This study measured and compared the psychophysiological and psychological differences in the responses of men and women to olfactory stimuli from herbal plants. A total of 30 adult participants (mean age, 27.4 years; SD, ±8.97 years; 15 men and 15 women) were included and five different herbs were used: lavender, rosemary, sage, apple mint, and pelargonium. During olfactory activity, participants smelled each herb for 90 seconds while relying solely on their sense of smell and electroencephalography was used to measure brain wave changes. Subsequently, participants’ emotional states were assessed using the semantic differential method (SDM). The results indicated significant differences in the relative alpha, relative slow alpha, and relative low alpha frequencies in the prefrontal lobe (Fp1 and Fp2) for both genders (P < 0.05). Significant gender differences were observed in the relative beta, relative middle beta, ratio of sensorimotor rhythms-mid beta to theta frequencies in the occipital lobe (O1 and O2) (P < 0.05). The SDM results showed significant natural emotional responses in both genders after olfactory stimulation with herbal plants. Furthermore, compared with men, women exhibited more natural emotions to sage, apple mint, and pelargonium olfactory stimulation. These findings affirm the calming effects of olfactory stimulation with herbal plants for both genders, thus underscoring gender differences in preferences and psychological responses. The underlying therapeutic mechanisms of care farming activities have not been addressed using psychophysiological data. We aimed to understand frontal cortex activation in adults during care farming activities and to explore the psychophysiological effects. Using a randomized crossover study method, 20 adults (average age, 31.3 ± 9.8 years) participated in 10 care farming activities, (four gardening activities, three animal-mediated activities, and three off-farming activities) for 3 minutes each at an actual care farm. Electroencephalography (EEG) was performed during the activity, and emotional states were assessed using subjective emotional questionnaires after each activity. The EEG results revealed that alpha activity increased during gardening activities, such as organizing garden plots and planting plants. Spectral edge frequency 50, which predicts the degree of arousal, increased during interaction with dogs. The results of the subjective emotional questionnaire revealed that participants experienced positive emotions, such as vigor, comfort, naturalness, and relaxation, when participating in care farming activities compared with those while resting. Therefore, this study suggests that care farming activities can induce changes in the frontal cortex activation and positive emotional states in participants. Visual stimuli from green plants have positive effects on mental health. This study aimed to compare human responses to varying plant types [live, artificial, two-dimensional (2D), and three-dimensional (3D) plant models] as visual stimuli. Thirty adults (age, 29.9 ± 11.5 years) viewed each plant form while an electroencephalography (EEG) measured their brain activity. Psychological responses were assessed using the semantic differential method (SDM). No significant differences were observed among visual stimuli; however, brain activity differences varied between male and female participants. Males who observed live and artificial plants had a higher relative alpha (RA) spectrum (RAS) and relative fast alpha (RFA) spectrum frequencies at Fp1 and Fp2 (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01 vs. P < 0.05 and P < 0.01, respectively), indicating greater emotional stability. Similarly, male participants who viewed 2D models had higher RA and RFA frequencies at Fp1 (P < 0.01, P < 0.01) and Fp2 (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). Male participants who observed 3D models exhibited higher RA, RSA, and RFA frequencies at Fp1 (P < 0.01). Live and artificial plants were deemed the most calming (P < 0.01). Both sexes found live plants to be the most pleasant (males: P < 0.01; females: P < 0.05) and natural (males: P < 0.001; females: P < 0.01). Overall, alpha wave differences were not significant among plant types, and live plants elicited a trend toward emotional stability. These findings suggest that 3D plant models can be as effective as real plants in psychophysiological applications, indicating their potential benefits for enhancing mental health in urban environments. Previous reports on the psychological and physiological relaxing effects of feet contact with uncoated solid wood have already been published. However, there are no studies on the effects of feet contact with coated wood, which is commonly used for residential floors. This study aimed to validate the psychological and physiological relaxing effects of sole contact with oil-finished wood. In total, 27 women university students (mean age: 21.9 ± 1.9 years) participated in this study. Psychological indices such as the modified semantic differential method and the Profile of Mood States Second Edition were used. The oxyhemoglobin (oxy-Hb) concentrations in the prefrontal cortex were determined using near-infrared time-resolved spectroscopy. The sympathetic nervous activity and the parasympathetic nervous activity were measured using heart rate variability. The flat plate for tactile stimulation was oil-finished wood, and uncoated wood and marble were used for comparison. The sole of the feet of each participant touched each material for 90 s. Feet contact with oil-finished and uncoated wood had relaxing effects on psychological and physiological responses compared with marble. The relaxing effects of oil-finished wood and uncoated wood were similar. That is, they significantly increased subjective feelings of comfort and relaxation, improved mood states, and decreased oxy-Hb concentration in the left prefrontal cortex compared with marble. However, there were no statistically significant differences in terms of right prefrontal cortex and sympathetic nervous activities between oil-finished wood and marble. BackgroundAs global populations age, the suitability of community outdoor spaces for older adult residents has become a critical urban planning concern. However, comprehensive evaluation methods for assessing these spaces are lacking. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the aging-suitability of community outdoor spaces in Zhengzhou, China, and provide optimization suggestions for urban planners and policymakers.MethodsAn evaluation index system was established using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), with aging-suitability as the goal layer. The criteria layer included outdoor behavioral activities, green space configuration, transportation and road systems, and basic service facilities. The semantic differential (SD) method was employed to conduct a comprehensive evaluation among older adult residents in three communities (A, B, and C) in Zhengzhou city.ResultsThe evaluation revealed that older adult residents generally had a favorable assessment of their community spaces’ aging-suitability. Community A received the highest overall rating. Green space configuration and transportation systems emerged as critical factors influencing aging-suitability.ConclusionThe combined AHP-SD approach proved effective in evaluating the aging-suitability of community outdoor spaces. The study identified key areas for improvement in each community, with variations in strengths and weaknesses across the three sites. Implications: Based on the findings, optimization suggestions are proposed in four aspects: enhancing outdoor behavioral activities, improving green space landscapes, refining road transportation systems, and upgrading basic service facilities. These recommendations can guide urban planners and policymakers in creating more age-friendly community environments.

The mode of urban renewal in China has changed from incremental expansion to a value-added stage, and the development of cities has increasingly focused on the human experience and quality improvement. However, Cultural Street Vending and the unique street spaces in the historic districts that bear important connotations to the city have shown a trend of rapid decline and even disappearance. Therefore, how to identify the characteristics and connotations of such street vending spaces, grasp the relationship between perception of locality and built environment elements in different states and formulate targeted protection and renewal strategies is presently an urgent problem to be solved. Many studies have now discussed in detail the identification of elements, street perception and preservation strategies for historic districts. However, the Cultural Street Vending space, which carries special urban memory connotations, has been neglected, especially the characterisation of this type of space in different time dimensions. This paper takes the Cultural Street Vending space as a research object and focuses on the perceptual differences between its market day and non-market day, aiming at grasping the perceptual characteristics and constituent elements of this type of street space in different time states, as well as the patterns of changes they undergo. This paper took the Baxian Temple, a typical Cultural Street Vending space in a historic district of Xi'an, as the research object and took 30 architecture students as the evaluators to score 33 pairs of adjectives and recall the elements of nine streets. This paper compared and analysed the differences in the structure of people's psychological perception of the street in the state of market day and non-market day by SD method. It was found that the activities of the vendors obviously promoted people's positive emotions, and three commonality factors including