M. catarrhalis in the oropharynx of children is also a predisposing factor for otitis media. As a result, determining the oropharyngeal carriage rate of these commensal species and associated factors among healthy schoolchildren is substantial.Materials and Methods: This community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Gondar, Northwest Ethiopia, from January to April 2019. A multi-stage and simple random sampling technique were used to select schools and participants, respectively. A total of 524 oropharyngeal swabs were collected using cotton swabs. Modified Thayer-Martin media was used for primary bacterial isolation, and battery of biochemical tests was performed to identify species. For frequencies, descriptive statistics were computed and the logistic regression model was used to see the relationship between dependent and independent variables.Results: A total of 524 healthy schoolchildren with a mean age of 12.2 ± 2.74 years participated in this study. The overall oropharyngeal carriage rate was 21.8% (114/524). Of these, N. meningitidis, N. lactamica, N. sicca, and M. catarrhalis were identified in 53 (46.5%), 14 (12.3%), 11 (9.6%), and 36 (31.6%) children, respectively. The culture positivity rate was higher at a younger age, which was 8.1%, 11.3%, and 14.9% in ages between 15– 18, 11– 14, and 7– 10, respectively. The oropharyngeal carriage was significantly associated with the number of students per class (> 40).Conclusion: There is a higher proportion of carriers of commensal N. lactamica and M. catarrhalis in Gondar town schoolchildren. The oropharyngeal carriage rate was associated with a crowded classroom. The characterization of non-pathogenic Neisseria species and M. catarrhalis in the study area can support the diagnosis of patients suspected of having N. meningitis infections.Keywords: N. lactamica, N. sicca, Moraxella catarrhalis, schoolchildren, Gondar

However, COVID-19 vaccine hesitance was one of the barriers to delivering the vaccine, and this issue was not well addressed in Ethiopia. Therefore, we aimed to determine the prevalence of COVID-19 vaccination acceptability and the factors that influence it among pregnant women in Northeast Ethiopia.Methods: A mixed-methods approach comprising both qualitative interviews and a quantitative survey was conducted from January 1– 30, 2022. For the quantitative part, a multi-stage sampling technique was used to recruit the study participants (n=702). Data was collected through face-to-face interviews using pretested and structured questionnaires. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were employed. The statistical difference was considered at P-0.05, and the strength of association was assessed by the odds ratio and respective 95% confidence intervals. For the qualitative part, 18 participants were selected purposively for in-depth interviews, an interviewer guide was used for data collection and thematic content analysis was performed.Results: In this study, a total of 702 pregnant women were included with the response rate of 100%. The rate of COVID-19 vaccine acceptance was 22.6% (95% CI: 19.6%, 25.9%). The husbands’ educational level (AOR = 1.99, 95% CI: 1.09, 3.64), chronic medical illness (AOR = 2.41, 95% CI: 1.28, 4.54), positive attitude (AOR = 1.59, 95% CI: 1.09, 2.31), and good practice of COVID-19 preventive measures (AOR = 1.59, 95% CI: 1.09, 2.31) were determinant factors of COVID-19 vaccine acceptance. According to the qualitative findings, the most common reasons for COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy were fear of fetal side effects, misconceptions about the vaccine, and religious beliefs.Conclusion: In this study, the acceptability of the COVID-19 vaccine was low. Therefore, health professionals should disseminate accurate vaccination information and address misinformation to boost vaccine acceptance among pregnant women.Keywords: COVID-19 vaccine, a mixed method, pregnant women, Northeast Ethiopia

Septicemia, meningitis, pneumonia, arthritis, osteomyelitis, and urinary tract infections are all examples of systemic illnesses that can affect newborns. Hence, the main aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and factors associated with neonatal sepsis among newborns in Woldia and Dessie Comprehensive Specialized Hospitals, northeast Ethiopia, from January 1 to July 30, 2021.Methods: This institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted from January 1 to July 30, 2021, on 344 randomly selected neonates who visited the hospital. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select samples, and data were collected using a pre-tested standardized questionnaire. For data entry and analysis, Epi Data version 4.1 and SPSS version 24 applications were used, respectively. The goodness-of-fit was tested by the Hosmer–Lemeshow statistic test. Bivariable and multivariable binary logistic regressions were used to identify associated factors at a 95% confidence interval. Significance was considered at p-value < 0.05.Results: In this study, the prevalence of neonatal sepsis was 79.4% (95% CI: 75.2– 83.6%). Maternal UTI/STI history [AOR: 3.1; 95% CI (1.5– 7.1)], gestational age < 37 weeks [AOR: 4.4; 95% CI (1.0– 8.9)], PROM [AOR: 4.9; 95% CI (2.5– 6.8)], and new-born resuscitation history [AOR: 2.3; 95% CI (1.5– 4.3)] were all significantly associated with neonatal sepsis.Conclusion: This study indicates that the proportion of neonatal sepsis is high. A history of maternal PROM, being a preterm neonate, a history of maternal UTI/STIs, and having received resuscitation at birth were identified as risk factors for neonatal sepsis.Keywords: neonatal sepsis, neonatal infection, neonatal intensive care unit, hospitals, north east, Ethiopia

