Introduction: Currently, there are several types of devices and techniques for the rehabilitation of the tibiotarsal joint. However, complete and effective rehabilitation still falls short of expectations, since the existing devices are not adaptable to the level of torque and the number of repetitions and sessions to be performed, as these depend on each patient and on the stage at which he is finds. Objetives: To improve a mechatronic device for the rehabilitation of the tibiotarsal joint, the Therapheet. Methods: This study presents a review of the tibiotarsal joint rehabilitation protocols, as well as the classification of devices used for this purpose. Thus, the purpose is to improve the Therapheet, developed at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Minho, obtaining a viable, functional and safe rehabilitation device, standing out from the rest on the market, since it allows the execution of the six rehabilitation exercises. Results: It was obtained a prototype of equipment for rehabilitation of the tibiotarsal joint was obtained, proposing changes for improvement according to the specificities and requirements for such a device, having been subjected to a series of preliminary tests to verify its functionality, performance and suitability. The equipment proved to be functional, in terms of executing the ankle rehabilitation movements, however, it still manifests some flaws in terms of the user's stability, sudden movements, and above all dysfunctions arising from excess mass that make up its structure and limitations pneumatic technology adopted. Conclusions: The control of the amplitude of the characteristic angles of the movements of the foot is still done manually, so it would be significant to implement an automated system that would allow the control of the range of amplitude, according to the patient's rehabilitation phase.
The current industrial scenario points to an increase in industrial competitiveness, in the complexity of machinery and equipment, in the costs of industrial installations, in high demand products, in addition to the concern with aspects of industrial safety and the environment. This trend induces large global industries to increasingly invest in devices, technologies and tools designed to predict failures resulting from non-conformities and breakdowns in machinery, equipment and industrial installations. Given this scenario, the field of action that deals with predictive maintenance, forecast analysis and failure diagnosis has gained a prominent place, in addition to several investments in research and development, mainly with policies aimed at the design of industry 4.0. With the industry 4.0 approach, it is possible to analyze mechanical components in a dynamic regime and respond in real time, that is, without the need to stop the machine, which is directly related to the reduction of costs and production time. That said, the present thesis aims to present a new methodology in the detection and monitoring of tribological failures in internal combustion engines, through machine learning by unsupervised methods and big data, using signal processing techniques, from the collected data engine vibration and sound pressure level, using algorithms based on artificial neural networks (RNA) and cluster analysis, creating an intelligent system capable of detecting fault patterns, based on fault conditions and mechanical load variation in motors internal combustion Otto cycle

Wrist injuries are a very common type of pathology that can compromise most daily tasks. Conventional therapy is dependent on the availability of physiotherapists as well as devices designed for this purpose. Conventional devices do not accompany the patient throughout their rehabilitation process, requiring their constant replacement. Vibratory therapies emerged in recent years and have demonstrated several benefits in this area. However, there are few vibratory devices designed for wrist rehabilitation. In this paper, we propose two different portable and active models for wrist rehabilitation based on vibratory therapy for wrist rehabilitation. The first model has a cylindrical shape and the second model has a dumbbell shape. The results obtained showed that vibratory therapy can assist the wrist rehabilitation because it promoted improvements in joint amplitude gain in all wrist movements. Furthermore, the second device demonstrated higher joint gains than the first device. In addition, the results obtained from the measurement of accelerations demonstrate that the natural frequencies of both devices are adequate for wrist and forearm rehabilitation as well as the mode of vibration. There are differences between what the simulations predicted and what was obtained in practice in terms of natural frequency values., (undefined)

The increasing rate of lower limb amputations reinforces the need to develop a new suspension system that provides a better quality of life for the lower limb amputees. This study aimed to present a novel suspension system that improves amputee’s satisfaction in terms of donning and doffing process of the prosthetic lower limb. The design of the proposed suspension system was developed following the design methodology, to establish the amputee’s needs, objectives, functions, requirements and specifications in order to op-timize the final solution. The final solution is a combination of a guiding and fixation mechanisms that improve the donning and doffing process by driv-ing the serrated pin to the fixation system. The proposed suspension system is a good alternative to improve the quality of life of amputees with lower activity level on the daily basis., (undefined)

Introduction: One of the possible applications of ceramic thermal barriers is in shells (permanent moulds – die casting). The moulds` capacity to support very high temperatures (up to 1600 °C) plays a crucial role in the selection of materials due to the liquid state of the cast iron. Objectives: This paper presents and discusses the obtained results from robotic flame projection tests, carried out with the purpose to quantify the influence of several factors of flame sprayed in the adhesion strength of coatings of Nickel-Aluminium-Molybdenum and Zirconium Oxide. In literature a minimum adhesion strength was not found for the application of thermal ceramic barriers in the coating of permanent casting moulds, so in this work it is intended to obtain its values considering several combinations of projection parameters and substrates. Methods: The determination of the adhesion strength was performed according to the standard ASTM C633-79 where the coated test specimens were glued to CK45 steel against-specimens with a cyanoacrylate glue (LOCTITE 415). A weight of 100 N was then applied for 3 minutes to promote the initiation of the polymerization reaction of the cyanoacrylates and a period of 24 hours was needed so the bonded glue could acquire its maximum strength (sufficient enough to tear off the coating of the specimen). Finally tensile tests were carried out at the speed of 1 mm/min. Results: The main parameters studied are the material of the substrate, the projection angle and the substrate preheating temperature. The higher adhesion strength for the sprayed to 90° (average value of 6.2 MPa) was obtained by the specimens of spheroidal graphite cast iron (SGCI) with a preheating temperature of 120 °C. For the preheating of 90 °C and spray angle of 90° the aluminum-copper (AlCu) and brass specimens were the ones that obtained the higher adhesion strengths (average value of 4.5 MPa). The sprayed of 65° originates the higher adhesion strength in all the materials used for the substrate, being the highest value (average value of 8.3 MPa) obtained by the spheroidal graphite cast iron. Conclusions: The results obtained clearly suggest that the substrate material and the preheating temperature strongly influence the adhesion strength. The development of a new control system for a medical wrist rehabilitation device consists basically in the design of an intuitive controllable mechanism that aims to accept the parameters defined by the user and to respond adequately to that request. Two motors (a brushless motor “AEO A2830” and a stepper motor “Superior Electric M062”) are controlled by an Arduino development board, which receives and processes the instructions for the motors as well as for the acquisition software developed in LabVIEW (by National Instruments™). Two methods were used to define the interface between the user and therehabilitation mechanism, one of which is oriented to the electronic hardware and other one to the data acquisition software: the commands and instructions are addressed to the first one, while all the information is collected and registered on the second one. Since such rehabilitation mechanisms already exist, it is intended that the drawbacks of such equipment should also be addressed in the purpose of this study, complementing a gap in the health area.

