4. On dynamical ordering in a 2D electron crystal confined in a narrow channel geometry

Abstract

We present both time-averaged and time-resolved transport measurements of a two-dimensional electron (Wigner) crystal on the surface of superfluid helium confined in a narrow microchannel. We find that the field-current characteristics of the driven crystal obtained by the time-averaged measurements exhibit oscillations and negative differential conductivity. This unusual transport behavior was observed previously by Glasson et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 176802 (2001)] and was attributed to a nonequilibrium transition of the electron system to a novel dynamically ordered phase of current filaments aligned along the channels. Contrarily to this explanation, our time-resolved transport measurements reveal that oscillating field-current characteristics appear due to dynamical decoupling (slipping) and recoupling (sticking) of the uniform electron crystal to the liquid helium substrate. Our result demonstrates that this unusual non-linear transport effect is intrinsic, does not depend on the device geometry, and is associated with the dynamical interaction of Wigner crystal with the surface excitations of the liquid substrate., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We investigate low-frequency fluctuations in the transport characteristics of a quasi-1D Wigner solid (WS) moving along a liquid helium substrate in response to a sinusoidal driving voltage. The fluctuations occur between distinct transport modes in which the decoupling of the WS from ripplonic polarons (or 'dimple lattice', DL) formed on the helium surface does, or does not, occur during each ac cycle. We demonstrate that a Gaussian-like distribution in the decoupling threshold force gives rise to this bistability, as the low-frequency switching occurs when the probability of decoupling during each ac cycle is small but finite. We attribute the distribution in the decoupling threshold force to the range of structural configurations allowed for the quasi-1D electron lattice, which influences the strength of the WS-DL coupling. Hence, the switching rate between the ac transport modes is extremely sensitive to the microscopic properties of the electron solid.

Abstract

Background: Acute hepatic porphyria is a group of multisystem disorders of which acute intermittent porphyria is the most common subtype. Givosiran, a subcutaneously administered RNA interference therapeutic targeting liver ALAS mRNA, is approved for treating these disorders. This Phase 1/2 open-label extension study (NCT02949830) evaluated the long-term safety and efficacy of givosiran in adults with acute intermittent porphyria, with follow-up of up to 48 months, which is the longest follow-up of givosiran treatment to date. Participants were adults aged 18–65 years who completed part C of the Phase 1 givosiran study (NCT2452372). Methods: Enrollees received givosiran for up to 48 months. Primary and secondary endpoints included the incidence of adverse events, changes in urinary delta-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and porphobilinogen (PBG) levels, annualized rate of porphyria attacks, and annualized hemin use. Quality of life was assessed using the EQ-5D-5L instrument as an exploratory endpoint. Results: Sixteen patients (median age: 39.5 years) participated. Common adverse events included abdominal pain, nasopharyngitis, and nausea (50% each), with injection-site erythema (38%) and injection-site pruritus (25%) noted as frequent treatment-related reactions. Givosiran therapy reduced annualized rates of porphyria attacks and hemin use by 97% and 96%, respectively. From months > 33 to 48, all patients were free from attacks requiring significant medical intervention and did not use hemin. There were substantial reductions in median urinary ALA and PBG of 95% and 98%, respectively. Additionally, a clinically meaningful improvement in quality of life was observed. Conclusions: In the longest follow-up of givosiran-treated patients reported to date, the therapy maintained an acceptable safety profile and demonstrated sustained improvements in clinical outcomes over 4 years in patients with acute intermittent porphyria. Abstract

We investigate the influence of confinement on the positional order of a quasi-1D electron system trapped on the surface of liquid helium. We find evidence that the melting of the Wigner solid (WS) depends on the confinement strength, as well as electron density and temperature. A reentrant solid-liquid-solid transition is observed for increasing electron density under constant electrostatic confinement. As the electron row number $N_y$ changes, varying commensurability results in a modulation of the WS order, even when $N_y$ is large (several tens). This is confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract

We present time-resolved transport measurements of a Wigner solid (WS) on the surface of liquid Helium confined in a micron-scale channel. At rest, the WS is `dressed' by a cloud of quantised capillary waves (ripplons). Under a driving force, we find that repeated WS-ripplon decoupling leads to stick-slip current oscillations, the frequency of which can be tuned by adjusting the temperature, pressing electric field, or electron density. Abstract

Asciminib is a potent and selective inhibitor of BCR::ABL1, with potential to avoid toxicity resulting from off-target kinase inhibition. Forty-nine patients treated with asciminib under a managed access program in the UK were evaluated for toxicity and response. Intolerance, rather than resistance (65% vs. 35%), was the most common reason for cessation of the last-line of treatment but asciminib was well tolerated, with most patients (29, 59%) remaining on treatment at a median of 14 months follow-up, and only 6 (12%) stopping for intolerance. Of 44 patients assessable for response, 29 (66%) achieved a complete cytogenetic response (CCyR) or better, with poorer responses seen in those stopping their last-line of therapy for resistance. Fewer patients with a prior history of a non-T315I-BCR::ABL1single nucleotide variant (BSNV), or a non-T315I-BSNV detectable at baseline achieved CCyR. Serial tracking of BSNV by next generation sequencing demonstrated clonal expansion of BSNV-harbouring populations, which in some settings was associated with resistance (E459K, F317L, F359I), while in others was seen in the context of ongoing response, often with intensified dosing (T315I, I502F). These data suggest that asciminib exerts selective pressure on some BSNV-harbouring populations in vivo, some of which may respond to intensified dosing.

