1. Geometry Effects of the Reactor on Neutrino Flux in Neutrino Experiments of Ultra-short Baseline Reactors.

Abstract

In short baseline reactor antineutrino experiment, the distance between the detector and the reactor is relatively short, the impact of reactor geometry effects on the neutrino spectrum and flux may not be neglected. In this paper, a volume neutrino source model and a point neutrino source model is established based on the structure of the EPR reactor core. The impact of the geometric effect to the antineutrino spectrum and flux in short baseline neutrino experiments is studied, the impact of the uncertainty of the power distribution in the core to the expected neutrino flux in the point model is also discussed. Because of the geometry effect of the core, the point source model can lead to a reduction in the expected neutrino event rate by approximately 0.08% to 0.40%, and the impact of the geometry effects on the shape of neutrino spectrum is on the order of 10-6. In a short baseline reactor antineutrino experiment, a point neutrino source model based on the geometric center of the reactor core can be used to calculate the neutrino flux, the uncertainty introduced by statistical and systematic uncertainties can be neglected in this model. Abstract

The existence of a new interaction involving the electron neutrino and the nucleons, which has received a convincing confirmation through a good agreement between the theoretical and experimental results concerning all observable processes with solar neutrinos, should also inevitably manifest itself in the deuteron disintegration by the neutral currents of reactor antineutrinos. The special attention is drawn to the problem of finding the neutron registration efficiency, discussed in the preparation of the experiment at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory and in a number of special studies. Abstract

The properties of neutrinos are not well known because they weakly interact with surrounding matter. Recently, several interesting results and phenomena have been measured using reactor neutrinos. Although there are various types of detectors that detect neutrino signals, they generally use photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) to collect data. In particular, signals obtained from each PMT surrounding a detector are used to reconstruct a vertex of an incident neutrino in the detector. However, if a number of PMTs are out of operation from the initial installation, the performance of the PMT or its operation efficiency may be changed over time. This may affect the information for the reconstructed vertex of an incident neutrino, which can have a direct impact on results that utilize the reconstructed vertex information. This article briefly describes the change of reconstructed vertex according to operating status of PMTs around the reactor neutrino detector by using a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation based on a cylindrical detector equipped with liquid scintillator. The MC simulation for this analysis needs a moderate number of central processing units (CPUs) and cores. Therefore, various resources and servers at a supercomputing center were used. Abstract

Liquid xenon is one of the leading targets to search for dark matter via its elastic scattering on nuclei or electrons. Due to their low-threshold and low-background capabilities, liquid xenon detectors can also detect coherent elastic neutrino–nucleus scattering (CEνNS) or neutrino–electron scattering. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of a compact and movable liquid xenon detector with an active target mass of O(10∼100) kg and single-electron sensitivity to detect CEνNS from anti-neutrinos from a nuclear reactor. Assuming a single- and few-electron background rate at the level achieved by the XENON10/100 experiments, we expect a 5-σ detection of CEνNS with less than 400 kg-days of exposure. We further investigate the sensitivity of such a detector to neutrino magnetic moment with neutrino electron scattering. If an electronic recoil background rate of 0.01∼0.1 events/keV/kg/day above 1 keV can be achieved with adequate shielding, a liquid xenon detector can reach a neutrino magnetic moment sensitivity of 10−11μB, which would improve upon the current most-constraining laboratory limits from the GEMMA and Borexino experiments. Additionally, such a detector would be able to probe the region compatible with a magnetic moment interpretation of the low-energy excess electronic recoil events recently reported by XENON1T.

