Since the end of 2018, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has provided stellar photometry to the astronomical community. We have used TESS data to study rotational modulation in the light curves of a sample of chemically peculiar stars with measured large-scale magnetic fields (mCP stars). In general, mCP stars show inhomogeneous distributions of elements in their atmospheres that lead to spectroscopic (line profile) and photometric (light curve) variations commensurate with the rotational period. We analyzed the available TESS data from 50 sectors for eight targets after post-processing them in order to minimize systematic instrumental trends. Analysis of the light curves allowed us to determine rotational periods for all eight of our targets. For each star, we provide a phase diagram calculated using the derived period from the light curves and from the available measurements of the disk-averaged longitudinal magnetic field $\langle B_{\rm z}\rangle$. In most cases, the phased light curve and $\langle B_{\rm z}\rangle$ measurements show consistent variability. Using our rotation periods, and global stellar parameters derived from fitting Balmer line profiles, and from Geneva and Str\"omgren-Crawford photometry, we determined the equatorial rotational velocities and calculated the respective critical rotational fractions $v_{\rm eq}/v_{\rm crit}$. We have shown from our sample that the critical rotational fraction decreases with stellar age, at a rate consistent with the magnetic braking observed in the larger population of mCP stars.

Experiments were performed at the Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology (FAST) facility to elucidate the effects of long-range wakefields (LRWs) in TESLA-type superconducting rf cavities. In particular, we investigated the higher-order modes (HOMs) generated in the eight cavities of a cryomodule (CM) due to off-axis steering with correctors located ~4 m upstream of the CM. We have observed correlated submacropulse centroid slews of a few-hundred microns and centroid oscillations at ~240 kHz in the rf BPM data after the CM. The entrance energy into the CM was 25 MeV, and the exit energy was 100 MeV with 125 pC/b and 400 pC/b in 50-bunch pulse trains. These experimental results were evaluated for machine learning training aspects which will be used to inform the commissioning plan for the Linac Coherent Light Source-II injector CM.

We present the results of a systematic search for new rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) stars using the 2-min cadence data collected by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) during its Cycle 1 observations. We identify 12 new roAp stars. Amongst these stars we discover the roAp star with the longest pulsation period, another with the shortest rotation period, and six with multiperiodic variability. In addition to these new roAp stars, we present an analysis of 44 known roAp stars observed by TESS during Cycle 1, providing the first high-precision and homogeneous sample of a significant fraction of the known roAp stars. The TESS observations have shown that almost 60 per cent (33) of our sample of stars are multiperiodic, providing excellent cases to test models of roAp pulsations, and from which the most rewarding asteroseismic results can be gleaned. We report four cases of the occurrence of rotationally split frequency multiplets that imply different mode geometries for the same degree modes in the same star. This provides a conundrum in applying the oblique pulsator model to the roAp stars. Finally, we report the discovery of non-linear mode interactions in $\alpha$ Cir (TIC 402546736, HD 128898) around the harmonic of the principal mode -- this is only the second case of such a phenomenon., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 38 Pages, 50 Figures, 1 Table, 2 Appendices

$\tau^{9}$ Eri is a Bp star that was previously reported to be a single-lined spectroscopic binary. Using 17 ESPaDOnS spectropolarimetric (Stokes $V$) observations we identified the weak spectral lines of the secondary component and detected a strong magnetic field in the primary. We performed orbital analysis of the radial velocities of both components to find a slightly eccentric orbit ($e= 0.129$) with a period of $5.95382(2)$ days. The longitudinal magnetic field ($B_\ell$) of the primary was measured from each of the Stokes $V$ profiles, with typical error bars smaller than 10 G. Equivalent widths (EWs) of LSD profiles corresponding to only the Fe lines were also measured. We performed frequency analysis of both the $B_\ell$ and EW measurements, as well as of the Hipparcos, SMEI, and TESS photometric data. All sets of photometric observations produce two clear, strong candidates for the rotation period of the Bp star: 1.21 days and 3.82 days. The $B_\ell$ and EW measurements are consistent with only the 3.82-day period. We conclude that HD 25267 consists of a late-type Bp star (M= $3.6_{-0.2}^{+0.1} M_\odot$, T= $12580_{-120}^{+150}$ K) with a rotation period of 3.82262(4) days orbiting with a period of 5.95382(2) days with a late-A/early-F type secondary companion (M= $1.6\pm 0.1 M_\odot$, T= $7530_{-510}^{+580}$ K). The Bp star's magnetic field is approximately dipolar with $i= 41\pm 2^{\circ}$, $\beta= 158\pm 5^{\circ}$ and $B_{\rm d}= 1040\pm 50$ G. HD 156424 (B2 V) is a little-studied magnetic hot star in the Sco OB4 association, previously noted to display