Plants exhibit morphological plasticity in response to changes in the proportion of far-red radiation (FR). However, little is known about the response to a sudden increase of FR component. Cucumber seedlings were acclimatized to radiation without FR (FR-) for 1 - 5 d after germination, and then transferred to radiation containing FR (FR+) at levels similar to those in natural sunlight. Other seedlings were acclimatized to FR- or FR+, which was maintained continuously. The sudden increase in FR damaged the cotyledons and the first true leaf, especially when radiation was changed from FR- to FR+ at days 3 or 4 after germination. Necrosis of the damaged leaves may have resulted from inhibition of water flow in leaf xylem, because wilting and decreased stomatal conductance were observed simultaneously with leaf necrosis. Plants in the treatment groups that showed the most frequent damage showed two peaks in cotyledon elongation. This suggests that the leaves that had been acclimatized to FR- were easily damaged by the sudden promotion of leaf expansion caused by FR+.

During the occurrence of floods, the government generally tries to determine the extent of the continuously changing inundation (water) area as a disaster response for planning evacuations and designing drainage systems. One of the most common methods to identify this area during the daytime involves the interpretation of aerial optical images and videos that are obtained using an airplane, helicopter, or satellite. However, these aerial approach methods have not been established convincingly for their use during the night time. Therefore, to identify the water area at night, two hand-held optical sensors were used in this study, namely: an ultrasensitive camera (Sony SL camera α7S), and a thermal infrared camera (Optris thermography PI640). The night-time aerial performance was evaluated using a helicopter, along with a supplementary night-time examination on the ground. Herein, we targeted river water areas during normal conditions. As a result, it was determined that the water area could be identified clearly with an ultrasensitive camera that has an ISO sensitivity between 51200 and 102400. The thermal infrared camera was able to identify the water area to have a higher temperature than that of the surrounding area. However, in some cases, the water area boundaries were not clear. Thus, as the thermal infrared camera was susceptible to varying conditions, supplemental use of an ultrasensitive camera was determined to be effective for the identification of inundation (water) areas at night. The significance of this study is established by the fact that the studied sensors can be easily transported in a helicopter or mounted on a UAV for night-time applications.

We compared photosynthetic performance between cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) leaves acclimated to saturating irradiances with high red: far red (R:FR = 10) and normal R:FR (= 1.4) ratios. The net photosynthetic rate (PN) and stomatal conductance (gs) of the leaves acclimated to high R:FR were greater than those of the leaves acclimated to normal R:FR; the greater gs partly explains the greater PN. The greater gs of the high-R:FR-leaves probably resulted from a higher stomatal density and/or a greater size. PN of the high R:FR leaves was still greater than that of the normal R:FR leaves at the same intercellular CO2 concentration (ci). This indicates that non-stomatal factors also increased the photosynthetic capacity of the high R:FR leaves. The maximum Rubisco carboxylase activity estimated from a PN-ci curve analysis was also greater in the high R:FR leaves, however, the intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUEi = PN/gs) of the high R:FR leaves was lower than that of the normal R:FR leaves.

The identification of genes of agronomic interest in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is hampered by its allopolyploid nature (2n = 6x = 42; AABBDD) and its very large genome, which is largely covered by transposable elements. However, owing to this complex structure, aneuploid stocks can be developed in which fragments or entire chromosomes are missing, sometimes resulting in visible phenotypes that help in the cloning of affected genes. In this study, the 2C gametocidal chromosome from Aegilops cylindrica was used to develop a set of 113 deletion lines for chromosome 3D in the reference cultivar Chinese Spring. Eighty-four markers were used to show that the deletions evenly covered chromosome 3D and ranged from 6.5 to 357 Mb. Cytogenetic analyses confirmed that the physical size of the deletions correlated well with the known molecular size deduced from the reference sequence. This new genetic stock will be useful for positional cloning of genes on chromosome 3D, especially for Ph2 affecting homoeologous pairing in bread wheat.

Three transgenic HOSUT lines of winter wheat, HOSUT12, HOSUT20, and HOSUT24, each harbor a single copy of the cDNA for the barley sucrose transporter gene HvSUT1 (SUT), which was fused to the barley endosperm-specific Hordein B1 promoter (HO; the HOSUT transgene). Previously, flow cytometry combined with PCR analysis demonstrated that the HOSUT transgene had been integrated into different wheat chromosomes: 7A, 5D, and 4A in HOSUT12, HOSUT20, and HOSUT24, respectively. In order to confirm the chromosomal location of the HOSUT transgene by a cytological approach using wheat aneuploid stocks, we crossed corresponding nullisomic-tetrasomic lines with the three HOSUT lines, namely nullisomic 7A-tetrasomic 7B with HOSUT12, nullisomic 5D-tetrasomic 5B with HOSUT20, and nullisomic 4A-tetrasomic 4B with HOSUT24. We examined the resulting chromosomal constitutions and the presence of the HOSUT transgene in the F2 progeny by means of chromosome banding and PCR. The chromosome banding patterns of the critical chromosomes in the original HOSUT lines showed no difference from those of the corresponding wild type chromosomes. The presence or absence of the critical chromosomes completely corresponded to the presence or absence of the HOSUT transgene in the F2 plants. Investigating telocentric chromosomes occurred in the F2 progeny, which were derived from the respective critical HOSUT chromosomes, we found that the HOSUT transgene was individually integrated on the long arms of chromosomes 4A, 7A, and 5D in the three HOSUT lines. Thus, in this study we verified the chromosomal locations of the transgene, which had previously been determined by flow cytometry, and moreover revealed the chromosome-arm locations of the HOSUT transgene in the HOSUT lines.

Background: Identification of transgene insertion sites in plant genomes has practical implications for crop breeding and is a stepping stone to analyze transgene function. However, single copy sequences are not always easy to localize in large plant genomes by standard approaches. Results: We employed flow cytometric chromosome sorting to determine chromosomal location of barley sucrose transporter construct in three transgenic lines of common wheat. Flow-sorted chromosomes were used as template for PCR and fluorescence in situ hybridization to identify chromosomes with transgenes. The chromosomes carrying the transgenes were then confirmed by PCR using DNA amplified from single flow-sorted chromosomes as template. Conclusions: Insertion sites of the transgene were unambiguously localized to chromosomes 4A, 7A and 5D in three wheat transgenic lines. The procedure presented in this study is applicable for localization of any single-copy sequence not only in wheat, but in any plant species where suspension of intact mitotic chromosomes suitable for flow cytometric sorting can be prepared. We dissected barley chromosomes 1H and 6H added to common wheat by the gametocidal system and identified structural changes of the chromosomes by fluorescence in situ hybridization and genomic in situ hybridization. We found five aberrations of chromosome 1H, all of which lacked the long arm: one small fragment with the subtelomeric HvT01 sequence, one terminal deletion, and three telocentric chromosomes of the short arm. We established 33 dissection lines carrying single aberrant 6H chromosomes, of which 15 were deletions, 16 were translocations and two were isochromosomes. We conducted PCR analysis of the aberrant barley chromosomes using 75 and 81 EST markers specific to chromosomes 1H and 6H, respectively. This enabled us to construct a cytological map of chromosome 6H and to compare it to the previously reported genetic map and also to the physical map, which were released by the International Barley Genome Sequencing Consortium. The marker orders on the three maps were largely in agreement. The cytological map had better resolution in the proximal region of chromosome 6H than the corresponding genetic map. We discuss some of the discrepancies in marker order between the three maps that might be due to intraspecific polymorphism and gene duplication, as well as to technical problems inherent in the physical mapping process. Some species of the genus Aegilops, a wild relative of wheat, carry chromosomes that after introducing to wheat exhibit preferential transmission to progeny. Their selective retention is a result of the abortion of gametes lacking them due to induced chromosomal aberrations. These chromosomes are termed Gametocidal (Gc) and, based on their effects, they are categorized into three types: mild, intense or severe, and very strong. Gc elements within the same homoeologous chromosome groups of Aegilops (II, III, or IV) demonstrate similar Gc action. This review explores the intriguing dynamics of Gc chromosomes and encompasses comprehensive insights into their source species, behavioral aspects, mode of action, interactions, suppressions, and practical applications of the Gc system in wheat breeding. By delving into these areas, this work aims to contribute to the development of novel plant genetic resources for wheat breeding. The insights provided herein shed light on the utilization of Gc chromosomes to produce chromosomal rearrangements in wheat and its wild relatives, thereby facilitating the generation of chromosome deletions, translocations, and telosomic lines. The Gc approach has significantly advanced various aspects of wheat genetics, including the introgression of novel genes and alleles, molecular markers and gene mapping, and the exploration of homoeologous relationships within Triticeae species. The mystery lies in why gametes possessing Gc genes maintain their normality while those lacking Gc genes suffer abnormalities, highlighting an unresolved research gap necessitating deeper investigation.

The analysis of cells frozen within the International Space Station (ISS) will provide crucial insights into the impact of the space environment on cellular functions and properties. The objective of this study was to develop a method for cryopreserving blood cells under the specific constraints of the ISS. In a ground experiment, mouse blood was directly mixed with a cryoprotectant and gradually frozen at -80 °C. Thawing the frozen blood sample resulted in the successful recovery of viable mononuclear cells when using a mixed solution of dimethylsulfoxide and hydroxyethyl starch as a cryoprotectant. In addition, we developed new freezing cases to minimize storage space utilization within the ISS freezer. Finally, we confirmed the recovery of major mononuclear immune cell subsets from the cryopreserved blood cells through a high dimensional analysis of flow cytometric data using 13 cell surface markers. Consequently, this ground study lays the foundation for the cryopreservation of viable blood cells on the ISS, enabling their analysis upon return to Earth. The application of this method in ISS studies will contribute to understanding the impact of space environments on human cells. Therapeutically manipulating the stimulator of interferon genes (STING) pathway has promising potential for enhancing antitumor immunity. Agonists of this pathway (STING agonists) are being evaluated in clinical trials. Loading the STING agonists into lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) increases their safety and efficacy. We previously developed STING agonists loaded LNPs consisting of the ionizable lipid YSK12-C4 (YSK12-LNPs), which showed significant antitumor effects. However, it is largely unclear how the in vivo fate of STING agonists loaded LNPs affects the antitumor immune responses. In this study, we compared the YSK12-LNPs with LNPs composed of DLin-MC3-DMA (MC3-LNPs) showing different in vivo fates. Biodistribution and flow cytometry analyses of mouse tissues revealed that the MC3-LNPs delivered higher amounts of STING agonists to the liver than the YSK12-LNPs. Additionally, significantly more liver leukocytes internalized the MC3-LNPs than the YSK12-LNPs. In contrast, the YSK12-LNPs delivered higher amounts of STING agonists to the liver leukocytes than the MC3-LNPs, leading to the effective induction of innate immunity and inflammation in the tumors. However, the antitumor effects in the B16-F10 lung metastasis and CT26 tumor models were comparable. Interestingly, flow cytometry analyses suggested that the YSK12-LNPs were more likely to activate natural killer cells and M1 macrophages, while the MC3-LNPs were more likely to activate CD8 + T cells. Previously, we biosynthesized an evolved version of a bio-based polylactide (PLA) on microbial platforms using our engineered lactate-polymerizing enzyme (LPE). This lactate (LA)-based copolyester, LAHB, has advantages over PLA, including improved flexibility and biodegradability, and its properties can be regulated through the LA fraction. To expand the LA-incorporation capacity and improve polymer properties, in the state of in vivo LAHB production, propionyl-CoA transferases (PCTs) that exhibited enhanced production of LA-CoA than the conventional PCTs were selected. Here, the present study has demonstrated that the LA fraction of LAHB could be altered using various PCTs. Enhanced PCT performance was achieved by balancing polymer production and cell growth. Both events are governed by the use of acetyl-CoA, a commonly shared key metabolite. This could be attributed to the different reactivities of individual PCTs towards acetyl-CoA, which serves both as a CoA donor and a leading compound in the TCA cycle. Interestingly, we found complete sequence randomness in the LAHB copolymers, independent of the LA fraction. The mechanism of LA fraction-independent sequence randomness is discussed. It remains to be elucidated whether Ca 2+ antagonists induce pharmacological preconditioning to protect the heart against ischemia/reperfusion injury. The aim of this study was to determine whether and how pretreatment with a Ca 2+ antagonist, azelnidipine, could protect cardiomyocytes against hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) injury in vitro. Using HL-1 cardiomyocytes, we studied effects of azelnidipine on NO synthase (NOS) expression, NO production, cell death and apoptosis during H/R. Action potential durations (APDs) were determined by the whole-cell patch-clamp technique. Azelnidipine enhanced endothelial NOS phosphorylation and NO production in HL-1 cells under normoxia, which was abolished by a heat shock protein 90 inhibitor, geldanamycin, and an antioxidant, N-acetylcysteine. Pretreatment with azelnidipine reduced cell death and shortened APDs during H/R. These effects of azelnidipine were diminished by a NOS inhibitor, L-NAME, but were influenced by neither a T-type Ca 2+ channel inhibitor, NiCl 2 , nor a N-type Ca 2+ channel inhibitor, ω-conotoxin. The azelnidipine-induced reduction in cell death was not significantly enhanced by either additional azelnidipine treatment during H/R or increasing extracellular Ca 2+ concentrations. RNA sequence (RNA-seq) data indicated that azelnidipine-induced