Search

JWST, despite not being designed to observe astrophysical phenomena that vary on rapid time scales, can be an unparalleled tool for such studies. If timing systematics can be controlled, JWST will be able to open up the sub-second infrared timescale regime. Rapid time-domain studies, such as lag measurements in accreting compact objects and Solar System stellar occultations, require both precise inter-frame timing and knowing when a time series begins to an absolute accuracy significantly below 1s. In this work we present two long-duration observations of the deeply eclipsing double white dwarf system ZTF J153932.16+502738.8, which we use as a natural timing calibrator to measure the absolute timing accuracy of JWST's clock. From our two epochs, we measure an average clock accuracy of $0.12\pm0.06$s, implying that JWST can be used for sub-second time-resolution studies down to the $\sim100$ms level, a factor $\sim5$ improvement upon the pre-launch clock accuracy requirement. We present the first X-ray polarization measurements of GX 339-4. IXPE observed this source twice during its 2023-2024 outburst, once in the soft-intermediate state and again during a soft state. The observation taken during the intermediate state shows significant ($4\sigma$) polarization degree P = $1.3\% \pm 0.3\%$ and polarization angle $\theta$ = -74\degree $\pm$ 7\degree only in the 3 - 8 keV band. FORS2 at VLT observed the source simultaneously detecting optical polarization in the B, V, R, I bands (between $0.1%$ and $0.7\%$), all roughly aligned with the X-ray polarization. We also detect a discrete jet knot from radio observations taken later in time; this knot would have been ejected from the system around the same time as the hard-to-soft X-ray state transition and a bright radio flare occurred $\sim$3 months earlier. The proper motion of the jet knot provides a direct measurement of the jet orientation angle on the plane of the sky at the time of the ejection. We find that both the X-ray and optical polarization angles are aligned with the direction of the ballistic jet., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

We present mid-infrared (MIR) spectral-timing measurements of the prototypical Galactic microquasar GRS 1915+105. The source was observed with the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) onboard JWST in June 2023 at a MIR luminosity L(MIR)~10^{36} erg/s exceeding past IR levels by about a factor of 10. By contrast, the X-ray flux is much fainter than the historical average, in the source's now-persistent 'obscured' state. The MIRI low-resolution spectrum shows a plethora of emission lines, the strongest of which are consistent with recombination in the hydrogen Pfund (Pf) series and higher. Low amplitude (~1%) but highly significant peak-to-peak photometric variability is found on timescales of ~1,000 s. The brightest Pf(6-5) emission line lags the continuum. Though difficult to constrain accurately, this lag is commensurate with light-travel timescales across the outer accretion disc or with expected recombination timescales inferred from emission line diagnostics. Using the emission line as a bolometric indicator suggests a moderate (~5-30% Eddington) intrinsic accretion rate. Multiwavelength monitoring shows that JWST caught the source close in-time to unprecedentedly bright MIR and radio long-term flaring. Assuming a thermal bremsstrahlung origin for the MIRI continuum suggests an unsustainably high mass-loss rate during this time unless the wind remains bound, though other possible origins cannot be ruled out. PAH features previously detected with Spitzer are now less clear in the MIRI data, arguing for possible destruction of dust in the interim. IGR J18434-0508 is a Galactic Intermediate Polar (IP) type Cataclysmic Variable (CV) previously classified through optical spectroscopy. The source is already known to have a hard Chandra spectrum. In this paper, we have used follow-up XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations to measure the white dwarf (WD) mass and spin period. We measure a spin period of P = 304.4 +/- 0.3 s based on the combined MOS1, MOS2, and pn light curve. Although this is twice the optical period found previously, we interpret this value to be the true spin period of the WD. The source has an 8 +/- 2% pulsed fraction in the 0.5-10 keV XMM-Newton data and shows strong dips in the soft energy band (0.5-2 keV). The XMM-Newton and NuSTAR joint spectrum is consistent with a thermal bremsstrahlung continuum model with an additional partial covering factor, reflection, and Fe line Gaussian components. Furthermore, we fit the joint spectrum with the post-shock region "ipolar" model which indicates a high WD mass $>$ $\sim$ 1.36 Msun, approaching the Chandrasekhar limit., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Accreting neutron stars (NSs) represent a unique laboratory for probing the physics of accretion in the presence of strong magnetic fields ($B\gtrsim 10^8$ G). Additionally, the matter inside the NS itself exists in an ultra-dense, cold state that cannot be reproduced in Earth-based laboratories. Hence, observational studies of these objects are a way to probe the most extreme physical regimes. Here we present