both high-frequency radial velocity (RV) variability and magnetospheric H$\alpha$ emission. We have analysed the TESS light curve, and find that it is a $\beta$ Cep pulsator with 11 detectable frequencies, 4 of which are independent $p$-modes. The strongest frequency is also detectable in RVs from ground-based high-resolution spectroscopy. RVs also show a long-term variation, suggestive of orbital motion with a period of $\sim$years; significant differences in the frequencies determined from TESS and RV datasets are consistent with a light-time effect from orbital motion. Close examination of the star's spectrum reveals the presence of a spectroscopic companion, however as its RV is not variable it cannot be responsible for the orbital motion and we therefore infer that the system is a hierarchical triple with a so-far undetected third star. Reanalysis of LSD profiles from ESPaDOnS and HARPSpol spectropolarimetry reveals the surprising presence of a strong magnetic field in the companion star, with $\langle B_z \rangle$ about $+1.5$ kG as compared to $\langle B_z \rangle \sim -0.8$ kG for the primary. HD 156424 is thus the second hot binary with two magnetic stars. We are unable to identify a rotational period for HD 156424A. The magnetospheric H$\alpha$ emission appears to originate around HD 156424B. Using H$\alpha$, as well as other variable spectral lines, we determine a period of about 0.52 d, making HD 156424B one of the most rapidly rotating magnetic hot stars., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Rapidly rotating early-type stars with strong magnetic fields frequently show H$\alpha$ emission originating in Centrifugal Magnetospheres (CMs), circumstellar structures in which centrifugal support due to magnetically enforced corotation of the magnetically confined plasma enables it to accumulate to high densities. It is not currently known whether the CM plasma escapes via Centrifugal Breakout (CB), or by an unidentified leakage mechanism. We have conducted the first comprehensive examination of the H$\alpha$ emission properties of all stars currently known to display CM-pattern emission. We find that the onset of emission is dependent primarily on the area of the CM, which can be predicted simply by the value $B_{\rm K}$ of the magnetic field at the Kepler corotation radius $R_{\rm K}$. Emission strength is strongly sensitive to both CM area and $B_{\rm K}$. Emission onset and strength are {\em not} dependent on effective temperature, luminosity, or mass-loss rate. These results all favour a CB scenario, however the lack of intrinsic variability in any CM diagnostics indicates that CB must be an essentially continuous process, i.e.\ it effectively acts as a leakage mechanism. We also show that the emission profile shapes are approximately scale-invariant, i.e.\ they are broadly similar across a wide range of emission strengths and stellar parameters. While the radius of maximum emission correlates closely as expected to $R_{\rm K}$, it is always larger, contradicting models that predict that emission should peak at $R_{\rm K}$., Comment: 33 pages, 26 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In this paper, we present results from the spectropolarimetric follow-up of photometrically selected candidate magnetic B stars from the MOBSTER project. Out of four observed targets, one (HD 38170) is found to host a detectable surface magnetic field, with a maximum longitudinal field measurement of 105$\pm$14 G. This star is chemically peculiar and classified as an $\alpha^2$ CVn variable. Its detection validates the use of TESS to perform a photometric selection of magnetic candidates. Furthermore, upper limits on the strength of a putative dipolar magnetic field are derived for the remaining three stars, and we report the discovery of a previously unknown spectroscopic binary system, HD 25709. Since the end of 2018, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) provides high-quality space data on stellar photometry to the astronomical community. We present the results of an analysis of TESS photometric data for known slowly rotating magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) stars. In general, mCP stars show an inhomogeneous distribution of elements in their stellar atmospheres that leads to spectroscopic (line profile) and photometric (light curve) variations over the rotation period. In the frame of the oblique magnetic rotator (OMR) model, patches of enhanced chemical abundance on the stellar surface reveal the frequency of stellar rotation. Using this approach, we have compiled a list of slowly rotating mCP stars with rotation periods longer than two days from the analysis of the photometric data provided by TESS for the first eight sectors of observations. Recent BRITE-Constellation space photometry of the slowly rotating, magnetic $\beta$ Cep pulsator $\xi^1$ CMa permits a new analysis of its pulsation properties. Analysis of the two-colour BRITE data reveals the well-known single pulsation period of $0.209$ d, along with its first and second harmonics. A similar analysis of SMEI and TESS observations yields compatible results, with the higher precision TESS observations also revealing several low-amplitude modes with frequencies below 5 d$^{-1}$; some of these are likely $g$ modes. The phase lag between photometric and radial velocity maxima - equal to 0.334 cycles - is significantly larger than the typical value of $1/4$ observed in