Abstract

Reactor neutrinos have been an important tool for both discovery and precision measurement in the history of neutrino studies. Since the first generation of reactor neutrino experiments in the 1950s, the detector technology has advanced greatly. New ideas, new knowledge, and modern software have also enhanced the power of the experiments. The current reactor neutrino experiments, Daya Bay, Double Chooz, and RENO, have led neutrino physics into the precision era. In this article, we review these developments and advances, address the key issues in designing a state-of-the-art reactor neutrino experiment, and explain how the challenging requirements of determining the neutrino mass hierarchy with the next-generation experiment JUNO could be realized in the near future. Abstract

The Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment was designed to measure ?13 with an unpresesent sensitivity of sin22?13 down to 0.01 at 90% C.L. This is achieved with careful site selection and proper detector design. Placement of detector systems close to each of the two reactor clusters not only reduces ?e flux systematic uncertainties, but also cancels the common detection uncertainty when functional identical detectors are used in the near and far sites. With 621 days of data, the relative measurement of the ?e rate and spectrum between near and far detectors gives sin²θ13 = 0.084±0.005 and |Δm²ee| = 2.44+0.100.11 × 10-3eV² . The νe data sample tagged by neutron capture on hydrogen provides an independent measurement of sin²θ13 by the rate dificit of the far site. With 2 near sites and a far site, Daya Bay experiment collects νe interactions with multiple baselines, which allows a search for light sterile neutrinos based on the relative spectral difference between three experimental sites. The non-zero neutrino mixing angle θ13 has been discovered and precisely measured by the current generation short-baseline reactor neutrino experiments. It opens the gate of measuring the leptonic CP-violating phase and enables the neutrino mass ordering. The JUNO and RENO-50 proposals aim at resolving the neutrino mass ordering using reactors. Abstract

The Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment has observed the disappearance of electron antineutrinos from nuclear reactors at ~kilometer baselines. The relative measurement of the ...e rate and spectrum between near and far detectors allows for a precision measurement of the oscillation parameters sin²2θ13 and |Δm²ee|. Two new antineutrino detectors (ADs) were installed in summer 2012, bringing the experiment to the final 8-AD configuration. With 621 days of data, Daya Bay has measured sin² 2θ13 = 0.084±0.005 and |Δm²ee| = 2.44+0.10-0.11 × 10-3 eV². This is the most precise measurement of sin² 2θ13 to date and the most precise measurement of |Δm²ee| in this channel. Several other analyses are also performed, including an independent measurement of sin² 2θ13 using ...e samples tagged by neutron capture on hydrogen, a search for light sterile neutrinos, and a measurement of the absolute reactor antineutrino flux. We present an evaluation of the background induced by 241 Am– 13 C neutron calibration sources in the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment. As a significant background for electron-antineutrino detection at 0.26 ± 0.12 per detector per day on average, it has been estimated by a Monte Carlo simulation that was benchmarked by a special calibration data set. Abstract

Reactor experiments are well suited to probe the possible loss of coherence of neutrino oscillations due to wave-packets separation. We combine data from the short-baseline experiments Daya Bay and the Reactor Experiment for Neutrino Oscillation (RENO) and from the long baseline reactor experiment KamLAND to obtain the best current limit on the reactor antineutrino wave-packet width, $\sigma > 2.1 \times 10^{-4}$ nm at 90% CL. We also find that the determination of standard oscillation parameters is robust, i.e., it is mostly insensitive to the presence of hypothetical decoherence effects once one combines the results of the different reactor neutrino experiments., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. Its purpose is to validate the radiopurity of the scintillator to assure that all components of the JUNO scintillator system work to specifications and only neutrino-grade scintillator is filled into the JUNO Central Detector. The aspired sensitivity level of $10^{���16}$ g/g of $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th requires a large (���20 m$^3$) detection volume and ultralow background levels. Abstract

Liquid xenon is one of the leading targets to search for dark matter via its elastic scattering on nuclei or electrons. Due to their low-threshold and low-background capabilities, liquid xenon detectors can also detect coherent elastic neutrino–nucleus scattering (CEνNS) or neutrino–electron scattering. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of a compact and movable liquid xenon detector with an active target mass of O(10∼100) kg and single-electron sensitivity to detect CEνNS from anti-neutrinos from a nuclear reactor. Assuming a single- and few-electron background rate at the level achieved by the XENON10/100 experiments, we expect a 5-σ detection of CEνNS with less than 400 kg-days of exposure. We further investigate the sensitivity of such a detector to neutrino magnetic moment with neutrino electron scattering. If an electronic recoil background rate of 0.01∼0.1 events/keV/kg/day above 1 keV can be achieved with adequate shielding, a liquid xenon detector can reach a neutrino magnetic moment sensitivity of 10−11μB, which would improve upon the current most-constraining laboratory limits from the GEMMA and Borexino experiments. Additionally, such a detector would be able to probe the region compatible with a magnetic moment interpretation of the low-energy excess electronic recoil events recently reported by XENON1T.

