We study analytic solutions to the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) gap equation for isotropic superconductors with finite-range interaction potentials over the full range of temperatures from absolute zero to the superconducting critical temperature, $0\leq T\leq T_c$. Using these solutions, $\Delta(\epsilon,T)$, we provide a proof of the universality of the temperature dependence of the BCS gap ratio at the Fermi level, $\Delta(\epsilon=0,T)/T_c$. Moreover, by examining the behavior of this ratio as a function of energy, $\epsilon$, we find that non-universal features emerge away from the Fermi level, and these features take the form of a temperature independent multiplicative factor, $F(\epsilon)$, which is equal to $\Delta(\epsilon,T)/\Delta(\epsilon=0,T)$ up to exponentially small corrections, i.e., the error terms vanish like $\rm{e}^{-1/\lambda}$ in the weak-coupling limit $\lambda\rightarrow 0$. We discuss the model-dependent features of both $F(\epsilon)$ and $T_c$, and we illustrate their behavior focusing on several concrete examples of physically-relevant finite-range potentials. Comparing these cases for fixed coupling constants, we highlight the importance of the functional form of the interaction potential in determining the size of the critical temperature and provide guidelines for choosing potentials which lead to higher values of $T_c$. We introduce the concept of Floquet odd-frequency superconducting pairs and establish their emergence in time-periodic conventional superconductors, where the continuous time-translation invariance is broken. We show that these exotic Cooper pairs are possible because the Floquet modes in time-periodic systems provide an additional index (a Floquet index) that broadens the classification of pair symmetries, with no analog in the static regime. Our results thus put forward a different route for odd-frequency superconducting pairs and pave the way for Floquet engineered dynamical superconducting states., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures + 5 pages supplemental material. In this work we develop EPOCH: Equilibrium Propagator by Orthogonal polynomial CHain, a computationally efficient method to calculate the time-dependent equilibrium Green's functions, including the anomalous Green's functions of superconductors, to capture the time-evolution in large inhomogeneous systems. The EPOCH method generalizes the Chebyshev wave-packet propagation method from quantum chemistry and efficiently incorporates the Fermi-Dirac statistics that is needed for equilibrium quantum condensed matter systems. The computational cost of EPOCH scales only linearly in the system degrees of freedom, generating an extremely efficient algorithm also for very large systems. We demonstrate the power of the EPOCH method by calculating the time-evolution of an excitation near a superconductor-normal metal interface in two and three dimensions, capturing transmission as well as normal and Andreev reflections., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures. We investigate the induced superconducting pair correlations in junctions between a conventional spin-singlet $s$-wave superconductor and a disordered normal metal. Decomposing the pair amplitude based on its symmetries in the time domain, we demonstrate that the odd-time, or equivalently odd-frequency, spin-singlet $p$-wave correlations are both significant in size and entirely robust against random non-magnetic disorder. We find that these odd-frequency correlations can even be generated by disorder. In this article we review recent work on van der Waals (vdW) systems in which at least one of the components has strong spin-orbit coupling. We focus on a selection of vdW heterostructures to exemplify the type of interesting electronic properties that can arise in these systems. We first present a general effective model to describe the low energy electronic degrees of freedom in these systems. We apply the model to study the case of (vdW) systems formed by a graphene sheet and a topological insulator. We discuss the electronic transport properties of such systems and show how they exhibit much stronger spin-dependent transport effects than isolated topological insulators. We then consider vdW systems in which the layer with strong spin-orbit coupling is a monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) and briefly discuss graphene-TMD systems. In the second part of the article we discuss the case in which the vdW system includes a superconducting layer in addition to the layer with strong spin-orbit coupling. We show in detail how these systems can be designed to realize odd-frequency superconducting pair correlations. Finally, we discuss twisted graphene-NbSe2 bilayer systems as an example in which the strength of the proximity-induced superconducting pairing in the normal layer, and its Ising character, can be tuned via the relative twist angle between the two layers forming the heterostructure., Comment: Brief invited review for special issue of Annalen der Physik. 20 pages, 11 figures. Odd-frequency superconductivity represents a truly unconventional ordered state which, in contrast to conventional superconductivity, exhibits pair correlations which are odd in relative time and, hence, inherently dynamical. In this review article we provide an overview of recent advances in the study of odd-frequency superconducting correlations in one-dimensional systems. In particular, we focus on recent developments in the study of nanowires with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and metallic edges of two-dimensional topological insulators in proximity to conventional superconductors. These systems have recently elicited a great deal of interest due to their potential for realizing one-dimensional topological superconductivity whose edges can host Majorana zero modes. We also provide a detailed discussion of the intimate relationship between Majorana zero modes and odd-frequency pairing. Throughout this review, we highlight the ways in which odd-frequency pairing provides a deeper understanding of the unconventional superconducting correlations present in each of these intriguing systems and how the study and control of these states holds the potential for future applications., Comment: Invited topical review, 32 pages, 13 figures. In this article we review recent progress in the understanding of multiband superconductivity and its relationship to odd-frequency pairing. We begin our discussion by reviewing the emergence of odd-frequency pairing in a simple two-band model, providing a brief pedagogical overview of the formalism. We then examine several examples of multiband superconducting systems in each case describing, both, the origin of the band degree of freedom and the nature of the odd-frequency pairing. Throughout, we attempt to convey a unified picture of how odd-frequency pairing emerges in these materials and propose that similar mechanisms are responsible for odd-frequency pairing in several analogous systems: layered two-dimensional heterostructures, double quantum dots, double nanowires, Josephson junctions, and systems described by isolated valleys in momentum space. We also review experimental probes of odd-frequency pairing in multiband systems, focusing on hybridization gaps in the electronic density of states, paramagnetic Meissner effect, and Kerr effect., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures

A growing body of literature suggests that odd-frequency superconducting pair amplitudes can be generated in normal metal-superconductor junctions. The emergence of odd-frequency pairing in these systems is often attributed to the breaking of translation invariance. In this work, we study the pair symmetry of a one-dimensional $s$-wave superconductor in the presence of a single non-magnetic impurity and demonstrate that translation symmetry breaking is not sufficient for inducing odd-frequency pairing. We consider three kinds of impurities: a local perturbation of the chemical potential, an impurity possessing a quantum energy level, and a local perturbation of the superconducting gap. Surprisingly, we find local perturbations of the chemical potential do not induce any odd-frequency pairing, despite the fact that they break translation invariance. Moreover, although odd-frequency can be induced by both the quantum impurity and the perturbation of the gap, we find these odd-frequency amplitudes emerge from entirely different kinds of scattering processes. The quantum impurity generates odd-frequency pairs by allowing one of the quasiparticles belonging to an equal-time Cooper pair to tunnel onto the impurity state and then back to the superconductor, giving rise to odd-frequency amplitudes with a temporal broadening inversely proportional to the energy level of the impurity. In contrast to this, the perturbation of the gap leads to odd-frequency pairing by "gluing-together" normal state quasiparticles from different points in space and time, leading to odd-frequency amplitudes which are very localized in the time domain., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure

Based on recent progress in mathematical physics, we present a reliable method to analytically solve the linearized BCS gap equation for a large class of finite-range interaction potentials leading to s-wave superconductivity. With this analysis, we demonstrate that the monotonic growth of the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ with the carrier density, $n$, predicted by standard BCS theory, is an artifact of the simplifying assumption that the interaction is quasi-local. In contrast, we show that any well-defined non-local potential leads to a "superconducting dome", i.e. a non-monotonic $T_c(n)$ exhibiting a maximum value at finite doping and going to zero for large $n$. This proves that, contrary to conventional wisdom, the presence of a superconducting dome is not necessarily an indication of competing orders, nor of exotic superconductivity. We study the behavior of Cooper pair amplitudes that emerge when a two-dimensional superconductor is coupled to two parallel nanowires, focusing on the conditions for realizing odd-frequency pair amplitudes in the absence of spin-orbit coupling or magnetism. In general, any finite tunneling between the superconductor and the two nanowires induces odd-frequency spin-singlet pair amplitudes in the substrate as well as a substantial odd-frequency interwire pairing, both of which vanish locally. Interestingly, in the regime of strong superconductor-nanowire tunneling, we find that the presence of two nanowires allows for the conversion of non-local odd-frequency pairing to local even-frequency pairing. By studying this higher-order symmetry conversion process, we are able to identify a notable effect of the odd-frequency pairing in the superconductor on local quantities accessible by experiments. Specifically, we find that the odd-frequency pairing plays a direct role in the emergence of certain subgap features in the local density of states, and, importantly, it is responsible for a reduction of the maximum Josephson current between the two nanowires, measurable using Josephson scanning tunneling microscopy. We discuss ways to control the sizes of these effects induced by odd-frequency superconductivity by tuning the parameters describing the nanowires., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures

Using a simple theoretical model, we demonstrate the emergence of odd-frequency pair amplitudes in conventional Josephson junctions both in the absence of a voltage (DC effect) and in the presence of a finite voltage (AC effect). In both cases, we find that odd-frequency interlead pairing emerges whenever a Josephson current is expected to flow. Additionally, we show that the interlead spin-susceptibility is directly influenced by the presence of the odd-frequency pair amplitudes. Specifically, we find that the spin-susceptibility is suppressed when the odd-frequency component is the largest. By establishing a novel link between the physics of Josephson junctions and odd-frequency pairing, this work demonstrates the importance of odd-frequency pairing for understanding conventional superconducting systems., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

We study the emergence of odd-frequency superconducting pairing in UPt$_3$. Starting from a tight-binding model accounting for the nonsymmorphic crystal symmetry of UPt$_3$ and assuming an order parameter in the $E_{2u}$ representation, we demonstrate that odd-frequency pairing arises very generally, as soon as inter-sublattice hopping or spin-orbit coupling is present. We also show that in the low temperature superconducting $B$ phase, the presence of a chiral order parameter together with spin-orbit coupling, leads to additional odd-frequency pair amplitudes not present in the $A$ or $C$ phases. Furthermore, we show that a finite Kerr rotation in the $B$ phase is only present if odd-$\omega$ pairing also exists., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

It was recently shown that odd-frequency superconducting pair amplitudes can be induced in conventional superconductors subjected to a spatially-nonuniform time-dependent drive. It has also been shown that, in the presence of interband scattering, multiband superconductors will possess bulk odd-frequency superconducting pair amplitudes. In this work we build on these previous results to demonstrate that by subjecting a multiband superconductor with interband scattering to a time-dependent drive even-frequency pair amplitudes can be converted to odd-frequency pair amplitudes and vice versa. Recent pump-probe experiments demonstrate the possibility that Dirac materials may be driven into transient excited states describable by two chemical potentials, one for the electrons and one for the holes. Given the Dirac nature of the spectrum, such an inverted population allows the optical tunability of the density of states of the electrons and holes, effectively offering control of the strength of the Coulomb interaction. Here we discuss the feasibility of realizing transient excitonic instabilities in optically-pumped Dirac materials. We demonstrate, theoretically, the reduction of the critical coupling leading to the formation of a transient condensate of electron-hole pairs and identify signatures of this state. Furthermore, we provide guidelines for experiments by both identifying the regimes in which such exotic many-body states are more likely to be observed and estimating the magnitude of the excitonic gap for a few important examples of existing Dirac materials. We find a set of material parameters for which our theory predicts large gaps and high critical temperatures and which could be realized in future Dirac materials. We also comment on transient excitonic instabilities in three-dimensional Dirac and Weyl semimetals. We show that Berezinskii's classification of the symmetries of Cooper pair amplitudes holds for driven systems even in the absence of translation invariance. We then consider a model Hamiltonian for a superconductor coupled to an external driving potential and, treating the driving potential as a perturbation, we investigate the corrections to the anomalous Green's function, density of states, and spectral function. We find that in the presence of an external drive the anomalous Green's function develops terms that are odd in frequency and that the same mechanism responsible for these odd-frequency terms generates additional features in the density of states and spectral function., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

We obtain the general conditions for the emergence of odd-frequency superconducting pairing in a two-dimensional (2D) electronic system proximity-coupled to a superconductor, making minimal assumptions about both the 2D system and the superconductor. Using our general results we show that a simple heterostructure formed by a monolayer of a group VI transition metal dichalcogenide, such as molybdenum disulfide, and an s-wave superconductor with Rashba spin-orbit coupling will exhibit odd-frequency superconducting pairing. Furthermore, we show that in such a heterostructure the odd-frequency pairing amplitude will be proportional to the product of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling in the substrate and the spin-orbit coupling in the dichalcogenide layer., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, published version

Some Kondo insulators are expected to possess topologically protected surface states with linear Dirac spectrum, the topological Kondo insulators. Because the bulk states of these systems typically have heavy effective electron masses, the surface states may exhibit extraordinarily small Fermi velocities that could force the effective fine structure constant of the surface states into the strong coupling regime. Using a tight-binding model we study the many-body instabilities of these systems and identify regions of parameter space in which the system exhibits spin density wave, and charge density wave order., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures
