4. Single-beam room-temperature atomic magnetometer with large bandwidth and dynamic range

We present a single-beam atomic magnetometer operating at room temperature for the measurement of ac magnetic fields. The magnetometer functions in the non-linear regime of magneto-optical rotation of $^{85}$Rb atomic vapour. We demonstrate a sensitivity of $\sim 0.9$ pT$/ \sqrt{Hz}$ at 2 kHz and a large bandwidth of 24 kHz. The dynamic range of measurement is $10^6$, making the sensor effective even in Earth's field. We present the signal-to-noise and bandwidth characteristics of the system for both shielded and unshielded modes of operation. Moreover, we perform theoretical analysis for the atom-light system for the single laser beam configuration. The effect of light intensity and detuning on the magnetometer are studied theoretically as well as experimentally to understand the strengths and limitations of the technique., Comment: 7 pages, 6 Figures

Magnetic/non-magnetic/heterostructured ultra-thin films' characterisation is highly demanding due to the emerging diverse applications of such films. Diverse measurements are usually performed on such systems to infer their electrical, optical and magnetic properties. We demonstrate that MOKE-based spin-Hall effect of light (SHEL) is a versatile surface characterization tool for studying materials' magnetic and dielectric ordering. Using this technique, we measure magnetic field dependent complex Kerr angle and the coercivity in ultra-thin films of permalloy (Py) and at molybdenum disulphide (MoS$_2$) - permalloy (MSPy) hetero-structure interfaces. The measurements are compared with standard magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) studies to demonstrate that SHEL-MOKE is a practical alternative to the conventional MOKE method, with competitive sensitivity. A comprehensive theoretical model and simulation data are provided to further strengthen the potential of this simple non-invasive optical method. Magnetoelectric (ME) effect refers to the coupling between electric and magnetic fields in a medium resulting in electric polarization induced by magnetic fields and magnetization induced by electric fields. The linear ME effect in certain magnetoelectric materials such as multiferroics has been of great interest due to its application in the fabrication of spintronics devices, memories, and magnetic sensors. However, the exclusive studies on the nonlinear ME effect are mostly centered on the investigation of second-harmonic generation in chiral materials. Here, we report the demonstration of nonlinear wave mixing of optical electric fields and radio-frequency (rf) magnetic fields in thermal atomic vapor, which is the consequence of the higher-order nonlinear ME effect in the medium. The experimental results are explained by comparing with density matrix calculations of the system. We also experimentally verify the expected dependence of the generated field amplitudes on the rf field magnitude as evidence of the magnetoelectric effect. This study can open up the possibility for precision rf-magnetometry due to its advantage in terms of larger dynamic range and arbitrary frequency resolution.

Ultra-sensitive measurement of the magneto-optical rotation, due to interaction of linearly-polarized light passing through room-temperature Rb 85 atoms, in response to change in longitudinal magnetic field (\delta B_z ) is demonstrated using the weak measurement method. The polarization rotation angle measurement sensitivity (\delta \psi ) of 16 \mu~rad and hence of the magnetometer of 1 nT, achieved using the weak measurement method is better than the balanced optical polarimetry results by a factor of three. The improvement in the measurement sensitivity is realized via optical amplification of the polarization rotation angle via spin-orbit coupled light beam-field. The method is devoid of external rf modulation, allows for optimal tunability of sensitivity depending on the dynamic range of the applied magnetic field and the sensitivity can be further enhanced by operating in the Spin Exchange Relaxation Free regime of alkali spin polarization., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