Abstract

A nuclear reactor is a powerful tool to study neutrinos and light dark sector particles. Some of the reactor experiments have proven to be extremely useful already. Considering the great interest in the power of intensity frontier to search for new light particles, it would be desirable to explore more possibilities to exploit the existing reactor power sources for particle physics research. We suggest a new reactor experiment searching for the dark sector. The dark photon can be produced in a reactor core and decay into a photon and an axion in the presence of the dark axion portal through an axion-photon-dark photon vertex. Abstract

The observation of the Reactor Antineutrino Anomaly, at the beginning of this decade, has revived the interest in short-baseline experiments that probe the disappearance of electron antineutrinos. In addition, the recent evidence for a distortion in the reactor antineutrino energy spectrum, seen by some of those short-baseline experiments, has questioned our current models even more. The SoLid experiment is a reactor neutrino experiment, located at the BR2 reactor site of the SCK-CEN in Belgium, that aims to resolve the anomaly and perform a precise spectral measure- ment using a novel segemented detector design. The first phase of SoLid has reached one year of data taking and the experiment will soon be able to present some initial results. These proceedings summarise the current status of the experiment.

Abstract

Reactor neutrino experiments have seen major improvements in precision in recent years. With the experimental uncertainties becoming lower than those from theory, carefully considering all sources of ν ¯ e is important when making theoretical predictions. One source of ν ¯ e that is often neglected arises from the irradiation of the nonfuel materials in reactors. The ν ¯ e rates and energies from these sources vary widely based on the reactor type, configuration, and sampling stage during the reactor cycle and have to be carefully considered for each experiment independently. In this article, we present a formalism for selecting the possible ν ¯ e sources arising from the neutron captures on reactor and target materials. We apply this formalism to the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the ν ¯ e source for the the Precision Reactor Oscillation and Spectrum Measurement (PROSPECT) experiment. Overall, we observe that the nonfuel ν ¯ e contributions from HFIR to PROSPECT amount to 1% above the inverse beta decay threshold with a maximum contribution of 9% in the 1.8-2.0 MeV range. Nonfuel contributions can be particularly high for research reactors like HFIR because of the choice of structural and reflector material in addition to the intentional irradiation of target material for isotope production. We show that typical commercial pressurized water reactors fueled with low-enriched uranium will have significantly smaller nonfuel ν ¯ e contribution.

Abstract

The standard 3-flavor neutrino oscillation has been well established. However, some experimental hints suggest the existence of new types of neutrinos at mass of eV scale. Those sterile neutrinos will change the neutrino oscillation pattern for short-baseline neutrino experiments with the 3(active)+N(sterile) neutrino mixing framework. Recent proposed medium baseline reactor neutrino experiments are sensitive to those very light sterile neutrinos at 10−4 to 0.01 eV2 mass-squared difference through electron antineutrino disappearance channel. In this paper, we will discuss the matter effect correction on those very light sterile neutrino oscillation. As shown in our study, the matter effect correction for sterile neutrino oscillation is quite small (< 4%), and at the same scale as the 3-flavor active neutrino oscillation case.

Abstract

We study visible neutrino decay at the reactor neutrino experiments KamLAND and, JUNO. Assuming the Majoron model of neutrino decay, we obtain constraints on the couplings between Majoron and neutrino as well as on the lifetime/mass of the most massive neutrino state i.e., $\tau_{3} / m_{3}$ or $\tau_{2} / m_{2}$, respectively, for the normal or the inverted mass orderings. We obtain the constraints on the lifetime $\tau_{2} / m_{2} \geq 1.4 \times 10^{-9}~\rm{s/eV}$ in the inverted mass ordering for both KamLAND and JUNO at 90% CL. In the normal ordering in which the bound can be obtained for JUNO only, the constraint is milder than the inverted ordering case, $\tau_{3} / m_{3} \geq 1.0 \times 10^{-10}~\rm{s/eV}$ at 90% CL. We find that the dependence of lightest neutrino mass ($=m_{\rm{lightest}}$), $m_1 (m_3)$ for the normal (inverted) mass ordering, on the constraints for the different types of couplings (scalar or pseudo-scalar) is rather strong, but the $m_{\rm{lightest}}$ dependence on the lifetime/mass bound is only modest., Comment: Matches the published version. Abstract