attenuation of cell death, which depended on enhanced NO production, did not involve any significant modifications of gene expression responsible for the NO/cGMP/PKG pathway. We conclude that pretreatment with azelnidipine protects HL-1 cardiomyocytes against H/R injury via NO-dependent APD shortening and L-type Ca 2+ channel blockade independently of effects on gene expression., (© 2024. When radioactive materials are released into the environment due to nuclear power plant accidents, they may enter into the body, and exposing it to internal radiation for long periods of time. Although several agents have been developed that help excrete radioactive elements from the digestive tract, only one type of radioactive element can be removed using a single agent. Therefore, we considered the simultaneous removal of caesium (Cs) and strontium (Sr) by utilising the multiple metal removal mechanisms of probiotic bacteria. In this study, the Cs and Sr removal capacities of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria were investigated. Observation using an electron probe micro analyser suggested that Cs was accumulated within the bacterial cells. Since Sr was removed non metabolically, it is likely that it was removed by a mechanism different from that of Cs. The amount of Cs and Sr that the cells could simultaneously retain decreased when compared to that for each element alone, but some strains showed only a slight reduction in removal. For example, Bifidobacterium adolescentis JCM1275 could simultaneously retain 55.7 mg-Cs/g-dry cell and 8.1 mg-Sr/g-dry cell. Tank-binding kinase 1 (TBK1) is a Ser/Thr kinase that is involved in many intracellular processes, such as innate immunity, cell cycle, and apoptosis. TBK1 is also important for phosphorylating the autophagy adaptors that mediate the selective autophagic removal of damaged mitochondria. However, the mechanism by which PINK1-Parkin-mediated mitophagy activates TBK1 remains largely unknown. Here, we show that the autophagy adaptor optineurin (OPTN) provides a unique platform for TBK1 activation. Both the OPTN-ubiquitin and the OPTN-pre-autophagosomal structure (PAS) interaction axes facilitate assembly of the OPTN-TBK1 complex at a contact sites between damaged mitochondria and the autophagosome formation sites. At this assembly point, a positive feedback loop for TBK1 activation is initiated that accelerates hetero-autophosphorylation of the protein. Expression of monobodies engineered here to bind OPTN impaired OPTN accumulation at contact sites, as well as the subsequent activation of TBK1, thereby inhibiting mitochondrial degradation. Introduction: The pathogenesis and pathology of secondary osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip, which is mainly due to developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), in Japan are obscure. There are some reports on the thickening of the hip capsule, but the relationship between the thickness of the hip capsule and the pelvic alignment due to hip deformity is not well known. This research investigated whether the capsular thickness of female DDH patients was related to pelvic alignment., Methods: This single-center cross-sectional study included female patients aged 50-79 years (n=13) who had undergone primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) due to secondary hip OA with a background of DDH. The part of the hip capsule including the iliofemoral ligament was resected and measured directly with a digital caliper. The Sharp angle, center-edge (CE) angle, sacral slope (SS), pelvic tilt (PT), pelvic incidence (PI), and lumbar lordosis angle (LLA) were measured with an X-ray image to investigate the relationship between the capsular thickness and the pelvic posture., Results: Pearson's correlation coefficient showed a negative correlation between hip capsular thickness and Sharp angle (r=-0.57, p>0.05). No significant correlation was found between the thickness of the hip capsule and the sagittal X-ray parameters including SS, PT, PI, LLA, and CE angle in the coronal plane., Conclusion: The thickness of the hip capsule is moderately associated with the Sharp angle on the coronal plane. The Great Kanto Earthquake that occurred in the southern part of Kanto district, Japan, on September 1, 1923, was reported to have triggered numerous landslides (over 89,080 slope failures over an area of 86.32 km 2 ). This study investigated the relationship between the landslide occurrence caused by this earthquake and geomorphology, geology, soil, seismic ground motion, and coseismic deformation. We found that a higher landslide density was mainly related to a larger absolute curvature and a higher slope angle, as well as to several geological units (Neogene plutonic rock, accretionary prism, and metamorphic rocks). Moreover, we performed decision tree analyses, which showed that slope angle, geology, and coseismic deformation were correlated to landslide density in that order. However, no clear correlation was found between landslide density and seismic ground motion. These results suggest that landslide density was greater in areas of large slope angle or fragile geology in the area with strong shaking enough to trigger landslides.

