1. Magnetic imaging under high pressure with a spin-based quantum sensor integrated in a van der Waals heterostructure

Abstract

Pressure is a powerful thermodynamic parameter for tuning the magnetic properties of van der Waals magnets owing to their weak interlayer bonding. However, local magnetometry measurements under high pressure still remain elusive for this important class of emerging materials. Here we introduce a method enabling in situ magnetic imaging of van der Waals magnets under high pressure with sub-micron spatial resolution. Our approach relies on a quantum sensing platform based on boron-vacancy (V$_\text{B}^-$) centers in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), which can be placed in atomic contact of any type of two-dimensional (2D) material within a van der Waals heterostructure. We first show that the V$_\text{B}^-$ center can be used as a magnetic field sensor up to pressures of a few GPa, a pressure range for which the properties of a wide variety of van der Waals magnets are efficiently altered. We then use V$_\text{B}^-$ centers in a thin hBN layer to perform magnetic imaging of a van der Waals magnet under pressure. As a proof of concept, we study the pressure-dependent magnetization in micrometer-sized flakes of $1T$-CrTe$_2$, whose evolution is explained by a shift of the Curie temperature. Besides providing a new path for studying pressure-induced phase transitions in van der Waals magnets, this work also opens up interesting perspectives for exploring the physics of 2D superconductors under pressure via local measurements of the Meissner effect., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Context. The new giant segmented mirror telescopes will use laser guide stars (LGS) for their adaptive optics (AO) systems. Two options to use as wavefront sensors (WFS) are the Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor (SHWFS) and the pyramid wavefront sensor (PWFS). Aims. In this paper, we compare the noise performance of the PWFS and the SHWFS. We aim to find which of the two WFS is the best to use in a single or tomographic configuration. Methods. To compute the noise performance we extended a noise model developed for the PWFS to be used with the SHWFS. To do this, we expressed the centroiding algorithm of the SHWFS as a matrix-vector multiplication, which allowed us to use the statistics of noise to compute its propagation through the AO loop. We validated the noise model with end-to-end simulations for telescopes of 8 and 16 m in diameter. Results. For an AO system with only one WFS, we found that, given the same number of subapertures, the PWFS outperforms the SHWFS. For a 40 m telescope, the limiting magnitude of the PWFS is around 1 magnitude higher than the SHWFS. When using multiple WFS and a Generalized least squares estimator to combine the signal, our model predicts that in a tomographic system, the SHWFS performs better than the PWFS having a limiting magnitude 0.3 magnitudes higher. If using sub-electron RON detectors for the PWFS, then the performances are almost identical between the two WFSs Conclusions. We conclude that when using a single WFS with LGS, the PWFS is a better alternative than the SH. However, for a tomographic system, either would have almost the same performance.

We present a compositional approach to early modeling and analysis of complex aerospace systems based on assume-guarantee contracts. Components in a system are abstracted into assume-guarantee specifications. Performing algebraic contract operations with Pacti allows us to relate local component specifications to that of the system. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of CT scan in the staging of parietal and metastatic invasion in gastric linitis plastica group. Methods: A retrospective multicentric French study was conducted from January 2006 to December 2015 on patients with no metastatic gastric linitis plastica and operated by gastrectomy. A 2/1 matching based on pTNM stage and center was performed. Results: Fifty patients were included in the linitis plastica group and 100 in the control group. Patients from the linitis group were significantly different from those from the control group with a lower age at diagnosis, a more advanced histological lesion, a more frequent ­undiagnosed peritoneal carcinomatosis, and a higher risk of R1 resection. Sensitivity and specificity of CT scan for the diagnosis of lymph node involvement were 44% and 75%, respectively, in the linitis plastica group and 55% and 60%, respectively, in the control group. The sensitivity and specificity of CT scan for the T3–T4 parietal invasion were 26% and 100%, respectively, in the linitis group and 40% and 72%, respectively, in the control group. Conclusion: CT scan has an equal sensitivity and specificity for the evaluation of lymph node and parietal involvement in gastric adenocarcinoma, including linitis plastica. CT scan remains the cornerstone of preoperative evaluation in gastric adenocarcinoma, including linitis plastica. Abstract

It is necessary to ensure security and community safety around High Voltage Transmission Poles (HVTP). Legislation requires a safety perimeter around HVTP and the High Voltage Lines (HVL) where no building and tree can be located. However, surveying thousands of kilometers of circuit is an expensive and challenging task that is currently performed by human inspection. Therefore, the use of automatic detection methods enables to facilitate the inspection is necessary to reduce time and cost. Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is proposed in this work to detect, from Google Earth images, buildings and trees within the safety perimeter of HVTP. A dedicated 3 class (House, forest and HVTP) dataset of approximately 1 million tiles with a resolution of 0.09 m/pixel is created. Tiles size for trees and building classes is 64 × 64 pixels while for the HVTP 128 × 128 pixels is used. Three CNN models are built and optimized to classify each of these classes. Models validation shows that, except for houses where the accuracy is only 84 %, the other two classes have an accuracy of over 89 %. Moreover, by analyzing the classified HVTP, type can be identified. Finally, buildings and trees within the safety perimeter around the HVTP can be identified and displayed on the image demonstrating the usefulness of the tool.