other large-amplitude $\beta$ Cep stars. The phase lag, as well as the strong dependence of phase of maximum light on wavelength, can be reconciled with seismic models only if the dominant mode is the fundamental radial mode. We employ all published photometric and radial velocity measurements, spanning over a century, to evaluate the stability of the pulsation period. The $O-C$ diagram exhibits a clear parabolic shape consistent with a mean rate of period change $\dot P=0.34\pm 0.02$ s/cen. The residuals from the best-fit parabola exhibit scatter that is substantially larger than the uncertainties. In particular, dense sampling obtained during the past $\sim$20 years suggests more complex and rapid period variations. Those data cannot be coherently phased with the mean rate of period change, and instead require $\dot P\sim0.9$ s/cen. We examine the potential contributions of binarity, stellar evolution, and stellar rotation and magnetism to understand the apparent period evolution., Comment: 14 pages, accepted by MNRAS

In this contribution, we present the MOBSTER Collaboration, a large community effort to leverage high-precision photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (\textit{TESS}) in order to characterize the variability of magnetic massive and intermediate-mass stars. These data can be used to probe the varying column density of magnetospheric plasma along the line of sight for OB stars, thus improving our understanding of the interaction between surface magnetic fields and massive star winds. They can also be used to map out the brightness inhomogeneities present on the surfaces of Ap/Bp stars, informing present models of atomic diffusion in their atmospheres. It was recently claimed that the magnetic O-type star HD 54879 exhibits important radial velocity variability indicative of its presence in a spectroscopic binary. More remarkably, it was furthermore reported that the star underwent a short, sudden variation in spectral type and magnetic field. In this Letter we examine new Narval and ESPaDOnS data of this star in addition to the previously-published FORS2 data and conclude that both the reported velocity variations and the sudden spectral and magnetic changes are spurious., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS 2019 November 15. The new photometric data on pulsating Ap star HD~27463 obtained recently with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (\textit{TESS}) are analysed to search for variability. Our analysis shows that HD~27463 exhibits two types of photometric variability. The low frequency variability with the period $P$ =~2.834274 $\pm$ 0.000008 d can be explained in terms of axial stellar rotation assuming the oblique magnetic rotator model and presence of surface abundance/brightness spots, while the detected high-frequency variations are characteristics of $\delta$~Scuti pulsations. From the analysis of Balmer line profiles visible in two FEROS spectra of HD~27463 we have derived its effective temperature and surface gravity, finding values that are close to those published for this star in the \textit{TESS} Input Catalogue (TIC). Knowing the rotation period and the v$\sin{i}$ value estimated from the fitting of Balmer line profiles we found that the rotational axis is inclined to the line of sight with an angle of $i=33\pm8\deg$. Our best-fitting model of the observed pulsation modes results in an overshoot parameter value $f_{ov} = 0.014$ and values of global stellar parameters that are in good agreement with the data reported in the TIC and with the data derived from fitting Balmer line profiles. This model indicates an age of 5.0 $\pm$~0.4 $\times 10^8$~yrs, which corresponds to a core hydrogen fraction of 0.33., Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures

Recently, high-precision optical 2~min cadence light curves obtained with \emph{TESS} for targets located in the mission's defined first four sectors have been released. The majority of these high-cadence and high-precision measurements currently span $\sim28\,{\rm d}$, thereby allowing periodic variability occurring on timescales $\lesssim14\,{\rm d}$ to potentially be detected. Magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) A-type stars are well known to exhibit rotationally modulated photometric variability that is produced by inhomogeneous chemical abundance distributions in their atmospheres. While mCP stars typically exhibit rotation periods that are significantly longer than those of non-mCP stars, both populations exhibit typical periods $\lesssim10\,{\rm d}$; therefore, the early \emph{TESS} releases are suitable for searching for rotational modulation of the light curves of both mCP and non-mCP stars. We present the results of our search for A-type stars that exhibit variability in their \emph{TESS} light curves that is consistent with rotational modulation based on the first two data releases obtained from sectors 1 to 4. Our search yielded $134$ high-probability candidate rotational variables -- $60$ of which have not been previously reported. Approximately half of these stars are identified in the literature as Ap (mCP) stars. Comparisons between the subsample of high-probability candidate rotationally variable Ap stars and the subsample of stars that are not identified as Ap reveal that the latter subsample exhibits statistically (i) shorter rotation periods and (ii) significantly lower photometric amplitudes., Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables. In this paper we introduce the MOBSTER collaboration and lay out its scientific goals. We present first results based on the analysis of nineteen previously known magnetic O, B and A stars observed in 2-minute cadence in sectors 1 and 2 of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission. We derive precise rotational periods from the newly obtained light curves and compare them to previously published values. We also discuss the overall photometric phenomenology of the known magnetic massive and intermediate-mass stars and propose an observational strategy to augment this population by taking advantage of the high-quality observations produced by TESS., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication by MNRAS (2019 April 22)