Autophagy is primarily activated by cellular stress, such as starvation or mitochondrial damage. However, stress-independent autophagy is activated by unclear mechanisms in several cell types, such as thymic epithelial cells (TECs). Here we report that the mitochondrial protein, C15ORF48, is a critical inducer of stress-independent autophagy. Mechanistically, C15ORF48 reduces the mitochondrial membrane potential and lowers intracellular ATP levels, thereby activating AMP-activated protein kinase and its downstream Unc-51-like kinase 1. Interestingly, C15ORF48-dependent induction of autophagy upregulates intracellular glutathione levels, promoting cell survival by reducing oxidative stress. Mice deficient in C15orf48 show a reduction in stress-independent autophagy in TECs, but not in typical starvation-induced autophagy in skeletal muscles. Moreover, C15orf48 -/- mice develop autoimmunity, which is consistent with the fact that the stress-independent autophagy in TECs is crucial for the thymic self-tolerance. Vitiligo is an acquired chronic depigmenting disorder of the skin and is characterized by the destruction of melanocytes. One of the clinical features of vitiligo is that damage to normal skin frequently results in the formation of depigmented macules, which is known as Köebner's phenomenon (KP). Here, we presented a case of vitiligo, in which depigmented macules followed the course of a dilated varicose vein. Dilatation of blood vessels was considered to contribute to the development of the vitiliginous lesions as a trigger for KP. Any kind of skin injury can trigger KP, but this is only the second case in which a dilated blood vessel caused KP in vitiligo. J. Med. Invest. 71 : 177-178, February, 2024.

Background/aim: In recent years, the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) has been reported as a predictor of prognosis in many patients with cancer. This study investigated the association of preoperative GNRI with the occurrence of adverse events and duration of treatment with capecitabine plus oxaliplatin (CAPOX), a postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy, in 59 patients with colorectal cancer from September 2019 to April 2022., Patients and Methods: A cut-off value of 100.9 was used to categorize patients into high and low GNRI groups., Results: The incidence of grade ≥2 leukopenia (p=0.03), and all grades peripheral neuropathy (p=0.04) were significantly more frequent in the low GNRI group. Analysis of factors influencing treatment duration by univariate and multivariate Cox regression proportional hazards models showed a significant difference in GNRI (p=0.0097)., Conclusion: GNRI, a nutritional indicator assessed before the start of treatment, influences the occurrence of adverse events and duration of treatment with CAPOX as adjuvant chemotherapy. Background: Sleep quality in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP) may affect quality of life (QoL), possibly due to worsening pain, central sensitization (CS), and cognitive factors. However, causal relationship among the factors has not been confirmed yet., Objective: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that sleep quality in patients with CLBP is attributable to pain, cognitive factors, and CS, and influences QoL, by structural covariance analysis., Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. Participants were recruited from six health care facilities and 101 patients with CLBP were included. Structural covariance analysis assessed the fit of data to the model using goodness of fit index (GFI), adjusted goodness of fit index (AGFI), comparative fit index (CFI), and mean squared approximation error (RMSEA)., Results: The structural covariance analysis showed that the goodness-of-fit indices were high (GFI = 0.993, AGFI = 0.964, CFI = 1.00, RMSEA < 0.01). Sleep quality was not directly influenced by QoL but rather by CS and cognitive factors., Conclusion: This study suggests that sleep quality in patients with CLBP is indirectly mediated through multiple pathways, including cognitive factors and CS, which may influence QoL.

Importance: Tetragenococcus halophilus is a halophilic lactic acid bacterium generally used as a starter culture in fermenting soy and fish sauces. Aggregating strains can be useful in fermenting and obtaining clear soy sauce because cell clumps are trapped by the filter cake when the soy sauce mash is pressed. However, the genetic mechanisms of aggregation in T. halophilus are unknown. In this study, we identified genes encoding aggregation factor and its regulator. These findings may provide a foundation for developing improved T. halophilus starter cultures for soy sauce fermentation, leading to more efficient and consistent clear soy sauce production., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Avian influenza virus (AIV) is a zoonotic virus that can be transmitted from animals to humans. Although human infections are rare, the virus has a high mortality rate when contracted. Appropriate detection methods are thus crucial for combatting this pathogen. There is a growing demand for rapid, selective, and accurate methods of identifying the virus. Numerous biosensors have been designed and commercialized to detect AIV. However, they all have considerable shortcomings. Nanotechnology offers a new way forward. Nanomaterials produce more eco-friendly, rapid, and portable diagnostic systems. They also exhibit high sensitivity and selectivity while achieving a low detection limit (LOD). This paper reviews state-of-the-art nanomaterial-based biosensors for AIV detection, such as those composed of quantum dots, gold, silver, carbon, silica, nanodiamond, and other nanoparticles. Background: Physical performance improvement through whole-body exercise may have a positive impact on dysphagia via improvement of maximum tongue pressure (MTP)., Aims: The present study aimed to quantitatively analyze whether improvement in physical performance reduces dysphagia by improving MTP in patients with acute heart failure (AHF)., Methods: A total of 146 patients with AHF and dysphagia were included. Dysphagia was defined as a functional oral intake scale (FOIS) score < 6. The short physical performance battery (SPPB) indexed physical performance. A two-wave cross-lagged mediation model was used to examine whether an improvement in SPPB results improves the FOIS score via an improvement in MTP. The SPPB, MTP, and FOIS scores (T1: baseline, T2: hospital discharge) were included in the model., Results: A total of 146 patients were included in the final analysis. The SPPB result at T1 positively affected MTP (β = 0.150, P = 0.030) and the FOIS score (β = 0.249, P = 0.002) at T2. MTP at T1 also positively affected the FOIS score at T2 (β = 0.189, P = 0.026). Furthermore, the SPPB result indirectly affected the FOIS score by affecting the MTP (indirect effect = 0.028; 95% CI = 0.010, 0.078)., Discussion: This study contributes to the knowledge base regarding the potential of exercise therapy as a new treatment strategy for dysphagia in patients with AHF., Conclusion: An improvement in SPPB results improved the FOIS score by improving the MTP in patients with AHF., (© 2023. Introduction: SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, has brought a conglomerate of novel chronic disabling conditions described as 'Long COVID/Post-COVID-19 Syndrome'. Recent evidence suggests that the multifaceted nature of this syndrome results in both pulmonary and extrapulmonary sequelae,chronic dyspnoea, persistent fatigue, and cognitive dysfunction being the most common, debilitating symptoms. Several mechanisms engender or exacerbate cognitive impairment, including central nervous system and extra-central nervous system causes, although the exact mechanism remains unclear. Both hospitalized and non-hospitalized patients may suffer varying degrees of cognitive impairment, ranging from fatigue and brain fog to prolonged deficits in memory and attention, detrimental to the quality-of-life years post-recovery. The aim of this review is to understand the underlying mechanisms, associations, and attempts for prevention with early intervention of long-term cognitive impairment post-COVID-19., Methodology: A systematic search was conducted through multiple databases such as Medline, National Library of Medicine, Ovid, Scopus database to retrieve all the articles on the long-term sequalae of cognitive dysfunction after SARS-CoV-2 infection. The inclusion criteria included all articles pertinent to this specific topic and exclusion criteria subtracted studies pertaining to other aetiologies of cognitive dysfunction. This search was carefully screened for duplicates and the relevant information was extracted and analysed., Results/discussion: To date, the exact pathogenesis, and underlying mechanisms behind cognitive dysfunction in COVID-19, remain unclear, hindering the development of adequate management strategies. However, the proposed mechanisms suggested by various studies include direct damage to the blood-brain barrier, systemic inflammation, prolonged hypoxia, and extended intensive care admissions. However, no clear-cut guidelines for management are apparent., Conclusion: This review of the COVID-19 pandemic has elucidated a new global challenge which is affecting individuals' quality of life by inducing long-term impaired cognitive function. The authors have found that comprehensive evaluations and interventions are crucial to address the cognitive sequelae in all COVID-19 patients, especially in patients with pre-existing cognitive impairment.
