type (Wt) mice were treated with 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4NQO) to induce oral carcinogenesis for 16 weeks. At 16, 20, and 24 weeks, tongue lesions were collected for clinical observation; estimation of HGF, c-Met, and PCNA expression; apoptosis (TUNEL) assays; and RNA sequencing (RNA-seq).ResultsHGF and c-Met were positively expressed in 92.5% and 64% of OSCC samples, respectively. High HGF expression was significantly associated with smaller tumor size (p = 0.006) and inferior TNM stage (p = 0.032). No correlation between HGF and c-Met levels and other clinical parameters or prognosis was noted. In addition, HGF and c-Met expression was elevated in 4NQO-induced lesions of Wt mice. Compared with Wt mice, HGF-Tg mice have lower tumor incidence, number, volume, and lesion grade. In addition, the percentage of PCNA-positive cells in Wt mice was significantly higher than that in HGF-Tg mice at different time points. At 16 weeks, HGF-Tg mice exhibited less apoptotic cells compared with Wt mice (p < 0.000), and these levels gradually increased until the levels were greater than that of Wt mice at 24 weeks (p < 0.000). RNA-seq data revealed that 140 genes were upregulated and 137 genes were downregulated in HGF-Tg mice. KEGG enrichment analysis showed that upregulated differentially expressed genes (DEGs) are highly correlated with oxidative and metabolic signaling and that downregulated DEGs are related to MAPK and PI3K-AKT signaling.ConclusionsHGF and c-Met expression is upregulated in OSCC tissues and is associated with the occurrence and development of OSCC. HGF overexpression in normal oral epithelial tissue can inhibit 4NQO-induced tumorigenesis potentially through inhibiting proliferation and accelerating apoptosis via MAPK and PI3K-AKT signaling.

The increasing penetration of highly intermittent wind generation could seriously jeopardize the operation reliability of power systems and increase the risk of electricity outages. To this end, this paper proposes a novel data-driven method for operation risk assessment of wind-integrated power systems. Firstly, a new approach is presented to model the uncertainty of wind power in lead time. The proposed approach employs k-means clustering and mixture models (MMs) to construct time-dependent probability distributions of wind power. The proposed approach can also capture the complicated statistical features of wind power such as multimodality. Then, a non-sequential Monte Carlo simulation (NSMCS) technique is adopted to evaluate the operation risk indices. To improve the computation performance of NSMCS, a cross-entropy based importance sampling (CE-IS) technique is applied. The CE-IS technique is modified to include the proposed model of wind power. The method is validated on a modified IEEE 24-bus reliability test system (RTS) and a modified IEEE 3-area RTS while employing the historical data of wind generation. The simulation results verify the importance of accurate modeling of short-term uncertainty of wind power for operation risk assessment. Further case studies have been performed to analyze the impact of transmission systems on operation risk indices. The computational performance of the framework is also examined.

Smart home scheduling, facilitated by advanced metering, monitoring, and manipulation technology, plays an important role in the energy transition in terms of accommodating intermittent renewable energy and improving energy consumption efficiency. The key functionalities of home energy scheduling are usually implemented by leveraging the flexibility of household appliances, such as thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) and energy storage units, to improve the peak-to-average ratio for utilities and reduce energy bills for customers. However, the consumption patterns of appliances are greatly influenced by a variety of factors, including real-time tariffs, ambient temperature profiles, indoor activities, and solar irradiance. Hence, smart home energy scheduling is a challenging task because most of these impacting factors are stochastic and difficult to predict. To properly model and manage the uncertainty factors associated with smart home appliance scheduling, an economic model predictive control (MPC)-based bilevel smart scheduling scheme is proposed in this paper. The comprehensive modeling of distributed generation and household appliances is performed at the single-household level. The home energy scheduling problem is formulated on two levels, with the upper level emphasizing the economic impact and the lower level focusing on capturing TCL responses. The correlations among different TCLs and their performance under the influence of various uncertainty factors, such as environmental impacts and user behaviors, are considered. The efficiency of the proposed MPC-based bilevel optimization model and the effectiveness of the home energy scheduling strategy in managing uncertainties are validated and illustrated in numerical studies.