an overview of the field and discuss the most important outstanding problems related to NS accretion. We show how these open questions regarding accreting NSs in both low-mass and high-mass X-ray binary systems can be addressed with the High-Energy X-ray Probe (HEX-P) via simulated data. In particular, with the broad X-ray passband and improved sensitivity afforded by a low X-ray background, HEX-P will be able to 1) distinguish between competing continuum emission models; 2) provide tighter upper limits on NS radii via reflection modeling techniques that are independent and complementary to other existing methods; 3) constrain magnetic field geometry, plasma parameters, and accretion column emission patterns by characterizing fundamental and harmonic cyclotron lines and exploring their behavior with pulse phase; 4) directly measure the surface magnetic field strength of highly magnetized NSs at the lowest accretion luminosities; as well as 5) detect cyclotron line features in extragalactic sources and probe their dependence on luminosity in the super-Eddington regime in order to distinguish between geometrical evolution and accretion-induced decay of the magnetic field. The recurring transient outbursts in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) provide ideal laboratories to study the accretion process. Unlike their supermassive relatives, LMXBs are far too small and distant to be imaged directly. Fortunately, phase-resolved spectroscopy can provide an alternative diagnostic to study their highly complex, time-dependent accretion discs. The primary spectral signature of LMXBs are strong, disc-formed emission lines detected at optical wavelengths. The shape, profile, and appearance/disappearance of these lines change throughout a binary orbit, and thus, can be used to trace how matter in these discs behaves and evolves over time. By combining a \textit{Swift} multi-wavelength monitoring campaign, phase-resolved spectroscopy from the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) and Liverpool Telescope, and modern astrotomography techniques, we find a clear empirical connection between the line emitting regions and physical properties of the X-rays heating the disc in the black hole LMXB MAXI J1820+070 during its 2018 outburst. In this paper, we show how these empirical correlations can be used as an effective observational tool for understanding the geometry and structure of a LMXB accretion disc and present further evidence for an irradiation-driven warped accretion disc present in this system., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the first joint NuSTAR and NICER observations of the ultra-compact X-ray binary (UCXB) 4U 0614+091. This source shows quasi-periodic flux variations on the timescale of ~days. We use reflection modeling techniques to study various components of the accretion system as the flux varies. We find that the flux of the reflected emission and the thermal components representing the disk and the compact object trend closely with the overall flux. However, the flux of the power-law component representing the illuminating X-ray corona scales in the opposite direction, increasing as the total flux decreases. During the lowest flux observation, we see evidence of accretion disk truncation from roughly 6 gravitational radii to 11.5 gravitational radii. This is potentially analogous to the truncation seen in black hole low-mass X-ray binaries, which tends to occur during the low/hard state at sufficiently low Eddington ratios., Comment: 14 Pages, 6 Figures, 6 Tables, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present MAXI and NuSTAR observations of the Be X-ray binary, MAXI J0655-013, in outburst. NuSTAR observed the source once early in the outburst, when spectral analysis yields a bolometric (0.1--100 keV), unabsorbed source luminosity of $L_{\mathrm{bol}}=5.6\times10^{36}\mathrm{erg\,s^{-1}}$, and a second time 54 days later, by which time the luminosity dropped to $L_{\mathrm{bol}}=4\times10^{34}\,\mathrm{erg\,s^{-1}}$ after first undergoing a dramatic increase. Timing analysis of the NuSTAR data reveals a neutron star spin period of $1129.09\pm0.04$ s during the first observation, which decreased to $1085\pm1$ s by the time of the second observation, indicating spin-up due to accretion throughout the outburst. Furthermore, during the first NuSTAR observation, we observed quasiperiodic oscillations with centroid frequency $\nu_0=89\pm1$ mHz, which exhibited a second harmonic feature. By combining the MAXI and NuSTAR data with pulse period measurements reported by Fermi/GBM, we are able to show that apparent flaring behavior in the MAXI light-curve is an artifact introduced by uneven sampling of the pulse profile, which has a large pulsed fraction. Finally, we estimate the magnetic field strength at the neutron star surface via three independent methods, invoking a tentative cyclotron resonance scattering feature at $44$ keV, QPO production at the inner edge of the accretion disk, and spin-up via interaction of the neutron star magnetic field with accreting material. Each of these result in a significantly different value. We discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each method and infer that MAXI J0655-013 is likely to have a high surface magnetic field strength, $B_{s}>10^{13}$ G., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figure, 4 tables; accepted for publication in ApJ