Various surveys focusing on the magnetic properties of intermediate-mass main sequence (MS) stars have been previously carried out. One particularly puzzling outcome of these surveys is the identification of a dichotomy between the strong ($\gtrsim100\,{\rm G}$), organized fields hosted by magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) stars and the ultra-weak ($\lesssim1\,{\rm G}$) fields associated with a small number of non-mCP MS stars. Despite attempts to detect intermediate strength fields (i.e. those with strengths $\gtrsim10\,{\rm G}$ and $\lesssim100\,{\rm G}$), remarkably few examples have been found. Whether this so-called "magnetic desert", separating the stars hosting ultra-weak fields from the mCP stars truly exists has not been definitively answered. In 2007, a volume-limited spectropolarimetric survey of mCP stars using the MuSiCoS spectropolarimeter was initiated to test the existence of the magnetic desert by attempting to reduce the biases inherent in previous surveys. Since then, we have obtained a large number of ESPaDOnS and NARVAL Stokes $V$ measurements allowing this survey to be completed. Here we present the results of our homogeneous analysis of the rotational periods (inferred from photometric and magnetic variability) and magnetic properties (dipole field strengths and obliquity angles) of the 52 confirmed mCP stars located within a heliocentric distance of $100\,{\rm pc}$. No mCP stars exhibiting field strengths $\lesssim300\,{\rm G}$ are found within the sample, which is consistent with the notion that the magnetic desert is a real property and not the result of an observational bias. We present the first results of a volume-limited survey of main sequence (MS) magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) stars. The sample consists of all identified intermediate-mass MS stars (mCP and non-mCP) within a heliocentric distance of $100\,{\rm pc}$ as determined using Hipparcos parallaxes. The two populations are compared in order to determine the unique properties that allow a small fraction of MS stars with masses $\gtrsim1.4\,M_\odot$ to host strong, large scale magnetic fields. A total of 52 confirmed mCP stars are identified using published magnetic, spectroscopic, and photometric observations along with archived and newly obtained spectropolarimetric (Stokes $V$) observations. We derive the fundamental parameters (effective temperatures, luminosities, masses, and evolutionary states) of the mCP and non-mCP populations using homogeneous analyses. A detailed analysis of the mCP stars is performed using the {\sc llmodels} code, which allows observed spectral energy distributions to be modeled while incorporating chemical peculiarities and magnetic fields. The surface gravities and mean chemical abundances are derived by modelling averaged spectra using the {\sc gssp} and {\sc zeeman} spectral synthesis codes. Masses and stellar ages are derived using modern, densely calculated evolutionary model grids. We confirm a number of previously reported evolutionary properties associated with mCP stars including a conspicuously high incidence of middle-aged MS stars with respect to the non-mCP subsample; the incidence of mCP stars is found to sharply increase with mass from $0.3$~per~cent at $1.5\,M_\odot$ to $\approx11$~per~cent at $3.8\,M_\odot$. After operating as a High Energy Physics electron-positron collider, the Cornell Electron-positron Storage Ring (CESR) has been converted to become a dedicated synchrotron light source for the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS). Over the course of several years CESR was adapted for accelerator physics research as a test accelerator, capable of studying topics relevant to future damping rings, colliders and light sources. Initially some specific topics were targeted for accelerator physic research with the storage ring in this mode, labeled CesrTA. These topics included 1) tuning techniques to produce low emittance beams, 2) the study of electron cloud (EC) development in a storage ring and 3) intra-beam scattering effects. The complete conversion of CESR to CesrTA occurred over a several year period, described elsewhere. A number of specific instruments were developed for CesrTA. Much of the pre-existing instrumentation was modified to accommodate the scope of these studies and these are described in a companion paper. To complete this research, a number of procedures were developed or modified, often requiring coordinated measurements among different instruments. This paper provides an overview of types of measurements employed for the study of beam dynamics during the operation of CesrTA.

