Abstract: The development of innovative farming systems to reach new goals of agricultural sustainability needs new methods for efficiency assessment. DEXiPM-Grapevine© is a multicriteria assessment tool for overall sustainability of grapevine farming systems adapted from DEXiPM arable crops (Pelzer et al, 2012). DEXiPM-Grapevine© was implemented during the European PURE Project 2012-2015 (Integrated Pest Management (IPM) solutions in agriculture) in order to assess and compare various innovative grapevine systems. This model includes 65 basic attributes describing the cropping system, which are then combined into 97 aggregated attributes, designed to assess the economic, social and environmental performances. This model is based on expert knowledge and agricultural surveys, to define thresholds of classes for each attribute and the weighting of the aggregations. A guide helps users to adjust these parameter specific features due to local context. We tested DEXiPM-Grapevine© on innovativegrapevine systems, designed with low pesticides use, and experimented at field scale in the French EcoViti Network. We made bothex ante and ex post analyses of experimented systems in order to sort them and to adjust their strategies. Three main strategies ofpesticide reduction are explored: (i) IPM, (ii) alternative products, organic and biocontrol approach, (iii) pesticide-free croppingsystems based on new grapevine mildew resistant varieties. Seven prototypes are tested on INRA experimental farms in Angers(Loire Valley, center of France), Bordeaux (Atlantic region), and Montpellier (Mediterranean region). The first DEXiPMGrapevine© assessments show a high environmental performance of innovative biocontrol strategies, and new resistant varieties.However, IPM strategies have the best overall sustainability with better economic and social assessments. DEXiPM-Grapevine©supports the analysis of performances and helps to identify the strengths/weaknesses of the tested prototypes. This tool can be usedfor ex ante assessment to guide the designing of cropping systems. It can also enable to re-adjust the prototypes after fieldexperimentations. A third use for farmers' advisors is to help producers to modify their farming systems to enhance the sustainabilityof their farms., Mettre en oeuvre de nouvelles méthodes d’évaluation de la durabilité de systèmes viticoles est une étape indispensable pourconcevoir et développer des systèmes innovants qui répondent aux récents enjeux de l’agriculture durable. DEXiPM-Vigne© en estun exemple. Ce modèle d’évaluation multicritère de la durabilité de systèmes viticoles a été adapté de DEXiPM-Grandes culture(Pelzer et al., 2012).Conçu durant le projet européen PURE 2012-2015 (Solutions de Protection Intégrée des cultures - IPM),il permet d’évaluer et comparer des systèmes viticoles innovants en réelle rupture avec les systèmes actuels. Nousavons testé DEXiPM-Vigne© pour analyser les performances de systèmes viticoles innovants, à bas niveau d’intrantsphytosanitaires, conçus et expérimentés au sein du réseau français EcoViti qui porte cette démarche d’agronomie systémique.Des analyses ex ante et ex post ont été conduites pour trier et adapter les stratégies expérimentées. Trois voies principales deréduction des pesticides ont été testées : (i) IPM basé principalement sur l’efficience des méthodes de protection actuelles , (ii)utilisation de produits alternatifs, de l’AB et du biocontrôle, (iii) stratégie sans pesticides utilisant les nouvelles variétés résistantes aumildiou/oïdium. Sept prototypes sont testés actuellement par l’INRA à Angers (Val de Loire), Bordeaux (région atlantique) etMontpellier (region méditerranéenne). Les premières évaluations DEXiPM-Vigne© montrent des performances environnementalesélevées pour les stratégies basées sur le biocontrôle et les variétés résistantes. Les stratégies IPM ressortent cependant avec lameilleure durabilité globale, et une durabilité socio-économique plus élevée. DEXiPM-Vigne© accompagne l’analyse desperformances des systèmes viticoles et aide à l’identification des forces et des faiblesses des prototypes testés au champ. Cet outilpeut être utilisé dans une approche ex ante pour aider à la conception de systèmes viticoles, mais également pour les réajuster aprèsles premières expérimentations au champ. Il est également envisagé d’employer DEXIPM-Vigne comme outil d'accompagnementdes viticulteurs dans leur démarche de changements de pratiques en cohérence avec leurs objectifs de production