Cataclysmic variables (CVs) are binary systems consisting of a white dwarf (WD) accreting matter from a companion star. Observations of CVs provide an opportunity to learn about accretion disks, the physics of compact objects, classical novae, and the evolution of the binary and the WD that may ultimately end in a type Ia supernova (SN). As type Ia SNe involve a WD reaching the Chandrasekhar limit or merging WDs, WD mass measurements are particularly important for elucidating the path from CV to type Ia SN. For intermediate polar (IP) type CVs, the WD mass is related to the bremsstrahlung temperature of material in the accretion column, which typically peaks at X-ray energies. Thus, the IPs with the strongest hard X-ray emission, such as those discovered by the INTEGRAL satellite, are expected to have the highest masses. Here, we report on XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and optical observations of IGR J15038-6021. We find an X-ray periodicity of 1678+/-2s, which we interpret as the WD spin period. From fitting the 0.3-79 keV spectrum with a model that uses the relationship between the WD mass and the post-shock temperature, we measure a WD mass of 1.36+0.04-0.11 Msun. This follows an earlier study of IGR J14091-6108, which also has a WD with a mass approaching the Chandrasekhar limit. We demonstrate that these are both outliers among IPs in having massive WDs and discuss the results in the context of WD mass studies as well as the implications for WD mass evolution., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The transient black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1803-298 was discovered on 2021 May 1, as it went into outburst from a quiescent state. As the source rose in flux it showed periodic absorption dips and fit the timing and spectral characteristics of a hard state accreting black hole. We report on the results of a Target-of-Opportunity observation with NuSTAR obtained near the peak outburst flux beginning on 2021 May 13, after the source had transitioned into an intermediate state. MAXI J1803-298 is variable across the observation, which we investigate by extracting spectral and timing products separately for different levels of flux throughout the observation. Our timing analysis reveals two distinct potential QPOs which are not harmonically related at 5.4+/-0.2 Hz and 9.4+/-0.3 Hz, present only during periods of lower flux. With clear relativistic reflection signatures detected in the source spectrum, we applied several different reflection models to the spectra of MAXI J1803-298. Here we report our results, utilizing high density reflection models to constrain the disk geometry, and assess changes in the spectrum dependent on the source flux. With a standard broken power-law emissivity, we find a near-maximal spin for the black hole, and we are able to constrain the inclination of the accretion disk at 75+/-2 degrees, which is expected for a source that has shown periodic absorption dips. We also significantly detect a narrow absorption feature at 6.91+/-0.06 keV with an equivalent width between 4 and 9 eV, which we interpret as the signature of a disk wind., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication (ApJ)

In this chapter we consider the processes which can lead to X-ray emission from different types of cataclysmic variable stars (CVs). CVs are semi-detached, binary star systems where material is transferred from the donor star (also known as the companion or secondary star) onto the white dwarf primary. CVs are divided into several sub-classes based on the observed phenomenology in the optical and X-ray bands, which, in turn, is largely defined by the magnetic field strength of the accretor. In non-magnetic systems, a variety of observed behaviours are identified, depending on the accretion rate: novae, dwarf novae, nova-like variables, symbiotic binaries and supersoft sources are all examples of non-magnetic CVs. In magnetic systems (polars and intermediate polars, or AM Her and DQ Her systems, respectively), the accretion flow is channelled to polar regions, and the observational appearance is different. X-rays are typically produced through hot or energetic processes, and in CVs they are formed via shocks (within a boundary layer or accretion column, or through interactions either internal to the nova ejecta, or between the ejecta and a stellar wind) or from hydrogen burning (either steady fusion, or a thermonuclear runaway). We observed the Galactic black hole X-ray binary V4641 Sgr with the high resolution transmission gratings on Chandra during the source's 2020 outburst. Over two epochs of Chandra gratings observations, we see numerous highly ionized metal lines, superimposed on a hot, disc-dominated X-ray continuum. The measured inner disc temperatures and luminosities imply an unfeasibly small inner disc radius, such that we suggest that the central engine of V4641 Sgr is obscured, and we are viewing scattered X-rays. We find that the emission lines in the Chandra spectra cannot be constrained by a single photoionized