Long-term consumption of groundwater containing elevated levels of arsenic (As) can have severe health consequences, including cancer. To effectively remove As, conventional treatment technologies require expensive chemical oxidants to oxidise neutral arsenite (As(III)) in groundwater to negatively charged arsenate (As(V)), which is more easily removed. Rapid sand filter beds used in conventional aeration-filtration to treat anaerobic groundwater can naturally oxidise As(III) through biological processes but require an additional step to remove the generated As(V), adding complexity and cost. This study introduces a novel approach where As(V), produced through biological As(III) oxidation in a sand filter, is effectively removed within the same filter by embedding and operating an iron electrocoagulation (FeEC) system inside the filter. Operating FeEC within the biological filter achieved higher As(III) removal (81 %) compared to operating FeEC in the filter supernatant (67 %). This performance was similar to an analogous embedded-FeEC system treating As(V)-contaminated water (85 %), confirming the benefits of incorporating FeEC in a biological bed for comparable As(III) and As(V) removal. However, operating FeEC in the sand matrix consumed more energy (14 Wh/m3) compared to FeEC operated in a water matrix (7 Wh/m3). The efficiency of As removal increased and energy requirements decreased in such embedded-FeEC systems by deep-bed infiltration of Fe(III)-precipitates, which can be controlled by adjusting flow rate and pH. This study is one of the first to demonstrate the feasibility of embedding FeEC systems in sand filters for groundwater arsenic removal. Sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) is widely used for the chemical cleaning of fouled ultrafiltration (UF) membranes. Various studies performed on polymeric membranes demonstrate that long-term (>100 h) exposure to NaClO deteriorates the physicochemical properties of the membranes, leading to reduced performance and service life. However, the effect of NaClO cleaning on ceramic membranes, particularly the number of cleaning cycles they can undergo to alleviate irreversible fouling, remains poorly understood. Silicon carbide (SiC) membranes have garnered widespread attention for water and wastewater treatment, but their chemical stability in NaClO has not been studied. Low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LP-CVD) provides a simple and economical route to prepare/modify ceramic membranes. As such, LP-CVD facilitates the preparation of SiC membranes: (a) in a single step; and (b) at much lower temperatures (700–900 °C) in comparison with sol-gel methods (ca. 2000 °C). In this work, SiC ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were prepared via LP-CVD at two different deposition temperatures and pressures. Subsequently, their chemical stability in NaClO was investigated over 200 h of aging. Afterward, the properties and performance of as-prepared SiC UF membranes were evaluated before and after aging to determine the optimal deposition conditions. Our results indicate that the SiC UF membrane prepared via LP-CVD at 860 °C and 100 mTorr exhibited excellent resistance to NaClO aging, while the membrane prepared at 750 °C and 600 mTorr significantly deteriorated. These findings not only highlight a novel preparation route for SiC membranes in a single step via LP-CVD, but also provide new insights about the careful selection of LP-CVD conditions for SiC membranes to ensure their long-term performance and robustness under harsh chemical cleaning conditions., Sanitary Engineering, ChemE/Product and Process Engineering

Worldwide, a considerable amount of oily wastewater is generated, with oil droplets from 2 to 200 nm that are difficult to separate because of their size and colloidal stability. This study presents a novel approach for effectively separating microemulsions via cubic silicon carbide (3C-SiC)-coated alumina (Al 2O 3) membranes fabricated based on low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD). SiC was deposited at a relatively low temperature at 860 °C on 100 nm Al 2O 3 membranes using two precursors: SiH 2Cl 2 and C 2H 2. With the increase in deposition time, up to 25 min, the pore size decreased from 41 nm to 33 nm, which is a smaller pore size of a SiC membrane than previously used for oil/water separation. The polycrystalline 3C-SiC-coated membranes showed improved hydrophilicity (water contact angle of 15°) and highly negatively charged surfaces (−65 mV). Microemulsion filtration experiments were carried out at a constant permeate flux (80 Lm −2 h −1) for six cycles with varying deposition time, pH, surfactant types, and pore sizes. The fouling of the SiC-coated membrane was, compared to the Al 2O 3 membrane, effectively mitigated due to the enhanced electrostatic repulsion and hydrophilicity. Surfactant adsorption mainly occurred when the surface charge of the microemulsion and the membranes were opposite. Therefore, the surface charge of the alumina membrane changed from positive to negative when soaked in negatively charged microemulsions, whereas SiC-coated membranes remained negatively charged regardless of surfactant type. The membrane fouling was alleviated when the membrane and oil droplets had the same charge. Lastly, the 62 nm SiC-coated membrane with 20 min coating time was the best choice for the filtration of the microemulsion, because of the high rejection of the oil droplets and low fouling tendency., Sanitary Engineering, Complex Fluid Processing

The present study investigated the utilization of blood clam shells as a potential substitute for conventional media, as well as the influence of the acclimation time on the efficacy of an intermittent slow sand filter (ISSF) in the treatment of real domestic wastewater. ISSF was operated with 16 h on and 8 h off, focusing on the parameters of turbidity, ammonia, and phosphate. Two media combinations (only blood clam shells [CC] and sand + blood clam shells [SC]) were operated under two different acclimatization periods (14 and 28 d). Results showed that SC medium exhibited significantly higher removal of turbidity (p < 0.05) as compared to CC medium (45.99 ± 26.84 % vs. 3.79 ± 9.35 %), while CC exhibited slightly higher (p > 0.05) removal of ammonia (23.12 ± 20.2 % vs. 16.77 ± 16.8 %) and phosphate (18.03 ± 11.96 % vs 13.48 ± 12 %). Comparing the acclimatization periods, the 28 d of acclimatization period showed higher overall performances than the 14 d. Further optimizations need to be conducted to obtain an effluent value below the national permissible limit, since the ammonia and phosphate parameters are still slightly higher. Catalytic ceramic nanofiltration (NF) is a promising technology for direct wastewater reclamation, given its high separation selectivity and reactive surfaces for oxidative removal of fouling. A better understanding of the relation between fouling types and oxidative cleaning efficacy under high organic loading conditions is of practical importance for realizing stable filtration/cleaning performance in long-term water reclamation operations. In this