Abstract: 7 pages; International audience; Inherent to the cost of immunity, the immune system itself can exhibit tradeoffs between its arms. Phytophagous insects face a wide range of microbial and eukaryotic parasites, each activating different immune pathways that could compromise the activity of the others. Feeding larvae are primarily exposed to microbes, which growth is controlled by antibiotic secondary metabolites produced by the host plant. The resulting variation in abundance of microbes on plants is expected to differentially stimulate the insect antimicrobial immune defenses. Under the above tradeoff hypothesis, stimulation of the insect antimicrobial defenses is expected to compromise immune activity against eukaryote parasites. In the European grape berry moth, Eupoecilia ambiguella, immune effectors directed towards microbes are negatively correlated to those directed towards eukaryotic parasites among host plants. Here, we hypothesize this relationship is caused by a variable control of the microbial community among host plants by their antibiotic metabolites. To test this hypothesis, we first quantified antimicrobial activity in berries of several grape varieties. We then measured immune defenses of E. ambiguella larvae raised on artificial diets in which we mimicked levels of antimicrobial activity of grape berries using tetracycline to control the abundance of growing microbes. Another group of larvae was raised on artificial diets made of berry extracts only to control for the effect of nutrition. We found that controlling microbe abundance with tetracycline in diets did not explain variation in the immune function whereas the presence of berry extracts did. This suggests that variation in immune defenses of E. ambiguella among grape varieties is caused by nutritional difference among host plants rather than microbe abundance. Further study of the effects of berry compounds on larval immune parameters will be needed to explain the observed tradeoff among immune system components.

Abstract: International audience; The assessment of yield variability at the territory scale is often difficult due to the lack of knowledge on various factors involved, e.g., the agricultural practices of farmers and phenological calendars. Remote sensing can help to provide precise and timely information on crops particularly with the unprecedented amount of free Sentinel data within the Copernicus programme. This study focuses on the evaluation of the contribution of the new Sentinel 2 data to provide phenological information on rice cropping systems in the Camargue region in the South-Eastern France. Dense time series of data acquired at high spatial resolution (10m) were analyzed for 2016 and 2017 and were used to map rice, compute Leaf Area Index. Various methods combining remote sensing information were compared with two different crop models (STICS and SAFY) to assess the yields. The performances are discussed according to surveys made with farmers.

Abstract: International audience; Recent work has revealed that the Montagne Noire dome, located in the foreland of the Variscan belt (French Massif Central), contains a record of nearly coeval, late Variscan eclogitization and migmatization. Given these new results, it is important to understand the chronology of events that produced high-grade metamorphism and exhumation. Using U-Th-Pb dating of monazite, this study confirms ages of ~315–300 Ma for high-T metamorphism in the augen gneiss that makes up a large fraction of the Montagne Noire dome, and documents for the first time ~295 Ma monazite ages in compositionally varied fine-grained gneisses that form folded continuous layers within the core of the dome. The fine-grained gneiss layers are intensely sheared and are interpreted to have localized late, high-T deformation in the core of the dome. These sheared fine-grained gneisses form a network of shear zones that were kinematically linked to the extensional and strike-slip deformation zones that exhumed the Montagne Noire dome in a pull-apart (s.l.) domain. Continued deformation-recrystallization and fluid flow within these shear zones likely drove rejuvenation of monazite for ~5 million years after much of the melt had crystallized in the Montagne Noire dome.

