Controlled-release fertilizers are interesting alternatives to current commercial chemical fertilizers, which present a higher nutrient release rate, and can negatively impact the ecosystem. In this work, two urea controlled-release fertilizer types were manufactured from carnauba wax (CW), commercial granulated urea (U), and natural and sodium bentonite (Bent-R and Bent-Na, respectively). In the first type, the mechanochemical method produced fertilizers in bars, from a mixture containing different proportions of U, Bent-R, and Bent-Na. In the second type, the dip-coating method was used to coat urea bars with coatings containing different proportions of the Bent-R, Bent-Na, and CW. The cumulative urea release was evaluated over the 30-day incubation period, through soil columns tests and UV/visible spectroscopy. Overall, both fertilizers developed in this work presented lower cumulative urea release than standard fertilizers. On the other hand, the new fertilizers produced from the dip-coating method, provided cumulative urea release lower than that obtained by the mechanochemical method. In summary, carnauba wax and bentonite (raw and sodium modified) are promising materials for developing new urea controlled-release fertilizers. Furthermore, both carnauba wax and bentonite are non-toxic, biodegradable, relatively inexpensive, and created from materials that are easily purchased in Brazil, indicating that the new fertilizers developed in this work have the potential to be produced on a large scale.

Iron oxide and Ca-doped ferrite fibers were successfully prepared via Solution Blow Spinning (SBS). Fibers with several calcium contents (nFe/nCa = 3.0, 5.2, and 20.0 atomic ratio) were prepared after dissolving polyvinylpyrrolidone and Fe and Ca nitrates in an acidic aqueous solution, followed by SBS spinning and calcination at 800 °C. The morphological, structural, optical, vibrational, and magnetic properties of the fibers were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), Mossbauer spectroscopy, and magnetometry. The Rietveld refinement revealed Ca-doped fibers consisting of a mixture of Fe2O3, CaFe2O4, and Ca3.6Fe14.4O25.2 crystalline phases. The Mossbauer spectra at 300 K showed a sextet belonging to the hematite phase and two doublets belonging to the calcium-related phases. Measurements at low temperatures showed a transition at 181.6 K attributed to Ca ferrite. The hematite fibers showed a saturation magnetization (Ms ~ 0.75 emu/g) relatively higher than the bulk α-Fe2O3 (Ms = 0.3 emu/g). The saturation magnetization increased from 3.6 to 6.4 emu/g with increasing Ca content.

A new route based on the combination of saponification/gelation/freeze-casting processes, in which the water was used as the solvent, was proposed to produce highly porous ceramics with isometric pores. The saponification reaction using gelatin promoted an inter-connected and equiaxial pore structure with the absence of lamellar pores, even using water as a solvent. The final porosity was up to ∼95 %, and the average pore size ranged from ≈200 up to 500 μm. The amount of saponifying agent had a significant influence on the pore size, while the contents of solids had a more substantial effect on the open porosity. The results indicate that the in situ production of surfactant combined with freeze casting technique allows obtaining ceramics with high porosity and isometric pores even using water as a solvent.

