1. Highly Adaptive Ridge

Abstract: In this paper we propose the Highly Adaptive Ridge (HAR): a regression method that achieves a $n^{-1/3}$ dimension-free L2 convergence rate in the class of right-continuous functions with square-integrable sectional derivatives. This is a large nonparametric function class that is particularly appropriate for tabular data. HAR is exactly kernel ridge regression with a specific data-adaptive kernel based on a saturated zero-order tensor-product spline basis expansion. We use simulation and real data to confirm our theory. We demonstrate empirical performance better than state-of-the-art algorithms for small datasets in particular.

2. Refined Gromov-Witten invariants

Abstract: We study the enumerative geometry of stable maps to Calabi-Yau 5-folds $Z$ with a group action preserving the Calabi-Yau form. In the central case $Z=X \times \mathbb{C}^2$, where $X$ is a Calabi-Yau 3-fold with a group action scaling the holomorphic volume form non-trivially, we conjecture that the disconnected equivariant Gromov-Witten generating series of $Z$ returns the Nekrasov-Okounkov equivariant K-theoretic PT partition function of $X$ and, under suitable rigidity conditions, its refined BPS index. We show that in the unrefined limit the conjecture reproduces known statements about the higher genus Gromov-Witten theory of $X$; we prove it for $X$ the resolved conifold; and we establish a refined cycle-level local/relative correspondence for local del Pezzo surfaces, implying the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit of the conjecture when $X$ is the local projective plane. We further establish B-model physics predictions of Huang-Klemm for refined higher genus mirror symmetry for local $\mathbb{P}^2$. In particular, we prove that our refined Gromov-Witten generating series obey extended holomorphic anomaly equations, are quasi-modular functions of $\Gamma_1(3)$, have leading asymptotics at the conifold point given by the logarithm of the Barnes double-Gamma function, and satisfy a version of the higher genus Crepant Resolution Correspondence with the refined orbifold Gromov-Witten theory of $[\mathbb{C}^3/\mu_3]$. 3. Linear Recency Bias During Training Improves Transformers' Fit to Reading Times

Abstract: Recent psycholinguistic research has compared human reading times to surprisal estimates from language models to study the factors shaping human sentence processing difficulty. Previous studies have shown a strong fit between surprisal values from Transformers and reading times. However, standard Transformers work with a lossless representation of the entire previous linguistic context, unlike models of human language processing that include memory decay. To bridge this gap, this paper evaluates a modification of the Transformer model that uses ALiBi (Press et al., 2022), a recency bias added to attention scores. Surprisal estimates with ALiBi show an improved fit to human reading times compared to a standard Transformer baseline. A subsequent analysis of attention heads suggests that ALiBi's mixture of slopes -- which determine the rate of memory decay in each attention head -- may play a role in the improvement by helping models with ALiBi to track different kinds of linguistic dependencies.

4. Mesoscale properties of biomolecular condensates emerging from protein chain dynamics

Abstract: Biomolecular condensates form by phase separation of biological polymers. The cellular functions of the resulting membraneless organelles are closely linked to their physical properties over a wide range of length- and timescales: From the nanosecond dynamics of individual molecules and their interactions, to the microsecond translational diffusion of molecules in the condensates, to their viscoelastic properties at the mesoscopic scale. However, it has remained unclear how to quantitatively link these properties across scales. Here we address this question by combining single-molecule fluorescence, correlation spectroscopy, microrheology, and large-scale molecular dynamics simulations on different condensates that are formed by complex coacervation and span about two orders of magnitude in viscosity and their dynamics at the molecular scale. Remarkably, we find that the absolute timescale of protein chain dynamics in the dense phases can be quantitatively and accurately related to translational diffusion and condensate viscosities by Rouse theory of polymer solutions including entanglement. The simulations indicate that the observed wide range of dynamics arises from different contact lifetimes between amino acid residues, which in the mean-field description of the polymer model cause differences in the friction acting on the chains. These results suggest that remarkably simple physical principles can relate the mesoscale properties of biomolecular condensates to their dynamics at the nanoscale.