Abstract: Multipartite viruses package their genomic segments independently and thus incur the risk of being unable to transmit their entire genome during host-to-host transmission if they undergo severe bottlenecks. In this paper, we estimated the bottleneck size during one infection cycle of Faba bean necrotic stunt virus (FBNSV), an octopartite nanovirus whose segments have been previously shown to converge to particular and unequal relative frequencies within host plants and aphid vectors. Two methods were used to derive this estimate, one based on the probability of transmission of the virus and the other based on the temporal evolution of the relative frequency of markers for two genomic segments, one frequent and one rare (segment N and S, respectively), both in plants and vectors. Our results show that FBNSV undergoes severe bottlenecks during aphid transmission. Further, even though the bottlenecks are always narrow under our experimental conditions, they slightly widen with the number of transmitting aphids. In particular, when several aphids are used for transmission, the bottleneck size of the segments is also affected by within-plant processes and, importantly, significantly differs across segments. These results indicate that genetic drift not only must be an important process affecting the evolution of these viruses but also that these effects vary across genomic segments and, thus, across viral genes, a rather unique and intriguing situation. We further discuss the potential consequences of our findings for the transmission of multipartite viruses. IMPORTANCE Multipartite viruses package their genomic segments in independent capsids. The most obvious cost of such genomic structure is the risk of losing at least one segment during host-to-host transmission. A theoretical study has shown that for nanoviruses, composed of 6 to 8 segments, hundreds of copies of each segment need to be transmitted to ensure that at least one copy of each segment was present in the host. These estimations seem to be very high compared to the size of the bottlenecks measured with other viruses. Here, we estimated the bottleneck size during one infection cycle of FBNSV, an octopartite nanovirus. We show that these bottlenecks are always narrow (few viral particles) and slightly widen with the number of transmitting aphids. These results contrast with theoretical predictions and illustrate the fact that a new conceptual framework is probably needed to understand the transmission of highly multipartite viruses.

Abstract: International audience; There is tremendous diversity of interactions between plants and other species. These relationships range from antagonism to mutualism. Interactions of plants with members of their ecological community can lead to a profound metabolic reconfiguration of the plants’ physiology. This reconfiguration can favour beneficial organisms and deter antagonists like pathogens or herbivores. Determining the cellular and molecular dialogue between plants, microbes, and insects, and its ecological and evolutionary implications is important for understanding the options for each partner to adopt an adaptive response to its biotic environment. Moving forward, understanding how such ecological interactions are shaped by environmental change and how we potentially mitigate deleterious effects will be increasingly important. The development of integrative multidisciplinary approaches may provide new solutions to the major ecological and societal issues ahead of us. The rapid evolution of technology provides valuable tools and opens up novel ways to test hypotheses that were previously unanswerable, but requires that scientists master these tools, understand potential ethical problems flowing from their implementation, and train new generations of biologists with diverse technical skills. Here, we provide brief perspectives and discuss future promise and challenges for research on insect–plant interactions building on the 16th International Symposium on Insect–Plant interactions (SIP) meeting that was held in Tours, France (2–6 July 2017). Talks, posters, and discussions are distilled into key research areas in insect–plant interactions, highlighting the current state of the field and major challenges, and future directions for both applied and basic research.

However, our understanding of the impact of increasing drought on extreme wildfires events remains incomplete. Here, we analyzed the weather conditions associated with the extreme wildfires events that occurred in Mediterranean France during the exceptionally dry summers of 2003 and 2016. We identified that these fires were related to two distinct shifts in the fire weather space towards fire weather conditions that had not been explored before and resulting from specific interactions between different types of drought and different fire weather types. In 2016, a long-lasting "press drought" intensified wind-driven fires. In 2003, a "hot drought" combining a heat wave with a press drought intensified heat-induced fires. Our findings highlight that increasing drought conditions projected by climate change scenarios might affect the dryness of fuel compartments and lead to a higher frequency of extremes wildfires events.

Abstract: International audience; Bacillus cereus is a major foodborne bacterial pathogen able to survive a large number of physical-chemical stresses. B. cereus encounters different pH and redox potential (E-h7) levels during its passage through the gastrointestinal tract. Analysis of the combined influence of pH and redox stresses on B. cereus F4430/73 physiology found that B. cereus F4430/73 growth at pH 7.0 at 37 degrees C had strong reducing capacities, with a total change of 315 mV from an initial redox value of +214 +17 mV. The combination of low E-h7 and low pH led to a drastic reduction of growth parameters compared to oxidative E-h7 and neutral pH. Metabolic analysis showed that low pH significantly modifies glucose fermentative metabolism, with changes including decreased production of acid metabolite (acetate, lactate, formate) and increased production of 2,3-butanediol. Low E-h7 slightly enhanced the acid-tolerance response of B. cereus whereas low pH pre-adaptation led to thermal stress cross-protection. These results highlight new mechanisms that bring fresh insight into B. cereus pH and redox stress adaptations.

L’identification des mécanismes écologiques impliqués dans les interactions complexes entre les plantes de bordure, les ennemis naturels et les ravageurs/adventices est indispensable afin d’améliorer ce service écosystémique dans une démarche de l’ingénierie agro-écologique. Nous présentons plusieurs études qui ont été menées dans le cadre du projet PEERLESS et des projets associés. Ces études avaient pour objectif de (1) tester l’influence de la communauté végétale sur la régulation des ravageurs des cultures et (2) identifier les groupes fonctionnels de la végétation qui influencent la régulation, (3) analyser les déplacements des ennemis naturels entre la végétation des bordures et l’intérieur des parcelles agricoles et (4) évaluer les effets de différents aménagements de bordures (bandes fleuries et enherbées, haies) sur les populations d’auxiliaires et de bioagresseurs. Les travaux ont été réalisés dans les parcelles agricoles des régions Pays-de-la-Loire, Bretagne, Îlede- France, Bourgogne et Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. Pour la plupart des études, la composition floristique de la végétation a été caractérisée en même temps que l’abondance des ravageurs principaux et de leurs ennemis naturels. Différentes méthodes de marquage (protéique, isotopique) ont été utilisées pour tracer les déplacements des insectes. Les études ont permis d’identifier les groupes fonctionnels et les espèces végétales au sein de ces groupes qui sont positivement/négativement corrélés à la régulation de plusieurs groupes des ravageurs. En particulier, les espèces entomophiles qui fleurissement lors de l’infestation maximale des ravageurs principaux ont un effet positif sur l’abondance des ennemis naturels ce qui se traduit par une augmentation de prédation et de parasitisme (Bischoff et al. 2016, Pollier et al in revision). Les méthodes de marquage ont réussi de tracer les déplacements des insectes ciblés. Les parasitoïdes ayant consommé le nectar C13 fournit par les plantes marquées en bordure d’une parcelle de colza ont été retrouvés à une distance de 20m à l’intérieur (Pollier et al. 2016). Le marquage des bordures avec la protéine de l’oeuf (ovalbumine) a démontré les déplacements des carabes et des araignées sur toute la surface d’un verger. Cependant des grandes différences de mobilité entre habitat semi-naturel et cultures adjacentes ont été mises en évidence entre groupes et espèces d’ennemis naturels (Lefèbvre et al. 2017). Les tests d’aménagement des bordures ont confirmé l’effet positif des habitats riches en ressources florales (mélanges fleuris) sur la régulation des ravageurs. Les haies et les mélanges de graminées (« bandes enherbées ») sont moins favorables à la prédation et le parasitisme des ravageurs (Albert et al. 2017). Néanmoins, les habitats pauvres en ressources florales peuvent abriter les ennemis naturels qui ne dépendent pas directement du nectar ou du pollen.

Abstract: 5 pages; International audience; Immune function is a key determinant of an organism's fitness, and natural insect populations are highly variable for this trait, mainly due to environmental heterogeneity and pathogen diversity. We previously reported a positive correlation between infection prevalence by parasitoids and host immunity in natural populations of the vineyard pest Lobesia botrana. Here, we tested whether this correlation reflects a plastic adjustment of host immunity in response to the local presence of parasites. To this end, we measured immunity of non-parasitized L. botrana larvae exposed, respectively, to one of the two most common species of parasitoids in vineyards, over 6days. Larvae were able to sense the parasitoid through visual, chemical, or mechanical cues, but contact larvae-parasitoid were excluded. Contrary to our hypothesis, we found that L. botrana larvae did not increase their immune defenses in the presence of parasitoids, despite their ability to sense a potential threat. Our results therefore suggest that the positive correlation between infection prevalence by parasitoids and L. botrana immunity among natural populations may result from micro-evolutionary changes resulting from long-term local selection pressures imposed by parasitoids in wild populations rather than plastic adjustments of immunity.

