Magnetocaloric and related properties of Ru and Ni substituted (MnFe)2(PSi) are presented. It is found that Ru and Ni are effective doping elements to reduce the thermal hysteresis of (MnFe)2(PSi). The origin of the thermal hysteresis is discussed on the basis of a thermodynamic model. It is shown that the elastic energy is responsible for the thermal hysteresis. We also show recent developments of the production process of Mn compounds in an industrial scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The clinical significance of lung tumor spread through air spaces (STAS) has been extensively studied, and is recognized as a unique pattern of invasion. Previous studies of STAS have focused primarily on STAS in alveolar spaces, whereas STAS in the bronchiolar spaces (bronchiolar STAS) has been described in only a few case reports only. Here, we examined 306 cases of primary lung adenocarcinoma and found that bronchiolar STAS was present in 18%. Bronchiolar STAS was associated with an inferior prognosis, more advanced stage, and higher histologic grade. No significant difference in clinicopathological factors or prognosis was observed between cases with bronchiolar STAS and those with alveolar STAS alone. Notably, bronchiolar STAS often occurred simultaneously with alveolar STAS and endobronchial spread of adenocarcinoma, particularly when bronchiolar STAS was present outside the main tumor. We also identified cases where bronchiolar STAS and endobronchial spread of adenocarcinoma occurred simultaneously in the same bronchi or bronchioles located outside the main tumor, as well as cases with bronchiolar STAS adjacent to intrapulmonary metastatic nodules. Our results highlight the significant role of bronchiolar STAS in the aerogenous spread of adenocarcinoma cells. Bronchiolar STAS can be regarded as a histologic variant of alveolar STAS. Background: The optimal approach for the safe implementation and education of robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy (RPD) remains unclear. Prolonged operation time may cause surgeon fatigue and result in perioperative complications. To solve this issue, our department adopted task division by the console surgeon turnover between resection and reconstruction in 2022., Methods: This study retrospectively investigated consecutive patients who underwent RPD from November 2009 (initial introduction of RPD) to December 2023. The analysis excluded patients who underwent concomitant resection of other organs. The cases performed by a single console surgeon (single approach) were compared with those performed by two or more console surgeons (multiple approach)., Results: This study analyzed 85 consecutive RPD cases, including 51 with the single approach and 34 with the multiple approach. The operation time was significantly shorter (832 vs. 618 min, p < 0.001), and the postoperative major complication was less frequent (45% vs. 12%, p = 0.003) in the multiple approach group, although less experienced surgeons performed the multiple approach (number of RPD experiences: 19 cases vs. 5 cases, p < 0.001). The console surgeon turnover between the resection and reconstruction resulted in a safe pancreatojejunostomy performed by the less experienced surgeon (number of pancreatic reconstruction experiences: 6.5 vs. 14 cases, p = 0.010). Surgeons who started RPD with a multiple approach observed a reduction in surgical time and a lower incidence of complications earlier than those who started with a single approach., Conclusion: Task division during the early introduction phase of RPD using the multiple approach demonstrated potential contributions to improved surgical outcomes and enhanced educational benefits., (© 2024. Purpose: High b-value acquisition and diffusion-weighted imaging with background suppression (DWIBS) are desirable in high-specificity breast cancer diagnosis on non-contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging; however, this inherently results in a lower signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Compressed sensitivity encoding (C-SENSE), which combines SENSE with compressed sensing, improves the SNR by reducing noise. Recent technological improvements allow us to incorporate this acceleration technique into echo-planar imaging, called echo-planar imaging with C-SENSE (EPICS). This study aimed to compare image quality and reliability of the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) between DWIBS obtained using SENSE and EPICS in patients with small breast cancers., Methods: Thirty-seven patients with pathologically confirmed breast cancer underwent DWIBS, and images were reconstructed using both conventional SENSE (SENSE-DWIBS) and EPICS (EPICS-DWIBS). Two board-certified radiologists independently