Abstract: We present results from a search for X-ray/gamma-ray counterparts of gravitational-wave (GW) candidates from the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) network using the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT). The search includes 636 GW candidates received in low latency, 86 of which have been confirmed by the offline analysis and included in the third cumulative Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalogs (GWTC-3). Targeted searches were carried out on the entire GW sample using the maximum--likelihood NITRATES pipeline on the BAT data made available via the GUANO infrastructure. We do not detect any significant electromagnetic emission that is temporally and spatially coincident with any of the GW candidates. We report flux upper limits in the 15-350 keV band as a function of sky position for all the catalog candidates. For GW candidates where the Swift-BAT false alarm rate is less than 10$^{-3}$ Hz, we compute the GW--BAT joint false alarm rate. Finally, the derived Swift-BAT upper limits are used to infer constraints on the putative electromagnetic emission associated with binary black hole mergers., Comment: 50 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

6. Layer-Dependent Charge State Lifetime of Single Se Vacancies in WSe$_2$

Abstract: Defect engineering in two-dimensional semiconductors has been exploited to tune the optoelectronic properties and introduce new quantum states in the band gap. Chalcogen vacancies in transition metal dichalcogenides in particular have been found to strongly impact charge carrier concentration and mobility in 2D transistors as well as feature sub-gap emission and single-photon response. In this letter, we investigate the layer-dependent charge state lifetime of Se vacancies in WSe$_2$. In one monolayer WSe$_2$, we observe ultrafast charge transfer from the lowest unoccupied orbital of the top Se vacancy to the graphene substrate within (1.0 $\pm$ 0.2) ps measured via the current saturation in scanning tunneling approach curves. For Se vacancies decoupled by TMD multilayers, we find a sub-exponential increase of the charge lifetime from (62 $\pm$ 14) ps in bilayer to few nanoseconds in four-layer WSe$_2$, alongside a reduction of the defect state binding energy. Additionally, we attribute the continuous suppression and energy shift of the dI/dV in-gap defect state resonances at very close tip--sample distances to a current saturation effect. Our results provide a key measure of the layer-dependent charge transfer rate of chalcogen vacancies in TMDs.

7. Leading Whitespaces of Language Models' Subword Vocabulary Pose a Confound for Calculating Word Probabilities

Abstract: Predictions of word-by-word conditional probabilities from Transformer-based language models are often evaluated to model the incremental processing difficulty of human readers. In this paper, we argue that there is a confound posed by the most common method of aggregating subword probabilities of such language models into word probabilities. This is due to the fact that tokens in the subword vocabulary of most language models have leading whitespaces and therefore do not naturally define stop probabilities of words. We first prove that this can result in distributions over word probabilities that sum to more than one, thereby violating the axiom that $\mathsf{P}(\Omega) = 1$. This property results in a misallocation of word-by-word surprisal, where the unacceptability of the end of the current word is incorrectly carried over to the next word. Additionally, this implicit prediction of word boundaries incorrectly models psycholinguistic experiments where human subjects directly observe upcoming word boundaries. We present a simple decoding technique to reaccount the probability of the trailing whitespace into that of the current word, which resolves this confound. 8. Data-Adaptive Identification of Subpopulations Vulnerable to Chemical Exposures using Stochastic Interventions

Abstract: In environmental epidemiology, identifying subpopulations vulnerable to chemical exposures and those who may benefit differently from exposure-reducing policies is essential. For instance, sex-specific vulnerabilities, age, and pregnancy are critical factors for policymakers when setting regulatory guidelines. However, current semi-parametric methods for heterogeneous treatment effects are often limited to binary exposures and function as black boxes, lacking clear, interpretable rules for subpopulation-specific policy interventions. This study introduces a novel method using cross-validated targeted minimum loss-based estimation (TMLE) paired with a data-adaptive target parameter strategy to identify subpopulations with the most significant differential impact from simulated policy interventions that reduce exposure. Our approach is assumption-lean, allowing for the integration of machine learning while still yielding valid confidence intervals. We demonstrate the robustness of our methodology through simulations and application to NHANES data. Our analysis of NHANES data for persistent organic pollutants on leukocyte telomere length (LTL) identified age as the maximum effect modifier. Specifically, we found that exposure to 3,3',4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl (pcnb) consistently had a differential impact on LTL, with a one standard deviation reduction in exposure leading to a more pronounced increase in LTL among younger populations compared to older ones. We offer our method as an open-source software package, \texttt{EffectXshift}, enabling researchers to investigate the effect modification of continuous exposures. The \texttt{EffectXshift} package provides clear and interpretable results, informing targeted public health interventions and policy decisions.