work, Fenton cleaning, using a hydrogen peroxide solution and an iron oxychloride catalyst pre-coat layer on top of commercially available ceramic NF membranes, was studied with respect to high organic loaded fouling, simulated by a concentrated sodium alginate solution in the presence of calcium. Adsorption (in the absence of a permeate flow) and constant-pressure filtration (with a permeate flow) experiments were performed to distinguish between permeance decreases as a result of either adsorptive or cake layer fouling. The results show that the flux evolution could be divided into an initial sharp flux decline, due to rapid adsorption of the foulants, and a subsequent gradual flux decrease, resulting from progressive cake build-up on the membrane. The two-stage flux decrease was enhanced during the constant-pressure filtration experiments, because they start at a high flux with a high fouling rate, while the flux gradually decreases as fouling proceeds. During multiple adsorption/cake filtration/Fenton cleaning cycles, the cake layer fouling was sufficiently removed by Fenton cleaning in contrast to the adsorptive fouling. However, the total permeate production during ceramic NF was not influenced by the remaining adsorptive fouling (after cleaning), since the adsorptive fouling always only occurs at the beginning of each cycle. Biofilters are effectively used for drinking water treatment. However, the long ripening time of virgin media for manganese (Mn) removal is a major concern. In this study, the influence of the flow regime on the ripening time of virgin pumice medium was investigated. For this purpose, pilot-scale experiments were performed to compare the start-up of flow-through and recirculating filter columns using inherent inoculation with the same groundwater source. The systems were operated at 2 m·h1 with gradual flow increments up to 5 m·h1 and avoiding Fe-loading. Effective Mn removal (.90%) in flow-through and recirculating columns was achieved after 8 and 23 days, respectively. Flow-through columns reached compliance with a local drinking water criterion (Mn, 0.1 mg·L1) at 15 cm filter depth in 11 days. Recirculating filter columns required 32 days to reach compliance at 30 cm depth. The start-up in recirculation regime resulted in a water consumption reduction of about 50% compared with flow-through regime. The intermittent provision of the Mn-loading in recirculating regime impacted the Mn-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) concentration in the pumice stone medium. Both flow regimes required a similar total Mn-loading (0.16 and 0.11 kg·Mn·m2, respectively), suggesting that Mn-loading was the limiting factor for the ripening of pumice., Sanitary Engineering

Endogeneity or reverse causality in regression analysis results in biased estimation of the effects of independent variables on the dependent variable and leads to inaccurate interpretations. However, the biased estimation of the effects of psychological factors on water–related behaviours are rarely discussed. This study investigated the endogeneity of psychological factors in water-related behaviour using an instrument variable (IV) approach. Data from eight household water treatment (HWT) studies in Asia, Africa, and South America were utilized. A combination of several socio-economic characteristics, such as education and accessibility, was used as a control variable and three psychological factors, i.e., perception of risk, attitude towards HWT, and social norms, were used as the predictors of the adoption of HWT. Variables related to institutional quality of the countries, based on the World Governance Indicators of the World Bank were used as IVs to predict the psychological factors. The results suggest that endogeneity exists in water-related behavioural studies. Institutions were found to be valid IV for psychological factors attitude and norms, but not for the perception of risk. This suggests that the institutional quality influences households’ attitude and norms regarding behaviour. If the feedback effect of actual behaviour on the psychological factors were not considered, the effects of attitude and norms on HWT adoption were underestimated by 59% and 40%, respectively. Finally, despite the challenge of finding valid IV, the endogeneity effect of psychological factors needs to be controlled when estimating the effect of psychological factors on water-related behaviour in future water-related behavioural studies., Sanitary Engineering, Water Resources, Water Management

Ceramic membranes have drawn increasing attention in oily wastewater treatment as an alternative to their traditional polymeric counterparts, yet persistent membrane fouling is still one of the largest challenges. Particularly, little is known about ceramic membrane fouling by oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions in constant flux filtration modes. In this study, the effects of emulsion chemistry (surfactant concentration, pH, salinity and Ca2+) and operation parameters (permeate flux and filtration time) were comparatively evaluated for alumina and silicon carbide (SiC) deposited ceramic membranes, with different physicochemical surface properties. The original membranes were made of 100% alumina, while the same membranes were also deposited with a SiC layer to change the surface charge and hydrophilicity. The SiC-deposited membrane showed a lower reversible and irreversible fouling when permeate flux was below 110 L m−2 h−1. In addition, it exhibited a higher permeance recovery after physical and chemical cleaning, as compared to the alumina membranes. Increasing sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) concentration in the feed decreased the fouling of both membranes, but to a higher extent in the alumina membranes. The fouling of both membranes could be reduced with increasing the pH of the emulsion due to the enhanced electrostatic repulsion between oil droplets and membrane surface. Because of the screening of surface charge in a high salinity solution (100 mM NaCl), only a small difference in irreversible fouling was observed for alumina and SiC-deposited membranes under these conditions. The presence of Ca2+ in the emulsion led to high irreversible fouling of both membranes, because of the compression of diffusion double layer and the interactions between Ca2+ and SDS. There is a global need for optimizing the use of water that has resulted from increased demand due to industrial development, population growth, climate change and the pollution of natural water resources. One of the solutions is to use reclaimed water in industrial applications that do not require water of potable quality, such as cooling water. However, for cooling water, (treated) wastewater’s hardness is too high, apart from having a high load of suspended solids and organic matter. Therefore, a combination of softening with ceramic micro-filtration was proposed for treating wastewater treatment effluent containing fouling agents for potential use in industrial cooling systems. The effectiveness of the softening process on model-treated wastewater with calcium hydroxide in the presence of phosphate and sodium alginate was first evaluated using jar tests. Furthermore, membrane fouling was studied when filtering the softened water. The results showed that the inhibition of calcium carbonate precipitation occurred when inorganic substances, such as phosphate and organic compounds, were present in the water. The fouling of the membranes due to sodium alginate in water was only slightly negatively affected when combined with softening and phosphate. Therefore, this combination of treatments could be potentially helpful for the post-treatment of secondary effluent for cooling systems., Sanitary Engineering