The present article depicts whole work relates with the development of the mechanical project for the conception and design of an innovative cane, whose functionality goes by having the functionality of reducing the probability of the user himself falling. A great percentage of falls exists when the cane is used, in spite of its main objective to be to give support to the user. The cane is a common and plenty object known by the people and it should have a function more relevance in the life of these, that is, to prevent the falls better. With the existence of several technology types it is incomprehensible to verify that the human gait aids more available on the market do not provide more safety. It was verified that the user when is in unbalance support more weight in the cane, for consequence, the user may fall due to the support lack. For not happen that, it was concluded by the authors that the best solution would be to fasten the base of the cane to the floor when the user felt in unbalance. Like this, in this work, it was conceived a prototype that fix to the floor through vacuum suckers.

This study aimed to introduce a new suspension system that is capable of increasing the amputee’s satisfaction in terms of locking the residual limb inside the prosthetic socket. This paper describes the design and development phases carried out to optimize the final solution. The design system was based on the amputee’s needs and the requirements of prosthetic suspension systems. The final solution is a combination of a guiding and fixation system, to overcome some of the reported problems with the current systems, presenting a new simple suspension method that improves the donning and doffing of prosthesis. The new suspension system is a good alternative system to improve the life quality of amputees with lower activity level on the daily basis and, consequently, ease their rehabilitation., info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

This work addresses the field of the artificial devices that replace a missing body limb, particularly the prosthesis used upon a transtibial (TT) amputation, also known as ankle-foot prosthesis. A major challenge in designing an ankle-foot prosthesis lies in synthesizing a mechanism that will functionally mimic the missing part of an anatomical leg and, therefore, restoring the normal gait of the amputee. This way, it will be discussed and presented the requirements for a TT prosthesis, the steps that lead to the primary sketches of the prosthetic model and its main mechanism. This work constitutes a preliminary research in the field of the bionic TT prosthesis., This work is supported by the FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia - with the scholarship reference SFRH / BD/102659/2014, the reference project UID/EEA/04436/2013, by FEDER funds through the COMPETE 2020 - Programa Operacional Competitividade e Internacionalização (POCI) - with the reference project POCI-01-0145-FEDER-006941. Data communication is essential in any mechatronic system or product. It allows for devices to communicate with one another, for a more efficient and self-regulating system. To effectively rely on the communication between devices, the communication must firsts be tested and evaluated for errors and correct data transmission. Sensors and sensor data addresses can easily be switched and when a device is communicating with another, it is imperative that the correct sensor data is transmitted when a slave device receives a signal to do so. If this condition is not verified, the master device could be receiving wrong signals and coincidently sending alerts or warning messages to the user. In more extreme cases the device can enter an emergency shutdown situation and fail to restart. The objective of this work is to study, design and develop a software device that allows the user to simulate, evaluate and verify the Modbus communication between the Platform Management System (PMS) of a ship and the main equipment on board. The PMS is the onboard static master device that displays all the received data to the ship’s captain for analysis. This work focuses in particular on a ship's generators, where the available signals will be assessed. The signals, stipulated in the equipment’s specification documents, are transmitted directly from the equipment and are then received by the PMS. The PMS and the onboard equipment are programmed by various entities, of which, can all make mistakes while programming and therefor, the sensor and warning names and messages are not coherent with the corresponding values., info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

A proper suspension system influence the overall satisfaction of a lower limb ¬amputee on the daily basis. The present study aimed to establish the main parameters needed to evaluate and support the advantages of the new proposed suspension system by reviewing the literature related with amputee’s satisfaction. Eleven studies were select and detailed analyzed. Most of the mentioned studies used Prosthesis Evaluation Questionnaire (PEQ) as a method to classify the amputee’s satisfaction in different domains. Several studies pointed out pistoning and easy donning and doffing as the main parameters that addresses the amputee’s satisfaction with the currently available suspension systems. Amputees had a general preference for suspension systems that have an easy donning and doffing. However, the current studies do not explore the impact of the amputee’s characteristics on their satisfaction with the suspension system. The authors believe that amputee’s characteristics such as age, activity level, duration of prosthetic use, skin quality of the residual limb and hand functionality can influence the selection of the suspension system. Further research is still needed to objectively define the clinical parameters for the selection of the most adequate suspension system. Therefore the research should be carried out using a homogenous study group to perceive the advantages, drawbacks and problems using different suspension systems and, consequently, to understand the full potential of the suspension system proposed by the authors., info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion
