HYDROMETALLURGY , *INDUSTRIAL wastes , *SOLID waste , *SOLID waste management , *METAL tailings , *ALUMINOTHERMY - Abstract
The acid and ammoniacal-carbonate hydrometallurgical industrial processes of the Cuban nickeliferous mines produce yearly, thousands tons of solid wastes, which are dumped in big waste dams that pollute the environment and, besides, they occupy big extensions of possible cultivated land areas. These hydrometallurgical tailings present appreciable contents of various minerals, which contain iron, aluminum, chrome, nickel, silicon, among other heavy metal elements. These nickel-ferriferous wastes constitute an attractive raw material source, which can be useful to obtain products of substantial demands and high use value. The aluminothermic process, using wastes (shavings and sawdust) of the aluminum carpentry and this metal's scrap, offers an attractive metallurgical method for the elaboration of the nickeliferous solid waste. Aluminopyrometallurgical process offers commendable economic and energetic saving advantages and, besides, does not produce residual solids; therefore, this method belongs to the cleaner-production range. By means of the aluminothermic process of these nickeliferous tailings, a similar metal to a white iron and a slag of alumina and various spiels type with high grade of abrasion are simultaneously obtained. VANADIUM pentoxide , *FACTORIAL experiment designs , *SOLID waste , *SULFURIC acid , *ENVIRONMENTAL protection , *VANADIUM - Abstract
In the production of sulfuric acid by the contact method, catalysts with more than 4 % vanadium pentoxide are used, which go out of service once they are completely exhausted. In the present work, the recovery, by acid leaching, of the vanadium contained in exhausted catalysts from the Patricio Lumumba Factory was evaluated. A full factorial design of experiments was carried out (23) where the following were analyzed as independent variables: temperature, solid/liquid ratio and sulfuric acid concentration and as dependent variables: vanadium concentration and leaching performance. The processing allowed obtaining a liquid phase composed of the sulfates of the metals leached with sulfuric acid, which have vanadium concentrations between 1,448 mg/l and 3,730 mg/l. The evaluated processing allows, from the liquid phase obtained, recovering the vanadium for its industrial use, where the solid waste generated is not polluting, which is favorable for the protection of the environment.
Mining is one of the basic activities in the development of the modern world, but at the same time, it has degrading effects on the local physical environment, because it generates huge volumes of final wastes. These residues often include contaminants and they are a major cause of pollution of natural resources and the environment. Mine tailings are materials remains of processing and concentrating minerals in industrial plants. However, in many parts of the world, various types of mine wastes from mining activities and mineral processing are simply disposed in the environment because there are no economically viable ways of exploitation for them. Despite this fact, from an economic point of view, the large tailing dams can be useful, given that they may have a different composition and physical characteristics than the ore explored. With the evolution of market and changes in technology, the mine tailings can be alternatively reused as a byproduct. In this sense, this study sought to develop a systemic approach in characterizing lateritic mine tailings, specifically hydrometallurgical mine tailings processing of Ni and Co, aiming to propose and evaluate exploitation methods employing a geo-environmental friendly approach. The results of this work are focused on a comprehensive characterization of mine tailings, allowing to deepen the understanding of their mineralogy and their chemical, physical and geochemical behavior, as well as in the increase of knowledge about the physical characteristics of these materials, thus allowing for the selection of viable exploitation methods. Another important aspect is the development of two alternatives for using mine tailings: one is based on the physical contribution of their use as filler in asphalt mixtures, and the other is based on the chemical and mineralogical contributions of aluminothermic chemical reactions in order to obtain added value products. Even another contribution of this thesis is the conceptualization of a schematic approach in the characterization, assessment and development of alternative use of lateritic origin mine tailings. Finally, it can be highlighted the characterizations made by using solubilization tests and simple and sequential leaching schemes as ways to assess the potential contamination of mine tailings.