Abstract: The Ascomycotina Diplodia seriata is one of the causal agent of grapevine trunk diseases. Here, we present an improved genome sequence of D. seriata isolate F98.1, isolated in 1998 at Perpignan (France) from the trunk of a diseased grapevine. D. seriata is one of the most common Botryosphaeriaceae species associated with grapevine trunk diseases. This species is also frequently isolated from woody tissues of trees such as Acer sp., Prunus sp. or Quercus sp.. Sequencing was performed using Illumina HiSeq 2500 at a coverage of 270 X. Assembly with SOAPdenovo 1.05 led to 512 contigs and 112 scaffolds (37.27 Mb, GC%: 56.8). This high quality genome (Scaffold N50, 2.9 Mb; Min scaffold length, 1.007 bp; gaps, 250 kb) has 13 scaffolds with a size higher than 1 Mb (90% of total sequence), likely corresponding to chromosomes. Using GLEAN, 8.087 CDS were identified, 93 % being supported by RNAseq (mycelium on PDB or MM for 4 days). Recently, the genome sequence of D. seriata isolate DS831 from an infected grapevine (USA, 2011) was released. The genome size of DS831 (37.13 Mb) is almost similar to F98.1. However, its assembly is 5 times more fragmented (1391 contigs, 695 scaffolds) and it carries 9398 CDS. Bidirectional best blast hit (BDBH) analysis revealed that 82% of F98.1 and DS831 CDS are similar, 1507 genes are specific to F98.1 strain, and 2763 are specific to DS831 strain. Using Blast, we showed that 2686 (97.2%) of DS831 apparently specific genes were present in F98.1 genome sequence, and reversely 1440 (95.6%) of F98.1 apparently specific genes are present in DS831 genome sequence. Therefore, the difference in CDS numbers between DS831 and F98.1 is likely a consequence of using different annotation software (Glean vs Augustus). Fusion of two annotation leads to a total of 10,500 genes. The genomes of the two species Diplodia sapinea and Diplodia scrobiculata closely related to D. seriata have been sequenced. These two genome have a size of, respectively, 36,97 and 35,85 Mb, and 13020 and 13624 genes respectively. These differences could reflect recent massive gene losses in D. seriata.

Abstract: International audience; To assess the capacity of esca to spread within vineyards of the Bordeaux region, over 8 years of annual records, containing between 1,200 and 2,300 contiguous Cabernet Sauvignon vines from 15 mature vineyards, were used for spatial statistical analyses. A group of non-parametric tests, based on join count statistics and on permutation methods, was developed to characterize the spatial structure of esca-symptomatic vines in terms of spread in any direction or within-row only. Among vineyards, a large range of spatial patterns, from random to strongly structured, associated with various prevalence rates that increased over time, were observed. In four vineyards, the complex esca distribution pattern indicated different levels of clustering. By contrast, in other vineyards, only small clusters of two adjacent symptomatic vines were observed, and they were localized along rows, without enlargement over time, except in one vineyard. An analysis of spatial dependence between previously- and newly-symptomatic vines within k-order neighborhoods (k = 1 to 5), showed, for 5 of the 15 vineyards, that the newly-symptomatic vines were located close to previously-infected vines, without a favored orientation or neighbor order. All the results together suggested a limited potential for secondary local spread from neighboring symptomatic vine.

Abstract: International audience; Background and Aims: Social, environmental and regulatory evolution encourages grapegrowers to reduce chemical use. Organic production is one possible answer, but controlling pests and diseases by products allowed in organic production is less easy than with chemicals. We integrated disease severity levels ( Botrytis bunch rot, powdery and downy mildews) and pest incidence ( grape berry moths) to develop an indicator of pests and disease damage in grape bunches, named assessment indicator of damage in grape bunches ( AIDB), which can be used to assess pest incidence in networks of grower vineyards.Methods and Results: In 2011 and 2012, we tested AIDB by monitoring damage at key phenological stages in 20 vineyards in the Bordeaux and Languedoc regions in the south of France, under three modes of production: conventional production, organic production and in conversion to organic production. The indicator proved accurate in describing the total damage on grape bunches under all conditions tested.Conclusions: Irrespective of the mode of production, the AIDB value was negatively correlated with yield parameters and the technical expertise of the grower. This indicator proved to be an innovative tool to estimate the multipest damage on grapevines over a range of conditions.Significance of the Study: The AIDB enables grapegrowers and advisors to assess the integrated impact of their treatment strategies on grape production, which is necessary when reducing pesticide use.

