This study aimed to estimate the genetic parameters of growth-related traits (weight and length), morphological traits (cephalothorax, abdomen, length, height, segment width and volume), and the correlated response of weight traits via the selection for morphological traits to evaluate the relative efficiency of indirect selection in P. vannamei from a selective breeding growth programme, PMG-BIOGEMAR®, under industrial production conditions in Ecuador. A total of 595 shrimps from 89 full-sibling families were reared under an extensive culturing system (estuaries) (PRODUMAR, Duran, Ecuador), and were evaluated for genetic parameters at harvest size. The heritability of growth traits was moderate-medium (0.25–0.34), whereas it was quite variable for morphological traits (0.01–0.77). Among the morphological traits, Sixth Segment Width (SW6) (0.77) and Sixth Segment Volume (SV6) (0.35) had medium-high heritability, and genetic correlations between almost all morphological and growth traits were high and positive, except those corresponding to the fourth segment. According to these genetic parameters, SW6 and SV6 as the correlated response to weight are 9.7% and 5.8%, respectively, being more efficient than direct selection for weight. Thus, the sixth segment should be considered an indirect selection criterion for growth in future breeding programmes as it is a precise, non-invasive, and low-cost morphological trait for growth improvement in the industrial sector.

Fish egg quality is strongly related with the ability of the egg to be fertilized and develop a normal embryo with good survival and a lack of abnormalities. Large variations in the spawning quantity or quality impact directly in the competitiveness and sustainability of hatcheries, which create an overly large broodstock in order to satisfy the on-growing companies’ demand for undeformed fry. The present study reports, for the first time in relation to gilthead seabream, the effect of the genetic background of breeders for presence or absence of deformity on their spawning quality and the importance of considering this when creating broodstock. The spawning quality of crosses of breeders with genetic background for presence or absence of deformity (EBVdef), were evaluated during a whole spawning season, through study of the following traits: oocyte yield, fertilization rate, viability rate, hatching rate, larval survival rate, fertilized eggs, viable eggs, hatched eggs, and number of alive larvae. Breeders with a genetic background for deformity and a normal phenotype had shorter spawning periods, lower oocyte yield and, consequently, produced a lower number of alive larvae. In these two traits, the genetic background of breeders was of greater importance during intermediate spawning periods, when spawning is generally considered optimal for the industry, while environmental factors were more important at the beginning and end of the spawning season. In conclusion, these results demonstrate the importance of controlling the breeders’ genetics when creating broodstock.

In this study, a total of 18 novel productive traits, three related to carcass [cNiT] and fifteen related to morphometric [mNiT]), were measured in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) using Non-invasive Technologies (NiT) as implemented in IMAFISH_ML (MatLab script). Their potential to be used in industrial breeding programs were evaluated in 2348 offspring reared under different production systems (estuarine ponds, oceanic cage, inland tank) at harvest. All animals were photographed, and digitally measured and main genetic parameters were estimated. Heritability for growth traits was medium (0.25–0.37) whereas for NiT traits medium-high (0.24–0.61). In general, genetic correlations between mNiT, cNiT and growth and traits were high and positive. Image analysis artifacts such as fin unfold or shades, that may interfere in the precision of some digital measurements, were discarded as a major bias factor since heritability of NiT traits after correcting them were no significantly different from original ones. Indirect selection of growth traits through NiT traits produced a better predicted response than directly measuring Body Weight (13–23%), demonstrating that this methodological approach is highly cost-effective in terms of accuracy and data processing time.

Farmed gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) is able to grow efficiently with new feed formulations based on plant ingredients. Here, two experimental diets with standard and high inclusion levels of plant ingredients were formulated to assess the suited use of plant-based diets in fish with different growth genetic backgrounds. To pursue this issue, a long-term feeding trial (12-months) was conducted with fish (17 g initial body weight) of 16 families coming from the broodstock of PROGENSA project, that were grown communally in the IATS-CSIC experimental facilities. All fish in the study (2545) were PIT-tagged, and their pedigree was re-constructed with 96% success by using a SMsa1 multiplex of 11 microsatellites, which revealed the main parents contributions of 5 females and 6 males. Each diet was randomly assigned to replicate 3000 L tanks, gathering each replicate a similar family composition through all the feeding trial. Data on growth performance highlighted a strong ge- netic effect on growth trajectories, associated with enhanced growth during winter in fish selected for faster growth. No main dietary effects were found on growth rates or condition factor, and regression-correlation analyses of growth rates across families on both diets suggest that genome by diet interaction was weak, while genetic variation accounted for most of the growth phenotypic variation. Hepatosomatic index (HSI) and me- senteric fat index (MSI) of five families, covering the growth variability of the population, were regulated nu- tritionally and genetically, but without statistically significant genome by diet interactions. Fish from faster growing families showed shorter intestines after being fed the control diet, but this phenotype was masked by the enriched plant-based diet. Collectively, the results demonstrate that selection for faster growth is associated in gilthead sea bream with different growth trajectories and a high diet flexibility and intestine plasticity.

This project promotes technology developments for gilthead sea bream industrial sector of Spain, to facilitate and normalize the implementation of genetic selection schemes in this species, by defining new technological traits of commercial interest, with new standardized and extensible technological developments that permit, in an economical manner, normalized measuring methods, to study genetic parameters (growth, morphology, carcass and resistance disease), genotype-environment interaction to extend the Spanish production, and guarantee the production levels to the whole production chain. At the same time, improving the breeders management under industrial conditions, the validation of feeding efficiency during the selection processes and location of biomarkers linked and applied in genomic selection, Con la presente propuesta se pretende desarrollar metodología transferible al sector industrial de dorada en España que facilite y normalice la implementación de esquemas de selección genética en esta especie, mediante la definición de caracteres de interés comercial con nuevos desarrollos tecnológicos que estandaricen y hagan extensible a todo el sector, de manera económica, la medición de caracteres a escala industrial, el estudio de parámetros genéticos para caracteres de interés comercial (crecimiento, morfología, rendimiento y resistencia a enfermedades) en stocks de reproductores de la industria española, la estimación de la interacción genotipo-ambiente para permitir de manera garante la expansión de los rendimientos productivos de la industria Española, la gestión de reproductores bajo los propios condicionantes de la industria, así como la validación de la eficiencia alimenticia de los procesos de selección y búsqueda de biomarcadores asociados y aplicables en los modelos de selección.