- Abstract
For the past few decades, the one of the most problems in India is the water scarcity. It has been there not only in our country but also trough out the world. Even though the world was covered by water by two third compare to the land surface, still we are facing this water scarcity issue. The major factor behinds this are improper water savings, insufficient power supply to the DAM and reservoirs and due to the improper closing and opening of the DAM. Till date the handling of DAM and reservoirs are carried out manually and it requires an person be present there throughout a day to monitor the level of DAM. The implementation of control mechanism by the Programmable Logic Controller is possible, but it requires a huge amount of money needs to be invested. To resolve this issue, a low cost embedded system was proposed in this article. It consists of two section namely DAM and channel section. Separate control is designed for both this section and it will be controlled through wireless sensor based network system. This proposed system not only monitoring the level of the DAM and channel section, it will also provide ample amount of water to the civilians on the request basis. A unique App also was developed and it will be installed in all the civilians mobile in the particular zone. The authentication of the civilians will be done through the OTP generated by the server. This system also gives an warning message to the civilians in an particular zone in emergency case such as during flood and heavy rain conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study experimentally the collision between a sphere falling through a viscous fluid, and a solid plate below. It is known that there is a well-defined threshold Stokes number above which the sphere rebounds from such a collision. Our experiment tests for direct contact between the colliding bodies, and contrary to prior theoretical predictions, shows that solid-on-solid contact occurs even for Stokes numbers just above the threshold for rebounding. The dissipation is fluid-dominated, though details of the contact mechanics depend on the surface and bulk properties of the solids. Our experiments and a model calculation indicate that mechanical contact between the two colliding objects is generic and will occur for any realistic surface roughness., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

We describe directed searches for continuous gravitational waves in data from the sixth LIGO science data run. The targets were nine young supernova remnants not associated with pulsars; eight of the remnants are associated with non-pulsing suspected neutron stars. One target's parameters are uncertain enough to warrant two searches, for a total of ten. Each search covered a broad band of frequencies and first and second frequency derivatives for a fixed sky direction. The searches coherently integrated data from the two LIGO interferometers over time spans from 5.3-25.3 days using the matched-filtering F-statistic. We found no credible gravitational-wave signals. We set 95% confidence upper limits as strong (low) as $4\times10^{-25}$ on intrinsic strain, $2\times10^{-7}$ on fiducial ellipticity, and $3\times10^{-6}$ on r-mode amplitude. These beat the indirect limits from energy conservation and are within the range of theoretical predictions for neutron-star ellipticities and r-mode amplitudes., Comment: Updated following erratum. We present results of a search for continuously-emitted gravitational radiation, directed at the brightest low-mass X-ray binary, Scorpius X-1. Our semi-coherent analysis covers 10 days of LIGO S5 data ranging from 50-550 Hz, and performs an incoherent sum of coherent $\mathcal{F}$-statistic power distributed amongst frequency-modulated orbital sidebands. All candidates not removed at the veto stage were found to be consistent with noise at a 1% false alarm rate. We present Bayesian 95% confidence upper limits on gravitational-wave strain amplitude using two different prior distributions: a standard one, with no a priori assumptions about the orientation of Scorpius X-1; and an angle-restricted one, using a prior derived from electromagnetic observations. Median strain upper limits of 1.3e-24 and 8e-25 are reported at 150 Hz for the standard and angle-restricted searches respectively. This proof of principle analysis was limited to a short observation time by unknown effects of accretion on the intrinsic spin frequency of the neutron star, but improves upon previous upper limits by factors of ~1.4 for the standard, and 2.3 for the angle-restricted search at the sensitive region of the detector., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures

The fast-emerging diverse applications using a variety of magnetic/non-magnetic heterostructure ultra-thin films warrant the sensitive characterization of the electrical, optical, and magnetic properties of the interface. As a practical alternate to the conventional magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) method, we propose and demonstrate the spin-Hall effect of the light (SHEL)-based MOKE method with competitive sensitivity and scope for further improvement. The SHEL-MOKE technique is a versatile surface characterization tool for studying materials' magnetic and dielectric ordering, which are extracted from the variations to the phase-polarization characteristics of a focused beam of light reflected at the interface, as a function of the applied magnetic field. Using this technique, we measure the magnetic field dependent complex Kerr angle and the coercivity in ultra-thin films of permalloy (Py) and at molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2)—permalloy (MSPy) hetero-structure interfaces. A comprehensive theoretical model and simulation data are provided to strengthen the potential of this simple non-invasive optical method. The theoretical model is subsequently applied to extract the optical conductivity of non-magnetic ultra-thin layers of MoS 2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction and Aim: Stress is a reaction of the body to substantial or unusual demands. It, a complex reaction of the neurologic and endocrinologic system which can initiate the ‘Fight or Flight’ response. This may lead to headache, tense muscles, insomnia. Stress can alter the memory function, immune function, metabolism, and susceptibility to the disease. The effect of stress and relationship in making teachers quite inefficient in their profession is a growing concern. The present study objective is to investigate the effective significance of exercise, relaxation, and ergonomics on physiological stress in teachers. Materials and Methods: A total of 30 teachers, both male and female were randomly selected. They supported the inclusion and exclusion criteria and were between 30 to 60 years, separated into 2 groups. They were asked to fill necessary information in the stress profile for teachers. The subjects with moderate to high stress were taken for the study and were divided into two groups. Group ‘A’ were given aerobic stepper exercise and relaxation techniques. Group ‘B’ were given aerobic stepper exercise and suggestions given on ergonomic correction for an intervention period of about 8 weeks, 5 days per week 45 minutes per session. Pre- and post-test values were taken on blood pressure and blood glucose level using sphygmomanometer and glucometer. Results: The pre- and post-test between group A and group B show a highly significant difference. However, group A showed higher significance than group B. Conclusion: According to the findings, aerobic stepper exercise with relaxation techniques shows highly significant difference and aerobic stepper exercise with ergonomic correction shows significance but aerobic exercise with relaxation technique is highly effective in reducing stress and maintaining blood pressure and glucose level in teachers.

Oral cancer is a foremost health concern and India accounts for about one third of its universal burden. About 80% of oral cancers in India are oral squamous cell carcinoma. They are associated with alarming fatality rates and the inability to prevent tumour metastasis being a prime reason. Considerate knowledge on the molecular events of tumour progression may give insight on developing rationale for the targeted prevention. This review intends to highlight the critical role of primary tumour and the tumour microenvironment in initiating metastasis and the mechanisms underlying the establishment of metastatic foci. Better understanding of these processes may help in targeting more research into the control of metastasis and thus disease control.

Immunotherapy is a promising approach in the management of human cancers and has been proven to provide a durable response in many cancers. It is helpful as an adjuvant therapy for cancers and at present is considered as a fourth pillar supporting surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In the treatment of oral cancer, immunotherapy is approved in late-stage diseases where surgical resection cannot be carried out or fails, leading to recurrences and metastasis. Evidences suggest that when given as a first-line treatment, it can elicit an immune response that shrinks tumours, which could provide long-term benefit for patients. But unlike the traditional approach which follows the uniform protocol for all oral cancer patients, effective immunotherapy requires a more site-specific personalized approach. The aim of this paper is to review the various immune evasive mechanisms adopted by tumour cells and their relevance as potential targets for immunotherapy in oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma. Rotational-Echo DOuble Resonance, REDOR, is an experimentally robust and a well-established dipolar-recoupling technique to measure dipolar couplings between isolated pairs of spin-1/2 heteronuclei in solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance. REDOR can also be used to estimate motional order parameters when the bond distance is known, for example, in the case of directly bound nuclei. However, the relatively fast dipolar dephasing for strongly coupled spin-1/2 pairs, such as
13 C–1 H, makes the stroboscopic measurement required in this experiment challenging, even at fast Magic-Angle-Spinning (MAS) frequencies. In such cases, modified REDOR-based methods like Shifted-REDOR (S-REDOR) are used to scale the dipolar coupling compared to REDOR. This is achieved by changing the position of one of the two recoupling π-pulses in a rotor period. This feature, however, comes at the cost of mixing multiple Fourier components of the dipolar coupling and can, additionally, require high radio-frequency amplitudes to realise small scaling factors. We introduce here a general pulse scheme which involves shifting both the π pulses in the REDOR scheme to achieve arbitrary scaling factors whilst retaining the robustness and simplicity of REDOR recoupling and avoiding the disadvantages of S-REDOR. The classical REDOR is a specific case of this scheme with a scaling factor of one. We demonstrate the results on isolated13 C–15 N and1 H–13 C spin pairs at 20 and 62.5 kHz MAS, respectively. We describe directed searches for continuous gravitational waves in data from the sixth LIGO science data run. The targets were nine young supernova remnants not associated with pulsars; eight of the remnants are associated with non-pulsing suspected neutron stars. One target's parameters are uncertain enough to warrant two searches, for a total of ten. Each search covered a broad band of frequencies and first and second frequency derivatives for a fixed sky direction. The searches coherently integrated data from the two LIGO interferometers over time spans from 5.3-25.3 days using the matched-filtering F-statistic. We found no credible gravitational-wave signals. We set 95% confidence upper limits as strong (low) as $4\times10^{-25}$ on intrinsic strain, $2\times10^{-7}$ on fiducial ellipticity, and $4\times10^{-5}$ on r-mode amplitude. These beat the indirect limits from energy conservation and are within the range of theoretical predictions for neutron-star ellipticities and r-mode amplitudes.