impression, vitality and morphosis were extracted through the factor analysis. Moreover, through the element recall method to understand the change in element perception on the market day, we found that the range of people's perception was smaller on the market day and summarised the element map of the space and the element components of high, medium and low characteristics. The correlation analysis between psychological quantities and environmental elements revealed that people's positive psychology has a positive correlation with vendors, goods and street components and a negative correlation with greening, colour and texture. We compared the effects of horticultural activities according to cognitive demand levels on psychophysiological responses in adults. Thirty-two adults in their 20s were included. Participants performed 10 horticultural activities (raking, planting transplants, fertilizing, tying plants to stakes, harvesting, sowing, conducting cuttage, planting potted plants, cutting and washing, arranging flowers) for 150 seconds at two levels of cognitive demand. Electroencephalographic (EEG) and electrocardiographic measurements were acquired during the activity. After each activity, the participants’ emotional states were evaluated using the semantic differential method (SDM). The EEG results, according to comparison by activity, showed that for nine activities, excluding raking, relative theta decreased when performing tasks at a level of high cognitive difficulty (HCD) compared with those with a low cognitive difficulty (LCD), and relative beta, relative gamma, fast alpha, and relative low beta increased, indicating activation of the prefrontal cortex. In the relative theta power spectra, the cuttage activity was found to be the lowest when performing tasks at a high level high cognitive difficulty, and the working memory function was activated the most compared with other activities. When sowing at a low level of cognitive demand, participants’ heart rate decreased and stabilized. When potted plants were harvested at a high level of cognitive difficulty, the ratio of low frequency to high frequency increased, and the sympathetic nervous system was activated. In addition, when planting transplants, and cutting and washing were performed at a high level of cognitive difficulty, and the standard deviation of the RR interval was high, indicating a high ability of the autonomic nervous system to resist stress. As a result of the SDM, the emotional state according to task difficulty was found to be more stable and relaxed than high cognitive difficulty, but a significant increase in comfort, relaxation, and naturalness was achieved when nine gardening tasks with low cognitive difficulty were performed, with the exception of sowing. The results of this study show that tasks with high cognitive difficulty activate working memory, whereas those with low cognitive difficulty stabilize and relax brain activation. Therefore, this study confirmed that an intervention in horticultural activities with an appropriate level of cognitive difficulty could have a significant effect on psychophysiological changes in adults. The basic composition of plant communities is an important part of the landscape, and good plant community design can effectively enhance the ecological benefits of the landscape. The article selects four sites in Xining City and Gerga Village of Guide County, Qinghai Province, as research objects and designs the relevant image factors of plant landscape design based on the whole life cycle of plant landscape and carbon sequestration benefits. The evaluation and analysis of plant configuration in the study area were carried out using the beauty degree evaluation method and semantic difference method, and the measurement was carried out for the ecological benefits of plant configuration. The mean value of SBE of plant configuration in the study area was around 0.05 points, and the mean values of SD scores of 12 plant landscape image factors were distributed between [0.507,1.293] points. The maximum carbon sequestration benefit of Qinghai spruce could reach 178.35kg·a−1, which was 72.82% higher than the extreme value of scrub with the lowest carbon sequestration benefit. The mean value of carbon sequestration per unit leaf area of different types of sequestering plants was 14.09g·m−2·d−1, and the mean value of oxygen release was 7.99g·m−2·d−1, respectively, and the value of ecological benefit of purifying the atmosphere produced by landscape plants in 2033 was 2.21 times higher than that in 2023 The value of ecological benefit produced by landscape plants to purify the atmosphere in 2033 was 2.21 times of that in 2023. In the landscape design of Sanxiang in Qinghai Province, it is necessary to pay attention to the spatial location design of plant configuration, and it is also necessary to fully combine trees and shrubs in order to achieve optimal ecological benefits.

