In contrast to the ?avian-like? diploid number (2n = 80), most toucans and aracaris (Piciformes: Ramphastidae) have divergent karyotypes, exhibiting a higher 2n. To identify the chromosomal rearrangements that shaped the karyotype of these species, we applied chicken macrochromosome paints 1?10 and 11 microsatellite sequences to the chromosomes of two representative species, Pteroglossus inscriptus and Ramphastos tucannus tucannus. Paints of chicken chromosomes revealed that at least the first five ancestral chromosomes have undergone fissions, and a fusion between a segment of chicken chromosome 1 and a segment from chromosome 3 occurred in both species. The microsatellite sequences were accumulated mainly in the Z chromosome and in several microchromosomes in both species. These results suggest that the genomes of the Ramphastidae have been shaped by extensive fissions and repetitive DNA accumulation as the main driving forces leading to the higher 2n as found in these species. Furthermore, our results suggest that the putative ancestral karyotype of Ramphastidae already had a high diploid number, probably close to 2n = 112, similar to that observed in P. inscriptus and R. t. tucannus.

Resumo O estudo de caracteres morfológicos e suas funções biomecânicas na estrutura craniana das aves levanta debates de cunho filogenético, taxonômico e morfofuncional. O objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever e analisar caracteres morfológicos e morfométricos do esqueleto do Ramphastos toco e confrontá-los com a bibliografia disponível. Foram analisados 13 crânios de indivíduos adultos e de um espécime dissecado fixado em formol (4%). As carcaças foram submetidas à técnica de maceração para o preparo dos esqueletos, com a retirada dos tecidos moles, desengorduramento e clareamento em água oxigenada (50%) e hipoclorito de sódio (50%). O formato e amplitude da sutura naso-frontal e zona flexora craniofacial, a presença dos sesamóides intracapsulares rostral e caudal na articulação quadrática e a presença do ligamento pós-orbital foram fatores que desafiaram a bibliografia existente e os modelos de transferência de força propostos durante estudos da cinética craniana da espécie. A discussão que emerge é a possibilidade dessas características limitadoras da cinética craniana descritas nos espécimes possuírem, em conjunto, a função de promover estabilidade funcional para uma estrutura cuja natureza dimensional, em si, gera instabilidade. Os resultados morfométricos também apresentaram divergências significativas quando comparados à bibliografia disponível, o que pode estar relacionado a variáveis como especiação alopátrica, hibridização e amostragem. Abstract The study of morphological traits and their biomechanical roles in the cranial structure of birds raises phylogenetic, taxonomic and morphofunctional debates. The aim of this study was to describe and analyze morphological and morphometric data of the skull of Ramphastos toco and to compare the results with the available bibliography. Thirteen adult skulls and one folmaldehyde-fixed dissected specimen were analyzed. For skeletal preparation, the carcasses were submitted to maceration with the removal of soft tissues, degreasing and bleaching in hydrogen peroxide (50%) and sodium hypochlorite (50%). The shape and size of the naso-frontal suture, the presence of the rostral and caudal intracapsular sesamoids in the quadratic joint and the presence of the orbital ligament were altogether elements that challenged the available data. It also challenges the strength transferring models proposed in kinetic studies for the species. The discussion that emerges is the possibility of these limiting characteristics of the cranial kinetics described on the specimens have, together, a single role promoting functional stability to a structure that has a dimensional nature that generates instability. The morphometric results also presented significant divergences when compared to the available bibliography, which may be related to variables such as allopatric speciation, hybridization and sampling.

В статті зазначені основні проблеми, пов’язані з технологіями збирання бобових культур (сої, гороху) та ріпаку. Зроблено аналіз конструкцій спеціальних жаток типу Flex та приставок до жаток зернозбиральних комбайнів для збирання ріпаку компаній John Deere, Massey Ferguson, CLAAS, New Holland. Розкрито конструктивні та технологічні рішення жаток Flex, які дозволяють збирати такі культури, як соя, горох на мінімально-можливій висоті зрізу та спеціальних жаток і приставок для збирання ріпаку з мінімальними втратами. Розглянуті особливості гнучких платформ та гнучких різальних апаратів до спеціальних жаток зернозбиральних комбайнів. На основі приведеного аналізу конструкцій спеціальних жаток і приставок розглянуто можливість їх адаптації до роботи з зернозбиральними комбайнами CLAAS TUCANO, LEXION. Проведений аналіз конструкцій жаток John Deere 630F, 635F HidroFlex і приставок ПЗР з зернозбиральними комбайнами CLAAS TUCANO, LEXION свідчить про те, що під час використання їх у виробничих умовах будуть отримані позитивні результати, висока якість та надійність роботи, The issues devoted to soybean and rape harvesting technologies are highlighted in the study. The analysis of specific reapers such as Flex and rape combine harvester add-on devices produced by John Deere; CLAAS; New Holland companies is given in the study. The constructive and technological characteristics of Flex reapers; which make it possible to collect soybeans; peas at the lowest cutting height and combine harvester add-on devices with minimal loss were examined in the article. The features of flexible platforms and flexible cutting machines to special reapers of combine harvesters were considered in the study. The analysis of reaper and add-on combine harvester device constructions showed that it is possible to adopt them to CLAAS TUCANO; LEXION combine harvesters. The analysis of John Deere 630F; 635F HidroFlex reaper constructions and PZR add-on devices in combination with CLAAS TUCANO; LEXION combine harvesters shows positive results; high quality and availability.