- Abstract
Chromobacterium violaceum, a gram-negative, facultative anaerobic, non-sporing coccobacillus, producing a natural antibiotic called violacein was extracted from Chromobacterium violaceum MTCC 2656, collection of Chandigarh. The present study reports different types of microbial population along with Chromobacterium violaceum in 36 samples of spoiled vegetables. In the numerous microbial populations, three different strains (HMCCC 45, HMCCC 46 and HMCCC 47) were isolated and subjected to various morphological and biochemical tests. The results reveal that the three strains isolated, HMCCC 46 was similar to the standard except that HMCCC 46 colonies were dark violet in colour. The antibiotic sensitivity test of HMCCC 46 revealed that it was resistant to vancomycin, ampicillin, linezolid, and susceptible to colistin, oxacillin, gentamicin, norfloxacin, chloramphenicol, amikacin.

Abstract Most hospitalized patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) experience pain. Despite the known risks associated with opioids in IBD including risk for misuse, overdose, infection, readmission, and even death, opioid use is more prevalent in IBD than any other chronic gastrointestinal condition. Most hospitalized IBD patients receive opioids; however, opioids have not been shown to improve pain during hospitalization. We conducted a randomized controlled trial in hospitalized patients with IBD to evaluate the impact of a proactive opioid-sparing analgesic protocol. Wearable devices measured activity and sleep throughout their hospitalization. Chronic opioid users, post-operative, and pregnant patients were excluded. The primary endpoint was a change in pain scores from admission to discharge. Secondary endpoints included opioid use, functional activity, sleep duration and quality, and length of stay. Of 329 adults with IBD evaluated for eligibility, 33 were enrolled and randomized to the intervention or usual care. Both the intervention and control group demonstrated significant decreases in pain scores from admission to discharge (− 2.6 ± 2.6 vs. − 3.0 ± 3.2). Those randomized to the intervention tended to have lower pain scores than the control group regardless of hospital day (3.02 ± 0.90 vs. 4.29 ± 0.81, p = 0.059), used significantly fewer opioids (daily MME 11.8 ± 15.3 vs. 30.9 ± 42.2, p = 0.027), and had a significantly higher step count by Day 4 (2330 ± 1709 vs. 1050 ± 1214; p = 0.014). There were no differences in sleep duration, sleep quality, readmission, or length-of-stay between the two groups. A proactive analgesic protocol does not result in worsening pain but does significantly reduce opioid-use in hospitalized IBD patients. Cancer is liable for 9.6 million ostensive deaths worldwide but Covid 19 pandemic may further deepen the mortality rates. Oral cancer is a grave boisterous delinquent across the globe. It is the 6th most common malignancy in the world and India accounts for about one third of total global burden of oral cancers. According to World Health Organisation (WHO), nearly 40% of newly spotted oral cancer cases across the globe is accounted from Asian countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka. Recent data projected an increase of about 20% in mortality rates which may further upsurge after the consecutive waves of COVID-19 catastrophe. More than one lakh cancer are going undiagnosed per month in India as in a pandemic, other health issues may be deserted by the community and outed by medical domains. Though the carcinogenic potential of Covid -19 virus is not wholly explored but there are probable connotation in literatures. This transient over view is a modest attempt to fetch out the conceivable relation of covid 19 in hastening the biological behaviour of tumour cells. It also highlights the urgency of formulating national health policies to prioritise oral oncology care in India