evaluated lesion conspicuity (LC) and noise using a 5-point grading scale. The same 2 radiologists independently measured SNR, contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and the mean cancer ADC. The Pearson coefficient and Bland-Altman plot were applied to assess the accuracy of ADCs., Results: LC scores were higher with EPICS than with SENSE, reaching significance for one reviewer but not the other reviewer. Noise ratings on visual evaluation were significantly lower with EPICS than with SENSE (P < 0.001 for both reviewers). SNR was significantly higher with EPICS than with SENSE (P < 0.005 for both reviewers). CNR was significantly higher with EPICS than with SENSE (P < 0.001 for both reviewers). Bland-Altman plots of cancer ADCs using EPICS-DWIBS and SENSE-DWIBS showed excellent concordance, with a bias of 0.026 × 10 -3 mm 2 /s and limits of agreement ranging 0.054 × 10 -3 mm 2 /s; the Pearson's correlation coefficient was 0.997 (P < 0.0001)., Conclusion: EPICS enhances breast DWIBS image quality, with improved SNR and CNR and reduced noise levels. The ADCs of breast cancers obtained using EPICS were almost perfectly correlated with those obtained using conventional SENSE.

Recently, effectiveness of local treatment for oncological outcomes for patients with metastatic prostate cancer (PC) has been reported. We performed hemi-ablation with high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for a patient with a localized reducted solitary lesion in the prostate, which was diagnosed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-transrectal ultrasound fusion image-guided target biopsy with PSA level of 0.24 ng/mL, after androgen receptor signaling inhibitors (ARSIs) and chemotherapy for metastatic PC. Prostate specific antigen levels decreased to 0.01ng/mL at 1 month after the treatment, and cancer suspicious lesion disappeared on MRI. During the follow-up of 24 months, there was no elevation of PSA level with no severe complication related to the treatment. HIFU has possibility to be an effective and minimally invasive treatment as a local treatment for the localized reducted solitary lesion in the prostate after ARSIs and chemotherapy for metastatic PC.

Objective: The risk factors for residual liver recurrence after resection of colorectal cancer liver metastases were analyzed separately for synchronous and metachronous metastases., Methods: This retrospective study included 236 patients (139 with synchronous and 97 with metachronous lesions) who underwent initial surgery for colorectal cancer liver metastases from April 2010 to December 2021 at the Fujita Health University Hospital. We performed univariate and multivariate analyses of risk factors for recurrence based on clinical background., Results: Univariate analysis of synchronous liver metastases identified three risk factors: positive lymph nodes (p = 0.018, HR = 2.067), ≥3 liver metastases (p < 0.001, HR = 2.382), and use of adjuvant chemotherapy (p = 0.013, HR = 0.560). Multivariate analysis identified the same three factors. For metachronous liver metastases, univariate and multivariate analysis identified ≥3 liver metastases as a risk factor (p = 0.002, HR = 2.988); however, use of adjuvant chemotherapy after hepatic resection was not associated with a lower risk of recurrence for metachronous lesions. Inverse probability of treatment weighting analysis of patients with these lesions with or without adjuvant chemotherapy after primary resection showed that patients with metachronous liver metastases who did not receive this treatment had fewer recurrences when adjuvant therapy was administered after subsequent liver resection, although the difference was not significant. Patients who received adjuvant chemotherapy after hepatic resection had less recurrence but less benefit from this treatment., Conclusion: Risk factors for liver recurrence after resection of synchronous liver metastases were positive lymph nodes, ≥3 liver metastases, and no postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy. A 19-year-old Japanese man was referred for a further evaluation of liver dysfunction. Despite the absence of symptoms or obesity, the liver biopsy results were consistent with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Subsequent investigations revealed low serum ceruloplasmin, increased urinary copper excretion, and a known mutation c.3809A>G (p.Asn1270Ser) in the copper-transporting enzyme P-type ATPase (ATP7B) gene, leading to a diagnosis of Wilson's disease. A previously unreported variant, i.e., c.3866A>T (p.Asp1289Val) was detected on the patient's other allele and was considered a novel mutation, classified as 'likely pathogenic' according to the American College of Medical Genetics guidelines.