The key issues that are associated with the technologies of soybean harvesting are highlighted in the article. The analysis of specific structures such as Flex headers for John Deere, CLAAS, New Holland combine harvesters is given. The constructive and technological solutions of Flex headers, which make it possible to collect crops such as soybeans, peas to minimum possible cutting height are described. The features of floating platforms and at the same time cutting machines to special harvester combines. The given analysis of special headers’ structure considered the possibility of adapting them to work with CLAAS TUCANO, LEXION harvesters. Um tucano chegou ao Centro de Conservação da Fauna Silvestre de Ilha Solteira (CCFS) levado pela polícia ambiental em julho de 2014. No exame físico observaram-se as seguintes alterações na pata esquerda: atrofia na musculatura do tarso-metatarso, todos os dedos voltados cranialmente, ausência de sensibilidade superficial e profunda nos dedos, dificuldade em se locomover e alteração de aprumo. Primeiramente, fez-se o tratamento com anti-inflamatórios e antibiótico e uma semana após, optou-se pela realização da acupuntura, iniciadas em agosto de 2014. As sessões são realizadas semanalmente e houve uma grande melhora no posicionamento e sensibilidade dos dedos. As sessões continuam sendo feitas (agosto de 2015) para observar se mais melhoras podem ser conquistadas.

Um destes mecanismos consiste na modulação da temperatura superficial de áreas específicas do corpo via ajustes vasomotores para promover conservação ou dissipação do calor corpóreo. Este ajuste termorregulatório é fundamental para manutenção da temperatura corpórea ao longo de uma faixa de temperatura moderada, denominada Zona de Neutralidade Térmica (ZNT), sem aumento da taxa metabólica (TM). As janelas térmicas, regiões do corpo pouco isoladas e altamente vascularizadas, são muito eficientes na dissipação de calor corpóreo através desse mecanismo. O bico do tucano-toco (Ramphastos toco) foi descrito como uma janela térmica altamente eficiente, atuando de forma muito relevante na homeostase térmica dessa ave. Por isso, é possível que os ajustes na troca de calor através do bico desempenhem um papel central na delimitação da ZNT desta ave. Portanto, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi determinar a contribuição das trocas de calor através do bico de R. toco nos limites superior e inferior da ZNT. Para tal, medimos a taxa metabólica dos tucanos ao longo de uma faixa de temperatura ambiente de 0 a 35°C (a cada 5°C). As medições de TM foram feitas com o bico em sua condição intacta (grupo controle) e, posteriormente, com o bico isolado artificialmente (grupo experimental). O limites da ZNT, 9,5 - 25,0°C para o grupo controle e 10,8 - 23,3°C para o grupo experimental, não diferiram entre os tratamentos. A TM diferiu entre os tratamentos somente sob temperaturas elevadas (30 a 35°C), atingindo valores de 0,97 mlO2.g-1.h-1 (±0,06) para o grupo controle e 1,20 mlO2.g-1.h-1 (±0,07) para o grupo experimental a 35°C. (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) Body temperature regulation in endotherms involves adjustments in heat exchange rates between the animal and the environment. One of those mechanisms include the modulation of the surface temperature of specific areas of the body through vasomotor adjustment promoting dissipation or conservation of body heat. This thermoregulatory adjustment is essential for maintenance of body temperature over a moderate temperature range, known as thermal neutral zone (TNZ), without increasing the metabolic rate (MR). Thermal windows are body regions poorly insulated and highly vascularized that are particularly efficient for heat dissipation through that mechanism. The beak of the toco-toucan (Ramphastos toco) was described as a highly efficient thermal window, assisting the thermal homeostasis of this bird. Therefore, is possible that the heat exchange adjustments through the beak have an important role on delimitation of TNZ. Hence, our goal in this study was to determinate the contribution of heat exchanges through de beak of R. toco on the amplitude and limits (lower and upper) of TNZ. For that, we measured metabolic rate, through oxygen consumption, over a range of ambient temperature from 0 to 35°C (every 5°C). MR measurements were made in birds with the beak intact (control group) and subsequently with the beak artificially insulated (experimental group). The limits of TNZ, 9.5-25.0°C for the control group and 10.8-23.3°C for the experimental group, did not differ between the treatments. MR differed among treatments only at elevated temperatures (30 and 35°C), reaching values of 0.97 mlO2.g -1.h-1 (± 0.06) for the control group and 1.20 mlO2.g -1.h-1 (± 0.07) for the experimental group at 35°C.