9. WIYN Open Cluster Study. XC. Barium Surface Abundances of Blue Straggler Stars in the Open Clusters NGC 7789 and M67

Abstract: We investigate barium (Ba) abundances in blue straggler stars (BSSs) in two open clusters, NGC 7789 (1.6 Gyr) and M67 (4 Gyr), as signatures of asymptotic-giant-branch (AGB) mass transfer. We combine our findings with previous Ba abundance analyses in NGC 6819 (2.5 Gyr) and NGC 188 (7 Gyr). Out of 35 BSSs studied in NGC 7789, NGC 6819, and M67, 15 (43$\pm$11%) are Ba-enriched; no BSSs in NGC 188 are Ba-enriched. The Ba abundances of enriched BSSs show an anticorrelation with cluster age, ranging from an enrichment of [Ba/Fe]$\sim$+1.5 dex in NGC 7789 to [Ba/Fe]$\sim$+1.0 dex in M67. The Ba-enriched BSSs all lie in the same region of the HR diagram, irrespective of cluster age or distance from the main-sequence turnoff. Our data suggest a link between AGB donor mass and mass-transfer efficiency in BSSs, in that less massive AGB donors tend to undergo more conservative mass transfer. We find that 40$\pm$16% of the Ba-enriched BSSs are in longer-period spectroscopic binaries with orbital periods less than 5000 days. Those Ba-enriched BSSs that do not exhibit radial-velocity variability suggest AGB mass-transfer in wide binaries by either wind mass transfer or wind Roche-lobe overflow. Given the preponderance of long orbital periods in the BSSs of M67 and NGC 188 and the frequency of Ba enrichment in NGC 7789, NGC 6819, and M67, it may be that AGB mass transfer is the dominant mechanism of BSS formation in open clusters older than 1 Gyr., Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables. Abstract: The application of clustering algorithms to the Gaia astrometric catalog has revolutionized our census of stellar populations in the Milky Way, including the discovery of many new, dispersed structures. We focus on one such structure, Theia 456 (COIN-Gaia-13), a loosely bound collection of ~320 stars spanning ~120 pc that has previously been shown to exhibit kinematic, chemical, and gyrochronal coherency, indicating a common origin. We obtain follow-up radial velocities and supplement these with Gaia astrometry to perform an in-depth dynamical analysis of Theia 456. By integrating stellar orbits through a Milky Way potential, we find the currently dispersed structure coalesced into a small cluster in the past. Via Bayesian modeling, we derive a kinematic age of 245 +/- 3 Myr (statistical), a half-mass radius of 9 +/- 2 pc, and an initial one-dimensional velocity dispersion of 0.14 +/- 0.02 km/s. Our results are entirely independent of model isochrones, details of stellar evolution, and internal cluster dynamics, and the statistical precision in our age derivation rivals that of the most precise age-dating techniques known today, though our imperfect knowledge of the Milky Way potential and simple spherical model for Theia 456 at birth add additional uncertainties. Using posterior predictive checking, we confirm these results are robust under reasonable variations to the Milky Way potential. Such low density structures that are disrupted by the Galactic tides before virializing may be ubiquitous, signifying that Theia 456 is a valuable benchmark for studying the dynamical history of stellar populations in the Milky Way., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. 11. Bridging Binarization: Causal Inference with Dichotomized Continuous Exposures

