Soil carbon sequestration is an indicator for the climate change mitigation performance of agricultural land management. Already in the SECO-funded programme ‘Higher Value-Added Trade from the Organic and the Dairy Sector in Ukraine (Quality FOOD Trade Program)’, which started in 2020, soil carbon sequestration has been chosen as an impact indicator. The same applies for the SECO-funded project Organic Trade for Development (OT4D), which started in September 2019. Based on the statistics of certified organic farmland and a rough formula, FiBL calculated the net soil carbon sequestration effect under certified organic management for the period from 2011 to 2021. Given the focus on crop production on these areas and the large areas concerned, FiBL suggests to use an average soil carbon sequestration value from the literature to get a gross picture on the sequestration potential without incurring huge measurement costs. This value is taken from a meta-analysis from 2012 mainly covering temperate zones, thus largely being adequate for the climatic situation in Eastern Europe.

Der Klimawandel ist eine der zentralen Herausforderungen unserer Zeit und alle Bereiche der Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft müssen zu dessen Minderung beitragen. Dies betrifft auch die Landwirtschaft und der Biolandbau mit seinem Fokus auf nachhaltigem Wirtschaften kann hier eine Pionierrolle einnehmen. Der vorliegende Artikel präsentiert die Ergebnisse einer Studie aus dem Jahr 2022, die beispielhaft darlegt, wie der Biolandbau in der Schweiz bis 2040 klimaneutral werden könnte. Dies zu erreichen ist möglich, aber sehr herausfordernd. Tatsächliche Emissionsreduktionen sind dabei sekundär, weil der Großteil der Klimaneutralität über Kompensationen (Bodenkohlenstoffbindung, Agroforst, Agri-Photovoltaik) und grundlegende Konsum- und Produktionssystemveränderungen (weniger tierische Produkte, also auch weniger Tiere) erreicht werden müsste.

Methoden der nachhaltigen Landwirtschaft und klimagerechten Lebensmittelproduktion können die Bildung von Humus und damit die Speicherung von Kohlenstoff im Boden fördern. Steigende Temperaturen, kleinere Tierbestände und ein reduzierter Einsatz von Mineraldünger bergen aber das Risiko, die Biomasseproduktion und den Humus eher zu reduzieren.

Agriculture feeds a growing world population, but is also one of the main causes of the global environmental crisis. The sustainable use of soil as a resource is the key challenge for the agricultural sector. Using the example of the 45-year-old DOK trial near Basel, the opportunities for organic farming to provide important ecosystem services in the long term will be demonstrated. The lecture will focus on the effects of conventional and organic land use systems on soil quality indicators such as soil carbon, soil biology and greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, the limitations of organic land use systems will be discussed and further food for thought on sustainable land use will be provided.

Der Klimawandel stellt Böden und die landwirtschaftliche Produktion vor Herausforderungen. Der Einsatz von Pflanzenkohle (PK) in landwirtschaftlich genutzten Böden soll sich positiv auf die organische Substanz des Bodens, mikrobielle Prozesse, das Wasserhaltevermögen sowie Nähr- und Schadstoffe auswirken. Aufgrund seiner hohen Stabilität kann PK auch zur Sequestrierung von Kohlenstoff (C) verwendet werden und Kohlenstoffzertifikate generieren. Für eine grossflächige Anwendung von PK müssen die langfristigen Auswirkungen unter Praxisbedingungen untersucht werden. Zu diesem Zweck untersuchen das FiBL und die Universität Bern in dem von Grün Stadt Zürich angelegten Langzeitversuch "Black goes green" die Auswirkungen von PK im Boden auf chemische, physikalische und biologische Parameter sowie die Erträge.

