Purpose: Malignant Mesothelioma (MM) is a rare malignancy of the serosa membranes with a high mortality rate and long latent period. The relationship between a group of mineral fibers known as asbestos and mesothelioma is now well accepted in which people can be exposed to these fibers by various means during their lifetime and has been its usage has banned in many countries, such as Iran, which announced its gradual elimination from 1999 over a period of 7 years by using safe substitutes. However, the mineral particles are able to sustain itself in the environment, air, water, and soil and on the other hand, symptoms may take up to half a century to develop in exposed individuals. Also, there remains a shortage of comprehensive investigation on the effects of asbestos exposure within the familial context (household or domestic exposure) or on individuals residing in proximity to asbestos mines or factories (environmental exposure). Based on the high number of MM cases in Iran, and also our hypothesis that residuals of asbestos in the environment and petroleum products may be the etiological factor for MM, we conducted this study to evaluate the clinic epidemiological features of MM in the south of Iran its relation to possible asbestos exposure. Methods: In this study, we analyzed the demographic features and occupations of confirmed cases of MM in Shiraz, southern Iran along with the follow‐up of the patients' disease from 2008 to 2018, while also comparing the features of our patients with a control group compromising of 105 non‐MM patients. Results: Among the 35 confirmed cases of MM, with an average age of 61 years, 9 (25.7%) were female, and 26 (74.3%) were male. During our assessment, 12 patients had already died, with a mean time of 11.26 months post‐diagnosis. Our findings revealed a higher prevalence of MM among housekeepers and employees of oil companies. In comparison to the control group, individuals with occupational exposure and those residing near refinery locations were at a heightened risk of developing MM. However, based on regression analysis, only occupations associated with refineries exhibited a significant correlation with MM (p = 0.028; OR: 14.602; 95% CI: 1.328–160.499). Conclusion: Both occupational and para‐occupational exposure demonstrated a significant correlation with MM, whereas our regression analysis did not affirm geographical and environmental factors as contributors to MM. Despite the industry's prohibition of direct asbestos usage, the persistent existence of asbestos particles in the environment for decades, coupled with the long latency period of MM, warrants further investigation. The primary aim of this study was to determine the influence of CuO-decorated graphene oxide nanoplatelets (CuO@GONPs) loading (0.05, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 wt.%) on the flexural and wear properties of epoxy-matrix nanocomposites. It is worth noting that the Copper (II) chloride (CuCl2) was used as a nano-CuO generator on the surface of the GONPs in the presence of NaOH. Various analyses such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Atomic-force microscopy (AFM), Raman spectra, and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) confirmed the successful synthesizing of the CuO@GONPs hybrid. The results of the flexural tests revealed that the highest obtained flexural strength and flexural modulus belonged to the specimens containing 0.3 wt.% and 0.5 wt.% CuO@GONPs, with 51.8% and 21.3% enhancements respectively, as compared to the neat epoxy. The wear test results showed that adding 0.5 wt.% CuO@GONPs into the epoxy matrix was caused to decrease the wear rate and friction coefficient by 87.4% and 29.6%, respectively. Additionally, the CuO@GONPs/epoxy nanocomposite denoted better flexural and wear behaviors than the pristine GONPs/epoxy one. Overall, the controlled introduction of the CuO@GONPs hybrid into the epoxy matrix was found to be an effective strategy for enhancing its flexural and wear properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For the first time, a bimetallic metal–organic framework of (MOF) La3+ and Ce3+ (Ce, La-MOF) was synthesized using a new solvothermal route. Also, monometallic MOFs La3+ (La-MOF) and Ce3+ (Ce-MOF) were synthesized using the mentioned method. To identify, and analyze the synthesized nanostructures, field emission scanning microscopy (FSEM), energy dispersive X-ray mapping (MAP), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal gravity curve (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis, Fourier transforms infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and Brunauer–Emmt–Teller surface area (BET) were used. According to the XRD diffraction patterns of Ce–La-MOF nanostructure, no additional peaks are derived from La species, which confirms that the addition of La does not change the crystalline phase structure of Ce-MOF. The size of La-MOF, Ce-MOF, and Ce, La-MOF nanostructures was calculated by the Williamson-Hall method and reported as 72.97, 55.46, and 81.55 nm, respectively. The specific surface area (BET) results for La-MOF, Ce-MOF, and Ce, La-MOF nanostructures were reported as 140, 200, and 260 m2 g−1 respectively, and the mean pore volumes of the nanostructures were reported as 0.019, 0.022 and 0.030 cm3 respectively. These values allow the use of these versatile nanostructures in various applications such as biosensing, separation and purification, medicine field, and catalysts. In addition, in this study, modified electrodes for synthesized nanostructures were tested for the electrooxidation of acetaminophen. And the obtained results show better electrocatalytic behavior of bimetallic Ce, La-MOF nanostructures than monometallic La-MOF, Ce-MOF nanostructures against acetaminophen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most prevalent subtype of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, characterized by remarkable molecular heterogeneity. This study evaluates the prevalence of MYC, BCL2, and BCL6 gene rearrangements among Iranian DLBCL patients. Method: This historical cohort study encompassed 152 patients drawn from six reference hospitals who participated in the research. Interphase dual-color break-apart fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was applied to formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded DLBCL specimens categorized as "not otherwise specified" alongside 20 normal controls. Survival data was analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method and the Log-Rank test. Results: Among the patients, 7 (4.8%), 4 (2.9%), and 15 (10.2%) exhibited MYC, BCL2, and BCL6 rearrangements, respectively. Additionally, 1.5% of the patients demonstrated double-hit (DH) characteristics with both MYC and BCL2 rearrangements, while no triple rearrangements were observed. The presence of rearrangements appeared to be independent of clinicopathological variables. Patients with rearrangements experienced reduced survival durations, with reductions of 26.6, 31.2, 9.1, and 34.2 months for MYC, BCL2, BCL6-rearranged, and DH tumors, respectively (P > 0.05). Adverse prognosis was associated with age, activated B-cell-like phenotype, disease stage, B symptoms, lactate dehydrogenase levels, and risk grouping according to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) International Prognostic Index. Conclusion: DLBCL cases featuring MYC, BCL2, and/or BCL6 translocations are relatively rare. Patients harboring these rearrangements tend to exhibit aggressive disease progression with shortened overall survival. However, these differences did not reach statistical significance, necessitating further research to validate the incorporation of such tests into the routine workup of DLBCL patients.
