ObjectivesThis study investigates whether COVID-19 vaccines can elicit cross-reactive antibody responses against the Omicron variant in patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases (ARDs).MethodsThis observational cohort study comprised 149 patients with ARDs and 94 healthcare workers (HCWs). Blood samples were obtained at enrolment, a median of 15 weeks after the second vaccine dose or 8 weeks after the third dose. The functional cross-neutralisation capacity of sera was measured using the Omicron variant receptor-binding domain-ACE2 binding inhibition assay. We assessed the incidence of breakthrough infections and the potential correlation with neutralising responses in participants after receiving third doses. The association of time-from-vaccine and neutralising responses in sera was predicted using linear regression analysis.ResultsThe mean cross-neutralising responses against the Omicron variant developed after the second dose was 11.5% in patients with ARDs and 18.1% in HCWs (p=0.007). These responses were significantly lower in patients with ARDs than in HCWs after the third dose (26.8% vs 50.3%, pConclusionsStriking antibody evasion manifested by the Omicron variant in patients with ARDs and current vaccine-induced immunity may not confer broad protection from Omicron breakthrough infection, highlighting the need for further research on vaccine effectiveness in patients with immune dysfunctions.

Once-daily tacrolimus reduces non-compliance relative to twice-daily tacrolimus. However, little is known about the safety and efficacy of conversion from twice-daily tacrolimus to generic once-daily tacrolimus in liver transplantation (LT). Herein, we investigated the efficacy and safety of a switch from twice-daily tacrolimus to generic once-daily tacrolimus in patients with stable liver graft function.This prospective, multicenter, open-label, single-arm study was conducted in 17 medical centers for 1 year from July 2019 to July 2020 (NCT04069065). Primary endpoint was the incidence of biopsy-proven acute rejection (BPAR) for 24 weeks after conversion. Secondary endpoints were graft failure, patient death, and adverse events (AEs).Of 151 screened LT patients, 144 patients were enrolled. BPAR, graft failure, and patient death did not occur in this patient population. There were no statistical differences in blood tests, liver function tests, or biochemical tests between visits in any of the patients. Median tacrolimus trough level decreased abruptly from 4.7 ng/mL to 3.2 ng/mL after generic once-daily tacrolimus conversion, but median tacrolimus dose increased due to low tacrolimus trough level. Ninety-two adverse events occurred in 54 patients. Liver enzyme levels increased in seven patients (4.9%) after the switch to generic once-daily tacrolimus, but the liver function tests of these patients normalized thereafter. There were three cases of severe AEs not related to investigational drug.Present study suggests that conversion from twice-daily tacrolimus to generic once-daily tacrolimus is effective and safe in stable LT patients.

A recent meta-analysis addressed increased risk of death following revascularization with paclitaxel-coated devices in femopopliteal artery. We evaluated differences in all-cause mortality and amputation free survival between peripheral arterial disease (PAD) patients who were treated with paclitaxel-coated devices and non-paclitaxel-coated devices. This was retrospective population-based cohort study from the National Health Insurance Service claims in South Korea from 2015 to 2019. Multivariate Cox regression analyses after propensity score matching were applied to identify all-cause mortality and amputation-free survival. After propensity score matching, there were 6090 patients per group. The median follow-up days was 580 days (interquartile range [IQR] 240–991 days) and 433 days (IQR 175–757 days) for the non-paclitaxel-coated device group and paclitaxel-coated device group, respectively. Multivariate analysis adjusted for age, sex, diabetes, hypertension, warfarin, and new oral anticoagulants showed that the mortality rate associated with paclitaxel-coated devices was not significantly higher than non-paclitaxel-coated devices (hazard ratio [HR] 0.992; 95% CI 0.91–1.08). The rate of amputation events was higher in patients with paclitaxel-coated devices than those with non-paclitaxel-coated devices (HR 1.614; 95% CI 1.46–1.78). In this analysis, the mortality rate in patients with PAD was not associated with the use of paclitaxel-coated devices, despite a higher amputation rate.

