This scoping review explores the empirical reach of Johnson's typology over 25 years. Methods Articles were identified through searches of four databases and were included if they were an empirical journal article with Johnson's typology central to the analysis (n = 82) and published between 1996 and 2020. Results Empirical work reached its highest points in 2014 and 2016, with 10 articles published each year, but has since declined. The mean number of articles published per year is less than four (M = 3.28). Authorship appears to have diffused well, as there were 56 different lead authors of the 82 articles, and no one author contributed to more than 10% of the empirical work. Articles appeared in 37 journals and were heavily concentrated in journals on interpersonal violence and in the disciplines of Family Studies and Psychology. Conclusions Empirical engagement with Johnson's typology is modest yet extends across a large number of independent authors and appears in journals across multiple disciplines. It is not clear why there has not been more empirical engagement given the widespread and increasing citation of Johnson's work, but perhaps this is part of the reason why the typology has not ended the gender symmetry debate. Moving forward requires better understanding of why intimate partner violence researchers often choose not to empirically test Johnson's typology.

Broadly, it distinguished different ways that IPV manifested and motivations for perpetrating IPV. Contemporary queer theorists and researchers have critiqued the typology as being too cis-heteronormative, or assuming cisgender identity and heterosexuality as default identities and experiences. Our purpose then is to make visible the unintended cis-heteronormativity in Johnson's typology of IPV and articulate ways to enhance its use with queer populations. Method We used queer theory to reconceptualize cis-heteronormative tenants of Johnson's (2008 (See CR44)) typology and propose a more inclusive understanding of IPV. We also used queer of color critique to consider additional intersectional locations (e.g., race) that can lead to relational power imbalances. Results We developed two queer theoretical extensions to Johnson's (2008 (See CR44)) typology that are reflective of the dynamics of diversity in queer relationships. In them, we engage in Challenging Categorization through Contextualizing Prevalence Estimates of IPV Among Queer US Populations and (Re)Conceptualizing Categorization (Extension 1). We also engage in (Re)Conceptualizing Power and Control (Extension 2). Conclusion Our theoretical extensions can be used to advance the field of IPV research in ways that are inclusive of queer peoples' experiences of IPV.

This study applies Bronfenbrenner's model to consider the etiology of Johnson's types at multiple social-ecological levels. Method: To test the hypothesis that pathways from local social and structural conditions to IPV differ by type of IPV, I reanalyzed longitudinal data from a recent study that explored the role of factors at multiple social-ecological levels on physical IPV in a highly vulnerable sample: 1,112 different-sex couples in which the male partner had recently returned from prison. Results: In fitted structural equation models, local social and structural conditions predict both situational couple violence (SCV) and coercive controlling violence (CCV). However, the influence of local conditions on each type of IPV occurs via different proximal factors. Local conditions predict SCV via hopelessness and predict CCV via post-traumatic stress and dysfunctional conflict. Conclusions: These exploratory findings indicate that local social and structural conditions could promote both SCV and CCV, but via different proximal processes. They suggest that IPV research has much to gain from integrating the distinct theoretical and methodological contributions of scholarship on Johnson's typology and ongoing inquiry into the broader social ecology of IPV.

Johnson's, 1995 (See CR10) typology led to a paradigm shift in research and the clinical work of many mental health providers who seek to prevent or treat IPV. Johnson's idea that there is more than one type of violence, i.e., situational couple violence and intimate terrorism, moved many from the idea that it is never appropriate to offer conjoint treatment to couples who have experienced IPV. Instead, it became increasingly clear that clinicians have a responsibility to provide a clear determination of if there has been IPV in the couple we are treating, and if so, to determine the type of IPV to individualize treatment based on the IPV type. In this commentary, we also address the impact of Johnson's work on our own clinical work and on the mental health field. Finally, as we review Johnson's work and the work of other scholars in this special issue, we focus on how this can guide clinical work to improve the lives of clients who have experienced IPV (either as victims, offenders, or both).