Abstract: The average treatment effect (ATE) is a common parameter estimated in causal inference literature, but it is only defined for binary treatments. Thus, despite concerns raised by some researchers, many studies seeking to estimate the causal effect of a continuous treatment create a new binary treatment variable by dichotomizing the continuous values into two categories. In this paper, we affirm binarization as a statistically valid method for answering causal questions about continuous treatments by showing the equivalence between the binarized ATE and the difference in the average outcomes of two specific modified treatment policies. These policies impose cut-offs corresponding to the binarized treatment variable and assume preservation of relative self-selection. Relative self-selection is the ratio of the probability density of an individual having an exposure equal to one value of the continuous treatment variable versus another. The policies assume that, for any two values of the treatment variable with non-zero probability density after the cut-off, this ratio will remain unchanged. Through this equivalence, we clarify the assumptions underlying binarization and discuss how to properly interpret the resulting estimator. Additionally, we introduce a new target parameter that can be computed after binarization that considers the status-quo world. We argue that this parameter addresses more relevant causal questions than the traditional binarized ATE parameter. Finally, we present a simulation study to illustrate the implications of these assumptions when analyzing data and to demonstrate how to correctly implement estimators of the parameters discussed.

Abstract: A two-component Looijenga pair is a rational smooth projective surface with an anticanonical divisor consisting of two transversally intersecting curves. We establish an all-genus correspondence between the logarithmic Gromov-Witten theory of a two-component Looijenga pair and open Gromov-Witten theory of a toric Calabi-Yau threefold geometrically engineered from the surface geometry. This settles a conjecture of Bousseau, Brini and van Garrel in the case of two boundary components. We also explain how the correspondence implies BPS integrality for the logarithmic invariants and provides a new means for computing them via the topological vertex method., Comment: 27 pages. Abstract: Among the various candidates for dark matter (DM), ultralight vector DM can be probed by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors through the measurement of oscillating length changes in the arm cavities. In this context, KAGRA has a unique feature due to differing compositions of its mirrors, enhancing the signal of vector DM in the length change in the auxiliary channels. Here we present the result of a search for $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson DM using the KAGRA data from auxiliary length channels during the first joint observation run together with GEO600. By applying our search pipeline, which takes into account the stochastic nature of ultralight DM, upper bounds on the coupling strength between the $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson and ordinary matter are obtained for a range of DM masses. While our constraints are less stringent than those derived from previous experiments, this study demonstrates the applicability of our method to the lower-mass vector DM search, which is made difficult in this measurement by the short observation time compared to the auto-correlation time scale of DM., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

18. Frequency Explains the Inverse Correlation of Large Language Models' Size, Training Data Amount, and Surprisal's Fit to Reading Times

Abstract: Recent studies have shown that as Transformer-based language models become larger and are trained on very large amounts of data, the fit of their surprisal estimates to naturalistic human reading times degrades. The current work presents a series of analyses showing that word frequency is a key explanatory factor underlying these two trends. First, residual errors from four language model families on four corpora show that the inverse correlation between model size and fit to reading times is the strongest on the subset of least frequent words, which is driven by excessively accurate predictions of larger model variants. Additionally, training dynamics reveal that during later training steps, all model variants learn to predict rare words and that larger model variants do so more accurately, which explains the detrimental effect of both training data amount and model size on fit to reading times. Finally, a feature attribution analysis demonstrates that larger model variants are able to accurately predict rare words based on both an effectively longer context window size as well as stronger local associations compared to smaller model variants. Taken together, these results indicate that Transformer-based language models' surprisal estimates diverge from human-like expectations due to the superhumanly complex associations they learn for predicting rare words., Comment: EACL 2024

Abstract: Mediation analysis is a statistical approach that can provide insights regarding the intermediary processes by which an intervention or exposure affects a given outcome. Mediation analyses rose to prominence, particularly in social science research, with the publication of the seminal paper by Baron and Kenny and is now commonly applied in many research disciplines, including health services research. Despite the growth in popularity, applied researchers may still encounter challenges in terms of conducting mediation analyses in practice. In this paper, we provide an overview of conceptual and methodological challenges that researchers face when conducting mediation analyses. Specifically, we discuss the following key challenges: (1) Conceptually differentiating mediators from other third variables, (2) Extending beyond the single mediator context, (3) Identifying appropriate datasets in which measurement and temporal ordering supports the hypothesized mediation model, (4) Selecting mediation effects that reflect the scientific question of interest, (5) Assessing the validity of underlying assumptions of no omitted confounders, (6) Addressing measurement error regarding the mediator, and (7) Clearly reporting results from mediation analyses. We discuss each challenge and highlight ways in which the applied researcher can approach these challenges.