Abstract Background Analyses of the effects of pit and fissure sealant have been based on small samples and lack large-scale field evaluation data in China. The aim of this study was to understand the effect of pit and fissure sealant in preventing caries in the first permanent molars (FPMs) of children in Guangzhou. Methods We conducted a population-based cohort study using the database of the pit and fissure sealant program of Guangzhou. The carious status and sealant retention of the FPMs were assessed in 4,822 school children who received pit and fissure sealant 3 years prior to the study. The control group included 4,396 children who had indications for receiving pit and fissure sealant but were not treated and were matched according to sex, age and school. Results In the sealant group, the rate of sealant retention in the FPMs was 72.2%. Background: Findings for associations between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and cardiometabolic risk (CMR) factors are inconsistent, and the interactive association between CRF and fatness with CMR factors is unclear in children. Our study aimed to examine whether CRF and fatness are independently and interactively associated with CMR factors.Methods: We included 5,869 children aged 6–13 years in the analysis. Physical examinations, blood tests, and CRF were measured at baseline and 1 year later. Cardiometabolic risk score (CMRS) was computed by summing Z scores of waist circumference (WC), averaged systolic and diastolic blood pressure, glucose, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C, multiplied by −1), and triglycerides.Results: There was a high correlation between fatness and CRF in both boys and girls. High baseline CRF was independently associated with favorable changes in CMRS, BMI, WC, percent body fat (PBF), total cholesterol, LDL-C, and HDL-C (all P < 0.025). Improved CRF was independently associated with favorable changes in CMRS, BMI, WC, PBF, total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C, triglycerides, and fasting glucose (all P < 0.0321). Baseline BMI was positively associated with changes in CMRS, WC, blood pressure, triglycerides, insulin, and HOMA-IR (all P < 0.0462). Low PBF at baseline was associated with favorable changes in CMRS, BMI, WC, blood pressure, HDL-C, triglycerides, insulin, and HOMA-IR (all P < 0.0423). The percentage of the total effect of baseline CRF on changes in CMRS, triglycerides, HDL-C, PBF, and WC mediated by baseline BMI was 66.0, 61.6, 40.3, 20.7, and 9.2%, respectively. Baseline CRF was a significant mediator for the association between baseline BMI and changes in CMRS (mediated by 4.3%), triglycerides (5.1%), and HDL-C (12.0%). An inverse association was found between baseline CRF and CMRS in children with high baseline BMI/PBF only. Improved CRF was associated with decreased BMI and WC in children with low baseline CRF.Conclusions: Fatness and CRF are each independently associated with changes in CMR factors. Fatness is a major mediator for the association between CRF and CMR factors, whereas the association between fatness and CMR factors is also mediated by CRF. The beneficial effect of high CRF on CMR factors was more evident in obese or unfit children.

Abstract Background The relationship between body dissatisfaction (BD) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has been well documented in adolescents and adults but is less clear in children, particularly in China. The aims of this study were to describe body image perception and dissatisfaction and to examine their effects on HRQoL among primary school students in Guangzhou, China. Methods A total of 5734 children aged 8–12 years from 29 schools completed self-report questionnaires, which included the Paediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0 for measuring HRQoL and Ma figural stimuli for measuring BD. Based on their level of BD, the children were divided into three groups: no dissatisfaction, mild dissatisfaction and moderate or high dissatisfaction. Based on the children’s perceptions of their own body image, the groups were also categorized into just right, too fat and too thin groups. Height and weight were objectively measured using standardized methods, and a BMI z-score was derived using the age- and sex-specific WHO references from 2007 for children aged 5–19 years. Weight status was classified as underweight, healthy weight, overweight or obese. Increasing deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs) is re-sculpturing the modern power systems in recent years. Future smart power distribution systems should be competent at accommodating extensive integration of DERs and managing the associated uncertainties at the distribution level. The electricity market has been proved to be an efficient way to employ market signals to direct behaviors of users and DERs with large capacity and homogeneous pattern. However, existing market frameworks cannot effectively handle a large number of small-scale DERs due to their diverse characteristics and arbitrary behavior patterns. In this context, an aggregated model which can represent and manage a diverse collection of DER, load, and storage is proposed. An additional trading platform, namely the energy sharing market, is established to reinforce the coordination and collaboration among various aggregators as well as operators. Energy sharing scheme is applied and a corresponding dynamic dispatch platform is designed to solve the crowdsource problem. The efficiency of the proposed model is validated by the numerical studies, and the market performance and impacts of energy sharing on the power systems are illustrated.

Cyber security significantly relies on the dynamic communities in social networks. The location-based social network (LBSN) is a new type of social system that has sprung up recently that. It turns traditional social networks into heterogeneous networks by incorporating location information, which is used as the medium between the real world and the online social networks, thus bringing new challenges to the community discovery problems. This paper proposes a LBSN homogeneous network model (LSHNM) based on the user social relations and temp-spatial behaviors to calculate the user similarity relations in multi-dimensional features and construct LBSN isomorphism network topology, which can be used to improve cyber security practices. After that non-negative matrix decomposition (NMF) is used to find communities from above isomorphism network topology. The experimental results show that the LSHNM can find more satisfactory community structures.