model, instead finding that two separate photoionized model components are required, one to reproduce the iron lines and a second for the other metals. We compare the observed X-ray spectra of V4641 Sgr to optical studies during previous outbursts of the source, suggesting that the lines originate in an accretion disc wind, potentially with a spherical geometry., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Some intermediate polars show outbursts that are much shorter than those observed in normal dwarf novae, and whose origin has remained unelucidated for a long time. We examine here the case of V1223 Sgr, an intermediate polar that showed a short outburst in 1984, and compare the outburst characteristics with the predictions of the magnetospheric gating model. We use the archival data from the AAVSO from which we extract the outburst profiles. We use our code for computing the time-dependent evolution of an accretion disc truncated by the white dwarf magnetic field, using a simple description of the interaction between the disc and the magnetic field, as in D'Antona and Spruit (2010). We find that V1223 Sgr underwent a series of short outbursts, with a rise lasting for typically two to three hours, and a slightly longer decay. When applied to intermediate polars, the model by D'Antona and Spruit (2010) accounts well for the observed outburst duration and intensity. We confirm, however, that the model outcome depends sensitively on the rather poorly constrained model's assumptions. We have also searched the AAVSO database for short outbursts in other IPs, identifying individual short outbursts in FO Aqr, TV Col, NY Lup and EI UMa, but no series as those observed in V1223 Sgr. We also found a superoutburst, followed by a reflare in CTCV J2056-3014. Although the magnetic-gating accretion instability model is clearly responsible for the series of V1223 Sgr short outbursts and most probably for similar events in other intermediate polars, the model describing this process needs improving, in particular concerning the interaction of the white-dwarf's magnetic field with the accretion disc. We present the Transiting Exoplanet Surveying Satellite (TESS) light curve of the intermediate polar YY Draconis (YY Dra, also known as DO Dra). The power spectrum indicates that while there is stream-fed accretion for most of the observational period, there is a day-long, flat-bottomed low state at the beginning of 2020 during which the only periodic signal is ellipsoidal variation and there is no appreciable flickering. We interpret this low state to be a complete cessation of accretion, a phenomenon that has been observed only once before in an intermediate polar. Simultaneous ground-based observations of this faint state establish that when accretion is negligible, YY Dra fades to $g=17.37\pm0.12$, which we infer to be the magnitude of the combined photospheric contributions of the white dwarf and its red dwarf companion. Using survey photometry, we identify additional low states in 2018-2019 during which YY Dra repeatedly fades to -- but never below -- this threshold. This implies relatively frequent cessations in accretion. Spectroscopic observations during future episodes of negligible accretion can be used to directly measure the field strength of the white dwarf by Zeeman splitting. We present optical photometry of six intermediate polars that exhibit transitions to a low-flux state. For four of these systems, DW Cnc, V515 And, V1223 Sgr and RX J2133.7+5107, we are able to perform timing analysis in and out of the low states. We find that, for DW Cnc and V515 And, the dominant periodicities in the light curves change as the flux decreases, indicating a change in the sources' accretion properties as they transition to the low state. For V1223 Sgr we find that the variability is almost completely quenched at the lowest flux, but do not find evidence for a changing accretion geometry. For RX J2133.7+5107, the temporal properties do not change in the low state, but we do see a period of enhanced accretion that is coincident with increased variability on the beat frequency, which we do not associate with a change in the accretion mechanisms in the system., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ. Many new and unidentified Galactic sources have recently been revealed by ongoing hard X-ray surveys. A significant fraction of these have been shown to be the type of accreting white dwarfs known as cataclysmic variables (CVs). Follow-up observations are often required to categorize and classify these sources, and may also identify potentially unique or interesting cases. One such case is IGR J18007-4146, which is likely a CV based on follow-up Chandra observations and constraints from optical/IR catalogs. Utilizing simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations, as well as the available optical/IR data, we confirm the nature of IGR J18007-4146 as an intermediate polar type CV. Timing analysis of the XMM data reveals a periodic signal at 424.4 +/- 0.7 s that we interpret as the spin period of the white dwarf. Modeling the 0.3-78 keV spectrum, we use a thermal bremsstrahlung continuum but require intrinsic absorption as well as a soft component and strong Fe lines between 