Abstract: Substitutionally doped transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are the next step towards realizing TMD-based field effect transistors, sensors, and quantum photonic devices. Here, we report on the influence of Re concentration on charge doping and defect formation in MoS2 monolayers grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. Re-MoS2 films can exhibit reduced sulfur-site defects; however, as the Re concentration approaches 2 atom%, there is significant clustering of Re in the MoS2. Ab Initio calculations indicate that the transition from isolated Re atoms to Re clusters increases the ionization energy of Re dopants, thereby reducing Re-doping efficacy. Using photoluminescence spectroscopy, we show that Re dopant clustering creates defect states that trap photogenerated excitons within the MoS2 lattice. These results provide insight into how the local concentration of metal dopants affect carrier density, defect formation, and exciton recombination in TMDs, which can aid the development of future TMD-based devices with improved electronic and photonic properties., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

22. Nanosecond chain dynamics of single-stranded nucleic acids

Abstract: The conformational dynamics of single-stranded nucleic acids are fundamental for nucleic acid folding and function. However, their elementary chain dynamics have been difficult to resolve experimentally. Here we employ a combination of single-molecule F\"orster resonance energy transfer, nanosecond fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, fluorescence lifetime analysis, and nanophotonic enhancement to determine the conformational ensembles and rapid chain dynamics of short single-stranded nucleic acids in solution. To interpret the experimental results in terms of end-to-end distance dynamics, we utilize the hierarchical chain growth approach, simple polymer models, and refinement with Bayesian inference of ensembles to generate structural ensembles that closely align with the experimental data. The resulting chain reconfiguration times are exceedingly rapid, in the 10-ns range. Solvent viscosity-dependent measurements indicate that these dynamics of single-stranded nucleic acids exhibit negligible internal friction and are thus dominated by solvent friction. Our results provide a detailed view of the conformational distributions and rapid dynamics of single-stranded nucleic acids.

Abstract: Segmenting the boundary between tumor and healthy tissue during surgical cancer resection poses a significant challenge. In recent years, Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) combined with Machine Learning (ML) has emerged as a promising solution. However, due to the extensive information contained within the spectral domain, most ML approaches primarily classify individual HSI (super-)pixels, or tiles, without taking into account their spatial context. In this paper, we propose an improved methodology that leverages the spatial context of tiles for more robust and smoother segmentation. To address the irregular shapes of tiles, we utilize Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) to propagate context information across neighboring regions. The features for each tile within the graph are extracted using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), which is trained simultaneously with the subsequent GNN. Moreover, we incorporate local image quality metrics into the loss function to enhance the training procedure's robustness against low-quality regions in the training images. We demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method using a clinical ex vivo dataset consisting of 51 HSI images from 30 patients. Despite the limited dataset, the GNN-based model significantly outperforms context-agnostic approaches, accurately distinguishing between healthy and tumor tissues, even in images from previously unseen patients. Furthermore, we show that our carefully designed loss function, accounting for local image quality, results in additional improvements. Our findings demonstrate that context-aware GNN algorithms can robustly find tumor demarcations on HSI images, ultimately contributing to better surgery success and patient outcome., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: A bicyclic pair is a smooth surface equipped with a pair of smooth divisors intersecting in two reduced points. Resolutions of self-nodal curves constitute an important special case. We investigate the logarithmic Gromov-Witten theory of bicyclic pairs. We establish correspondences with local Gromov-Witten theory and open Gromov-Witten theory in all genera, a correspondence with orbifold Gromov-Witten theory in genus zero, and correspondences between all-genus refined Gopakumar-Vafa invariants and refined quiver Donaldson-Thomas invariants. For self-nodal curves in $\mathbb{P}(1,1,r)$ we obtain closed formulae for the genus zero invariants and relate these to the invariants of local curves. We also establish a conceptual relationship between invariants relative a self-nodal plane cubic and invariants relative a smooth plane cubic. Abstract: Outsourcing of activities is common and increasing in the pharmaceutical industry, not only for clinical trial conduct, or other trial related aspects but also for biostatistics and data management. This raises the question of whether and how sponsors retain the capability to select and to control the CRO(s) involved and what biometrical expertise still has to be present in the sponsor company to ensure adequate oversight. Not only in the case of partial outsourcing but especially in the case of complete outsourcing sponsors have to find the right balance between a complete “hands off” approach and a resource intensive in-house shadowing of activities to fulfil the requirements.In order to answer these questions, a survey was conducted among the German vfa member companies. This article discusses the specific oversight topics for the outsourcing of data management and biostatistics services, e.g. requirements for data quality, coding, and statistical analyses.This study shows that the majority of the companies use the same CRO for biometrical services as for rest of study services and that there is a preferred provider for these services in 65% of the companies. There are established, specific requirements for the main deliverables of biometrical services: For coding and data standards these are predominantly industry standards (MedDRA, CDISC). For statistic outputs and data quality mainly sponsor standards are used. The adherence to the requirements is mainly checked via spot-checks, and standardized checklists are mainly used for checking data standards. Generally, in all companies participating in the survey, there is an awareness of the necessity of biometrical oversight. Although not necessarily perfect yet, all companies took measures to ensure good biometrical oversight and there is a common understanding, that it is not an option to resign from biometrical oversight.