Backgrounds: Pancreatojejunostomy is a technically demanding procedure during robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy (RPD). Modified Blumgart anastomosis (mBA) is a common method for the pancreatojejunostomy; however, the technical details for robotic mBA are not well established. During RPD, we performed a mBA for the pancreatojejunostomy using thread manipulation with gauze and an additional assist port., Methods: Patients who underwent robotic pancreatoduodenectomy at Fujita Health University from November 2009 to May 2023 were retrospectively investigated, and technical details for the robotic-modified Blumgart anastomosis were demonstrated., Results: Among 78 patients who underwent RPD during the study period, 33 underwent robotic mBA. Postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) occurred in six patients (18%). None of the patients suffered POPF Grade C according to the international study group of pancreatic surgery definition. The anastomotic time for mBA was 80 min (54-125 min)., Conclusion: Robotic mBA resulted in reasonable outcomes. Robotic distal pancreatectomy (RDP) has emerged as a minimally invasive approach to left-sided pancreatic tumors. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the robot-assisted approach (RAA) using a laparoscopic articulating vessel-sealing device (LAVSD) during RDP by comparing it with the pure-robotic approach (PRA). Among 62 patients who underwent RDP between April 2020 and December 2023 at Fujita Health University, 22 underwent RAA (the RAA group). In RAA, console surgeons mainly prepared the surgical fields, and assistant surgeons actively dissected the adipose and connective tissues using LAVSD. The surgical outcomes of these patients were compared with those of 40 consecutive patients who underwent RDP with PRA. In total, 28 males and 34 females with a median age of 71 years were analyzed. The console surgeon's prior experience of performing RDP was similar between the groups (RAA; median, 6 [range, 0-36], PRA; median, 5.5 [range, 0-34] cases). The operation time was significantly shorter in the TST group (median, 300.5 [range, 202-557] vs. 363.5 [range, 230-556] min, p = 0.015). Major complications (Clavien-Dindo ≥ grade 3a) occurred less frequently in the RAA group (4.6% vs. 25.0%, p = 0.028). Although the median postoperative hospital stay was slightly shorter in the RAA group (median, 12 [range, 8-38] vs. 14.5 [8-44] days, p = 0.095), no statistically significant difference was observed. Cell death-inducing p53-target protein 1 (CDIP1) is a proapoptotic protein that is normally expressed at low levels and is upregulated by genotoxic and endoplasmic reticulum stresses. CDIP1 has been reported to be localized to endosomes and to interact with several proteins, including B-cell receptor-associated protein 31 (BAP31) and apoptosis-linked gene 2 (ALG-2). However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying CDIP1 expression-induced apoptosis remain unclear. In this study, we first demonstrated that CDIP1 was upregulated after treatment with the anticancer drug adriamycin in human breast cancer MCF-7 cells but was degraded rapidly in the lysosomal pathway. We also demonstrated that treatment with the cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5) inhibitor roscovitine led to an increase in the electrophoretic mobility of CDIP1. In addition, a phosphomimetic mutation at Ser-32 in CDIP1 resulted in an increase in CDIP1 expression-induced apoptosis. We also found that CDIP1 expression led to the induction of autophagy prior to apoptosis. Treatment of cells expressing CDIP1 with SAR405, an inhibitor of the class III phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase VPS34, caused a reduction in autophagy and promoted apoptosis. Therefore, autophagy is thought to be a defense mechanism against CDIP1 expression-induced apoptosis.