Groundwater contaminated with arsenic (As) must be treated prior to drinking, as human exposure to As at toxic levels can cause various diseases including cancer. Conventional aeration-filtration applied to anaerobic arsenite (As(III)) contaminated groundwater can remove As(III) by co-oxidizing native iron (Fe(II)) and As(III) with oxygen (O2). However, the As(III) removal efficiency of conventional aeration can be low, in part, because of incomplete As(III) oxidation to readily-sorbed arsenate (As(V)). In this work, we investigated a new approach to enhance As(III) co-removal with native Fe(II) by the anaerobic addition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) prior to aeration. Experiments were performed to co-oxidize Fe(II) and As(III) with H2O2 (anaerobically), O2 (aerobically), and by sequentially adding of H2O2 and O2. Aqueous As(III) and As(V) measurements after the reaction were coupled with solid-phase speciation by Fe and As K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). We found that complete anaerobic oxidation of 100 µM Fe(II) with 100 µM H2O2 resulted in co-removal of 95% of 7 µM As(III) compared to 44% with 8.0-9.0 mg/L dissolved O2. Furthermore, we found that with 100 µM Fe(II), the initial Fe(II):H2O2 ratio was a critical parameter to remove 7 µM As(III) to below the 10 µg/L (0.13 µM) WHO guideline, where ratios of 1:4 (mol:mol) Fe(II):H2O2 led to As(III) removal matching that of 7 µM As(V). The improved As(III) removal with H2O2 was found to occur partly because of the well-established enhanced efficiency of As(III) oxidation in Fe(II)+H2O2 systems relatively to Fe(II)+O2 systems. It was widely acknowledged that dissolved organic matter (DOM) in natural water has ubiquitous competitiveness against organic micropollutants (OMPs) during adsorption onto activated carbon. However, some (model) low molecular weight organics have been reported to adsorb onto activated carbon, but were not competitive against co-adsorbates. The objective of this study is to identify which adsorbable DOM fractions in natural water contribute to the DOM competitiveness, and what is the impact of the OMP adsorbability and initial OMP concentration on this competitiveness. We, therefore, disassociated the adsorption of DOM fractions and OMPs (carbamazepine, caffeine and sulfamethoxazole) using a two-stage adsorption procedure, removing various adsorbable DOM fractions with powdered activated carbon pretreatment and then unraveling the competitiveness against OMPs of the remaining DOM. Our results demonstrated that DOM competition was not ubiquitous for all adsorbable fractions in natural water, and ∼ 25% of the adsorbable DOM was not competitive. The poorly adsorbable DOM was shown to be a non-competitive co-adsorbate, and its complexation even elevated the adsorption capacity of one of the OMPs (carbamazepine). The amount of DOM competitors increased for weaker adsorbable OMPs, and at higher initial OMP concentrations. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the possibilities of using treated wastewater for the production of unreinforced concrete blocks. Compressive strength, water absorption and morphology tests of concrete blocks, produced from different makeups of mixing water, drinking water, drinking water spiked with ammonium and phosphate, and the effluent of the city’s wastewater treatment plant, were evaluated. Results showed that the compressive strength of blocks manufactured using treated wastewater was as high as of the blocks produced using drinking water. Ammonium, phosphate and chlorine were found not to have a negative effect on the strength of the blocks. Water absorption tests confirmed the results of the compressive strength, as lower humidity was found in cases of higher strength. In the process of cement hydration, crystals of calcium silicate and calcium hydroxide were observed by morphology tests. From the variability in the results, it could be concluded that the quality of the mixing water was not the only factor that influenced the strength of the unreinforced concrete blocks. Water withdrawals around the world have increased almost twice as fast as the population during the last century. Higher than expected water demand is leading to water scarcity and causing rapid depletion of water tables around the world. One reason behind the higher than expected demand is the inefficient use of water. Inefficient use of water affects the well-being of society, the economic stability of countries, and environmental health. Indeed, water use efficiency (WUE) is one of the pillars of sustainable development goals (SDG 6.4.1). However, progress toward achieving WUE is slow, especially for many developing countries where the degradation of natural resources is critical, economic growth is slow, and there are few strong institutions to coordinate actions. One reason behind inefficient water use is human behavior. A variety of contextual and psychological factors underlie the behavior. The contextual factors include socioeconomic, technical, institutional, and environmental factors and the behavioral factors include factors associated with the perception of risk, attitudes, norms, etc. Yet, few studies consider an integrated view of these factors in shaping water use behavior. This paper consolidates contextual and behavioral factors which influence water use, studies the gaps in our understanding of human water behavior underlying WUE and highlights the need to comprehensive assess and consistently measure such factors and their relationships. Based on the gaps identified, it proposes a conceptual model that connects contextual and behavioral factors and represents potential cause-effect relationships as supported by various environmental behavior approaches and psychological theories. Biofiltration for Mn removal has not been proven in the tropics (18-29 °C). Also, the use of pumice as an alternative filter medium for Mn removal is still poorly known. In this study, a bench-scale biofiltration experiment, using virgin pumice, silica sand, and anthracite, was conducted for 107 days using tropical groundwater at 22 °C. Characterization of manganese oxide (MnOx) on filter media was carried out by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The ability of culturable bacteria to oxidize Mn was verified by the leucoberbelin blue dye assay (LBB). The microbial activity on filter media was studied by ATP analyses. Identification of the MOB was performed by 16S rRNA sequencing. Results showed that the ripening