Objective This work aimed at producing silica-blow-spun nanofibers containing silver nanoparticles (SiO2/Ag) and investigating the effect of their incorporation in different proportions, with or without pre-treatment with a silane coupling agent, on the mechanical, physicochemical, and biological properties of a commercial composite low-viscosity bulk-fill resin. Methods The production of SiO2/Ag nanofibers was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). A portion of the produced nanofibers was silanized. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), contact angle measurements, and agar diffusion tests against Streptococcus mutans were used to verify the differences between silanized and non-silanized nanofibers. Different proportions (0.5 wt% and 1 wt%) of silanized (SiO2/Ag-0.5S and SiO2/Ag-1S) and non-silanized (SiO2/Ag-0.5NS and SiO2/Ag-1NS) nanofibers were incorporated into the bulk-fill composite (Opus Bulk Fill Flow, FGM). A commercial composite was used as the control. Evaluation of the color parameters (L*, a*, and b*), radiopacity, contact angle, antimicrobial activity, Vickers microhardness, surface roughness (Sa and Sq), flexural strength, and SEM of the fractured surfaces were performed. The data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test (fiber morphology), Kruskal-Wallis tests, with Dunn's post hoc test (antimicrobial activity of the specimen against S. mutans), Student’s t-test (disk diffusion), one-way ANOVA and Tukey (color, radiopacity, and contact angle), and two-way ANOVA and Tukey (microhardness, surface roughness, and flexural strength) tests. All statistical analyses were performed at a significance level of 1% (α = 0.01). Results Porous nanometric SiO2/Ag fibers were successfully produced. The silanization process, confirmed by FTIR, increased the diameter and contact angle and reduced the growth inhibition halos of the nanofibers (p 0.01). The lowest microbial counts were obtained in the SiO2/Ag-0.5S group; although no significant difference was observed with the control group (p Significance The incorporation of 0.5% wt. of silanized nanofibers in the commercial composite (SiO2/Ag-0.5S) seemed to be promising, especially for its greater inhibition of S. mutans, adequate roughness, and flexural strength, in addition to high hardness, even after aging in water.

The firing parameters in ceramic masses incorporated with 0, 5, and 10 wt% of scheelite tailings were investigated. The ceramic masses were characterized by X-ray fluorescence, granulometric, mineralogical analysis, and Atterberg limits determination. The samples were obtained by uniaxial pressing (20 MPa), sintered at different temperatures (800, 900, and 1000 °C), and heating rates (5, 10, 15, and 20 °C∙min−1). Physical and mechanical tests (water absorption, apparent porosity, and flexural strength) and mineralogical tests were accomplished from the sintered samples. Natural aging tests were also carried out to assess carbonation resistance. For this, some samples were kept in an internal environment (inside the laboratory) for 3 months. The results showed a high content of calcium oxide in the scheelite tailings and a reduction in the plasticity index of the ceramic masses with the tailings addition. The best results were observed for the ceramic mass with 5% tailings. The best results were observed regarding the firing parameters for the temperature equal to 1000 °C, increasing the heating rate to 10 °C∙min−1 without compromising the material properties. The samples kept in an internal environment for 3 months showed a loss of physical and mechanical properties. Such behavior probably occurred due to the onset of the carbonation phenomenon.

Mining processes produce a massive amount of waste which, if not treated properly, can cause significant environmental and social impacts. Recently, some studies have focused on the use of mining waste as an alternative raw material. This work developed new sustainable ceramic formulations based on bentonite mining waste (BMW) for applications in porcelain stoneware. The BMW was incorporated into the ceramic masses in different percentages (0, 2.5, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 40 wt.%), in partial replacement to feldspar and total to quartz. X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal calorimetry (DTA), and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) techniques were used to characterize bentonite waste. Samples (50 mm × 20 mm × 5 mm) were obtained by uniaxial pressing. Such samples were dried and sintered at 1150, 1200, and 1250 °C. The physical–mechanical properties (apparent porosity, water absorption, linear shrinkage, apparent density, and flexural strength) were evaluated for sintered samples. The phases formed after sintering treatments were characterized by XDR and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The BMW presented a mineralogical composition suitable for use as ceramic raw material. In summary, our results presented that the new sustainable ceramic formulations sintered at 1250 °C have the potential for use in stoneware and porcelain stoneware.

New eco-friendly mass formulations based on the scheelite and kaolin residues were developed to manufacture ceramic tiles. The start raw materials (scheelite residue, kaolin residue, feldspar and plastic clay) were characterized as to their chemical composition, main mineralogical phases, and particle size distribution. Three ceramic masses with 37 wt% of kaolin residues and different contents of the scheelite residues (2 wt%, 5 wt%, and 10 wt%) were formulated. The mass formulations were uniaxially pressed (19.6 MPa) to obtain samples with dimensions of 60 mm × 40 mm x 7 mm, which were dried at 110 °C/24 h, and sintered at different temperatures (1150 °C, 1200 °C, and 1250 °C). Dilatometric experiments measured thermal expansion coefficients. The results are in agreement with the literature, i.e., 6.0 μm/m°C−1, 6.1 μm/m°C−1 and 6.4 μm/m°C−1 to samples with 2 wt%, 5 wt%, and 10 wt% of scheelite residues, respectively. The potential of the mass formulations studied was evaluated by linear shrinkage, water absorption, apparent density, apparent porosity, flexural strength, and mineralogical phase identification. The results were compared with the literature experimental data and International Technical Standards. It was concluded that the samples investigated have suitable properties for use as ceramic and porcelain tiles. Also, the pseudowollastonite and mullite phases were identified in the sample with the lowest concentration of scheelite residue. These phases are responsible for increasing flexural strength.