Objectives Early in vitro studies have suggested that hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is a potentially useful drug against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections. This study was conducted to determine whether HCQ had a preventive effect on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in rheumatic disease patients who were taking HCQ. Methods We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study using the records of the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment (HIRA) claim records. The clinical data of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who were tested for SARS-CoV-2 were investigated. We compared the attack rate of COVID-19 between those who underwent HCQ therapy within 14 days before the test for SARS-CoV-2 (HCQ users) and HCQ non-users. Data were analysed using logistic regression models, χ2, and Student's t-tests. Results As of 15th May 2020, 2066 patients with RA or SLE were tested for COVID-19. Among them, 31.4% (649/2066) were treated with HCQ. Most HCQ users (93.7%, 608/649) were taking 200–400 mg/day recommended for the treatment of rheumatic diseases. The attack rate of COVID-19 in the HCQ users (2.3%, 15/649) did not differ from that in the HCQ non-users (2.2%, 31/1417) (p 0.86). Conclusions HCQ prophylactic use at a usual dose did not prevent COVID-19 in patients with rheumatic disease.

Background: We investigated the prevalence of and the factors associated with a high risk of osteoporotic fractures in Korean patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Methods: This was a multicenter, retrospective study including 219 AS patients from five university hospitals; the control group was selected by matching age and sex with those of the AS patients. The fracture risk was evaluated based on bone mineral density (BMD) measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and the fracture risk assessment tool (FRAX) with/without BMD. Results: The mean age of the patients was 47.6 years, and 144 (65.8%) patients were men. According to the WHO criteria and FRAX with/without BMD, the candidates for pharmacological treatment were 44 (20.1%), 20 (13.2%), and 23 (15.1%) patients, respectively, significantly more than those in the healthy control group. Among them, the proportion of patients receiving osteoporosis treatment was 39.1–75%. In logistic regression analysis, menopause was an independent factor for the high risk of fracture according to the WHO criteria and FRAX with/without BMD. C-reactive protein level (odds ratio (OR) 3.8 and OR 6) and glucocorticoid use (OR 1.5 and OR 1.7) were associated with a high risk of osteoporotic fracture based on FRAX without BMD and osteoporosis diagnosed according to the WHO criteria. Conclusions: Our study suggests that both FRAX and WHO criteria may be complementary for treatment decisions to reduce osteoporotic fractures in patients with AS.

Background Hepatic vein reconstruction is very important in living donor liver transplantation to prevent outflow obstruction and maintain the graft function. In right liver grafts, reconstruction of the tributary of the middle hepatic vein (MHV) or inferior hepatic vein (IHV) is mandatory, and several options are recommended. Recently, it has been reported that a single, wide orifice is an important perquisite for adequate outflow in liver transplantation. This can be achieved by various venoplasty techniques in back table procedures using the recipient’s saphenous vein, a cryopreserved vascular graft, or a synthetic vascular graft. Methods Due to the insufficiency of an actual graft, we used a simple back table technique with the polyethylene terephthalate Y-graft in 3 cases of right liver grafting between October 2015 and September 2019 in Gil Medical Center. We used both arms of the Y-graft for anastomosis of the 2 largest branches of both tributaries. The main trunk of the Y-graft was then joined to the right hepatic vein (RHV). We analyzed these patients’ outcomes retrospectively and the study was approved by institutional review board in Gachon University Gil Medical Center. This study strictly complies with the Helsinki Congress and the Istanbul Declaration regarding donor source and informed consent was obtained from all patients. Results All 3 patients had good tributary patency and allograft function at discharge. The patency of the graft was maintained over a period ranging from 2 months to 2 years, without any anticoagulant administration. Regardless of the tributary patency, all patients survived with good outflow of the grafts. Conclusions Although we had little prior experience in synthetic venous grafts, these cases indicate some interesting findings, with a simple and intuitive procedure. We believe our technique is a practical method for manipulating various venous tributaries in a right liver graft.

Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the sacroiliac joints. In this study, we develop a method for detecting bone marrow edema by magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the sacroiliac joints and a deep-learning network. A total of 815 MR images of the sacroiliac joints were obtained from 60 patients diagnosed with axSpA and 19 healthy subjects. Gadolinium-enhanced fat-suppressed T1-weighted oblique coronal images were used for deep learning. Active sacroiliitis was defined as bone marrow edema, and the following processes were performed: setting the region of interest (ROI) and normalizing it to a size suitable for input to a deep-learning network, determining bone marrow edema using a convolutional-neural-network-based deep-learning network for individual MR images, and determining sacroiliac arthritis in subject examinations based on the classification results of individual MR images. About 70% of the patients and normal subjects were randomly selected for the training dataset, and the remaining 30% formed the test dataset. This process was repeated five times to calculate the average classification rate of the five-fold sets. The gradient-weighted class activation mapping method was used to validate the classification results. In the performance analysis of the ResNet18-based classification network for individual MR images, use of the ROI showed excellent detection performance of bone marrow edema with 93.55 ± 2.19% accuracy, 92.87 ± 1.27% recall, and 94.69 ± 3.03% precision. The overall performance was additionally improved using a median filter to reflect the context information. Finally, active sacroiliitis was diagnosed in individual subjects with 96.06 ± 2.83% accuracy, 100% recall, and 94.84 ± 3.73% precision. This is a pilot study to diagnose bone marrow edema by deep learning based on MR images, and the results suggest that MR analysis using deep learning can be a useful complementary means for clinicians to diagnose bone marrow edema.

Background Patient-centered management is becoming increasingly important in gout, but there are limited studies exploring patients' perspectives and preferences. We aimed to investigate patients' perspectives and preferences regarding gout and gout management, and their impacts on adherence to urate lowering therapy (ULT). Methods A paper-based survey was performed in patients with gout seen at the rheumatology outpatient clinics of 16 tertiary hospitals. The survey included questions regarding demographics, comorbidities, gout attacks, current treatment and adherence, and patients' perspectives and preferences regarding gout and gout management. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to determine the factors associated with ULT adherence. Results Of 809 surveyed patients with gout, 755 (94.5%) were using ULT. Among those using ULT, 89.1% had ≥ 80% adherence to ULT. Majority of the patients knew management strategies to some extent (94.8%), perceived gout as a life-long disease (91.2%), and were making efforts toward practicing at least one lifestyle modification (89.2%). Most patients (71.9%) obtained information about gout management during their clinic visits. Approximately half of the patients (53.6%) preferred managing their disease with both ULT and lifestyle modification, 28.4% preferred ULT only, and 17.4% preferred lifestyle modification only. Adherence was better in patients with older age (odds ratio [OR], 1.03), those with better knowledge of gout management strategies (OR, 3.56), and those who had preference for ULT (OR, 2.07). Conclusion Patients' perspectives and management preferences had high impacts on adherence to ULT in gout. Consideration of patients' perspectives and preferences is important for achieving the desired clinical outcome in gout., Graphical Abstract

