In this work, the syntheses and characterization by mechanical and dielectric spectroscopies of (1-x) Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3-xBaTiO3 (BNT-100xBT), with x = 0.05, 0.06 and 0.07, lead-free piezoelectric ceramics is reported. Ceramic samples of BNT-BT have been prepared by mixed-oxide method and then conventionally sintered. X-ray diffraction patterns of sintered samples, indicated for BNT-7BT the presence of tetragonal (P4mm) complex perovskite structure, whereas for BNT-5BT and BNT-6BT the samples exhibit a mixture of tetragonal (P4mm) and rhombohedral (R3c) crystalline phases, which reveal the presence of a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) in the BNT-BT system. Measurements of internal friction, Q-1, and the storage modulus, E’, as a function of temperature at various frequencies were carried out in a Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA), in the temperature range from 0ºC to 600ºC. Dielectric profiles are recorded in the frequency range from 1kHz to 100kHz and the temperature range from room temperature to 475ºC. Mechanical loss spectra obtained for investigated compositions of BNT-BT samples showed different frequency-independent anomalies. Two main anomalies for BNT-5BT and BNT-6BT, observed around 100ºC and 430ºC were associated with the ferroelectric-antiferroelectric and antiferroelectricparaelectric phase transitions, respectively. The results obtained from mechanical loss measurements were supported by dielectric relaxation spectra. For BNT-7BT, outside the MPB, four different frequency-independent processes were observed.

Ferroelectric polymorphic phase coexistence, associated with either the presence of a morphotropic phase boundary or a temperature-driven polymorphic phase transition, is currently acknowledged as the key to high piezoelectric activity and is searched when new perovskite materials are developed, like lead-free alternatives to state-of-the-art Pb(Zr,Ti)O3. This requires characterization tools that allow phase coexistence and transitions to be readily identified, among which measurements of the temperature dependences of Young's modulus and mechanical losses by dynamical mechanical analysis stand out as a powerful technique to complement standard electrical characterizations. We report here the application of this technique to (K1-xNax)NbO3-based materials, which are under extensive investigation as environmentally friendly high sensitivity piezoelectrics. The elastic anomalies associated with the different phase transitions are identified and are shown to be distinctively shifted in relation to the dielectric ones. The origin of this discrepancy is discussed with the help of temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy and is proposed to be a characteristic of diffuse phase transitions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Right ventricular (RV) hemodynamic performance determines the prognosis of patients with RV pressure overload. Using ultrafast ultrasound, natural wave velocity (NWV) induced by cardiac valve closure was proposed as a new surrogate to quantify myocardial stiffness., Objectives: This study aimed to assess RV NWV in rodent models and children with RV pressure overload vs control subjects and to correlate NWV with RV hemodynamic parameters., Methods: Six-week-old rats were randomized to pulmonary artery banding (n = 6), Sugen hypoxia-induced pulmonary arterial hypertension (n = 7), or sham (n = 6) groups. They underwent natural wave imaging, echocardiography, and hemodynamic assessment at baseline and 6 weeks postoperatively. The authors analyzed NWV after tricuspid and after pulmonary valve closure (TVC and PVC, respectively). Conductance catheters were used to generate pressure-volume loops. In parallel, the authors prospectively recruited 14 children (7 RV pressure overload; 7 age-matched control subjects) and compared RV NWV with echocardiographic and invasive hemodynamic parameters., Results: NWV significantly increased in RV pressure overload rat models (4.99 ± 0.27 m/s after TVC and 5.03 ± 0.32 m/s after PVC in pulmonary artery banding at 6 weeks; 4.89 ± 0.26 m/s after TVC and 4.84 ± 0.30 m/s after PVC in Sugen hypoxia at 6 weeks) compared with control subjects (2.83 ± 0.15 m/s after TVC and 2.72 ± 0.34 m/s after PVC). NWV after TVC correlated with both systolic and diastolic parameters including RV dP/dt max (r = 0.75; P < 0.005) and RV Ees (r = 0.81; P < 0.005). NWV after PVC correlated with both diastolic and systolic parameters and notably with RV end-diastolic pressure (r = 0.65; P < 0.01). In children, NWV after both right valves closure in RV pressure overload were higher than in healthy volunteers (P < 0.01). NWV after PVC correlated with RV E/E' (r = 0.81; P = 0.008) and with RV chamber stiffness (r = 0.97; P = 0.03)., Conclusions: Both RV early-systolic and early-diastolic myocardial stiffness show significant increase in response to pressure overload. Background: Pediatric hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is associated with adverse events. The contribution of diastolic dysfunction to adverse events is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to explore the association between diastolic phenotype and outcomes in pediatric patients with HCM., Methods: Children <18 years of age with diagnosed with HCM were included. Diastolic