In recent years there is a high interest in the freeze-casting process because it is a simple, economical, and environmentally friendly method for obtaining highly porous materials. Most of the materials obtained by this technique have directional pore structure and anisotropic properties. However, a wide range of pore size and morphology can be obtained by the control of processing parameters, such as solvent type, solids concentration, particle size, freezing rate, and types of additives. The varied morphologies permit the application of freeze-casted materials in various technological applications. However, despite the high amount of studies about freeze-casting of ceramic materials in the last years, review articles addressing the influence of processing parameters on the pore characteristics of obtained ceramics are still scanty. Therefore, this review addresses the influence of freeze-casting process parameters on the pore characteristics of the ceramic materials.

In this work nanofibrous 3D scaffolds of bioactive glasses (58S, 60%SiO2–36%CaO–4%P2O5 in mol and 63S, 65%SiO2–31%CaO–4%P2O5 in mol) were produced by a one-step solution blow spinning (SBS) process. A green synthesis route was used with water as solvent and PVA (polyvinyl alcohol), 8 wt%, as a spinning agent. The physical properties of the scaffolds were studied, and their bioactivity assessed using simulated body fluid (SBF) and cell viability evaluated with MC3T3-E1 cells. After immersion in SBF, hydroxyapatite formed on the surface of the fibers within 12 h in both compositions. Pre-osteoblastic cells MC3T3-E1 were seeded on nanofiber surfaces and the bioactive glass scaffolds displayed enhanced cell number, protein synthesis and differentiation levels of alkaline phosphatase activity consistent with cytocompatibility. Such novel biomaterials have high potential to be used as scaffolds in tissue engineering for bone regeneration.

The in vitro bioactivity and in vivo bone neoformation in critical-size bone defects of a glass-ceramic material containing strontium ions (Sr2+) were evaluated in the present study as well as the antimicrobial effect against oral pathogens. A glass-ceramic bioactive material in powder (CP), based on the composition of S53P4 bioactive glass, was produced by partially replacing calcium with SrO using the sol-gel route. The amount of SrO added was 2.2 wt% (CPSr12.5) and 5.0 wt% (CPSr25). The amount of Sr2+ ions released by the CP increase with time achieving 18 mg/L at 6 h and the release rate decreased at longer times. pH values higher than 10 were obtained in the first 6 h, in agreement with an inhibitory microbial effect. These materials showed in vitro bioactivity, with total surface coated by hydroxyapatite (HA) after 7 days of immersion in simulated body fluid (SBF). The pH of SBF increased rapidly after immersion of CP, reaching a maximum value of 8.72 after 168 h. HA formation was observed in vitro for all samples. On microtomography and histomorphometric analysis, CPSr25 showed higher values than CP without Sr2+ (CPSr0) for bone volume (p = 0.016), density (p = 0.016) and neoformation area (p = 0.025) at 28 days. Histological analysis revealed higher degree of vascularization after 28 days for CPSr25 when compared to CPSr0 (p = 0.003). In addition, CP showed an inhibitory effect on oral pathogens. Substitution of CaO by SrO (CPSr25) presented the best results on the healing of critical-size bone defects, as evidenced by microtomographic and histological analyses. These data confirmed that higher concentrations of Sr2+doped CP materials are potential alternatives to improve bone healing and regeneration in critical-size bone defects.