6 and 7 keV. We model the soft component using a single-temperature blackbody with kT = 73 +8/-6 eV. From the X-ray spectrum, we are able to measure the mass of the white dwarf to be 1.06 +0.19/-0.10 Msun, which means IGR J18007-4146 is more massive than the average for magnetic CVs., Comment: 9 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In contrast to the well-known phenomenon of frequency stabilization in a synchronized noisy nonlinear oscillator, little is known about its amplitude stability. In this paper, we investigate experimentally and theoretically the amplitude evolution and stability of a nonlinear nanomechanical self-sustained oscillator that is synchronized with an external harmonic drive. We show that the phase difference between the tones plays a critical role on the amplitude level, and we demonstrate that in the strongly nonlinear regime, its amplitude fluctuations are reduced considerably. These findings bring to light a new facet of the synchronization phenomenon, extending its range of applications beyond the field of clock-references and suggesting a new means to enhance oscillator amplitude stability., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We present results for the first observed outburst from the transient X-ray binary source MAXI J0637-430. This study is based on eight observations from the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and six observations from the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory X-Ray Telescope (Swift/XRT) collected from 2019 November 19 to 2020 April 26 as the 3-79 keV source flux declined from 8.2e-10 to 1.4e-12 erg/cm^2/s. We see the source transition from a soft state with a strong disk-blackbody component to a hard state dominated by a power-law or thermal Comptonization component. NuSTAR provides the first reported coverage of MAXI J0637-430 above 10 keV, and these broadband spectra show that a two-component model does not provide an adequate description of the soft state spectrum. As such, we test whether blackbody emission from the plunging region could explain the excess emission. As an alternative, we test a reflection model that includes a physical Comptonization continuum. Finally, we also test a spectral component based on reflection of a blackbody illumination spectrum, which can be interpreted as a simple approximation to the reflection produced by returning disk radiation due to the bending of light by the strong gravity of the black hole. We report new radio observations of a sample of thirty-six neutron star (NS) X-ray binaries, more than doubling the sample in the literature observed at current-day sensitivities. These sources include thirteen weakly-magnetised ($B<10^{10}$ G) and twenty-three strongly-magnetised ($B\geq10^{10}$ G) NSs. Sixteen of the latter category reside in high-mass X-ray binaries, of which only two systems were radio-detected previously. We detect four weakly and nine strongly-magnetised NSs; the latter are systematically radio fainter than the former and do not exceed $L_R \approx 3\times10^{28}$ erg/s. In turn, we confirm the earlier finding that the weakly-magnetized NSs are typically radio fainter than accreting stellar-mass black holes. While an unambiguous identification of the origin of radio emission in high-mass X-ray binaries is challenging, we find that in all but two detected sources (Vela X-1 and 4U 1700-37) the radio emission appears more likely attributable to a jet than the donor star wind. The strongly-magnetised NS sample does not reveal a global correlation between X-ray and radio luminosity, which may be a result of sensitivity limits. Furthermore, we discuss the effect of NS spin and magnetic field on radio luminosity and jet power in our sample. No current model can account for all observed properties, necessitating the development and refinement of NS jet models to include magnetic field strengths up to $10^{13}$ G. Finally, we discuss jet quenching in soft states of NS low-mass X-ray binaries, the radio non-detections of all observed very-faint X-ray binaries in our sample, and future radio campaigns of accreting NSs., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 31 pages, 8 figures, 8 tables (including online supplementary materials)

Transitional millisecond pulsars are millisecond pulsars that switch between a rotation-powered millisecond pulsar state and an accretion-powered X-ray binary state, and are thought to be an evolutionary stage between neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries and millisecond pulsars. So far, only three confirmed systems have been identified in addition to a handful of candidates. We present the results of a multi-wavelength study of the low-mass X-ray binary NGC 6652B in the globular cluster NGC 6652, including simultaneous radio and X-ray observations taken by the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array and the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and optical spectroscopy and photometry. This source is the second brightest X-ray source in NGC 6652 ($L_{\textrm{X}}\sim1.8\times10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$) and is known to be variable. We observe several X-ray flares over the duration of our X-ray observations, in