time in each column was similar (∼80 days); therefore, the filter media and water temperature do not seem to accelerate the start-up period. The MnOx present on all ripened media was of the birnessite type. The MnOx morphology, influent water parameters, and microbiological activity suggest a start-up period likely assisted by biological oxidation. Therefore, biofiltration for manganese removal is feasible under tropical conditions. The similarity in the performance of pumice with the other media confirmed its suitability for biotic Mn removal. All materials presented similar known MOB at the genus level; however, different closest related species colonized selectively the filter media. Two strains of Pseudoxanthomonas sp., a not recognized genus on matured biofilters, look promising as inoculums in pumice and sand. Membrane filtration is considered to be one of the most promising methods for oily wastewater treatment. Because of their hydrophilic surface, ceramic membranes show less fouling compared with their polymeric counterparts. Membrane fouling, however, is an inevitable phenomenon in the filtration process, leading to higher energy consumption and a shorter lifetime of the membrane. It is therefore important to improve the fouling resistance of the ceramic membranes in oily wastewater treatment. In this review, we first focus on the various methods used for ceramic membrane modification, aiming for application in oily wastewater. Then, the performance of the modified ceramic membranes is discussed and compared. Storage containers are usually used to provide a constant water head in decentralized, community groundwater treatment systems for the removal of iron (Fe) and arsenic (As). However, the commonly practiced aeration prior to storage assists in rapid and complete Fe2+ oxidation, resulting in poor As removal, despite sufficient native-Fe2+ in the source water. In this study, it was found that application of anoxic storage enhanced As removal from groundwater, containing ≥300 µg/L of As(III) and 2.33 mg/L of Fe2+ in an As affected village of Rajshahi district in Bangladesh. Although the oxidation of Fe2+ and As(III) during oxic storage was considerably faster, the As/Fe removal ratio was higher during anoxic storage (61–80±5 µgAs/mgFe) compared to the oxic storage (45±5 µgAs/mgFe). This higher As removal efficacy in anoxic storage containers could not be attributed to the speciation of As, since As(V) concentrations were higher during oxic storage due to more favorable abiotic (As(III) oxidation by O2 and Fenton-like intermediates) and biotic (As(III) oxidizing bacteria, e.g., Sideroxydans, Gallionella, Hydrogenophaga) conditions. Ceramic nanofiltration (NF) is a newly-developed technology for water recycling, but is still limited to pilot-scale applications. Lacking efficient and eco-friendly strategies for cleaning ceramic NF membrane impedes its scaling-up in industries. Forward flush, backwash and acidic/caustic cleaning are not efficient enough. In this work, a novel oxalic acid-aided Fenton process was proposed for synergistic relaxation/oxidation of persistent Ca2+-mediated gel-like fouling of ceramic NF membrane. A reactive catalyst layer was online pre-coated on top of the membrane via a pressure-driven cross-flow pre-filtration of Fe3O4 hydrosols. The gel-like fouling was simulated by alginate in the presence of Ca2+ ions. Results show that the Fe3O4 loading could be readily tuned from 0.16 to 1.34 g m−2 by altering the permeate flux during the pre-coating. The membrane permeability loss due to the pre-coating was minimal (<10%). The combination of oxalic acid chelation and Fenton-based oxidation resulted in high flux recovery (85.07%) for the iron-oxide pre-coated membrane, whereas the single treatment by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) or oxalic acid was inefficient. This synergistic effect was attributed to relaxation of the Ca2+-mediated gel layer via oxalic acid/Ca2+ chelation, which presumably facilitated H2O2 diffusion at the Fe3O4/foulant interface. The iron-oxide pre-coated membrane maintained stable initial normalized fluxes (83.33–90.15%) through the oxalic acid/H2O2 cleaning over five cycles, with no need of refreshing the iron-oxide pre-coat. Excessive F- in drinking water due to natural and anthropogenic activities is a serious health hazard affecting humans worldwide. In this study, a comparative assessment was made of eight mineral-based materials with advantageous structural properties for F- uptake: layered-double-hydroxides (LDHs), geopolymers, softening pellets and struvite. These materials are considered low-cost, for being either a waste or by-product, or can be locally-sourced. It can be concluded that Ca-based materials showed the strongest affinity for F- (Ca-Al-CO3 LDHs, slag-based geopolymer, softening pellets). The Langmuir adsorption capacity of Ca-Al-CO3 LDHs, slag-based geopolymer and softening pellets was observed to be 20.83, 5.23 and 1.20 mg/g, respectively. The main mechanism of F- uptake on Ca-Al-CO3 LDHs, Mg-Al-Cl LDHs, slag-based geopolymers and softening pellets was found to be sorption at low initial F- concentrations (<10 mg/L) whereas precipitation as CaF2 is proposed to play a major role at higher initial F- concentrations (>20 mg/L). Although the softening pellets had the highest Ca-content (96-97%; XRF), their dense structure and consequent low BET surface area (2–3 m2/g), resulted in poorer performance than the Ca-based LDHs and slag-based geopolymers. Background: There is increasing recognition of the complexity underlying WASH conditions in developing countries. This article explores the complexity by assessing the vulnerability of a specific area to poor WASH conditions using a qualitative approach. Methods: We present our findings for the district of East Sumba in Indonesia. This area is known as one of the poorest regions in Indonesia with inadequate WASH services, indigenous belief that hinder the practice of WASH-related behaviours, and has a high rate of children malnutrition. All the factors that contribute to poor WASH conditions were discussed through the lens of the Financial, Institutional, Environmental, Technological, and Social (FIETS) framework. We then summarised the factors and visualized the “system” using a mind map which shows how factors are interconnected and helps to find the root causes of poor WASH conditions. Results: There are three main challenges that inhibit the improvement of WASH conditions in this area: inadequate institutional capacity, water scarcity, and poor socio-economic conditions. We found that a village leader is the most important actor who influences the sustainability of WASH services in this area and healthcare workers are influential WASH promoters. This study also shows how culture shapes people’s daily lives and institution performance, and influences the current WASH conditions in East Sumba. The mind map shows there is an overlap and interconnection between FIEST aspects and WASH conditions in the study area. Conclusion: WASH conditions are influenced by many factors and are often interconnected with each other. Understanding