In Österreich sind die Klimaziele hochgesteckt. Bis 2040 soll Klimaneutralität auf nationaler Ebene erreicht werden. So müssen auch in der Landwirtschaft Veränderungen stattfinden. Der Bio-Landbau hat hier einige Vorteile zu bieten. Zur Erreichung der Klimaziele sind in der Landwirtschaft unterschiedliche Maßnahmen notwendig. Es ist zwischen Maßnahmen, die Emissionen auf dem eigenen Betrieb vermeiden oder reduzieren, und solchen, die Emissionen kompensieren, zu unterscheiden. Eine Gülleabdeckung reduziert zum Beispiel die Emissionen aus der Hofdüngerlagerung. Der Ausgleich von Emissionen kann unter anderem durch die vermehrte Speicherung von Kohlenstoff gefördert werden. So speichern humusaufbauende Maßnahmen und lebende Biomasse wie Bäume und Hecken Kohlenstoff.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) originates from a complex mixture of organic materials, and to better understand its role in soil functions, one must characterise its chemical composition. However, current methods, such as solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, are time-consuming and expensive. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy in the visible and infrared regions (vis–NIR: 350–2500 nm; mid-IR: 4000–400 cm-1) can also be used to characterise SOC chemistry; however, it is difficult to know the frequencies where the information occurs. Thus, we correlated the C functional groups from the 13C NMR to the frequencies in the vis–NIR and mid-IR spectra using two methods: 1) 2-dimensional correlations of 13C NMR spectra and the diffuse reflectance spectra, and 2) modelling the NMR functional C groups with the reflectance spectra using support vector machines (validated using 5 times repeated 10-fold cross-validation). For the study, we used 99 mineral soils from the agricultural regions of Sweden. The results show clear correlations between organic functional C groups measured with NMR and specific frequencies in the vis–NIR and mid-IR spectra. While the 2D correlations showed general relationships (mainly related to the total SOC content), analysing the importance of the wavelengths in the SVM models revealed more detail. Generally, models using mid-IR spectra produced slightly better estimates than the vis–NIR. The best estimates were for the alkyl C group (R2 = 0.83 and 0.85, vis–NIR and mid-IR, respectively), and the O/N-alkyl C group was the most difficult to estimate (R2 = 0.34 and 0.38, vis–NIR and mid-IR, respectively). Combining 13CNMR with the cost effective diffuse reflectance methods could potentially increase the number of measured samples and improve the spatial and temporal characterisation of SOC. However, more studies with a wider range of soil types and land management systems are needed to further evaluate the conditions under which these

For decades, conservation tillage has been promoted as a measure to increase carbon stocks in arable soils. Since organic farming improves soil quality and soil carbon storage, reduced tillage under organic farming conditions may further enhance this potential. Therefore, we assessed soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks of reduced tillage compared with mouldboard ploughing in nine organic farming field trials in France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland with the same sampling and analytical protocol. We sampled soil cores until a depth of 100 cm to determine soil carbon stocks that are relevant for climate change mitigation but are often overlooked in tillage studies with shallow sampling depths. The studied field experiments were between 8 and 21 years old and comprised different soil types with clay contents ranging from 10% to 50%. SOC stocks increased with increasing clay-to-silt ratio, precipitation and organic fertiliser input. Across sites, reduced tillage in comparison with ploughing increased SOC stocks in the surface layer (0–10/15 cm) by 20.8% or 3.8 Mg ha-1, depleted SOC stocks in the intermediate soil layers to 50 cm soil depth with a maximum depletion of 6.6% or 1.6 Mg ha-1 in 15/ 20–30 cm and increased SOC stocks in the deepest (70–100 cm) soil layer by 14.4% or 2.5 Mg ha-1. The subsoil SOC stock increase may be linked to the inherent soil heterogeneity. Cumulative SOC stocks increased by 1.7% or 1.5 Mg ha-1 (0–50 cm, n = 9) and 3.6% or 4.0 Mg ha-1 (0–100 cm, n = 7) by reduced tillage compared with ploughing with estimated mean C sequestration rates of 0.09 and 0.27 Mg ha-1 yr-1, respectively. There was no effect of field trial duration on tillage induced cumulative SOC stocks differences. Under reduced tillage, biomass production was 8% lower resulting in a decrease of crop C input by 6%. “Carbon Farming” gains increasing importance in the European Union and rules for its implementation may soon be harmonized and codified. How to best do this is not yet clear and subject to ongoing debates.

