Abstract

The implicit discount rate (IDR) is a decisive factor in household investment decisions, and its modification could promote investment in energy-saving products. However, the discussion on households' IDR in developing countries is limited. In this regard, the current study aims to provide a detailed review of the IDR across various investment decisions, factors affecting its value, and policy instruments that can influence its value. The study finds that the IDR value tends to be considerably higher than market interest rates. Information and behavioural failures lead to a high IDR and under-investment in energy efficiency, which may be addressed through energy labels. However, the effectiveness of energy labels in addressing barriers and making energy-efficiency information visible to households depends on their visual presentation, time frame (annual or lifetime), units of measurement (physical or monetary), and the content of the information. The review has relevance for policymaking aimed at increasing the adoption of energy-efficient options that reduce household carbon footprints and, in turn, contribute towards realizing the net-zero emissions target. 7. Human iPSC-derived mesenchymal stem cells matured into valve interstitial-like cells using PEGDA hydrogels

Abstract

Despite recent advances in tissue engineered heart valves (TEHV), a major challenge is identifying a cell source for seeding TEHV scaffolds. Native heart valves are durable because valve interstitial cells (VICs) maintain tissue homeostasis by synthesizing and remodeling the extracellular matrix. In this study, the goal is to demonstrate that induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC)-derived mesenchymal stem cells (iMSCs) can be derived from iPSCs using a feeder-free protocol and then further matured into VICs by encapsulation within 3D hydrogels. The differentiation efficiency was characterized using flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry staining, and trilineage differentiation. Using our feeder-free differentiation protocol, iMSCs were differentiated from iPSCs and had CD90(+), CD44(+), CD71(+), αSMA(+), and CD45(−) expression. iMSCs underwent trilineage differentiation when cultured in induction media for 21 days. iMSCs were encapsulated in poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogels, grafted with adhesion peptide (RGDS), to promote remodeling and further maturation into VIC-like cells. VIC phenotype was assessed by the expression of alpha-smooth muscle actin (αSMA), vimentin, and the collagen production after 28 days. When MSC-derived cells were encapsulated in PEGDA hydrogels that mimic the leaflet modulus, we observed a decrease in αSMA expression and increase in vimentin. In addition, iMSCs synthesized collagen type I after 28 days in 3D hydrogel culture. Thus, the results from this study suggest that iMSCs may be a promising cell source for TEHV.

9. Accuracy of Ultrasound Determination of Estimated Fetal Weight in Small for Gestational Age Pregnancies

Abstract

Background: Approximately half of small for gestational age (SGA) cases are due to maternal or fetal pathology, and may result in significant neonatal morbidity and mortality. The estimated fetal weight (EFW) measurement is the cornerstone of ultrasonographic findings when diagnosing and managing SGA pregnancies. The objective of present study was to determine the ultrasound accuracy of EFW in SGA pregnancies and compare accuracy in appropriate for gestational age pregnancy (AGA) and SGA pregnancy. Method: In this prospective randomized observational study, fifty pregnant women at term with appropriate for gestational age pregnancy and fifty other women at term with small for gestational age pregnancy had ultrasonic estimation of fetal weight performed within a week of delivery. Results: A total of 100 cases (50 SGA and 50 AGA) were analyzed. The newborn birth weight range was 1500 gm to 3500 gm. The study found no significant difference between adjusted ultrasound EFW calculated using Hadlocks formula and actual birth weight of the neonate in both AGA and SGA pregnancies (p˃0.05). The mean absolute percent error for the entire sample was 6.6096. Mean absolute error for appropriate and small for gestational age pregnancies was 6.16889 and 7.05031 respectively, (p˃0.05). Percentage of overestimation of fetal weight was more in SGA pregnancy (65%) as compared to AGA pregnancy (54%), (p˃0.05). Conclusion : In clinically suspected SGA pregnancies ultrasound estimation of fetal weight by Hadlocks formula are a valid estimate of actual birth weight and the preferred mode of diagnosis. Accuracy of ultrasound estimation of fetal weight in SGA pregnancies is comparable to accuracy of estimation of fetal weight in AGA pregnancies.