Abstract: International audience; In Gironde (SW of France), 98% of drinking water comes from the North Aquitaine multilayered aquifer system. It constitutes an important strategic water resource considering the great quality of this water and its natural protection against anthropic pollutions. Nevertheless, some of these aquifers are overexploited. In order to manage these resources, a regional planning of groundwater was approved in 2003. It plans the realization of new facilities to improve the spatial distribution of pumping areas in order to minimize groundwater mining impacts on specific sites.Thus, a new well field is planned in the Medoc region at 35 km west of Bordeaux. It will be composed of 14 wells and will produce 10 million cubic meters by year extract from Oligocene aquifer (150 m below ground surface). In this region, most of the surface is occupied by the Landes forest, which corresponds to a monoculture of maritime pines (Pinus pinaster). Soils are mainly composed of sand in which a phreatic aquifer (Plio-Quaternary) is in development.In order to evaluate the impact of the future well field on the Oligocene aquifer and the multilayered aquifer system, a hydrodynamic model (PHONEME) was specially built for this with MARHTE (Thiéry, 2014). It incorporates 8 aquifers and 7 aquitards, covering a total surface of 4,430 km².Simulations done with the groundwater model show a maximum impact of 30 m on the Oligocene and an impact between 0 and 35 cm on the phreatic aquifer.Results from the hydrodynamic model were used to evaluate impact on forest production using the INRA forest growth model GO+ (Lousteau et al., 2012). This multi-model approach was done in order to gives some answers on the impacts on the growth of trees with the implementation of a well field and to bring solutions to limit use conflicts.

Alyssum murale can grow on non-ultramafic soils as well, with an altitudinal extension ranging from sea level to 2000 m.a.s.l. Among edaphic factors that could influence the phylogenetic structure of the bacterial communities, altitude and Ni bioavailability could be significant. Our objectives were to understand the specific changes in the structure of A. murale rhizosphere bacterial community that occur across two gradients: 1) elevation and 2) bioavailable Ni. We used pyrosequencing technique (454-pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA gene) to characterize bacterial communities in soils from A. murale rhizosphere.On one hand we found a high proportion of Chloroflexi (greater than 50%). Moreover, the higher the soil Ni contents, the more the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria. On the contrary, the abundance of TM7 decreased with increasing levels of bioavailable Ni. On the other hand, we screened Ni-resistant bacteria having 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase (ACCd) activity for developing primers targeting the acdS gene. Quantification of ACCd activity- which is known to stimulate the growth of A murale- directly from soil DNA extracted could be an appropriate tool to predict phytomining efficiency.

In this work, we analyze if and how a modulation of the genetic drift experienced by the pathogens can slow this emergence down. For that purpose, we consider a crop patch in which a given proportion of the plants carry the qualitative resistance and suppose that genetic drift, which is genetically based, can either be added to the initial infection phases of the resistant or of the susceptible plants in the crop. We develop a stochastic SI model of the crop patch, in which only the number of susceptible and resistant infected plants need to be represented. In that model, the infection events follow a Poisson process and undergo bottleneck induced drift, limiting the probability of infection of a plant by a pathogen.Through intensive simulations of this model with the Gillespie algorithm, we show which model parameters most influence the effciency of the genetic drift for improving crop yield. Also, we analyze which combination of genetic drift level and proportion of resistant plants in the crop most improves crop yield.