With the rise of digital media, the visual design of public art has gradually added multimodal interactive experience from purely conforming to information communication. Starting from the multimodal integration of public art visual communication design, this study takes several groups of public art landscape projects in a certain region as research objects to explore the relationship between the multimodal visual design of public art landscape and its public satisfaction. Firstly, the evaluation standard for public art visual communication design is constructed. The sample visual communication design is analyzed using the semantic difference method and then combined with the factor analysis method to provide a comprehensive evaluation. Based on determining the satisfaction effect indexes, the AHP method is used to assign weights to each index. Finally, the satisfaction effect results of the sample visual communication designs are obtained. After utilizing the result equation, the relationship between public art visual communication design and landscape satisfaction effect is explored. The overall appearance of public art visual communication design is presented better, and the impact of multimodal fusion visual communication design is especially prominent in samples 3, 2, and 10. The satisfaction effect of the sample visual communication design is also more satisfactory, with 70% of the sample landscapes scoring above 1.5. Meanwhile, the study verified the positive and significant influence of public art visual communication design on the satisfaction effect of landscapes. The theoretical basis and methodological exploration for the multimodal integration research of public art can be provided by this study.

A second-generation fast Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm product shape multi-objective imagery optimization model based on degradation (DNSGA-II) strategy is proposed to make the product appearance optimization scheme meet the complex emotional needs of users for the product. First, the semantic differential method and K-Means cluster analysis are applied to extract the multi-objective imagery of users; then, the product multidimensional scale analysis is applied to classify the research objects, and again the reference samples are screened by the semantic differentialmethod, and the samples are parametrized in two dimensions by using elliptic Fourier analysis; finally, the fuzzy dynamic evaluation function is used as the objective function of the algorithm, and the coordinates of key points of product contours Finally, with the fuzzy dynamic evaluation function as the objective function of the algorithm and the coordinates of key points of the product profile as the decision variables, the optimal product profile solution set is solved by DNSGA-II. The validity of the model is verified by taking the optimization of the shape scheme of the hospital connection site as an example. For comparison with DNSGA-II, other multi-objective optimization algorithms are also presented. To evaluate the performance of each algorithm, the performance evaluation index values of the five multi-objective optimization algorithms are calculated in this paper. In the present study, a series of perceptual experiments were conducted for designing a new sports-type motorcycle: 1) A perceptual experiment was conducted to investigate the impressions of participants for existing models of sports-type motorcycles, using the semantic differential method. The results of the experiment were used to define the concept of the new model. 2) Designers drew various sketches that could have matched the concept. Then, the sketches were used in an experiment and two alternatives were chosen and refined for building mockups. 3) A more perceptual experiment was conducted using the two mockups with other real motorcycles to measure the impressions of them. Using the results, the design of the new sports-type motorcycle was finally defined. Through this affective design process, the efficiency of the design was improved and the term of the development was shortened. This study explored the overall visual elements of arcade buildings and streetscapes from the perspective of tourists and then evaluated their influence on the identity and emotion of places. The scope of the research was to take the arcade building in the port area of Shantou Small Park in Guangdong, China, and apply the eye-tracking experiment method and semantic difference method. This entailed collecting the eye-tracking data of 16 people, implementing 334 questionnaires for evaluation, verifying the correlation between the visual elements and place identity emotions, and then screening out the visual elements that affect place identity through correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis. The results show that plaque text morphological richness (p = 0.045 < 0.05, and the regression coefficient B = 0.146), the color brightness of plaque text (p = 0.031 < 0.01, and the regression coefficient B = 0.171), window morphological richness (p = 0.038 < 0.05, and the regression coefficient B = 0.106), window color brilliance (p = 0.047 < 0.01, and regression coefficient B = 0.094), and plant color brilliance (p = 0.029 < 0.05, and the regression coefficient B = 0.154) are five visual element evaluation factors that have a significant correlation with the identity and emotion of places. Although the fineness of architectural decoration is negatively correlated with place identity, it is not obviously significant. Biobased composites offer unique properties in the context of sustainable material production as well as end-of-life disposal, which places them as viable alternatives to fossil-fuel-based materials. However, the large-scale application of these materials in product design is hindered by their perceptual handicaps and understanding the