function parameters were measured from the first echocardiogram at the time of diagnosis, including Doppler flow velocities, tissue Doppler velocities, and left atrial volume and function. Using principal-component analysis, key features in echocardiographic parameters were identified. The principal components were regressed to freedom from major adverse cardiac events (MACE), defined as implantable cardioverter-defibrillator insertion, myectomy, aborted sudden cardiac death, transplantation, need for mechanical circulatory support, and death., Results: Variables that estimate left ventricular filling pressures were highly collinear and associated with MACE (hazard ratio, 0.86; 95% CI, 0.75-1.00), though this was no longer significant after controlling for left ventricular thickness and genetic variation. Left atrial size parameters adjusted for body surface area were independently associated with outcomes in the covariate-adjusted model (hazard ratio, 0.69; 95% CI, 0.5-0.94). The covariate-adjusted model had an Akaike information criterion of 213, an adjusted R 2 value of 0.78, and a concordance index of 0.82 for association with MACE., Conclusion: Echocardiographic parameters of diastolic dysfunction were associated with MACE in this population study, in combination with the severity of left ventricular hypertrophy and genetic variation. Left atrial size parameters adjusted for body surface area were independently associated with adverse events. Recent studies in adults suggested that extended-interval dosing of rituximab/ocrelizumab (RTX/OCR) larger than 12 months was safe and could improve safety. This was an observational cohort study of very active pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis (PoMS) (median (range) age, 16 (12-17) years) treated with RTX/OCR with 6 month standard-interval dosing ( n = 9) or early extended-interval dosing ( n = 12, median (range) interval 18 months (12-25)). Within a median (range) follow-up of 31 (12-63) months after RTX/OCR onset, one patient (standard-interval) experienced relapse and no patient showed disability worsening or new T2-weighted lesions. Although contemporary outcomes of initial surgical repair of tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) are excellent, the survival of adult patients remains significantly lower than that of the normal population due to the high incidence of heart failure, ventricular arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death. The underlying mechanisms are only partially understood but involve an adverse biventricular response, so-called remodelling, to key stressors such as right ventricular (RV) pressure-and/or volume-overload, myocardial fibrosis, and electro-mechanical dyssynchrony. In this review, we explore risk factors and mechanisms of biventricular remodelling, from histological to electro-mechanical aspects, and the role of imaging in their assessment. Background: Diastolic myocardial stiffness (MS) can serve as a key diagnostic parameter for congenital or acquired heart diseases. Using shear modulus and shear-wave velocity (SWV), shear-wave elastography (SWE) is an emerging ultrasound-based technique that can allow noninvasive assessment of MS. However, MS extrinsic parameters such as left ventricular geometric characteristics could affect shear-wave propagation. The aims of this study were to determine a range of normal values of MS using SWE in age groups of healthy children and young adults and to explore the impact of left ventricular geometric characteristics on SWE., Methods: Sixty healthy volunteers were recruited in the study and divided into 2 groups: neonates (0-1 months old, n = 15) and >1 month old (1 month to 45 years of age, n = 45). SWE was performed using the Verasonics Vantage systems with a phased-array ultrasound probe. The anteroseptal basal segment was assessed in two views. SWE was electrocardiographically triggered during the end-diastolic phase. Conventional echocardiography was performed to assess ventricular function and anatomy. Results are presented as stiffness values along with mean velocity measurements and SDs. Simple and multivariate linear regression analyses were performed., Results: For neonates, mean MS was 1.87 ± 0.79 kPa (range, 0.59-2.91 kPa; mean SWV, 1.37 ± 0.57 m/sec), with high variability and no correlation with age (P = .239). For this age group, no statistically significant correlation was found between MS and any demographic or echocardiographic parameters (P > .05). For the >1 month old group, a mean MS value of 1.67 ± 0.53 kPa was observed (range, 0.6-3 kPa; mean SWV, 1.29 ± 0.49 m/sec) for healthy volunteers. When paired for age, no sex-related difference was observed (P = .55). In univariate linear regression analysis, age (r = 0.83, P < .01), diastolic interventricular septal thickness (r = 0.72, P < .01), and left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (r = 0.67, P < .01) were the parameters with the highest correlation coefficients with MS. In a multiple linear regression analysis incorporating these three parameters as cofounding factors, age was the only statistically significant parameters (r = 0.81, P = .02)., Conclusion: Diastolic MS increases linearly in children and young adults. Diastolic MS correlates more robustly with age than with myocardial and left ventricular geometric characteristics. Background: There is conflicting literature regarding the long-term effect of anthracycline treatment on arterial stiffness. This study assessed local arterial stiffness using ultrafast ultrasound imaging (UUI) in anthracycline treated childhood cancer survivors, at rest and during exercise., Methods: 20 childhood cancer survivors (mean age 21.02 ± 9.45 years) treated with anthracyclines (mean cumulative dose 200.7 ± 126.80 mg/m 2 ) and 21 healthy controls (mean age 26.00 ± 8.91 years) were included. Participants completed a demographic survey, fasting bloodwork for cardiovascular biomarkers, and performed a submaximal exercise test on a semi-supine bicycle. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) was measured in the left common carotid artery by direct pulse wave imaging using UUI at rest and submaximal exercise. Both PWV at the systolic foot (PWV-SF) and dicrotic notch (PWV-DN) were measured. Central (carotid-femoral) PWV was obtained by applanation tonometry. Carotid measurements were taken by conventional ultrasound. Measures were compared using two-tailed Students t -test or Chi-squared test, as appropriate., Results: There was no statistically significant difference ( p  > 0.05) between childhood cancer survivors and healthy controls in demographic parameters (age, sex, weight, height, BMI), blood biomarkers (total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-c, HDL-c, hs-CRP, fasting glucose, insulin, Hb A1c), cardiovascular parameters (intima media thickness, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, carotid diameters, distensibility) or PWV measured by UUI at rest or at exercise. There was also no difference in the cardiovascular adaptation between rest and exercise in the two groups ( p  > 0.05). Sepsis-acquired immunosuppression may play a major role in patients' prognosis through increased risk of secondary infections. Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 1 (TREM-1) is an innate immune receptor involved in cellular activation. Its soluble form (sTREM-1) has been described as a robust marker of mortality in sepsis. The objective of this study was to evaluate its association with the occurrence of nosocomial infections alone or in combination with human leucocyte antigen-DR on monocytes (mHLA-DR)., Design: Observational study., Setting: University Hospital in France., Patients: One hundred sixteen adult septic shock patients as a post hoc study from the IMMUNOSEPSIS cohort (NCT04067674)., Interventions: None., Measurements and Main Results: Plasma sTREM-1 and monocyte HLA-DR were measured at day 1 or 2 (D1/D2), D3/D4, and D6/D8 after admission. Associations with nosocomial infection were evaluated through multivariable analyses. At D6/D8, both markers were combined, and association with increased risk of nosocomial infection was evaluated in the subgroup of patients with most deregulated markers in a multivariable analysis with death as a competing risk. Significantly decreased mHLA-DR at D6/D8 and increased sTREM-1 concentrations were measured at all time points in nonsurvivors compared with survivors. Decreased mHLA-DR at D6/D8 was significantly associated with increased risk of secondary infections after adjustment for clinical parameters with a subdistribution hazard ratio of 3.61 (95% CI, 1.39-9.34; p = 0.008). At D6/D8, patients with persistently high sTREM-1 and decreased mHLA-DR presented with a significantly increased risk of infection (60%) compared with other patients (15.7%). Type I and III interferons (IFN-I/λ) are important antiviral mediators against SARS-CoV-2 infection. Here, we demonstrate that plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDC) are the predominant IFN-I/λ source following their sensing of SARS-CoV-2-infected cells. Mechanistically, this short-range sensing by pDCs requires sustained integrin-mediated cell adhesion with infected cells. In turn, pDCs restrict viral spread by an IFN-I/λ response directed toward SARS-CoV-2-infected cells. This specialized function enables pDCs to efficiently turn-off viral replication, likely via a local response at the contact site with infected cells. By exploring the pDC response in SARS-CoV-2 patients, we further demonstrate that pDC responsiveness inversely correlates with the severity of the disease. The pDC response is particularly impaired in severe COVID-19 patients. Overall, we propose that pDC activation is essential to control SARS-CoV-2-infection. Dendritic cells (DCs) are key regulators of both innate and adaptive immunity via varied functions, including cytokine production and antigen presentation. Plasmacytoid DC (pDC) is a DC subset specialized in the production of type I and III interferons (IFNs). They are thus pivotal players of the host antiviral response during the acute phase of infection by genetically distant viruses. The pDC response is primarily triggered by the endolysosomal sensors Toll-like receptors, which recognize nucleic acids from pathogens. In some pathologic contexts, pDC response can also be triggered by host nucleic acids, hereby contributing to the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, such as, e.g., systemic lupus erythematosus. Importantly, recent in vitro studies from our laboratory and others uncovered that pDCs sense viral infections when a physical contact is established with infected cells. This specialized synapse-like