Abstract: Biodiversity offsetting (BO) is increasingly used in environmental policies as a way to halt biodiversity losses caused by the development of infrastructure and urbanization. Ecological gains for offsets have so far mainly been obtained through restoration activities conducted on agricultural land specifically acquired for this purpose by developers. This approach however meetsgrowing technical difficulties due to land availability and social conflicts with farmers. The purpose of this paper is to analysethe opportunity of implementing a new approach to conduct biodiversity offsets through the use of agri-environmental schemes that we call agri-environmental biodiversity offset schemes (ABOS). This paper reviews the interests, limits and challenges oftheuseof ABOS in offsetting policies byexaminingtwo major issues: (1) the acceptability of offsetting contracts by farmers, and (2) the effectiveness of ABOS design and implementation. Based on the case-study of a major BO programme following the construction of a big railway bypass in the South of France, the article empiricallyassesses these issues through asurvey carried out with 145 farmers. The results revealthat the main determinants of acceptability are: i) the usual economic factors -farmers with lowest compliance levels and opportunity costs, as well as farms facing economic difficulty,are more likely to adopt-, and ii) social factors –the importance given to other farmers’ decisionand the feeling that this decision is accepted by farmers’ representatives. In terms of effectiveness, ABOS is shown to be effective in meeting legal requirementsof the developer,but concernsare raised about realecological benefits due to issues of additionality, permanence of land use change, and non-compliance with contract requirements. We particularly highlight problems with contract enforcement –especially due to weak sanctions and monitoring –and farmers’ selection that do not allow minimizing moral hazard and adverse selection, which are inherently attached to agri-environmental schemes. These resultsraise questions about the relevance ofdeveloping ABOS in offsetting policies, and lead us to suggest policy improvements.

Abstract: UMR AGAP - équipe DAAV - Diversité, adaptation et amélioration de la vigne; frEsca is currently the most concerning grapevine disease in Europe. This trunk disease affects the longevity of vineyards and is characterized by the development of large inner necroses in the grapevine wood before partial or complete dieback of affected vines. In France, the overall average impact of trunk diseases is now estimated at about 13% of vines impaired in their production potential. This impact was only about 5% in 2003. Esca disease largely contributed to this overall impact. Different biotic and abiotic factors may explain this progression. Examination of plot by plot data has shown very high variability of damage between plots of the same cultivars, with the same age in similar environments. In some cases, the range of variability of damage strongly suggested the influence of cultural factors. For example, Cabernet Sauvignon in the Bordeaux area in 2007, with a vineyard planted in 1982 showing overall impact of 3% of esca-affected vines while another vineyard planted in 1990 exhibited an impact of 80%). Among them, two factors were identified as putative key influences: the training system and the quality of pruning. A survey was undertaken from 2007 by UMR SAVE Bordeaux to attempt to identify comparable plot situations forming pairs with the same variety, the same age and similar soil and climatic environments but varying according training decisions. The study was based on observations in Aquitaine in late summer. Ratings were applied for all esca symptoms, on leaves and on the trunks. Several selected examples showed that training systems leading to long arms were generally less affected than the forms with very short arms or without arms. The quality of the pruning system may also play a major role. Higher vine densities/ha, decided by grower choice or by the rules imposed by the appellations (and not accompanied by a minimum distance between vines), led growers to modify their training system over time, towards simplification of the vine trunk structure that was too great. The study also indicated that the foliar symptoms of esca are relevant clues to reveal the presence of the disease but are not always reliable indicators of impact. Real prospects in terms of reduced damage seem possible only by effective training decisions.This research is presently integrated in a national project entitled “Assessment of the impact of cultural practices or environmental factors for the control of grapevine trunk diseases”. This project is financed via grants from CasDAR (Account of Specific Affectation for Agricultural and Rural Development) and CNIV (National Committee of the Interprofessions of Wines with Label of origin and with Geographical Indication).

