Abstract

Radio frequency superconductivity is a cornerstone technology for many future HEP particle accelerators and experiments from colliders to proton drivers for neutrino facilities to searches for dark matter. While the performance of superconducting RF (SRF) cavities has improved significantly over the last decades, and the SRF technology has enabled new applications, the proposed HEP facilities and experiments pose new challenges. To address these challenges, the field continues to generate new ideas and there seems to be a vast room for improvements. In this paper we discuss the key research directions that are aligned with and address the future HEP needs., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract

This Snowmass21 Contributed Paper encourages the Particle Physics community in fostering R&D in Superconducting Nb3Sn coated Copper RF Cavities instead of costly bulk Niobium. It describes the pressing need to devote effort in this direction, which would deliver higher gradient and higher temperature of operation and reduce the overall capital and operational costs of any future collider. It is unlikely that an ILC will be built in the next ten years with Nb as one of the main cost drivers of SRFs. This paper provides strong arguments on the benefits of using this time for R&D on producing Nb3Sn on inexpensive and thermally efficient metals such as Cu or bronze, while pursuing in parallel the novel U.S. concept of parallel-feed RF accelerator structures. A technology that synergistically uses both of these advanced tools would make an ILC or equivalent machines more affordable and more likely to be built. Such a successful enterprise would readily apply to other HEP accelerators, for instance a Muon Collider, and to accelerators beyond HEP. We present and assess current efforts in the U.S. on the novel concept of parallel-feed RF accelerator structures, and in the U.S. and abroad in producing Nb3Sn films on either Cu or bronze despite minimal funding., Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract

We propose cost-effective production of medium grain (MG) niobium (Nb) discs directly sliced from forged and annealed billet. This production method provides clean surface conditions and reliable mechanical characteristics with sub-millimeter average grain size resulting in stable SRF cavity production. We propose to apply this material to particle accelerator applications in the science and industrial frontiers. The science applications require high field gradients (>~40 MV/m) particularly in pulse mode. The industrial applications require high Q0 values with moderate gradients (~30 MV/m) in CW mode operation. This report describes the MG Nb disc production recently demonstrated and discusses future prospects for application in advanced particle accelerators in the science and industrial frontiers., Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021

4. Influence of Furnace Baking on Q-E Behavior of Superconducting Accelerating Cavities

Abstract

The performance of superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities depends on the niobium surface condition. Recently, various heat-treatment methods have been investigated to achieve unprecedented high quality factor (Q) and high accelerating field (E). We report the influence of a new baking process called furnace baking on the Q-E behavior of 1.3 GHz SRF cavities. Furnace baking is performed as the final step of the cavity surface treatment; the cavities are heated in a vacuum furnace for 3 h, followed by high-pressure rinsing and radio-frequency measurement. This method is simpler and potentially more reliable than previously reported heat-treatment methods, and it is therefore, easier to apply to the SRF cavities. We find that the quality factor is increased after furnace baking at temperatures ranging from 300C to 400C, while strong decreasing the quality factor at high accelerating field is observed after furnace baking at temperatures ranging from 600C to 800C. We find significant differences in the surface resistance for various processing temperatures., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Feedhorn- and orthomode transducer- (OMT) coupled transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers have been designed and micro-fabricated to meet the optical specifications of the LiteBIRD high frequency telescope (HFT) focal plane. We discuss the design and optical characterization of two LiteBIRD HFT detector types: dual-polarization, dual-frequency-band pixels with 195/280 GHz and 235/337 GHz band centers. Results show well-matched passbands between orthogonal polarization channels and frequency centers within 3% of the design values. The optical efficiency of each frequency channel is conservatively reported to be within the range 0.64−0.72, determined from the response to a cryogenic, temperature-controlled thermal source. These values are in good agreement with expectations and either exceed or are within 10% of the values used in the LiteBIRD sensitivity forecast. Lastly, we report a measurement of loss in Nb/SiNx/Nb microstrip at 100 mK and over the frequency range 200–350 GHz, which is comparable to values previously reported in the literature

Abstract

After many years of evaluating MgB2 films prepared with various techniques for the application to superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities, we have decided to build a system to coat full-size 1.3-GHz elliptical cavities. This paper describes the design and construction of the system. Additionally, we briefly describe experimental results with a small system and first tests with the new large system. We were able to obtain superconducting samples with a Tc of up to 38 K with the small system, but we have not been able to get any superconducting samples with the new system yet.