feature enables a robust type I and III IFN secretion at the infected site. Therefore, this concentrated and confined response likely limits the correlated deleterious impacts of excessive cytokine production to the host, notably due to tissue damages. Echocardiography has evolved the first-line imaging for diagnosis and management of pediatric and congenital heart disease all over the world. While it recognized as essential component of pediatric cardiac care delivery, organization of pediatric echocardiography services is very heterogeneous across the world, mainly related to significant differences in material and human resources in heterogeneous health care systems. In this paper, we focus on the role of pediatric sonographers, defined as expert technicians in pediatric echocardiography. While in some services sonographers are an essential part of the organizational structure, other laboratories operate only with physicians trained in echocardiography. The impact of sonographers on clinical, academic and financial performance will be discussed. Two organizational models (with and without sonographers) will be compared, and the advantages and disadvantages of each model will be evaluated. Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic performances of 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose ( 18 F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) in congenital heart disease (CHD) patients with pulmonary prosthetic valve or conduit endocarditis (PPVE) suspicion., Background: PPVE is a major issue in the growing CHD population. Diagnosis is challenging, and usual imaging tools are not always efficient or validated in this specific population. Particularly, the diagnostic yield of 18 F-FDG PET/CT remains poorly studied in PPVE., Methods: A retrospective multicenter study was conducted in 8 French tertiary centers. Children and adult CHD patients who underwent 18 F-FDG PET/CT in the setting of PPVE suspicion between January 2010 and May 2020 were included. The cases were initially classified as definite, possible, or rejected PPVE regarding the modified Duke criteria and finally by the Endocarditis Team consensus. The result of 18 F-FDG PET/CT had been compared with final diagnosis consensus used as gold-standard in our study., Results: A total of 66 cases of PPVE suspicion involving 59 patients (median age 23 years, 73% men) were included. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of 18 F-FDG PET/CT in PPVE suspicion were respectively: 79.1% (95% CI: 68.4%-91.4%), 72.7% (95% CI: 60.4%-85.0%), 91.9% (95% CI: 79.6%-100.0%), and 47.1% (95% CI: 34.8%-59.4%). 18 F-FDG PET/CT findings would help to correctly reclassify 57% (4 of 7) of possible PPVE to definite PPVE., Conclusions: Using 18 F-FDG PET/CT improves the diagnostic accuracy of the Duke criteria in CHD patients with suspected PPVE. The use of photonic concepts to achieve nanoactuation based on light triggering requires complex architectures to obtain the desired effect. In this context, the recent discovery of reversible optical control of the domain configuration in ferroelectrics offers a light-ferroic interplay that can be easily controlled. To date, however, the optical control of ferroelectric domains has been explored in single crystals, although polycrystals are technologically more desirable because they can be manufactured in a scalable and reproducible fashion. Here we report experimental evidence for a large photostrain response in polycrystalline BaTiO 3 that is comparable to their electrostrain values. Domains engineering is performed through grain size control, thereby evidencing that charged domain walls appear to be the functional interfaces for the light-driven domain switching. The findings shed light on the design of high-performance photoactuators based on ferroelectric ceramics, providing a feasible alternative to conventional voltage-driven nanoactuators.

Understanding the physics behind changes in dielectric permittivity and mechanical response with temperature and frequency in lead-free ferroic materials is a fundamental key to achieve optimal properties and to guarantee good performance in the technological applications envisaged. In this work, dense [Formula: see text] (BNT) electroceramics were prepared through solid-state reaction of high-grade oxide reagents, followed by sintering at high temperature (1393 K for 3 h). In good agreement with previous reports in the literature, the thermal behaviour of dielectric response from these BNT materials showed the occurrence of a high-temperature diffuse-like permittivity peak, whose origin has been so far controversial. Thermally stimulated depolarization current, impedance and mechanical spectroscopies measurements were here conducted, over a wide range of temperature and frequency, to get a deep insight into the mechanism behind of this event. The approach included considering both as-sintered and reduced BNT samples, from which it is demonstrated that the broad high-temperature dielectric peak originates from interfacial polarization involving oxygen vacancies-related space-charge effects that develop at the grain-to-grain contacts. This mechanism, that contributes to the anomalous behavior observed in the mechanical response at low frequencies, could also be responsible for the presence of ferroelastic domains up to high temperatures.

Li- and Ta-modified K 0.5 Na 0.5 NbO 3 compounds are among the most promising lead-free ferroelectrics for high-sensitivity piezoelectric ceramic materials, and are potentially capable of replacing Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 . They are also being investigated as piezoelectric components in environmentally friendly magnetoelectric composites. However, most suitable modifications for this application have not been identified. We report here a simulation study of how the magnetoelectric voltage responses of layered composite structures based on Li x (K 0.5 Na 0.5 ) 1 - x Nb 1 - y Ta y O 3 varies with the chemical composition of the piezoelectric. Instead of relying on material coefficients from the literature, which would have required using different sources, an ad hoc set of materials was prepared. This demanded tailoring preparation by conventional means to obtain dense ceramics while controlling alkali volatilization, perovskite phase and microstructure, as well as characterizing their dielectric, elastic and electromechanical properties. This provided the set of relevant material coefficients as a function of composition, which was used to obtain the magnetoelectric responses of model layered structures including a reference magnetostrictive spinel oxide by simulation. The piezoelectric material leading to the highest magnetoelectric coefficient was identified, and shown to be different to that showing the highest piezoelectric coefficient. This reflects the dependence of the magnetoelectric response on all material coefficients, along with the complex interplay between composition, processing and properties in K 0.5 Na 0.5 NbO 3 -based ceramics., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

The fallopian tube is thought to be the site of origin of most high-grade serous carcinomas (HGSCs). However, how often the tube is abnormal in the setting of other ovarian tumors is unknown. The aim of this study is to define the frequency of tubal abnormalities in the tumoral (n = 245) and nontumoral (n = 184) setting. We found that in ovarian tumors, 52.2% of the tubes were normal, while 39.2% were affected by the tumor. Abnormal tubes were found in 80% of HGSCs, in 21% of mucinous carcinomas, in 83.3% of seromucinous carcinomas, in 33.3% of endometrioid carcinomas, in 20% of clear-cell carcinomas, and in 10.5% of borderline tumors. Among normal tubes, almost 70% were histologically normal; transitional metaplasia was present in 17.4%, endometriosis in 8.1%, and adenofibroma in 2.2%, and 1.1% had an incidental serous intraepithelial tubal carcinoma. To conclude, the fallopian tube is abnormal in most serous carcinomas, and in a smaller number of endometrioid, clear-cell and mucinous carcinomas as well as borderline tumors. Further to conventional linear, branched, crosslinked, and dendritic polymers, single chain cyclized/knotted polymers (SCKPs) have emerged as a new class of polymer structure with unique properties. Herein, the development of bacteria-resistant SCKPs is reported and the effect of this structure on the resistance of polymer materials to bacteria is investigated. Four SCKPs were synthesized by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) homopolymerization of multivinyl monomers (MVMs) and then crosslinked by UV light to form SCKP films. Regardless of MVM type used, the resulting SCKP films showed much higher resistance to bacteria, and up to 75 % less bacterial attachment and biofilm formation, in comparison with the corresponding non-SCKP films. This is due to the altered surface morphology and hydrophobicity of the SCKP films. Recent research on literacy has highlighted the impact of affective factors on learning to read. Among these factors, attitudes toward reading have been clearly shown to influence the development of reading skills and academic success. Nevertheless, differences in children's attitudes across schooling have yet to be properly documented, especially for the French language and the transition between elementary and secondary education. In this cross-sectional study, our goal was to gauge the attitudes of French-speaking pupils across this transitional period. We therefore administered a computer-based questionnaire to 469 pupils in Grades 5 to 8 in Quebec (Canada), to gather their views about leisure reading and academic reading. Results showed that their stated attitudes toward reading remained stable across the final 2 years of elementary school, as well as across the first 2 years of middle school, but differences were observed for the transition from one education level to the next, with stated attitudes toward reading being less positive in the latter. This effect, which was observed for both leisure and academic reading, concerned girls and boys alike. We discuss possible explanations for these differences in reading attitudes at this juncture in children's schooling.