mechanism of biobased composite perception, and its constituents could pave the way to creating commercially successful biobased composites. This study examines the role of bimodal (visual and tactile) sensory evaluation in the formation of biobased composite perception through the Semantic Differential method. It is observed that the biobased composites could be grouped into different clusters based on the dominance and interplay of various senses in perception forming. Attributes such as Natural, Beautiful, and Valuable are seen to correlate with each other positively and are influenced by both visual and tactile characteristics of the biobased composites. Attributes such as Complex, Interesting, and Unusual are also positively correlated but dominated by visual stimuli. The perceptual relationships and components of beauty, naturality, and value and their constituent attributes are identified, along with the visual and tactile characteristics that influence these assessments. Material design leveraging these biobased composite characteristics could lead to the creation of sustainable materials that would be more attractive to designers and consumers. According to the perceptual engineering research paradigm, rock tea packaging design research framework of perceptual engineering is used as a guide to determine the typical samples and core perceptual vocabulary of rock tea packaging through various methods such as literature search, expert evaluation, KJ method, questionnaire survey, etc. The semantic difference method is used to quantify user perceptions and conduct principal component analysis to arrive at rock tea packaging presenting four core perceptual attributes: bright, environmentally friendly, exquisite and the mapping relationship between the core perceptual vocabulary and design elements was obtained through class category analysis to obtain a rock tea packaging design that fits the perceptual cognition of young consumers.

China fully built a wealthy society but faced a serious COVID-19 epidemic together with the rest of the world. The emergence of the epidemic highlights the importance of sports parks for physical activity. By reviewing national fitness policies and identifying several types of sports parks, this paper investigates urban dwellers' usage and preferences in sports parks by means of a questionnaire, with behavioural observation and interviews as complementary research methods. Taking the Beijing Olympic Forest Park, Sun Park, and Huilongguan Park as examples, this study reveals that participants present a high overall satisfaction with the sports parks. The factor analysis indicates that Sports Facilities and Maintenance & Management are the first and second most significant factors influencing residents' willingness to use sports parks. Urban parks provide their residents with a space for activities and interactions, and soundscapes play an important role in influencing the residents' sense of experience of the park environment, with the result that the preferences of residents regarding multiple sound sources can be used as the basis of improving the soundscape quality and optimizing the function of urban parks. Using Shanghai Century Park as the research area, this study focused on the residents' preference to multiple sound sources based on registered residence differences, and comprehensively used the semantic differential method, importance-performance analysis model, and multinomial logit model to conduct quantitative research on urban park soundscapes and combined the measurement results of the soundscape with the residents' perception and preference. The results showed that the artificial sounds in Century Park were noisy during the morning and evening peak, while the human sounds were noisy when residents gathered in the park. There was a close relationship between the favorability and subjective loudness of urban park soundscapes, and the residents' perceptions of urban park soundscapes substantially differed in terms of loudness, tone, and sense of belonging, whereas the differences in the perception of timbre, coverage, and sound source distance were relatively small. Furthermore, it is necessary to enhance the role of natural sounds as well as control the main noise-producing sound sources so that various sounds in the park will not interfere with each other; the optimization of soundscapes should also focus on the residents' different soundscape preferences due to their individual characteristics. This study was conducted to determine the physiological and psychological benefits of integrating software coding and horticultural activity. Participants included 30 adults in their 20s. The subjects randomly engaged in activities—namely, connecting Arduino components, coding, planting, and a combined coding and horticultural activities. During the activity, two subjective evaluations were conducted at the end of each activity, and participants’ brain waves were measured. The spectral edge frequency 50% of alpha spectrum band (ASEF50) and ratio of sensorimotor rhythm from mid beta to theta (RSMT) were activated in the prefrontal lobe as participants performed combined coding and horticultural activities. When performing these combined activities, relative beta (RB) increased, and relative theta (RT) decreased in the prefrontal lobe. In addition, ASEF50, relative low beta (RLB), and relative mid beta (RMB) were activated during plant-based activities (planting and a combined coding and horticultural activities). The subjective evaluations revealed that the plant-based activities had a positive effect on participants’ emotions. This study shows that activities combining coding and horticulture had a positive impact on physiological relaxation and increased concentration in adults compared with other activities and was also linked with positive subjectively reported emotions.