this complexity is necessary to improve WASH conditions and sustain adequate WASH services in developing countries. Ion exchange (IEX) resins can remove natural organic matter (NOM) from drinking water sources. However, the IEX system produces a waste brine rich of sodium, chloride, NOM and sulfate. The treatment of the waste brine aims to recover a clean solution rich of sodium chloride, that can be reused to regenerate IEX resin. Previous research showed that ceramic nanofiltration partially removes NOM from the waste brine, but sulfate removal requires additional treatment. Sulfate removal by chemical precipitation was previously studied either on brines with low NOM concentrations or water with low concentrations of NOM and salts. The current work focussed on sulfate removal from NOM-rich brines by chemical dosing of (1) BaCl2, resulting in precipitation of barite (BaSO4), and (2) CaCl2, Ca(OH)2 and NaAlO2, resulting in precipitation of calcium sulfate and, subsequently, ettringite (Ca6Al2(SO4)3(OH)12). Additionally, the effect of NOM on SO42− removal was studied. Modelling and batch experiments were conducted with IEX and synthetic brines within the typical ion strength range of 0.1 to 1 M. With doses of 2.2 g of BaCl2 per g of initial sulfate, BaSO4 precipitation removed more than 83 percent of sulfate, resulting in final concentrations below 0.4 g/L even in the presence of NOM. However, NOM inhibited the precipitation of calcium sulfate and, subsequently, ettringite. With doses of 1.3 g of CaCl2, 0.5–0.7 g of Ca(OH)2 and 0.4–0.6 g of NaAlO2 per g of initial sulfate, calcium sulfate and ettringite precipitation removed between 8 and 95 percent of sulfate from NOM-rich brines, resulting in final concentrations between 0.8 and 2 g/L. Millions of people worldwide are exposed to excessive concentrations of fluoride (F−) from groundwater sources. Ca-Al-CO3 layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have shown promising defluoridation efficiency; however, defluoridation by Ca-Al-CO3 LDHs is highly pH sensitive. This study showed that simultaneous acidification by conventional acids, such as HCl and CO2 substantially increased the performance of Ca-Al-CO3 LDHs for F- removal at environmentally relevant concentrations (e.g., 10 mg/L) to below the WHO guideline value (1.5 mg/L), while, in comparison to other acids (HNO3, H2SO4, H3PO4), the use of HCl and CO2 does not lead to the introduction of potentially harmful or undesired anions. The addition of HCl and CO2 to LDHs suspensions did lead to changes to the LDHs structure. Leaching experiments, supported by PHREEQC modelling and characterization (SEM-EDX, XRD and FTIR), strongly suggest that the main mechanism of F- removal by Ca-Al-CO3 LDHs was F− adsorption or complexation onto/into various rehydrated mixed metal oxides which re-precipitated upon partial LDHs dissolution when acidifying., Sanitary Engineering

Generally, abstracted groundwater is aerated, leading to iron (Fe2+) oxidation to Fe3+ and precipitation as Fe3+-(hydr)oxide (HFO) flocs. This practice of passive groundwater treatment, however, is not considered a barrier for arsenic (As), as removal efficiencies vary widely (15–95%), depending on Fe/As ratio. This study hypothesizes that full utilization of the adsorption capacity of groundwater native-Fe2+ based HFO flocs is hampered by rapid Fe2+ oxidation-precipitation during aeration before or after storage. Therefore, delaying Fe2+ oxidation by the introduction of an anoxic storage step before aeration-filtration was investigated for As(III) oxidation and removal in Rajshahi (Bangladesh) with natural groundwater containing 329(±0.05) µgAs/L. The results indicated that As(III) oxidation in the oxic storage was higher with complete and rapid Fe2+ oxidation (2±0.01 mg/L) than in the anoxic storage system, where Fe2+ oxidation was partial (1.03±0.32 mg/L), but the oxidized As(V)/Fe removal ratio was comparatively higher for the anoxic storage system. The low pH (6.9) and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration (0.24 mg/L) in the anoxic storage limited the rapid oxidation of Fe2+ and facilitated more As(V) removal. The groundwater native-Fe2+ (2.33±0.03 mg/L) removed 61% of As in the oxic system (storage-aeration-filtration), whereas 92% As removal was achieved in the anoxic system., Sanitary Engineering

Arsenic (As) is a toxic element present in many (ground)water sources in the world. Most conventional As removal techniques require pre-oxidation of the neutral arsenite (As(III)) species to the negatively charged arsenate (As(V)) oxyanion to optimize As removal and minimize chemical use. In this work, a novel, continuous-flow As removal system was developed that combines biological As(III) oxidation by bacteria with Fe electrocoagulation (EC), an Fe(0)-based electrochemical technology that generates reactive Fe(III) precipitates to bind As. The bio-integrated FeEC system (bio-FeEC) showed effective oxidation and removal of 150 µg/L As(III), without the need of chemicals. To remove As to below the WHO guideline of 10 µg/L, 10 times lower charge dosage was required for the bio-FeEC system compared to conventional FeEC. This lower Fe dosage requirement reduced sludge production and energy consumption. The As(III) oxidizing biomass was found to consist of bacteria belonging to Comamonadaceae, Rhodobacteraceae and Acidovorax, which are capable of oxidizing As(III) and are common in drinking water biofilms. Characterization of the As-laden Fe solids by X-ray absorption spectroscopy indicated that both bio-FeEC and conventional FeEC produced solids consistent with a mixture of lepidocrocite and 2-line ferrihydrite. Continuous development of industry and civilization has led to changes in composition, texture and toxicity of waste water due to the wide range of pollutants being present. Considering that the conventional wastewater treatment methods are insufficient for removing micropollutants and nutrients to a high level, other, alternative, treatment methods should be used to polish wastewater treatment plant effluents. In this study we developed an alternative, polishing concept for removal of ammonium and micropollutants that could potentially be incorporated in existing wastewater treatment plants. We demonstrated a method to use high silica MOR zeolite granules as an adsorbent for simultaneous removal of the micropollutant sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and ammonium (NH4+) ions from aqueous solutions. At an initial NH4+ concentration of 10 mg/L the high silica zeolite mordenite (MOR) granules removed 0.42 mg/g of NH4+, similar to the removal obtained by commonly used natural zeolite Zeolita (0.44 mg/g). However, at higher NH4+ concentrations the Zeolita performed better. In addition, the Langmuir isotherm model showed a higher maximum adsorption capacity of Zeolita (qmax, 4.08 mg/g), which was about two times higher than that of MOR (2.11). The adsorption capacity of MOR towards SMX, at both low (2 µg/L) and high (50 mg/L) initial concentrations, was high and even increased in the presence of NH4+ ions. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the possibilities of using treated wastewater for the production of unreinforced concrete blocks. Compressive strength, water absorption and morphology tests of concrete blocks, produced from different makeups of mixing water, drinking water, drinking water spiked with ammonium and phosphate, and the effluent of the city’s wastewater treatment plant, were evaluated. Results showed that the compressive strength of blocks manufactured using treated wastewater was as high as of the blocks produced using drinking water. Ammonium, phosphate and chlorine were found not to have a negative effect on the strength of the blocks. Water absorption tests confirmed the results of the compressive strength, as lower humidity was found in cases of higher strength. In the process of cement hydration, crystals of calcium silicate and calcium hydroxide were observed by morphology tests. From the variability in the results, it could be concluded that the quality of the mixing water was not the only factor that influenced the strength of the unreinforced concrete blocks. Biofiltration for Mn removal has not been proven in the tropics (18-29 °C). Also, the use of pumice as an alternative filter medium for Mn removal is still poorly known. In this study, a bench-scale biofiltration experiment, using virgin pumice, silica sand, and anthracite, was conducted for 107 days using tropical groundwater at 22 °C. Characterization of manganese oxide (MnOx) on filter media was carried out by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The ability of culturable bacteria to oxidize Mn was verified by the leucoberbelin blue dye assay (LBB). The microbial activity on filter media was studied by ATP analyses. Identification of the MOB was performed by 16S rRNA sequencing. Results showed that the ripening time in each column was similar (∼80 days); therefore, the filter media and water temperature do not seem to accelerate the start-up period. The MnOx present on all ripened media was of the birnessite type. The MnOx morphology, influent water parameters, and microbiological activity suggest a start-up period likely assisted by biological oxidation. Therefore, biofiltration for manganese removal is feasible under tropical conditions. The similarity in the performance of pumice with the other media confirmed its suitability for biotic Mn removal. All materials presented similar known MOB at the genus level; however, different closest related species colonized selectively the filter media. Two strains of Pseudoxanthomonas sp., a not recognized genus on matured biofilters, look promising as inoculums in pumice and sand. Water withdrawals around the world have increased almost twice as fast as the population during the last century. Higher than expected water demand is leading to water scarcity and causing rapid depletion of water tables around the world. One reason behind the higher than expected demand is the inefficient use of water. Inefficient use of water affects the well-being of society, the economic stability of countries, and environmental health. Indeed, water use efficiency (WUE) is one of the pillars of sustainable development goals (SDG 6.4.1). However, progress toward achieving WUE is slow, especially for many developing countries where the degradation of natural resources is critical, economic growth is slow, and there are few strong institutions to coordinate actions. One reason behind inefficient water use is human behavior. A variety of contextual and psychological factors underlie the behavior. The contextual factors include socioeconomic, technical, institutional, and environmental factors and the behavioral factors include factors associated with the perception of risk, attitudes, norms, etc. Yet, few studies consider an integrated view of these factors in shaping water use behavior. This paper consolidates contextual and behavioral factors which influence water use, studies the gaps in our understanding of human water behavior underlying WUE and highlights the need to comprehensive assess and consistently measure such factors and their relationships. Based on the gaps identified, it proposes a conceptual model that connects contextual and behavioral factors and represents potential cause-effect relationships as supported by various environmental behavior approaches and psychological theories. Ion exchange (IEX) resins can remove natural organic matter (NOM) from drinking water sources. However, the IEX system produces a waste brine rich of sodium, chloride, NOM and sulfate. The treatment of the waste brine aims to recover a clean solution rich of sodium chloride, that can be reused to regenerate IEX resin. Previous research showed that ceramic nanofiltration partially removes NOM from the waste brine, but sulfate removal requires additional treatment. Sulfate removal by chemical precipitation was previously studied either on brines with low NOM concentrations or water with low concentrations of NOM and salts. The current work focussed on sulfate removal from NOM-rich brines by chemical dosing of (1) BaCl2, resulting in precipitation of barite (BaSO4), and (2) CaCl2, Ca(OH)2 and NaAlO2, resulting in precipitation of calcium sulfate and, subsequently, ettringite (Ca6Al2(SO4)3(OH)12). Additionally, the effect of NOM on SO42− removal was studied. Modelling and batch experiments were conducted with IEX and synthetic brines within the typical ion strength range of 0.1 to 1 M. With doses of 2.2 g of BaCl2 per g of initial sulfate, BaSO4 precipitation removed more than 83 percent of sulfate, resulting in final concentrations below 0.4 g/L even in the presence of NOM. However, NOM inhibited the precipitation of calcium sulfate and, subsequently, ettringite. With doses of 1.3 g of CaCl2, 0.5–0.7 g of Ca(OH)2 and 0.4–0.6 g of NaAlO2 per g of initial sulfate, calcium sulfate and ettringite precipitation removed between 8 and 95 percent of sulfate from NOM-rich brines, resulting in final concentrations between 0.8 and 2 g/L. Millions of people worldwide are exposed to excessive concentrations of fluoride (F−) from groundwater sources. Ca-Al-CO3 layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have shown promising defluoridation efficiency; however, defluoridation by Ca-Al-CO3 LDHs is highly pH sensitive. This study showed that simultaneous acidification by conventional acids, such as HCl and CO2 substantially increased the performance of Ca-Al-CO3 LDHs for F- removal at environmentally relevant concentrations (e.g., 10 mg/L) to below the WHO guideline value (1.5 mg/L), while, in comparison to other acids (HNO3, H2SO4, H3PO4), the use of HCl and CO2 does not lead to the introduction of potentially harmful or undesired anions. The addition of HCl and CO2 to LDHs suspensions did lead to changes to the LDHs structure. Leaching experiments, supported by PHREEQC modelling and characterization (SEM-EDX, XRD and FTIR), strongly suggest that the main mechanism of F- removal by Ca-Al-CO3 LDHs was F− adsorption or complexation onto/into various rehydrated mixed metal oxides which re-precipitated upon partial LDHs dissolution when acidifying., Sanitary Engineering