Summary: By investigating the long-term observations at Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Southern Great Plains (SGP), we find that the routinely used Beer-Bouguer-Lambert law and the models that empirically separate direct normal irradiance (DNI) from measurements of global horizontal irradiance (GHI) have dramatic and unexpected bias in computing cloudy-sky DNI. This bias has led to tremendous uncertainty in estimating the electricity generation by solar energy conversion systems. To effectively reduce the bias, this study proposes a physical solution of all-sky DNI that computes solar radiation in the infinite-narrow beam along the sun direction and the scattered radiation falls within the circumsolar region. In sharp contrast with the other DNI models, this method uses a finite-surface integration algorithm that computes solar radiation in differential solid angles and efficiently infers its contribution to a surface perpendicular to the sun direction. Abstract In recent years, the increasing penetration level of renewable generation and combined heat and power (CHP) technology in power systems is leading to significant changes in energy production and consumption patterns. As a result, the integrated planning and optimal operation of a multi-carrier energy (MCE) system have aroused widespread concern for reasonable utilization of multiple energy resources and efficient accommodation of renewable energy sources. In this context, an integrated demand response (IDR) scheme is designed to coordinate the operation of power to gas (P2G) devices, heat pumps, diversified storage devices and flexible loads within an extended modeling framework of energy hubs. Subsequently, the optimal dispatch of interconnected electricity, natural gas and heat systems is implemented considering the interactions among multiple energy carriers by utilizing the bi-level optimization method. Finally, the proposed method is demonstrated with a 4-bus multi-energy system and a larger test case comprised of a revised IEEE 118-bus power system and a 20-bus Belgian natural gas system.

Miniaturized flexible microsupercapacitors (MSCs) that can be integrated into self-powered sensing systems, detecting networks, and implantable devices have shown great potential to perfect the stand-alone functional units owing to the robust security, continuously improved energy density, inherence high power density, and long service life. This review summarizes the recent progress made in the development of flexible MSCs and their application in integrated wearable electronics. To meet requirements for the scalable fabrication, minimization design, and easy integration of the flexible MSC, the typical assembled technologies consist of ink printing, photolithography, screen printing, laser etching, etc., are provided. Then the guidelines regarding the electrochemical performance improvement of the flexible MSC by materials design, devices construction, and electrolyte optimization are considered. The integrated prototypes of flexible MSC-powered systems, such as self-driven photodetection systems, wearable sweat monitoring units are also discussed. Finally, the future challenges and perspectives of flexible MSC are envisioned.

Abstract Regarded as a long-term, large capacity energy storage solution, commercialized power-to-gas (PtG) technology has attracted much research attention in recent years. PtG plants and natural gas-fired power plants can form a close loop between an electric power system and a natural gas network. An interconnected multi-energy system is believed to be a solution to the future efficient and environmental friendly energy systems. However, some crucial issues require in-depth analysis before PtG plants can be economically implemented. This paper discusses current development status and potential application of PtG plants in the future interconnected multi-energy systems, and further analyzes the costs and benefits of PtG plants in different application scenarios. In general, the PtG plants are not economical efficient based on current technologies and costs. But the situation is likely to change with the development of PtG technologies and interconnected operation of gas-electricity energy system.

BackgroundLittle evidence from developing countries on dietary transition demonstrates the effects of comprehensive childhood obesity interventions on dietary diversity and food variety among younger children. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of comprehensive childhood obesity interventions on dietary diversity among younger children.MethodsA total of 4846 children aged 7-13 years were included based on a multicenter randomized controlled trial for childhood obesity interventions in 38 primary schools. Nutrition education intervention (NE), physical activity intervention (PA) and comprehensive intervention including both NE and PA (CNP) were carried out separately for 2 semesters. Dietary Diversity Score (DDS9 and DDS28 for 9 and 28 food groupings, respectively), Food Variety Score (FVS, the number of food items) and the proportions of different foods consumed were calculated according to the food intake records collected with the 24-h dietary recall method.ResultsThe intervention effects per day of comprehensive intervention group were 0 (95% Confidence Interval (CI): 0, 0.1; p = 0.382) on DDS9, 0.1 (95% CI: -0.1, 0.2; p = 0.374) on DDS28 and 0.1 (95% CI: -0.1, 0.3; p = 0.186) on FVS of overall diet, which was 0.1 (95% CI: 0, 0.1; p < 0.001) on DDS9, 0 (95% CI: 0, 0.1; p = 0.168) on DDS28 and 0.1 (95% CI: 0, 0.1; p = 0.067) on FVS of dietary scores of breakfast only. Additionally, CNP group had greater increases in cereals, meat and fruits, and more decreases in eggs, fish and dried legumes consumption proportions as compared with the control group. Decreasing side effect on dietary diversity and food variety were found for PA intervention, but not for NE intervention only.ConclusionsThough the comprehensive obesity intervention didn't improve the overall dietary diversity per day, the positive intervention effects were observed on breakfast foods and some foods' consumption.