Abstract

The hydrogenic two‐point model (H‐2PM), an analytical model for the scrape‐off layer that predicts a common electron and ion temperature and density along a flux tube from a target temperature and density, is adapted to a single‐species helium (He) model, preserving the 2PM assumptions and analytical nature. Across a range of densities and heating powers, the predicted Te$$ {T}_e $$ is within 20eV$$ 20\kern0.3em \mathrm{eV} $$ of upstream measurements by high‐resolution Thomson scattering (HRTS) for low‐confinement He plasmas performed in JET ITER‐like wall (JET‐ILW). For high‐recycling conditions, He‐2PM predictions of ne$$ {n}_e $$ were within 10% of the Li‐beam diagnostic measurements, excluding the near‐SOL, when assuming Zeff=1$$ {Z}_{\mathrm{eff}}=1 $$, suggesting the divertor SOL was not fully ionised in the JET‐ILW He plasmas. Predictions of the scrape‐off layer (SOL) plasma conditions from the 2D multi‐fluid code EDGE2D‐EIRENE are compared to the OEDGE 1D fluid code for JET low‐confinement mode (L‐mode) plasmas. In the low‐recycling divertor conditions (divertor target plasma collisionality νe≈30$$ {\nu}_e\approx 30 $$), OEDGE and EDGE2D‐EIRENE agree on the electron temperature, the ion temperature, and the electron density within 10% in the low‐field side (LFS) divertor X‐point region (divertor SOL) and within 25% in the LFS midplane region. In high‐recycling conditions (νe≈55,000$$ {\nu}_e\approx 55,000 $$), the predictions of both codes agree on the electron temperature within 20%, while differences in the ion temperature and electron density increase to as high as 50% in the divertor SOL. Abstract

The Ka Ora, Ka Ako school lunch programme introduced in 2020 provides nutritious lunches to around 220,000 students in low-advantage schools. While the food security impacts of this programme have been well documented, its potential to enhance outcomes in other areas of public policy is underappreciated. We conducted a policy analysis to map the programme's intersection with current public policy agendas in education, sustainability and health in Aotearoa New Zealand. We conclude that Ka Ora, Ka Ako can be a powerful platform to effect broad societal outcomes through alignment with school curricula, concerted effort to reduce carbon emissions, and commitment to delivering highly nutritious foods to all students in qualifying schools. Abstract

Steel fibre-reinforced concrete (SFRC) consists of short, hooked steel fibres that are randomly distributed and oriented within the cementitious matrix. This paper presents a new analytical load-bounding approach that captures the tensile response of misaligned fibres embedded in the matrix. The contribution of fibres in bridging cracks to provide the required stress transfer relies on the orientation of the fibres in the concrete. Bridging fibres aligned with a crack are less effective than those inclined to it. Therefore, understanding the pull-out behaviour of misaligned fibres is a key factor in quantifying and optimising the design of SFRC in structural applications. In the laboratory, a single-oriented fibre embedded in a solid cylinder of concrete was subjected to a pull-out test, where the axis of the tensile force is aligned with the axis of the cylinder. Based on the observed behaviour, this paper presents a new analytical bounding approach to capture the pull-out response of misaligned hooked-end steel fibres embedded in a concrete matrix. The analysis was based on a transversely isotropic failure criterion assumed for the plasticity that occurs in the cold-drawn fibre. Lower and upper bounds to the loading failure were derived from fibre pull-out and fibre fracture, respectively. The division between bounds depended upon the fibre orientation, fibre diameter and the combined strengths of the steel and concrete. Bounding predictions were drawn from ratios between a fibre's shear strength and its transverse and axial uniaxial strengths, as found from a novel testing proposal. The two bounds were compared with new data and other experimental results published in the literature. The results showed that the region between the bounds captured the failure loads of embedded fibres with effective load-bearing orientations. A critical orientation was observed at maximum strength. The present interpretation of the plasticity occurring within off-axis, hooked-end steel fibres suggests that it is possible to optimise the strength of concrete using this method of reinforcement. Abstract

Approved medical face masks have been shown to prevent the spread of respiratory droplets associated with coronavirus transmission in specific settings. The primary goal of this study was to develop a new strategy to assess the filtering and transmissibility properties of medical- and non-medical-grade face masks. In this study, we designed and assessed the filtering efficiency of particles through six different masks with a diverse set of fabrics, textures (woven and non-woven), fiber diameters, and porosity. The filtering and transmissibility properties of face mask layers individually and in combination have been assessed using mathematical analyses and new experimental data. The latter provided velocity profiles and filtration efficiencies for which the data were shown to be predictable. The filtration efficacy and pressure drop across each fabric have been tested using an aerosol particle spray and scanning electron microscopy. To assess clinical significance, the temperature and humidity of the masks were tested on a group of healthy volunteers spanning various age ranges (9–79 years old), utilizing an embedded temperature sensor disc. Also, a mask filter model was developed using fluid dynamic simulations (Solidworks Flow) to evaluate the aerodynamic dispersion of respiratory droplets. Overall, the FFP2 and FFP3 masks demonstrated the highest filtration efficiencies, each exceeding 90%, a feature of multi-layered masks that is consistent with simulations demonstrating higher filtering efficiencies for small particles (<5 µm). The velocity and temperature simulations of all six masks revealed a low air velocity (~1 m/s) inside the mask and a temperature variation of approximately 3 °C during the breathing cycle.