The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of Necrotizing Enterocolitis and its associated factors among preterm neonates admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Units in Gurage Zone hospitals.Methods: Institution-based cross-sectional study design was employed. The simple Random Sampling Technique was applied to collect the data using a structured questionnaire. Data were cleaned, checked for inconsistencies, coded and entered via EPI data 3.1, and exported to Stata version 14 for further analysis. The data were processed by Stata 14 to estimate the prevalence of necrotizing enterocolitis.Results: The prevalence of Necrotizing Enterocolitis among neonates was 28 (9.7%) 95% CI of 6. 8– 13.7%. Birth weight (AOR: 7.33 95% CI (2.04: 26.38)), presence of maternal infection (AOR: 6.09, 95% CI (1.31:28.26)), length of hospital stay (AOR: 3.28, 95% CI (1.20, 8.96)), and initiating trophic feeding (AOR: 5.89, 95% CI (2.27: 15.33)) were associated with neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis.Conclusion: The prevalence of Necrotizing Enterocolitis among preterm neonates was significant and special attention is needed for premature neonates with low birth weight and born from mothers with infection during pregnancy. Minimizing the length of hospital stay will be very useful to prevent the occurrence of Necrotizing Enterocolitis.Keywords: necrotizing enter colitis, low birth weight, trophic feeding

Background: Effective nursing management and leadership are essential for the provision of desired patient care that will contribute to the improvement of any country's health indicators. However, nurses' views and experiences on the multitude of personal and organizational factors which may impact their decision-making abilities are often neglected in the literature. The study aimed to assess magnitude of poor decision making and its associated factors among nurse managers in South Wollo Zone Governmental Hospitals, Amhara Regional State, Ethiopia, 2023., Methods: Non experimental cross-sectional study was conducted among 168 nurse managers in South Wollo Zone Public Hospitals from April 01 2023 to May 15/2023. Participants were selected by using a simple random sampling technique. The data were collected by using structured questionnaire from the study participants. Data were entered using EPI data version 4.6 and exported to SPSS version 26 for analysis. The bi-variable logistic regression analysis model was used to identify the potential predictor variable, with p -value <0.25 was fitted into the multivariable logistic regression analysis model; p -value less than 0.05 and an adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to declare, factors associated with the outcome variable. The model fitness was checked by using the Hosmer and Lemeshow test. Data were presented with frequency tables, graphs, and pie charts., Results: The study found that the overall magnitude of poor decision-making among nurse managers was 35.7%. Being self-confident [AOR = 0.01, 95% CI: (00.002, 0.05)], receiving feedback [AOR = 0.24, 95% CI: 0.08, 0.76], and getting managerial support [AOR = 0.22, 95% CI: (0.06, 0.81)] were negatively associated with poor decision-making among nurse managers., Conclusion: Self-confidence, receiving feedback, and getting managerial support were variables significantly associated with poor decision-making. Introduction: Depressive disorder is a common mental health issue among perinatal mothers living with HIV, potentially leading to significant despair and anxiety. This condition can hinder maternal-infant bonding and undermine efforts to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV. Despite its importance, little is known about the factors associated with depression in this population., Main Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and risk factors of perinatal depression among women living with HIV in the Amhara region, Northwest Ethiopia, in 2022., Methods: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 399 HIV-positive pregnant and postpartum women, both with follow-up and newly diagnosed cases, who attended PMTCT services in the East Gojjam Zone Public Hospitals from May 28 to July 12, 2022. Participants were selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected through direct interviews and document reviews. The Edinburgh Perinatal Depression Scale was used to assess perinatal depression which demonstrated high internal reliability (Cronbach's alpha of 0.93). Data were cleaned and analyzed using Epi-data version 3.1 and SPSS version 25. Binary logistic regression models were used to identify variables associated with perinatal depression, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05., Results: Out of 399 eligible women, 394 participated, yielding a response rate of 98.7 %. The prevalence of perinatal depression among these women was 34.3 % (95 % CI: 29.6-39.4). Factors significantly associated with perinatal depression included intimate partner violence (AOR = 4.24, 95 % CI: 2.507-7.168), internalized stigma (AOR = 4.93, 95 % CI: 2.912-9.560), poor social support (AOR = 4.0, 95 % CI: 1.693-9.560), and poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy (AOR = 3.65, 95 % CI: 1.774-7.519)., Conclusion: Approximately one-third of perinatal women living with HIV experienced depression. Key factors contributing to this included intimate partner violence, internalized stigma, low social support, and poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy. Background and Aims: Stillbirth is a public health as well as a development problem in low and middle-income countries. The studies that found out maternal age as a factor for the risk of stillbirth reported different findings. This systematic review and meta-analysis is believed to fill the inconclusiveness of these findings. Hence, the aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to estimate the pooled effect of advanced maternal age on stillbirth in Africa., Methods: PubMed & HINARY databases and Google Scholar search engine were searched to access the primary studies. The extracted data using Microsoft excel was exported to Stata 15 software for analysis. The presence of heterogeneity was checked using Cochran's Q statistic and the I 2 test. Publication bias was examined by using funnel plot and Egger's test. The pooled effect measure with DerSimonian and Laird method of random-effect model was reported using odds ratio (OR) with respective 95% confidence interval., Results: Totally, 14 articles are included for the systematic review and meta-analysis. The stillbirth reported by the studies ranges from 15 to 146.7 per 1000 births. The overall OR of advanced maternal age (≥35 years) on stillbirth is 1.42 (1.18, 1.71) when compared with the age group of 20-35 years. The cumulative effect of getting pregnant at advanced age on stillbirth was slightly increasing from year to year., Conclusion: Advanced maternal age is a risk factor for stillbirth. Background: Bedaquiline (BDQ) is an effective drug currently used for multidrug-resistant or rifampicin-resistant TB (MDR/RR-TB) and pre-extensively drug-resistant TB (pre-XDR-TB) treatment. However, resistance to this new drug is emerging. We discussed the characteristics of the first patient in Ethiopia who acquired BDQ and fluoroquinolones (FQs) resistance during treatment follow-up., Case Report: In this case report, we present the case of a 28-year-old male pulmonary TB patient diagnosed with MDR-TB who is a resident of the Oromia Region of North Shewa, Mulona Sululta Woreda, Ethiopia. Sputum specimen was collected initially and for treatment monitoring using culture and for phenotypic drug susceptibility testing (DST) to first-line and second-line TB drugs. Initially, the patient was infected with a mycobacterial strain resistant to the first-line anti-TB drugs Rifampicin (RIF), Isoniazid (INH), and Pyrazinamide (PZA). Later, during treatment, he acquired additional drug resistance to ethambutol (EMB), ofloxacin (OFX), levofloxacin (LFX), moxifloxacin (MFX), and BDQ. The patient was tested with MTBDR plus and MTBDR sl to confirm the presence of resistance-conferring mutation and mutation was detected in rpoB, katG, and gyrA genes. Finally, the patient was registered as having extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) and immediately started an individualized treatment regimen., Conclusion: This case report data has revealed the evolution of BDQ resistance during treatment with a BDQ-containing regimen in Ethiopia. Background: Pelvic organ prolapse is an important public health issue that influences millions of women's lives; through limitations on physical, social, and sexual activities as well as psychological distress. However, there were no reports on the quality of life for women with pelvic organ prolapse in Ethiopia. Therefore this study amid to assess the magnitude of quality of life and its associated factors among women who diagnosed with pelvic organ prolapse in Gynecology outpatient departments in Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples region public referral hospitals; Ethiopia., Method: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples region of public referral hospitals from May 1-July 4, 2022 among 419 diagnosed women with pelvic organ prolapse. A validated tool was used to collect the data. The collected data were entered into Epidata version 3.1 and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression was computed. The p-value of < 0.05 was used to declare the final statistical significance., Result: A total of 409 women with pelvic organ prolapse were included in the study, giving a response rate of 97.6%. The overall poor quality of life was 57.5%. Regarding the quality of life domains; personal relationships (73.6%), were highly affected, and sleep/energy (24.2%) was the least affected domain. Stage III/IV prolapse (AOR = 2.52, 95% CI: 1.34, 4.74), menopause (AOR = 3.21, 95% CI 1.75, 5.97), unmarried women (widowed, divorced) (AOR = 2.81, 95% CI: 1.48, 5.32), and longer duration of prolapse (AOR = 5.8, 95% CI: 3.13, 10.81), were significantly associated with poor quality of life., Conclusion: More than half of women with pelvic organ prolapse had a poor quality of life. Stage III/IV prolapse, longer duration of prolapse, menopause women, and unmarried women are statistically significant factors for the quality of life of women with Pelvic organ prolapse., (© 2023. Background: Anemia is still one of the major public health problems in many developing countries including Ethiopia. Thus, this study aimed to assess individual and contextual-level factors associated with iron-folic acid supplement intake during pregnancy in Ethiopia., Methods: A secondary analysis was done on the 2019 mini-Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS) dataset. A total of 3,927 pregnant women who gave birth five years before the survey were included in the analysis. Multi-level mixed-effect logistic regression analysis was done by STATA/SE version 14.0 to identify individual and contextual-level factors. Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) with 95% Confidence Interval (CI) was used to show the strength and direction of the association. The level of statistical significance was declared at a P value less than 0.05., Results: Those primary educated [AOR = 1.83, 95% CI: (1.24, 2.74)], secondary educated [AOR = 2.75, 95% CI: (1.57, 4.824)], women who had greater than 5 living children [AOR = 2.02, 95% CI: (1.25, 3.27)], women who had ANC visit [AOR = 21.26, 95% CI: (13.56, 33.32)] and women who lived in a cluster with high proportion of women had ANC visit [AOR = 1.72, 95% CI: (1.17, 2.54)] and women who lived in Somali [AOR = 0.44 0.73, 95% CI: (0.22, 0.87)] were significantly associated with iron-folic acid intake during pregnancy., Conclusions: Both individual and contextual-level factors were significantly associated with iron-folic acid intake during pregnancy. From individual-level factors: education status of women, the total numbers of living children, and ANC follow-up are significant and from contextual-level factors: region and living in a high proportion of women who had ANC follow-up were found to have a statistically significant association. Background: Opportunistic infections (OIs) are illnesses that attack people with weakened immune systems, such as HIV patients, more frequently and severely. The majority of opportunistic infections (OIs) are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in HIV/AIDS patients, emerging at the end of the illness. The objective of this study was to assess the incidence and risk factors of opportunistic infections (OIs) in HIV-infected children receiving antiretroviral therapy in public hospitals in Northeast Ethiopia., Methods: A multicenter retrospective follow-up study was undertaken at public hospitals in northeast Ethiopia from September 1, 2010, to January 30, 2022. A total of 341 HIV-infected children on antiretroviral therapy were included in the study. Data was entered using Epi-Data Manager version 4.6.1, and it was analyzed using STATA version 16.1. The opportunistic infection free-survival time was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier survival curve. Bivariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazard models were used to investigate the determinants of opportunistic infections., Results: The overall incidence rate of opportunistic infections (OIs) was 6.0 (95% CI: 5.0-7.1) per 100 child-years of observation. This study's participants were observed for a minimum of 9 months and a maximum of 122 months, for a total of 21,629 months, or 1802.4 years. Children with WHO clinical stages III and IV (AHR: 1.77; 95% CI: 1.13, 2.77), non-users of Cotrimoxazole Preventive Therapy (CPT) (AHR: 2.10; 95% CI: 1.40, 3.08), and low hemoglobin levels (10 mg/dl) (AHR: 1.88; 95% CI: 1.25, 2.82) were identified as significant predictors of opportunistic infection., Conclusion: In this study, the incidence rate of opportunistic infections among HIV-infected children was found to be high when compared to other studies. Low hemoglobin levels (10 mg/dl), low CD4 counts or percentages, clinical stages III and IV, and non-users of CPT were all associated with higher rates of opportunistic infection., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (© 2022 The Authors. Objective: This study aimed to determine the frequencies and trends of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and rifampicin resistance among presumptive tuberculosis patients in Ethiopia, who were tested using the Xpert MTB/RIF assay between 2014 and 2021., Methods: Data were collected retrospectively from patient registries. Laboratory-based data were extracted from the national tuberculosis (TB) referral laboratory database. All patients referred to the National Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory (NTRL) for TB diagnosis from all over the country between March 1, 2014 and September 30, 2021, and tested using the Xpert MTB/RIF assay, were included. The extracted data were entered into a Microsoft Excel sheet and analyzed by Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23., Results: Among a total of 13 772 individuals tested using the Xpert MTB/RIF assay, the majority (8223; 59.7%) were males, and 48.5% (6678) of the individuals were aged between 15 and 39 years. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) was detected in 17.0% (2347) of the examined individuals. Of the detected MTB cases, nearly 9.9% (233) were rifampicin resistant (RR-TB), while 24 (1.0%) were RR-intermediate. Among all RR-TB cases, more than half (125; 53.6%) were detected in males, and 105 were new TB cases. Extrapulmonary (EPTB) patients had a greater rate of rifampicin resistance (11.0%) than pulmonary (PTB) patients (9.6%)., Conclusion: The frequency of TB and RR-TB remains high in the study setting. RR-TB was found to have a statistically significant association with previous anti-TB medication treatment. As a result, improving treatment adherence in recognized instances could assist in preventing MTB and RR-TB cases., (© 2022 The Author(s).)