This entailed collecting the eye-tracking data of 16 people, implementing 334 questionnaires for evaluation, verifying the correlation between the visual elements and place identity emotions, and then screening out the visual elements that affect place identity through correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis. The results show that plaque text morphological richness (p = 0.045 < 0.05, and the regression coefficient B = 0.146), the color brightness of plaque text (p = 0.031 < 0.01, and the regression coefficient B = 0.171), window morphological richness (p = 0.038 < 0.05, and the regression coefficient B = 0.106), window color brilliance (p = 0.047 < 0.01, and regression coefficient B = 0.094), and plant color brilliance (p = 0.029 < 0.05, and the regression coefficient B = 0.154) are five visual element evaluation factors that have a significant correlation with the identity and emotion of places. Although the fineness of architectural decoration is negatively correlated with place identity, it is not obviously significant. The research results provide reference for the visual control design of arcade buildings.

We aimed to compare psychophysiological responses in adults according to cognitive demand levels for horticultural activities to confirm the feasibility of horticultural activity for improving attention and emotional states. A total of 60 adults in their 20s were included in this crossover design study. Participants performed soil-mixing activities with 2 cognitive demand levels for 2 min each. Electroencephalography (EEG) and electrocardiography (ECG) were performed during these activities. After each activity, the semantic differential method (SDM) was used to evaluate the emotional states of the participants. EEG results revealed that relative fast alpha and low beta power spectrums in the frontal lobes were high during the activity with high cognitive demand compared to those during the low demand activity, which indicates activation in the prefrontal cortex. ECG results showed that during the high cognitive demand activity, the standard deviation of the RR intervals of male adults was high, indicating a high-stress resistance ability of the autonomic nervous system. However, as a result of the SDM, there were no significant differences in emotional states according to the level of activity difficulty. Therefore, this study confirmed the possibility that the intervention of horticultural activities of an appropriate difficulty did not negatively affect subjective emotional changes and could have a positive effect on the improvement of attention levels and emotional stability in adults. The number of inbound tourists had been increasing year on year but has decreased dramatically due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 in Japan. Therefore, to recover the number of inbound tourists and attract new inbound tourists when this pandemic is over, it will be necessary to conduct online promotions to motivate tourism. The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of images that promote tourism motivation on social networking services and websites. An experiment to evaluate impressions of the composition of Japanese food photographs was conducted. Twenty-six different photographic compositions were prepared for five Japanese dishes. The degree of change in the study subjects' cerebral blood flow was analyzed. The change in cerebral blood flow was found to be greater for photos taken directly from above or at an angle of 45 degrees than for photos taken from the side of any of the dishes. In addition, it was found that the change in cerebral blood flow was greater for photos that focus on the food and do not show whole plates or bowls rather than showing entire plates or bowls of food. The visual imagery preference of ten public poster samples is collected from 40 participants by online questionnaire with the semantic differential method. The results show that the audience's visual imagery at the technical aspect is mainly related to the richness of colors, graphics, and texts. When receiving the information from the meaning aspect of the poster correctly, the visual imagery will be influenced by the type of theme. Most importantly, the same or similar visual imagery at the technical and meaning aspect encourages audiences to explore the deep information of posters. As a new type of healthy public space, greenway users carry out leisure activities, exercise, sightseeing and necessary transportation in greenway. However, at present, there is little research on greenway users' evaluation and perception of greenway, and there is no comprehensive exploration of Greenway environment from a humanistic perspective. Combined with the research and actual situation of the existing representative greenways in Chinese cities, this paper refers to a large number of documents, applies the semantic difference method and multiple regression analysis method, analyzes the current situation of the Dongfengqu greenway, explores the influencing factors and impact evaluation of the greenway environment from the perspective of greenway users' perception, and puts forward suggestions on the optimization of the greenway environment in Zhengzhou from multiple levels. The main conclusion of this paper comes from the data conclusion obtained by semantic difference method, which is feasible in the resident evaluation of greenway use. Temporal dominance (TD) methods can be used to record temporal changes in multiple sensory and affective responses. TD methods have found wide applications in the analysis of eating experiences of humans. However, extant analyses performed on TD data do not fully utilize the time-series properties of such data. The present study validates the prospect of principal motion analysis (PMA) of TD data. PMA is an extension of principal component analysis, and can be used to resolve multivariate motion data into base principal motions. In this study, panelists were asked to evaluate the tastes of ten types of pickled plums using the temporal dominance of sensations (TDS) and emotions (TDE) methods. Additionally, the panelists were asked to rate the plums using the semantic differential method. Results obtained using both methods were observed to demonstrate good agreement with each other in terms of the structures of reduced variable spaces. As realized in this article, implementation of the combined TD–PMA approach can potentially facilitate statistical discrimination of all food products, whereas conventional methods, such as principal component analysis of data provided via use of the semantic differential method, can at best discriminate only 67 percent of product pairs. The article aims to study the possibilities, identify features, and assess the prospects for using the LMS MOODLE system (learning management system "Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment") for the formation of language skills in multilingual education. The study involved two groups of respondents, comparable in gender and age: 112 linguistic students (group A) and 109 non-linguistic students studying several foreign languages (group B). The respondents' answers to the questions of a specially developed questionnaire were analyzed, which made it possible to compare the parameters of training using the LMS MOODLE platform and traditional classroom training. To determine the connotative (individual-value) attitude towards obtaining multilingual education using the LMS MOODLE platform and to identify its subjective-personal meaning, Ch. Osgood's semantic differential method was used on the basis of a seven-point bipolar scale. Linguistic and non-linguistic students assessed differently LMS MOODLE platform for multilingual education, which is associated with different motives for acquiring multilingual competence and its professional significance. This study aimed to compare the brain activity and emotional states of elementary school students during horticultural and nonhorticultural activities. A total of 30 participants with a mean age of 11.4 ± 1.3 years were included. This experiment was conducted at Konkuk University campus in Korea. Participants performed horticultural activities such as harvesting, planting, sowing seeds, and mixing soil. Nonhorticultural activities included playing with a ball, solving math problems, watching animation videos, folding paper, and reading a book. The study had a crossover experimental design. Brain activity of the prefrontal lobes was measured by electroencephalography during each activity for 3 minutes. On completion of each activity, participants answered a subjective emotion questionnaire using the semantic differential method (SDM). Results showed that relative theta (RT) power spectrum was significantly lower in both prefrontal lobes of participants when engaged in harvesting and reading a book. The relative mid beta (RMB) power spectrum was significantly higher in both prefrontal lobes when participants engaged in harvesting and playing with a ball. The ratio of the RMB power spectrum to the RT power spectrum reflects concentration. This ratio increased during harvesting activity, indicating that children’s concentration also increased. The sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) from mid beta to theta (RSMT), another indicator of concentration, was significantly higher in the right prefrontal lobe during harvesting than during other activities. Furthermore, SDM results showed that the participants felt more natural and relaxed when performing horticultural activities than nonhorticultural activities. Horticultural activities may improve brain activity and psychological relaxation in children. Harvesting activity was most effective for improving children’s concentration compared with nonhorticultural activities.

This study was conducted to compare the concentration and emotional condition of elementary school students performing an intensive assignment in the presence or absence of foliage plants, using electroencephalography (EEG) and a modified semantic differential method (SDM). In a crossover experimental design, 30 elementary students performed a 3-min intensive age-appropriate arithmetic assignment in the presence or absence of foliage plants. Continuous EEG monitoring in the frontal lobe was performed using a wireless dry EEG device. Immediately thereafter, subjective evaluation of emotions was performed using the SDM. The concentration of the male elementary students was significantly higher when the assignment was performed in the presence vs. absence of plants as evidenced by the increase in the ratio of spectral edge frequency of 50 and a decrease in the relative theta power spectrum in the right frontal lobe. The SDM results revealed a significant psychological relaxation when the assignment was performed in the presence of plants. Therefore, the presence of foliage plants in the space where the elementary students performed the intensive assignment led to positive effects on concentration and emotional condition.

The article presents the findings of the psycholinguistic experiments based on the semantic differential technique. The experiments’ objective was to identify the effect of illustration on a verbal text perception. We compared the respondents’ assessment of verbal texts and illustrated texts (with illustrations in major and minor color schemes). The data analysis reveals seven factors: Assessment , Naturalness , Strength , Imagery , Romanticism , Dynamism , Commonality . We identified the illustrations parameters affecting the assessment of creolized texts: adding any illustration, the illustration color scheme matching the verbal text content, the color scheme naturalness, the illustration color scheme matching the text emotional and semantic dominant, the use of minor color scheme. The most pragmatic potential was identified in the parameter “(non)matching the color scheme with the semantic dominant of the text” (it is important for the assessment of five out of seven factors). We found that both conformity ( Strength factor assessment) and inconsistency (for Dynamism , Imagery , Romance , Evaluation factors assessment) can be significant. The text creolization increases its Imagery and changes Romanticism factors. The color scheme matching the image content increases the text Naturalness assessment, and an unnatural color scheme decreases it. There was a decrease in Assessment if a minor color scheme was used.

China fully built a wealthy society but faced a serious COVID-19 epidemic together with the rest of the world. The emergence of the epidemic highlights the importance of sports parks for physical activity. By reviewing national fitness policies and identifying several types of sports parks, this paper investigates urban dwellers’ usage and preferences in sports parks by means of a questionnaire, with behavioural observation and interviews as complementary research methods. Taking the Beijing Olympic Forest Park, Sun Park, and Huilongguan Park as examples, this study reveals that participants present a high overall satisfaction with the sports parks. The factor analysis indicates that Sports Facilities and Maintenance & Management are the first and second most significant factors influencing residents’ willingness to use sports parks. This research can guide the planning and construction of sports park in the future.

Aims: The COVID-19 pandemic and consequent extreme restrictions imposed by governments across the world forced psychotherapists to abruptly change their working modality. The first aim of the current study was to assess psychotherapists' self-perceptions (i.e., affective and cognitive perceptions about their self and their self in relation to clients) when providing telepsychotherapy during the first peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy. The second aim was to explore the associations between psychotherapists' self-perceptions, characteristics, and clinical practices. Method: An online survey was administered to 281 Italian licensed psychotherapists (Mage =45.15; SD =10.2; 83.6% female) between April 5 and May 10, 2020. The survey comprised ad-hoc questions that were designed to collect sociodemographic details and information related to working practices. Moreover, a semantic differential (SD) scale was developed to assess psychotherapists' self-perceptions, and a factor analysis was performed from the SD items. Results: The SD scale showed an overall trend of positive psychotherapist self-perception during telepsychotherapy, despite reports of greater fatigue and directive and talkative behavior during sessions. Four SD factors accounted for 45% of the variance: "Affective Availability," "Attitude Predisposition," "Well-being," and "Interventionism." Scores on the first three factors were indicative of psychotherapists' Positive vs. Negative self-perception. A comparison of the Positive and Negative attitudinal profiles using the chi-squared test with Yates's correction and a Monte Carlo simulation found that psychotherapists with a Positive profile reported greater satisfaction with the telematic modality and were more likely to perceive that their clients were able to maintain privacy during sessions. Conclusion: The results suggest that Italian psychotherapists have been able to promptly adapt to the imposed telematic modality during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, they may have attempted to compensate for their physical distance from clients by intervening more during sessions. These findings may support psychotherapists who are currently practicing and inform future practitioners who are considering the use of telematic treatment as a routine component of psychotherapeutic care.