In recent years, much attention has been devoted to the development and applications of smart grid technologies, with special emphasis on flexible resources such as distributed generations (DGs), energy storages, active loads, and electric vehicles (EVs). Demand response (DR) is expected to be an effective means for accommodating the integration of renewable energy generations and mitigating their power output fluctuations. Despite their potential contributions to power system secure and economic operation, uncoordinated operations of these flexible resources may result in unexpected congestions in the distribution system concerned. In addition, the behaviors and impacts of flexible resources are normally highly uncertain and complex in deregulated electricity market environments. In this context, this paper aims to propose a DR based congestion management strategy for smart distribution systems. The general framework and procedures for distribution congestion management is first presented. A bi-level optimization model for the day-ahead congestion management based on the proposed framework is established. Subsequently, the robust optimization approach is introduced to alleviate negative impacts introduced by the uncertainties of DG power outputs and market prices. The economic efficiency and robustness of the proposed congestion management strategy is demonstrated by an actual 0.4 kV distribution system in Denmark.

Abstract Background Socioeconomic inequalities in childhood obesity prevalence differ according to a country’s stage of nutrition transition. The aim of this study was to determine which socioeconomic factors influence inequalities in obesity prevalence in Chinese primary school children living in an urban setting. Methods We assessed obesity prevalence among 9917 children aged 5–12 years from a stratified random sample of 29 state-funded (residents) and private (migrants) schools in Guangzhou, China. Height and weight were objectively measured using standardised methods and overweight (+1 SD +2 SD) were defined using the World Health Organisation reference 2007. Socioeconomic characteristics were ascertained through parental questionnaires. Generalised Linear Mixed Models with schools as a random effect were used to compare likelihood of overweight/obesity among children in private, with public schools, adjusting for child age and sex, maternal and paternal BMI and education level, and household per-capita income. Results The prevalence of overweight/obesity was 20.0 % (95 % CI 19.1 %–20.9 %) in resident compared with 14.3 % (95 % CI 13.0 %–15.4 %) in migrant children. In the adjusted model, the odds of overweight/obesity remained higher among resident children (OR 1.36; 1.16–1.59), was higher in boys compared with girls (OR 2.56; 2.24–2.93), and increased with increasing age (OR 2.78; 1.95–3.97 in 11–12 vs 5–6 year olds), per-capita household income (OR 1.27; 1.01–1.59 in highest vs lowest quartile) and maternal education (OR 1.51; 1.16–1.97 in highest vs lowest). Socioeconomic differences were most marked in older boys, and were only statistically significant in resident children. Conclusions The socioeconomic gradient for childhood obesity in China is the reverse of the patterns seen in countries at more advanced stages of the obesity epidemic. This presents an opportunity to intervene and prevent the onset of social inequalities that are likely to ensue with further economic development. The marked gender inequality in obesity needs further exploration.

This study aimed to determine the antibiotic susceptibility and resistance related genotypes of Mycobacterium abscessus. One hundred sixty-two clinical isolates were collected. Genomic data were obtained by whole genome sequencing. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis was conducted using the NCBI GenBank database and BLAST algorithm. The following genes were of interest: erm(41), rrl and rrs. Erm(41) was further divided into 3 sequevars: erm(41)C28, erm(41)T28, and M type [erm(41) with deletions in nucleotides 64 and 65, or 159 through 432]. Antibiotic susceptibility was assessed at 3 days (early reading time, ERT) and 14 days (late reading time, LRT) after clarithromycin (CLA) treatment. Three patterns of CLA resistance were observed. (1) Fifty-five (acquired resistance) isolates [45 erm(41)T28, 1 erm(41)C28 and 9 M type] exhibited MIC ≥8 mg/L at ERT; among these isolates, 10 had an rrl 2058/2059 mutation. (2) Sixty-two subsp. abscessus and 2 subsp. massiliense (induced resistance) isolates exhibited MIC ≤4 mg/L at ERT, but ≥8 mg/L at LRT. (3) Forty-three (sensitive and intermediate) isolates [14 erm(41)C28, 1 erm(41)T28, and 28 M type] exhibited MIC ≤4 mg/L at both ERT and LRT. No rrs 1408 mutation or other meaningful SNP was found in 3 amikacin-resistant isolates. No correlation was found between rrl, erm(41) or rrs and susceptibility to the 8 other antibiotics tested. The rrl and erm(41) genotypes could predict the CLA resistance of M. abscessus clinical isolates. China has a large number of CLA-resistant M. abscessus isolates with erm(41)T28 sequevar. Treatment of M. abscessus infections should be based upon a comprehensive consideration of factors that include genotype and geographic location.