Background: The rise of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) has presented a substantial challenge to the national tuberculosis (TB) control program. Understanding the epidemiology of pre-extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (pre-XDR-TB) could help clinicians to adapt MDR-TB treatment regimens at an earlier stage. This study aimed to assess second-line anti-TB drug resistance among MDR-TB patients in Ethiopia using routine laboratory-based data., Methods: Laboratory-based cross-sectional data were collected from the national TB reference laboratory and seven regional tuberculosis culture laboratories in Ethiopia from July 2019 to March 2022. The required data, such as drug-susceptibility testing (DST) results and sociodemographics, were collected on a structured checklist from laboratory registration books and electronic databases. Data were entered into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and analyzed using SPSS version 23. Descriptive statistics were performed to show the distribution and magnitude of drug resistance., Results: Second-line drugs (SLDs) susceptibility testing was performed for 644 MDR isolates, of which 19 (3%) were found to be pre-XDR-TB cases. Of the total MDR-TB isolates, 19 (3%) were resistant to at least one fluoroquinolone drug, while 11 (1.7%) were resistant to at least one injectable second-line drug. Of the 644 MDR-TB isolates, 1.9% (5/261) pre-XDR were from new MDR-TB cases, while 3.7% (14/383) were from previously treated MDR-TB patients. The most frequently identified mutations, based on MTBDR sl results, were in codon A90V of the gyrA gene (77.3%) and A1401G of the rrs gene (45.5%)., Conclusion: The overall prevalence of pre-XDR-TB in Ethiopia is considerable. The majority of SLD resistance mutations were in the gyrA gene at position A90V . Modern, rapid DST is necessary to enable identification of pre-XDR-TB and XDR-TB in supporting proper regimen administration for patients., (© 2022 The Author(s).)