Objective: The surgical workforce, like the rest of the population, is ageing. This has raised concerns about the association between the age of the surgeon and their surgical outcomes; however, this association has not been widely studied. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies published as full articles on postoperative mortality and major adverse outcome (MAO) according to the surgeons' age. Design: Ten retrospective cohort studies on 29 various surgeries were considered.Setting: The search was performed on 2 February 2021 using the Embase and Medline databases.Participants: This meta-analysis involved 1,666,108 patients who were drawn from 10 cohort studies and were subjected to 29 types of surgeries. Main outcome measures: This meta-analysis categorised surgeons into young, middle-aged, and old-aged groups and evaluated the influence of the surgeons' age on the clinical outcomes, like postoperative mortality and MAO. Results: The risk of death in the patients undergoing surgery by young surgeons was 1.02 (1.00–1.04, P = 0.07) compared to those by middle-aged surgeon. The mortality risk in patients undergoing surgery by old-aged surgeons was 1.14 (1.02–1.28, P < 0.001) compared to those by middle-aged surgeons. The MAO risk in the patients undergoing surgery by young surgeons was 1.04 (0.92–1.18, P = 0.48) compared to those by middle-aged surgeons. The MAO risk in the patients undergoing surgery by older surgeons was 1.01 (0.88–1.16, P = 0.93) compared to those by middle-aged surgeons. Conclusion: This meta-analysis indicated that surgeries performed by oldaged surgeons had a higher risk of postoperative mortality than those by middle-aged surgeons. Thus, it necessitates the introduction of a multidisciplinary approach to evaluate the performance of senior surgeons. Objective We compared the image quality according to the radiation dose on computed tomography (CT) venography at 80 kVp using advanced modeled iterative reconstruction for deep vein thrombus and other specific clinical conditions considering standard-, low-, and ultralow-dose CT. Methods In this retrospective study, 105 consecutive CT venography examinations were included using a third-generation dual-source scanner in the dual-source mode in tubes A (reference mAs, 210 mAs at 70%) and B (reference mAs, 90 mAs at 30%) at a fixed 80 kVp. Two radiologists independently reviewed each observation of standard- (100% radiation dose), low- (70%), and ultralow-dose (30%) CT. The objective quality of large veins and subjective image quality regarding lower-extremity veins and deep vein thrombus were compared between images according to the dose. In addition, the CT dose index volumes were displayed from the images. Results From the patients, 24 presented deep vein thrombus in 69 venous segments of CT examinations. Standard-dose CT provided the lowest image noise at the inferior vena cava and femoral vein compared with low- and ultralow-dose CT (p < 0.001). There were no differences regarding subjective image quality between the images of popliteal and calf veins at the three doses (e.g., 3.8 ± 0.7, right popliteal vein, p = 0.977). The image quality of the 69 deep vein thrombus segments showed equally slightly higher scores in standard- and low-dose CT (4.0 ± 0.2) than in ultralow-dose CT (3.9 ± 0.4). The CT dose index volumes were 4.4 ± 0.6, 3.1 ± 0.4, and 1.3 ± 0.2 mGy for standard-, low-, and ultralow-dose CT, respectively. Conclusions Low- and ultralow-dose CT venography at 80 kVp using an advanced model based iterative reconstruction algorithm allows to evaluate deep vein thrombus and perform follow-up examinations while showing an acceptable image quality and reducing the radiation dose.

Objective It remains unknown whether cancer risk differs among the three subtypes of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (AAV) and what the cancer risk factors are. We conducted a nationwide study in Korea to evaluate the risk of cancer in patients with AAV and to identify the risk factors for cancer. Methods We analyzed the Health Insurance Review and Assessment database of Korea and identified 1982 patients diagnosed with AAV between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2017. The patients and controls with no history of AAV or cancer were matched 1:4 by propensity scores. The study outcome measure was incidence of cancer during 11 years of follow-up. Results Patients with granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), microscopic polyangiitis (MPA), and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) numbered 684, 606, and 692, respectively. The overall incidence of cancer was higher among patients with AAV than in controls (HR 1.32, 95% CI 1.08–1.61). The risk of hematological malignancy, lung cancer, and bladder cancer in the GPA group, lung cancer in the MPA group, and hematological malignancy in the EGPA group were significantly higher than in controls (HR 7.39, 3.20, 4.20, 2.86, and 4.65, respectively). Age, male sex, GPA subtype, and cyclophosphamide use were significantly associated with cancer risk in patients with AAV. Conclusion Overall cancer incidence was increased in patients with AAV. Cancer risk was higher in patients with GPA than in those with MPA or EGPA. The use of cyclophosphamide was associated with an increased risk of cancer, while rituximab was not.

Background Duplication of the superficial femoral artery (SFA) is an extremely rare anatomic variation, with few case studies reported. We report one case of the duplicated SFA, discovered by both ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography angiography (CTA). We also reviewed literatures concerning 6 cases of the duplicated SFA (including our present case), and summarized the clinical and imaging features of the anatomic variation. Case presentation A 55-year-old woman presented to our hospital with an intermittent cramp in the lateral aspect of the right leg. The patient underwent Doppler US examination on bilateral lower extremity arteries and veins to examine potential vascular abnormality. Incidentally, US discovered the duplicated left SFA and CTA of bilateral lower extremities revealed the anatomic orientation, course, length, diameter and distance of the duplicated left SFA. It was revealed to be divided into two trunks with similar luminal diameter and courses parallel. They reunited at distal thigh level. The findings of US and CTA examination did not correspond with the symptom of the patient, and the patient was discharged. Conclusion We report a rare case of the duplicated SFA diagnosed with the combinations of US and CTA examination, which served as valuable imaging methods to detect and diagnose the vascular anatomic variation in lower extremities.