Abstract

The exclusive electroproduction of omega mesons, ep -> e omega p, has been studied in the kinematic range 3 pi^+pi^-pi^0. The exclusive (ep -> e omega p) cross section in the above kinematic region is 0.108 +- 0.014(stat.) +- 0.026(syst.) nb. The reaction ep -> e phi p, phi -> pi^+pi^-pi^0, has also been measured. The cross sections, as well as the cross-section ratios omega/rho and omega/phi, are presented as a function of W and Q^2. Thus, for the first time, the properties of omega electroproduction can be compared to those of rho^0, phi and J/psi electroproduction at high W., Comment: 15 pages including 4 figures

Abstract

International audience; Choosing a hybrid e+ source using channeling already meets the requirements of the ILC and CLIC. Replacing the compact converter with a granular one made of small spheres improves the heat dissipation, decreases the PEDD and provides better resistance to the shocks. Simulations of the temperature distribution of the W spheres and evaluations of the granular converter thermal shocks are ongoing. Cooling system using rotating wheel is under study. Upcoming experimental activities foreseen at KEK are very important for the hybrid targets studies in general and for the future unpolarised e+ source of the future LCs in particular.

27. Indirect measurement of field emission electron current from the main superconducting cavities of compact ERL at KEK

Abstract

The field emission electron currents from the main superconducting cavities (Cavities #3 and #4) of compact ERL at KEK, Japan, were estimated indirectly from photon dose rates measured around the cavities and on the roof of the compact ERL room. The field emission electron currents estimated from the photon dose rates measured around the cavities are in good agreement with those on the roof of the compact ERL room. The field emission electron currents increased steeply with the applied voltage. The field emission electron currents corresponding to the applied voltages were different between Cavity #3 and Cavity #4. We found that the field emission electron current exceeded 1 μA at 13.5 MV for Cavity #3 and at 15.5 MV for Cavity #4. This result was used in considering unexpected loss of field emission electrons.

Abstract

et al., Feedhorn- and orthomode transducer- (OMT) coupled transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers have been designed and micro-fabricated to meet the optical specifications of the LiteBIRD high frequency telescope (HFT) focal plane. We discuss the design and optical characterization of two LiteBIRD HFT detector types: dual-polarization, dual-frequency-band pixels with 195/280 GHz and 235/337 GHz band centers. Results show well-matched passbands between orthogonal polarization channels and frequency centers within 3% of the design values. The optical efficiency of each frequency channel is conservatively reported to be within the range 0.64−0.72, determined from the response to a cryogenic, temperature-controlled thermal source. These values are in good agreement with expectations and either exceed or are within 10% of the values used in the LiteBIRD sensitivity forecast. Lastly, we report a measurement of loss in Nb/SiNx/Nb microstrip at 100 mK and over the frequency range 200–350 GHz, which is comparable to values previously reported in the literature., This work is supported by NASA under grant no. 80NSSC18K0132.

Abstract

Le Fort I (LF1) osteotomy, a common orthognathic procedure for the maxilla aimed at achieving maxillary mobility by separating the pterygomaxillary suture, poses a risk of bad fracture that may lead to complications and inadequate mobility. Our study analyzed two- and three-dimensional computed tomography images to identify the anatomical factors associated with bad fractures due to an LF1 osteotomy. Point 'a' is where the lateral pterygomaxillary suture on the axial image aligns with the zygomatic alveolar line near the line used for an LF1 osteotomy, with the base line connecting the bilateral 'a' points.Two risk factors were identified on the pterygoid side: (i) when the distance from point 'a' to the intersection of the base line and the medial pterygoid plate was <6.0 mm; and (ii) when the distance from the piriform aperture margin to the base line was <44.78 mm. Six risk factors were identified on the maxillary side, including the distance between the most anterior and most lateral points of the internal surface of the maxillary sinus being <31.9 mm. Abstract

Odontomas, often found adjacent to impacted teeth, are tumors of abnormal tissue morphology arising from the tooth germ and are usually asymptomatic. They are often found by accident on X-ray images, and the eruption of permanent teeth is often caused by odontomas. In most cases, the tooth is extracted with the permanent tooth or orthodontic treatment is performed after extraction. However, the criteria are not clear. We encountered two cases of dental eruption in which permanent teeth, which originally seemed to be suitable for orthodontic treatment, spontaneously erupted after odontoma removal. Abstract

