Abstract

Many companies struggle with large amounts of legacy software that is difficult to maintain and to extend. Refactoring legacy code typically requires large efforts and introduces serious risks because often crucial business assets are hidden in legacy components. We investigate the support of formal techniques for the rejuvenation of legacy embedded software, concentrating on control components. Model learning and equivalence checking are used to improve a new implementation of a legacy control component. Model learning is applied to both the old and the new implementation. The resulting models are compared using an equivalence check of a model checker. We report about our experiences with this approach at Philips. By gradually increasing the set of input stimuli, we obtained implementations of a power control service for which the learned behaviour is equivalent.

Abstract

Two Domain Specific Languages (DSLs) have been developed to improve the development of a power control component of interventional X-ray systems of Philips. Configuration files and test cases are generated from instances of these DSLs. To increase the confidence in these instances and the generators, formal models have been generated to analyse DSL instances and to crosscheck the results of the generators. A DSL instance serves as a single source from which the implementation and the formal analysis models are generated. In this way, it is easy to maintain the formal support in case of changes and for new product releases. We report about our experiences with this approach in a real development project at Philips.

Abstract

To improve the design of a power control unit at Philips, two Domain Specific Languages (DSLs) have been used. The first DSL provides a concise and readable notation for the essential state transitions. It is used to generate both configuration files and analysis models. In addition, we also generate instances of a second DSL which represents test traces. This second DSL is used to generate test cases for the power control unit. The use of DSLs not only improved productivity, but also the quality of the configuration files and the test set. cop. 2015, IEEE.

Abstract

A parental history of experiencing child maltreatment is an important risk factor in several etiological theories of child maltreatment. In the past, two reviews have been conducted on the available evidence for intergenerational continuity in child maltreatment, but were only qualitative in nature. Therefore, the present review aimed to provide a quantitative summary of the current knowledge on intergenerational transmission of child maltreatment. In our 3-level random-effects meta-analysis, we included 84 studies reporting on 285 effect sizes and found a medium summary effect of r = 0.289; 95% CI [0.257, 0.337], with significant variation in effect sizes within (level 2) and between (level 3) studies. This implies that in families of parents who experienced maltreatment in their own childhood, the odds of child maltreatment are almost three times the odds of child maltreatment in families of parents without a history of experiencing child maltreatment (OR = 2.990). However, as indications for bias were found, caution is warranted in interpreting this effect. Moderator analyses revealed that the effect of intergenerational transmission was the smallest in children who experienced physical abuse. Further, study quality was negatively associated with effect size magnitude. We highlight the need for an improvement in quality of primary research, and discuss implications of our findings for clinical practice., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.)