Abstract: Despite the growing number of confident binary black hole coalescences observed through gravitational waves so far, the astrophysical origin of these binaries remains uncertain. Orbital eccentricity is one of the clearest tracers of binary formation channels. Identifying binary eccentricity, however, remains challenging due to the limited availability of gravitational waveforms that include effects of eccentricity. Here, we present observational results for a waveform-independent search sensitive to eccentric black hole coalescences, covering the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO and Virgo detectors. We identified no new high-significance candidates beyond those that were already identified with searches focusing on quasi-circular binaries. We determine the sensitivity of our search to high-mass (total mass $M>70$ $M_\odot$) binaries covering eccentricities up to 0.3 at 15 Hz orbital frequency, and use this to compare model predictions to search results. Assuming all detections are indeed quasi-circular, for our fiducial population model, we place an upper limit for the merger rate density of high-mass binaries with eccentricities $0 < e \leq 0.3$ at $0.33$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$ at 90\% confidence level., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: The functionality of atomic quantum emitters is intrinsically linked to their host lattice coordination. Structural distortions that spontaneously break the lattice symmetry strongly impact their optical emission properties and spin-photon interface. Here we report on the direct imaging of charge state-dependent symmetry breaking of two prototypical atomic quantum emitters in mono- and bilayer MoS$_2$ by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and non-contact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM). By substrate chemical gating different charge states of sulfur vacancies (Vac$_\text{S}$) and substitutional rhenium dopants (Re$_\text{Mo}$) can be stabilized. Vac$_\text{S}^{-1}$ as well as Re$_\text{Mo}^{0}$ and Re$_\text{Mo}^{-1}$ exhibit local lattice distortions and symmetry-broken defect orbitals attributed to a Jahn-Teller effect (JTE) and pseudo-JTE, respectively. By mapping the electronic and geometric structure of single point defects, we disentangle the effects of spatial averaging, charge multistability, configurational dynamics, and external perturbations that often mask the presence of local symmetry breaking.

34. Gotta catch 'em all: Modeling All Discrete Alternatives for Industrial Energy System Transitions

Abstract: Industrial decision-makers often base decisions on mathematical optimization models to achieve cost-efficient design solutions in energy transitions. However, since a model can only approximate reality, the optimal solution is not necessarily the best real-world energy system. Exploring near-optimal design spaces, e.g., by the Modeling All Alternatives (MAA) method, provides a more holistic view of decision alternatives beyond the cost-optimal solution. However, the MAA method misses out on discrete in-vestment decisions. Incorporating such discrete investment decisions is crucial when modeling industrial energy systems. Our work extends the MAA method by integrating discrete design decisions. We optimize the design and operation of an industrial energy system transformation using a mixed-integer linear program. First, we explore the continuous, near-optimal design space by applying the MAA method. Thereafter, we sample all discrete design alternatives from the continuous, near-optimal design space. In a case study, we apply our method to identify all near-optimal design alternatives of an industrial energy system. We find 128 near-optimal design alternatives where costs are allowed to increase to a maximum of one percent offering decision-makers more flexibility in their investment decisions. 35. Unveiling Causal Mediation Pathways in High-Dimensional Mixed Exposures: A Data-Adaptive Target Parameter Strategy