This study reports a proof-of-concept study as a step toward synthetic-biological morphogenesis of tissues. Events in normal animal development usually follow the sequence: patterning → differential gene expression → morphogenesis. A synthetic biological approach to development might follow a similar sequence, with each stage under the control of synthetic biological modules. The authors have constructed and published a synthetic module that drives self-organised patterning of mammalian cell populations into patches of different cell types. Here, as a proof of concept, they extend the self-patterning module with a morphogenetic effector that drives elective cell death in just one cell type. The result is a self-constructing pattern of two cell types, one of which can be selectively eliminated to leave remaining cells as a monolayer with a net-like structure. This simple device demonstrates and validates the idea of coupling synthetic biological morphogenetic effectors to synthetic biological patterning devices. It opens the path to engineering more sophisticated structures and, perhaps eventually, tissues.

In developing countries, obesity traditionally affectsmore affluent children, butis spreading to a wider social group. Understanding the perceivedcontributors can provide valuable insights to plan preventive interventions. We exploreddifferences in the perceived causes of childhood obesity between local and migrant communities in a major Chinese city. We conducted 20 focus groups (137 parents, grandparents, school teachers) and 11semi-structured interviews with school Principals from migrant and local communities in Guangzhou. Data were transcribed and analysed using a thematic approach. We found that Lack of influence from grandparents, who were perceived to promote obesogenic behaviorin local children, fewer opportunities for unhealthy snacking and less pressure for academic attainment leading to moreactive play were interpreted as potential "protective" factors among migrant children. Nevertheless, two perceived causes of obesity were more pronounced in migrant than local children: lack of parental monitoring after-school andunsafe neighborhoods limiting physical-activity. Two barriers that restricted child physical activity were only found in the migrant community: limited home space, and cultural differences, inhabitinginteractive play with local children. Future interventions should consider uniquedeterminants of obesity in children from different social backgrounds, with tailored strategies to prevent further rise of the epidemic.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the C/N ratio on the water state changes during the composting of kitchen waste (KW) and vegetable waste (VW) mixtures. The C/N ratios in KW and VW were 50.70 and 27.07, respectively, and the VW was added to the KW to amend the C/N ratio. Five composting treatments were used, R1 with 0% KW, R2 with 25% KW, R3 with 50% KW, R4 with 75% KW, and R5 with 100% KW, and the initial C/N ratios increased in the order R1 < R2 < R3 < R4 < R5. As the composting process progressed, the capillary water (CW) and multi-molecular-layer water (MMLW) were changed into entrapped water (EW), and a high C/N ratio could delay the changes in the water state. The percentage of EW and CW significantly positively correlated with the C/N ratio during the composting of KW. The composting process performed better in treatments R2 and R3 than in the other treatments, and it was found that treatments R2 and R3 each had a lag phase of around 4 d until the water states started to change.

With the significant decrease in natural gas prices in many parts of the world, the employment of gas turbine (GT) units has increased steadily in recent years. The ever-increasing deployment of GT units is strengthening the interconnections between electric power and natural gas systems, which could provide a higher level of operational flexibility and reliability. As a result, the planning and operation issues in the interconnected electric power and natural gas systems have aroused concern. In these circumstances, the impacts of increasing deployment of GT units in power system operation are studied and evaluated through well-being analysis (WBA). The fast responsive characteristics of GT units are analyzed first, and the definition and adaption of WBA in a power system with increasing deployment of GT units are addressed. Then the equivalent reserve capacity of GT units is estimated, taking demand fluctuations, commitment plans, and operational risks of GT units into account. The WBA of a power system with increasing deployment of GT units is conducted considering the uncertainties of system operation states and renewable energy sources. Finally, the proposed methods are validated through an integrated version of the IEEE 118-bus power system and a 10-bus natural gas system, and the impacts of GT units on power system security under various penetration levels are examined. Simulation results demonstrate that the role of a GT unit as a low-cost electricity producer may conflict with its role as a reserve provider, but through maintaining a proper proportion of idle GT capacities for reserve, the well-being performance of the power system concerned can be significantly improved.