The rotational and magnetic properties of many magnetic hot stars are poorly characterized, therefore the MiMeS and BinaMIcS collaborations have collected extensive high-dispersion spectropolarimetric datasets of these targets. We present longitudinal magnetic field measurements $\langle B_{\rm z}\rangle$ for 52 early B-type stars (B5 to B0), with which we attempt to determine their rotational periods $P_{\rm rot}$. Supplemented with high-resolution spectroscopy, low-resolution DAO circular spectropolarimetry, and archival Hipparcos photometry, we determined $P_{\rm rot}$ for 10 stars, leaving only 5 stars for which $P_{\rm rot}$ could not be determined. Rotational ephemerides for 14 stars were refined via comparison of new to historical magnetic measurements. The distribution of $P_{\rm rot}$ is very similar to that observed for the cooler Ap/Bp stars. We also measured $v\sin{i}$ and $v_{\rm mac}$ for all stars. Comparison to non-magnetic stars shows that $v\sin{i}$ is much lower for magnetic stars, an expected consequence of magnetic braking. We also find evidence that $v_{\rm mac}$ is lower for magnetic stars. LSD profiles extracted using single-element masks revealed widespread, systematic discrepancies in $\langle B_{\rm z}\rangle$ between different elements: this effect is apparent only for chemically peculiar stars, suggesting it is a consequence of chemical spots. Sinusoidal fits to H line $\langle B_{\rm z}\rangle$ measurements (which should be minimally affected by chemical spots), yielded evidence of surface magnetic fields more complex than simple dipoles in 6 stars for which this has not previously been reported; however, in all 6 cases the second- and third-order amplitudes are small relative to the first-order (dipolar) amplitudes., Comment: 38 pages, 47 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Cornell Electron-positron Storage Ring (CESR) has been converted from a High Energy Physics electron-positron collider to operate as a dedicated synchrotron light source for the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS) and to conduct accelerator physics research as a test accelerator, capable of studying topics relevant to future damping rings, colliders and light sources. Some of the specific topics that were targeted for the initial phase of operation of the storage ring in this mode for CESR as a Test Accelerator (CesrTA) included 1) tuning techniques to produce low emittance beams, 2) the study of electron cloud development in a storage ring and 3) intra-beam scattering effects. The complete conversion of CESR to CesrTA occurred over a several year period, described elsewhere. In addition to instrumentation for the storage ring, which was created for CesrTA, existing instrumentation was modified to facilitate the entire range of investigations to support these studies. Procedures were developed, often requiring coordinated measurements among different instruments. This paper describes the instruments utilized for the study of beam dynamics during the operation of CesrTA. The treatment of these instruments will remain fairly general in this paper as it focusses on an overview of the instruments themselves. Their interaction and inter-relationships during sequences of observations is found in a companion paper describing the associated measurement techniques. More detailed descriptions and detailed operational performance for some of the instrumentation may be found elsewhere and these will be referenced in the related sections of this paper.