To increase the effectiveness of fertilizers, new controlled release nitrogen fertilizers have been developed from a mixture of urea and natural smectitic clays and organoclays with different surfactants (ionic and nonionic) encapsulated in an insoluble, biodegradable polymer film. Smectitic clays were classified according to their chemical, physical and mineralogical aspects. Mixtures of urea and natural/organoclays were pressed, and the specimens were dipped into a polymeric solution of poly-e-caprolactone and acetone (solvent). The resulting controlled release fertilizers were analyzed by infrared spectroscopy and by scanning electron microscopy. The release of urea was evaluated by kinetic dissolution test in aqueous medium as determined by analysis on a UV–visible spectrophotometer. The results have shown that organoclays, especially those with nonionic surfactant coated with a PCL film, favored kinetic and gradual delay in the release of urea. This meets the standards established by the European Committee for Standardization, favoring, therefore, important agro-industrial advances at both national and international levels, securing sustainability in the technological sector.

This work investigated the photocatalytic effect of silver-modified titania fibers on the degradation of rhodamine B (RB) and methylene blue (MB) and the inactivation of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus strains. Fibrous cotton-wool-like structures resulted from a combination of the sol-gel route to solution blow spinning followed by calcination of hybrids fibers at 700 °C. Analysis of X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy confirmed the presence of anatase and rutile polymorphs and metallic silver on fibers. Silver-modified titania fibers inhibited bacterial growth in all experimental conditions regardless of the ion content or UV-irradiation. The effectiveness of microorganism inactivation of titania fibers increases upon UV-irradiation. pH did not influence the photodegradation of RB, and solutions with basic pH enhanced the removal of MB. In a fixed pH, MB presents a faster photodegradation rate as compared to RB, but they match when applying silver-modified titania fibers and UV-irradiation.

Porous N-carbon/silica nanofibers (PN-CSN) were successfully made by solution blow spinning (SBS), polymer solutions containing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), and ethanol. The fibers samples were carbonized at 550 °C in a static air atmosphere. PN-CSN fibers were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, N2 adsorption/desorption, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and zeta potential. The adsorption capacity was determined using a dye (methylene blue, MB). The PN-CSN fibers had a small average diameter (233 ± 178 nm), high specific surface area (364 m2 g−1) and pore volume (0.18 cm3 g−1). The pore size distribution ranged from 10 to 170 nm. Chemical analyses of the fibers revealed a residual amount of N (6.2%) and C (20,85%) as is characteristic in ceramic nanofibers made with polyacrylonitrile (PAN). The PN-CSN fibers had an adsorption capacity of approximately 400 mg g−1. The best fit for the adsorption data was found using a Langmuir model. The adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second order model. Thermodynamic analyses revealed the adsorption mechanism was endothermic and spontaneous for PN-CSN adsorbents.

Mineralogical and technological characterization of ceramic raw materials from a new deposit located at Caxias city, Maranhão State—Brazil, was accomplished to determine their potential as raw materials for the ceramics industry in northeastern Brazil. The ceramic raw materials were collected from three different locations on the site and characterized by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA), and thermogravimetry (TG). The XRF analysis of the fraction < 2 μm revealed that most samples had SiO2 (35–51 wt%), Al2O3 (19–29 wt%), Fe2O3 (2–21 wt%), MgO (0.7 to 4.5 wt%) and K2O (0.9 to 5 wt%) as components. Quartz, kaolinite, illite, hematite and montmorillonite were the main mineral phases identified. DTA and TG analysis confirmed the mineral identification. The technological potential of the ceramic raw materials was investigated by: cation exchange capacity (CEC), plastic behavior (Atterberg Limits), linear shrinkage at 950 °C (LSF), flexural strength (FS), apparent porosity (AP), water absorption (WA) and bulk density (BD). The main experimental results—WA (9–17%), AP (19–31%), FS (2.0–23 MPa), and the Atterberg limits—indicated that the ceramic raw materials investigated have high potential to be used to develop mass for red or structured ceramics, such as bricks and roof tiles.

