This study compares two district heating substation systems for implementation in rural district heating networks with non-retrofitted single- and two-family houses. The aim is to determine which system has the potential to provide lower return temperatures and/or lower power peak demand. A hardware-in-the-loop-test rig was utilized to measure the two district heating substations under real operation conditions. This experimental study demonstrates that load balancing of the district heating network is attainable with the district heating substation with storage. This is especially advantageous when there is a high demand for domestic hot water. Overall, both systems yield comparable return temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The potential of utilizing temperature‐variable district heating systems in rural areas was investigated. A local district heating system in Germany and the related project NATAR are briefly described; measurement data is evaluated. Operational experiences with a seasonal temperature reduction and consequent advantages for different heat generation systems and heat storages are discussed. The analysis of measurement data reveals a high optimization potential for solar thermal systems in case of an integration both into a low‐ and a high‐temperature storage. Furthermore, a combined heat‐and‐power plant in combination with a CO2 heat pump promises sector‐coupling potential and high electricity self‐consumption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The growing share of fluctuating renewable electricity production within the German energy system causes the increasing necessity for flexible consumers, producers, and storage technologies to balance supply and demand. District heating networks with combined heat and power units, Power-to-Heat applications, and thermal energy storage capacities can serve as one of these flexible options. In this context, a simulation model of the district heating network of the rural community Dollnstein, Germany, was built. With the residual load of different regional areas (Germany, Bavaria, Eichstätt, Dollnstein) it is investigated, how the heat generators can operate in an electricity market beneficial way. Two different control algorithms were evaluated: Due to a correlation between the residual loads and the CO2 emissions of the electricity mix, the CO2 savings achieved by this control algorithm are determined. Another way to operate electricity market beneficial is to consider the current CO2 emissions of each region. The main outcomes of this paper are, that there is a high potential for sector coupling by shifting the operation times of a CHP and a heat pump according to the residual load. The electricity demand of the heat pump can be met in terms of low CO2 emissions of the electricity mix, while the CHP can replace electricity with high CO2 emissions. These results can be improved, by considering not the residual load but the current CO2 emissions in the control algorithm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In vivo haploid induction (HI) triggered by pollination with special intraspecific genotypes, called inducers, is unique to Zea mays L. within the plant kingdom and has revolutionized maize breeding during the last decade. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying HI in maize are still unclear. To investigate the genetic basis of HI, we developed a new approach for genome-wide association studies (GWAS), termed conditional haplotype extension (CHE) test that allows detection of selective sweeps even under almost perfect confounding of population structure and trait expression. Here, we applied this test to identify genomic regions required for HI expression and dissected the combined support interval (50.34 Mb) of the QTL qhir1, detected in a previous study, into two closely linked genomic segments relevant for HI expression. The first, termed qhir11 (0.54 Mb), comprises an already fine-mapped region but was not diagnostic for differentiating inducers and noninducers. The second segment, termed qhir12 (3.97 Mb), had a haplotype allele common to all 53 inducer lines but not found in any of the 1482 noninducers. By comparing resequencing data of one inducer with 14 noninducers, we detected in the qhir12 region three candidate genes involved in DNA or amino acid binding, however, none for qhir11. We propose that the CHE test can be utilized in introgression breeding and different fields of genetics to detect selective sweeps in heterogeneous genetic backgrounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gibberella ear rot ( GER) caused by Fusarium graminearum is a destructive disease in maize of temperate regions resulting in yield reduction and contamination by the mycotoxins deoxynivalenol ( DON) and zearalenone ( ZON). We wanted to analyse whether prediction of DON and ZON concentrations is feasible either by GER severity ratings or by near-infrared spectroscopy ( NIRS). We analysed 80 and 102 lines developed by backcrossing doubled-haploid lines from segregating populations to the resistant and susceptible parent, respectively, by artificial infection at three locations in Germany and France. Both backcross ( BC) populations differed substantially in their means for all traits with significant (P < 0.01) genotypic variances. DON and ZON concentrations measured by immunotests were significantly (P < 0.01) correlated with each other and with GER severity within each BC population (0.6 ≤ r ≤ 0.9, P < 0.01). DON concentration measured by immunotest and NIRS significantly correlated ( r ≈ 0.9, P < 0.01). In conclusion, DON and ZON concentrations could be reliably predicted by GER severity. Additional NIRS analysis of DON concentration might be useful for the positively selected fraction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