Background: Cisplatin (CDDP) plays a central role in chemotherapy for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), but drug resistance in HNSCC chemotherapy remains a problem, and the mechanism of CDDP resistance is unclear. We investigated CDDP-resistance mechanisms mediated by extracellular vesicles (EVs) and ATPase copper transporting beta (ATP7B) in HNSCC., Methods: We established CDDP-resistant sublines of HNSCC cells and verified their ATP7B expression. We used an EV secretion inhibitor (GW4869) and ATP7B short hairpin (sh)RNA transfection to examine the correlation between EV secretion and ATP7B expression., Results: The CDDP-resistant HNSCC sublines showed decreased CDDP sensitivity and increased ATP7B expression. GW4869 suppressed ATP7B expression, and ATP7B shRNA transfection suppressed EV secretion. The suppressions of EV secretion and ATP7B expression both enhanced CDDP's cell-killing effect., Conclusions: EVs were involved in the ATP7B-mediated mechanism underlying CDDP resistance. Abstract

Objectives: Rab11(Rab11a and Rab11b) localizes primarily along recycling endosomes in cells and is involved in various intracellular trafficking processes, including membrane receptor recycling and secretion of exosomes or small extracellular vesicles (EVs). Although Rab11 is closely associated with the progression and metastasis of various cancer types, little is known about Rab11' role in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). In this study, we investigated the roles of Rab11a and Rab11b in HNSCC., Methods: The clinical significance of Rab11 expression in HNSCC was investigated using a public database and tissue microarray analysis. Stable cell lines with loss and gain of Rab11a or Rab11b were originally established to investigate their roles in the proliferative, migratory, and invasive capabilities of HNSCC cells., Results: Database analysis revealed a significant association between Rab11b mRNA expression and a favorable patient survival rate in HNSCC. Tissue microarray analysis revealed that Rab11b expression was the highest in normal tissues and gradually decreased across the stages of HNSCC progression. Overexpression of Rab11a or Rab11b resulted in a decrease in epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), Epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) exosome secretion, and the migratory and invasive potential of HNSCC cells. The knockdown of Rab11a or Rab11b increased EpCAM/CD9 exosome secretion in addition to the migratory and invasive potential of HNSCC cells., Conclusions: Rab11 suppresses HNSCC by regulating EGFR recycling and EpCAM exosome secretion in HNSCC cells. 33. Tendon-derived matrix crosslinking techniques for electrospun multi-layered scaffolds.

Abstract

Tendon tears are common and healing often occurs incompletely and by fibrosis. Tissue engineering seeks to improve repair, and one approach under investigation uses cell-seeded scaffolds containing biomimetic factors. Retention of biomimetic factors on the scaffolds is likely critical to maximize their benefit, while minimizing the risk of adverse effects, and without losing the beneficial effects of the biomimetic factors. The aim of the current study was to evaluate cross-linking methods to enhance the retention of tendon-derived matrix (TDM) on electrospun poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) scaffolds. We tested the effects of ultraviolet (UV) or carbodiimide (EDC:NHS:COOH) crosslinking methods to better retain TDM to the scaffolds and stimulate tendon-like matrix synthesis. Initially, we tested various crosslinking configurations of carbodiimide (2.5:1:1, 5:2:1, and 10:4:1 EDC:NHS:COOH ratios) and UV (30 s 1 J/cm 2 , 60 s 1 J/cm 2 , and 60 s 4 J/cm 2 ) on PCL films compared to un-crosslinked TDM. We found that no crosslinking tested retained more TDM than coating alone (Kruskal-Wallis: p > .05), but that human adipose stem cells (hASCs) spread most on the 60 s 1 J/cm 2 UV- and 2.5:1:1 EDC-crosslinked films (Kruskal-Wallis: p < .05). Next, we compared the effects of 60 s 1 J/cm 2 UV- and 2.5:1:1 EDC-crosslinked to TDM-coated and untreated PCL scaffolds on hASC-induced tendon-like differentiation. UV-crosslinked scaffolds had greater modulus and stiffness than PCL or TDM scaffolds, and hASCs spread more on UV-crosslinked scaffolds (ANOVA: p < .05). Fourier transform infrared spectra revealed that UV- or EDC-crosslinking TDM did not affect the peaks at wavenumbers characteristic of tendon. Crosslinking TDM to electrospun scaffolds improves tendon-like matrix synthesis, providing a viable strategy for improving retention of TDM on electrospun PCL scaffolds., (© 2023 The Authors. Abstract