The physical properties of porous silica nanofibers are an important factor that impacts their performance in various applications. In this study, porous silica nanofibers were produced via solution blow spinning (SBS) from a silica precursor/polymer solution. Two polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP, Mw = 360,000 and 1,300,000) were chosen as spinning aids in order to create different pore properties. The effect of their physical properties on the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) in an aqueous solution was explored. After forming, the nanofibers were calcined to remove the organic phase and create pores. The calcined nanofibers had a large amount of micro and mesopores without the use of additional surfactants. The molecular weight of the PVP impacted the growth of silica particles and consequently the pore size. High Mw PVP inhibited the growth of silica particles, resulting in a large volume of micropores. On the other hand, silica nanofibers with a high fraction of mesopores were obtained using the lower Mw PVP. These results demonstrate a simple method of producing blow spun silica nanofibers with defined variations of pore sizes by varying only the molecular weight of the PVP. In the adsorption process, the accessible mesopores improved the adsorption performance of large MB molecules.

The effects of acid and organo-functionalizations on the surface of Brazilian palygorskite clay was investigated, evaluating its potential in the adsorptive capacity of the drug sodium diclofenac present in wastewaters. The modifications on the clay structure were investigated by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, thermogravimetric, differential thermal analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, surface area by N2 adsorption (77.5 K) and Zeta potential. The experimental design was carried out to find the best conditions for the adsorption tests, in which concentration, mass and pH were significant. In the kinetic study, the pseudo-second-order model better described the adsorption process for acid and organo-functionalized samples. Such results indicate that the adsorption behavior probably occurs due to the phenomenon of chemisorption. Regarding the adsorption isotherms, the Langmuir model was the one that best adjusted both the experimental data of acid and the organo-functionalized samples, whose maximum adsorption capacity were 179.88 and 253.34 mg/g, respectively. This model also indicates that the sodium diclofenac is adsorbed to monolayers homogeneously through chemisorption. In general, the studied clays proved to be suitable adsorbents for the removal of sodium diclofenac.

Alkali-activated materials (AAMs) were produced using residues from the red ceramic industry as a precursor, and sodium hydroxide (NaOH), potassium hydroxide (KOH), and sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) as alkaline activators. The effect of activators and curing conditions on physical-mechanical properties and durability were evaluated. The processing parameters (amount of water and consistency index) and the activation conditions (the activator contents and curing temperature) were defined based on an experimental design getting the flexural rupture module as the response. The durability behavior was evaluated by natural aging, accelerated aging (simulated rain test), exposure to the marine environment (salt fog), and acidic environments (HCl and H2SO4). The results showed that the NaOH- and KOH-activated samples exhibited inferior mechanical behavior than those activated with Na2SiO3. In the durability studies, due to leaching, there was a decrease in mechanical strength when samples are subjected to aggressive exposure conditions. However, the strength values are still higher than the minimum indicated for traditional ceramic applications.

This study presents the development of new eco-friendly mortar compositions containing kaolin residues (KR) and assesses their durability behavior. Firstly, the natural and calcinated kaolin residues (600 °C, 650 °C, 700 °C, 750 °C, and 800 °C) were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA), granulometric analysis, and surface area. The kaolin residue calcinated at 800 °C was chosen to be added to new compositions of mortar because it presented the best pozzolanic performance. The aging tests accomplished in internal (Ei) and external (Ee) environments were applied in mortars with a mass proportion of 1:2:6 (cement + KR: lime: sand), in which the KR, calcinated at 800 °C, replaced the cement in the mass fraction of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 30%. The Ei was performed for 30, 60, 90, 180, and 360 days, and the Ee for 90, 210, 360, and 512 days. After the aging tests were completed, the mortar compositions containing KR were evaluated to determine their mineralogical phases (XRD), compressive strength (CS), and thermal behavior (DTA and thermogravimetry). In summary, the KR addition to the mortar compositions decreases the mechanical resistance to compression, however, mortars with a substitution of 10% and 20% presented resistance values within the minimum limit of 2.4 MPa established by ASTM C 270.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has attracted interest for sensory applications due to its high surface area and the high density of active adsorption sites. This review shows the effect of the nanostructure, synthesis technique, operating temperature, target gas, and the impact of incorporating metallic elements on the detection properties of TiO2. The studies showed that the TiO2 gas detection process is closely related to surface reactions. Therefore, sensing properties, such as sensitivity, response time, and recovery, vary with factors that influence the surface reactions, such as chemical elements, morphology, microstructure of the depletion layer, and operating temperature.