Generally, abstracted groundwater is aerated, leading to iron (Fe2+) oxidation to Fe3+ and precipitation as Fe3+-(hydr)oxide (HFO) flocs. This practice of passive groundwater treatment, however, is not considered a barrier for arsenic (As), as removal efficiencies vary widely (15–95%), depending on Fe/As ratio. This study hypothesizes that full utilization of the adsorption capacity of groundwater native-Fe2+ based HFO flocs is hampered by rapid Fe2+ oxidation-precipitation during aeration before or after storage. Therefore, delaying Fe2+ oxidation by the introduction of an anoxic storage step before aeration-filtration was investigated for As(III) oxidation and removal in Rajshahi (Bangladesh) with natural groundwater containing 329(±0.05) µgAs/L. The results indicated that As(III) oxidation in the oxic storage was higher with complete and rapid Fe2+ oxidation (2±0.01 mg/L) than in the anoxic storage system, where Fe2+ oxidation was partial (1.03±0.32 mg/L), but the oxidized As(V)/Fe removal ratio was comparatively higher for the anoxic storage system. The low pH (6.9) and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration (0.24 mg/L) in the anoxic storage limited the rapid oxidation of Fe2+ and facilitated more As(V) removal. The groundwater native-Fe2+ (2.33±0.03 mg/L) removed 61% of As in the oxic system (storage-aeration-filtration), whereas 92% As removal was achieved in the anoxic system., Sanitary Engineering

Arsenic (As) is a toxic element present in many (ground)water sources in the world. Most conventional As removal techniques require pre-oxidation of the neutral arsenite (As(III)) species to the negatively charged arsenate (As(V)) oxyanion to optimize As removal and minimize chemical use. In this work, a novel, continuous-flow As removal system was developed that combines biological As(III) oxidation by bacteria with Fe electrocoagulation (EC), an Fe(0)-based electrochemical technology that generates reactive Fe(III) precipitates to bind As. The bio-integrated FeEC system (bio-FeEC) showed effective oxidation and removal of 150 µg/L As(III), without the need of chemicals. To remove As to below the WHO guideline of 10 µg/L, 10 times lower charge dosage was required for the bio-FeEC system compared to conventional FeEC. This lower Fe dosage requirement reduced sludge production and energy consumption. The As(III) oxidizing biomass was found to consist of bacteria belonging to Comamonadaceae, Rhodobacteraceae and Acidovorax, which are capable of oxidizing As(III) and are common in drinking water biofilms. Characterization of the As-laden Fe solids by X-ray absorption spectroscopy indicated that both bio-FeEC and conventional FeEC produced solids consistent with a mixture of lepidocrocite and 2-line ferrihydrite. Continuous development of industry and civilization has led to changes in composition, texture and toxicity of waste water due to the wide range of pollutants being present. Considering that the conventional wastewater treatment methods are insufficient for removing micropollutants and nutrients to a high level, other, alternative, treatment methods should be used to polish wastewater treatment plant effluents. In this study we developed an alternative, polishing concept for removal of ammonium and micropollutants that could potentially be incorporated in existing wastewater treatment plants. We demonstrated a method to use high silica MOR zeolite granules as an adsorbent for simultaneous removal of the micropollutant sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and ammonium (NH4+) ions from aqueous solutions. At an initial NH4+ concentration of 10 mg/L the high silica zeolite mordenite (MOR) granules removed 0.42 mg/g of NH4+, similar to the removal obtained by commonly used natural zeolite Zeolita (0.44 mg/g). However, at higher NH4+ concentrations the Zeolita performed better. In addition, the Langmuir isotherm model showed a higher maximum adsorption capacity of Zeolita (qmax, 4.08 mg/g), which was about two times higher than that of MOR (2.11). The adsorption capacity of MOR towards SMX, at both low (2 µg/L) and high (50 mg/L) initial concentrations, was high and even increased in the presence of NH4+ ions. The adsorption of organic micropollutants (OMPs) on high-silica zeolites is characterized by adsorption isotherms with various shapes. The occurrence of an S-shaped adsorption isotherm indicates the lack of adsorption affinity for OMPs at low, environmentally relevant equilibrium concentrations. In this study, S-shaped isotherms were observed during batch experiments with 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) and FAU zeolites. This is the first time that an S-shaped isotherm is reported for the adsorption of OMPs on high-silica zeolites. Monte Carlo (MC) simulations in the grand-canonical ensemble were used to obtain a better understanding of the mechanism of the S-shaped adsorption isotherms. From the MC simulation results, it was observed that multiple TCP molecules were adsorbed in the supercages of the FAU zeolites. It was found that the π-π interactions between TCP molecules give rise to the adsorption of multiple TCP molecules per supercage, and thus causing an S-shaped adsorption isotherm. Simulations also revealed that water molecules were preferentially adsorbed in the supercages and sodalite cages of the FAU zeolites. FAU zeolites with a higher Al content adsorbed a higher amount of water molecules and a lower amount of TCP, and showed less pronounced S-shaped isotherms., Sanitary Engineering, Engineering Thermodynamics

The presence of manganese (Mn) in drinking water causes aesthetic, operational, and health problems. Removal of Mn(ii) by the use of Mn oxidizing microorganisms in biofiltration processes has been studied leading to a more economical and environmentally friendly process than conventional treatments with chemical products. There are multiple reports in temperate regions, but little information under tropical conditions, concerning Mn(ii) removal by microorganisms. In this study, 13 autochthonous culturable manganese oxidizing bacteria isolated from water of two wells with ∼0.6 mg L-1 and ∼0.2 mg L-1 Mn(ii), respectively, were evaluated in vitro to determine their potential as inoculums for application in biofiltration processes. The oxidation capacity of Mn(ii) was evaluated by a qualitative test with Leucoberbelin blue I and the Mn(ii) removal was quantified by measurements of the residual Mn(ii) in a culture broth with an initial concentration of 5.9 mg L-1. The biofilm formation capacity of the strains was also determined by crystal violet staining and by quantification of polysaccharides of extracellular polymeric substances. Three strains showed the highest percentage of Mn(ii) removal in the culture in broth, two belonging to the genus Aeromonas (HAC-12 and RUE-1), with removal values of 42.5% and 40.1%, respectively, and one belonging to the genus Stenotrophomonas (S-3), with 40.3% removal. Besides, HAC-3B and RUE-6A showed the highest production of exopolysaccharides. Assessing water quality and identifying the potential source of contamination, by Sanitary inspections (SI), are essential to