Background/aim: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common malignancy in the head/neck region, and cervical lymph node (CLN) metastasis is a strong poor-prognosis factor. In addition, many patients with OSCC experience recurrence despite multidisciplinary treatment. We sought to identify factors associated with CLN metastasis and recurrence in patients with OSCC., Patients and Methods: We evaluated a total of 45 patients and 233 target CLNs. The longest diameter of the target CLN, the shortest diameter of the target CLN (LS), the area of the target CLN, and the relative computed tomography (CT) values of the target CLNs calculated based on the CT values of the internal jugular vein (LCT) were obtained from preoperative CT images, and the maximum standardized uptake values of the primary tumor (pSUV) and target CLN (nSUV) were obtained from preoperative 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/CT images. We performed immunohistochemical staining for cytokeratin 13 (CK13) and 17 (CK17) on neck dissection tissues., Results: A discrimination equation was used that can predict CLN metastasis with a 92.2% discrimination rate using LS, LCT, pSUV, and nSUV. The CLNs were divided into discrimination and non-discrimination groups based on discriminant equations and CK13 and CK17 were used as the objective variables. A significantly higher recurrence rate was observed in the non-discrimination group (CK13: 5-year recurrence rate 28.6% vs. 64.3%, p<0.01; CK17: 5-year recurrence rate 28.0% vs. 76.0%, p<0.01)., Conclusion: CLN metastases in OSCC can be assessed by combining preoperative imaging. Abstract

Objectives: Cetuximab (Cmab) is a molecularly targeted monoclonal antibody drug for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC), although cetuximab resistance is a serious challenge. Epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) is an established marker for many epithelial tumors, while the soluble EpCAM extracellular domain (EpEX) functions as a ligand for epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). We investigated the expression of EpCAM in HNSC, its involvement in Cmab action, and the mechanism by which soluble EpEX activated EGFR and played key roles in Cmab resistance., Materials and Methods: We first examined EPCAM expression in HNSCs and its clinical significance by searching gene expression array databases. We then examined the effects of soluble EpEX and Cmab on intracellular signaling and Cmab efficacy in HNSC cell lines (HSC-3 and SAS)., Results: EPCAM expression was found to be enhanced in HNSC tumor tissues compared to normal tissues, and the enhancement was correlated with stage progression and prognosis. Soluble EpEX activated the EGFR-ERK signaling pathway and nuclear translocation of EpCAM intracellular domains (EpICDs) in HNSC cells. EpEX resisted the antitumor effect of Cmab in an EGFR expression-dependent manner., Conclusion: Soluble EpEX activates EGFR to increase Cmab resistance in HNSC cells. The EpEX-activated Cmab resistance in HNSC is potentially mediated by the EGFR-ERK signaling pathway and the EpCAM cleavage-induced nuclear translocation of EpICD. 37. Lip pleomorphic adenomas: case series and literature review.

Abstract

Background: Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most frequent benign salivary gland tumor, but a lip PA is rare. Although this tumor may be definitively diagnosed by imaging or a tissue biopsy if it is reasonably large, PAs on the lip are relatively small, and they present findings that are similar to those of other lip lesions, which can make a preoperative diagnosis difficult., Methods: We analyzed all PAs in the oral region and lesions on the lips treated in our department over the past 20 years, and we discuss them together with the relevant literature., Results: We found that 11.8% (n=6) of the PAs occurred on a lip (upper lip: 9.8%, lower lip: 2.0%), and ~1% of all mass lesions of the lips were PAs. The average size of the lip PAs was 1.5±0.7 cm (range, 0.7-2.2 cm). For preoperative diagnostic assistance, ultrasonography (US) (n=4), magnetic resonance (MR) (n=3), or no imaging (n=2) was used. An excisional biopsy was performed in all cases, and to date, no recurrence or malignant transformation has been observed., Conclusions: Lip PA is relatively rare. Because almost all of these lesions are small, a preoperative diagnosis is more difficult compared to palatal lesions. Abstract

Background/Aim: Cancer research has been conducted using cultured cells as part of drug discovery testing, but conventional two-dimensional culture methods are unable to reflect the complex tumor microenvironment. On the other hand, three-dimensional cultures have recently been attracting attention as in vitro models that more closely resemble the in vivo physiological environment. The purpose of this study was to establish a 3D culture method for oral cancer and to verify its practicality. Materials and Methods: Three-dimensional cultures were performed using several oral cancer cell lines. Western blotting was used for protein expression analysis of the collected cell masses (spheroids), and H-E staining was used for structural observation. The cultures were exposed to cisplatin and cetuximab and the morphological changes of spheroids over time and the expression changes of target proteins were compared. Results: Each cell line formed spheroidal cell aggregates and showed enhancement of cell adhesion molecules over time. H-E staining showed tumor tissue-like structures specific to each cell line. Cisplatin showed concentration-dependent antitumor effects due to loss of cell adhesion and spheroid disruption in each cell line, while cetuximab exhibited antitumor effects that correlated with EGFR expression in each cell line. Conclusion: Spheroids made from oral cancer cell lines appeared to have tumor-like characteristics that may reflect their clinical significance. Abstract