British sociologist Basil Bernstein's theorisations of pedagogic practice have inspired education research at the micro-level of the classroom; however, there is some limitation so far as understanding educators' pedagogic impact on learners' text production in the early years. Specifically, this limitation concerns how educators can craft a careful mix of explicit and implicit pedagogies to stimulate modes to produce text including spoken, written language or visual images, melded with oral, visual and audio meaning making modes. This paper seeks to describe how a pedagogic mix can occur by advancing the theoretical term crossing the pedagogic midline. This paper draws on findings from design-based research in an exploratory case study of an Australian Preparatory classroom. Using a qualitative orientation, data were generated from video and audio recordings and text production artefacts by five-year-old Kyrie and six-year-old Klay. Lotteries have become the most popular form of gambling worldwide since (re-)legalization and expansion began in the 1960s and 70s. Lottery jackpots have increased significantly in national lotteries in the last twenty years, and large lottery jackpots stimulate greater ticket purchases. The discussion locates contemporary state lotteries in relation to economic structures and ideologies in which the state itself participates, while providing justification for the lottery form. The (re-)distributional and circulatory form of lotteries is theorized as in tension with (neo-)liberal economic ideology and an individualist imaginary. The analysis draws upon the work of Emile Durkheim and other classical sociologists. In particular, lotteries are treated as examples of what Durkheim termed 'institutions' and 'collective representations.' This study extends Boudon's positional theory to understand how students from different social origins make choices about university and how they interpret risks during the choice-making process in contemporary China. I draw upon empirical evidence from 71 in-depth semi-structured interviews with undergraduates from different social backgrounds and from different types of universities. The interview data confirm the relevance of Boudon's thesis in the Chinese context; that is, individuals' family characteristics manifest in the process of choices and strategies. Furthermore, this study provides new evidence on a pattern of class-bound conformity, which sometimes contradicts the rational course of action from students' narratives on socioeconomic and cultural identity as well as opportunity risks associated with the quota system. The aim of this study is twofold: first, to assess the statistical significance of the data used by Pierre Bourdieu in Distinction; second, to test the hypothesis that the volume of capital (i.e., the global amount of capital) allows for a finer discrimination of dispositional differences than the composition of capital (i.e., the respective weight of the different types of capital in the global amount of capital). To these ends, five data samples were submitted to bilateral between-proportion comparison tests. The findings (1) reveal that about two-thirds of the differences reported by P. Bourdieu are significant and (2) support the view that the volume of capital prevails over its composition. In his call for more public sociology, Michael Burawoy presents a generic framework to describe disciplinary structures in the social sciences. This model is based on a fourfold typology of knowledge which has been criticized by many. However, alternatives have fallen short of providing a convincing articulation of the social organisation and meaning of the intellectual practices the original typology was trying to describe. The debate on public sociology did not bridge differences in analytical beliefs about knowledge production and thus could not be expected to build a consensual disciplinary orientation. The current paper builds on field theory, organizational sociology, and interview data to frame the practices identified by Burawoy as social manoeuvers (i.e. ways of utilizing and legitimating knowledge) within specific social fields. In so doing, the paper provides a framework that is more flexible, more empirically adequate, and congruent with the sociology of science and the sociology of intellectuals and experts. A dialectical reading of Goffman and Freud connects the Interaction Order to the psychoanalytic conception of the self and thereby open up new possibilities of interpretation and transformation. Goffman's concept of the Interaction Order enables us to understand more clearly the Freudian concepts of superego, ego-ideal, and the introjected Father. Next, we draw out the dramaturgical approach of both Goffman and Freud in terms of performing self and performing illness and discuss how the psychoanalytic reading of Goffman's work sheds light on the formation of neuroses and the neurotic symptoms which Freud characterized as a type of performance. Here we link Freud's 'symptoms' to Goffman's modes of disordered or flawed modes of interaction, specifically hysteria connected to havoc and obsessive compulsive disorder connected to hyperritualization. This dialectical reading allows us to rethink notions of sociality and thereby opens new possibilities for constituting the relation between the self and the social. A ce point de notre analyse, nous comparons les symptomes freudiens aux modes d'interaction desordonnee et mal formee, et tout particulierement l'hysterie telle qu'elle est reliee au desordre obsessionnel et compulsif, lui-meme relie a l'hyperritualization. Cette lecture dialectique nous permet de repenser les notions de sociabilite et ouvre donc la voie a de nouvelles possibilites pour construire les rapports entre le soi et le social. The environment is increasingly seen as a meta-injustice or master frame of the politics of the new century. If this is indeed the case, environmental concerns should transcend national and organizational boundaries and should have a discursive claims-making space of their own. Research on environmental advocacy, however, shows that many claims for environmental justice are rooted in specific locales and advocacy is often mediated through, and at times overshadowed by, other dimensions of power. Using Nancy Fraser's conception of dimensions of justice, and a Bourdieusian inspired field approach, this paper maps Greenpeace and Sierra Club's press advocacy between 2006 and 2010. In doing so, the paper identifies environmental advocacy spaces and argues that non-parametric approaches to analysing ENGO media advocacy are needed to explain the complexity of multi-scaled political contexts.