improve household drinking water quality. However, no study link the water quality at a point of use (POU), household level or point of collection (POC), and associated SI data in a medium resource setting using a Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) model. We collected water samples and applied an adapted SI at 328 POU and 265 related POC from a rural area in East Sumba, Indonesia. Fecal contamination was detected in 24.4 and 17.7% of 1 ml POC and POU samples, respectively. The BBN model showed that the effect of holistic—combined interventions to improve the water quality were larger compared to individual intervention. The water quality at the POU was strongly related to the water quality at the POC and the effect of household water treatment to improve the water quality was more prominent in the context of better sanitation and hygiene conditions. In addition, it was concluded that the inclusion of extra “external” variable (fullness level of water at storage), besides the standard SI variables, could improve the model’s performance in predicting the water quality at POU. Household water treatment (HWT) can tackle the issue of consuming unsafe drinking water at home. While household socio-economic characteristics are often assumed to influence the psychology of HWT use, no study has rigorously tested such an assumption. We aim to fill the gap by a cross-sectional study in a rural area in Sumba Timur, Indonesia (N = 256). Using mediation analysis, we demonstrated that psychosocial factors mediated the relationship between socio-economic characteristics and the use of household water treatment, and socio-economic characteristics strongly influenced the psychology of household water treatment usage. The use of HWT asked from different angles allowed more degrees of freedom to better assess the true status of the HWT usage, via the principal component of the answers. This paper concludes that “causal” relationship pathway from socio-economic characteristics to the use of HWT via psychosocial factors is a realistic assumption when assessing the influence of socio-economic characteristics on HWT., Sanitary Engineering, Water Resources

Silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic membranes are of particular significance for wastewater treatment due to their mechanical strength, chemical stability, and antifouling ability. Currently, the membranes are prepared by SiC-particle sintering at a high temperature. The production suffers from long production time and high costs. In this paper, we demonstrated a more economical way to produce SiC ultrafiltration membranes based on low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD). SiC was deposited in the pores of alumina microfiltration supports using two precursors (SiH2Cl2 and C2H2/H2) at a relatively low temperature of 750 °C. Different deposition times varying from 0 to 150 min were used to tune membrane pore size. The pure water permeance of the membranes only decreased from 350 Lm−2h−1bar−1 to 157 Lm−2h−1bar−1 when the deposition time was increased from 0 to 120 min due to the narrowing of membrane pore size from 71 to 47 nm. Increasing the deposition time from 120 to 150 min mainly resulted in the formation of a thin, dense layer on top of the support instead of in the pores. Oil-in-water emulsion filtration experiments illustrated that both the reversible and irreversible fouling of the SiC-deposited UF membrane was considerably lower as compared to the pristine alumina support. The unique feature that pore sizes decrease linearly as a function of SiC deposition time creates opportunities to produce low-fouling SiC membranes with tuned pore sizes on relatively cheap support., Sanitary Engineering, EKL Processing

Natural organic matter (NOM) fractions cause problems in drinking water treatment and supply. In the North Sea region, anionic ion exchange (IEX) in non-fixed bed configurations has been considered for NOM removal in drinking water treatment plants. This paper discusses several experiences of the impact of anion IEX on NOM removal and on NOM-related problems in water treatment locations of the North Sea region, considering the specific situation of the sites. The investigated parameters include the effect of anionic IEX on the removal of total NOM and specific NOM fractions, the amount of chemicals used for coagulation, the development of trans membrane pressure in microfiltration, the formation of assimilable organic carbon and the energy consumption during advanced oxidation, the removal of organics by activated carbon, and the formation of disinfection by-products. The pilot experiences at three treatment locations in Belgium, United Kingdom and the Netherlands show that anionic IEX (1) removed typically 40 to 60 percent of total NOM; (2) targeted mostly humic NOM fractions, and was not effective to remove biopolymers (3) contributed to lower coagulant doses and energy consumption in UV/advanced oxidation; (4) had limited influence on limiting the fouling of microfiltration membranes; (5) lowered the formation of disinfection by-products; and (6) it can improve biological stability., Sanitary Engineering

In drinking water treatment, natural organic matter (NOM) is effectively removed from surface water using ion exchange (IEX). A main drawback of using IEX for NOM removal is the production of spent IEX regeneration brine, a polluting waste that is expensive to discharge. In this work, we studied ceramic nanofiltration as a treatment for the spent NOM-rich brine, with the aim to reduce the volume of this waste and to recycle salt. Compared to polymeric nanofiltration, the fouling was limited. When NOM is rejected and concentrated, a clean permeate with the regeneration salt (NaCl) could be produced and reused in the IEX regeneration process. Bench scale studies revealed that NOM could be effectively separated from the NaCl solution by steric effects. However, the separation of NaCl from other salts present in the brine, such as Na2SO4, was not sufficient for reuse purposes. The low sulphate rejection was mainly due to the low zeta potential of the membrane at the high ionic strength of the brine. The permeate of the ceramic nanofiltration should be treated further to obtain a sodium chloride quality that can be recycled as a regenerant solution for ion exchange. The primary goal of a drinking water company is to produce safe drinking water fulfilling the quality standards defined by national and international guidelines. To ensure the produced drinking water meets the quality standards, the sampling of the drinking water is carried out on a regular (almost daily) basis. It is a dilemma that the operator wishes to have a high probability of detecting a bias while minimizing their measuring effort. In this paper a seven-step design methodology is described which helps to determine a water quality (WQ) monitoring scheme. Besides using soft sensors as surrogate sensors for parameters currently not available online, they can possibly provide a cost-effective alternative when used to determine multiple parameters required through one single instrument., Sanitary Engineering