The Hybrid Ring with a superconducting-linac injector as a highly flexible synchrotron radiation source to enable new experimental techniques and enhance many existing ones is proposed. It is designed to be operated with the coexistence of the storage (SR) bunches characterized by the performance of the storage ring, and the single-pass (SP) bunches characterized by the performance of the superconducting linac. Unique experiments can be performed by simultaneous use of the SR and SP beams, in addition to research with various experimental techniques utilizing the versatile SR beam and research in the field of ultrafast dynamics utilizing the ultrashort pulse of the SP beam. The extendability of the Hybrid Ring will allow it to be developed into a synchrotron radiation complex., (open access.)

40. Comparative Study on Epstein-Barr Virus-Positive Mucocutaneous Ulcer and Methotrexate-Associated Lymphoproliferative Disorders Developed in the Oral Mucosa: A Case Series of 10 Patients and Literature Review.

Abstract

Methotrexate-associated lymphoproliferative disorder (MTX-LPD) is an iatrogenic immunodeficiency-associated lymphoproliferative disorder that occurs mainly with MTX use. This disorder has been associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. In 2017, the WHO newly defined the disease concept of EBV-positive mucocutaneous ulcer (EBV-MCU) as a good-prognosis EBV-related disease. Here, we report 10 cases of MTX-LPD or EBV-MCU in the oral mucosa. This retrospective, observational study was conducted with MTX-LPD or EBV-MCU in the oral mucosa patients who visited us during the nine year period from 2012 to 2021. We gathered the basic information, underlying disease, histopathological evaluation, treatment and prognosis for the subjects. All were being treated with MTX for rheumatoid arthritis. EBV infection was positive in all cases by immunohistochemistry. A complete or partial response was obtained in all cases with the withdrawal of MTX. Our results suggests that the most common risk factor for developing EBV-MCU is the use of immunosuppressive drugs. The most common site of onset is the oral mucosa, which may be attributed to the mode of EBV infection and the high incidence of chronic irritation of the oral mucosa. A small number of patients had been diagnosed with MTX-LPD, but we consider that these cases were EBV-MCU based on our study.

41. Low-Temperature Properties of the Magnetic Sensor with Amorphous Wire.

Abstract

We found that a magnetic sensor made of a coil wound around a 5 f0.1 mm (Fe 0.06 Co 0.94 ) 72.5 Si 2.5 B 15 (FeCoSiB) amorphous wire could operate in a wide temperature range from room temperature to liquid helium temperature (4.2 K). The low-temperature sensing element of the sensor was connected to the room-temperature driving circuit by only one coaxial cable with a diameter of 1 mm. The one-cable design of the magnetic sensor reduced the heat transferring through the cable to the liquid helium. To develop a magnetic sensing system capable of operating at liquid helium temperature, we evaluated the low-temperature properties of the FeCoSiB magnetic sensor.

42. Bi-functional nanoparticle-stabilized hydrogel colloidosomes as both extracellular matrix and bioactive factor delivery vehicle.

Abstract

Maintaining both cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions is often a critical component of three-dimensional (3D) tissue regeneration. In high-density cell condensation systems, lack of appropriate cell-ECM interactions can result in limited and/or slow cell differentiation and tissue formation. To address these problems, a colloidosome microsphere system that is composed of a gelatin hydrogel core and a porous nanoparticle shell is developed. The colloidosome microsphere functions as an ECM and morphogen carrier for the induction of cartilage formation of high-density human mesenchymal stem cell (hMSC) in 3D cultures. With the protection of the nanoparticle shell, the colloidosome microspheres can be readily suspended in aqueous solution without clumping, thus incorporated homogeneously within high-density cell condensations. The gelatin-based colloidosome microspheres stimulate chondrogenesis of hMSCs and degrade rapidly to facilitate ECM remodeling for new tissue formation. When loaded with human transforming growth factor-β1, a potent chondrogenic morphogen, the colloidosomes serve as a bioactive factor delivery vehicle as well. The dual functionality of the colloidosomes as an ECM and a growth factor carrier effectively supports the chondrogenic differentiation of high-density hMSC condensations. These capabilities render the colloidosomes a promising platform system amenable to large-scale production of high-density 3D tissue culture constructs.