addition to persistent radio emission and occasional radio flares. Simultaneous radio and X-ray data show no clear evidence of anti-correlated variability. Optical spectra of NGC 6652B indicate variable, broad H $\alpha$ emission which transitions from double-peaked emission to absorption over a time-scale of hours. We consider a variety of possible explanations for the source behaviour, and conclude that based on the radio and X-ray luminosities, short time-scale variability and X-ray flaring, and optical spectra, NGC 6652B is best explained as a transitional millisecond pulsar candidate that displays prolonged X-ray flaring behaviour. Here we report on X-ray observations of ten 17-60 keV sources discovered by the INTEGRAL satellite. The primary new information is sub-arcsecond positions obtained by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. In six cases (IGR J17040-4305, IGR J18017-3542, IGR J18112-2641, IGR J18434-0508, IGR J19504+3318, and IGR J20084+3221), a unique Chandra counterpart is identified with a high degree of certainty, and for five of these sources (all but J19504), Gaia distances or proper motions indicate that they are Galactic sources. For four of these, the most likely classifications are that the sources are magnetic Cataclysmic Variables (CVs). J20084 could be either a magnetic CV or a High Mass X-ray Binary. We classify the sixth source (J19504) as a likely Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). In addition, we find likely Chandra counterparts to IGR J18010-3045 and IGR J19577+3339, and the latter is a bright radio source and probable AGN. Quiescent black hole X-ray binaries (X-ray luminosities <1e34 erg/s) are believed to be fed by hot accretion flows that launch compact, relativistic jets. However, due to their low luminosities, quiescent jets have been detected in the radio waveband from only five systems so far. Here, we present radio observations of two quiescent black hole X-ray binaries with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. One system, GS 1124-684, was not detected. The other system, BW Cir, was detected over two different epochs in 2018 and 2020, for which we also obtained quasi-simultaneous X-ray detections with Chandra and Swift. BW Cir is now the sixth quiescent X-ray binary with a confirmed radio jet. However, the distance to BW Cir is uncertain, and we find that BW Cir shows different behaviour in the radio/X-ray luminosity plane depending on the correct distance. Estimates based on its G-type subgiant donor star place BW Cir at >25 kpc, while initial optical astrometric measurements from Gaia Data Release 2 suggested likely distances of just a few kpc. Here, we use the most recent measurements from Gaia Early Data Release 3 and find a distance d=7.1(+4.8/-3.9) kpc and a potential kick velocity PKV=165(+81/-17) km/s, with distances up to ~20 kpc possible based on its parallax and proper motion. Even though there is now less tension between the parallax and donor-star based distance measurements, it remains an unresolved matter, and we conclude with suggestions on how to reconcile the two measurements., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. We present the first joint NuSTAR and NICER observations of the ultra-compact X-ray binary (UCXB) 4U 1543$-$624 obtained in 2020 April. The source was at a luminosity of $L_{0.5-50\ \mathrm{keV}} = 4.9 (D/7\ \mathrm{kpc})^{2}\times10^{36}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ and showed evidence of reflected emission in the form of an O VIII line, Fe K line, and Compton hump within the spectrum. We used a full reflection model, known as xillverCO, that is tailored for the atypical abundances found in UCXBs, to account for the reflected emission. We tested the emission radii of the O and Fe line components and conclude that they originate from a common disk radius in the innermost region of the accretion disk ($R_{\rm in} \leq1.07\ R_{\mathrm{ISCO}}$). Assuming that the compact accretor is a neutron star (NS) and the position of the inner disk is the Alfv\'{e}n radius, we placed an upper limit on the magnetic field strength to be $B\leq0.7(D/7\ \mathrm {kpc})\times10^{8}$ G at the poles. Given the lack of pulsations detected and position of $R_{\rm in}$, it was likely that a boundary layer region had formed between the NS surface and inner edge of the accretion disk with an extent of 1.2 km. This implies a maximum radius of the neutron star accretor of $R_{\mathrm{NS}}\leq 12.1$ km when assuming a canonical NS mass of 1.4 $M_{\odot}$., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 10 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