Abstract: Combining drastic reduction of inputs and high sensitivity of vine to pathogens implies re-designing viticulture production systems. The newly designed systems then need to be assessed to be sure that they are sustainable and can be implemented by wine growers.A experimental network with 26 vine sites located in Atlantic coast, Mediterranean and in North-East of France, has been set up since 2012. Tested viticulture systems of vine grape production are « Integrated Production », « Organic farming », « Zero fungicide » and « Zero pesticide ». Planting new vine varieties that are resistant to pathogens is under process in Alsace, Bordeaux and Loire vineyards. The methodology framework used to design and to assess the new systems is based on published work. Systems assessment deals with the three dimensions of sustainability: environmental, social and economic and also quality of vine and wine. A set of high set of constraints of the designed viticulture systems is: economical sustainability combining to hard reduction of inputs and high quality of grapes and vines, according to Protected Designation of Origin.Quality and quantity vine plots assessment (i.e. yield, berries quality), diseases assessment (i.e. mildiew, oïdium, grey rot), economic assessment (i.e. gross margin) and environmental assessment (i.e. IFT and INDIGO® indicators) on different combinations of soil and climate, allow assessing and ranking the designed viticulture systems. For instance, one organic system is efficient and reliable for quality and quantity of vine, economic and environmental indicators. The only margin for improvement deals with reducing even more cupper used for fungi management.To conclude, the tested designed systems are well assessed under a set of high set of constraints of French vineyards. Drastically monitoring reduction of inputs (i.e. pesticides and energy) is possible for several new designed viticulture systems. In the next years, the extension of the network to more soil and climate combinations, will allow us to propose innovative robust viticulture systems to winegrowers.; Des systèmes de production viticole ont été évalués quant à leur durabilité. A cet effet, un réseau expérimental avec 26 stes de vignobles situés dans la côte Atlantique, la Méditerranée et dans le Nord-Est de la France, a été installé depuis 2012. Les systèmes de production viticole sont « la Production Intégrée », « l’Agriculture biologique », « le Fongicide Zéro » et « le Pesticide Zéro ». La plantation des nouvelles variété de vigne qui sont résistantes aux pathogènes est en développement en Alsace, Bordelais et Val de Loire.Ont été notés ; La quantité et la qualité des raisins, l’évaluation des maladies (Mildiou, Oïdium, Pourriture grise), l’évaluation économique (la marge brute) et l’évaluation environnementale (IFT – Indice de Fréquence des Traitements et les indicateurs INDIGO ®).Pour conclure, les systèmes testés sont bien évalués sous un ensemble de haute contrainte. La réduction d’apports (pesticides et énergie) est possible pour plusieurs nouveaux systèmes de viticulture. Dans les prochaines années, l’extension du réseau à davantage de conditions de sol et de climat, nous permettra de proposer des systèmes de viticulture robustes novateurs aux vignerons.

Abstract: National audience; Cette présentation témoignera de quelques études conduites actuellement dans l’unité « Plantes et Système de culture Horticoles » dans le but d’évaluer l’effet des habitats semi-naturel sur la régulation des insectes ravageurs (carpocapse et puceron cendré) en vergers de pommiers. La présentation s’appuiera sur une description des approches méthodologiques utilisées à différentes échelles spatio-temporelles pour estimer les niveaux de prédation et de parasitisme des pucerons et des tordeuses dans les vergers (eg exposition de proies sentinelles), pour identifier l’impact relatifs des arthropodes auxiliaires dans la régulation de ces ravageurs (eg analyse ADN des contenus stomacaux des arthropodes prédateurs) et évaluer les déplacements des auxiliaires (analyses immunologiques) entre les habitats semi-naturels (eg haies, bandes fleuries) et les vergers. La présentation rendra finalement compte de la difficulté d’identifier les bénéfices apportés par les infrastructures agro-écologiques sur le contrôle biologique des insectes ravageurs par l’expérimentation en vergers et de la nécessité d’utiliser des modèles mathématiques pour explorer une grande diversité de conditions et proposer des scénario optimaux d’agencements paysagés susceptible d’améliorer la régulation naturelle des bioagresseurs.

Abstract: Although many forest Lepidoptera are known to exhibit cyclic outbreaks in temperate forests, this has never been formally demonstrated for the pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea pityocampa), the main insect defoliator of southern Europe. Yet, the demonstration of periodicity in the population dynamics of forest defoliators is of great interest for developing predictive risk models. We took advantage of 32 years time series recorded on permanent plots throughout France to test for the cyclicity of T. pityocampa outbreaks, estimate the length of cyclic periods and investigate synchrony between regions. Spectral analysis revealed that a large majority of regions and clusters of monitoring plots show significantly periodic outbreaks with a return period of seven to nine years. Outbreaks were not synchronous across the whole country but in neighbouring regions. Several factors such as low host tree quality following defoliation, impact of natural enemies and prolonged diapause might drive the cyclicity of T. pityocampa outbreaks while the Moran effect, here the role of low temperatures, is likely to explain synchrony.