Physical review / D 101(3), 032006 (1-19) (2020). doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.101.032006, The ordering of the neutrino mass eigenstates is one of the fundamental open questions in neutrino physics. While current-generation neutrino oscillation experiments are able to produce moderate indications on this ordering, upcoming experiments of the next generation aim to provide conclusive evidence. In this paper we study the combined performance of the two future multi-purpose neutrino oscillation experiments JUNO and the IceCube Upgrade, which employ two very distinct and complementary routes towards the neutrino mass ordering. The approach pursued by the $20\,\mathrm{kt}$ medium-baseline reactor neutrino experiment JUNO consists of a careful investigation of the energy spectrum of oscillated $\bar{\nu}_e$ produced by ten nuclear reactor cores. The IceCube Upgrade, on the other hand, which consists of seven additional densely instrumented strings deployed in the center of IceCube DeepCore, will observe large numbers of atmospheric neutrinos that have undergone oscillations affected by Earth matter. In a joint fit with both approaches, tension occurs between their preferred mass-squared differences $ \Delta m_{31}^{2}=m_{3}^{2}-m_{1}^{2} $ within the wrong mass ordering. In the case of JUNO and the IceCube Upgrade, this allows to exclude the wrong ordering at $>5\sigma$ on a timescale of 3--7 years --- even under circumstances that are unfavorable to the experiments' individual sensitivities. Abstract

We present a neutrino oscillation analysis of two particular data sets from the Daya Bay and RENO reactor neutrino experiments aiming to study the increase in precision in the oscillation parameters $\sin^2{2\theta}_{13}$ and the effective mass splitting $\Delta m^2_{ee}$ gained by combining two relatively simple to reproduce analyses available in the literature. For Daya Bay the data from 217 days between December 2011 and July 2012 were used. For RENO we used the data from 500 live days between August 2011 and January 2012. We reproduce reasonably well the results of the individual analyses, both, rate-only and spectral, defining a suitable $\chi^2$ statistic for each case. Finally, we performed a combined spectral analysis and extract tighter constraints on the parameters, with an improved precision between 30-40\% with respect of the individual analyses considered., Comment: 12 pages, 10 color figures. Abstract

Over the last 20 years measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters have become very precise. In the standard neutrino oscillation picture most of the parameters are measured at the percent level. In this thesis we study neutrino oscillations in the standard picture and beyond. We analyze data from all types of neutrino oscillation experiments to obtain a global picture of neutrino oscillations. The remaining unknowns in the standard picture are the value of the CP-violating phase $\delta$, the octant of the atmospheric angle $\theta_{23}$ and the neutrino mass ordering. We discuss the current status of these unknowns and also comment on how well future experiments will do in measuring these quantities, where we discuss new facilities which will observe accelerator, atmossperic and reactor neutrinos. Using oscillation data it is possible to bound a possible violation of the CPT symmetry in the neutrino sector. This is done by performing a fit to neutrino and antineutrino oscillation data separately. We also address the capability of the future experiment DUNE to this scenario. We show that DUNE could improve some of the current bounds considerably. We discuss the sensitivity of DUNE together with the next generation reactor neutrino experiment JUNO to measure quasi-Dirac neutrino oscillations. We find that the future experiments will be able to bound the important quantities, mostly unbounded by current data. Finally, we discuss atmospheric neutrinos at the next generation neutrino telescope ORCA. We show that ORCA will put the best bounds on the invisible neutrino decay of $\nu_3$, coming from neutrino oscillation experiments. We also find that, a scenario like this would not affect the standard measurements of ORCA, namely the determination of the atmospheric neutrino oscillation parameters and the measurement of the neutrino mass ordering.