Abstract: Mediation analysis in causal inference typically concentrates on one binary exposure, using deterministic interventions to split the average treatment effect into direct and indirect effects through a single mediator. Yet, real-world exposure scenarios often involve multiple continuous exposures impacting health outcomes through varied mediation pathways, which remain unknown a priori. Addressing this complexity, we introduce NOVAPathways, a methodological framework that identifies exposure-mediation pathways and yields unbiased estimates of direct and indirect effects when intervening on these pathways. By pairing data-adaptive target parameters with stochastic interventions, we offer a semi-parametric approach for estimating causal effects in the context of high-dimensional, continuous, binary, and categorical exposures and mediators. In our proposed cross-validation procedure, we apply sequential semi-parametric regressions to a parameter-generating fold of the data, discovering exposure-mediation pathways. We then use stochastic interventions on these pathways in an estimation fold of the data to construct efficient estimators of natural direct and indirect effects using flexible machine learning techniques. Our estimator proves to be asymptotically linear under conditions necessitating n to the negative quarter consistency of nuisance function estimation. Simulation studies demonstrate the square root n consistency of our estimator when the exposure is quantized, whereas for truly continuous data, approximations in numerical integration prevent square root n consistency. Our NOVAPathways framework, part of the open-source SuperNOVA package in R, makes our proposed methodology for high-dimensional mediation analysis available to researchers, paving the way for the application of modified exposure policies which can delivery more informative statistical results for public policy., Comment: 32 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables

Abstract: Background: Policy evaluation studies that assess how state-level policies affect health-related outcomes are foundational to health and social policy research. The relative ability of newer analytic methods to address confounding, a key source of bias in observational studies, has not been closely examined. Methods: We conducted a simulation study to examine how differing magnitudes of confounding affected the performance of four methods used for policy evaluations: (1) the two-way fixed effects (TWFE) difference-in-differences (DID) model; (2) a one-period lagged autoregressive (AR) model; (3) augmented synthetic control method (ASCM); and (4) the doubly robust DID approach with multiple time periods from Callaway-Sant'Anna (CSA). We simulated our data to have staggered policy adoption and multiple confounding scenarios (i.e., varying the magnitude and nature of confounding relationships). Results: Bias increased for each method: (1) as confounding magnitude increases; (2) when confounding is generated with respect to prior outcome trends (rather than levels), and (3) when confounding associations are nonlinear (rather than linear). The AR and ASCM have notably lower root mean squared error than the TWFE model and CSA approach for all scenarios; the exception is nonlinear confounding by prior trends, where CSA excels. Coverage rates are unreasonably high for ASCM (e.g., 100%), reflecting large model-based standard errors and wide confidence intervals in practice. Conclusions: Our simulation study indicated that no single method consistently outperforms the others. But a researcher's toolkit should include all methodological options. Abstract: Spin–orbit coupling forms the physical basis for quantum materials with non-trivial topology and potential spintronics applications. The Rashba interaction is a textbook model of spin–orbit interactions, with charge carriers undergoing linear, isotropic spin-splitting in momentum space. Recently, non-centrosymmetric semiconductors in the family BiTeX (X = Cl, Br, I) have been identified as exemplary Rashba materials due to the strong splitting of their bulk bands, yet a detailed investigation of their spin textures, and their relationships to local crystal symmetry, is currently lacking. We perform high-efficiency spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to directly image the spin texture of surface states of BiTeCl, and we find dramatic deviations from idealized behavior, including a reversal of the spin-polarization near the Fermi level. We show that this behavior can be described by higher-order contributions to the canonical Rashba model with the surface states localized to individual trilayers of the crystal. Due to the prominence of these effects near the Fermi level, they should have a strong impact on the spin-dependent transport of carriers.