Background: Implanon is a long-acting contraceptive method that is extremely effective in preventing pregnancy with a clinical failure rate of less than 1%. Despite these, the rate of Implanon discontinuation is a common problem in various societies and exposes women to unwanted conception and its consequences., Objective: The current study sought to find and consolidate relevant literature on Implanon discontinuation and associated factors in Ethiopia., Methods: Medline, PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and Google Scholar databases were systematically searched for studies published in English before December 2021. The included studies were critically appraised using the JBI instrument for observational studies. STATA version 16 was used for analysis. The presence of statistical heterogeneity was checked using Cochran's Q test, and its level was quantified using I 2 statistics. A pooled estimate of the proportion of outcome variables was calculated. To measure the effect size, pooled odds ratios with 95% CI were computed., Results: The pooled prevalence of Implanon discontinuation in Ethiopia was 32.89%, 95% CI: 24.11%, 41.66%. Experiencing side effects (OR = 2.52, 95% CI 1.75, 3.65), having no children (OR = 1.69, 95% CI 1.15, 2.47), not having received preinsertion counselling (OR = 1.65, 95% CI 1.36, 2.00), having no postinsertion appointment (OR = 2.97, 95% CI 2.10, 4.21), and not satisfied with the service (OR = 2.72, 95% CI 2.47, 5.59) were significantly associated with Implanon discontinuation., Conclusion: The pooled prevalence of Implanon discontinuation in Ethiopia was high. Experiencing side effects, having no child, not receiving preinsertion counselling, having no follow-up appointment, and not being satisfied with the service were significantly associated with Implanon discontinuation. Introduction: Integrated use of postpartum intrauterine contraceptive devices with delivery service during the immediate postpartum period is ideal for both women and health-care providers. However, utilization of intrauterine contraceptive devices during the postpartum period was rare and in Ethiopia, with information regarding uptake of postpartum intrauterine contraceptive devices limited., Objective: Identify determinants of postpartum intrauterine contraceptive devices uptake among women delivering in public hospitals of South Gondar zone, Northwest Ethiopia, 2019., Methods: An unmatched case-control study was conducted in public hospitals of South Gondar, Ethiopia, from August 1, 2019, to November 10, 2019. A total of 140 cases and 280 controls have actively participated in the study. Five hospitals were selected by simple random sampling. Cases were selected consecutively, whereas two controls for each case were recruited by the lottery method. Pretested questionnaires were used to collect data and it was entered into Epidata version 4.4.2. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify variables associated with the use of outcome and adjusted odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval was used to determine the association between independent and outcome variables., Results: Completing secondary education (AOR = 4.5, 95%CI 2.3-8.85), having a total number of children of 3-4 (AOR = 3.6, 95%CI 1.25-10.2), having  ≥ 5 (AOR = 4.7, 95%CI 1.5-15.3), attending 3 antenatal care (AOR = 2.8, 95%CI 1.44-5.6), ever hearing about postpartum IUCD (AOR = 6.6, 95%CI 2.7-16.1), and having counseling from health-care provider about a postpartum intrauterine contraceptive device (AOR = 6.2, 95%CI 2.99-12.8) were significantly associated with uptake of the postpartum intrauterine contraceptive. Conclusion and Recommendation. Completing secondary education, having 3-4 and ≥5 children, attending three antenatal care, ever hearing about postpartum IUCD, and having counseling from health-care providers about the postpartum intrauterine contraceptive device among women were significantly associated with uptake of an intrauterine contraceptive device after birth. Background: Globally, in 2012, about 1.2 million estimated cases were reported with ~ 135,000 deaths annually. In Ethiopia, specifically in our study area, limited information is found on the oropharyngeal carriage, antimicrobial resistance pattern, and associated risk factors for N. meningitidis among school children. So, the aim of this study was to assess oropharyngeal carriage rate of N. meningitidis, antibiotic susceptibility pattern and associated risk factors among primary school children in Gondar town, Northwest Ethiopia., Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted from January to April, 2019 in Gondar town. Multi stage simple random sampling technique was used. A total of 524 oropharyngeal swabs were collected using sterile plastic cotton swabs. Modified Thayer Martin media was used for primary isolation. Antimicrobial susceptibility pattern was done based on Kirby-Bauer method on Muller-Hinton agar supplemented with 5% sheep blood. Multidrug resistance was defined as resistance of an isolate to two or more antimicrobial classes tested. Logistic regression model was used to see the association between dependent variables (Carriage rate of Neisseria meningitidis, Serogroups of Neisseria meningitidis and Antimicrobial susceptibility patterns) and independent variables (Socio-demographic data and risk factors). Variables with a P- value ≤0.2 during bivariable analysis was taken to multivariable analysis to check significant association of meningococcal carriage with risk factors. Finally, a P-value < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Data was summarized using numbers, percentages and tables., Results: A total of 53(10.1%) (CI: 7.6-12.8) N. meningitidis isolates were identified. Serogroup A 13 (24.5%) was the most prevalent followed by Y/W135 11(20.7%) whereas serogroup B 4(7.6%) was the least identified serotype. Meningococcal isolates were resistant to ciprofloxacin (45.3%) and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (73.6%). Overall, most of meningococcal isolates showed about 32(60.4%) multidrug resistance. Meningococcal carriage rate was significantly associated with family size, tonsillectomy, passive smoking, number of students per class, sharing utensils, history of visiting healthcare institutions, and indoor kitchen., Conclusion: This study highlights the need for reinforcement of case-based, laboratory confirmed surveillance of N. meningitidis carriage in Ethiopian elementary school students to enable mapping of distribution of serotypes of the causative organisms across the country and determine the current potential necessity of vaccination.