Abstract

The overall aim of the present study was to understand how dancers' perception and parents' own perceptions of parents' responsiveness and competence support were associated with dancers' self-perceptions and thriving. In total, 64 dancers and 91 parents for a total of 52 matching dyads participated in the study. Dancers were aged 7–24 years, trained on average 4.17 times/weeks, and were involved in Irish dancing for an average of 9.71 years. Participants completed self-reported questionnaires assessing their perceived responsiveness, competence support, self-perceptions, and thriving. Main analyses consisted of mediations performed with structural equation modeling. Results demonstrate that dancers' perceptions of their parents' responsiveness and competence support are associated with their self-perceptions and thriving. Responsiveness and competence support of their second parent was more strongly associated with thriving than responsiveness and competence support of the main parent. Abstract

Objective and Approach Pupils ‘Educated in Other Than At School’ (EOTAS) are some of the most vulnerable learners, who, for reasons such as mental health or behavioural difficulties, do not attend a mainstream school. We linked population data from Education Wales (EDUW) between 2010-19 to primary and secondary healthcare records. Individuals included in the EOTAS dataset aged from 7 to 18 years were identified as cases. Controls were pseudo-randomly selected based on equivalent age distribution. We used regression approach to compare characteristics of EOTAS pupils with controls and evaluate their risks of self-harm and mental health conditions before and after being in EOTAS provision. Results Being male, high deprivation levels, and previous records childhood maltreatment, self-harm, and mental health conditions resulted in higher odds of being in EOTAS provision. Female in EOTAS provision entered at a later age, and with higher proportion of co-morbidities. Pupils in EOTAS provision had increased incidence of self-harm and mental health conditions from one year after entering EOTAS provision up to 24 years of age than controls with similar characteristics. Conclusions An important proportion of pupils in EOTAS provision are from the most deprived areas in Wales, with complex life trajectories, social, emotional, and mental health needs. Implications EOTAS provision is not sufficient to attend the social, emotional, and mental health needs of their pupils. Long-term support and a better integration with social care, primary and specialist mental health services is required.

Abstract

Objective and Approach They are growing concerns that self-harm and mental health conditions are increasing in university students. This may reflect widening access to higher education, existing population trends or stressors associated with this setting. We linked real-world data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency between 2012-2018 with primary and secondary healthcare records. Students were undergraduates aged 18 to 24 years at university entry. Non-students were pseudo-randomly selected based on an equivalent age distribution. We used regression approach to examine characteristics of students and non-students and their risks of self-harm and mental health conditions before and during university. Results This e-cohort study included 96,760 students and 151,795 non-students. Being male, self-harm and mental-health conditions recorded before university entry, and higher deprivation levels resulted in lower odds of entering university and higher odds of dropout. Risks of self-harm, Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), depression, anxiety, drug misuse, and schizophrenia were lower for students. Risks of self-harm, ASD, ADHD, depression, alcohol misuse and schizophrenia were increasing more in students over time. Older students experienced higher risk of self-harm and mental-health conditions. Younger students were more at risk of alcohol misuse than non-students. Conclusions Mental health conditions in students are common, diverse and they influence their academic outcomes. University students have mental health needs and trajectories that differ from those of the general population. Implications The diversity and complexity of students’ needs require integrated person-centred stepped care approach within universities including triage, access to well-being support, counselling, and referral pathways to mental health services.

Abstract

Inclusion of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in mainstream schools has a positive impact on their social and daily living behaviors. Our objective was to identify clinical and socio-demographic variables promoting or limiting inclusion in mainstream school through childhood and adolescence. The EpiTED study is a long-term, prospective, multicenter cohort of 281 ASD children included before the age of 7, with a 10-year follow-up in France. Variables significantly linked to inclusion in mainstream school were identified using a mixed-effect logistic regression model: greater autonomy [OR = 1.45 (1.29-1.63)], lesser symptom severity [OR = 0.96 (0.92-0.99)] and fewer siblings [OR = 0.86 (0.75-0.99)]. In the multivariate model, the probability for a child of being included in mainstream school decreased over time [OR = 0.91 (0.85-0.97)], i.e. with age.

