The accounting for goodwill impairment is generally covered in an intermediate or advanced accounting course; however, there is usually little or no attention paid to the valuation techniques and subjectivity of assumptions used in the measurement of the fair value of the reporting unit. In this paper, we attempt to explain the quantitative approach with a focus on the discounted cash flow (DCF) model used in determining the fair value of the reporting unit. After two score years of teaching and practicing accounting, the authors have developed a simple and effective method to handle debits and credits-- the "Cash is King" method. The model and the instructional procedures were published in 2015. This study examines the empirical results of applying the "Cash is King" method with an experimental group and comparing the mastering of the fundamentals of accounting with a control group using the conventional accrual model. Societies and institutions in the East and the West have a very long and proud tradition of education in ethics. In recent years, many grand scale embezzlements by top level government officials, infamous scandals in the business world, and other infamous unethical conducts have steered the academics, business leaders, government officials, and other authorities to re-focus their attention and place more efforts and resources on ethics education. This paper will review the relevant Eastern and Western ethics principles, thoughts and maxims.
