The master thesis first addresses the question of the reasons for which the behavior called "phubbing" is exhibited, using a qualitative approach. Afterwards, factors are formed from the reasons in order to examine their correlation with personality traits.

This project aims to replicate the findings of the experimental manipulation study from Margolis & Lyubomirsky (2020) under modified experimental conditions. In the behavior experiment of this study participants will be instructed to behave more extroverted than usual for one week and to behave more introverted than usual for another week in the first condition. Participants in the second condition should behave the other way around (e.g. at first more introverted, then more extroverted). In comparison with the investigation of Margolis & Lyubomirsky (2020) the experimental conditions were modified insomuch as each instruction for extroverted or introverted behavior is described in a narrower way than the authors did. The goal oft this approach is to investigate which effects do such an experimental manipulation of extraverted (introverted) behavior has on wellbeing and to what extent these results can replicate the results of Margolis & Lyubomirsky (2020).

The present article reports the results of a meta-analysis of nine student replication projects of Elliot et al.’s (2010) findings from Experiment 3, that women were more attracted to photographs of men with red borders (total n = 640). The eight student projects were part of the Collaborative Replication and Education Project (CREP; https://osf.io/wfc6u/), a research crowdsourcing project for undergraduate students. All replications were reviewed by experts to ensure high quality data, and were pre-registered prior to data collection. Results of this meta-analysis showed no effect of red on attractiveness ratings for either perceived attractiveness (mean ratings difference = –0.07, 95% CI [–0.31, 0.16]) or sexual attractiveness (mean ratings difference = –0.06, 95% CI [–0.36, 0.24]); this null result held with and without Elliot et al.’s (2010) data included in analyses. Exploratory analyses examining whether being in a relationship moderated the effect of color on attractiveness ratings also produced null results.

Results of this meta-analysis showed no effect of red on attractiveness ratings; this null result held with and without Elliot et al.’s (2010) data included in analyses. This study investigated the accuracy of gender-specific stereotypes about movie-genre preferences for 17 genres. In Study 1, female and male participants rated the extent to which 17 movie genres are preferred by women or men. In Study 2, another sample of female and male participants rated their own preference for each genre. There were three notable results. First, Study 1 revealed the existence of gender stereotypes for the majority of genres (i.e., for 15 of 17 genres). Second, Study 2 revealed the existence of actual gender differences in preferences for the majority of genres (i.e., for 11 of 17 genres). Third, in order to assess the accuracy of gender stereotypes on movie preferences, we compared the results of both studies and found that the majority of gender stereotypes were accurate in direction, but inaccurate in size. In particular, the stereotypes overestimated actual gender differences for the majority of movie genres (i.e., 10 of 17). Practical and theoretical implications of these findings are discussed.

The present article focuses on the role of situational factors - such as the color red - and their influence on what humans notice in others. Humans form impressions of others instantly. These impressions are predominantly based on physical appearance, which is part due to a person’s search for indicators of a potential partner’s fitness. Attractive individuals are associated with all sorts of positive qualities, whereas their less attractive counterparts are less favorably depicted. This perception process of physical attractiveness is associated with health in male and female faces, and from an evolutionary point of view, serves the survival and the reproductive success of the perceiver. The meaning of the color red for approach and avoidance behavior is demonstrated in a recent study, which shows that women’s use (or avoidance) of red clothing, accessories, and make-up may serve as a subtle and strategic indicator of (missing) sexual interest.