Synthetic reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive biomaterials have emerged as a useful platform for regulating critical aspects of ROS-induced pathologies and can improve such hostile microenvironments. Here, we report a series of new hyperbranched poly(β-hydrazide ester) macromers (HB-PBHEs) with disulfide moieties synthesized via an "A2 + B4" Michael addition approach. The three-dimensional structure of HB-PBHEs with multiacrylate end groups endows the macromers with rapid gelation capabilities to form (1) injectable hydrogels via cross-linking with thiolated hyaluronic acid and (2) robust UV-cross-linked hydrogels. The disulfide-containing macromers and hydrogels exhibit H 2 O 2 -responsive degradation compared with the counterparts synthesized by a dihydrazide monomer without disulfide moieties. The cell viability under a high ROS environment can be well-maintained under the protection of the disulfide containing hydrogels.

Ovarian borderline tumors can show histologic features, such as different degrees of cellular proliferation, eosinophilic cells, autoimplants, and adenofibromatous architecture, the importance of which is not known. The aim of the study was to describe these features and correlate them with clinical characteristics. Eighty-three ovarian borderline tumors were studied for the aforementioned features. These were correlated with clinicopathologic features. Epithelial proliferation was associated with the T stage in serous tumors (P=0.0009), but not in mucinous tumors (P=0.97). It was positively associated with bilateral tumors (P=0.01) and the presence of autoimplants (P<0.0001). It was associated with the presence of eosinophilic cells, as tumors with extensive eosinophilic cells had a mean proliferation of 80.7%, for those with no such cells it was 23.8% (P<0.0001), and for those with a limited presence of eosinophilic cells it was 48.7% (P=0.03). Cellular proliferation was not associated with the size of the tumor. An adenofibromatous architecture was associated with unilateral tumors (P=0.02) and showed a trend (P=0.08) with regard to T stage in serous tumors. It was not associated with the size of the tumor. The presence of autoimplants was marginally associated (P=0.07) with bilateral tumors and it was not associated with the size of the tumor or the T stage. The presence of eosinophilic cells was not associated with the T stage, the size of the tumor, or bilateral tumors. The degree of epithelial proliferation, autoimplants, adenofibromatous architecture, and the presence of eosinophilic cells are important features in ovarian borderline tumors.

FOXA1 is a transcription factor essential for the binding and action of other transcription factors on the chromatin. It is the major regulator of endoderm differentiation. It has important roles in breast, prostate and endometrial cancer. It has never been studied in ovarian tumours. The aim of this study was to investigate its expression in ovarian epithelial neoplasms. A total of 195 primary ovarian epithelial borderline or malignant tumours were immunohistochemically studied for the expression of FOXA1. Nineteen percent of the tumours strongly and diffusely expressed FOXA1. Of these, 75.7% belong to the mucinous category (p < 0.0001). Seventy-five per cent of mucinous borderline tumours and 46.7% of mucinous carcinomas overexpressed FOXA1. Brenner tumours also expressed FOXA1. FOXA1 was rarely expressed in serous (6/115) and endometrioid tumours (1/11). Clear cell tumours were completely negative (0/16). Of normal structures, ciliated tubal cells, Walthard nests and transitional metaplasias of the tubal-mesothelial junction, all strongly expressed FOXA1. Background: Seromucinous ovarian tumors are rare and not adequately described in the literature and this is especially true for seromucinous carcinomas., Aim of the Study: To describe histological and clinical features of these tumors in comparison with the rest of ovarian epithelial tumors., Materials and Methods: Two hundred and forty one (241) ovarian tumors, borderline (n=92) or malignant (n=149), treated surgically without neoadjuvant chemotherapy, were examined., Results: Seromucinous borderline (SMBT) and malignant tumors (SMC) comprised 7.8% (n=7) and 4% (n=6) of all borderline tumors and carcinomas, respectively, studied. Mean age of diagnosis was 63.2 and 68.3years and mean size was 6.4cm and 12cm for SMBT and SMC, respectively. Seromucinous tumors were associated with endometriosis in 23.1% of the cases and they were bilateral in 30.8%. Microscopically, variety in cellular composition, papillary architecture and development into thick walled, occasionally muscular, cysts were the main findings. Medullary/paraovarian/tubal or deeply cortical localization was also characteristic. Stage predicted overall and progression-free survival (p<0.0001 and p=0.03, respectively). Five-year survival was 62% for patients with high grade serous carcinoma, 55% for seromucinous carcinoma, 100% for endometrioid carcinoma, 75% for clear cell carcinoma, and 80% for patients with mucinous carcinoma. Differences were not however statistically significant., Conclusion: Seromucinous tumors have unique features that support their classification as a different entity. Their localization and their often thick fibrous or/and muscular wall provides further evidence for an histogenesis from the secondary Müllerian system or vestigial structures., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Inc.