The development of alternatives for wear protection in surface engineering can be responsible for a significant decrease in energy waste as a large amount of the energy produced in the world is lost due to tribological contact. Dynamic Glancing Angle Deposition has been recently evaluated as a route to produce coatings with improved wear performance. In this technique, the substrate oscillates along with a determined range in front of the sputtering target during the growth of the film. In this study, five oscillatory ranges (0, ±5°, ±10°, ±15°, ±20°) were probed to manufacture nanostructured Cr-Al-N coatings using direct current magnetron sputtering, and their impact was investigated on the grain morphology, phase formation, chemical composition, and performance of the coatings. FEG-SEM revealed the formation of multilayer-like architecture across the grains of the coatings. The deposition rate and hardness improved, and a more than 2-fold decrease in the material loss was observed in a comparison between the stationary-deposited conventional coating and the sample produced under ±10° oscillatory range. This indicated the potential use of this technique in future surface engineering applications.

Tailing incorporation into mortars has been the subject of much research in recent years. Despite this, most of these studies did not investigate the harmful effects resulting from the exposure of such mortars to an environment containing aggressive agents. This work investigated the effects of perlite tailing addition into mortars containing cement CP V-ARI MAX and hydrated lime. The raw materials were subjected to chemical characterization (X-ray fluorescence (XRF)) and mineralogical (X-ray diffraction (XRD)), while the samples immersed in 1 N NaOH solution were characterized by XRD, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and compression strength (CS). The results showed the harmful effects of incorporating perlite tailings into the mortar investigated. Such a degradation was proven by linear expansion and compressive strength experiments accomplished in the samples after the test of resistance to an alkali–silicate reaction.

The effect of heat treatment on the adsorptive capacity of a Brazilian palygorskite to remove the dyes crystal violet (CV) and congo red (CR) was investigated. The natural palygorskite was calcined at different temperatures (300, 500 and 700 °C) for 4 h. Changes in the palygorskite structure were evaluated using X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis, N2 adsorption/desorption and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The adsorption efficiency of CV and CR was investigated through the effect of initial concentration, contact time, temperature, pH and dosage of adsorbent. The calcination increased the adsorption capacity of palygorskite, and the greatest adsorption capacity of CV and CR dyes occurred in the sample calcined at 700 °C (Pal-700T). The natural and calcined samples at 300 and 500 °C followed the Freundlich isothermal model, while the Pal-700T followed the Langmuir isothermal model. Adsorption kinetics results were well described by the Elovich model. Pal-700T showed better adsorption performance at basic pH, with removal greater than 98%, for both dyes. Pal-700T proved to be a great candidate for removing cationic and anionic dyes present in water.

The ceramic fibers can be obtained from different techniques. Due to the technological development, searches are performed to improve the existing fibers. Thus, recent studies have enabled the development of an unprecedented synthesis route for the production of nanofibers, the Solution Blow Spinning (SBS). In this context, the present work proposes to develop silica nanofibers doped with silver by the SBS method, evaluating parameters such as: silver content and acidification of solutions. The fibers were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The results of XRD showed that the samples with 4% silver that were not acidified showed the most defined and intense characteristic peaks. The SEM showed the formation of fibers with diameters in the nanometer range independent of acidification or not of the solutions, with reduction of the agglomerates in the samples with 2% silver.