$\rho$ Pup is a $\delta$ Scuti F2 pulsator, known to host a main radial mode as well as non-radial pulsations, with chemical peculiarities typical of evolved Am stars. We present high-precision spectropolarimetric observations of this star, obtained with ESPaDOnS at the Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) in the frame of the BRITE spectropolarimetric survey. A magnetic field is clearly detected in $\rho$ Pup, with a longitudinal field strength below 1 G. This makes $\rho$ Pup the second known magnetic $\delta$ Scuti discovered, after HD 188774, and a possible cool evolved counterpart of the recently discovered ultra-weakly magnetic Am family., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted in MNRAS Letters

Magnetic B-type stars exhibit photometric variability due to diverse causes, and consequently on a variety of timescales. We employ high resolution spectroscopy and spectropolarimetry to derive the physical properties and magnetic characteristics of the multiple system HD 164492C, located in the young open cluster M20. The spectrum reveals evidence of 3 components: a broad-lined early B star (HD 164492C1), a narrow-lined early B star (HD 164492C2), and a late B star (HD 164492C3). Components C2 and C3 exhibit significant ($>100$ km/s) bulk radial velocity variations with a period of $12.5351(7)$ d that we attribute to eccentric binary motion around a common centre-of-mass. Component C1 exhibits no detectable radial velocity variations. Using constraints derived from modeling the orbit of the C2+C3 binary and from synthesis of the combined spectrum, we determine the approximate physical characteristics of the components. We conclude that a coherent evolutionary solution consistent with the published age of M20 implies a distance to the system of $0.9\pm 0.2$ kpc, corresponding to the smallest published values. We confirm the detection of a strong magnetic field in the combined spectrum. The field is clearly associated with the broad-lined C1 component of the system. Repeated measurement of the longitudinal magnetic field allows the derivation of the rotation period of the magnetic star, $P_{\rm rot}=1.36986(6)$ d. We derive the star's magnetic geometry, finding $i=63\pm 6$ deg, $\beta=33\pm 6$ deg and a dipole polar strength $B_{\rm d}=7.9^{+1.2}_{-1.0}$ kG. Strong emission - varying according to the magnetic period - is detected in the H$\alpha$ profile. Cornell's electron/positron storage ring (CESR) was modified over a series of accelerator shutdowns beginning in May 2008, which substantially improves its capability for research and development for particle accelerators. CESR's energy span from 1.8 to 5.6 GeV with both electrons and positrons makes it ideal for the study of a wide spectrum of accelerator physics issues and instrumentation related to present light sources and future lepton damping rings. Additionally a number of these are also relevant for the beam physics of proton accelerators. This paper is the third in a series of four describing the the conversion of CESR to the test accelerator, CesrTA. The first two papers discuss the overall plan for the conversion of the storage ring to an instrument capable of studying advanced accelerator physics issues and the details of the vacuum system upgrades. This paper focusses on the necessary development of new instrumentation, situated in four dedicated experimental regions, capable of studying such phenomena as electron clouds (ECs) and methods to mitigate EC effects. The fourth paper in this series describes the vacuum system modifications of the superconducting wigglers to accommodate the diagnostic instrumentation for the study of EC behavior within wigglers. While the initial studies of CesrTA focussed on questions related to the International Linear Collider damping ring design, CesrTA is a very versatile storage ring, capable of studying a wide range of accelerator physics and instrumentation questions., Comment: 36 pages and 38 figures

We analyze a high resolution spectropolarimetric dataset collected for the He-weak B3p IV star HR 2949. The Zeeman effect is visible in the circularly polarized component of numerous spectral lines. The longitudinal magnetic field varies between approximately $-650$ and $+150$ G. The polar strength of the surface magnetic dipole is calculated to be 2.4$^{+0.3}_{-0.2}$ kG. The star has strong overabundances of Fe-peak elements, along with extremely strong overabundances of rare-earth elements; however, He, Al, and S are underabundant. This implies that HR 2949 is a chemically peculiar star. Variability is seen in all photospheric lines, likely due to abundance patches as seen in many Ap/Bp stars. Longitudinal magnetic field variations measured from different spectral lines yield different results, likely a consequence of uneven sampling of the photospheric magnetic field by the abundance patches. Analysis of photometric and spectroscopic data for both HR 2949 and its companion star, HR 2948, suggests a revision of HR 2949's fundamental parameters: in particular, it is somewhat larger, hotter, and more luminous than previously believed. There is no evidence of optical or ultraviolet emission originating in HR 2949's magnetosphere, despite its moderately strong magnetic field and relatively rapid rotation; however, when calculated using theoretical and empirical boundaries on the initial rotational velocity, the spindown age is compatible with the stellar age.