Abstract

Parasites play a key but overlooked role in the functioning of marine systems. Understanding the drivers of parasite infection in fish is thus crucial. Anisakis levels in the Atlantic horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus resulted from both biotic and environmental drivers. Ontogenic variation of the diet was the first driver of Anisakis level. The nonlinear pattern confirmed that the variation in parasitism was related to ontogenetic dietary shifts. The impact of depth on diet also explained the effect of depth on parasites. In deeper areas, fish only access pelagic prey, where Anisakis presence is high, consistent with the pelagic nature of the parasite. Finally, relative proportions of parasitic burden by tissue appeared to be driven by lipid content. In lipid-rich species like T. trachurus, Anisakis can find favorable conditions in the body cavity and in muscle and avoid the liver. Parasitism levels in fish are thus the result of patterns at play at different levels, and these factors should be better considered before being able to include parasites in an integrated vision of marine ecosystem functioning. Abstract

Hydrogen-powered electric aircraft have attracted significant interests aiming to achieve decarbonization targets. Onboard DC electric networks are facing great challenges in DC fault protection requirements. Vacuum interrupters are widely used in low voltage and medium voltage power systems due to being environmentally friendly with low maintenance. In this paper a moving coil actuator with compensation coils for a vacuum interrupter, as part of a hybrid direct current circuit breaker, is designed and experimentally tested. Compensation coils are used to improve operating speed compared with original moving coil actuator. Comparisons between four possible connections of compensation coils and original moving coil actuator are carried out. Experimental results show comparisons between different connections of actuator coils in terms of opening time and coil current with a range of pre-charged capacitor voltages. Dynamic performance of each actuator connection is also compared. The actuator with compensation coils is shown to have a higher current rising rate and achieve faster opening speed, which is a critical requirement for electric aircraft network protection. The parallel connection actuator achieves the highest opening speed within 3.5 ms with capacitor voltage of 50 V.

Abstract

Polyploidy results from whole-genome duplication and is a unique form of heritable variation with pronounced evolutionary implications. Different ploidy levels, or cytotypes, can exist within a single species, and such systems provide an opportunity to assess how ploidy variation alters phenotypic novelty, adaptability, and fitness, which can, in turn, drive the development of unique ecological niches that promote the coexistence of multiple cytotypes. Switchgrass, Panicum virgatum, is a widespread, perennial C4 grass in North America with multiple naturally occurring cytotypes, primarily tetraploids (4×) and octoploids (8×). Using a combination of genomic, quantitative genetic, landscape, and niche modeling approaches, we detect divergent levels of genetic admixture, evidence of niche differentiation, and differential environmental sensitivity between switchgrass cytotypes. Taken together, these findings support a generalist (8×)–specialist (4×) trade-off. Our results indicate that the 8× represent a unique combination of genetic variation that has allowed the expansion of switchgrass’ ecological niche and thus putatively represents a valuable breeding resource.

Abstract

Abstract Background Anti-PD1/PDL1 immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) transformed the prognosis of patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the response rate remains disappointing and toxicity may be life-threatening, making urgent identification of biomarkers predictive for efficacy. Immunologic Constant of Rejection signature (ICR) is a 20-gene expression signature of cytotoxic immune response with prognostic value in some solid cancers. Our objective was to assess its predictive value for benefit from anti-PD1/PDL1 in patients with advanced NSCLC. Methods We retrospectively profiled 44 primary tumors derived from NSCLC patients treated with ICI as single-agent in at least the second-line metastatic setting. Transcriptomic analysis was performed using the nCounter® analysis system and the PanCancer Immune Profiling Panel. We then pooled our data with clinico-biological data from four public gene expression data sets, leading to a total of 162 NSCLC patients treated with single-agent anti-PD1/PDL1. ICR was applied to all samples and correlation was searched between ICR classes and the Durable Clinical Benefit (DCB), defined as stable disease or objective response according to RECIST 1.1 for a minimum of 6 months after the start of ICI. Results The DCB rate was 29%; 22% of samples were classified as ICR1, 30% ICR2, 22% ICR3, and 26% ICR4. These classes were not associated with the clinico-pathological variables, but showed enrichment from ICR1 to ICR4 in quantitative/qualitative markers of immune response. ICR2-4 class was associated with a 5.65-fold DCB rate when compared with ICR1 class. In multivariate analysis, ICR classification remained associated with DCB, independently from PDL1 expression and other predictive immune signatures. By contrast, it was not associated with disease-free survival in 556 NSCLC TCGA patients untreated with ICI. Conclusion The 20-gene ICR signature was independently associated with benefit from anti-PD1/PDL1 ICI in patients with advanced NSCLC. Validation in larger retrospective and prospective series is warranted.