Klimaneutrales Wirtschaften ist angesichts des immer deutlicher wahrnehmbaren und anthropogen bedingten Klimawandels eine gesellschaftliche Notwendigkeit, die von allen Wirtschaftsbereichen erbracht werden muss. Dieser Notwendigkeit muss sich auch die Landwirtschaft, und insbesondere die auf Nachhaltigkeit fokussierte biologische Landwirtschaft stellen. Dabei wird Klimaneutralität im Sinne eines „Net Zero bzw. Net Zero Carbon Emission“ wie folgt definiert und erreicht: Für ein Betrieb, Produkt, Unternehmen oder Wirtschaftsbereich werden zunächst alle Treibhausgas (THG)-Emissionen – in der Regel Methan (CH4), Lachgas (N2O) und Kohlenstoffdioxid (CO2) – gemessen oder berechnet und zu einem CO2-Fussabdruck kombiniert. Um die Net Zero Emission zu erreichen stehen nun drei Stellschrauben zur Verfügung: 1. Maximale Reduktion der THG Emissionen; 2. Kompensation der unvermeidlichen THG-Emissionen durch dauerhafte C-Speicherung (Sequestrierung) im eigenen Wirkungsbereich; und 3. Kompensation der unvermeidlichen THG-Emissionen an anderer Stelle. Ziel der vorliegenden Vorstudie war es, erstmals gesondert für den biologischen Landbau in der Schweiz den CO2-Fussabdruck dieses Wirtschaftsbereiches abzuschätzen und die Möglichkeit der Erreichung des Net Zero Zustands zu bewerten. Dazu haben wir in einer Literaturanalyse den Stand des Wissens zu Wirksamkeit und Umsetzbarkeit von THG-Reduktionsstrategien für im Bereich der biologischen Landwirtschaft zusammengestellt.

There is growing awareness of the role that agricultural soils can play for climate change mitigation. Agricultural management that increases soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks constitutes a nature-based solution for carbon dioxide removal. As soils store about twice the amount of carbon found in the atmosphere, even small relative increases could significantly reduce global warming. However, increasing SOC requires management changes that come with costs to the farmers. In this regard, soil carbon certificates could provide a much-needed financial incentive: Farmers register their fields with commercial providers who certify any SOC increase achieved during a set period of time. The certificates are then sold on the voluntary carbon-offset market. We analysed the suitability of soil carbon certificates for climate change mitigation from the perspectives of soil sciences, agricultural management, and governance. In particular, we addressed questions of quantification, additionality, permanence, changes in emissions, leakage effects, transparency, legitimacy and accountability, as well as synergies and trade-offs with other societal targets. Soil properties and the mechanisms by which carbon is stored in soils have strong implications for the assessment. Soils have a limited storage capacity, and SOC is not sequestered but its SOC stocks are the dynamic result of plant derived inputs and losses mainly in the form of microbial respiration. The higher the SOC stock, the higher the annual carbon inputs that is needed to maintain it. If carbon friendly management is discontinued, elevated SOC levels will therefore revert to their original level. We found that while changes in agricultural management that increase SOC are highly desirable and offer multiple-co benefits with climate change adaptation, soil carbon certificates are unsuitable as a tool. They are unlikely to deliver the climate change mitigation they promise as certificate providers cannot guarantee permanence

Die Landwirtschaft spielt im Klimawandel eine bedeutende Rolle. Als Verursacherin von Klimagasen trägt sie einerseits zur globalen Erwärmung bei, verfügt aber andererseits auch über ein grosses Potenzial zur Minderung des Klimawandels. In diesem Faktenblatt wird die vielseitige Rolle der Landwirtschaft im Klimawandel näher beleuchtet. Dabei werden verschiedene wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse dargestellt, die das Potenzial des Biolandbaus zur Minderung des Klimawandels zeigen.

In einer koordinierten Probenahme in 9 Langzeitversuchen in der Schweiz, Deutschland, Frankreich und Niederlande wurden Humusvorräte bis in 1m Tiefe bestimmt. Verglichen wurde die Pflugbewirtschaftung mit der reduzierten Bodenbearbeitung. Nach 8-21 Jahren ergab sich eine Umverteilung der Humusvorräte innerhalb des Profils. Eine Nettozunahme wurde nur in wenigen Langzeitversuchen gemessen.

