The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Augmented Reality (AR) is set to transform satellite Assembly, Integration, and Testing (AIT) processes by enhancing precision, minimizing human error, and improving operational efficiency in cleanroom environments. This paper presents a technical description of the European Space Agency's (ESA) project "AI for AR in Satellite AIT," which combines real-time computer vision and AR systems to assist technicians during satellite assembly. Leveraging Microsoft HoloLens 2 as the AR interface, the system delivers context-aware instructions and real-time feedback, tackling the complexities of object recognition and 6D pose estimation in AIT workflows. All AI models demonstrated over 70% accuracy, with the detection model exceeding 95% accuracy, indicating a high level of performance and reliability. A key contribution of this work lies in the effective use of synthetic data for training AI models in AR applications, addressing the significant challenges of obtaining real-world datasets in highly dynamic satellite environments, as well as the creation of the Segmented Anything Model for Automatic Labelling (SAMAL), which facilitates the automatic annotation of real data, achieving speeds up to 20 times faster than manual human annotation. The findings demonstrate the efficacy of AI-driven AR systems in automating critical satellite assembly tasks, setting a foundation for future innovations in the space industry.

This paper describes Fields2Cover, a novel open source library for coverage path planning (CPP) for agricultural vehicles. While there are several CPP solutions nowadays, there have been limited efforts to unify them into an open source library and provide benchmarking tools to compare their performance. Fields2Cover provides a framework for planning coverage paths, developing novel techniques, and benchmarking state-of-the-art algorithms. The library features a modular and extensible architecture that supports various vehicles and can be used for a variety of applications, including farms. Its core modules are: a headland generator, a swath generator, a route planner and a path planner. An interface to the Robot Operating System (ROS) is also supplied as an add-on. In this paper, the functionalities of the library for planning a coverage path in agriculture are demonstrated using 8 state-of-the-art methods and 7 objective functions in simulation and field experiments., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

Dissipation of electromagnetic energy through absorption is a fundamental process that underpins phenomena ranging from photovoltaics to photography, analytical spectroscopy, photosynthesis, and human vision. Absorption is also a dynamic process that depends on the duration of the optical illumination. Here we report on the resonant plasmonic absorption of a nanostructured metamaterial and the non-resonant absorption of an unstructured gold film at different optical pulse durations. By examining the absorption in travelling and standing waves, we observe a plasmonic relaxation time of 11 fs as the characteristic transition time. The metamaterial acts as a beam-splitter with low absorption for shorter pulses, while as a good absorber for longer pulses. The transient nature of the absorption puts a frequency limit of ~90 THz on the bandwidth of coherently-controlled, all-optical switching devices, which is still a thousand times faster than other leading switching technologies., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Multi-photon absorption processes have a nonlinear dependence on the amplitude of the incident optical field i.e. the number of photons. However, multi-photon absorption is generally weak and multi-photon events occur with extremely low probability. Consequently, it is extremely challenging to engineer quantum nonlinear devices that operate at the single photon level and the majority of quantum technologies have to rely on single photon interactions. Here, we demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that exploiting coherent absorption of N = 2 N00N states makes it possible to enhance the number of two-photon states that are absorbed. An absorbing metasurface placed inside a Sagnac-style interferometer into which we inject an N = 2 N00N state, exhibits two-photon absorption with 40.5% efficiency, close to the theoretical maximum. This high probability of simultaneous absorption of two photons holds the promise for applications in fields that require multi-photon upconversion but are hindered by high peak intensities., Comment: 13 page, 5 figures

Quantum nonlocality, i.e. the presence of strong correlations in spatially seperated systems which are forbidden by local realism, lies at the heart of quantum communications and quantum computing. Here, we use polarization-entangled photon pairs to demonstrate a nonlocal control of absorption of light in a plasmonic structure. Through the detection of one photon with a polarization-sensitive device, we can almost deterministically prevent or allow absorption of a second, remotely located photon. We demonstrate this with pairs of photons, one of which is absorbed by coupling into a plasmon of a thin metamaterial absorber in the path of a standing wave of an interferometer. Thus, energy dissipation of specific polarization states on a heat-sink is remotely controlled, promising opportunities for probabilistic quantum gating and controlling plasmon-photon conversion and entanglement., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

The technologies of heating, photovoltaics, water photocatalysis and artificial photosynthesis depend on the absorption of light and novel approaches such as coherent absorption from a standing wave promise total dissipation of energy. Extending the control of absorption down to very low light levels and eventually to the single photon regime is of great interest yet remains largely unexplored. Here we demonstrate the coherent absorption of single photons in a deeply sub-wavelength 50% absorber. We show that while absorption of photons from a travelling wave is probabilistic, standing wave absorption can be observed deterministically, with nearly unitary probability of coupling a photon into a mode of the material, e.g. a localised plasmon when this is a metamaterial excited at the plasmon resonance.