Abstract

We construct a non-renormalizable gauge model based on symmetry that successfully explains the cobimaximal lepton mixing scheme. Small active neutrino masses and both neutrino mass hierarchies are produced via the type-I seesaw mechanism at the tree-level. The model is predictive; hence, it reproduces the cobimaximal lepton mixing scheme, and the reactor neutrino mixing angle and the solar neutrino mixing angle can obtain best-fit values from recent experimental data. Our model also predicts the effective neutrino mass parameters of and for normal ordering (NO) and and for inverted ordering (IO), which are highly consistent with recent experimental constraints.

Abstract

The Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment has been designed to precisely measure the least known neutrino mixing angle θ 13 . In March 2012, Daya Bay collaboration announced [Daya Bay Collaboration (F. P. An et al.), Observation of electron-antineutrino disappearance at Daya Bay, Phys. Rev. Lett. 108 (2012) 171803] the observation of non-zero value of sin 2 ⁡ 2 θ 13 . Because of large statistics of detected antineutrinos and excellent performance of the experiment, Daya Bay continuously improves the precision of world best measurement of sin 2 ⁡ 2 θ 13 . In addition it provides results on neutrino mass splitting Δ m e e 2 competitive with measurements of other experiments, results on precise measurement of reactor fluxes and on limits of the existence of hypothetical fourth neutrino. In this paper, we report the results available by the time of the 6th Capri workshop: the measurement of oscillation parameters sin 2 ⁡ ( 2 θ 13 ) = 0.084 ± 0.005 and | Δ m e e 2 | = ( 2.42 ± 0.11 ) × 10 − 3 eV 2 [Daya Bay Collaboration (F. P. An et al.), New Measurement of Antineutrino Oscillation with the Full Detector Configuration at Daya Bay, Phys. Rev. There is a well-known $2\ensuremath{\sigma}$ tension in the measurements of the solar $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}{m}^{2}$ between KamLAND and SNO/Super-KamioKANDE. Precise determination of the solar $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}{m}^{2}$ is especially important in connection with current and future long baseline $CP$ violation measurements. Seo and Parke [Phys. Rev. D 99, 033012 (2019)] points out that currently running short baseline reactor neutrino experiments, Daya Bay and RENO, can also constrain solar $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}{m}^{2}$ value as demonstrated by a GLoBES simulation with a limited systematic uncertainty consideration. In this work, the publicly available data, from Daya Bay (1958 days) and RENO (2200 days) are used to constrain the solar $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}{m}^{2}$. Verification of our method through $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}{m}_{ee}^{2}$ and ${\mathrm{sin}}^{2}{\ensuremath{\theta}}_{13}$ measurements is discussed in Appendix A. Using this verified method, reasonable constraints on the solar $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}{m}^{2}$ are obtained using above Daya Bay and RENO data, both individually and combined. We find that the combined data of Daya Bay and RENO set an upper limit on the solar $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}{m}^{2}$ of $18\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{eV}}^{2}$ at the 95% C.L., including both systematic and statistical uncertainties. This constraint is slightly more than twice the KamLAND value. As this combined result is still statistics limited, even though driven by Daya Bay data, the constraint will improve with the additional running of this experiment.

Abstract

The isotopes of $^{9}$Li and $^{8}$He produced by cosmic-rays are one of main source for backgrounds in reactor neutrino experiments. The isotope decays to a neutron and an electron and mimics an inverse beta decay of an electron antineutrino from reactors. The $^{9}$Li/$^{8}$He background spectrum and rate are measured using the data taken by the RENO, and compared with Monte-Carlo prediction. In this presentation, we report the measured cosmogenic background spectrum and rate at RENO.