Black hole X-ray binaries in the quiescent state (Eddington ratios typically $\lesssim$10$^{-5}$) display softer X-ray spectra (photon indices $\Gamma\sim2$) compared to higher-luminosity black hole X-ray binaries in the hard state ($\Gamma\sim1.7$). However, the cause of this softening, and its implications for the underlying accretion flow, are still uncertain. Here, we present quasi-simultaneous X-ray and radio spectral monitoring of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820$+$070 during the decay of its 2018 outburst and of a subsequent re-flare in 2019, providing an opportunity to monitor a black hole X-ray binary as it actively transitions into quiescence. We probe 1-10 keV X-ray luminosities as low as $L_{\rm X}\sim4\times10^{32}$ erg s$^{-1}$, equivalent to Eddington fractions of $\sim4\times10^{-7}$. During its decay towards quiescence, the X-ray spectrum of MAXI J1820$+$070 softens from $\Gamma\sim1.7$ to $\Gamma\sim2$, with the softening taking $\sim30$d, and completing at $L_{\rm X}\approx10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$ ($\approx10^{-5} L_{\rm Edd}$). While the X-ray spectrum softens, the radio spectrum generally remains flat/inverted throughout the decay. We also find that MAXI J1820$+$070 follows a radio ($L_{\rm R}$) -- X-ray luminosity correlation of the form $L_{\rm R} \propto L_{\rm X}^{0.52\pm0.07}$, making it the fourth black hole system to follow the so-called `standard track' unbroken over several (in this case, four) decades in $L_{\rm X}$. Comparing the radio/X-ray spectral evolution(s) with the $L_{\rm R}$ -- $L_{\rm X}$ plane, we find that the X-ray softening is consistent with X-rays produced by Comptonization processes in a radiatively inefficient accretion flow. We generally disfavor X-ray emission originating solely from within the jet, with the possible exception of X-rays produced via synchrotron self-Compton processes., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figure, 1 appendix. The recurring transient outbursts in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) provide us with strong test-beds for constraining the poorly understood accretion process. While impossible to image directly, phase-resolved spectroscopy can provide a powerful diagnostic to study their highly complex, time-dependent accretion discs. We present an 8-month long multi-wavelength (UV, optical, X-ray) monitoring campaign of the new candidate black hole LMXB MAXI J0637$-$430 throughout its 2019/2020 outburst, using the {\em Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory}, as well as three quasi-simultaneous epochs of Gemini/GMOS optical spectroscopy. We find evidence for the existence of a correlation between the X-ray irradiation heating the accretion disc and the evolution of the He {\sc ii} 4686 \AA emission line profiles detected in the optical spectra. Our results demonstrate a connection between the line emitting regions and physical properties of the X-ray irradiation heating the discs during outburst cycles of LMXBs. Further, we are able to show that changes in the physical properties of the irradiation heating the disc in outburst can be imprinted within the H/He emission line profiles themselves in these systems., Comment: 23 pages (including 3 appendices), 10 figures, supplementary figures included in the appendices, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We continue the analysis of NuSTAR data from the recent discovery outburst of MAXI J1820+070 (optical counterpart ASASSN-18ey), focussing on an observation including unusual flaring behaviour during the hard to soft state transition, which is a short phase of outbursts and so comparatively rarely observed. Two plateaus in flux are separated by a variable interval lasting ~10 ks, which shows dipping then flaring stages. The variability is strongest (with fractional variability up to $F_{\rm Var}\sim10\%$) at high energies and reduces as the contribution from disc emission becomes stronger. Flux-resolved spectra show that the variability is primarily due to the power law flux changing. We also find a long soft lag of the thermal behind the power law emission, which is $20_{-1.2}^{+1.6}$ s during the flaring phase. The lag during the dipping stage has a different lag-energy spectrum, which may be due to a wave passing outwards through the disc. Time resolved spectral fitting suggests that the lag during the flaring stage may be due to the disc re-filling after being disrupted to produce the power law flare, perhaps related to the system settling after the jet ejection which occurred around 1 day before. This paper considers the dynamic response of a single degree of freedom system with nonlinear stiffness and nonlinear damping that is subjected to both resonant direct excitation and resonant parametric excitation, with a general phase between the two. This generalizes and expands on previous studies of nonlinear effects on parametric amplification, notably by including the effects of nonlinear damping, which is commonly observed in a large variety of systems, including micro- and nano-scale resonators. Using the method of averaging, a thorough parameter study is carried out that describes the effects of the amplitudes and relative phase of the two forms of excitation. The effects of nonlinear damping on the parametric gain are first derived. The transitions among various topological forms of the frequency response curves, which can include isolae, dual peaks, and loops, are determined, and bifurcation analyses in parameter spaces of interest are carried out. In general, these results provide a complete picture of the system response and allow one to select drive conditions of interest that avoid bistability while providing maximum amplitude gain, maximum phase sensitivity, or a flat resonant peak, in systems with nonlinear damping.