L’agriculture joue un rôle important dans le changement climatique. D’une part, ses émissions de gaz à effet de serre contribuent au réchauffement mondial; d’autre part, elle dispose d’un fort potentiel d’atténuation du changement climatique. The consequences of the current COVID-19 pandemic for mental health remain unclear, especially regarding the effects on suicidal behaviors. To assess changes in the pattern of suicide attempt (SA) admissions and completed suicides (CS) in association with the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of a longitudinal study, SA admissions and CS are systematically documented and analyzed in all psychiatric hospitals in Frankfurt/Main (765.000 inhabitants). Number, sociodemographic factors, diagnoses and methods of SA and CS were compared between the periods of March–December 2019 and March–December 2020. The number of CS did not change, while the number of SA significantly decreased. Age, sex, occupational status, and psychiatric diagnoses did not change in SA, whereas the percentage of patients living alone while attempting suicide increased. The rate and number of intoxications as a SA method increased and more people attempted suicide in their own home, which was not observed in CS. Such a shift from public places to home is supported by the weekday of SA, as the rate of SA on weekends was significantly lower during the pandemic, likely because of lockdown measures. Only admissions to psychiatric hospitals were recorded, but not to other institutions. As it seems unlikely that the number of SA decreased while the number of CS remained unchanged, it is conceivable that the number of unreported SA cases increased during the pandemic. Our data suggest that a higher number of SA remained unnoticed during the pandemic because of their location and the use of methods associated with lower lethality.

The biogeochemical functioning of soils (e.g., soil carbon stabilization and nutrient cycling) is determined at the interfaces of specific soil structures (e.g., aggregates, particulate organic matter (POM) and organo‐mineral associations). With the growing accessibility of spectromicroscopic techniques, there is an increase in nano‐ to microscale analyses of biogeochemical interfaces at the process scale, reaching from the distribution of elements and isotopes to the localization of microorganisms. A widely used approach to study intact soil structures is the fixation and embedding of intact soil samples in resin and the subsequent analyses of soil cross‐sections using spectromicroscopic techniques. However, it is still challenging to link such microscale approaches to larger scales at which normally bulk soil analyses are conducted. Here we report on the use of laboratory imaging Vis–NIR spectroscopy on resin embedded soil sections and a procedure for supervised image classification to determine the microscale soil structure arrangement, including the quantification of soil organic matter fractions. This approach will help to upscale from microscale spectromicroscopic techniques to the centimetre and possibly pedon scale. Thus, we demonstrate a new approach to integrate microscale soil analyses into pedon‐scale conceptual and experimental approaches.

Soils contain more carbon (C) in the form of organic matter (soil organic matter = SOM) than the entire atmosphere and global vegetation combined. They are a central component of the global C cycle and its largest dynamic reservoir. Smart agricultural practices are discussed, on the one hand, as a way to mitigate climate change because they can increase the amount of SOM and thus actively remove C from the atmosphere. On the other hand, all intensively used soils lose C in the long term. The scientific key questions in this context revolve around the extent and dynamics of C storage, as well as the associated stabilization mechanisms involved and effects of agricultural use on the C budget.The DOK experiment is a long-term agronomic field trial near Basel (Switzerland) that compares biodynamic, organic and conventional management systems since 40 years. Within the "DynaCarb" project, we investigate how the management systems affect SOM fractions during the 40-year experimental period. We compare the unfertilized control to a purely mineral, a purely organic, and a combined fertilized, mineral-organic variant (four field replicates each) during six crop rotation cycles. By using a combined density and particle size fractionation, the SOM is separated into particulate and mineral-associated fractions and their development is quantitatively investigated in archived samples from 1982, 1989, 1996, 2003, 2010, and 2017."DynaCarb" investigates the medium- and long-term effects of different agricultural systems on SOM. These results are of great importance for the evaluation of the C sequestration potential of agricultural soils and for the identification of suitable management and fertilization strategies.
