Objective. To identify objective measures of sleep and molecular markers of sleep reactivity to stress to determine its role for insomnia prevention and management. Design and methods. The sample included 42 subjects with sleep disturbances and 23 subjects without sleep-related complaints (control group) aged 18 to 72 years. Altogether there are 19 men and 55 women. Nine participants were excluded from the study. Sleep reactivity to stress was assessed using the Ford Insomnia Response to Stress Test (FIRST) questionnaire. The Integrative Anxiety Test was used to screen for anxiety. Sleep indices were assessed by polysomnography (PSG). Blood plasma samples were collected in the morning after PSG to determine brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and 24-hour urine was collected one week after PSG to assess metanephrine levels. Results. There were 64 % healthy subjects with low sleep reactivity to stress and low anxiety and 79 % subjects showed insomnia among persons with high sleep reactivity and anxiety. Significant differences in PSG measures were found in groups with low and high sleep reactivity: the efficiency of sleep and the percentage of the second stage of NREM sleep were higher in group with low reactivity, also sleep latency and wake time after sleep onset were lower in group with high reactivity. In addition, serum BDNF level was significantly higher in group with low reactivity, and it correlates positively with daily urinary metanephrine excretion and the absolute duration of stage N3 and negatively with sleep latency. Conclusions. Subjects with high reactivity to stress have lower sleep quality and depth that corresponds to other studies. The level of BDNF is a possible marker of sleep reactivity to stress and it can indicate the potential adaptation to stress.

Introduction. The destruction of foam films occurs when they reach critical thickness and lose the liquid phase as a result of syneresis and evaporation, which are rather difficult to slow down. We have proposed a method for increasing the stability of the fire extinguishing foam by means of replenishing the liquid phase through sprinkling.Methods. Foam stability was measured by the time of destruction of 25 % of the initial foam volume. The concentration of the foaming agent in the sprinkled solution varied from 0.5 to 6 %. Carboxymethylcellulose sodium salt (Na CMC) was used as a stabilizing additive. Field studies were carried out by feeding foam and solution from two AT-3,2-40 (43253)001-MS tank cars.Results and discussion. It has been established that the foam stability is influenced by the sprinkling intensity and the foaming agent concentration. Foam sprinkling with the solutions having low concentration of thefoaming agent leads to the washout of surfactants from the films that reduces the foam stability. The sprinkling intensity reduction boosts the foam stability due to the replenishment of the moisture lost through evaporation. The foam stability was maximal in case of sprinkling with a 2 % solution of the foaming agent, while the sprinkling intensity had no influence. An increase in the concentration of the foaming agent in the sprinkled solution led to a decrease in the foam stability. It is found that a smaller amount of the foaming agent is consumed to maintain the amount of foam through sprinkling than to replenish the destroyed amount through additional foam generation. It is shown that various stabilizing additives can be added to the foam in the process of sprinkling. If Na CMC is added to the solution exposed to sprinkling, the time of foam destruction goes up 3–5 times even in case of a non-recurrent sprinkling session. Field tests have confirmed the feasibility of adding stabilizing additives to the foam by means of sprinkling.Conclusions. The results of the research have shown the feasibility of co-feeding the foam and surfactant solutions, containing various stabilizing additives, in order to extinguish fires and generate stable foams.

Introduction. Currently, the industry produces a wide range of foam generators to produce fire-extinguishing foams, and the foams they produce differ significantly in their expansion ratio and, consequently, fire resistance. Since heat fluxes have the main destructive effect on the foam, the purpose of this paper is to establish the patterns of destruction of foam of different expansion ratio when heated.Methods of research. The foam with expansion ratio from 7.5 to 80 was used for the tests. It was obtained by mechanical beating of 6 % solution of foaming agent PO-6RZ. The thermal stability of the foam was studied when the heat flow from the gas burner flame affects the foam layer. During the experiment, the change in the height of the foam column in time was recorded.Results and Discussion. The results of measurements, presented in the form of dependence of foam layer destruction rate on time, quantity of released liquid phase on 1 m2·s, dependence of foam layer destruction rate on its density allowed revealing a number of patterns. The destruction rate of foam with an expansion ratio of up to 30 remains constant throughout the entire duration of thermal exposure. As the foam expansion ratio increases, the rate of destruction at the initial stage of heat flux exposure increases. With a foam expansion ratio of more than 50, there is initially a sharp increase in the rate of destruction, which subsequently decreases as the foam column decreases. In the conditions of the experiment, the best characteristics were shown by the foam with an expansion ratio of 50, because in the foam with a smaller expansion ratio the syneresis makes a significant contribution to its destruction, and the foams with a larger expansion ratio are destroyed by the mechanical effect of convective flame flows.Conclusion. The study of the foam destruction patterns under thermal impact allowed establishing the fact that its destruction is limited by the rate of impoverishment of the upper layers with liquid.

To improve and specify the method proposed by the authors for high-temperature processing of reactor graphite in a nitrogen atmosphere, the thermodynamic data of the formed nitride compounds are supplemented and the system is calculated at a vacuum pressure of 0.5 atm. The data obtained are compared with the values at atmospheric pressure.