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) play an important role in creating an immunosuppressive microenvironment in cancer tissues. However, the mechanisms by which Tregs are activated and suppress cancer immunity remain unclear. To elucidate these mechanisms, we performed a T cell receptor (TCR) repertoire analysis of Tregs and conventional T cells in peripheral blood, draining lymph nodes (DLNs), and cancer tissues of patients with head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC). We found that the TCR repertoire was skewed in cancer tissue and metastatic DLNs (M-DLNs) compared with non-metastatic DLNs, and TCR repertoire similarities in Tregs and CD8+ T cells between M-DLNs and cancer tissue were high compared with those at other sites. These results suggest that Tregs and CD8+ T cells are activated in M-DLNs and cancer tissues by cancer antigens, such as neoantigens, and shared antigens and Tregs suppress CD8+ T cell function in a cancer antigen-specific manner in M-DLNs and cancer tissue. Moreover, M-DLNs might be a source of Tregs and CD8+ T cells recruited into the cancer tissue. Introduction: Hibernomas are benign tumors of brown adipose tissue. Hibernoma in the renal sinus is extremely rare. Herein, we present the third known case of renal hibernoma., Case Presentation: A 71-year-old man reported to our department with a left kidney tumor with an average growth rate of 5 mm/year and a progressive contrast effect on computed tomography. It was diagnosed as a hibernoma following a laparoscopic radical nephrectomy., Conclusion: We encountered a rare case of a hibernoma in the renal sinus. Purpose: As a safe and reliable alternative to central venous catheters (CVCs), peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) are commonly used in clinical practice. However, the insertion of PICCs by nurse practitioners (NPs), especially in Japan, has not been reported extensively. Thus, we investigated the safety and efficiency of PICC insertions by NPs., Methods: The participants were 1322 patients who underwent PICC insertion by NPs at Fujita Health University Hospital (FNPs). The basilic vein in the brachium was the preferred vein for insertion; the brachial vein was the alternative. Patients were monitored from the time of PICC insertion until its removal. Ultrasonography-guided puncture was used for all catheter insertions, and the catheter tip was replaced into the superior vena cava under fluoroscopic imaging with maximal sterile barrier precautions. The outcomes of the PICC insertions by the FNPs were evaluated retrospectively., Results: Overall, 23 FNPs inserted a collective total of 1322 PICCs, which remained in place for a collective total of 23,619 catheter days. The rate of successful PICC insertion was 99% (1310 patients). The median time taken for PICC insertion was 12 min (interquartile range, 10-15 min). Intraoperative complications occurred in two patients (0.2%). The confirmed incidence of central line-associated bloodstream infection was 3.4% (45 patients), and these infections occurred on 1.9 per 1000 catheter days. The median duration of PICC placement was 15 days (range, 10-23 days)., Conclusion: PICC insertion by NPs is safe and a potential alternative to CVC insertion by surgeons., (© 2023. Aim: The spread of lung adenocarcinoma cells into the bronchi and bronchioles is not well documented. We termed this histological finding "endobronchial spreading of adenocarcinoma" (EBSA) and investigated its prevalence and clinical significance., Methods and Results: We reviewed 320 resected specimens from patients diagnosed with invasive adenocarcinoma, and EBSA was observed in 144 patients (45%). EBSA was significantly associated with advanced pathological stage, higher histological grade, larger tumour invasion, lymphovascular infiltration, and spread through air spaces. Patients with EBSA had significantly shorter relapse-free survival (RFS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) in univariate analysis (P < 0.001). In a subgroup analysis of patient with small-sized (invasion size ≤30 mm) adenocarcinoma in the localized stage, EBSA was an independent inferior prognostic indicator in multivariate analysis. In a subgroup analysis of patients with small-sized Grade 1 nonmucinous adenocarcinoma (n = 61), EBSA was observed in 11 patients, and the presence of EBSA was associated with significantly shorter RFS and CSS (P = 0.026 and P = 0.001, respectively)., Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that EBSA is a significant risk factor for disease recurrence and cancer-related deaths.