Background Soluble urate has been shown to serve as an antioxidant, especially in the central nervous system. Although there are intriguing data suggesting that low levels of serum urate are associated with worse outcomes in neurodegenerative diseases, its impact on mental health has not been adequately assessed. Thus, we aimed to investigate the association between serum urate and depression using a large, nationally representative sample. Methods Information on participants’ socio-demographic characteristics as well as physical and mental health conditions were retrieved from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2016 dataset. The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ)-9 was applied to identify depressive symptoms. Analyses were stratified by age: young adults (aged 19–39 years), middle-aged adults (aged 40–59 years), and older adults (aged 60 years and older). Results A total of 5332 participants were included. Serum urate concentrations were divided into sex-specific quartiles based on their distribution: ≤ 4.9 (Q1), 5.0–5.7 (Q2), 5.8–6.6 (Q3), and ≥ 6.7 (Q4) mg/dL in men and ≤ 3.7 (Q1), 3.8–4.3 (Q2), 4.4–4.9 (Q3), and ≥ 5.0 (Q4) mg/dL in women. There was a significant negative linear relationship between serum urate quartiles and PHQ-9 scores in older adults (p for trend = 0.020 in men and p for trend = 0.048 in women). Compared to high levels (Q3 and Q4) of serum urate, low levels (Q1 and Q2) were significantly associated with the overall burden of depression in older women (OR 1.78, 95% CI 1.21, 2.61) and clinically relevant depression in older men (OR 3.35, 95% CI 1.16, 9.70), even after adjustment. Conclusions Based on the KNHANES data, low levels of serum urate are associated with a higher prevalence of depression in older adults. This may have clinical implications for mental health.

Background We purposed to evaluate the seasonality and associated factors of the incidence of gout attacks in Korea. Methods We prospectively enrolled patients with gout attacks who were treated at nine rheumatology clinics between January 2015 and July 2018 and followed them for 1-year. Demographic data, clinical and laboratory features, and meteorological data including seasonality were collected. Results Two hundred-five patients (men, 94.1%) were enrolled. The proportion of patients with initial gout attacks was 46.8% (n = 96). The median age, body mass index, attack duration, and serum uric acid level at enrollment were 50.0 years, 25.4, 5.0 days, and 7.4 mg/dL, respectively. Gout attacks were most common during spring (43.4%, P < 0.001) and in March (23.4%, P < 0.001). A similar pattern of seasonality was observed in the group with initial gout attacks. Alcohol was the most common provoking factor (39.0%), particularly during summer (50.0%). The median diurnal temperature change on the day of the attack was highest in the spring (9.8°C), followed by winter (9.3°C), fall (8.6°C), and summer (7.1°C) (P = 0.027). The median change in humidity between the 2 consecutive days (the day before and the day of the attack) was significantly different among the seasons (3.0%, spring; 0.3%, summer; −0.9%, fall; −1.2%, winter; P = 0.015). One hundred twenty-five (61%) patients completed 1-year follow-up (51% in the initial attack group). During the follow-up period, 64 gout flares developed (21 in the initial attack group). No significant seasonal variation in the follow-up flares was found. Conclusion In this prospective study, the most common season and month of gout attacks in Korea are spring and March, respectively. Alcohol is the most common provoking factor, particularly during summer. Diurnal temperature changes on the day of the attack and humidity changes from the day before the attack to the day of the attack are associated with gout attack in our cohort., Graphical Abstract

Background The 24-hour uric acid excretion measurement is important in assessing disease status and helping to select the appropriate uric acid-lowering agent for patients with gout, however, it is inconvenient. The authors investigated the efficacy of the random urine uric acid-to-creatinine (UA/CR) ratio to screen the patients who under-secreted 24-hour urine uric acid. Methods This was a retrospective cross-sectional study. Ninety patients with gout, without undergoing uric acid-lowering treatment were enrolled. Twenty-four-hour urine and random urine samples were obtained on the same day. Six hundred mg of uric acid in the 24-hour urine sample was used as a standard for distinguishing between over and under-excretion groups. Results The random urinary UA/CR ratio showed positive correlation with 24-hour urine uric acid excretion (γ = 0.398, P < 0.001). All the patients with the random UA/CR less than 0.2 excreted less than 600 mg uric acid in 24-hour urine collection. When the random urine UA/CR ratio < 0.2 was regarded as a positive result, the positive predictive value, negative predictive value, sensitivity, and specificity in the uric acid under-excretion were 100% (8 of 8), 64.6% (53 of 82), 21.6% (8 of 37), and 100% (53 of 53), respectively. Conclusion There is a moderate positive correlation between the random urinary UA/CR ratio and 24-hour urine uric acid excretion, so that UA/CR ratio may not be a good predictor of 24-hour urine uric acid excretion. However, the random urine UA/CR ratio 0.2 can be a useful predictor to screen the gouty patients who need to be treated with uricosuric drugs., Graphical Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to compare surgical revisions and balloon angioplasty after surgical thrombectomy on thrombosed dialysis access as a first event. Materials and Methods: Records of patients undergoing creation of arteriovenous grafts (AVGs) at the Gachon University Gil Medical Center between March 2008 and February 2016 were reviewed. Among them, patients who underwent treatment on first-time thrombotic occlusion after AVG creation were identified. Outcomes were primary, primary-assisted, and secondary patency. The patency was generated using the Kaplan-Meier method, and patency rates were compared by log-rank test. Results: A total of 59 de novo interventions (n=26, hybrid interventions; n=33, surgical revisions) for occlusive AVGs were identified. The estimated 1-year primary patency rates were 47% and 30% in the surgery and hybrid groups, respectively. The estimated primary patency rates were not different between the two groups (log-rank test, P=0.73). The Kaplan-Meier estimates of 6 and 12 months for primary-assisted patency rates were 68% and 57% in the surgery group and 56% and 56% in the hybrid group. The Kaplan-Meier estimates of 12 and 24 months secondary patency rates were 90% and 71% in the surgery group and 79% and 62% in the hybrid group. There were no differences in the estimated primary-assisted and secondary patency rates between the two groups. Conclusion: Our results showed no significant difference between the two groups in terms of primary patency (P=0.73), primary-assisted patency (P=0.85), and secondary patency (P=0.78). However, percutaneous transluminal angioplasty can give more therapeutic options for both surgeons and patients.

Objective The purpose of this study was to identify whether determinants of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in middle-aged female patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) differed according to the presence or absence of fibromyalgia. Methods One hundred and fifty-two patients with SLE and 139 healthy controls (HCs) completed the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form (SF-36) and EuroQol EQ-5D questionnaires about HRQoL. Disease activity and cumulative disease damage were assessed with standard indices. Sleep quality was assessed using the Korean version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (K-PSQI). Result The mean EQ-5D and physical and mental components of SF-36 were lower in SLE patients with fibromyalgia (n = 41) than in those without fibromyalgia (n = 111) and HCs. The scores in all eight domains of the SF-36 were lower in SLE patients with fibromyalgia than in patients without fibromyalgia and HCs. Poor sleep (defined as a K-PSQI > 5) was reported by 85% of SLE patients with fibromyalgia, by 51% of patients without fibromyalgia, and by 33% of HCs. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that lower educational level, cumulative organ damage severity and poor sleep quality were independent determinants of HRQoL in SLE patients with fibromyalgia, whereas disease activity, sleep quality and depressive mood were independent determinants of HRQoL in those without fibromyalgia. Conclusion Poor sleep quality is the common independent risk factor for poor HRQoL in both middle-aged SLE patients with fibromyalgia and without fibromyalgia. Sleep quality improvement may improve HRQoL in female SLE patients, even in those without fibromyalgia.

Extracting holistic features from the whole face and extracting the local features from the sub-image have pros and cons depending on the conditions. In order to effectively utilize the strengths of various types of holistic features and local features while also complementing each weakness, we propose a method to construct a composite feature vector for face recognition based on discriminant analysis. We first extract the holistic features and the local features from the whole face image and various types of local images using the discriminant feature extraction method. Then, we measure the amount of discriminative information in the individual holistic features and local features and construct composite features with only discriminative features for face recognition. The composite features from the proposed method were compared with the holistic features, local features, and others prepared by hybrid methods through face recognition experiments for various types of face image databases. The proposed composite feature vector displayed better performance than the other methods.
