Abstract

We investigate in stationary regime on the linear plasma device OMT-2 the methods of plasma heating by electromagnetic waves, interaction of electromagnetic waves with magnetoactive plasma and plasma turbulence and transport processes in the trap. We use ultra-high frequency (UHF) contactless method to fill the open magnetic trap by plasma. We have proposed new method of open magnetic trap filling with plasma. Namely, plasma is injected in the trap along the magnetic field from independent stationary UHF source where plasma is formed in ECR regime. Abstract

Methods of plasma heating by electromagnetic waves, interaction of electro-magnetic waves with magnetoactive plasma, plasma turbulence and transport processes are investigated in the trap of the linear plasma device OMT2. An ultrahigh frequency (UHF) contactless method is used to fill the open magnetic trap by plasma. We propose a new method of open magnetic trap filling with plasma whereby plasma is injected in the trap along the magnetic field from an independent stationary UHF source. The source is located outside the trap and plasma formation in it takes place in the strongly nonuniform magnetic field, in the electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) regime by means of the UHF power. In this paper we study the efficiency of open magnetic trap filling by plasma and plasma low frequency (LF) oscillations in the trap.

Abstract

The effect of severe plastic deformation on the deuterium retention in tungsten exposed to highflux low-energy plasma (flux ∼ 1024D/m2/s, energy ∼ 50 eV, and fluence up to 3 × 1026D/m2) at the plasma generator Pilot-PSI was studied by thermal desorption spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The desorption spectra in both reference and plastically deformed samples were deconvolved into three contributions attributed to the detrapping from dislocations, deuteriumvacancy clusters, and pores, respectively. The plastically induced deformation, resulting in high dislocation density, does not change the positions of the three peaks, but alters their amplitudes as compared to the reference material. The appearance of blisters detected by scanning electron microscopy and the desorption peak attributed to the release from pores (i.e., deuterium bubbles) were suppressed in the plastically deformed samples but only up to a certain fluence. Beyond 5 × 1025D/m2, the release from the bubbles in the deformed material is essentially higher than in the reference material. Based on the presented results, we suggest that a dense dislocation network increases the incubation dose needed for the appearance of blisters, associated with deuterium bubbles, by offering numerous nucleation sites for deuterium clusters eventually transforming into deuterium-vacancy clusters by punching out jogs on dislocation lines. Abstract

The effect of helium (He) plasma exposure, and associated surface modifications, on the thermal shock resistance of tungsten (W) under ITER relevant steady state and transient heat and particle loads was studied. W samples were exposed to steady state and pulsed He plasmas at surface base temperatures from 670 to 1170 K. The same exposures were repeated in hydrogen (H) to allow a direct comparison of the role of the ion species on the thermal shock resistance. Exposure to He plasma pulses caused the formation of fine cracking network on W samples which occurred at a higher density and smaller depths compared to H pulsed plasma irradiation. The peak temperature reached during an ELM-like plasma pulse increased by a factor ~1.45 over the 100 s of He plasma exposure, indicating a deterioration of the thermal properties. Transient loading experiments were also performed using a high power pulsed laser during He plasma exposure, showing a significant modification of the target thermal response caused by the surface damage. The effect of He-induced morphology changes on the thermal response modification was found to be very small compared to that of transient-induced damage.

32. Sustainable Plasma Gasification Treatment of Plastic Waste: Evaluating Environmental, Economic, and Strategic Dimensions.

Abstract

The conversion of waste to energy is an essential process in the Middle East, especially in Saudi Arabia, where it plays a crucial role in waste management. The annual analysis of the decomposition hazards of the landfills in the city of Makkah showed that they ranged from 168,000 Mg in 1994 to 297,000 Mg in 2022. The emission costs of pollution ranged from 4 million in 1994 to 7 million in 2022. The number of gas emissions of plastic waste accumulating in the analyzed landfill has increased from 128,000 Mg in 1994 to 227,000 Mg in 2022. The thermal plasmas used were produced by air plasma torches, which are an essential part of plasma reactors. The operational characteristics of air plasma torches were investigated at a flow rate of 10-30 g/s, including current-voltage characteristics, applied power, applied flow rate, average temperatures of the exiting plasma jet ranging from 15,000 to 19,000 K, average velocity of the exiting plasma jet (1677.3-2763.2) m/s, wavelength of the emitted radiation ranging from 153 to 193 nm, and the corresponding beam lengths ranging from 400 to 450 mm. The proposed plasma gasification is the greenest method for processing plastic waste in the light of ecological, economic, and strategic visions with an amount of recovered pyrolysis oil in the year 2022 of 3.17 × 10 5 tons with an equivalent energy of 12.55 × 109 MJ, with an output efficiency value equal to 81%.