Abstract

The T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment has been running since January 2010, and has roughly doubled the data set in both neutrino and anti-neutrino beam mode since the most recent published results. We present a joint analysis of neutrino and anti-neutrino data, using both disappearance and appearance channels. This analysis uses a new event reconstruction algorithm, an enlarged fiducial volume, and a new sample of electron-like events with tagged pion decays. The cross-section models used to analyse the data have also been updated to better treat multi-nucleon effects. We present newly-updated measurements of $\theta_{23}$ , $\Delta m^2_{23}$, $\theta_{13}$ and $\delta_\mathrm{CP}$, using an exposure of $1.49(1.12)\times10^{21}$ POT in Forward(Reverse) Horn Current mode. By requiring that the value of $\theta_{13}$ should be consistent with reactor neutrino measurements, CP-conserving hypotheses ($\delta_\mathrm{CP} = \{0,\pi\}$) are excluded at over $2\sigma$

Abstract

To determine the direction to a source of neutrinos (and antineutrinos) is an important problem for the physics of supernovae and of the Earth. The direction to a source of antineutrinos can be estimated through the reaction of inverse beta decay. We show that the reactor neutrino experiment Double Chooz has unique capabilities to study antineutrino signal from point-like sources. Contemporary experimental data on antineutrino directionality is given. A rigorous mathematical approach for neutrino direction studies has been developed. Exact expressions for the precision of the simple mean estimator of neutrinos’ direction for normal and exponential distributions for a finite sample and for the limiting case of many events have been obtained.

Abstract

The Double Chooz reactor antineutrino experiment aims for a precision measurement of the neutrino mixing angle θ 13 . Located at the Chooz nuclear power plant in France, it observes an energy dependent deficit in the electron antineutrino spectrum, currently with one detector filled with gadolinium-loaded liquid scintillator at a baseline of 1.05 km. The Double Chooz analysis utilizes different approaches to extract θ 13 : A combined rate and spectral shape fit as well as a background-model-independent analysis based on reactor power variations are performed, giving consistent results. Among the recent reactor-based oscillation experiments with comparable baseline it was the only one to observe reactor shutdown phases, during which all reactors are turned off. These enabled to measure the backgrounds solely, allowing to crosscheck the background models used in the oscillation analysis. At present an improved analysis was put forward with twice as much data statistics collected compared to the last publication. Revised selection criteria and background studies enhance the signal to background ratio while a decrease in the corresponding uncertainties is achieved. Along with an improved energy calibration the overall systematic uncertainty on θ 13 is reduced, preparing for a two detector analysis. The new analysis obtains from 467.90 live days with 66.5 GW-ton-years of exposure (reactor power × detector mass × live time) a value of sin 2 ⁡ 2 θ 13 = 0.090 − 0.029 + 0.032 (stat + syst) .

Reactor neutrinos have been detected in the past 50 years by various detectors for different purposes. Beginning in the 1980s, neutrino physicists have tried to use neutrinos to monitor reactors and develop an optimized detector for nuclear safeguards. Recently, motivated by neutrino oscillation physics, the technology and scale of reactor neutrino detection have progressed considerably. In this review, I will give an overview of the detection technology for reactor neutrinos, and describe the issues related to further improvements in optimized detectors for reactor monitoring.

Neutrinos produced by nuclear reactors have played a major role in advancing our knowledge of the properties of neutrinos. Abstract

We report results from searches of pseudoscalar and vector bosonic super-weakly interacting massive particles (super-WIMP) in the TEXONO experiment at the Kuo-Sheng Nuclear Power Station, using 314.15 kg days of data from $n$-type Point-Contact Germanium detector. The super-WIMPs are absorbed and deposit total energy in the detector, such that the experimental signatures are spectral peaks corresponding to the super-WIMP mass. Measured data are compatible with the background model, and no significant excess of super-WIMP signals are observed. We derived new upper limits on couplings of electrons with the pseudoscalar and vector bosonic super-WIMPs in the sub-keV mass region, assuming they are the dominant contributions to the dark matter density of our galaxy., Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures

The electron antineutrino spectrum in the Stereo reactor experiment (ILL Grenoble) is measured via the inverse beta decay signals in an organic liquid scintillator. The six target cells of the Stereo detector are filled with about 1800 litres of Gd-loaded liquid scintillator optimised for the requirements of the experiment. These target cells are surrounded by similar cells containing liquid scintillator without the Gd-loading. The development and characteristics of these scintillators are reported. In particular, the transparency, light production and pulse shape discrimination capabilities of the organic liquids are discussed., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures