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is a bioceramic widely studied due to its chemical similarity with the mineral component of bones. Besides, it is biocompatible, bioactive and thermodynamically stable in the body fluid what poses it as an attractive material for a wide range of applications in the biomedical field. Several efforts have been focused on the synthesis of particles of this material aiming to the precise control of size and morphology, porosity and surface area. HAp is widely used as an implant for bone tissue regeneration, as a coating for metallic implants and in a drug-controlled release. In this sense, the objective of this review is to gather information related to HAp, providing readers with information about synthesis methods, material characteristics and their applications. Resumo A hidroxiapatita (HAp) é uma biocerâmica amplamente estudada devido à sua similaridade química com o componente mineral dos ossos. Além disso, é biocompatível, bioativa e termodinamicamente estável no fluido corporal, o que a coloca como um material atraente para uma ampla gama de aplicações no campo biomédico. Diversos esforços têm sido focados na síntese de partículas deste material visando o controle preciso de tamanho e morfologia, porosidade e área superficial. HAp é amplamente utilizada como implante para a regeneração do tecido ósseo, como revestimento para implantes metálicos e na liberação controlada de drogas. Neste sentido, o objetivo desta revisão é reunir informações relacionadas à HAp, fornecendo aos leitores informações sobre os métodos de síntese, características do material e suas aplicações.

In this work technical ceramics containing industrial inorganic wastes was carried out. Ceramic formulations prepared with clay, magnesium oxide and residues of kaolin and alumina as raw materials, were formed in a disk-shaped specimens using the uniaxial pressing process and sintering at temperatures from 950°C to 1400°C. The mineralogical, physical and dielectric characteristics of the fired samples were investigated. The dielectric properties, the relative dielectric constant (er) and the loss tangent (tan δ) were evaluated at frequencies of 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 kHz at room temperature. Mullite and cordierite were present as major phases at the highest temperatures. Relative dielectric constant values closest to that of mullite (er = ~ 5 to ~ 6) and cordierite (er = ~ 4 to ~ 6) at 1 kHz. On the other hand, the lowest dielectric losses (tan δ ~ 0.06 to ~ 0.04) were observed for the formulations containing the mullite major phase, and tan δ ~ 0.009 to ~ 0.003 for formulations that showed cordierite as main phase. It was verified that an increase in temperature promoted a reduction of porosity, a property that had a direct influence on the dielectric properties of the formulations. The materials obtained from the residues presented low dielectric constants and loss tangents, which make them suitable for use in electrical and electronic systems.

Natural stones (limestones, granites, and marble) from mines located in northeastern Brazil were investigated to discover their potential for use in civil construction. The natural stones were characterized by chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, and optical microscopy. The physical-mechanical properties (apparent density, porosity, water absorption, compressive and flexural strength, impact, and abrasion) and chemical resistance properties were also evaluated. The results of the physical-mechanical analysis indicated that the natural stones investigated have the potential to be used in different environments (interior, exterior), taking into account factors such as people’s circulation and exposure to chemical agents.

The effect of acid treatment on the adsorptive capacity of a Brazilian palygorskite to remove the crystal violet (CV) and congo red (CR) dyes was investigated. The raw palygorskite was acid-treated by different HCl solutions (2, 4, and 6 mol/L). The modifications on the palygorskite structure were investigated using X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, N2 adsorption/desorption, and thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis. The efficiency of CV and CR adsorption was investigated, and the effect of the initial concentration, contact time, pH, and adsorbent amount was analyzed. The results revealed that CV adsorption in the acid-treated palygorskite was higher than that of the raw material. A Langmuir isotherm model was observed for the adsorption behavior of CV, while a Freundlich isotherm model was verified for the CR adsorption. A pseudo-second-order model was observed for the adsorption kinetics of both dyes. The higher CV adsorption capacity was observed at basic pH, higher than 97%, and the higher CR removal was observed at acidic pH, higher than 50%. The adsorption parameters of enthalpy (ΔH), entropy (ΔS), and Gibbs energy (ΔG) were evaluated. The adsorption process of the CV and CR dyes on the raw and acid-treated Brazilian palygorskite was predominantly endothermic and occurred spontaneously. The studied raw palygorskite has a mild-adsorption capacity to remove anionic dyes, while acid-treated samples effectively remove cationic dyes.

1D (one-dimensional) hollow nanofibers are of great technological interest. Their formation can be controlled by tuning the calcination process. However, the formation mechanism through the control of the burning stage is still debated in the literature. Herein, the influence of calcination in two steps on the morphology of hollow nanofibers of nickel oxide (NiO), prepared by solution blow spinning (SBS) technique, was investigated. A systematic study using a variety of characterization techniques suggests that a prolonged residence time in the initial step of calcination produces nanofibers with a better definition of the hollow region with better control of tubular wall thickness. Statistically, the calcination methodology studied here does not affect the outer diameter of nanofibers, as shown by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s method. According to our findings, the formation mechanism is influenced by gas diffusion and phase separation during fiber spinning and heat treatment, which suggests that neither the Kirkendall effect nor the Ostwald ripening process can be solely responsible for the formation hollow fibers. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the formation of metal-oxide hollow nanofibers induced by heat treatment.

RESUMO Mulita é um material que tem recebido atenção especial devido às suas propriedades químicas, físicas e mecânicas, que estão correlacionadas com o método de síntese utilizado. O método sol-gel destaca-se frente aos outros métodos químicos devido à possibilidade de obtenção de materiais com elevado grau de pureza e baixas temperaturas de síntese. Sendo assim, este trabalho teve por objetivo a análise dos solventes água, álcool etílico, álcool isopropílico e tetrahidrofurano, na obtenção de mulita por meio da rota sol-gel. As amostras foram caracterizadas por difração de raios X (DRX), análise termogravimétrica e diferencial (TG/ATD), adsorção de nitrogênio, microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e microscopia eletrônica de transmissão (MET). Os resultados mostraram que a mulita foi sintetizada com todos os solventes, porém, o uso dos álcoois como solvente proporcionou a obtenção das amostras mais cristalinas, com as menores perdas de massa, com uma morfologia formada por agregados e partículas individualizadas. ABSTRACT Mullite is a material that has received special attention due to its chemical, physical and mechanical properties, which are correlated with the synthesis method used. The sol-gel method stands out compared to other chemical methods due to the possibility of obtaining materials with a high degree of purity and low synthesis temperatures. Thus, this work aimed to analyze the solvents water, ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol and tetrahydrofuran, in obtaining mullite using the sol-gel route. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric and differential analysis (TG/DTA), nitrogen adsorption (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (MET). The results showed that mullite was synthesized with all solvents, however, the use of alcohols as a solvent provided the obtaining of the most crystalline samples, with the lowest mass losses, with a morphology formed by aggregates and individualized particles.

The combination of biocompatible polymers and ceramics shows great promise in the development of composites with suitable mechanical properties for dental applications. In an attempt to further expand this research line, Al2O3 commercial powders (Vitro-ceram, Alglass, In-ceram) were sintered at 1400 °C for 2 h and infiltrated with poly(methyl methacrylate) for potential use in dental prostheses. The infiltration was performed using a homemade apparatus under a pressure of 7 bar for 6 and 12 h. The microstructure (studied using a scanning electron microscope), Archimedes density, 3-point bending flexural strength and Vickers hardness of the prepared composites were assessed and quantitatively compared. In general, microstructural analyses showed ceramic- and polymer-based interpenetrating network in all materials. The preforms infiltrated for 12 h showed superior properties, among them, the Vitro-ceram-based composite also demonstrated a near-zero open porosity and optimum mechanical characteristics. Specifically, its density, strength and hardness were 2.6 ± 0.07 g/cm3, 119.3 ± 5.0 MPa and 1055.1 ± 111.0 HV, respectively, passing the acceptance criteria of ISO 6872 and making it suitable for consideration as a metal-free structure for dental crowns and fixed partial prostheses until three anterior units.

Ceramic nanofibers have been shown to be a new horizon of research in the biomedical area, due to their differentiated morphology, nanoroughness, nanotopography, wettability, bioactivity, and chemical functionalization properties. Therefore, considering the impact caused by the use of these nanofibers, and the fact that there are still limited data available in the literature addressing the ceramic nanofiber application in regenerative medicine, this review article aims to gather the state-of-the-art research concerning these materials, for potential use as a biomaterial for wound healing and bone regeneration, and to analyze their characteristics when considering their application.
